Lockheed Constellation: goes by Connie, she will give you the classiest evening of your life.

Ekranoplan: she was going to be an Olympic swimmer for the Soviet Union, but when the USSR collapsed, so did she. she's a sad story, but she's happy in her retirement to see the younger generations taking an interest in her career, and trying to carry it on in some way.

They’re quiet together, Max nuzzling into Daniel’s chest and breathing him in, Daniel holding Max close and waiting for the way Max’s temperature is about to rise again, signalling his need for another knot. Maybe when he knows Max is truly through his heat, fully back in his own mind and body. Maybe then Daniel will ask him.

What on Earth is this motherfucker talking about

Joe Biden has literally nothing to do with the F-35. The Joint Strike Fighter program (which produced the F-35) was started under Bill Clinton, the design finalist (the X-35) was selected under George W. Bush, orders for the aircraft were placed under the Obama Administration, and the F-35A and C actually entered production during-- you guessed it, the Trump Administration. (F-35B started at the tail of the Obama Admin) The only thing Joe's done is not cancel the order- something Trump could have done when he was president!

The F-35 in question did not fall out of the sky. In fact the problems was that it did the opposite-- kept flying on autopilot after the pilot ejected. If it dropped like a rock, it would have been much easier to find.

"Two Engines for reliability" -- ha! Here's a list of manned, single-engine aircraft in active use by the U.S. military: the MH/AH-6M Little Bird (attack helicopter), the F-16 Fighting Falcon (Fighter Jet), the T-6 Texan II (Turboprop Trainer), the T-45 Goshawk (Jet Trainer), the TH-57B Sea Ranger (Helicopter Trainer), the T-41D Mescalero (aka the Cessna 172), the T-51A Cessna (aka the Cessna 152), the T-53A Kadet II (aka the Cirrus SR20), the TH-1H Iroquois (Trainer Helicopter, aka the "Huey"), the U-2S Dragon Lady (High-Altitude Reconnaissance), the U-28A Draco (aka the Pilatus PC-12), the UH-1N Twin Huey (Utility Helicopter), and the AV-8B Harrier II (VTOL/"Jump Jet" Fighter); that's 13 aircraft, not including the F-35! You'll note the Harrier sounds a lot like our friend the Lightning-- that is because the F-35(B) is the AV-8B's replacement. I have no idea why he thinks two engines is always better. The F-16, arguably the most cost-effective modern fighter ever built, is a single engine plane. Literally nobody is going to argue we should retire the F-16 because it doesn't have redundant engines. That's absurd.

The "Praying Mantis". I have literally never heard anyone call the B757 the "Praying Mantis". Perhaps he's simply lost his mind.

The most popular airliner among commercial pilots? The data is a little sparse, but the most commonly recurring aircraft I've seen are the 777, the 747, the A380, the 737. The 757 comes up occasionally, but it's not exactly a domineering position. Most pilots' favorite aircraft is the one they fly. The most produced airliner? The 737 with ~11,000, then the A320 ~10,000, and then the 727 with ~1,800.

Literally nobody should have listened to you regarding the 737 MAX. In fact, it's worth pointing out it was your FAA that allowed the 737 MAX to certified as a 737, that the MCAS and Fly-By-Wire were not substantially different from previously certified 737s, and that Boeing was capable of and trustworthy in conducting their self-evaluation. Your administration chose to leave the "red tape" and regulation at the door, and it killed 346 people. (Obviously Trump did not make decisions in the FAA, but he's as guilty as he reasonably could be)

A short text inspired by the conversation following this post on discord. We talked about how Roy is person A and Riza person B, and how Roy closes his heart to avoid being hurt when he loses people he loves and when he knows he might die sooner than later after he's tried for his crimes. My take was that Riza is the one convincing him their relationship is worth being lived, even if their end can be tragic.

"Riza would be the one telling Roy that their relationship is worth being lived. Maybe they'll die, maybe it'll end tragically, but at least they'll have known and loved each other fully, until the end, and isn't that something beautiful? They already have too many regrets in their life, let this not be one more"

Secret Origins 20 babs notes

Overall I really liked it and feel like it was a very strong backstory for babs as batgirl and inadvertently set up some stuff we see in BoP later (I say inadvertently b/c this was written in 1986, way before BoP)

Barbara’s bio mom died when she (babs) was very young.

[image: first are three comic panels from secret origins 20. we see a flashback of a toddler's hand reaching to touch her mom's fac and her mom smiling at her and saying "My beuatiful little babbsie baby..." Barbara thinks (about the flashback) "There's mom's face -- I've never met anyone with brighter blue eyes. Myfather's eyes were never as bright, but then, he loved my mother so much, when she died, he started to." next scene (also a flashback) shows barbara's dad hunched over, resting his head on his hand, talking on the phone. He says "Oh dear god, not thelma. not my thelma. not dead." Barbara's narration box reads "That was the first time i'd seen my father cry. I remember being surprised that men could." and her dad picks up toddler-barbara and says "Mommy's gone, barbie doll.she's gone. what am I gonna do with you now?" end image]

her dad became alcoholic after this

she dreamed of being a superhero

after getting a note from batman (he sees her spying on him and her dad and is like “don’t get caught” she makes a training schedule and montage

