Carmine and Kieran Roleswap AU: Teal Mask Edition

Sweet Arceus do I have a long AU for ya, because I am Very Normal about the Kitakami siblings and definitely don't go out of my way to find new ways to mess with their heads. Long AU summary under the cut! Beware all ye who enter here, for there are Ogres afoot.

So the most important thing to understand before we start is that Carmine and Kieran still retain aspects of their normal personalities.  A 1:1 swap would be kinda boring (specifically, boring for me). However, their life experiences have changed here and that does give us some new juicy tidbits to explore.

Kieran is the older sibling in this scenario.  He's still shorter than his sister, but he's now older than the player character and probably has some devilish good looks.  He's generally goodnatured, and being the older sibling and having to look out for a younger sister has balanced his personality a little bit.  He's more mentally stable and mature than his standard self.  He still has a pretty huge fondness for the ogre in the old legend, admiring its independence and strength.  The major change to his personality here is that he's not as insanely shy, since he hasn't had a big scary savage sister to hide behind all his life.

Younger sister Carmine is shy of strangers and still wary of outsiders.  Her posture visually in the Teal Mask is probably kind of stooped, like she's trying to hide how crazy tall she is.  She has a bratty, slightly spoiled attitude in this scenario, because big brother Kieran is always hovering nearby to keep her out of trouble.  She appears to be the player character's age or maybe a touch younger.  Despite the initial shyness though, she's all aggression when she feels she or her family or really any of Kitakami as she sees it is threatened.  She still dismisses Kieran's ogre obsession, but chalks it up to boys liking scary things.  (You know, cuz girls never go for that kinda thing </massive sarcasm>)

The PC would meet them both for the first time in Mossui and Kieran is welcoming while Carmine glowers at you from somewhere behind him.  Kieran's all about helping your classmate get safely to the community center and probably runs off to help, or perhaps to get the caretaker.  Maybe you battle Carmine then because she's definitely not enjoying having these tourists in her fucking town.  Whatever the scenario, Kieran and the caretaker get the rest of the Random Paldean Students safely to the community center and you get settled in.

Now, for a while, things don't change much in this scenario, except for Kieran not being super emotionally unstable.  The next day, you're being introduced to the Blueberry kids properly and Kieran immediately suggests you and he pair up.  Carmine isn't thrilled but as he points out, it's not like they can pair up together based on Briar's directions to make interschool pairs.  She sulks off to find a Paldean student to deal with.  Your character and Kieran have a friendly battle and he admires your skills.  You go find the first two signboards and follow him up to the Dreaded Den more or less the same way as in Teal Mask.  Then he invites you to the Festival of Masks and you go back to the family home.  Carmine is not overly pleased to see you still hanging around, but she's unbending a little bit since you and Kieran obviously get on so well.  They only find the two masks in the shed, Kieran tries to offer you his ogre mask, Carmine stops him, you get to the festival and do some balloon popping and maybe even beat Carmine's score.

It's Ogerpon's appearance that changes the story dramatically.  At first, you are the only one that sees her, but then Kieran comes looking for you after pacifying Carmine.  Ogerpon spooks, drops her mask, and you both have a moment of shock as you realize this is not a child, this is the damn ogre.  Then Ogerpon bolts, leaving you with the Teal Mask.  Kieran is stunned  --  the ogre was so smol!  And seemed so nonaggressive!  And holy shit this mask is beautiful, except there's a chip in the big crystal!  He's excited as hell to have one of his childhood dreams materialize before him.  He wants to go after Ogerpon, but Carmine turns up at that moment.  She has deeply internalized the ancient Kitakami legend of the Loyal Three, and when Kieran excitedly tells her you just saw the ogre, she insists it can't have been, because you and he are both not fucking dead.  She and Kieran argue for a minute, long enough that once it's over, Kieran has to reluctantly admit you'll never catch up to the ogre in the dark.  He tells you to hold onto the mask and you two can go ask his grandpa about it in the morning.  You do, and it's Kieran who is with you when you hear the story of Ogerpon.  Carmine appears at one point and is shooed off by Kieran, but overhears the majority of the story herself.  Unlike Kieran, she can't believe it  --  the heroic Loyal Three, actually villains??  Impossible!  She realizes that if Kieran believes this story, he's likely to go chasing the ogre again, and probably get himself killed, a prospect that chills her to the bone.  She ambushes you both as you leave the family home and demands that Kieran (and just Kieran, she doesn't care what YOU do) not go chasing monsters, making no effort to pretend she didn't overhear the whole damn thing.  Kieran tries to correct her, but she insists you both go have a look at the final signboard, the one that reminds everyone that the ogre murders anyone it comes across without a mask on.  You go, but discuss with Kieran how the story doesn't make any sense compared to the ogre you both saw and the story Kieran's grandpa told you.  You go back mutually determined to get Ogerpon's mask back to her after gramps fixes it. 

You go off to the community center and Kieran goes home.  Something he says at home will alert Carmine to your resolve, and that kicks off the next event.  Carmine demands you meet her at Loyalty Plaza, where she makes an impassioned plea to her brother not to be fooled into getting himself murderated.  He tries to explain that she's still got the wrong impression and she blows up on him, refusing to listen to reason (he almost certainly points out that Gramps has no reason to lie to his own grandkids, for example).  Truth is, she's afraid, afraid for his life, and that's making her act irrationally.

And then a thought occurs to her, a thought that marks a huge turning point in this scenario.  It's you.  You are making her brother act this way.  You are the reason he's doing these insane things.  She accuses you directly of manipulating her family.  Kieran protests, but she's convinced.

Now, in canon, I am convinced that the venom in Kieran's thoughts is what somehow channeled Pecharunt's energy (or some variant thereof) into the Lousy Three's grave and brought them back to life.  In this scenario, imagine the same, only it's the poison of fear which is rapidly spreading through Carmine.  Her fear is being expressed as anger, but it's still fear, and it's consuming her rapidly.  Before either sibling can argue further, the grave splits open, and the Three emerge.  No one knows quite what is happening, so no one can really react effectively as they take off to Kitakami Hall.  It's only as they're already receding into the distance that Carmine realizes they must be the Three.

You and the siblings rush to the Hall to hear the news of the Three's arrival and retrieving of the other masks before going up the mountain.  Kieran starts to rush after them, but suddenly Carmine blocks the way.  She is going to save him from himself if it's the last thing she does.  You battle her and defeat her, and the idea that you are the cause of all this etches itself that much deeper.  She has no choice but to step aside, but you can feel her furious eyes on your back as you run to save Ogerpon.

