Firstly, amazing job on the analysis here!! It is extremely objective and respectful to Taekook.

Secondly, I have seen the Taekook relationship grow over time from being chaotic and uncontrolled to become more mature and secure with each other. Romantic or not, there is no denying that what they share is beyond special. While BH videos have never done justice to their bond, they still managed to shine. However in the last few months, I observe JK intentionally trying to avoid any interaction with Tae on BH cameras. He walks away at Jhope's party, keeps his distance in the Run BTS episode or even the latest Chuseok Live, he looks at the camera/staff everytime Tae touches. However non BH videos are an entirely different story - again Jhope party with other cams, Busan event or even CFs' behind scenes. He clings to Tae and is his usual self around him. Does this make sense? What do you think?

As we’ve talked about quite a bit on here, and addressed earlier, generally it seems that Jungkook is less demonstratively affectionate in public spaces than Taehyung is, but I think you’ve brought up an interesting nuance to that idea.

It’s certainly true, I think, that Jungkook and Taehyung are generally shown interacting less and being less close in official content than we see them in other content (though I would argue that for the last couple of years, while there are still cuts of course, we’re shown a lot more of their interactions and more indications of closeness and affection between them even in official content).

How much of that is Jungkook avoiding interacting with Tae on BH cameras versus how much is the company intentionally managing how much they show, I don’t really know.

Personally, I didn’t really notice as much of Jungkook avoiding or walking away from Tae at Hobi’s party as some other people did. There only really seemed to be one instance of that, from what I saw, which was when Tae went to sit next to Jungkook (who greeted him with a big smile, as I recall). Jungkook did stand up a moment later, possibly after noticing the camera on them, but he stayed close by.

In the recent Run BTS episodes, too, I’m not sure I can really say that Jungkook kept his distance from Tae when he spent that whole chunk of time right next to Tae, either with Taehyung’s arm around his shoulder, or with his own arm around Tae’s. It’s true that other than that (and watching them each gaze lovingly at each other at different times lol) we didn’t see them interact much, but again, I don’t know that there’s any way for us to know how much of that was one or both of them keeping their distance as opposed to the editors picking and choosing what to show.

All that being said, I do think it’s possible, even likely, that they’re both a bit circumspect with what they do on camera, especially in front of BH cameras, and I agree that in general, at least lately, Jungkook seems like he cares more about that than Tae does.

I think that what we see is probably a mix of both Taehyung and Jungkook trying to manage what they show publicly (with slightly different priorities, perhaps) and the BH editors cleaning things up after the fact.

Regarding JK, I think some people overthink he's interactions slightly.

Whilst I agree there was a time that JK (and Tae too), would stop interacting because of an odd glance behind the cameras in certain situations, I do think this happens less and less, particularly after 2020.

Over the years, JK has (in certain situations) become a little more reserved in relation to his interactions with Tae in front of the camera (although, concerts are definitely the exception to this). I think that's because between the two of them, he is the one most likely to conform to what the company dictates. Tae on the other hand is a little bit of a rebel. So I in a lot of interviews, and interactions (in Bangtan Bombs, Documentaries etc) he comes across as stiff or distant towards him. On the other hand, even though he's more reserved, he'll basically let Tae do he wants, particularly since 2020.

There are a few occasions, he does appear to pull away or back from Tae, and I think people (particularly other shippers), will see this and say "look JK doesn't want Tae's affection because he's pulling away", conveniently forgetting that not a few minutes previously/afterwards that maybe Tae or JK where touching each other in some way.

In some other some moments he's most likely tired, like in last VLive where he was sleepy and the one in Las Vegas with Tae/Hobi and Jimin when he was tired from the gym, but again he doesn't stop Tae from touching him, and in fact (like today) seems to take pleasure in the touching.

In the end though it's all relative, couples will have off days and that could be a factor too. Add that to an already complicated situation they are already in, some people will come to conclusions and judgements, that might not be what is actually happening.