we can see babs outside the library. we see a panel of her in the library, going over a book with maps as people stare at her. Barbara's internal monologue reads "I studied maps and blueprints until I had no way to get lost in gotham. miles of maps found their way into my head. forever. I pushed myself to get good grades so I could skip some years." We see barbara studying in her room at her desk. Jim asks "are you going to sleep sometime?" Barbara says "Nope. Are you?" last panel shows barbara running in high school with some guys next to her in a race. her internal monologue reads "And I kept running. I got teased for beating the boys, which hurt, but I was doing it for a reason. I had to be the best." end image]

next series of panels. first we see barbara as batgirl, backhanding someone. her internal monologue reads "My life came alive. night after night, batgirl prowled the streets of gotham. when I decided the library was too limiting, and dad had to drop out of consideration for a congressional seat, I put an obscure old law to good use." barbara (as a civilian) is holding a sign that says "Gordon for congress" and talking to her dad. she says "Dad, I want to take your place!" Jim says "Aren't you too young to be a congresswoman, babs?" Barbara says "Not under the provisions of the knight dependents ibll, passsed into law in 1946. My accelerate schooling and college degree allow me to register as a candidate." Jim says "Hmmmm.. let me see that." THen we see barbara in her office, talking to someone. her internal monologue reads "Being congresswoman gordon allowed me to try to put my opinions into practice." Barbara says out loud "Rae, send these back with a note saying my vote can't be bought by polluters!" end ID]

we do see some second chance stuff this early. It was nice to see this because that is a very important theme later on especially in birds of prey.

Part #2: About Boeing

Boeing was founded in 1916 as Aero Products Company in Seattle, Washington. In 1917 it was renamed Boeing Airplane Company. Boeing built a reputation over the years for being a leader in safety and building quality aircraft. As their reputation grew, so did their market share. Boeing’s planes became a favorite of pilots to fly — they handled well, and they were designed in a way that they were easy to fly. Boeing’s mission statement as I could discern is “Lead on safety, quality, integrity and sustainability” and their vision is “Start with engineering excellence”.

Boeing had a proud culture of being engineer-driven. The engineers who were designing and building the planes had a lot of sway in the company. The direction the company took, the types of aircraft developed, everything was focused around engineers and engineering. They created commercial jets, military jets, military helicopters, and spacecraft. Boeing was the driving force behind the United States becoming a leader in the sky and in space.

Boeing is contracted to design and build seaplanes for the US Navy for WWI, the Model C. They order 50 of them for the war effort. Boeing is also contracted to build the MB-1 bomber. Over the next few years, Boeing receives contracts to build various military planes, while continuing to build their civilian seaplanes. Boeing’s planes are either drafted for military use during WWII from their commercial uses, or they are contracted to build military-specific planes — like the B-29 Superfortress bomber. This is the model that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The B-29 Bockscar dropped the bomb on Nagasaki.

In June of 1946, Boeing begins designing the B-52, one of the most notable bombers in their history. Having flown in multiple wars, as well as being one of the primary planes designed to carry nuclear weapons in the event of a global thermonuclear war with the Soviet Union. It is first completed in November of 1951.

Boeing started making commercial passenger jets in 1955 with the release of the 707 twin-jet, first delivered to Pan Am in 1958. The 707 was the first plane that was ordered by the Air Force specifically for use for the President and other high-ranking officials. The 707 was the first jet to be called “Air Force One”.

The Saturn V rocket is the only launch vehicle ever to have brought humans beyond low-earth orbit. This is the rocket that brought Neil Armstrong and all the other Apollo missions to the Moon. The Saturn V holds the record for the heaviest payload launched into space. The Saturn V was designed by Boeing. Even the Lunar Rover was designed by Boeing.

In 1967, the 737 was released. Nearly all airlines in the US were flying Boeing aircraft. Southwest is notable for exclusively flying the 737 — their entire fleet is solely Boeing 737 aircraft. From their inception in 1967, they have (with two exceptions) only ever flown the 737 family of jets. The exception was briefly flying 727 jets for short periods. In 2021, Southwest had a total order of 234 737 Max jets which was the largest single purchaser of the 737 Max.

“The Queen of the Skies” — The Boeing 747. This plane made it possible for normal people to travel by plane, and brought about the “Jet Age”. The 747 was the first jumbo-jet, it had 4 engines, it could make it across the ocean with ease, and it could hold an immense amount of passengers. The 747 was the first twin-aisle aircraft, making ingress and egress much easier than a single-aisle aircraft. The 747 is one of the safest airplanes when adjusted for seat count. A modified version of the 747 serves as Air Force 1 — the president’s plane. The 747 is also notable for carrying the Space Shuttle as the Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

Boeing’s culture underwent a major shift in 1996. It merged with McDonnell Douglas — who was at the time another major manufacturer of aircraft. The more business-first-focused McDonnell Douglas President and CEO became the President and CEO of the newly merged company. One change that was brought about was moving the headquarters from Seattle (which was near the engineers) to Chicago. The goal of this was to create physical distance from those who may object to changes made by the executives. The new mandate was to design and build the planes more cheaply, get higher profit margins, and increase the share price. Everything else came second.

This was around the time that Airbus was gaining market share, and in some cases, selling better than Boeing. In 1990, Boeing had 80% of the passenger commercial jet market, and Airbus had less than 20%. 5 years later, Boeing had 50%, with Airbus taking 30%, and by 2003, Airbus had 52% of the commercial jet market. The loss of the market leadership drove even higher a push to reduce costs, and increase the speed at which planes are developed and built. This loss spurred the development of the 737 Max, and with the newly required speed and focus on profits, the problems that ensued.
