REview: Saturn 3 (1980)| It's Not Great (Though It Is Awesome)
You can probably guess from the title of this article that I don’t think Saturn 3 is a great movie though what I find most interesting is that you can see the potential for greatness all over it. As I mention in the video, the original director, John Barry, left the production after only two weeks and while I can’t definitively say what he shot and what he didn’t I choose to believe the more…

“the victim’s brother, father and sister bare “animosity” toward me, so I will not address them” -- Offender
David Anthony Parga, California inmate AV0978, born 1986, incarceration intake in 2014 at age 28, sentenced to 50 years to life, projected discharge date not available
Murder
A member of the Westside La Habra gang that is tied to the Mexican Mafia, Parga was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentencing enhancements for being the triggerman in the fatal shooting of Leland Washington, an African-American Cal State Fullerton student with no gang affiliations who was attending a Halloween 2006 party in La Habra.
Investigators and prosecutors originally surmised Parga killed Washington because he was black and to further the activities of the Westside gang, which like many Latino gangs in neighboring Los Angeles County has ties to the Mexican Mafia. Those gangs have for years targeted African Americans to drive them out of LA neighborhoods.
But Senior Deputy District Attorney Jim Mendelson would tell jurors Washington was part of a group that had been kicked out of the party and later returned to hang out outside, something that Parga considered disrespectful to his gang. After the party host warned his invited guest Washington and his group to leave, Parga walked up to the student athlete and shot him four times with a .22-caliber pistol. A bullet ripping through Washington's aorta, liver and small intestine caused him to bleed to death internally.
Parga's attorney, Ken Morrison of the Orange County Alternate Defender's Office, said authorities got the wrong man, according to a City News Service report that adds Parga fired Morrison and represented himself at today's sentencing in Santa Ana.
Imposing the 50-year term, Judge Steven Bromberg called Parga a “coward,” reports City News Service's courtroom reporter Paul Anderson.
“This was a senseless and a very, very stupid killing of a young man about to graduate college,'' said Bromberg, referring to Washington being a semester away from bachelor degrees in accounting and business administration. “The defendant's conduct was about as cold-blooded as cold-blooded can be, and that's what makes you a coward.”
Parga also got his chance to address the court, saying he felt Leland's brother, father and sister bore “animosity” toward him. Thus, he directed his comments to Bessie Washington, Leland's mother.
“I know there's nothing I can do to bring (the victim) back and I'm deeply sorry about what happened to him. To you, specifically, I want to say I'm sorry about what happened to your son.”

Kitchen Cum-fidential
Tumblr media
Warnings: teasing, vaginal fingering, p in v sex, some light ass-slapping
Rating: E
Pairing: Paul Mendelson x f!Reader
Word count: 3,488
A/N: Happy Thanksgiving to all my American followers. A little bit of Paul smut. This one is for everyone who wanted to see Paul a little less soft...
And apologies for the truly heinous, bad porno-esque pun of a title (not really, I love it). (And cookies to whoever guesses the music video in the screenshots.)
______________________________________
When Paul had insisted on hosting Thanksgiving for both of your families it had caused a warm, cozy feeling to settle in your chest. It was sweet and domestic in a way you never had in a relationship. And it feeds the fond smile on your face as you watch him in the kitchen now, only a few hours away from the first guests arriving. He is humming as he moves between the pots and pans on the stove, tasting, adjusting, stirring. The turkey is in the oven, but there are still vegetables to chop and potatoes to mash.
He’s totally in the zone and the easy way he handles the knife, adjusts the stove, adds spices… well he’s in his element and watching those long fingers flick the burner down is making you feel warm in other ways, too.
Because that’s the real downside of Paul insisting the two of you host… he’s totally absorbed in the task. He’s been so focused on prep for the last few days that he’s totally ignored you. Well, not completely. He’s put you to work, grocery shopping and helping him get the house ready, but he hasn’t… you know… put you to work.
And it’s not that you haven’t tried. You’ve been teasing him for days, hinting, cajoling… everything short of all out begging. You’ve woken him up with soft kisses down his spine, stroking his skin, nipping at the base of his throat, pressing against him at every opportunity, wearing the silk pajamas that drive him crazy—all things that would normally have him hard and dripping for you. But he’s been totally distracted, adjusting his gantt chart of kitchen timings, triple checking he has everything he needs. He’d give you a kiss on the cheek in response and move on.