Seokjin and the ‘Bang PD is cooking for me’ saga

Truly Seokjin is just filled with so much chaotic energy, especially today, I’m just sitting with my phone in hand laughing and giggling the entire time. If you only just now came online and didn’t have the time to check Weverse yet, let me give you a quick rundown of events. This post, in part, was inspired by an ask we’ve gotten about this and also in references to yesterdays post/You Quiz episode and solo behavior in connection to Seokjin.

From anon: SEOKJIN APPRECIATION POST! I just love Seokjin so much. Yesterday people were so mad that he said he asked for some of his interview to be cut from the broadcast. It is still baffling to me that people refuse to accept that he has clear boundaries and shares only what he is comfortable with. Isn't that exactly what you would want for someone you claim to love? What are the chances he saw that and said, you know what let me p*** them off more by posting pics of Bang PD cooking for him. I’m dead😂

Because I, too, very much appreciate and love Seokjin, let's look at what he’s been up to today on Weverse because, really, it all started out very normally, just like any other time he’s been online, with a reply and a selca.

Thank you to that ARMY for complementing him and potentially being the reason why we even got that selca, and if not, still thanks. After that he replied to another post making everyone just loose it with laughter and inspiring a lot of very funny bathtub edits. Dear Seokjinnie, I’m pretty sure you already have more than enough zeros on your bank account to fill numerous bathtubs but the visual of that is just very interesting.

Everyone thought this would be it, the end of todays adventures on Weverse, but little did we know the party had just begun. Because not that long after...things went off the rails more and more and honestly, I love it.

Get yourself a CEO and chairman of the agency you’re part of to come to your house and cook for you. Truly, this relationship that the boys have with Bang PD is just something, even more when you notice how Seokjin called him hyung despite the difference in age and work place hierarchy, even if it was just as a way to tease him since it’s rather obvious that Seokjin was having a blast.

That food looks absolutely amazing, wow. I’m impressed Mr. Bang.

Seokjin calling Bang PD cutie, we’ve seen it all. I can’t. But if you thought that’s it, no, no. It’s not over yet. Because we get a duckface/pout attempt from Bang PD? The content no one asked for and yet we’ve received it thanks to a definitely at least tipsy seeming Seokjin.

And yet...that’s still not the end because, as though to put the cheery on top, Seokjin also posted a video while laughing and quite clearly having a great time. And calling Mr. Bang “Shihyuk-ah” as though they are chingu, honestly, I CAN’T.

...and then, as the finale of this saga, Seokjin attempted to give Bang PD allowance money. Because of course he did. I love Seokjin so much, he’s so funny!

I love the fact that Mr. Bang just indulged Seokjin in his shenanigans, that he took those two selcas with him, let him take pictures and that video, that he cooked something delicious looking for him at all. I know many, and I mean many many, try to paint Bang PD as some kind of Disney villain and while I won’t pretend he’s a flawless CEO/chairman, since he’s certainly made mistakes and questionable choices in the past, but his relationship with the members really seems good, especially now.

We know he called them when they got their HOT100 #1 while crying, he gifted them shares of BH which is something very unheard of in the industry (though the boys more than earned it seeing as their hard work and talented essentially funded this empire), and he seems to be on their side, like that time when Yoongi said the A&R team were iffy on something in his song but Bang PD just told them to let Yoongi do his thing because he trusts him.

As always, it’s pretty clear, that the best thing we can do is exactly what the members, and especially Namjoon, have asked us to do: trust them. Trust that they know what they do, what they want, how to stand up for their demands, and that they are backed by their own managers, lawyers, families and their fellow members. They have almost a decade of experience in this industry that’s basically hellbent on swallowing anyone whole who isn’t strong enough to fight for themselves, and yet they are still here. They’ve faced struggles most of us can’t even imagine and come out stronger on the other side, even close to each other. Strong enough that their CEO/chairmen even cooks for them and indulges them in their shenanigans on weverse.

