What a difference 81 years makes juxtaposition of Hispano Suiza Xenia Dubonnet, 1938 & Hispano Suiza Carmen, 2019. The "Chantilly Arts et Élégance" concours, held at the Château de Chantilly, just North of Paris, has bought together the remarkable Xenia Dubonnet with the contemporary electric hypercar that it inspired. The Xenia Dubonnet was created by André Dubonnet, an aviator, athlete, racing driver and inventor who knew the potential of Hispano Suiza engines, since he had used them on his airplanes and had competed with them in car races. He decided to purchase a Hispano Suiza H6C, which he personalised with more aerodynamic bodywork and also with the independent suspension system that he himself had patented. He named it after his wife, Xenia

The Mullin Automotive Museum announces that its 1938 Hispano-Suiza H6B Dubonnet Xenia was awarded the 2022 Bridge of Weir Design Award at the Hampton Court Palace Concours of Elegance in the United Kingdom, one of the largest events in England. The Dubonnet Xenia reemerged after WWII outside of Paris in 1946 and it would be purchased by the French Hispano-Suiza Club president in the 1960s. It made its way to California and has been a part of the Mullin Automotive Museum since 2003. It’s powered by an H6 Hispano-Suiza engine and its body was designed by Jean Andreau.

Hispano-Suiza H6B Dubonnet Xenia (1938)

The history of the Hispano-Suiza marque begins in 1898, with Spanish artillery captain Emilio de la Cuadra starting electric car production in Barcelona under the name ‘La Cuadra’. Along the way he met Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt and hired him to work for the company in Spain, before they ultimately got bought out by José María Castro Fernández in 1902 and were renamed ‘Fábrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles’ (Spanish-Swiss Automobile Factory). A bankruptcy followed, but a 1904 restructuring saw them return as ‘La Hispano-Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles’, introducing four new engines over the next two years: a 3.8-litre; a 7.4-litre four-cylinder; and two large six-cylinder units. During World War I, Hispano-Suiza designed and produced aircraft engines under Birkigt’s direction, and is credited with the first practical ‘cast-block’ aero engine, and the first V8 aero engine.

Hispano-Suiza introduced the Marc Birkigt-designed H6 at the 1919 Paris Motor Show. It used a straight-six engine inspired by Birkigt’s aero efforts, but essentially half of his aero V12 design with a new overhead camshaft mechanism that made 160 bhp with a 6.6-litre displacement. It also excelled in the form of braking, using alloy drums all-round with the first power assist the industry had seen – under deceleration, the car would use its own momentum to provide braking power. This technology was later licensed to various other manufacturers, including Rolls-Royce.

This car is completely unique. The car you are looking at is a Hispano-Suiza H6B (a later model, with slightly more power) by clothed in a bespoke body by Saoutchik. The story starts with André Dubonnet, an inventor, racing driver and World War I fighter pilot who made fortunes from his engineering brilliance. To showcase a new independent suspension system he had developed for cars, he purchased a Hispano-Suiza H6 chassis and engine (slightly upgraded to H6C specs) and collaborated with Jean Andreau on its exterior design. The ‘Xenia’ (named after his deceased wife) was fitted with ‘Hyperflex’ suspension of his own design, with him claiming it had “the suppleness of a cat”, hence the Dubonnet logo. This technology was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition and was later used by General Motors with their Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile brands. The Xenia was also the first car to use curved windows, of which moved in a ‘gullwing’ fashion (as the doors hinged back rather than out).

The Xenia was Dubonnet’s personal car and was hidden during World War II, until the opening of the Saint Cloud tunnel in June 1946, where Xenia led the parade.

Hispano Suiza Carmen Electric Hypercar

El famoso fabricante de automóviles Hispano Suiza presenta su primer automóvil de producción desde 1946 en el Auto Show de 2019 en Ginebra.

Nombrado "Carmen" por la nieta del fundador, el nuevo modelo será un hipercoche completamente eléctrico basado en un chasis monocasco de fibra de carbono. El diseño recuerda al Dubonnet Xenia de 1938, un hermoso y futurista automóvil encargado por el piloto francés André Dubonnet y construido por Hispano Suiza.

El tren motriz proviene de QEV Technologies, una compañía que trabaja con equipos de Fórmula E y otros fabricantes. La fotografía de la silueta muestra líneas que imitan al Dubonnet Xenia, pero los detalles son escasos hasta que el automóvil se revele en Ginebra. Espera escuchar mucho más cuando el espectáculo en Ginebra comience el 7 de marzo de 2019.

