#And Ginga is such a good example of that

Since Ginga's a little topic right now I do just want to be clear it was like, incredibly formative to my personality and remains one of my favorite action animes. If I speak harshly about it, it's entirely because I have such a personal affection for it.

Mayblade - Day 29 : Fireworks
Drabble (about 1 000 words)
Characters: Kyouya and Kakeru Tategami
"I love the New-Year festival!" Kakeru exclaimed.
He was so happy to be back home and reunited with his family he felt like he was going to burst. He didn't regret his trip to the United States, but he really missed being home.
It was all the more fun as they were all dressed in kimono for the occasion. His was sober, grey with green flame patterns, like his favorite t-shirt. Their father wore a traditional kimono. Kyouya and their mother had outdone themselves, as usual. Kakeru didn't remember seeing them wearing the same kimono twice. Their mother wore a kimono decorated with flowers, surrounded by silver motifs. Her hair was gathered in a complex chignon and adorned with jewelery. Leone's face was woven into Kyouya's kimono. Silhouettes of leaves and flowers were starting at Leone's face, occupying the entire left half of his kimono. Not to mention the ribbon holding is hair instead of his usual elastic, even if no one should point out to Kyouya it matched the color of the dominant element of the year–black for water, in this case.
"The parents left on their side," commented Kyouya.
"Already?!"
Kakeru glanced around them and realized that, indeed, their parents were already disappearing in the crowd.
Well, we can forget about the family reunion.
"Should we start with the predictions?" Kyouya suggested, pointing at a booth a few steps away.
"For someone who doesn't believe in magic…"
"Don't start." Kyouya's warning was accompanied by a dark look that had no effect on Kakeru. He was 100 percent immune.
Kyouya narrowed his eyes. He waved his index finger. Still without effect. Kakeru hesitated between teasing him–reminding him this time he almost had an attack by drawing the number four, for example–and sparing him. He chose the second option. It would be his best move of the year.
They went to the stand and each pulled out a predictive tablet. Kakeru looked at his own, his heart beating. He returned it with a determined gesture. Good luck. That wasn't bad.
"What did you get?"
Kyouya's little smile answered him before he even returned his tablet. Excellent luck.
"How do you get that every year?"
"I'm the eldest," smuggily answered Kyouya.
"That's not a reason." Kakeru looked at the tablet a little closer. He looked up at his brother." You realize that statistically speaking–"
Kyouya suddenly pointed to another stand. "They sell takoyaki and yakitori there." And to head there with a decided step.
I guess we shouldn't talk about statistics either.
It certainly hurt Kyouya's logic.
But, well. No festival was worthy of that name if you didn't eat. So it wasn't a too annoying change of subject.
Besides, I'm sure he dreamt about Mount Fuji again.
The Tategami brothers enjoyed meals as they walked down the festival aisles. Kakeru let his eyes wander from stand to stand. Many were dedicated to food, of course, but there were also different games–most of them involving Beyblade. The atmosphere was cheerful. Smiles were on all faces. It was a great way to start the year. Kakeru grabbed his brother's arm, startling him. He laughed and walked back. "Sorry."
"You don't look sorry," Kyouya remarked.
"There are ema there, shall we go?"
Kyouya narrowed his eyes, telling him that his change of subject had not gone unnoticed. He crossed his arms but headed towards the ema. "I don't see the point. If you want something, you have to fight for it and not just wish for it."
"You could make a wish about Ginga."
"I don't need a wish to defeat him."
"Of course!" replied Kakeru fervently. "I was thinking of a wish to wish him happiness, good health… The same kind of wish I'm gonna make for you and our parents."
"Sappy."
Kakeru laughed. He took a ema and wrote down his wish. "I'm sure Ginga would need something," he commented by hanging his ema.
Kyouya's disinterest turned into a thoughtful look. He observed the ema as if they held a secret he wanted to know. He grabbed a ema and drew furious ideograms.
"You've come up with an idea."
Kyouya hung the ema with a sigh. "Three years we've known each other, and Ginga had to: face an evil bey, prevent the Atlantis' resurrection, destroy an energy reactor and fight a false god. I want a quiet year, with Beybattles. I'm tired of getting involved in all this stupid stuff."
Kyouya joined hands and closed his eyes, probably to reiterate her wish. Kakeru could picture him address the same words to the gods, complaining about these "stupid stuff".
Kyouya opened his eyes and glared daggers at the ema. Kakeru wouldn't vouch on its chances if Kyouya's wish wasn't granted.
"You helped save the world. That's cool."
"I prefer Beybattles."
"And me, motorcycle tournaments."
Kyouya smiled.
The Tategami brothers continued their wanderings through the festival, stopping at one stand or another. They walked until the fireworks display, for which they miraculously found their parents. Points of light invaded the sky. Sometimes scattered in a shower of sparks, sometimes drawing elaborate shapes–flowers, birds, figures. Kakeru glanced at his parents and brother, captivated by the spectacle. He smiled.
It was really the best way to start the year.

Victory is REALLY cool, i like that Ginga’s simple yet solid design allowed them to make atypical choices with him like his cool head shape and use of black. I didnt really appreciate the fact that Victory is the earliest example of a heroic Ultra that incorporated so much black in his design, which is huge for me because that is by far my favorite trend with New Gen Ultra suits. It also occurs to me that the glowing yellow-orange V-shapes on his head and extremities could be crystals like Ginga has. Very good stuff!!!

Spring 2023 Anime Wrapup
Original Post:
This sure was a season. I finished 14 full-length series, plus some OVAs and carryovers. Undisputed show of the season Oshi no Ko and underrated hit Dead Mount Death Play lead the pack, but there's a range of other content between hate-watchable and actually good as well.
New Stuff:
Oshi no Ko (My Star) - Holy shit. I don't want to say much to avoid spoilers, but it was a 10/10 candidate from episode one and still might end up there on rewatch. For now 9/10, you MUST watch this. There will be a post forthcoming when I process it for a while.
Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta (I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too) - They put the entire power fantasy in the title for your convenience. It's not a great message that all you need to do to become popular is inherit a bunch of money and literally magically change your entire body, but here we are. The power fantasy is truly stratospheric - for example, he accidentally seduces a model and is proposed to by a princess in the space of one episode. The "animation" (or lack thereof) doesn't give the at best mediocre plot the support it needs, alas. A very generous 6/10.
Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise) - Samurai Suicide Squad with a hearty helping of EDGE and a surprising amount of heart. The action was good, even though it sometimes felt like they ran out of time to make things truly excellent. 8/10.
Kanojo ga Koushaku-tei ni Itta Riyuu (The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion) - Another villainess anime, this time with the twist being that she becomes a villainess on purpose in order to save her own life. Most of the time the plot foreknowledge twist was used to undermine typical shoujo tropes rather than heighten them. Between that and the nothing ending, I found it oddly muted. 7/10.
Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School) - I didn't finish this yet, because I don't think I'm ready for the emotional punches it's setting up. Not dropped, just not done.
Skip to Loafer (Skip and Loafer) - A country-girl-in-the-big-city shoujo story, in which our protagonist good-natures her way through a whole stable of stock high school antagonists. I like that given only twelve episodes to work with they didn't speedrun to parts where relationships happen, and instead let the story take its time. This is the first time since Hyouka I've really liked something with this sort of sedate pace. Looking forward to more! 8/10.
Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion) - A trip through the post-apocalypse featuring spooky monsters, bioethics failures, and a mix of hope and despair at how people face life after the end. Worth a watch, but be aware there's some extreme content. 8/10
Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru (Loving Yamada at Lv999) - Shoujo for gamers! Unlike Raeliana above this shoujo with a twist did it for me. For personal reasons I appreciated the respect paid to online relationships. Convincing characters and relationships plus distinct and consistent art make this a very honorable 8/10.
Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door) - A guy touches an alien princess funny and they're married now. Yes, another one. This time, she's his manga assistant. Very light and fluffy, despite the subtheme of family alienation. 7/10, though at the high end for myself.
Dead Mount Death Play - Reverse Isekai! With a name like that you'd expect some serious edge, and there is some. Surprisingly though the themes are very wholesome. This was the biggest surprise of the season. I didn't watch it in the first round of shows, but when I looked at it out of curiosity it blew me away. 9/10, you should really watch this.
Tonikaku Kawaii - This is a sequel, but I hadn't watched the previous season, so it's new to me. I added it later in the season mostly out of curiosity. It turned out to be another entry in the impossibly perfect significant other microgenre, like The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. As with Angel Next Door, the point is that you should be an actual good person. This time it's about the rewards of getting married as soon as possible, and here are step-by-step instructions. There's a subtle-but-not-subtle supernatural undercurrent that becomes increasingly obvious in season 2, as well. 7/10.
Sequels:
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story Season 2 - What can you say about a show that introduces multiple dangerous forbidden techniques in the middle of a tournament arc... of golf? Anyway here's lesbians doing more wacky special moves. If you're into weird sports anime you're sure to be into this. 8/10.
Dr. Stone: New World - There was a lot more yadda yadda this time, so it fell a bit flat. The less they show Senku's work coming up with things the more they feel like instant win buttons instead of things they worked for. I had hoped the cast size constraint in the second half of the season would have let them go back to spending time on inventions, but alas no. 7/10.
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc) - Yep, it was more Demon Slayer. I'm pleased that Demon Slayer has mostly maintained its quality, in contrast with My Hero Academia which fell off a bit in the middle there. 8/10.
Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo Season 2 (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2) - The robots (and lesbians) are cool, but I don't see how it's possible to miss the "war (and unfettered capitalism) is bad" message. It's also a new take on Revolutionary Girl Utena, which I've been meaning to re-watch and write about for some time. No excuse now, I suppose. 8/10.
Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Road to the Top - I forgot to put this on the first list because it's a four episode ONA that hadn't started airing yet. As one of the weird sports anime I actually enjoy, of course I was up for even just a small arc of it. 8/10.
Carryovers:
Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai (Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible) - Finally a bulli anime I can enjoy, thanks to it not actually being bulli for very long. In the end this was a sort of nothing-in-particular show, falling somewhere in the fuzzy area around impossibly perfect SO and teasing anime. As expected it's almost all frosting and no cake, but I did enjoy my time with it. 7/10.
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2 (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. Season 2) - This fell off a bit, and I think I know why. It suffered from the same thing as later Dog Days seasons, where it used its expansive cast by shuffling who hangs out with who. This provides less novelty than the original concept of "what will they get up to now" did, and it also necessarily slows things to a crawl as we need to see more perspectives on every event as a result. Still, the characters remain fun and the game is as busted as ever. 7/10.
Dropped:
Kaminaki Sekai no Kamisama Katsudou - Garbage. A fetish fest with godawful CGI. Rancid vibes. You'll never know where it's going. You may have trouble looking away. I did eventually, though. Dropped at episode 10. 6/10.
Isekai One Turn Kill Neesan: Ane Douhan no Isekai Seikatsu Hajimemashita (My One-Hit Kill Sister) - Lots of Rule D edging. The quality isn't the most consistent, the tropes are basic, and little of value is to be found here. When it's good, it's actually kinda good. Unfortunately it got boring. Dropped at episode 10. 6/10.
Edomae Elf (Otaku Elf) - Elf in real world! Wooo! A nice comfy show. Not much happens, but it's cute enough. Got boring in the end though. Dropped at episode 10. 7/10.
My Home Hero - It's hard to think of anything recently that used tension and suspense to this degree. That said, the every-episode cliffhangers eventually got exhausting and turned me off and I stopped keeping up. 7/10 not for me.