Thanks for elaborating. I've seen the Jimin-almost-kissed-JK video only but it had convinced me that it was clearly fanservice, because the did not cut it, and JK withdrew from Jimin, a very different reaction than he would do with Tae in my opinion.

Anyway. I think BH is playing dirty now. I do not like the path they're walking recently, dumbing down their music and all. But it's just my opinion. I still adore the guys though, I'm just worried they migh not like what they have to do for international market recently.

Sidenote: we must not assume that the guys are as pure as fresh snow. They are nice, polite, adoreable, professional, yes. But behind the scenes they are just ordinary people with ordinary faults and kinks. It's been 10 years together they might have a bite of each other here and there. I've seen my girls doing the same at parties. Duh.

Still think Taekook are the OG.

BH acts like a Kpop company and Kpop was never that deep which is why I'd rather not fixate on this event.

I think vminkook love triangle is too fanfiction-ey. I'm not even debating the biting part. I just don't think Jimin is interested in Jungkook that way and I have tangible reasons to think so. I'm more irritated/entertained by the conversations around the event than the event itself.

Heya Peek, got a music ent question for you. Not sure if you’ve seen this news https://www.koreaboo.com/news/bts-performances-deleted-youtube-big-hit-entertainment/ but my question is more on the business side of why a company doesn’t purchase rights over performances that they may have no control over (cause all the ones listed are owned under private western companies). I understand that some fans are mad, but correct me if i’m wrong, in situations like this, there’s actually a more complex reasoning and costly reason behind why BH doesn’t buy over the rights yea? I mean if we were to swap it around and use say a c-ent company, the entire process ought to be even more complex i reckon.

Disclaimer: The following answer is informed by my experience working in the music industry.

The truth is, I have no idea why fans keep saying that Big Hit did not “buy” the performance rights for those videos to be hosted on The Late Late Show and The Tonight Show’s respective official YouTube channels. That is actually not the way that works. (Artists I have personally worked with have actually featured on those shows.)

When it comes to performance rights, the party that pays for them is not the record label, but instead the party who hosts the performance. So, if the performance occurred on The Late Late Show, then the show would be the party responsible for paying the PRO for their performance fees.

I looked up the songs in question to see if they were registered with ASCAP/BMI/KOMCA, and they absolutely are. I don’t see any issue with the PRO side - at least nothing that appears to be glaringly obvious, anyway.

Here are all of their registrations:

So what that means is that there may be some other unknown PRO issue that may involve one or more rights owners. It could be an issue of an uncleared sample, or a sample that was only cleared for usage within a specific territory for a specific period of time or for a specific event. (Which would mean that whatever it is would need to be renegotiated.)

It could also be an issue that the actual playback track that was used for those performances had a different arrangement with additional rights owners, but that particular arrangement was not properly registered with all the respective PROs, which would then explain why all of those videos were taken down.

So I’m posting this link to share it with I-army, since JM and JK’s unit performance for Prom Party 2018 got taken down on both Vlive and Youtube platform due to “possible copyright issues”.

Now the cause of actual event is unknown and controversial, some people said antis (of BTS or of JM?) reported the video, others say BH announced it was removed due to copyright infringement. Shippers think it’s BH trying to hide JM and JK and shutting them down. I’m leaning more on scenerio 1 and 2 though, 3′s not a possibility since the upload on youku is unaffected, but my opinion will change if that gets unlisted too.

This will be something that will forever be on speculation, but let’s hope this official upload done for C-Army can stay alive and well cause China don’t give a ... **** when it comes to copyrights >.>

Barista Hustle Faces Backlash, Loses Distribution Over Public Scandal

In frankly wild news, over the past week the international specialty coffee industry has been roiled by controversy involving the prominent Australian coffee education, equipment, and consulting brand Barista Hustle. The company’s CEO and founder, Matt Perger, has admitted to repeatedly using a racial slur in front of a Black employee in 2018.