You feel your cheeks grow hot again now and not from the steam and heat of the stove. He’s not dressed for dinner yet, still in a threadbare undershirt and sweatpants as he chops and stirs and sautés. He moves with grace, the muscles of his back and arms bunching and flexing, long fingers nimble and sure as he works.
And you start to think about other ways those fingers are nimble and sure, other ways he puts those big hands to use, as you watch him catch a drop of gravy from the ladle, tongue darting out to lick it up from his fingers. And now you’re watching his lips, thinking about what he can do with his mouth, and you shift on the stool you’re perched on, squeezing your legs together for friction, thighs slick. You’ve been wet and aching for days and you’re not sure how much longer you can take it.
You tried catching his attention again not too long ago, still wearing the silky pajamas that molded to your breasts in the heat of the kitchen, nipples obvious through the thin fabric. He had hardly looked up when you entered, shrugging off the light touches of your fingers on his waist or arms so he could stay focused on the stovetop. You even slipped one hand under the waistband of his sweat pants and over the curve of his ass, but he only laughed and smirked a bit before twisting out of your grasp. He had turned his face so you could press a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth but then he was leaning over another pot and checking on it. And he hadn’t even looked at you.
So you finally give in with a sigh. “Fine,” you tell him. “Put me to work then, if you won’t work me.”
He does look up at you then, eyebrows raised and a small smile twitching at the corner of his mouth, hand pausing mid-stir on the gravy.
You roll your eyes. “Yes, I’m being serious. Tell me how I can help.”
He purses his lips and narrows his eyes for a second. Then sighing, he jerks his chin at
the pile of potatoes waiting to be chopped and boiled.
“Cube those for me?”
You hop off the stool and start to pull the pieces together, grabbing a knife and cutting board. The next few minutes pass in relative peace, only the bubbling of the pots, the shick of the knife on the cutting board as you chopped the potatoes, and the soft sound of Paul’s humming as he ducks down to peer at the turkey through the oven door.
You start off doing it just as he asked. Consistent cuts, ensuring all the pieces were identical before moving to the next potato. But he’s still there, right next to you, threadbare undershirt turning translucent as his skin grows damp from the heat of the stove. The curve of his pecs is increasingly obvious, the shirt clinging in a way that isn’t helping to cool the pulse of desire in your low belly.
Ok, so the teasing touches and kisses didn’t work. Maybe it was time for a new approach. You wait until he straightens up and you are back in his eye line before you make your next chop, this one at a slight angle. He doesn’t notice. You continue, tracking him from the corner of your eye, slices coming at inconsistent degrees now, pieces no longer uniform.
He glances over and you see his eyebrow twitch, his mouth pressing into a tight line.
You move to the next potato, hacking into it.
He grunts, unable to help himself. “Babe. Cubed?”
You bite the inside of your mouth to prevent the smirk that tugs at your lips. Instead, you turn to him, eyes wide and innocent.
“This isn't what you wanted?”
His face is pinched as he looks at the mess of potato chucks next to the cutting board. “They need to be even or they won’t cook at the same time.”
“Oh,” you turn back to the pieces still on the cutting board. “Like this?” And you mangle the cut even worse.
He chokes. “Seriously?”
You cock your head to the side, all sweetness as you smile up at him offering up the hilt of the knife and shifting close. “Show me then?”
He narrows his eyes, lips pursed, assessing you. You drop your chin and look up at him through your lashes, lower lip jutting out slightly.
He doesn’t buy it. “I’ve seen you cook. You don’t need my help with this.”
You’re fully pouting now. “But maybe I want it?” He frowns as you lean towards him, running one foot along his calf. “Come on, show me your superior technique, Chef.”
He flushes, not responding, but he doesn’t shake you off either.
Knowing his eyes are still on you, you turn back to the cutting board making another large, inconsistent cut.
Out of the corner of your eye you see him clench his jaw, muscle twitching.
Knowing you have him hooked now, you move to the pièce-de-résistance: you scrape the pieces to the side of the board, dragging the sharp edge over the grain of the wood before looking back up at him, daring him to say something.
His eyes turn dark, gaze hot on you as he presses close, crowding you to the counter, voice low. “You’re being a brat. You’ll ruin the knife like that.”
The darkness in his voice shivers down your spine with the promise of something more, something rough. You arch up into him as you watch him through your lashes. “Are you going to do something about it?”