Chibull
Tumblr media
Image © Tsubaraya Studios, accessed at the Ultraman Wiki here
[Ultraseven was a show with an identity problem. It wanted to be a fusion of the first two “Ultra” series, Ultra Q, which was a suspenseful anthology show in the style of The Outer Limits, and Ultraman, which was more action packed and kid-friendly. Which resulted in a number of episodes, particularly early in the series, being moody and atmospheric for 22 minutes, and then Ultraseven just wrecks shop on the monster of the week immediately when he gets the chance to transform. Case in point, Alien Chibull. “Android Zero Directive” is one of the more horror-tinged episodes, but Chibull here goes down with a single shot. The manga gave him ice powers and telekinesis to make the fight last a couple of pages, which I have included here. A much later series, Ultraman Ginga S, made him an arc boss, with a robot suit and the ability to summon and recombine kaiju in classic “make my monster grow” mode.
On another note, is Chibull a racist caricature? The black skin, bulging eyes and giant pink lips make me think of Jynx, Mr. Popo, and other anime characters that borrow from racist iconography. The Chibulls that have appeared in the 21st century haven’t changed drastically in appearance, but that might be because Ultraman is still relatively obscure in the grand scheme of Japanese media.]
Chibull CR 16 LE Aberration This entity is mostly head, with a swollen silver cranium covered in ridges and whorls. Its eyes bulge above a wide mouth. It has three tentacles, each of them covered in multiple rows of small red spikes and tipped with a large silver blade. It levitates in the air effortlessly.
Chibulls are alien crafters and mad geniuses, convinced of their own superiority and obsessed with inflicting it on others. They desire control over wide swaths of people and monsters, and if they do not get it act as petty tyrants to their underlings. Their master plans are notable for their baroque sadism—using mind controlled children to carry out murders with weapons disguised as toys is an example.
A chibull will rarely get its talons dirty itself, preferring to strike from behind layers of dupes and minions. They are typically found in the shape of a member of the species they are currently attempting to conquer, often in a seemingly harmless guise like an old man or child. They carry guns in this form, but also have mind altering and telekinetic powers. If forced into their natural shapes, chibulls fight with claws that they can shoot like bullets. These talons carry the chill of the void and can be enhanced to create icy tombs for those they strike.
All chibulls excel at making both magical and technological devices. They often build constructs to act as their proxies, spies and weapons. Although the chibull presented here has feats relating to magic item creation, some (especially with the resources of their home planet) use technological devices instead, even capable of making robots. A few chibulls, unusually unafraid to get their own hands dirty, have built themselves exoskeleton-like machines in which they can ride around to enhance their combat capabilities.
A chibull is about four feet in length, but levitate at eye level with the tallest person they speak with. Their voices are typically giggling and sardonic.

Current state of Sentai
I've made it no secret that i'm not a big fan of modern sentai, but the Don Brothers reveal yesterday has just thrown me into doomer mode, I watched the trailer in full and cringed through out and I've not been look forward to it since they started show it off. So I'm gonna use this post to have a bit of a rant about it, take a look under the cut if you care.
Okay I need to talk about the elephant in the room... The CGI rangers, two of Don Brothers members are presented as CG characters the only problem with this is...
Tumblr media
The CG and motion capture looks like it came out of fucking Food Fight, I don't know why they went this route but they did and it might look funny and interesting NOW, that is not going to last through 45+ episodes, stuff like this gets old fast.
I'm not one of these people thad just hates CG outright, not at all however toei's tokusatsu CG has never been good enough to carry a whole show on it's back ESPECIALLY when it comes to CG character models.
The next problem I want to hightlight is a trend in more rescent sentai, this Hyper Litteralism that Don Brothers is engaging in, like it's really gimmcky and gives a overall worse looking problem, I'll use Saru Brother as the example;
Tumblr media
He can't just be a blue ranger with a ape theme (Ginga Blue, Blue Buster) He's got to have big furry arms, big stompy boots, a peanut head, and a bright red ass because 'Haha look at the monke' it's really obnoxious and makes the suit look worse, toei never had to be this litteral before so why so I don't get why it needs to be like this.
Next up is something that REALLY bothers me that no one seems to want to talk about and that is well... Sentai Mechs are just CGI now it seems and everyone in the fandom just seems okay with it, It's sad in my opinion, the mechas suits are one of the things I get super excited to see when new sentai comes out and just to know they're not gonna be a thing anymore is depressing, meanwhile I point out how shit awful the CG mechs look I get called "Reductive."
I think this all culminates into something that toei is going to have to face the music on when it comes to sentai, It's fucking dying, you can say i'm full of bullshit, but it's true the last couple of years sentai has been selling fewer and fewer toys each year now do toys decide how good a show is? No, but when the whole point of your show is to sell toys? I'm gonna say that it's important.
Tumblr media
Zenkaiger Matched TimeRanger in terms of toy sales making it one of the worst selling sentais of all time, Let's compare to another toei toku show.
Tumblr media
Kamen Rider Rivice sold more merch in it's first quarter, than Zenkaiger did in a year.
Current sentai producer Shirakura even admited before Zenkaiger started said that Sentai wasn't in a good place and new steps had to be taken to ensure it's continued survival.
I say pull the fucking plug, let Sentai go though what the other two of the big 3 shows (Sentai, Rider, Ultraman) went through and go off the air for a bit, let new talented creators dust it off after a few years of letting it sleep and revitalise it. IT FUCKING NEEDS IT THE MILK HAS RUN DRY GUYS.
That's it rant over.

