RACHEL RANKS: THE DARK SOULS TRILOGY BOSSES FROM WORST TO BEST
#42: Asylum Demon (Dark Souls)
“This chosen Undead knows not what this pilgrimage has in store.”
Okay, now we’re getting to the bosses I genuinely like. While its status as a tutorial boss has been outdone by later entries (we’ll get to that later), there’s no denying that everyone’s first encounter with this particular big fella is a memorable one indeed. Its moveset is slow and boring, its design is pretty standard “big monster guy,” and the fight itself is pretty meh, but…it’s a special moment nonetheless. It’d be higher on the list if the fight was more engaging, but it’s too special not to give it some love. The real Dark Souls starts here!
📜 First time I was going to sneak attack the Asylum Demon from above, I snuck onto that little platform I'd noted earlier, just above the gate he's guarding, and I carefully peaked down to observe my unsuspecting foe.
Oh great, he's standing right below, lucky!
But wait... is he... looking at me? The courtyard is covered in shadow and mist, so I squint as hard as I can and, yup, those sure look like his bulbous red eyes twinkling, silently observing me. His grotesque face looks almost cute the way he's standing down there with a curious face, almost childlike.
I got him right where I want him, like a helpless hog in a pen, this is my chance! All I need to do is drop down, axe firmly clutched in both hands, and I'll split his nasty little skull right open, he won't even realize what happened... OH GOD, he can JUMP?!? With a sudden thud he somehow lifts off the ground with those VERY un-aerodynamic wings of his, hurtling towards me like a cannonball, completely shattering the balcony, and sending me plummeting into the gloomy mist below, wondering how such a giant clump of meat can possibly jump two stories high...