His breath hitches and he shifts so your breasts are brushing back and forth against him, an intentional tease. His hands come to your shoulders, warm and heavy, and he turns you to face the counter, crowding up behind you. You can feel the heat of him through your clothes as he slides one hand down your bare arm to your hand on the knife, while the other covers yours on the potato. When he speaks again, his lips are brushing your neck, and you shiver.
“If I show you this,” he murmurs, “are you going to listen to me? Or are you going to keep acting out?”
You manage to swallow your whimper, the desire that had been thrumming deep below your skin for days now flaring hot as he surrounds you, biceps flexing as he cages you in.
“Show me?” Your voice shakes with anticipation. “I learn better hands-on.”
He chuckles into your neck, breaking the tension briefly, and presses a light kiss behind your ear.
“All about progressive education, huh?” His voice is laced with amusement as he curls your fingers with his over the knife handle, resting the blade on the half-chopped potato. You can feel the tension in his arms around you, your ass pressed firmly into the cradle of his hips, making the twitch of his cock obvious as he starts to harden against you.
You bite back a smile and roll your hips back. His breath catches and his hand that had been on the potato drops to grab your hip in a hard grip, holding you still.
“You’re not paying attention.” His voice is low and strained.
He can’t see your smirk as you answer, rolling your hips again, completely unrepentant. “Sorry, Chef. I don’t mean to. I’m just so distracted from watching you.”
He hums. “Distraction is dangerous with such a sharp knife.” There’s a slight tremor in his fingers as he pulls the blade from your joint grasp and sets it to the side of the cutting board before lacing your fingers together and pressing your hand into the counter.
You curl your hand in his and press back more firmly with your hips. He’s fully hard against you now, the thin material of his sweatpants hiding nothing. “Oh?” Your voice is breathy, excitement thrumming through your veins as he groans softly, hips rocking into you. “Planning on distracting me more? And here I thought you were teaching me.”
He growls lightly and nips at the curve of your neck, making you gasp. He releases your hip to trail his fingers up and down your side before dipping lower, teasing over your ass before roughly grabbing a handful, kneading. Then he’s drawing his hand back to lay a smack over the curve, making you jerk and groan.
His voice is dark, whispering low in your ear. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing, what you’ve been doing. It’s very bad of you, trying to rile me up like this. This is my domain and that means you follow my orders here.”
You choke as need flashes hot through you at his commanding tone, heating your cheeks. Your neglected pussy pulses along with your heartbeat, so wet now that you can feel your lips slipping against each other as you shift your weight, thighs slick and sticky. Your voice is breathless and wrecked when you answer. “Yes, Chef.”
He moans lightly as you drop your head to the side, baring your neck. He scrapes his teeth along the curve and dips his fingers under your shorts and between your legs. You let out a sharp gasp and he drops his head to groan into your neck. “Fuck. You’re soaking. All this from today?”
You bite your lip and shake your head. He’s running his fingers along your slit as he tests just how wet you really are, spreading your slick, teasing your lips, getting closer to your clit on each pass but never quite giving you what you want. Your breath is coming in harsh pants, whining a bit and you spread your legs further, rolling your hips against him and groaning when you feel his cock twitch.
“It’s been days,” you moan and he’s groaning at the confession, rolling his hips down against you, dragging the hot line of his cock between your cheeks. He slides a finger inside you, pumping it in and out. The noises as he fucks you with his finger are filthy, loud enough to be heard over the pots on the stove, and you clench down around his hand, dragging a groan from deep within his chest at your blatant desperation.
The sound breaks you, and you grind down on his finger, the stretch not enough, but more than you had for days. He curls the digit inside you, rubbing against that spot that makes lightning dance down your nerves.
“Paul, please.” Your words are slurring and you’re rutting against him shamelessly. “Fuck me, please, I need it. I can’t wait anymore, can’t go any longer without it.”
His hand on yours tightens painfully as he groans. “Fuck. Fuck.” And then his hands are at your waist band and shoving your shorts down followed by his own and you gasp as he presses his bare cock between your legs, rubbing the length along your slit until he’s as slick as you are.
His breathing is hard, uneven, and it catches with each pass of his cock between your legs. “Fuck, fine, you win.”
“Fuck. Yes, yes, ok.” You’re nodding, kicking off your shorts.