Original interview in Finnish from 2016: http://satanicangingablogi.blogspot.com/2016/06/haastattelussa-pureplastic.html --- Where did PurePlastic begin? When and where was it set up and by whom? How many people in the company are spinning? - PurePlastic has been on my mind for almost eight years. From the very beginning, when Ginga merch were still quite affordable, I dreamed of having bigger and more spectacular products on offer.
The actual name and founding took place a couple of years ago in the aftermath of Tracon. I talked about the product idea with my co-workers and we developed the name PurePlastic. Before that, of course, the activity had been going on for several years. PurePlastic was not officially registered on paper until half a year ago.
The team is quite small in the end and it changes. In practice, I (the main devil), the negotiator on the Japanese side, the design of the products (1-4 people) and then the well-known fans from whom I asked for opinions when the products finally started to take some physical form.
What was the process for obtaining permits from Japan to manufacture new ginga products? - It was a lot of work = D Contact began in August 2012 and permits were obtained here recently. The project therefore took more than three years to negotiate. In addition to this, it took me about a year and a half to find the correct rights holders.
How is PurePlastic different from other ginga merch manufacturers? - PurePlastic is the first non-Japanese company to manufacture products. During the negotiations, I also got the impression that many previous companies (TopSangyo, Akatsuki Industrial) were tightly tied to the publisher. A considerable part of the products were also manufactured by the publishing house itself.
Could the products be called ethical? Their ethics have been ensured as far as possible.
China was chosen as the country where plushies are made because China now has fairly good laws to protect workers ’rights and environmental issues. By comparison, Bangladesh and India would be much cheaper, but in both of them things are completely out of the question. Of course, China also has its problems, but it is moving in a better direction.
I have not visited the factories myself, but I have received pictures of the factory's working premises and the factory has been inspected on behalf of a Finnish representative and no defects have been found there. In addition, the factory's work is carried out only at the factory and not by subcontractors. (In practice, subcontracting means that workers take work home to sew.) WWF has commissioned some plush toys from the same company, which also speaks to the quality of the company.
However, there are no official certifications or other with plushies, because in China, certificates can usually be purchased or requested separately and does not affect the actual operation of the factory in any way. Only by getting acquainted with the operation of the factory can you really know the side of things.
Plushies have CE certification, which makes them suitable as toys. This certificate is a guarantee of the quality of the product, meaning no small parts are released from the plush, the fabric used in it has not been treated with harmful substances and all the plushies, for example, are screened separately to ensure that no needles remain during the manufacturing process. The poster factory, on the other hand, is 100 meters from my apartment and I have been able to see their details in detail.
The prices of TopSangyon WEED plushies are amazing today. How can PurePlastic keep prices significantly more affordable? - TopSangyo’s prices were originally humane, but then production stopped and prices went up. The problem with many other products is that they have to be ordered to Finland through middleman services, which can easily triple the price of the product. Many of the products sold in Japan are also made into really small batches, making them a rarity almost as soon as they appear. On the other hand, in the back of the Iinu mobile phone case, for example, there is also the brand of the manufacturer, which raises the price.
PurePlastic manufactures large batches, which also keeps prices low. The products have also not (yet) received a collection status, as they can be purchased as new. The big batches, on the other hand, are relative: although Weed plushes are made in a four-digit batch, Hougen and Mer for example on the other hand, we talk about few hundreds of pieces, and the batches are HUGE from my point of view.
Plushies seem to be an absolute attraction for the company, at least for now. Will we see something else as great and exciting in the future, or perhaps something that has not been seen from other manufacturers so far? (If you can't answer this directly, "no comment" or "yes / no" is enough.) - I hope to see new products. I have all sorts of plans, dreams and epic ideas for new products, in addition to which I would especially like to expand the plushie range to include old GNG characters. The whole thing is based on one question: are the products selling well enough? The first review of the sale will be made a couple of weeks after the release of the plushies, the second after the end of the con season in Tracon and the third after Christmas. After these reviews, we then start thinking about the future. (The waiting time is also due to the fact that in the meantime many have already had time to get the products and get them to admire for themselves, so you can get feedback on the products as well).
PurePlastic was a big surprise for fans. How did it feel to keep this matter a secret for so long? - Terrible. = D
During these four years, I have had the following conversations with at least 20 different people:
"Do you know what you should do? Try to get the rights to make Ginga products! So many people want this stuff and only a few can afford to buy it for 200 euros soft. You should ask for the rights!" And then I smiled really hard and said the idea was really great. I would have liked to have told you about this as soon as possible, but think of it as a disappointment if I had reported it at Christmas 2012 (when Takahashi announced that the manufacture of merchandise would be okay to him). And then nothing would have happened for many, many years.
Can you design the merchandise yourself from start to finish, or does someone else do it for you or with you? - Both. I have virtually full control over what products are made, what characters, and what images. Admittedly, the full right to block the ideas is up to Takahashi and other representatives of the publishing house, meaning that if something does not please them, they can reject the idea. Admittedly, I haven’t come up with an idea they could deny. Hug pillows? On the plushies, the original designs have been drawn by Polecat, which helped a lot in making the plushies. If the product range is expanded in the future, I will probably need more people to help design the products.

Puppetry Lost Media
Tumblr media
In honour of reaching 50 followers last week (now 55 followers, as of writing this) I decided to cover two subjects of great interest to me: puppetry (of course) and lost media.
Everybody online loves a good old bit of lost media. Whether it be being a part of the many searches for the media in question, or watching documentaries about them on sites like YouTube. I’ve been mildly addicted to the latter kind of content for a while. From what I’ve seen, though, there aren’t many videos or articles out there specifically covering lost puppetry. So, in no particular order, here are a couple of pieces of lost puppetry I found while scrolling through the lost media wiki.
銀河少年隊 - Ginga shounen-tai AKA Galaxy Boy Troop (1963 - 1965)
Tumblr media
Osamu Tezuka is one of the most pioneering figures in Japanese art and animation. Starting as a manga artist in the 1940s inspired by the animated works of American studios such as Walt Disney and the Fliecer Brothers, he adapted and simplified many of the stylistic techniques of both artists to create his own signature style of big shiny eyes, physics defying hair and limited animation. A style that would go on to heavily influence the world of anime and manga as a whole.
But animation and graphic art were not the only mediums Tezuka would dabble in. Ginga Shounen-Tai, or Galaxy Boy Troop in english, was a television series that aired on the public broadcast channel NHK from April 7th, 1963 to April 1st, 1965. Running for 2 seasons with a total of 92 episodes.
The series was a mixture of marionette characters that utilised the Supermarionation marionette technique, popularised by Jerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds, and limited traditional animation. The story revolves around a child genius named Roy who leads a rag-tag group of heros around the galaxy in a rocket ship in order to revive the earth’s sun and later protect it from alien invaders.
Tumblr media
Out of the 92 episodes that aired, only episode 67 still exists in its entirety with French subtitles, and the full episode can be found on YouTube with English subtitles uploaded by user Rare TezukaVids. According to user F-Man on the Tezuka in English forums, footage of episode 28 exists but with no audio, and episode 87’s animated segments exist without the marionette segments. F-Man also claims the reason for Galaxy Boy Troop’s disappearance is due to Tezuka not being proud of the series and having all episodes of it destroyed.
Personally, I think it’s a shame that pretty much all of this series is gone. From what I’ve seen in episode 67, it looks really charming. Tezuka’s signature character design style was adapted suprisingly well to marionettes, and the puppetry itself isn’t that bad either. I love the little face mechanisms like the blinking eyes, flapping mouths and others. It gives the puppets a lot of personality and charm. Like, just look at this old mans eyebrow mechanism and tell me you wouldn’t want to watch 92 episodes of this show;