Poor little ogre is getting the shit kicked out of her and you save her, driving off the Three.  She is nervous around Kieran because he smells like a local and therefore Dangerous, but while a little hurt, he is not crushed by this.  You take her back to the town (she refuses to enter of course) and consult with Kieran's grandpa.  He promises to fix the Teal Mask for Ogerpon if you and Kieran go get a crystal from the Crystal Pool to replace the chipped one, and suggests you and Kieran go pound the shit out of the Three to get Ogerpon's other masks back.  Carmine is sulking at home and overhears the conversation.  You and Kieran go to the Pool with Ogerpon shadowing you, but Carmine blocks your way at the top, angry at Kieran too now for bringing an outsider to this sacred place.  The standoff is broken by Briar also appearing at the summit, distracting Carmine.  Kieran slips past her and you stop her from following with a battle.  Ogerpon stays near you, and her presence only serves to enrage Carmine more.  Kieran retrieves a crystal cluster during the battle and you both bolt back down the mountain to give it to Gramps, leaving Carmine fuming.  He begins to work on the mask and you turn your attention to finding the Three.

You find the Three with Kieran's help and return the shit kicking they gave Ogerpon threefold, retrieving her masks.  Ogerpon becomes more comfortable around Kieran as you go.  You return to the town only to discover Carmine stole the Teal Mask after Gramps fixed it and left Kieran a message telling him to come to the Dreaded Den.  Gramps notes that she spoke with him about the story of Ogerpon before she left and seems to be disturbed by how the ogre has acted since the whole mess began  --  Kieran guesses her good sense is starting to win out over her fear.  You go back to the Den with Kieran and Ogerpon and find Carmine there.  Kieran confronts her, finally convincing her that the story of the Loyal Three was indeed wrong, and she's been wrong about Ogerpon the whole time (probably aided by Ogerpon with her sweet lil face staring like a sad puppy at her). 

Carmine finally accepts the truth of the matter, and apologizes to him and Ogerpon.

But there's one thing she hasn't let go of.  She hasn't forgiven you.  And Kieran doesn't realize that she's still hung up on that part because, while he's a lot more emotionally stable in this scenario, he's still pretty oblivious to subtle emotional cues from other people.  When Carmine walks away from the Den, it's with a venom-filled look in your direction.  Insert Heart's If Looks Could Kill here.

Inevitably, Ogerpon wants you as her human, because you're the damn hero.  This version of Kieran is disappointed, but not shattered by this.  He's spent a lot of time over the last couple days with you and the little cutie, and he's had time to get used to the idea.  It's Ogerpon's decision where she wants to go, and he lets go of the long cherished dream with regret, but nothing worse.  He does ask to have a battle with you and her in the morning, after which Briar calls to tell you to get your asses to the community center to finish the actual school trip thingy you'd probably forgotten all about.  Kieran also tells you that Carmine has holed up in her room and won't talk to anyone.

You know more or less how this ends, with Briar yoinking the Kitakami sibs back to Unova to prepare for some globetrotting and the antagonistic sibling swearing to get stronger so they can kick your ass.  In this case it's Carmine, and boy does she hate you right now.  In the end, Kieran came to no harm, and Ogerpon was not a monster, but it doesn't really matter, because rationality went out the window for her where you're concerned a while ago.  She's going to get stronger, and she's going to hand you your ass for humiliating her so often, and she's got a great idea for making that happen...

🖇️ THE STORY OF US

synopsis. when minho comes back to kiss after the winter break he’s not only surprised to see kitty back, but also a girl she introduced as her new roommate, who at the same time was a girl minho used to be head over heels for.

all minho wanted after taking a sixteen hour flight from los angeles to seoul was just to take a nap as soon as he get to his dorm, well, meeting his roommates in the meantime, but sleep was all he wanted. definitely not to see kitty song covey, laying in one of the couches talking so rapidly about…

…whatever kitty could talk about. he focused himself on here for less than a second, and his gaze caught something so familiar, yet so unknown. then, when you parted your lips to answer a question asked by q, he connected all the possible dots. you were the girl he was put up in the same room with, when multiple schools were staying at the same hotel. minho seemed like a total douchebag, just like you’d assume a son of a famous actress would act, nevertheless, since the staff couldn’t really do anything particular to change the rooms, he was… a nice guy.

however, while bonding at the trip, you fell out of touch immediately after as you decided to not share each other’s contacts, so you could meet up in future life if your friendship and… quite more, was meant to be. it was his idea, you were eager to stay in touch as you grow on him in those four weeks.

your new roommate smiled at him, probably excited to see him. “i’m back!” she exclaimed melodically, grabbing your arm in between. “i think yuri pulled some strings, and this is my new roommate, she just transfered. we’ll be living in the boys building, we’re neighbours!” she added, too happy to notice the boy’s shock on his face.

“oh, my god.” he started, but covey quickly interrupted him with a roll of eyes and “i don’t care what you’re gonna say. im exhilarated to be back.” though minho was too focused on you to even listen to your american roommate.

“hi, minho.” you spoke so softly, you could see he almost died. without wasting any more time, q has suggested to let you guys talk alone as it was so obvious you two knew each other. he replied in low voice, clearly not believing his own eyes. “so good to see you again.” a smile rosed on your lips, when his arms were wrapped around your posture.

reuniting with him was unexpected as you never thought you’d see him again, and you believed the plan you set was a complete absurd. you tried reaching out, but he was a son of a star, how could you possibly achieve that? now, it just felt like a scene from a movie, where two lovers finds each other after a long time, although you weren’t really lovers – or were you?

that night you barely had any sleep, you sneaked out of your dorms, and he showed you around, while catching up on almost everything. it wasn’t a lie that something between you has stayed the same, the same butterflies in your stomach when your hands accidentaly touched, the same lovestruck looks, the same way you held hands, the only thing that wasn’t as it used to be was your ages and appearance.

you were standing at your doorstep, when he put his phone number into your phone. “thank you so much for tonight, minho.” you stood on your toes. “i think i missed you.” you whispered with a smug, before leaving a soft kiss on his blushed cheek. without letting him respond, you walked into the room.

a part of you really wanted to be true, but the other decided that you’d just make a fool out of yourself, so you just trail back to your room, slight regret appearing in the back of your head.

the next few weeks looked almost the same — the school were so hard you spent it on studying for most of your free time, which caused minho to think you were avoiding him, when in reality you were tutored by yuri and juliana. “minho’s been asking ‘bout you, quite a lot, you know?” han started.