He’s got his hands on your waist, then one on your upper back roughly pushing you down on the counter while the other tilts your hips back and he’s right there, head of his cock breaching you, the burn of the stretch making your toes curl, it’s so good. He leans over you, mouth hot on your skin, forehead pressed between your shoulder blades as he works you open with short thrusts until he’s fully seated, hips pressed against your ass, breath coming in harsh pants against your neck.
“Fuck,” he breathes out. “You’re so wet, fuck baby, you feel so good.” He’s groaning, hips grinding against yours. You whine, trying to rock back against him, anything to get the friction you’ve been craving. He chokes and nips at your shoulder, holding you firm with shaking hands.
“Fuck, hold on. You have to hold on.” He’s moaning, dragging soft, wet kisses across where he’s been nipping at you, soothing the skin. You clench down on him and he gasps, hips jerking of their own volition.
“Fuck, sweetheart, I will, I will. I just—fuck, if you want me to last you have to give me a second. You’re so fucking tight, goddamn it. Fuck, you’ve already got me on the edge.” He’s mouthing at your skin, hands gripping you tight enough to bruise as he struggles to pull himself back from the bright, hot edge of orgasm.
But you’re right there, too, so worked up from days of watching him in the kitchen. His hands, his fingers, the way his arms would flex when he was chopping vegetables. His tongue laving across a spoon as he tasted things to ensure things were properly spiced. He’s gotten you so worked up without even noticing that just the stretch of his thick cock in you has you on the edge. You arch your back and turn your head desperately seeking out his lips. He tilts his chin and you’re licking into his mouth, biting at his lips and moaning.
“Don’t care. I’m so close, so close, just need you to fuck me. Want you to let go and give it to me as hard as you can.”
He groans into your mouth and then he tightens his grip on your hip and the other holds your wrist to the counter and he does what you ask. He’s fucking into you fast and hard, groaning, pulling your hips back against him on each thrust, thick cock splitting you open and filling you completely. He’s holding you so you’re at the perfect angle for the fat head to drag over that spot that makes you absolutely wild for him on each stroke. And he’s running his mouth the whole time, an endless stream of breathless, filthy praise.
“Fuck you’re so good, taking me like this. You always get so wet for me. You feel so good. God, I’m so close. Are you close? Please tell me you’re close.” His voice breaks at the end, desperate and begging, even as he is the one fucking you hard into oblivion.
You’re nodding, frantic, desperate, unable to speak, overwhelmed by the waves of pleasure pulsing through you with each thrust of his cock. You’re so wet it’s practically dripping down your legs with each pass, and the sharp slap of skin on skin is obvious and obscene, making your toes curl. He’s groaning as your cunt starts to flutter around him, your orgasm building rapidly. You’re thrusting back against him, combined force hitting you just right and you’re tensing, almost there.
He moans at the feeling, voice shocked and amazed. “Fuck, you going to come like this? Come from just my cock?”
And you’re groaning and nodding and he doesn’t let up as it builds rapidly, white-hot and burning, until you’re crying out, body seizing as you’re consumed.
His hips stutter as you clamp down hard around his cock. He’s shaking, fucking you through it for as long as he can before he lets out a desperate gasp, biting down on your shoulder hard as his cock pulses, cumming deep inside you, orgasm dragged from him by the force of your own.
You’re both still breathing hard, shaking from the force of it, slumped over the counter when a timer dings somewhere. He takes an unsteady step back, his cock slipping from you, making you whine at the loss. He runs a soothing palm up and down your side as he reaches over to turn it off and turn down the corresponding burner.
You reach out with a weak hand to tangle in his shirt and tug him back against you and he lets you, pressing soft kisses to the marks he left across your shoulders.
“I think you might need to wear a turtleneck tonight.” His voice is rough and amused. And not at all apologetic.
You chuckle lightly in response and crane your neck for a kiss, which he leans up to grant you.
“Who knew you were such an animal when you’re worked up,” you murmur against his lips and he laughs, pulling back.
“Right, and you had no idea what you were doing, teasing me this whole time. Totally the innocent party.”
You nod, turning to face him with a cheeky grin, shivering at the feel of his cum mixed with your slick dripping down your thighs. You bat your eyelashes at him, running your hands up his chest to tangle your fingers in his hair and pull him down into a kiss, languid and hot.
“I’m always the innocent one,” you whisper into his mouth, rubbing at his nipples through his shirt.
He moans, swaying into you for a second before pulling back and putting space between you. “No. No more. I’ve already steamed the broccoli too long.” You deepen your pout and he gives you a mock glare. “Stop. Go shower and let me finish here.” He pauses, eyes dropping down to your lips, swollen and wet from your frantic, biting kisses, and his tongue darts out to wet his own.