Tinseltown (2007)
Tumblr media
Tinseltown was a 15 minute sitcom pilot created by the Jim Henson company under thier Henson Alternative banner. The pilot was commissioned by the Logo Network and aired as part of the Alien Boot Camp programming block in 2007.
The pilot (and likely the series, had it been picked up by the logo network) features a cast of both puppets and live actors as characters. The premise revolves around Samson Kight, an anthropomorphic bull preformed by Brian Henson and drew Massey, and his partner Bobby Vegan, an anthropomorphic pig prefomed by Bill Barretta and Michelan Sisti, as they attempt to balance thier lives working in Hollywood with life as parents to thier sullen 12-year-old foster son, Foster, played by Paul Butcher. Other human characters included Mia Sara as Samson’s ex-wife Lena and Francesco Quinn as the family’s manservant Arturo.
The Tinseltown pilot used to be available on the Logo Network’s YouTube channel, but was later removed for unknown reason. Since then, the pilot has not been made available online. However the characters Samson and Bobby have made appearances in other Henson related works, such as the improv stage show Stuffed and Unstrung, where they played the role as the shows producers, and in a 2011 video on the Jim Henson Company YouTube channel celebrating Jim Hensons 75th birthday.
Tumblr media
I find Tinseltown pretty interesting as I feel like it should be more noateable or known, considering that this is (as far as my knowledge goes) the first Jim Henson Company project featureing openly lgbtq characters as its leads, and would have been the first Henson show to do so had it been picked up. As someone who’s interested in lgbtq+ representation in creative media such as animation, I realised that there’s not many examples of canon lgbt characters in puppetry. The only ones aside from Samson and Bobby I could think off the top of my head would be Deet’s Dads from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Rod from Avenue Q. Though, obviously, there could be more I’m not currently aware of. I don’t think the Tinseltown pilot was a masterpiece or anything. After all, there’s probably a couple of good reasons Logo didn’t pick it up for a full series. But I think it be cool if either Henson co. or Logo made this available online again, if just so we could appericate it as an interesting little footnote in the history of lgbtq rep in puppetry.
With that said, considering the pilot’s obscurity and the fact that it’s main couple haven’t been used in any Henson Related projects in almost ten years, as well as the possibility that there may be legalities preventing the Henson company from releasing it such as Logo still owning the rights, it’s unlikely we’ll see the Tinseltown pilot anytime soon.
Sonic Live in Sydney (1997 - 2000)
Tumblr media
Sonic the Hedgehog is a fictional character no stranger to multiple interpretations of him and his universe across a diverse range of media. From the more light-hearted and comedic stylings of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Cartoon Networks Sonic Boom cartoon series, to more serious faire such as the Sonic SatAM cartoon and the Sonic Adventure videogame duology. One of the more obscure and stranger adaptations of the character came in the form of Sonic Live in Sydney, a one an a half hour live show hosted at the former Sega World Sydney amusement park in Darling Harbor, Sydney, Australia. Originally beginning as a live show with actors in meet-and-greet style costumes, the show eventually was replaced with a puppet show during its last two years.
The shows plot was set in an alternate timeline whos continuity was a mix of the SatAM cartoon and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Doctor Robotnik’s Death Egg crash lands in Sydney, Australia instead of Angel Island and attempts to take over before being foiled by sonic and friends. According to Phillip Einfeld of Phillip Einfeld Puppetoons, the company that made the puppets, Sega felt the costumed actor version of the show wasn’t dynamic enough, and wished to replace it with a version featuring live puppets with animatronics. Both versions of the shows plot are identical.
While Sonic Live in Sydney’s soundtrack is available on YouTube, and some photos of the show are available on the Lost Media Wiki, no footage of either the costumed actors version or the puppet show version have resurfaced. The show was closed down in 1999, possibly due to cost, shortly before the Sega World park as a whole in 2000. So unless there is someone out there who viseted the show between 1998 or 1999 who recorded the show via a handheld camera, footage of both incarnations of the show are likely forever lost to time.
On a personal note, I don’t have much to say on this one other than how gloriously peek gaudy 90s Sonic the set/puppet design is. I have no doubt finding footage of these puppets in action would truly be a silly delight to behold...
Legend of Mary (year unknown)
Tumblr media
This one is a little different from the other entries on this list as while the film itself in its entiraty is available on YouTube for anyone to view, the information surrounding Legend of Mary, specifically its year of release, remains a mystery as of writing this.
I have mentioned the film before on this blog so I’ll keep it brief here: in summary, Legend of Mary is a short film retelling of the Nativity featuring the Rod puppets of Austrian puppeteer Richard Teschner. the video was uploaded to YouTube by user canada 150 archive. I looked up the people credited in the film and was able to find most of them, but didn’t find Legend of Mary listed in thier credits, and was unable to find the film on sites like IMDB, tMDB or Letterboxd. I reached out to Canada 150 archive asking if they had any info regarding the Legend of Mary’s release date, and after a coupe of months, they replied saying they didn’t know.
And that’s as far as I got on my search for answers, if anyone of you guys has any information regarding Legend of Mary, then it be of huge help in finding the release date.
Sam and friends (1955 - 1961)
Tumblr media
Sam and friends was the very first puppetry television series created by Jim Henson alongside his colabarator and future wife Jane Nebel. filmed in Washington, D.C. and airing twice daily on WRC-TV and the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C. from May 9, 1955, to December 15, Sam and Friends would mark the first apperence of Kermit (though not yet as a frog) and paved the way for Henson’s iconic and revered legacy in the realm of puppetry on film and television.
With the impact this show had in mind, it may come as a shock to some that almost half of Sam and Friends, specifically, 42 of the 86 episodes, are considered lost. With 16 existing, 8 documented, 9 known from memory, plus 8 existing Esskay commercials and 1 memory-known Esskay commercial. Some taped episodes have been shown at venues such as the museum of the moving image while others have been erased. It’s unknown if copies of these erased episodes still exist.
This post would become far to long if I were too list every episode missing from Sam and Freinds, but if your curious, the lost media wiki article has a comprehensive list of all lost episodes.
Tumblr media
Annnd that about it for this post. This type of content is pretty different from the stuff I usually post. So I’m egar to see what you guys think about it. If you enjoyed this article, want to see more like it or have ideas for what puppetry-related topics I should cover in the future. And again, thank you all so much for helping me reach 55 followers. Your support really does mean a lot to me, and I hope you enjoyed this as a follower milestone gift.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed this dip into lost puppetry, and have a happy holiday season!

Do you have any hopes for Ultraman Decker? Is there anything from Dyna that you want to see expanded on, like the Spires?
Ah yes indeed
As I've pointed out, since the Sphires seem to also be an integral part of the Decker series like Dyna, especially now that Decker's antagonist also hails from the future as well as the existence of King Sphere
I suspect that there's an inherent link between all of these known factors which would likely tie in to the existence of sphires in Dyna as well
Wouldn't be a far-fetched idea to say that perhaps Decker's antagonist created Sphires for a large-scale invasion cause the sphires have very convenient abilities to quickly amass a legion. Not far-fetched either to suggest that he can do that as well since we also know from leaks that Teraphaser originally belonged to him before somehow falling into the hands of GUTS Select. And the possible link between Decker and Dyna here is that Decker's antagonist possibly sent his sphires throughout time and space to amass legions throughout the space-time continuum. With potentially a 'leader' being put in charge of each invasion like Grand Sphere and King Sphere for example
Tho this means that after Decker, on top of the Devil Splinter spreading throughout the Multiverse, they're now aware of a potentially bigger problem of Sphires being set loose throughout the spacetime continuum, which conveniently enough, once UGF 3 wraps up with the Absolutians and the Ultra species as a whole making peace, this is actually a problem that Tartarus can actually assist the Ultras with, so theres a very convenient linkage setup there already. Also yeah that's another expectation, but I guess this goes for all subsequent series post Z, that the main series will somehow integrate with the UGF series
And another aspect I hope they'll get into is Decker himself and how did he came across the Ultra Dimension Card
A tangentenial point along this line of discussion I had with a follower of mine recently is just how far in the future did Decker and his antagonist come from, relative to where Ginga and Dark Lugiel did. Because I hope it'll help shed some light on just why did Ginga and Dark Lugiel came to the present back in 2013.
While Dyna would most likely soow up in Decker, I dont expect them to draw other characteristic parallels between the two since their origins are fundamentally different. Where Tiga and Dyna were of the same species, because Trigger's origin wasn't revealed, I don't expect Decker's to be as well. And if that's the case, I don't expect that aspect of Dyna to be expanded upon here. Especially since if you noticed, they didn't attach the 'New Generation Dyna' in Decker's title. Plus, Dyna's series didn't had much to expand upon unlike Tiga.
Other than that, from the outset, we can more or less kinda guess what forms are Decker going to have as pointed out in my design review. His Super and Final form is kinda obvious if you read watched Dyna and read the Dyna magazine (I think it's the one where the 'Zero Drive to the future' novel is from iirc)
Can't say much about the Decker movie yet, as I've also pointed out that I expect the movie plot to totally come out of left field like Saga, with potentially Z and X in the mix. Either those two or with Trigger and someone else. Which would inherently link with the various Saga references TsuPro has been not so subtly throwing around in Chronicle D
On the other hand, I expect a very good story from Decker since we kinda already know what's up with the action side of things. Especially since unlike Trigger, they aren't just only gonna use 20% of their originally planned content.
Tbh I'm more interested in what's in store for New Gen Gaia relatively speaking, cause there are more exciting factors they can play around with and implement in the series if you've seen the original plan for Gaia and Ginga
Thanks for the question!