This is story has played out largely in public, across a series of social media posts and against the wider backdrop of an ongoing historic Black civil rights movement transforming public life worldwide

Back in 2017, Michelle Johnson—a journalist, publisher, coffee professional, public speaker, activist, and community organizer originally from Northern Virginia, now based in Los Angeles—was hired by Melbourne, Australia multimedia company Barista Hustle. The company, a hybrid of educational tools, equipment sales, and digital community, was founded by the international coffee competitor and consultant Matt Perger and debuted in January 2015.

Johnson moved to Melbourne to in November of 2017 to work full-time for the company, and was hired to perform a multitude of roles at Barista Hustle. In a contemporaneous interview with the American coffee publication Coffee Compass, Johnson described her role as including “directing marketing and communications,” working as “the head admin of our Facebook group,” as well as contributing to newsletter outlines, product and website copy, subscription content, in-house video and photo work, and workshop organizing.

Then she was gone. By early 2019 Johnson was giving interviews about her next steps in coffee, having publicly announced her departure from Barista Hustle via public social media statements in August 2018. A series of public revelations in early June 2020 have detailed why.

At 3:30 AM PST June 5th, 2020, the following statement was published on Barista Hustle CEO and Founder Matt Perger’s Twitter. Johnson was not informed in advance of Perger’s public statement but had alluded to the issues behind her departure from Barista Hustle in a Tweet from June 2nd. The response online to Perger’s statement was swift and almost uniformly negative, playing out in public Twitter replies, Reddit threads, and across public social media related to the coffee industry. Mere hours after Perger’s public statement, the San Francisco based specialty coffee manufacturing brand Fellow Products announced the termination of its coffee equipment distribution portal with Barista Hustle, and at least one member of Barista Hustle’s team, Miranda Hodge, a volunteer moderator of the BH Facebook group, announced their resignation.

A few hours later, at 9:22 PM PST on June 5th, Michelle Johnson responded publicly via public Twitter account. Johnson’s public statement is below. These images are presented in an image carousel; please click over after each image to read the statement in full.

According to the named individuals in Michelle Johnson’s text message excerpt—D’Onna Stubblefield, Ezra Baker, and Tymika Lawrence—the text messages tweeted by Johnson are unaltered and accurately reflect contemporaneous correspondence around the incidents.

In the course of reporting this story, Sprudge has reached out to all involved parties to seek additional comment. This includes Matt Perger and Michelle Johnson, whose statements are below, as well as Michael Cameron, a former Barista Hustle employee now on the communications team at St. ALi, who is named in Michelle Johnson’s depiction of the incidents. On June 6th Cameron commented on the matter publicly in the form of a tweet, which appears here with consent:

“I can confirm that Michelle’s statement is an accurate depiction of the events as they transpired. There were two incidents of Matt using the n-word. I spoke to him after the first time about how inappropriate it was. After the second incident, Michelle understandably no longer wanted to work at Barista Hustle. She requested to be paid out the remainder of her employment; there was a counteroffer of five weeks, which Michelle accepted upon signing the deed of release. At this point, I also resigned.

I also want to add I witnessed the emotional turmoil this caused Michelle, not only then in the immediate aftermath, but also for the almost two years since this has happened. Michelle is an incredible human being—full of grace, humility, and humour—and I hope some of the burden she’s had to carry over this has been lifted.” — Michael Cameron

“To all coffee people and our broader community, friends, partners, and critics,

I made mistakes in 2018 and I made mistakes last week, and I am truly sorry.

I twice used a racial slur which was offensive to a former employee and stifled their voice with a legal instrument. Last week I then published sensitive details of what happened in a selfish panic.

For all of these acts, I apologise — both to the person concerned, and to everyone in the community who has been hurt as a result of my actions.

I’ve received a lot of criticism in the last few days and have read every word. It has been embarrassing, humbling, and painful. I understand this is part of the process.