“bugging our asses for half the lunch break.” juliana added, braiding your hair as the soft tunes of frank ocean played from her speaker. “told us you guys almost kissed…?” her eyebrow’s shot up, scanning your face in the mirror for any signs of embarrassment.

“i mean we did kiss a few years ago at the summer camp, but not now.” you shrugged, not hiding the blush that crept on your face. “don’t look so shocked! we were a camp couple, but he wanted to be sappy and said if the universe wants us together, it’ll let us meet each other again.”

“that’s romantic, isn’t it?” kitty rolled on the bed to face you and juliana. “i mean, you really gotta believe you’re soulmates if you risk something so valuable.” she sighed, smiling softly. “you two remind me of my sister and her boyfriend, lara and peter.”

you frowned, thinking about her words for a minute. was it so valuable or did he just want to have a moment of peace? did he even think about you during the few years you’ve been apart? well, you thought about him, but did he about you? it was your first time in a week that you’d see minho, and ever since the day one, he’s been somehow flirting with you, so you were quite nervous.

you never said you liked him out loud, not because you didn’t (maybe ‘cos first love is the one you’ll always remember), but because katherine would decide to use her matchamaking skills on you. you wanted it to come out naturally, just like back then. your relationship with minho was incredibly special to you, it was something no one could take away from you.

now, you were just trying to look decent. you were going out with him and dae, being asked out so suddenly you couldn’t refuse. you were quite sure that dae’s presence there was just to get you out of the room, and then disappear. you wore a white, flowery summer dress that yuri borrowed you a few days ago, your make up was light and the braids looked cute.

“should i be nervous?” you asked, fixing a few things on your face, before the clock has been the closest to the final minute. a knock on the door was heard from the beginning of hallway. “yeah, it shows you actually care.” yuri’s girlfriend smiled at you as you flattened the fabric of your dress.

minho was breathless, last time he’d seen you in a dress was back at camp, during the last day when you just wanted the boy to remember you as well as he could. “uh, hey.” he uttered, eyes you in shock. “you look, woah, gorgeous.”

just as you expected, dae, who showed up late, didn’t stay with you for longer than ten minutes, saying he needed to see kitty, with whom you were earlier, so it was just the two of you. minho offered you an airpod as you walked down the street to the park, his fingers wrapped around the handle. it was the first time you had been alone with him in weeks, as someone was always near, whether it was q and florian, dae and kitty, juliana and yuri or everyone separately.

“i wanted to find you sometimes, y’know?” you began, leaning onto his arms, when you finally sat down. “what? then why didn’t you? i really hoped you’d do it.” his head fell delicately on your, fingers intertwining themselves with yours.

“well, your mom’s a famous actress, i wouldn’t even be able to text you so… i just followed you on insta.” you shrugged softly, not wanting him to change his position. “and it was your idea to come up with something like this, losing you broke me in half, really. my parents even reached out to your mom.” his face lightened up with shock and confusion, nevertheless he let you continue.

“but her manager or whoever said that hundreds of people call just to say their daughters are your friends, so… i guess the call wasn’t forwarded?” minho groaned, annoyed. he’d give up everything to just have you by his side, when his mom and dad were splitting up.

“i am so sorry y/n.” a sigh left his lips. “i’ll regret that stupid decision till the end of my days, really.” he’d talk and talk, and talk if you didn’t do what you did.

when the soft tunes of lana del rey’s song was replaced by the starting notes of “there is a light that never goes out” by the smiths, you turned around to face him, and after putting your hands on his cheeks you kissed him. his lips moved so godly against yours, you almost melted into his touch. with that, your friendly hangout turned into a date — not that you didn’t think of it earlier, but now it was confirmed. it was a definite date.

when you came back, the living space was empty so… considering you had half an hour before curfew, you decided to snog a little more, while watching a movie. his arm around your waist, your head on his shoulder, a bowl of snacks resting on his thigh. beside that, you didn’t even think about kitty, and what her reaction might be if she came back. now it was just you, minho and your rosing relationship.

So Kieran and Carmine’s classes being 1-4 and 3-2 confirm theyre first and third year’s respectively. Which is fine.

Until you realize that Lacey being a second year also confirms the player’s year as well, since we share classes with her at BB Academy, meaning the player is a second year.

Kieran, as a 1st year, is 14-15. The player, as a 2nd year, is 15-16. Lacey, as a 2nd year, is 15-16. Carmine, as a 3rd year, is 16-17.

Furthermore, Drayton and Carmine share classes, which means he’s also a third year. He also failed three times and is repeating his third year for the fourth time. That means he’s 20-21.

We also know Crispin is in the same year as Lacey and Amarys is allegedly the same year as Carmine, so 15-16 and 16-17 respectively.

So, to recap:

Kieran: 14-15

Florian/Julina: 15-16

Carmine: 16-17

Lacey: 15-16

Drayton: 20-21

Crispin: 15-16

Amarys: 16-17

Then you realize that allows us to calculate nearly every character’s ages in the entirety of Scarlet and Violet.

Nemona and Arven are older than the player and Carmine but haven’t graduated yet, meaning they’re over 17, implying around 17-18, aka 4th years.

Penny is a second year as the had to take a year off the school and is back to resume her curriculum in the normal pattern, meaning she’s 15-16, just like Florian/Juliana.

Along with that, we have Ortega who says he’s better the player by “a year”, which means he’s older than Florian/Juliana by one year, placing him at 16-17. However, he states he’s a second year, placing him at exactly 16 unless he was held back once and is in fact 17, which isn’t stated. That means he’s 16.

I’m not sure on information for the others, but there’s no dialogue or information as of yet for the other Team Star members and other important characters.

So, until then, these are the ages for every SV character that we have been able to calculate:

Kieran: 14-15

Florian/Juliana: 15-16

Carmine: 16-17

Lacey: 15-16

Drayton: 20-21

Crispin: 15-16

Amarys: 16-17

Nemona: 17-18

Arven: 17-18

Penny: 15-16

now that kieran's champ look dropped, i could finally draw their mjverse designs for indigo disk. there's a 1 year timeskip between the 2 dlcs in my canon so i wanted to make them look a lil different to show that passage of time, ( carmine's not here bc i don't really see her look changing much. )

some info about what juliana and florian were up to during that 1 year gap under the cut! ⤵

JULIANA : after attaining her champion title and helping solve the team star situation, juliana's skills as a battler have become pretty well known around paldea. this new status initially ostracized her a bit from her peers, much like what nemona experienced, but she was able to show others that she was still just as approachable as she was before by tutoring some fellow students that wished to improve their battling skills. she's also realized that she really loves teaching others and is pretty damn good at it, too.

besides battling, juliana has also found a love of art thanks to hassel's art class. if you couldn't find her at the academy's battlefield, she'd most likely be working on a new piece in the art room. as a result, a lot of her clothes have speckled with paint ( like her favorite sneakers. ) seeing her passion for art and hoping to help her hone her skills, hassel took up the position as her mentor and is a great source of encouragement and support for her. juliana has also started dating penny soon after the end of post-game story.

