Josef Fritzl, ‘El Monstruo de Amstetten’

¿Cómo es posible que durante veinticuatro años nadie se percatase de lo que ocurría bajo los cimientos de la casa de Josef Fritzl en la pequeña localidad austríaca de Amstetten? Ni su propia mujer, Rosemarie, llegó a sospechar jamás que su encantador marido guardaba un secreto: había secuestrado a su propia hija, de la que abusaba sexualmente y con la que había tenido siete hijos. El destino quiso que una de las hijas -en realidad, nieta- del pederasta, Kerstin, de diecinueve años, tuviese que acudir al hospital aquejada de una rara enfermedad.

Durante el reconocimiento médico, los especialistas encontraron en uno de sus bolsillos una nota en la que contaba su historia y pedía ayuda. Los doctores, extrañados, pidieron hablar con su madre, Elisabeth. Entonces explotó la mentira y la verdad salió a la luz. Uno de sus vecinos era un auténtico “monstruo”.

 “El impulso de tener sexo con Elisabeth se hizo cada vez más fuerte. Sabía que Elisabeth no quería que le hiciera eso. Sabía que la estaba hiriendo. Pero, finalmente, el impulso de ser capaz de probar el fruto prohibido fue demasiado fuerte. Era como una adicción"

Amstetten (Austria) fue la ciudad que vio nacer, crecer y cometer las más macabras aberraciones a Josef Fritzl. Desde el 9 de abril de 1935 esta pequeña población fue testigo de cómo su infancia se convertía en un infierno. Según su propio testimonio, Fritzl -abandonado por su padre cuando tenía cuatro años- sufría toda clase de maltratos y abusos físicos por parte de su madre, a quien en su vejez también llegó a encerrar a modo de venganza. Aquel martirio infantil, provocado en parte por ser el único vástago de la familia, llevó a ambos a construir una relación tormentosa de amor y odio.

Gracias a algunos de los informes psiquiátricos elaborados para el juicio, supimos que Fritzl temía a su madre más que a nada en el mundo. Los continuos insultos que ésta le profería -“Satán, inútil y criminal”- y las absurdas prohibiciones a las que lo sometía -no podía practicar deporte ni tener amigos, por ejemplo- llevaron al joven Josef a desarrollar una personalidad fría y violenta bajo una apariencia tranquila y serena. De hecho, acudió al colegio y fue un buen alumno.

Desde 1977 las palizas y violaciones fueron la rutina de Elisabeth, hasta que dicha rutina cambió con su encierro. Los dos primeros días la mantuvo esposada y hasta los nueve meses siguientes, la retuvo atada para evitar que se escapase. No contento con esto, la recluyó en una sola estancia durante nueve años -después construyó más habitaciones en el sótano- y allí la violaba de forma sistemática.

De los múltiples encuentros sexuales, Elisabeth dio a luz a siete hijos que fueron testigos de aquellas aberraciones. Tres de ellos -Kerstin, de diecinueve años, Stephen, de dieciocho, y Felix, de cinco- permanecieron junto a su madre bajo tierra; tres más -Lisa, de quince años, Monika, de catorce, y Alexander, de trece- vivían junto a Josef y su esposa en la casa; el séptimo murió al tercer día de vida y fue incinerado.

El espacio tenía 80 metros cuadrados, con una altura máxima de 170 centímetros, y se extendía por todo el jardín. Para acceder a él, colocó una puerta corredera de hormigón de 300 kilos escondida detrás de una estantería. Era franqueable mediante un código que sólo Fritzl conocía. El recinto constaba de una entrada, dos dormitorios de 3 metros cuadrados, una pequeña cocina, un baño y un lavadero. La única fuente de ventilación provenía de un tubo.

Mientras tanto, Elisabeth (52 años) y sus seis hijos-hermanos (ahora de entre 15 y 29 años) han cambiado de apellido y viven alejados de Amstetten bajo fuertes medidas de seguridad. Siguen bajo tratamiento psicológico intentando adaptarse a la sociedad. Aquel “martirio inimaginable”, afortunadamente, llegó a su fin.

In 1984, Josef Fritzl from Austria lured his daughter Elisabeth, 18, into the basement and kept her there to constantly abuse and rape. He told his wife Rosemarie and his children that Elisabeth ran away to join a cult. During confinement she had seven children, one died, three lived upstairs and three remained downstairs with her.

In 2008, her oldest daughter, Kerstin, 19, fell ill from kidney failure and she begged Fritzl to take her to the hospital. Staff were instantly suspicious, and when Fritzl permitted Elisabeth and her two sons to visit Kerstin; the police were alerted and Elisabeth exposed her father’s crimes.

Rosemarie alleged she knew nothing about his crimes which is hard to believe, she would have been suspicious of his actions and knew he spent a large amount of time in the basement. She never questioned or investigated why three of her daughter's children turned up on their doorstep.

Fritzl showed no remorse for his crimes and was found guilty in 2008 and got life imprisonment (he is eligible for parole next year in 2025). In prison, he has had his teeth knocked out.

Elisabeth initially was living with her mother and children in a villa, however, there was tension and resentment between mother and daughter and Elisabeth threw her mother out of their home. Today, they are on speaking terms.

Fritzl was a retired engineer who had a history of violence. In 1967, he broke into a woman’s home, threatened her life and held a knife to her and then raped her. He was convicted and imprisoned. Rosemarie knew of this crime and stood by him and told outsiders that he was away on a holiday. He started sexually assaulting his daughter Elisabeth when she was 11, Elisabeth grew up rebellious which Fritzl didn’t like, and made the decision to force her away from the outside world.