I am wary of releasing a rushed list of commitments for myself and Barista Hustle before truly understanding what is required. They will be announced shortly, and we will be held accountable to them.” — Matt Perger

“I had so much hope when I started working at Barista Hustle, and I’m still heartbroken by the entire experience. I moved across the world only to end up feeling like I wasn’t welcome by someone who claimed to respect me and my work in the years prior. (Remember Tamper Tantrum NYC?)

Now that the truth behind my departure has been made public, I’m refocusing my energy into finding the healing I deserve and finding the best ways to make The Chocolate Barista a resource that not only centers justice, but positive work that should be amplified within the Black coffee community.

4/19/2019, 3:30PM: Time to Unwind

As I stepped out of the interview room once again, I felt a small sense of relief. Finally, I had some time to kick back relax! I quickly hurried downstairs to a place that I probably shouldn’t be heading, knowing myself: The Dealer’s Room.

Inside, I scanned the many booths, which were packed with merchandise. DVDs, Blu-Rays, toys, video games, art books! Whatever you were looking for, there was a good chance that you’d find it here.

Well… for the most part.

I quickly learned that there are two reliable ways to make a dealer balk. “Would you happen to have anything from Sakura Wars?” I asked one, and received a look of utter bewilderment. Time and again, this happened as I sought out more merchandise from the twenty-three-year-old series.

Of course, this didn’t bring anywhere near as many odd looks as my inquiries for specifically bad anime.

“Why… would you want that?” one vendor asked in confusion, their head tilting just a bit before I explained the fun of Bad Anime Night. Once they clued in, they seemed eager to show the usual favorites: Garzey’s Wing, Photon, Darkside Blues… all promising, all glorious trash. Still, they weren’t exactly titles that tickled my dark side.

Funny enough, it was Discotek Media’s booth that proved to be the source for a new title that was bad enough to make audiences weep and wail as they ran for the exits. A cruel smirk played across my lips, as the vendor and her partner chatted on which shows would be bad enough to be considered bad for you. The partner piped up a moment later, saying “I hope you don’t mind losing friends over this one,” as he handed over a copy of Karate Master. I couldn’t help but smile brightly as I responded with “If they are still my friends at the end of the night, I’m doing it wrong!”

Afterwards, it was time to find some, well… good stuff. And find it, I did, as I scooped up titles that somehow eluded my collection. K-On!, Squid Girl, Case Closed, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid… I quickly found my bag filled to bursting with a cavalcade of modern classics.

With my itch to spend thoroughly scratched, I figured it was time to visit an old friend. I made my way to the Science Fiction Continuum booth, where Brian T. Price was working. Price is somewhat of an icon for the convention, as he hosts Totally Subversive Toons and Bad Anime, Bad! Every year to great fanfare. When I stopped by, there was a brief lull in the customer flow. I popped over and we began to chat. As we talked, it became increasingly clear that Price was planning something big for the tenth anniversary of Bad Anime, Bad! I wasn’t sure what at that point, but I was expecting a truly magnificent train wreck, which would make the crowd giggle and recoil at the same time.

Our meeting didn’t last too long, though, as the booth began to grow busy again. We said our farewells, and returned to our normal routines.

Well, as normal as Anime Boston gets, anyway.

4/19/2019, 4:45PM: Dinner and a Demo

By quarter of five, I had gotten my shop on, and decided to hurry out of the hall before I decided to buy something I’d regret, like that Sakura Shinguji cel priced at $200. With MIYAVI’s concert just over an hour away, it felt like the best course of action would be to grab a bite to eat. With dinner on my mind, I made a hasty trek to Eataly’s La Pizza & La Pasta.

“Party of one,” I said to the hostess, who directed me to the bar. As I took my seat, the barkeeper prepared a glass of water, as well as a serving of bread and olive oil. It was a lovely beginning to the meal, with the pillowy bread acting as a delectable sponge for the fragrant oil. It’s a simple treat that I’ll never not crave from time to time.