FLORIAN : after getting back to mezagoza from his trip to kitakami, florian was a bit of an emotional wreak ( to say the least. ) he spent well over a month languishing over what happened with kieran, most of it spent moping around juliana and his shared dorm room while listening to heartbreak playlists. the rest was spent coming to the realization that his skills as a battler were still severely lacking. his last battle with kieran was an extremely close call, he only barely won with the skills he had gained during his journey through paldea. with how things were, there was no way he could fufill the duties of a pokémon professor if he couldn't effectively protect the pokémon entrusted to him, let alone himself or others he cares about. he couldn't keep resting on his laurels, he had to work towards improving himself.

so, for the past year, florian's poured himself into improving his battling skills with nemona and his sister's help. while he still isn't on their level, he's become quite the formidable battler. ogrepon, which he's given the nickname "pon-pon," has also become a staple of his team. the rest of his time is dedicated towards studying in the hopes of becoming pasio's next pokémon professor, being the most interested in mythology and terastallization. he still talks to arven frequently after he ( finally ) graduated, along with becoming friends with ortega and atticus. he even dated ortega briefly, but it was very clear that florian was still hung up on kieran so the relationship didn't last long, ( they're still good friends, though. )

when cyrano approaches the cavallari siblings and asks them to come to blueberry academy as exchange students, florian accepts the offer without hesitation. this could be his only chance to reconcile with kieran so there's no way he'd pass it up. juliana is happy to tag along since a school that focuses on battling sounds right up her alley, that and she's still peeved about not getting to go to kitakami. though, she's a little concerned for her brother and what may be waiting for him when they get there.

Clavell: Tell me about your friend group, Florian.

Florian: If I explain all that we’re gonna be here for a while… where do I even start?

Florian: Hm… well… I guess I can go ahead and start with Carmine. She’s tough, smart, hot-headed, hard to read, and scary as heck sometimes. But I think she’s secretly nice.

[Flashback]

Carmine: Tell me who has me for Secret Santa.

Juliana: What? Noooo! That takes all the fun out of it!

Carmine: *glares daggers at her*

Juliana: It’s me. I got you a scarf. It’s blue and ugly. I can return it if you wan—

Carmine, snatches the gift before she can finish: Well now it’s my blue and ugly scarf! Back off!!

[End of flashback]

Florian: Next I guess is Nemona. She’s hyperactive. Not the most brilliant, but she works harder than anyone else. She doesn’t have the best aim or grip on things though.

[Flashback, Nemona unwraps a muffin, then drops it on the ground.]

Nemona: Awww shoot! My muffin!

[As she picks it up, she smacks her head on the table.]

Nemona: Ow! My head! My muffin and my head!

[End of flashback]

Florian: Penny’s probably the most brilliant when it comes to tech and stuff. She was the Leader of Team Star. Gets underestimated because of her looks, so she’s always trying to prove she’s tough.

[Flashback, Penny puts hot sauce on her sandwich. She looks up to see Florian watching her.]

Penny: You think I can’t handle this much hot sauce? I can handle way more than this. *she empties the hot sauce on her sandwich and takes a bite*

Penny, in agony: In... your... face.

Florian: ...I never said anything…

Clavell: What about Arven?

Florian: Arven’s probably like the big brother of our group. And he cooks for all of us. If it weren’t for him we’d probably all eat unhealthy or starve…

[Flashback]

Kieran: *is eating a chocolate bar*

Arven: *quickly snatches it out of his grasp and crushes it*

Kieran, now slightly annoyed: Hey!! I was eating that!!

Meanwhile, Kieran is in his room petting Furret but suddenly pauses: Why do I feel like Florian is out there somewhere… telling my deepest, darkest secret?

Clavell: And Juliana?

Florian: Juliana’s the strongest trainer in our group. Also, she’s the one with the purest heart. Loves music, helping others, saving the world, stopping then forgiving bad guys, and solving puzzles. The only puzzle she hasn’t seemed to solved though... is how to grow up.

[Flashback]

Florian: Stay here while I get more supplies for our up coming trip okay?

Juliana, beaming: Don’t worry, Florian! I’m not going anywhere!

Florian, closing his eyes and sighing: You better. This store is like a maze. So just stick close to me so you don’t get lost okay?

Florian: …

Florian: Okay?

Florian: …

Florian, opening his eyes: …Juliana?

[He sees Juliana rushing off in the distance after a butterfly]

Juliana: Heeeey!! Come back here!!

Florian, watching with an unamused look: I should have known…

A/N: Fun fact: this is saved on my laptop as WITWC - What If They Were Competent? It's ridiculous how incompetent Trystan and MC were in the second book. There was no reason for it to take so long or for Sebastyan to die. An energetic rant with the wonderful @inlocusmads made me wonder... what if they solved it as soon as they could have? Would MC have stayed in Drakovia? This is the result.

Part 1

This is not how Emma expected to end the day.

Trystan is sitting there telling her he doesn’t appreciate her tone, like he’s her father instead of her partner, and he might want that damn throne.

“I’m finished with this conversation,” he adds, his dismissive tone setting alight the flame of her temper.

“Well I’m not.”

She follows him out of the library, Alice on her heels. She needs to get at least one last message across. “Let’s get one thing straight. This isn’t up for debate, I’m going back home this week. With or without you.”

Trystan’s steps falter, but he continues to advance towards his suite. The sharp intake of breath is her first clue that something is wrong.

The unmistakable smell of blood is another.

Emma quickly gets to Trystan’s side and places a hand on his shoulder, an unconscious show of support, even as she takes in the brutality of the scene in front of her.

“Nadja,” he whispers. She’s never heard him sound so lost before. “She’s dead.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“How…?”

“Trystan.” Her training takes over. “This is an active crime scene now. We need to call your parents and Ruby.”

Once they leave the throne room, Trystan takes her hand.

“Emma, wait. I’m sorry for freezing you out earlier. Today has been – and continues to be – overwhelming.”