Top 5 fictional animal characters :3c
Oh this was HARD!!!! And even I obsessed over this for few hours I still feel like I’m forgetting someone actually important but !!!!! Let’s try!!!!!!!
Ok first one is character that I do not like at all, I dont think I even sympathize with him but I think he’s fantastically written and I feel like I understand the point and motives of this bitch but I know some of yall will cringe at me for picking him but still! my first pick is:
-Walter White. I think he’s just so good depiction of how dangerous it can be when you have unresolved issues and you’re in a tight spot, like the cunt started as good ™ man who worked hard and did his best to provide for his family, but the cancer and the bitterness most people seem to overlook made him to spiral into such monster..!
I just seriously think that he’s so good example what might happen when someone who has mental baggage and toxic and unprocessed bitterness is pushed too far
......Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I only now noticed the animal part of the ask asdfghjhkg anyway my other picks for top 5 characters would’ve been Edward Elric, Dean Winchester, Ragnar Lodbrok and Nuuskamuikkunen (aka Snufkin) who I also thought to write little essays of!!!
But!!!!!!!! Animals!!!!!! Ok ok ok lets seeeeeeee
(I had to get my thoughts out of my system so dude rambling is under cut too!!)
1. Moro from Mononoke Hime, the wolf mother, I just love her she’s fierce and dangerous but also nurturing and kind enough to raise a human among her pups, I think Moro is just one of the good wolves in media, like good as in pretty correct, not a pet but also not a mindless killing machine either!!
2. Black Beauty, the main character from the movie with same name, idk he just is so horse, he just keeps being kind and nice and working even after all the shit he has to put up with because he trusts that some people are good too. Yes that movie makes me cry, yes I’m emotional of horses!!!!!
3. Scar from Lion King, he’s queer coded!!! He’s got this greasy style!!! His moral compass is set on whatever!!! He just lies and cheats and don’t give a shit of anyone! Gotta love a good villain!
4. Akame from Hopeanuoli/Ginga, idk he’s got style, plus also gotta love a bitch who decides just not to give a shit of old tradition he notices are just empty, like ‘’hey I just now noticed there’s actual problems in world and us guarding some old scrolls ain’t one, bye boys i’mma burn this place!’’
Ok last one shall beeeee...!
5. Balto!!! As a weirdo myself the whole conflict of not feeling like belonging with either dogs nor wolves, might I say, mood.
Really tho I think Balto is one of the rare cases where main character dude being an underdog (hehe) don’t come with the scott pilgrim -syndrome so thats neat,
and I just really liked and i still like to see an outsider find self worth in their true self and, AND!! becoming cherished part of community!!!
So there we go!! Did I overthink this? Absolutely!!! Did I ramble too much? Mayhaps!!! But yeah, here we goooo! And yes theres what I originally thought for this ask before properly reading it under the cut!!! XD
Thank u for the ask anyhoo <3
Yes!!!!! My semi-planned rambling of my boys went here before I could think if best animals!!! so yeah!!! walter is a cunt but the rest of these choices i actually do love so!
Edward Elric, a bastard!!! I love that in any character!!! He’s just so well written too, like he’s the big brother, he has responsibilty, he knows he needs to do stuff no one else can, he’s smart but in believable way so it doesn’t feel too god-like etc, the trauma!!! the tenacity!!! and at the end of the day behind all of he’s just a teenage who lost almost everything and just..... *clenches fist* yeah......
Dean Winchester, yes another big brother but this dude is whole different story, yes he had to look after himself and his little brother but there was also terrifying father figure present to beat him up (mentally, possibly physically too?) for any mistake like its telling he gives Dean shit about car maintenance even when he’s over twenty so....... and yes big part of Dean character isn’t probably what writers intended but I don’t care, i just like what i see in him and his macho-mask and what else!!!
Ragnar Lodbrok, yes also a historical figure but we’re talking about the dude from vikings show obviously!! I just LOVE how he’s a very manly man and etc blah blah but also soft..! He’s a family man!! he loves his wife!!! plays with his kids!!! he’s a leader sure but his real interest isn’t power or gold he just wants better life for his family and people!!! He loves good soil over gold!!!! but he’s also not a perfect ™, he has his weaknesses and his morals can be interesting to say at least, I just adore his vibe and the self confidence!!!!!
and then, Nuuskamuikkunen, he’s perfect being, this bitch has it all figured out, acab, fuck the stupid rules and just yes!!! if I didn’t love my trinkets and place for creating art so much I would absolutely live in a tent too, or at least with life that fits in single backpack!!!

(bread) I forgot to attach my actual question to the prevous ones, and that was what is your favourite example of a driver's appearance being 'altered' by a new toy?
A bunch that come to mind since it's a pretty big category:-
- W Xtreme is a classic for just completely shoving stuff over the driver and turning it into a big X. I just... I just love that thing, it looks so cool
- W FangJoker is also great come to think of it. Just fuckin put a big T-rex head on the left side why not
- Ghost Mugen/Sin Specter is of course very simple but... I dunno, I just always liked it? I really appreciated the little infinity symbol on top, it was neat. I guess also because no other upgrade had done that yet it felt particularly special
- Ex-Aid Muteki is fucking insane honestly I can't not mention it. Just. JESUS what was going on here. First you had Maximum's pop-up Ex-Aid figure button and then you slide this big gaudy gold chunk of whatever on that flips down to reveal its own display and now your Gamer Driver looks somehow even uglier than it already did. Best best best gotta love Ex-Aid <3
- Cross-Z Magma/Grease Blizzard is SO GOOD. I like how it folds onto the driver into a sort of display and to begin with I love the audacity of it literally being a knuckle that you slam in there. Such a great little toy
- Zi-O Trinity is pretty great, isn't it? Completely replacing the display and in a way that you've got three watch things in a row almost. Makes for a very different appearance
- Woz Ginga is also just awesome. Suddenly just got this big wheel thing as part of the belt that adds a lot of function to it. Really cool
- Zero-Two and the other 01 driver attachments is kinda cheating because the whole point of it both in lore and in toy is that you're literally making a new driver, but... but come onnnn. That's cool! That's SO cool! They done so much with this little idea and it's so great
- Rampage Gatling is kind of a small one but the fact it makes the Shotriser look like a different type of gun entirely? Best best best. Love this thing just another way in which Rampage Gatling is one of the all-timers

Why Orion is the most unfairly treated dog in Ginga (both in-universe and by the fandom) and why Rigel is actually kind of a cunt when you think about it
So recent chapters of the nightmare that is Ginga Densetsu Noah have me thinking real fuckin’ hard. Rigel’s now been named Supreme Commander, and I have some serious fuckin’ problems with that considering the literal first thing he did when given the chance to do something leader-y was nearly hand over all of Ohu (right after the Monsoon battle, mind you) to the cunt who captured and nearly crippled his dad, like sure yeah Weed’s a cuntrag and deserves it but Rigel should actually give a shit about him, yet he does this shit anyway. And yeah, maybe this was a trick to go and get reinforcements later but one, I highly fuggin doubt Yip Yip was just gonna be like “Ok cool yall can leave then” when, again, look at what happened to Weed and the Nokizaru, and two, he could’ve brought that shit up with Ohu they were literally right there next to him he could’ve whispered some shit and then pretended like they were consulting it’s not like Yip Yip and the Akashit Squad are all that smart. But that’s besides the point. I bring up Rigel because people are real fuckin’ quick to act like he’s the good brother and Orion’s not worth shit, huh. Orion’s been done real dirty since GDWO and I’ll tell you why.
First of all, no one actually fucking tells Orion calmly when he’s doing something wrong, not even in the beginning of GDWO, they all just fucking screech at him about how he’s a little shit which ofc is gonna make him wanna act out out of spite, and it’s never his parents that do anything, no it’s always other adults who SAY they oughta do something but don’t do it. You could say that maybe they tried being more patient before but we don’t see that and they only ever do this with Orion and not Rigel, who also does crazy shit like that. You’d think Kyoushiro of all fucking dogs would see that Orion’s a tough guy like him and take him under his wing but I guess not because Orion is everything Weed isn’t and Jyoushiro’s quarter of a braincell can’t handle that apparently
Then there’s the fuckin ending of GDWO when Weed isn’t even subtle about how much he worships Sirius’s little baby dick for looking and acting just like him, taking him off to battle and not idk the fucking puppy who’s actually killed two guys because he’s had fighting experience but go off, and then there’s that shit Gin did like yeah punish Orion for not wanting to leave the rest of the army (when he really should not give a fuck about them because clearly they don’t value him). And double fuck you to this fake ass Ohu Army for just standing there and watching Orion get beat for doing something none of them have the balls to fucking try and do, even Izou like wtf man u were more of a dad to Orion in this whole manga why tf are you standing there man
Now Rigel started off like Orion and was a spicy boi who swore and picked on Bella but he had character development with Terumune and learned to be more chill which is cool there’s nothing wrong with that. You know what is wrong with that tho? Rigel’s weird ass behavior of acting like he and Orion weren’t them bois cutting up together in GTLW and GDN, like I know Rigel mostly just fucks off and hangs out in the background but he really acts like he doesn’t know his own brother when he opens his mouth like for example that scene where Rigel just runs the fuck off like a bitch when Orion is pouring his heart out to him
Let’s back up a bit and talk about that for a moment, Gin and Akame really set Orion to fail by being hella cryptic, whether it was Akame seeing that Orion was trying his hardest to try and answer his questions correctly and then WHISPERING SHIT TO SIRIUS LIKE UM DO YOU NOT SEE THAT ORION ALREADY HAS ANXIETY AND IS TRYING TO DO WHAT YOU WANT? and then fucking Gin with his whole “If you move, Paradise will fall and everyone’s gonna fuckin die” like gee thanks Gin why not some actually helpful shit like “Hey, make sure everyone recovers and is doing alright before we plan a new attack” no just scare the piss out of Orion so he’s constantly second guessing himself and has to jump off a cliff to calm down because talking to someone won’t fuckin’ help, so with that in mind, why the FUCK is Rigel acting like Orion’s the selfish one for wanting to go with his friends and protect them from whatever stupid bullshit Sirius and Monsoon are doing??? Rigel doesn’t even apologize or even just stops to talk things over with what should be his closest brother, but nah just bring Chibi’s worthless token good bear ass back and act like everything’s cool, great plan Mr. Supposedly Best Leader Material
I already brought up GDN and why Rigel’s stupid ass decisions make him even worse of a choice for leader than Sirius, but you know what would be a good idea? if Gin had just never fucking retired in the first place, or better yet, actually fucking give Orion the advice he needs and not be weird and act like he’s the problem when you shitasses are just standing around waiting for him to fail
This rant got a little rambly and I apologize but if you managed to get through to the end then that’s hot that’s hot
So uh yeah that’s a load of my chest see ya