Hispano Suiza H6C Tulipwood Torpedo, 1924, by Nieuport. A one-off commissioned by André Dubonnet who wanted a lightweight body suitable for racing and touring. Built by aircraft manufacturer Nieuport, the bodywork was formed of 3/4-inch thick wooden ribs covered with 1/8-inch wooden veneer. Once the body was sealed and varnished it weighed approximately 160 pounds. Powered by a 200hp 8 litre engine, Dubonnet drove it to sixth place in the Targa Florio road race and won the Coppa Florio

Hispano Suiza ingresa a la Extreme E y anuncia a sus pilotos para 2021

La marca española Hispano Suiza ha presentado su programa para correr en la Extreme E en 2021 con un equipo oficial. La marca, que nació en 1904, tuvo algo de historia en el automovilismo de las primeras décadas del Siglo XX y celebrará 100 años de las tres victorias consecutivas de  André Dubonnet en la Copa George Boillot  de duración, logradas con el Hispano Suiza H6. Después de casi  60 años sin producir automóviles, en el Salón de Ginebra de 2019 se presentó al modelo eléctrico Carmen y luego al Carmen Bolougne. En ese sentido, la apuesta por la categoría de SUV eléctricos para 2021. El equipo se llamará oficialmente Hispano Suiza Xite Energy Team. 

Hispano Suiza reemplazará a HWA en la lista de participantes de la Extreme E en 2021. La preparadora alemana ha decidido postergar su participación en la categoría por temas de financiamiento y ha traspasado su entrada a Hispano Suiza, por lo tanto sigue habiendo 9 equipos para la primera temporada.

Hispano Suiza no tardó en presentar sus pilotos para la temporada 2021 de la Extreme E, anunciando al británico  Oliver Bennett (Mundial de RallyCross FIA) y a la italiana basada en Canarias,  Christine Giampaoli Zonca (Christine GZ), con experiencia en rally de ruta, la Baja 1000 y que hace un mes obtuvo un tercer puesto en el Andalucía Rally en la categoría T2.

“Hispano Suiza siempre ha integrado en su ADN valores como la deportividad y la competición, ambos de vital importancia para este proyecto. Poder llevar nuestra marca al desierto, al Círculo Polar Ártico o al Amazonas, y además hacerlo de forma competitiva y sostenible cuidando nuestro planeta, esto es algo magnífico que lograremos en una competición tan revolucionaria como Extreme E. Quiero agradecer a nuestros socios y a nuestro equipo técnico la confianza y a nuestros pilotos de carreras, Oliver y Christine, ya que son ellos los que nos permitirán seguir luchando por victorias y buenos resultados, como lo hicimos hace 100 años ” comentó  Miguel Suqué Mateu, Presidente del Directorio de Hispano Suiza.

Estoy seguro de que este es solo el comienzo de una gran aventura para todos nosotros " agregó Oliver Bennett, de 28 años y con experiencia en el Campeonato Británico de RallyCross y en el Mundial de RallyCross FIA además de carreras como Gymkhana GRID.

“Estoy muy emocionada de ser parte del Hispano Suiza Xite Energy Team . Vamos a competir con un vehículo muy poderoso que representa el futuro de la industria automotriz, 100% eléctrico. También tenemos la oportunidad de generar conciencia sobre el cambio climático demostrando que se puede correr en algunos de los lugares más remotos del mundo sin contaminar el planeta” indicó Christine GZ, de 27 años, que obtuvo un 7° lugar en la Baja 1000 en la categoría de UTV y un 3° puesto en T2 en el último Andalucía Rally. “Estoy muy orgullosa de trabajar para una empresa tan innovadora como Hispano Suiza y agradezco mucho la confianza depositada en mí por Avatel. Creo que tener equipos mixtos será una gran oportunidad para dar más visibilidad a las pilotos femeninas y contribuirá a tener una presencia femenina más fuerte en el automovilismo en el futuro. Estoy muy feliz de compartir un coche con Oliver: es un gran piloto, he seguido su carrera desde hace un tiempo y estoy segura de que nos complementaremos a la perfección. Ahora estoy esperando competir y hacer lo mejor para nuestro equipo ".