The apology is appreciated, but they have bigger fish to fry right now. So she tells him it’s already forgotten, even though she knows they will have to revisit the topic soon – and neither of them is likely to appreciate the outcome of that conversation.

He nods, grateful, but doesn’t let go of her hand. “What you said earlier…”

She knows what he wants to ask. But she can’t let herself go down this road. Not yet. “Let’s focus on the case. We can… We can talk about it later.”

After they finish searching Lydea’s room, Emma turns to Trystan.

“One suite down, seven to go. Whose room do we search next?”

“Vasili’s is next door, but murder is hardly his type.”

“Murder is hardly anybody’s type. Until it is.”

“Be that as it may, I have a hard time imagining him as a murderer. Other than Mags, he’s my only sane sibling.”

“Then this should be over quickly.”

They smell the blood before they even make it through the door.

“No,” Trystan breathes. “It can’t be.”

But they both see it. The bloody smears on the floor. The sweater vest stained with blood.

“Vasili?”

“Right. Unless this is an attempt to frame yet another Thorne, I’d say this case is open and shut.”

Vasili looks almost resigned when they step into the throne room and turn to face him. He doesn’t attempt to run or convince them that there’s a mistake or he’s being framed. Instead, he gives Trystan a look of profound disdain.

“This is your fault, you know.” He looks at Emma. “Both of you.”

“Oh? Did we hold a gun to your head and force you to slit a woman’s throat?”

“As good as. You got him off the hook for Juliana’s murder. You got him reinstated as Crown Prince.”

“Wait. Juliana’s murder? How would you…” Trystan’s face slackens in shock. “It was you?”

“No, it was you! If Juliana hadn’t chosen you, none of this would have happened.”

The family has been mostly silent so far, most likely out of sheer shock. But at this, Sebastyan steps forward. He’s looking at Vasili like he’s a stranger. “You killed Juliana? Why?”

Trystan sucks in a breath. “The letter that Noemi read in court. Juli wrote it to you.”

“We’d made all these plans. We’d pass the Act, she’d talk you into abdicating, and then we’d finally be together.  But then… she chose you. She decided she wanted to be with you. Never mind that she knew you would make a terrible king. Never mind that we talked about how your irresponsibility would run Drakovia into the ground. The second she fell in love with you, she forgot all about her principles.”

“That’s quite enough.” Queen Viktoria’s tone leaves a trail of frost behind. She shifts her steely gaze from her stepson to her daughter. “Lydea.”

Lydea’s eyes flash with something that Emma thinks might be pain. But then she sets her jaw. “Prince Vasili Thorne, you’re under arrest for the murders of Nadja Zoric and Countess Juliana Georgescu.”

“Well. That was fun.” Emika’s voice breaks into the stunned silence.

“Emika.” Although his face is a portrait of grief, Maksim turns to Eveline. She stands stock still, her hands pressed to her mouth and her eyes brimming with tears. “Let’s go, my love. You need to rest.”

As though she’s on strings, she lets herself be led out of the room, but Emma knows Eveline won’t be doing any resting. Not tonight, not for a long time.

She looks at the remaining Thornes. The twins are talking animatedly, apparently delighted by this turn of events. Astrid is texting. Sebastyan and Marguerite sit close together, looking devastated. And Trystan… Trystan stands next to her, a storm of sorrow in his eyes.

She takes his hand, making a mental note to check on Marguerite later. “Trystan?”

“Did… did that really just happen?”

“I’m afraid so.” She takes his arm. “Why don’t we go outside?”

“Why? Is outside an alternate universe where my brother isn’t a murderer and didn’t kill two innocent women, one of whom was my late fiancée?”

“No, but outside has the benefit of being devoid of Thornes.”

He gives the tiniest of laughs. There is hardly any humor behind it, but she’ll take it. “It’s annoying how often you’re right.”

There’s something eerily beautiful about the palace gardens at night. Emma isn’t a fanciful person, but she almost expects to see faeries frolicking and witches casting spells. This is a place for magic. The harsh, unforgiving type you might find in a Brothers Grimm fairytale.

“I can’t believe this, Emma.”

“I know.”

“I always thought Vasili was the best of us. The only one I trusted more was Marguerite. But all along, he hated me.”

“Maybe not all along.”

“Long enough. And I never picked up on it.”

“That’s not your fault. He never meant for you to pick up on it.”

He looks out to the gardens, his expression haunted. “Two women are dead because of that hate.”

“No, two women are dead because Vasili is a murderer. He could have talked to you. Instead, he chose to kill two people.” She lays a hand on his arm. “Trystan, I’m sure learning that Vasili and Juliana were together was a shock, but…”

“A shock is a surprise. This falls more along the lines of full-on electrocution.”

The fact that he’s still cracking jokes gives her hope. “But don’t let that ruin the memory of what you and Juliana had. You heard him. She chose you.”

He smiles faintly. “I know, Emma. Don't worry, I’m not having an existential crisis over the fact that Juliana had a life before me.”

“Good.”

She wraps an arm around his waist and tugs him into a hug. Trystan sighs, embracing her in return. “Emma Rose, voluntarily hugging? I’m all aflutter.”

“I hug you all the time.”

“It doesn’t count when I start it.”

“Trystan?”

“Hmm?”

“Be quiet.”

He laughs and holds her closer. “How is it that you make everything better?”

“I’m irresistible?”

“Yes.” He’s no longer laughing. “You are.”

They don’t bring up their earlier fight. They don’t talk about the strong possibility that he will stay in Drakovia, or about her proclamation that she will go back either way. By tacit agreement, they focus on getting through the present moment.

Eventually, however, they have to face the future.

Early the next morning, Emma opens her bedroom door to find Trystan standing outside, a travel mug in his hand.

“I brought you coffee.”

She takes it, bracing herself for what she knows is coming. “Thanks.”

“Can we go for a walk?”

“Sure.”

They walk in silence for several minutes. The palace gardens are as beautiful as they were night before, although far less eerie. She finds herself missing the almost otherworldly beauty. It suited her current mood much better than the Disney-esque quality of daylight.

“I can’t leave,” he says finally. Although it’s not a surprise, Emma’s heart still squeezes in pain. “What Vasili said…”

“Nadja’s murder wasn’t your fault. Neither was Juliana’s.”

“Maybe not, but… he was right about me, Emma. What he and Juliana talked about… I would have made a terrible king. I spent the first twenty-two years of my life dumping my responsibilities on everybody around me. Lydea, Vasili… even Bas, and he was only a teenager when I was exiled.”