You smirk and slide down his body to grab the waist of his sweatpants from around his ankles. When you look up at him, your mouth is inches from his softening cock, your breath ghosting across him, still half-hard and slick, and he shivers.
He tilts his head back, letting his eyes slip shut and breathing out hard through his nose. “Fine.” he relents. “Let me cook now and I'll let you pull me into a dark corner later and get you off.”
You smirk, victorious. “Yes, Chef,” you murmur, and you smack his ass, making him jerk and laugh as you straighten, pulling his pants back up.
Despite his insistence that you leave, his hands come to your hips, thumbs rubbing circles into your skin, loathe to let you go.
You lean into his touch, arching up, lips brushing his ear. “But you better not get distracted later. Maybe I should just get dressed like this, your cum dripping out of me all night, just to make sure you stick to that promise. I wouldn’t want to be forgotten...”
He groans, eyes sliding shut as he buries his face in your neck and nips at your skin, making you arch against him and moan softly.
“Please don’t. You’ll give me a persistent hard-on in front of both of our parents and I think I'd die if they noticed.”
You laugh and press a soft kiss to his temple, untangling yourself from him, finally relenting. “Fine. But don’t think I won’t hold you to that dark corner later.”
He rolls his eyes and gently shoves you towards the stairs. “Go. Before you distract me further and something burns.”
You turn on your heel and give him a little mock salute along with a smirk. “Yes, Chef!”

The Only Guide to Al Capone - Movies, Quotes & Son - Biography
Ultimately the viewer might ask what the point is. The motion picture never quite responds to that concern. Not that it's obligated tobut in lieu of an agenda so basic, we need to a minimum of feel as if we're getting some insight into psychology or criminality or something. Nor does "Capone" provide a main character darkly engaging adequate to offset what an ugly, self-involved, spaced-out zero he is.
Nor does the movie permit the other characters, or us, to truly get in touch with Capone mentally, so hermetically sealed-off is Hardy's acting and the film's specific attention to it. We don't get a sense of what the others originally saw in him as a buddy, a spouse, a sibling, an employer, a thrilling and moneymaking gangster icon, and so on, to motivate such loyalty at the end of his violent and eventually unpleasant presence.
The smart Trick of Watch Capone - Prime Video - Amazon.com That Nobody is Discussing
Was late-in-life Capone the best automobile through which to check out whatever it was the movie hoped to check out? Your mileage will vary. For my part, I have actually seen a great deal of "final days of a tough man" films, and this one falls someplace in the middle of the quality continuum, with the bold, contemplative "Pasolini" and "The Irishman" on one end, and the "let's throw some pancake makeup on these stars" fiascos "Mr.

While Hardy's user-friendly snarling and rumbling and middle-distance looking feel electrically unpredictable, the movie's structures and movements are thoroughly composed and mapped out and lit, and juxtaposed with other shots so exactly that a person envisions that "Capone" was storyboarded within an inch of its lifeas old films remained in earlier periods, prior to directors chose that the default was shooting every moment with a great deal of electronic cameras simultaneously and finding out how to "cover" the scene later on, during editing. al capone full movie.

It's difficult not to appreciate the old-school craft involved here, along with the impulse to construct a feature-length film around a historical personage in an intimate and reasonable situation. Whether you discover the result enchanting or laborious will depend totally on aspects that can't be measured by a star ranking, although the one at the top of this review estimates my own.

Introducing | NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program Recipients and Finalists
Tumblr media
NYFA has awarded a total of $644,000 to 95 New York State artists.
The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced the recipients and finalists of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship program, which it has administered for the past 31 years with leadership support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The organization has awarded a total of $644,000 to 95 artists (including three collaborations) whose ages range from 25-84 years throughout New York State in the following disciplines: Crafts/Sculpture, Digital/Electronic Arts, Nonfiction Literature, Poetry, and Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts. Fifteen finalists, who do not receive a cash award, but benefit from a range of other NYFA services, were also announced. A complete list of the Fellows and Finalists follows.
The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program makes unrestricted cash grants of $7,000 to artists working in 15 disciplines, awarding five per year on a triennial basis. The program is highly competitive and this year’s recipients and finalists were selected by discipline-specific peer panels from an applicant pool of 2,744. Since it was launched in 1985, the program has awarded over $31 million to more than 4,400 artists.