When mercy was bad
So I've spoken about how I'd like to see more mercy in the media that I watch. But that doesn't mean all mercy is better than violence. In the much-maligned anime version on Ginga Densetsu Weed, an anime about wild dogs fighting each other, there are two examples of mercy that felt wrong. First is the character Kamakiri, an older irish wolfhound who was very much not a good person. After a very violent battle, Kamakiri has lost his fangs, his balls and is very much bleeding on the snow. These dogs aren't warrior cats, they don't have doctors. The series protagonist still decides that they should leave Kamakiri alive. Mind you, no one is going to -help- him, but he gets to live. Until the crows come. That scene was disturbing, because it was all but murder of the older dog. Just not directly. Another scene is right at the end of the series, as the main villain Hougen has been gravely wounded, and the leader of the dogs decides to kill him. Once more, Weed steps on and shames the leader of the dogs for DARING to kill another. This felt wrong, because the bad guy was once again wounded and letting him live was not going to do any good for anyone. Indeed, he was later killed by a lightning strike. In both cases, mercy is an excuse to get out of killing, not actual offer of a new life. It is no mercy if there is no hope of recovery, it is just cowardise.

Kyouya, the Dark Power and character's development
Tumblr media
Some says that Kyoya regresses a lot between Fusion and Masters (and accuse the Dark Power of it) but I disagree.
In Fusion, he's being drawn in the whole fight against the Dark Nebula, and things went fast : he came to his senses after the Wolf Canyon, learnt of the Forbidden Bey's existence (you know ? Kyouya Tategami, who didn't believe in magic and thought it was nonsense until they went to the Dark Nebula Castle), then he went looking for Ginga.
Kyouya isn't used to be around people who aren't his lackeys. You can see it when he first travels with Benkei, Kenta and Madoka. He seemed out of place, not really knowing how to react. He let Benkei (after the Wolf Canyon) and Ginga (at Koma) take him into their arms. Some days later he decided he needed something called "personal space" and pushed away people when they are too near to him (like he did with Benkei).
After this, the Battle Bladers was announced. The whole group did their best to qualify and the Battle Bladers began. Kyouya had no time to think about the way he wanted to act with others. Between Fusion and Masters, he had (too much maybe) time to think and plan how he wants to behave with others and, especially, how he wants to behave as Ginga's rival.
In season 1, he was so angry to have lost against he teamed up with the Dark Nebula (he kind of promise it, but nonetheless...). Then he came back with his worst behaviour ever (poor little town guy who didn't imagine being in the wilderness was so hard xD). In next seasons, he only went away when he's pissed off. It's a great improvement !
Two other examples of improvement : - In season 1, he blames his Face Hunter after he lose against Ginga but, in season 2, he acknowledges the Wild Fang lose because of him, after Nile blamed himself (what he could have easily used). - In season 2, he refuses to be part of the Japanese Team, but in season 3, he decides to travel with the group, while no one asked him yet (it doesn't end perfectly, but it was a good start).
Kyouya's wish to defeat Ginga isn't caused by the Dark Power. It was present since he met him in the first season : their first battle, the Wolf Canyon, his "rivalry" with Hyouma, the Battle Bladers (in particular the semi-final where he spent his time saying he would defeat Ginga, didn't care about Ryuuga and that Ginga want to fight with him).
Kyouya wasn't affected by the Dark Power. He had no aura, no flashback of his duel with Ryuuga, no traumatized look that characterized Tsubasa and Hikaru when they suffered the Dark Power. It didn't do anything to him. His worst (and only) breakdown (or outburst) was at the very begining of the series, after the Wolf Canyon, long before he knew Ryuuga and the Dark Power existed.
About his obsession of Ginga... Ginga is the very first one who have won over him. Kyouya is (slightly ?) a bad loser. To refuse to become a part of the japanese team is completely in his course of action. He wanted to defeat Ginga and, if he teamed up with him, he couldn't. So he had searched another way to take part in the World Championship BEFORE he started the selections. When he talked with Ginga after defeating Tsubasa, he told him so with hints and half-words.
So the Dark Power has exactly no effet on Kyouya (and his behavior evolved).

… Today on ‘Are we watching the same show?’…
I have literally just a comment saying Gai in now one of the ‘saddest’ characters in KR, un-ironically, bc of this ep, and then another saying that they’ve forgiven him bc ‘locking up part of what you love is painful.’
……
………
PEOPLE DIED.
He shot Naki.
He was horrible to Yua and ordered her to kill Fuwa, and maybe had those two other AIMS guys killed (or where they the ones that came back?).
He had Fuwa kidnapped (?) from his family and implanted w/ false, traumatising memories.
Which also shows he understood perfectly well that the Daybreak Incident was horrible and painful and traumatising and would permanently scar anyone involved.
He knowingly, deliberately created the Ark.
God knows what else he did.
He shot Naki.
HOW MANY DIFFERENT WAYS DO I HAVE TO REMIND YOU PEOPLE DIED????
This isn’t Tomoya from Ultraman Ginga. I hated what Parad’s arc in Ex-Aid, and it was better than this, bc at least Parad had some of a point about videogame characters being made to die, even if it didn’t actually really apply to him. Parad’s brain also worked completely differently than a humans and while I think the bungled it, part of the point was making him understand human emotion.
Gai is completely human. Gai is forty-five. He’s not some innocent young kid who’s under pressure from his father to get good grades anymore. He had plenty of time to have other experiences and to learn. They had plenty of time to introduce him having something deeper than basic pettiness much earlier. They choose to make him do all that stuff w/ no sign or remorse, but suddenly he’s being forgiven bc it’s ‘painful’??? I’m sorry, but I refuse to believe you can get through life acting like Amatsu Gai and never have anyone call you out on it ever. There’s no way. There would have been something that would eventually have led to some kind of intervention.
No. I do not forgive Gai. I refuse to accept ‘oh, he was just a sad little sheltered boy.’ This is like trying to claim Nanba took the Nanba Children in out of the goodness of his heart, that he did everything he did bc ‘he was just a lonely man who wanted a family.’ This is like trying to force sympathy onto Banno. This is why I didn’t watch the Build follow up film bc it tried to do something slightly like this to Evolt, who, while he is an alien who clearly is operating off a completely different card deck and also has the ‘brain works in a different way’ thing, was equally as awful. They’re trying to pull a Sonozaki Ryuubei or Sonozaki Saeko. But w/ Ryuubei, it was made clear he was completely deluding himself and was completely mentally imbalanced by that point, and Saeko they steadily, slowly introduced her issues early and just built upon them (even as early as the first ep when Wakana arrives late to dinner). Saeko was a murderer and an abuser, and they managed to make me feel pity for her bc of how Ryuubei was presented. I also felt pity for Ryuubei, too, bc they showed him to be a complex man from the start, and so the reveal of his descent into crazed obsession was more believable. Had Saeko lived, she would have needed to go to prison at the least, but I was pretty sure early on she wasn’t going to make it anyway. Ryuubei there was no way he’d be taken alive.
Slapping the ‘had a bad childhood/demanding parents’ card on someone does not automatically make them sympathetic. W/ Kuroto, Masamune was like, a scale up from his insanity, so it made sense that he had attributed to causing Kuroto. What we now know of Gai’s past does not justify… This.
Like, let’s take a look at Gentoku. Despite the fact that they established at the start, about the light effecting people’s minds, Gentoku goes through a massive knocking down a peg, multiple pegs, for his crimes. He’s in the same situation as Fuwa and Yua under Nanba, w/ the added edge of him having convinced himself the only way he can make up for what he did is try to do what he can to fulfil his father’s dream of reuniting the country. He kills Akaba, but refuses to kill noncombatants. Then, when he realises that Nanba intends to kill his father, he goes and throws himself on the heroes’ mercy and literally begs them for help, and they agree bc they want to save his father, too—but, in the end, his father dies in his arms. But even after all this, Gentoku still doesn’t forgive himself. He’s the one regularly bringing up his crimes regularly. When Ryuuga goes to him looking for help, he looks him right in the eye and literally says ‘I killed your girlfriend.’ When Katsuragi throws a fit at him, he just accepts it, acknowledges everything. Doesn’t try to make excuses, even though he knows he has the ‘reason’ of the Box fucking up his brain. Even though he’s also suffered massively. He never forgets. Despite the fact that he’s incredibly tragic, he never tries to garner sympathy for himself. He recognised everything he did wrong.
And the two most important things about all of these? One is that there were early hints about there being more to the characters than just being cruel or doing terrible things (not quite as much w/ Kuroto, but it was kinda there? I don’t have specific examples), there was build up for these developments and reveals. Another was that there was someone trying to do something significantly worse appearing in the running. For Gentoku it was Nanba and then Evolt’s plans, for Kuroto is was Parad and then Masamune, for Saeko it became the Foundation X dude.
Gai has never shown any signs of remorse or a more human side. I would also hesitate to call the Ark ‘worse’ than him, she’s just better at what she’s doing. They both use their ‘underlings’ as tools, resort to mind control, cruelty, and abuse. The Ark wants to wipe out humans, while Gai wants to wipe out HumaGear. They could have made it work w/ the Ark overpowering him and Gai crawling back in and being forced to beg for help, or choose between helping stop the Ark proper and giving everything up or something worse. Do what they did w/ Kuroto, imprison him, but keep him as a resource. This just feels like ‘oh, crap, better pin a sob story on the human villain bc we need to make the satellite he drove homicidal and then the HumaGear that she, as a result of learning from Gai, put forcibly under mind control for more than a decade, stripped of all chances at possibly reaching singularity, all awareness of free will from seem ‘worse’!’
It just feels forced. There’s no other way around it.