“You were barely more than a kid.”

“I’m not a kid anymore. I abandoned my responsibilities to Drakovia once before. To do so again would mean…”

“What?”

He shakes his head. “I have to stay.”

“I understand.” And she does. Even as part of her hurts so badly she’s vaguely surprised she’s still standing, she smiles at him. “You’ll make an amazing leader.”

Trystan takes an unsteady breath. “Would you… Would you consider staying?”

“I can’t.” She looks down at her mug, at her boots, at the grass beneath them. Anything to avoid looking at him. “My life is in New York.”

“You could have a life here.” He cups her jaw. “I promise to make it as good as I possibly can.”

“Trystan, you can’t be my whole entire life. What would I even do here?”

“You could open your own agency! You saved a beloved Drakovian princess from a serial killer and put a prince away for two murders. Clients would be clamoring for your services.” His eyes soften. “And we could be together, you and me.”

“Yeah, like your dad and Eveline are together. That would never be enough for me.”

“Emma, I would never…”

“Trystan. What are the odds that your parents – or Drakovia in general – would accept an American private detective as your partner?” When his face falls, she nods. “That’s what I thought.”

She isn’t sure who moves first, but before she knows it, they’re tangled together. The kiss is so desperate she doesn’t know how they’ll break apart, not that she particularly cares. Trystan’s arms hold her tightly enough that she would worry about bruises if she had the bandwidth to think about anything at all, and she sinks her fingers into his hair, trying to commit the feel of it to memory.

After today, that’s all they’ll ever be. A memory.

He insists on taking her to the airport. Luke and Ruby are staying a few more days, but she made an excuse about needing to help out Uncle Tommy at the bar. The longer she stays with Trystan, the harder it will be to leave him behind.

He lingers on the goodbye hug. Emma clings to him, every bit as reluctant to part as he obviously is. But eventually, she breaks the hug and steps back.

“Well, Your Highness. It’s been an experience.”

Trystan smiles back. She wonders if her own smile looks as forced. “Detective. That it has.”

She searches through her carry-on for her boarding pass, steps into the boarding gate.

She doesn’t look back.

Have you ever scrapped ideas for Sweet & Sour?

Yep!

My process has luckily been more of "transform an idea that doesn't fit" situation for most things, but I'm happy to talk about some of the things that didn't make the cut. Whipping out the notes page...

Lacey was actually meant to be the spotlighted E4 member that gets close to Juliana, not Drayton (hence the focus on her in Chapter 1 & 2). She was actually my favorite at first, and I envisioned her as being a positive, grounding guide for Juliana, and also somewhat of a middle ground influence for Kieran. But then I wrote my spin on the cafeteria scene, and I was like "oh my god wait, Drayton's character is so enticing and flexible, and he's especially fun to insert as an influence in the Kieran/Juliana dynamic". SOOOOOO I quickly decided to pivot and make him the spotlighted one, and have him do more of this brotherly figurer role who was very cunning and comedic. Before I even realized I got overtaken by the iconicism, and now he's just part of my brand in general. Whoops. The "Drayton Being Iconic" tag existed on this blog before this happened so I honestly should've seen it coming LMAO. I do have very important plans for the rest of the E4 and what role they're playing, though :

Don't laugh at this one - it was also early development LOL. I was going to have a party scene where Drayton convinces Juliana to pretend she got drunk (I know) as part of a roundabout and wild way to find evidence that Kieran had a soft spot for her (I KNOW). Kieran was essentially gonna waltz in (to a social event he otherwise never would make an appearance in) and he'd get all flustered as Juliana latches onto him. He would've decided to sweep her away from the party and take him back to his dorm. I ended up scrapping this entirely because while teens do party and all that...yeah, and also we pretty much got the dynamic moments I wanted to portray much better through the chapters where Juliana got sick.

Kieran/Juliana dynamic was also gonna have a moment where Kieran gets it in his head to start flirting with Juliana because he thinks that she’s flirting to get him to put his guard down. And that's where they both kinda were gonna secretly realize their feelings LOL. In hindsight lowkey fire still, but yeah, kinda just didn't have the space for it. We do have flirty Kieran era though, and that's still based.

This one is kinda known already, but originally the Applins were the only stars of the show (hence the name of the fic). I added Ribombee in early on after enough people wanted it and gave it lore/a connection to Kieran and his mother. Before Ribombee was conceptualized, I had different plans for what happened to Kieran's parents (he would still be an orphan regardless).

Briar was originally going to make a "deal" with Clavell regarding getting Juliana to come to Blueberry early, although it wouldn't be revealed until Juliana discovers this later. I scrapped this in favor of something much better because I didn't like the implications it had on Clavell's character, and honestly, only Blueberry is supposed to have the sketchy admin/systematic stuff going on anyways lol.

Kieran was meant to show more obvious signs of sleep deprivation (e.g. falling suspect to illness more frequently, slowed reactions). This idea is still good and realistic, but yeah, ended up leaning more into other symptomology that went well with the toxic chain curse (e.g. irritability, obsessive fixations, self-criticism, overworking himself, fatigue, etc.)

Ribombee was going to sleep powder both Kieran & Juliana in the cave scene of Ch 5. I decided to make it a bit more organic by having Kieran up and reflecting on everything + having Ribombee appearance in a more mystical way. Plus, I thought it would mean more if Kieran & Juliana opted to cuddle up themselves rather than being knocked out. There was a part of me that was worried the dynamic was progressing too fast this way with this change, but it seemed to have landed well! :)

This doesn't really count as a scrapped idea, but related: I 1000% retconned something with the Drayton POV chapters (if ykyk, LOL). But YEP. It's CANON. And frankly it's a decision I personally love that has implications, but also won't screw up the storytelling for where we're at now, either.

There's actually a lot more, too, but like I said: most of my ideas tend to upgrade. And lolololol OMG this is especially true for some major lore stuff. I just don't want to reveal it because I don't want to give y'all hints on where we're going!! LOL.

And also...there are cuter moments I haven't used in S&S and probably won't be able to because I account for what makes sense with the given dynamic. BUT what I do end up doing is taking those unused ideas and putting them into What-Ifs or other stories. There's one I'm particularly thinking of that I was dying to put in S&S D, but I don't think it would trip up the current Kieran as much as it would've in earlier chapters, lol. SO. It's going in The Dichotomy in Our Hearts instead! xD

Quick note the kid plays Young Leia in a Star Wars show so...

