i’ve been scratching my head over the whole watcher situation. I’m not a fan myself but got dragged into it cus of the people I follow, i only watched their puppet history series and the buzzfeed unsolved series from way back- honestly, i couldn’t care less if they locked all their stuff behind a paywall. I’m so neutral on this whole thing, i might as well be swiss.
but i’m not neutral? In fact, the whole thing really bothers me and i couldn’t figure out why.
cus i get it, yanno. As a company that thrives on creativity, i understand you’d wanna cut yourself off the mega-capatalist-giant that is youtube to get rid of annoying restrictions, and asking monetary support from your audience so you can really stretch the limit of your creativity. I GET IT.
And it STILL bothers me!
And then I figured it out:
the whole “any future videos they’ll be making will EXCLUSIVELY be available through a streaming service you have to pay a monthly subscription for” comes less across as “please support us monetarily so we can grow as creators”, and comes more across as “if you want to continue being a fan, or even being a part of the audience, you’re gonna have to pay up. You have no choice in the matter. It’s either pay, or you’re not a ‘real’ fan or a ‘real’ part of our audience.”
THAT’S what’s bothering me about it. It feels like they’re gatekeeping who gets to be part of their community with money (that not everyone might have). And knowing where they come from and how they started…. That’s… extremely tone deaf. To put it gently.
love everyone's theories about what George, Paul or Ringo's films might be like, but we have met men before, yeah? four films about the four beatles is definitely code for a three and a half hour bio-epic about John Lennon's important life, and then some half hearted twenty minute mini features about the other three and how much they loved John
I'm pretty sure there was a studio au headcanon about them trying to arrange a poly wedding and getting an offer to film in a movie about their love story?? Here it comes, starring our coffee boy! <3

The art is lovely and now I'm gonna ramble because that's what I do when I care about something.
For the love of women, please PLEASE can fan artists remember to add muscle to their Shadowhunter ladies? I'll commend Bowater for cleverly giving James that sculpted and lean look without making him a beefcake (nothing against beefcakes, I'd love to hug them), but Cordelia is once again suffering from Arms And Shoulders Too Slender It's Hard To Even Imagine Her Picking Up A Sword. There is some there, yes, but artists shouldn't be afraid of giving particularly Female Main Characters weight and toned muscle. Cordelia is supposed to be nearly the same height as James as far as I can remember, and she's curvy, and full, and she wields a sword like it's second nature to her. Please explain why she looks so tiny in James' lap.
Also I'm pretty sure marriage runes are supposed to go over the heart whenever possible (thinking about Will's parabatai rune being over his heart instead -- he didn't get Tessa to draw over the scar, did he??) and... either I'm looking at the picture wrong or James' rune is not over where his heart should be.
For the matter, where are their other runes and scars?? James' Voyance rune isn't even on his hand. And I'm pretty sure he's right handed. I could have that wrong though.
Another thing: no one can ever decide what Cordelia's hair looks like and it's the funniest thing to me. This is what happens when all you do is vaguely say the colour is like fire but also like rose petals but also a flowing river of those things but also is Red (probably for redhead, but then from there I never understand where the rose petal analogy comes from considering the typical rose is a deep bloody colour -- I do acknowledge the existence of those light orange varieties though which might more closely resemble red hair). In the end, I'm glad readers can infer what they want and imagine the characters how they like.
Anyone else think James looks like he's built like a tennis player? Oddly specific, maybe, but it was a thought I had. Mostly the arms and somewhat narrow body.
James' hair is nice, his eyes are an interesting take on gold in the shadows. Bowater managed to also make him look closely related to his father, so bravo for that.
In the end, the focus is obviously on the marriage runes and not other physical aspects outside of it being clear that this is James and Cordelia. Bowater's style is very beautiful and elegant. Love the way fabric and lighting is done too. I'll add also that it is possible to be a smaller person who is slender but still strong so I mean Cordelia's not necessarily done wrong, I just interpret her appearance differently. Obviously, they're both hot and they're both attractive and I have my qualms with the series, chronicles, and author -- the fandom I am so-so on, though I'm still here, aren't I? And I'm taking the time to ramble about my thoughts on a piece of fanart -- but this is good. Gorgeous, even. Both James and Cordelia are beautiful.
i think one reason why the musical works so well for me is that music is one of the few ways that a changing medium can come close to emulating the effect of nabokovs dazzling prose. music affects (many) people on an emotional level and catchy music and rhymes can pull you along just as fast if you let your guard down. there's a reason "dante, petrach and poe" is maybe the catchiest tune in the show - it's also humbert at his most blatantly abject. if you don't listen to the lyrics you're bopping along before you know it even though this man with his lovely singing is going into great detail about the sex appeal of (quote) "barely pubescent" children.
just like in the novel humbert is pulling out all the stops of the medium to get the audience on his side, utilising the trappings of musical and emotions associated with certain numbers and types of music to package the awful things he's saying - and the lyrics are more explicit than most adaptations ever dared to be regarding the full horror of the story. you could write an analysis like this about probably each of the songs individually (and ideally someone who knows more about music theory than me should do that) but especially with "dante" and "lolita" the love song/lament that either opens or closes the show depending on the version the lyrics are so spine crawling (arguably also tell me, tell me, though the context does more than the lyrics there) while the music invites you immediately to side with the figure performing them.
any adaptation that can't rely fully on nabokov's prose needs to find something equally seductive and that's a hurdle for most other mediums that i think really bizarrely makes the musical stage very well suited to tell "lolita".
A young Christopher Lee guest stars as dastardly Larry Spence - a rising star in the world of journalism, turned blackmailer and then murderer - in The Vise: The Final Column (1.16, ABC, 1955); the episode wasn't seen in the UK until 1963, as part of ITV drama anthology Tension
i feel like the barbie movie was great as a comedy, but it should’ve stayed in that lane more. imo when the movie went outside of barbieland (literally & figuratively) and tried to make itself out to be all activist-y, it was boring and predictable. obviously it’s barbie so it’s a given that there’s gonna be Girl Power messaging, but they should’ve dialed it way back and just had more dance numbers! we all know that barbie didn’t end the patriarchy, and nobody needs basic, ham-fisted talking ‘feminist’ talking points about how Being A Woman Is Hard from a movie made with a giant corporation. the comedy aspect was what really made the movie, and i just wish there had been more of that.
anyway been watching a lot of romances lately because I'm making a silly little indulgent video featuring movies i think have the most impactful romances. and there are of course movies that affect others but not me. and im not sure whether to include really well known ones that other ppl love but which i dont?
like, ppl love carol but i feel nothing about the romance in it. or moulin rouge. considering im making it mainly for me, ill probably omit famous ones if i dont vibe with them
im also trying to expand beyond the us and europe. which is hard, like i can name many famous beloved american movies even if i havent seen them bc i grew up hearing about them. osmisis and all. but like bollywood movies for ex? i have no context for them and have to go by like letterboxd ratings or lists i find. it's kind of like how i feel about a lot of music, like im lacking a foundation to jump off of.
the way mike is like “no pineapple on pizza is wrong don’t listen to him el” and el has no reference for societal constructs of queerness liking fruit on pizza and homophobia ‘pizza with fruit is horrible and weird’ mindsets and so trying it and saying ‘it’s good!’ with wide eyes (i see u lesbian) and argyle nodding supportively like the queer mentor pizza guru he is and then gay plotting with el to get mike to try the “fruity pizza” saying “try before you deny” suggesting that mike hasn’t even tried exploring his sexuality fruity pizza he’s just accepted that it’s bad because that’s what society other pizza eaters have told him and he has avoided his sexuality fruity pizza because of it