Lost Summer Deep Dive - Christie Monteiro Part 1
Tumblr media
An In-Depth Look At A Capoeirista Forgotten By Lore
by Nay Holland
When one thinks of capoeira, it is impossible to mention the impact video games had in bringing the art into the public eye. Sure, there have been movies, books, and capoeira schools for as long as the art existed, but video games were arguably the form of media which made the art popular. The same could be said for its representation in video games.
While you had capoeiristas like Richard Meyer and Bob Wilson in the Fatal Fury series, it wouldn’t be until years later that a rich Brazilian capoeirista known as Eddy Gordo would set the bar. No, he wouldn’t just set the bar, he would be the bar himself.
Tumblr media
In arcades during the year of 1997 and home consoles the following year, many a player felt rage from a single man. A man whose flips, spins, handstands, and kicks, would bring awe to those who played him, and frustration to those who fought against it. He was both famous for moves never seen before in a 3D fighter, and infamous for being the definition of “cheap.”
Regardless how you felt about him, there was no denying that Eddy was different from the rest of the cast. In a game where homages to Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Tiger Mask were evident, there was nothing who was comparable to Eddy at the time. His unique, yet slightly exaggerated, homage to capoeira brought new fans into the art. Capoeira became a popular buzz word for fighting enthusiasts almost overnight.
But was Eddy always considered to be the face of capoeira?
Tumblr media
After Tekken Tag Tournament, Eddy was noticeably absent from the main roster. In place of him was a young Brazilian woman by the name of Christie Monteiro. A fresh face for a game that represented a new era in Tekken, her moves were very similar to Eddy’s.
In fact, apart from her normal throws, her movelist were identical to Eddy’s in every way. Eddy being a palette swap for her in Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 brought the “Christie is Eddy” angle to its head. At the time, although Eddy was included in these two games, Bandai Namco was trying to push Christie as the new face.
At the very least, they were trying to push a woman as the capoeira representative from the very beginning.
In a 1998 CVG interview, following the release of Tekken 3, the development team discussed how the concept of Eddy came about. When asked how the team went about designing its roster of characters, the team replied with the following.
“A good example is Eddy, since he wasn't planned to be the character you see at first. The development team wanted to include a character who used Capoeira, so the idea was passed on to the artist team. Mr Kimoto requested the artist to make a female character for Capoeira. However the artist said it was too difficult to design a female character who used Capoeria, so there came Eddy.”
It wouldn’t be until Dark Resurrection that Eddy had his own slot on the roster for the first time since Tekken Tag Tournament.
Tumblr media
With the separation of the two characters at last, Christie’s push would be put on the backburner in lieu of Eddy’s importance to the story. Christie’s relevance came to a screeching halt in Tekken 7 as Eddy was one of the final main roster characters revealed without a Brazilian woman in sight.
Tumblr media
NO!!!
Anyways, Christie wouldn’t make another official appearance until the mobile Tekken game, but considering the mobile Tekken game is literally a dump of old characters that didn’t make the cut in Tekken 7, that’s hardly a victory.
Tumblr media
I started writing this back in early 2018, and since then, we’ve gotten Marduk back from the graveyard!
Tumblr media
However, I’ve long since stopped holding out for hope. If she shows up, she shows up. If she doesn’t, well. It still won’t dilute the amount of love I have for this girl. Hopefully by the end of this I can shed some light on what makes Christie amazing to me.
So, what happened? How did the one who was pushed to be the babyface of capoeira after Eddy’s origin ended up becoming the queen of the indies known as mobile Tekken? What is it about Christie that makes me admire her as a character? Well, let’s start with her design.
Appearance
So, imagine the year 2001. You’re in the arcades and you see Tekken 4 for the first time. The attract video plays and you’re in wow at the graphics. Especially considering this is the first Tekken on a new engine in the arcade at least. Then suddenly you see this mami twirling and making sensual poses, flashing the biggest grin.
Tumblr media
It was at this point you dumped quarters in the machine. Don’t lie. This totally didn’t happen to me at an arcade while I was in the Poconos. Nope.
I remember the rumors at the time. Everyone thought the designers took inspiration from Tyra Banks and Harada himself de-confirmed this.
Tumblr media
Wearing a low-cut green floral blouse that cuts above her midriff, black leather hotpants with frills at the end, black fingerless gloves, and Spartan-style sandals, Christie’s primary outfit was made to turn heads and accentuate her features. As with most outfits and hair designs in this game, Christie’s design was also made to show off the new graphics engine for Tekken. Christie’s long brunette hair, coupled with her loose-fitting clothing, flows with the wind with every kick and acrobatic motion. Her design was made for comfort in mind as well as ease of movement.
Tumblr media
Christie’s competitor’s outfit is a brassiere-style top with silk training pants and green fingerless gloves. Wrapped around her waist is a capoeira belt, much like Eddy’s competitor’s outfit. Whether this is an actual representation of her rank, or just a design choice, is up in the air. I’d like to say it’s the latter, though I believe a purple belt is a high ranking in capoeira.
Comparing Christie and Eddy’s competitor’s outfit, they aren’t too different from each other. In fact, side by side they appear like partners rather than a radical difference.
Tumblr media
Following her debut, her primary outfit changes from a green to a light purple top and black to white colored hotpants. The top of her competitive gear is more confined and stylish while retaining the same effect as it did before. As the series progressed, her butterfly motif became more prevalent in her clothing.
With such a dynamic taste in style, one would think that her personality is just as bubbly, and you’d be correct to think so.
Personality
Pointing at her opponent with finger guns and firing off in their direction, Christie enters her ginga stance with a declaration…
“Here we go!”
Tumblr media
Oozing with confidence no matter who she is fighting against, Christie never backs down from an opportunity to show off her studies in Capoeira arts.
Christie makes it clear to her competitors that if they take her lightly, they will pay for it in a loss.
Perhaps one of my favorite exchanges with another character is when she fights Bruce in Tekken 5. Bruce exclaims that the “competition has gotten easier on the eyes,” in which Christie taunts him in return. When Bruce questions if her capoeira can stand up to [his Muay Thai], she replies with a sultry tone of confidence.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Christie would win the bout and she toys with him, saying that his lack of rhythm will be the reason why he will never defeat her.
It’s exchanges like this, as well as her other intro pose where she blows her opponent a kiss and declares them to “go easy on her,” that she uses her looks to her advantage. It’s almost as a form of intimidation, being caught off guard by swift kicks coming at you at every direction while she emerges the victor, leaving the battle almost unscathed.
There is a depth to this. When things get serious, Christie has a sense of justice within the confines of her own capability. This is commonly brought up whenever Eddy runs off headfirst into danger.
Tumblr media
In the same game, when she runs into Eddy, she doesn’t back down from fighting Eddy to save her grandfather’s life. Win or lose, she will fight her hardest for those who she loves, even if it means fighting the one person, she loves the most.
She’s also highly emotional as an individual as evident when she shows her disappointment at the end of her winning the 4th Iron Fist Tournament. This changes to a complete 180 as she sees the one person who she has been looking for all tournament, immediately returning to her bubbly cheerful self. A dark version of this trait shows when she is overburdened with emotion to the point of tears upon discovering that her grandfather passed away.
This combination of a flirtatious happy-go-lucky capoeirista who revels in her fights and a woman who is bound to protect those who she holds dear comes into full force in Tekken 6. Although in the overall canon she takes a backseat, controlling her in Scenario mode reveals hidden layers about her character.