1. We know how Hollywood tears kids apart so Brandon needs to be fucking extra careful

2. She works for Disney. Now while she's not on the Disney channel the only known actress to come out of that unscathed is Zendaya but Disney is EXTREMELY controlling of young stars so Brandon may have ruined her employment chances there.

3. This photo doesn't just ruin her future employment with Disney but other places since most of the time kid actors get most of their jobs with shows aimed at kids or families. Having her make art or promote an adult show or be associated with a creator/actor with exclusivy adult content might make some companies be less likely to hire unless she has done a bunch of acting already since they don't want that stuff to mix with their family friendly shit.

4. This also reminds me when I was still in the fandom how weirded out I was that they casted child actors for the young versions of Stolas, Blitzo, and Fizz. Like Helluva is animated... You don't need to that especially when the grown up versions are VERY NOT CHILD FRIENDLY. Like get a grown woman to voice the kid versions instead for gods sake.

Don't have much to add as I'll be repeating what you said anon but 100% agree. Looking deeper into this situation is all that you mentioned above, they put this child at risk career wise present and future, her safety (posting her pic on a public platform associated with an adult show/ as you said Hollywood), Brandon were so ignorant and irresponsible doing this, yeah he can't forsee all the repercussions but as an ADULT in the industry he should know and used his discretion. On the child VAs they used... sigh. Leander Lewis who voiced young Stolas is 14/15, Mason Blomberg who voiced young Blitz is 11/12, Juliana Sada is minor who voiced young Octavia. These are children Voice acting in an adult cartoon show. And its not like you can say they're used to doing VA work on adult media, this seems like their 1st time doing such work

And this is the post on Mason's insta announcing it and sighs to the moon, why is a child a VA on an adult show, Viv should NEVER have reached out to them to do va work, "adult cartoon, not suitable for kids" but has kid VAs on it you could've easily gotten an adult to VA your young characters.

Comes back to what I say, Viv and them don't make rational decisions like an adult should. You know your fandom is full of minors, be more active and she can since Viv is more prominent in her fandom than other creators, reprimand fans bullying and harassing minors in fandom and stick by your word and remind minors that this aint a kids show because again Viv is VERY active in her fandom. In conclusion /try to keep minors at all costs away from your adult raunchy shows. Be it them doing VA work, at cons, in fandom ect TRY TO KEEP THEM AWAY.

Friday Munday question

how old do you headcanon the zero crew (Florian/Juliana, Arven, Nemona and Penny) to be? Since I saw your post about Team Star’s ages and it got me wondering about Penny’s other friends

[That's a tricky question. XD I definitely have rough ages in mind for them, but I've mostly thought about Team Star as it's... what this blog/comic is about, haha! I'll try and remember my thoughts!

As I've said before... Florian and Juliana... they are the characters who are the "main" player characters, the ones with the 'raidons who went to Area Zero etc. So they exist, but they're usually off doing their thing and don't have much to do with Giacomo as such at the moment... it's why I mostly haven't addressed them as I wasn't entirely sure if they existed here or not. XD But I guess they would. One of them at very least.

On ages, I'd set them the same as the rest of the Champion kids, 11 years old. That's the base expected age for a base Pokémon game (that isn't Black 2/White 2 or Legends Arceus, or a spin off like Colosseum).

They're probably the peak of bizarre Champion kid vibes because they're so OP. XD

Next, Nemona. She's fairly easy to place for me, I read her as 16 or 17 or so. She's got no baggage as such, she's not connected to Team Star OR the Professors, she's just doing her school education. She's in her final year to be Student Council President... and she's also been there and done that on the whole "becoming Champion" thing... there's no evidence she's been held back years or anything and whilst she doesn't look old, she doesn't look young either... so it feels pretty straightforward, I feel.

For Penny, I think she's older than she looks, even though she is your "underclassman" and "in your year". We know she was sent back to Galar for at least 1.5 years after what happened with Team Star and she's basically had to start again, so she's definitely older than the player character (as is the case, I feel, with ALL of Team Star). Before that, as I said with my explanation for Giacomo's age, there has to have been a bunch of years that passed for the whole bullying and Team Star thing to come to pass... she might not have been at the school as long as Giacomo, but she was definitely there long enough to decide that bullying was a problem she wanted to approach...

I figure, especially since she's a foreign student, she actually came to the Academy as a university or maybe college (6th form, end of high school(?)) level student for further studies in the STEM track. She was likely 16 to 18 when she first attended, but that was years ago at this point. I don't think she's as old as Giacomo, though... I feel he's the oldest of the bunch of Team Star. Surely she was attending when Giacomo was being Student Council President and knows all about that (as do the rest of Team Star's bosses), which was about 3 years prior to this blog/comic (by this comic's lore).

(On a side note, I don't think it was explicitly Nemona that replaced Giacomo as Student Council President... since that would mean she's been president for over 2 years XD They say "some other nerd" or something in the flashback cutscene, that could literally be anybody.)

Going from that, it would make Penny from around 19 to 22 on this blog at least! This might change though, I'll be going through Penny's content in more depth before she turns up for the movie night so... XD; We'll see!

And finally, Arven. This one's a tough one! He's another with history and baggage who hasn't been turning up to his classes and probably got held back multiple years through in-attendance. I think he is also older than you first might assume! He doesn't really have much to do with Team Star, so I haven't thought about him much, but my thoughts are this;

As I said, he's had a tough time with the academy and life in general what with stuff regarding his parents and everything... we know he's been skiving lessons, but I can't remember if they mention how long for... I'm pretty sure somebody like Clavell drops times or something he's known the Professors (but I could be misremembering)... I even went through and tried to rewatch a bunch of Arven cutscenes to better answer this, but I can't find anything like it since I think a lot of fine details like that are in dialogue when you talk to characters, not cutscenes themselves... particularly with people like Clavell ABOUT Arven, not including him... =( If anybody has any screenshots of that sort about how long Clavell's known the professors or any indication how long it's been Arven's been without his parents etc. it would really help! I foolishly didn't take screenshots thinking I wouldn't need them...

In any case, I can't imagine him living on his own before his teen years and doing very well... or it being legal XD; I'm pretty sure I saw a good analysis somewhere that said something about him being 11 or 12 at some point in the story and it's been about 10 years since then? But I can't remember the specifics... I feel like that would be reasonable thinking though, him being around 20/21, especially with him trying to find a cure for Mabosstiff. I wish I had that analysis to hand.