“Being an artist is hard work, and a struggle for many; a recent report by New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs found that 40% of the artists surveyed cannot afford art supplies and tools,” said Michael L. Royce, Executive Director, NYFA. “This sobering figure is one of the reasons why we are proud to support artists across New York State with unrestricted grants. For 31 years, artists of all disciplines have put the money towards anything that helps make their lives and practice easier, including buying the supplies and time they need to make their art and push their careers forward” he added.
New York State Council on the Arts Chair, Dr. Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, said: “The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship program supports New York State’s creative communities, and NYSCA is proud of our leadership role in this nearly 32-year collaboration with NYFA. Since 1985, NYSCA has provided $31 million in funding for this critical program. Each individual grant helps the recipient more freely engage in imaginative work, and expand the boundaries of creative media. It is gratifying to know that this program has made a real difference in the daily lives of thousands of artists, throughout New York State."
Richard Barlow of Oneonta, New York, was awarded a Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts. He expressed that “the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship is an incredible validation of my work as a visual artist. As a relative newcomer to New York State, it also feels like an acknowledgement that I have established a successful art practice and presence in my new home.” He added that the money will “offset many of the costs of maintaining an active artistic practice: travel, shipping, residencies, materials, promotion, fabrication, etc., and in doing so will alleviate financial pressures and open some mental breathing room to allow for more creative work.”
Neda Toloui-Semnani, a Fellow in Nonfiction Literature from Brooklyn, New York, shared the following about her fellowship: “The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship has given me, a nonfiction writer, the luxury of resource. It has given me both peace of mind and a great deal of joy because I get to see through the final reporting and writing of my first book without compromising. It’s an extraordinary gift.”

Open letter to Theresa May
Dear Prime Minister,
The government's decision to close the "Dubs" lifeline for vulnerable refugee children is truly shameful. The idea that as a country we will slam the door shut after just 350 children have reached safety is completely unacceptable. Lord Dubs was himself a child saved by Sir Nicholas Winton who rescued 669 children virtually single-handed. It is embarrassing that the Prime Minister's entire government will not even manage to match the example set by her former constituent all those years ago, let alone the efforts of the Kindertransport movement of which he was a part which saved 10,000 children from the Nazis. It is clear from the work of charities like Citizens UK's Safe Passage project and Help Refugees with unaccompanied child refugees across Greece, Italy and France that where these safe and legal routes are blocked, children are left with a terrible choice between train tracks on the one hand and people traffickers on the other. The government's threadbare consultation with councils is now nine months out of date. The country we know and love is bigger than this. All We Hear is Critical Ga-Ga
Dear Critics:
You were wrong about Bohemian Rhapsody. Why do you hate it so?
Yeah, yeah, yeah - formula. Adjusted timelines. Dramatic focus somewhere other than what you wanted. Too mass market
Maybe listen to this guy.
"a film is a painting, not a photograph"  -- screenwriter Anthony McCarten
Beyond all the artistic license with the timeline, why all that hate?
To Kevin Fallon at the Daily Beast, it’s not only not gay enough, the movie is an attack on gays and on Freddie by the band because of his sexuality. People bitched about casting Rami because that was de-queering the movie because of his particular sexuality. We heard hints of this rhetoric before. I remember when the first trailer came out. People were bitching because they didn’t show him gay, but they did show Mary.
Now that the movie is a shrieking success, the criticism continue. Hazel Cills of Jezebel is frustrated. “The success of Bohemian Rhapsody is frustrating, given that, according to many critics, it’s not just a bad movie but an arguably homophobic one…“ Well, Hazel the audiences love it. How do you respond? Audiences are ignorant.”So how did this happen? Well, audiences are disinterested in the truth, for one.”
She’s not alone. According to Scott Mendelson in Forbes, “paying consumers just wanted to rock out to their favorite Queen songs.“
I hate to think that there is some sort of collusion amongst commercial reviewers, at least when it comes to some icon like Freddie Mercury. It would sadden me deeply to learn that there is a “right” way to portray characters with complicated sexuality.
Maybe they are just mad because they had hope for a story someone else was making about a larger than life person, but it wasn’t the masterstroke they saw in their mind’s eye.