As the bartender circled back, I placed an order for a simple Margherita pizza. I pulled out my phone and began to go over the day’s biggest news developments. I breathed a small sigh of relief, noticing that the news coming from both Anime Boston and Sakura Con was fairly light this time around.

Within a few minutes, the server came around with my pizza. It’s a simple dish: San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, served on a wood-fired crust. Still, as the saying goes, simple is often best.

The sweetness of the tomatoes played beautifully with the slightly bitter char on the crust, which helped to accent the creaminess of the cheese. The basil offered a nice fragrant note that helped to really elevate the entire dish to perfection. I smiled a little as I savored each bite, just losing myself in the moment of a delightful, relaxing meal during a busy weekend.

I checked my phone as I stepped out of Eataly, noticing that I had a message from a colleague who was hanging out in the Panelists’ room. I swiped over to my clock: 5:25 PM. Plenty of time.

I quickly trekked back into the Hynes, toward the room. I paused for a moment when I arrived, remarking at how quiet everything was inside. It took a moment, but I clued in to two gentlemen were seated and chatting: BH Pierce and YouTuber Professor Otaku.

We exchanged greetings, and got to talking shop. First, we discussed our plans for the weekend, though the conversation quickly moved toward Big Eyes, Small Brains. We discussed the fundamentals behind the game’s systems and the world, as they peeked at a preview copy of the book. Sadly, time was running short for all of us, as Professor Otaku had a panel coming up, Pierce had to prep for his own panel that evening, and I had to make my way toward the auditorium for MIYAVI’s concert.

We said a quick farewell, as we parted ways. Though our meeting was brief, it was great to meet a few more folks in this lively community.

4/19/2019, 8:30PM, An Annual Tradition

As MIYAVI left the stage, the room was left eagerly chattering, their ears still ringing from the aural experience that just occurred. For me, though, the night was still young. I wanted to check out one final panel for the evening. Seth, meanwhile, was heading for a screening of Lupin The Third: The Mystery of Mamo.

We parted ways once more, each to take on our tasks for the evening. Before anything, though, I had to see to a little tradition of mine.

Every year, since Anime Boston has been in the Hynes, I’ve made it a point to close off my first night with a particular treat from Au Bon Pain. I can’t let a year pass without enjoying one of their chocolate croissants.

I scurried out of the convention center, my bad growing heavy around my shoulder, as I stole my way to the familiar yellow storefront that waited just outside. I hurried to the pasty case, where I found the treat was seeking. I plucked one from its resting place, and hurried to the counter, where I ordered an iced coffee, paid the clerk, and found a place to sit.

Now, the year was complete for me. Au bon Pain’s chocolate croissants are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. These sweet treats are flaky, tender, filled with chocolate, and coated in powdered sugar. With each bite, I could feel the weariness of the day starting to leave me. Sweet chocolate mixed with the bitter coffee, to produce a flavor that is nothing short of heavenly, in my books.

Alas, like most pleasures, it was fleeting. A few minutes later, I found myself finishing the last bite, my eyes again set toward the towering structure that awaited just outside.

4/19/2019, 10:00PM, The End of the Evening

I couldn’t help but take a moment to watch in awe, as the packed room calmly filed out into the hallways. Deep down, I had to know that folks would be active even now, but it never ceased to amaze me at just how many there were every year. I let out a small smile and hoisted up my bag. It was time to get some work in for the evening. I slunk back to the Sheraton, and made my way to the elevator, then to my cozy, fourteenth-floor room. The weariness of the day finally hit me, as I collapsed into dead weight on my bed. I lazily went through the daily news reports, which had been arriving from friends and colleagues alike through the day, and got to work. It wouldn’t be long after that, though, that sleep would claim me.

As the clock struck one, consciousness eluded me. It was time to get some rest, for tomorrow would bring about a few moments that I’d never forget.