One of the hypothetical scenarios that is brought up is when Christie and Eddy do cross paths in Scenario mode. If the former approaches Eddy, he will exclaim that she shouldn’t be here in high concern. If the latter approaches Christie, she will appear angry that he has, once again, decided to be inconsiderate in being brash for considering working with “Public Enemy #1.”
Tumblr media
Both Eddy and Christie wish to protect each other, yet they do so by ironically placing themselves into harms way. While on a larger scale, they are two small fish in the giant ocean that is the Mishima bloodline story. If one zooms in on the microscope, you see two troubled young adults who wish to live in peace. One is bound by vengeance while the other is bound by duty.
Story
Tumblr media
While Tekken 4 is the first time we see and hear of Christie, that game is not the first time we hear of her story. In Tekken 3’s prologue, Eddy was incarcerated after being framed for the murder of his father. During his sentence, he learns the art of capoeira from an elderly master. Up until his release, Eddy perfected the art of capoeira and entered the third King of Iron Fist tournament to exact
That elderly man was none other than…
Well…
The old man never had an official name. The Tekken wiki has his name as
DENSETSU NO KAPOEIRA MASUTAA
Tumblr media
or the “Legendary Capoeira Master.”
For a while, the urban legend regarding his name was “Ho Chi Myong,” but unlike the Tara Banks inspiration, this wasn’t ever confirmed by Bandai Namco. I don’t think it ever will.
The one thing that was confirmed, however, was that the
DENSETSU NO KAPOEI---I’m sorry.
The elderly capoeira master was Christie’s grandfather. How did Christie herself know capoeira? Through Eddy, as a form of mutual respect for her grandfather teaching him the art. Suddenly Christie and Eddy having identical moves isn’t farfetched.
However, I always wondered why Christie’s grandfather never taught her capoeira himself? The obvious answer would be because he, too, was imprisoned. Still, you’d consider that maybe he would have taught her when she was a child or began to teach her. Who knows?
Tumblr media
At the end of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3, Eddy finds out that it was Kazuya Mishima who orchestrated the events which led to his father’s murder and his own imprisonment. Since then, he has sought out to find Kazuya and settle the score on his own terms.
Enter Tekken 4, where a concerned Christie realizes Eddy has gone missing. In her response, she spends the 4th Iron Fist Tournament looking for Eddy, sensing trouble brewing on the horizon.
Tumblr media
Honestly this was Eddy’s fault to begin with. Had Eddy not told Christie that he was going to avenge his father’s death, she wouldn’t have bothered to put herself in harm’s way. However, Christie’s story had to start somewhere yeah?
In the end, Eddy doesn’t find Kazuya, but, if we take Christie’s ending in Tekken 4 as canon, we can deduce some details.
Christie wins the iron fist tournament, incredibly bemused, as she failed at her original goal in locating Eddy. However, seeing a familiar face in the crowd, she runs over to Eddy in a full embrace. Eddy appears in this ending with a cast on his arm, so it is assumed that his progress in finding his father’s murderer ended prematurely. Even so, despite his lack of success, he still shows up to his girl’s victory match in support. What a romantic.
Tumblr media
Several months later, tragedy strikes. Christie’s grandfather is inflicted with an illness and the race to find enough money to pay for the operation begins. In the end, no matter who wins the tournament, they use their prize money to pay for the operation which turns out to be a success. Christie, Eddy, and her grandfather are all seen at a park practicing capoeira and everyone lives happily ever after, right!?
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, not.
Several years later and the climate is different. Jin Kazama wages war against the world and it turns out that neither Christie nor Eddy was able to win the tournament after all.
Running out of time and resources, Jin makes a deal with Eddy. If Eddy works for him and helps exact Jin’s vengeance against Kazuya, then Jin will help pay for the operation. Considering this as an opportunity to become in direct contact with Kazuya, the murderer of his father, it’s a win win for Eddy.
Tumblr media
He didn’t want to be a part of this war, but for the safety of the one person who was a father figure for him and the chance to kill the one who has caused him years of torment, he will take up a gun for Jin.
So, where does this leave Christie? Back to where we once were in Tekken 4, on the lookout for Eddy and her grandfather.
Tumblr media
Do you see where I’m getting at now? “As the series progressed, Christie’s role became diluted?”
The sad part is that Christie is not the only character to suffer through this “character dilution.” The4thSnake’s video on Asuka Kazama goes over the same points that I could ever make, so please give that video a watch when you can. In Tekken 6, if it wasn’t Mishima related, it was on the backburner.
youtube
Once again, both parties are unsuccessful. Christie never finds a cure for her grandfather’s illness and he succumbs. Eddy is deceived by Jin, refusing to hold his end of the bargain, and is unable to save his master’s life. While visiting his grandfather’s grave, Christie discovers Eddy.
Tumblr media
Instead of a warming reunion, Christie, in a fit of rage and sadness, slaps him while demanding where he was. In response, Eddy stands there, motionless, as he throws his Mishima Zaibatsu pin to the ground.
This is where Christie’s story ends. Officially.
What began as a bright young capoeira student ended a grieving shell of a person, thanks to the dishonesty of Mishimas and Eddy for pulling a Knuckles and believing Eggman---Jin Kazama.
If we look at the Tag 2 endings and assume, they take place after 6, Eddy takes a page out of King’s book and opens up a capoeira school for orphaned children. After some time passes, he embarks on a trip to become the world greatest stuntman the Mishima Zaibatsu has ever seen!
Tumblr media
No of course not he’s going to confront his father and master’s murderers of course! What else would Eddy POSSIBLY do at this point!?
In Christie’s ending, as a continuation, she catches wind of this and chases Eddy, but, as history tends to repeat itself, she’s too late. Eddy is already on the train.
Tumblr media
Some. Things. Never. Change.
At least she was spared a grim fate, unlike our friend here.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
So. Where do we go from here? From the beginning, we know that Eddy is an integral part of Christie’s story. However, there are signs in her design that shows she can hold her own, both in a fight and in her sense of justice.
I recommend anyone to play through Scenario mode with all of the available roster and not just Lars, but in Scenario mode, Christie has a sense of justice that almost felt refreshing. It wasn’t just simply “where’s Eddy,” but it was also “I have to stop the messed up things from going on in the world”
Earlier I posted a photo where she confronts Eddy for working with the Mishimas and she has no qualms in defeating him to knock sense into him. I also mentioned the confrontation between Bruce and Christie, which is just about non-canon as far as Tekken 6 is confirmed. They treat their encounter as if it was the first time they’ve ever met. Bummer.
But there are signs of life for this character and when it shows, it’s refreshing to see. Christie is not the only character who suffers from this, but she is the one who is marred by the reputation of “always being in Eddy’s shadow.”
When discussion is brought up on why she shouldn’t be in the game? “Eddy is already in there.”
When the game throws her into a repeat storyline for the third straight game in the series? “Eddy is already there.”
Why is Christie out and about? “Her grandfather, but Eddy is there as well.”
Part of the reason why I considered myself a Christie main is because Christie is an underdog in the Tekken universe as well as within the competitive scene.
The irony here is that Christie was meant to replace Eddy, but the inverse happened.
One day, Christie can exist without having to worry about being in Eddy’s shadow. A fan can dream. Until then, I’ll always consider her my favorite fighting game character so there’s no replacing that at least.
There will be a Part 2 to this as there’s one key game that she’s a part of where she does regain some of that luster I wish she had in the main series. A game that is largely underrated but a game where Christie has had her moment in the sun.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for Part 2 soon! If you weren’t sick of me talking about Christie and made it this far, congrats! Stick around for the follow-up!