Sorry. Make your own movie then. I read one review that wanted an art house film that dove deep into the offstage experience, and carried an R-rating to tell the sex bits it in granular detail, which the PG-13 mass market version couldn’t. Well here’s the thing: Queen’s music evolved from the hipster art prog-metal of Death on Two Legs and The Prophet’s Song to Radio Ga-ga as a concert experience. To most of the world, your vision is the sort of thing a fanboy would blog about. No one’s interested, but you go ahead and make your art. Let’s then see what the critics think of it.
For me, I wish there was more 1970s Queen, when I thought I was part of a secret fraternity of music geeks that had stumbled onto the Holy Grail of cool smart pre-superstar musical gold. I would have also liked a couple sentences of the post-Live Aid resurgence: the tour. The Highlander soundtrack. Otherwise, I am just fine with the show. And resurgently sad that it fell silent way too soon.
[And if only they could have fit this one in there somewhere too:]

all of my 2018 book recommendations
All year long, I’ve made a weekly book recommendation when kicking off the weekend open thread. These aren’t work-related books; they’re just books I love and think everyone else should read. Sometimes they’re books that I’m in the middle of reading, and other times they’re just long-standing favorites.
Here’s the complete list of what I’ve recommended this year (maybe in time for holiday gift-shopping!). I’ve bolded my favorites of the favorites.
This Is How It Always Is, by Laurie Frankel. It’s about a family who thought they had five sons but turns out to have four sons and a daughter. It’s excellent.
Fraud, by David Rakoff. Smart and hilariously funny essays on places where he never seems to quite belong.
The Immortalists, by Chloe Benjamin. I’m on an epic family saga kick, ever since Pachinko. This one starts when four siblings in 1969 New York visit a fortune teller who tells them each what day they’ll die, information that hangs over all of them as their lives unfold.
Tepper Isn’t Going Out, by Calvin Trillin. You wouldn’t think a novel about parking would hold your interest, but it’s Calvin Trillin and so you would be wrong.
The Power, by Naomi Alderman. This is SO GOOD. This is what happens when teenage girls everywhere suddenly discover that their bodies can produce lethal electric shocks — instantly shifting the balance of power in the world.
Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Writers, and Guests, by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales. This is an exhaustive oral history of the show from the start, from its fights with censors to the fights among its stars to how the writing gets done. You’ll learn things like how different celebrity hosts treated people, and why everyone hated Chevy Chase.
Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness, by Melissa Dahl, which delves into when and why we feel awkward, and how we can move past it. You’ll learn about why it’s awkward to mix two groups of friends, where secondhand embarrassment comes from, and how to fight off a cringe attack — and there’s a whole chapter on awkwardness at work! I talked more about it here, and awesome.
Asymmetry, by Lisa Halliday. It’s hard to talk about this without spoiling it, but it’s two seemingly disparate stories that may surprise you in how they’re connected. It’s beautifully done and I loved it.
Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng. Why did it take me so long? I don’t know but it’s wonderful. It’s about family and class and art and convention and loss. Read it!
Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House, by Cheryl Mendelson. This is everything you need to know about having an adult home, from how to fold a fitted sheet so that it doesn’t look like gnomes live inside it, to how to wash dishes so they’re actually clean, to where you should and shouldn’t compromise on cleanliness. This is all the stuff that possibly used to get passed down generationally but no longer does, and so many of us don’t know it, but now we will.
The Newlyweds, by Nell Freudenberger. A Bangladeshi woman comes to the U.S. to marry an American man, and ends up caught between two cultures.
The Amateur Marriage, by Anne Tyler. A multi-generational saga, all stemming from a marriage that probably shouldn’t have happened.
The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror, by Daniel Mallory Ortberg.Delightfully disturbing (and sometimes funny) adaptations of classic fairy tales. Very enjoyable.
A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle. I just re-read this for a podcast I was on and I’d forgotten how good it is. Dark and funny and suspenseful and fun.
Would You Rather? by Katie Heaney. A funny, honest memoir about love, relationships, and figuring out who you are.
The Female Persuasion, by Meg Wolitzer. It’s about friendship, mentorship, activism, and what we want from each other, with characters who are all the more compelling because of their flaws. I loved it.
Then She Was Gone, by Lisa Jewell. A woman whose daughter disappeared 10 years ago ends up in a relationship with a man whose daughter looks eerily like her own, and all is not what it seems. I don’t normally read suspense because I find it so stressful, but somehow I started reading this and couldn’t put it down. (And it was stressful! But good.)
Hey Ladies! by Michelle Markowitz and Caroline Moss. The hilarious Hey Ladies column from The Toast is now a book! One of the ladies is getting married, and there are many, many emails to be sent and plans to be made. It’s so, so funny, and you will cringe with recognition.
Ask a Manager: How to Navigate Clueless Colleagues, Lunch-Stealing Bosses, and the Rest of Your Life at Work, by me.  It is time for you to buy it!
My Ex-Life, by Stephen McCauley. Two former spouses, one gay and one straight, reconnect decades later when both of their new lives are falling apart a bit. It’s lovely.
Calypso, by David Sedaris. David Sedaris’s best writing has always been about his family, and his new book focuses exclusively on them. It’s funny and sad, and I loved it and think it might be his best book of them all, and I want to start reading it all over again.
The Mars Room, by Rachel Kushner, about a woman serving two life sentences in prison, how she got there, and how she survives. I was riveted from the first page, and it stays with you.
Tell the Machine Goodnight, by Katie Williams. It plays out around a piece of new technology that tests your DNA and tells you the three things you need to do to be happier (from “take the night bus” to “eat more fruit” to “smile at your wife”), and that concept alone would be enough to keep me interested, but the story itself is about the humans.
Less, by Andrew Sean Greer. Desperate to be away when his ex-boyfriend gets married (and not thrilled about his impending 50th birthday), a novelist decides to accept every invitation to out-of-town literary events that come his way. Beautifully written, smart, and funny.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation, by Ottessa Moshfegh, about a woman who decides she’s going to quit her life and sleep for a year. It made me feel a little gross so I don’t know that I recommend it exactly, but it’s funny and getting lots of acclaim and I haven’t been able to put it down.
Spoonbenders, by Daryl Gregory, the story of the rise and fall and rise of the Amazing Telemachus Family — a family with supernatural gifts. Someone recommended this here last week, and I’m halfway through and totally sucked in.
The Book of Essie, by Meghan MacLean Weir. The teenage daughter of an evangelical preacher whose family has a hit reality show (and a mom scarier than Kris Jenner) gets pregnant and has to figure out how to take back her life from her family.
Crazy Rich Asians, by Kevin Kwan. I finally tried it, and it’s totally decadent and fun.
French Exit, by Patrick deWitt. Reviews have called this a “tragedy of manners.” It’s dark but funny, and there is money and the loss of money and scathing comments and a cat who might not be a cat, and you end up liking characters you shouldn’t like, and it’s basically a delight.
Goodbye, Vitamin, by Rachel Khong. It’s about family and memory and home, and it’s quiet and lovely.
Room, by Emma Donoghue. It’s told through the eyes of a boy who has been held captive with his mother in a small room for years … and then they’re not. Obviously disturbing, but it will grab you and keep you up all night reading it.
Conversations with Friends, by Sally Rooney. Two 20somethings befriend a slightly older couple, and things get messy but the banter is superb.
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, by Hank Green. After alien life comes to earth, the woman who made first contact becomes famous overnight and discovers fame is as weird as aliens.
All You Can Ever Know, Nicole Chung’s memoir of growing up Korean in a white family and later finding her biological family. It’s about race and identity and belonging and it is moving and beautifully written.
Family Trust, by Kathy Wang. It’s about a patriarch who has long promised his family he’s leaving them a fortune when he goes, his two kids, his ex-wife, and his second wife — and how things unravel and come back together for all of them. It’s funny and layered and I loved it.
The Idiot, by Elif Batuman. I don’t know exactly how to describe this book. It’s about early adulthood, but it’s also about language and friendship and love and Russian and trying to find your place in the world. If you want a lot of plot in your novels, this may not be for you, but I really liked it.
Evergreen Tidings from the Baumgartners, by Gretchen Anthony. A very misguided matriarch grapples with change in her family while writing cheerful Christmas letters.
Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist, by Tim Federle. It’s exactly what it sounds like — drink recipes inspired by literature, like the Pitcher of Dorian Grey Goose, Romeo and Julep, Orange Julius Caesar, and more.
Nine Perfect Strangers, by Liane Moriarty. Well, I’m recommending the first half of this book, but then it went off the rails. In an interesting way, but still off the rails.
99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret, by Craig Brown. I love  a good malcontent, and she was that. This book is gossipy and fascinating (for example: she made even close friends call her “ma’am,” and her husband once left a note in her desk headed “24 reasons I hate you”).