It's awkward, I can't find any time scales in the cutscenes I rewatched as to just how much time has passed since each of these events happened... how long's he been looking for a cure for Mabosstiff? When did he go to Area Zero and get Mabosstiff hurt? Any of that info as a date would help!

Going by his build (wide, has the flat chin like Giacomo), his experiences (skipping school, family life etc.) and his striking facial hair (sideburns, very impressive, Arven), I would also put him at around 21 years old, personally... but unless I can find any kind of indication WHEN these events happened? I can't be sure, which is frustrating! =(

This took all day to compile and I'm a bit iffy about posting it because of the same reasons I mentioned in the previous post about Giacomo... XD; Eh... it's just speculation that applies specifically to this blog. Again, it doesn't invalidate any thoughts you may personally have.

So, I was unsure whether to post this review this quickly, but after some decision making, I decided to write this review. This was also my first time seeing an Insidious movie in theaters but that won’t affect my review as I want to be unbiased and straight to the point, with that being said, let’s get straight to this spoiler free review of “Insidious: The Red Door”.

Insidious: The Red Door is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by Patrick Wilson (who also stars in this movie, and this was his directorial debut), This movie was produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, the movies screenplay was written by Leigh Whannell and Scott Teems, the cast involves Patrick Wilson as Josh Lambert, Rose Byrne as Renai Lambert, Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert, Sinclair Daniel as Chris Winslow, Hiam Ambbass as Professor Armagan, Andrew Astor as Foster Lambert, Juliana Davies as Kali Lambert, Steve Coulter as Carl, Peter Dager as Nick the Dick, Justin Sturgis as Alec Anderson, Joseph Bishara as the Lipstick-Face Demon, Leigh Whannell as Specs, Angus Sampson as Tucker, and Lin Shaye as Elsie Rainier.

The Plot:

Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son, Dalton, off at school. However, Dalton’s college dream soon becomes a living nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.

Positives:

One positive I have about this movie was the tone of the movie as it had a tone of finality for *THIS* chapter of the Insidious franchise. I enjoyed how dark this movie got for a PG-13 horror movie as it didn’t hold back on the scares…with that being said that also is a drawback which we will get to later. The demons were terrifying, I audibly said “Nope.” when one of them appeared.

The second positive I have about this movie were the performances especially Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins as father and son duo Josh Lambert and Dalton Lambert as they struggle to confront the demons of their past and present and it makes you root for them. Each cast member did a decent to great job in their roles. The demon performances were unsettling in a way that will make you feel a sense of disgust and discomfort. The third positive I have was the use of The Further and how terrifying it can get.

Negatives:

One negative I have was the overreliance on jumpscares, I felt like if you want to terrify your audience, throw in a couple jumpscares, not 5-7, I loved the background scares this movie had and the payoffs to said background scares. But the jumpscares seemed a bit excessive. Maybe, I’m being a bit harsh on the jumpscare element of the movie.

The second negative I have was the pacing as some parts of the movie seemed to drag in the beginning, however that is just a knit pick. But overtime the movie picks up which is fantastic.

My overall thoughts:

While I didn’t love this movie, I enjoyed it, however, don’t let these negatives and positives affect your viewing experience of Insidious: The Red Door as I recommend checking it out whenever you get the chance to do so. Check it out in theaters, streaming, and physical media (when it comes out). At least it made $32.6 million at the box office in its opening weekend which is fantastic for horror. Okay, I know it seemed like I was ripping into this movie, but I mean it when I say go check it out whenever you get the chance.

Ever since finishing Pokemon Violet, I have been wanting to write fics for it.

More specifically about Clavell.

I had one planned where he would explain to the faculty about the whole thing with operation starfall. In order to help Team Star and have them be seen in a different light.

Another where he and Juliana come to Area Zero because I think he'd want to see what Sada/Turo has done and what his friend has become along with everything else the squad discovered down there. Also Juliana/Florian coming in terms that she was traumatized about being defenseless and thought for sure that they were all gonna die back then.

Then also I have another story idea of sort of like a fix-it story where Juliana/Florian save AI Sada/Turo and even have this whole thing of thinking that the loose Tera Crystals they've found would help being the power source instead and managed to drag the AI out of the crater and with Clavell and Geeta they managed to give the AI a better life and to finally reconcile with Arven to give him a family he never had either....

I'm out of my mind... I have way too many ideas from other series too.

I'll do my best in writing them....

“Let’s see…” Juliana talks to herself while she glances at her Rotom phone. She walks along a path that’s bordered by a grassy route, where docile pokemon of Deerling, Lechonk, and Litleo wander. “So according to the map, the next Team Star base should be right around…”

“Ah, Juliana. Perfect timing.”

The girl looks up from her phone and notices another student approaching her. He’s attired in the academy’s gray winter blazer, paired with tangerine-colored academy shorts, usually worn in the summer, that don’t match whatsoever. The most prominent feature of all though is the student’s extravagant pompadour hair that swoops towards the clouds. This absurd outfit can only be one person in particular.

“Oh, Clive! Good to see you,” Juliana greets her Operation Starfall partner. “Since you’re here too, I assume the next Team Star base is just up ahead?”

“Your assumption would be correct,” Clive says a little too formally. He clears his throat. “I’ve already scoped out the perimeter. There’s one member standing at the front gate while the rest are waiting inside, so nothing different from the other base we’ve gone to. I also made sure that there were no unexpected traps laid out for us this time as well.”

“Wow, taking it extra seriously today, huh?”

“I don’t want to take any chances.” Clive pauses for a brief moment. “Although, I hope I’m not being too serious. I still like to stay easygoing like my fellow students,” he ends his sentence with both hands moving to slick the sides of his pompadour hair. 

Juliana lets out a quiet sigh to herself. Even though this is only the second Team Star base the two are heading towards, Director Clavell is still holding on to his silly Clive persona. It wasn’t hard for Juliana to figure out it was the Director the first time she saw the new “student.” When she questioned him, he would deny all relation to anyone named “Director Clavell” and insisted that she referred to him as “Clive.” Per his request, she went along with his act. She knows that his attempts to hide his appearance is his way of fitting in with his students. On top of this, he wants to find out the truth about Team Star when no one else will. She respects him for that.

Although sometimes the masked appearance becomes a bit too obstructive. Juliana wants to connect more with Director Clavell not Clive, but it’s difficult to do so when he keeps up the whole “fellow student” act. Despite this, she still knows Director Clavell is keeping a watchful eye when hints of his mature authority slip through the guise. His hands are usually positioned behind his back, his posture is rigid, and his gaze observes everything around him, just like he’s doing now. 

That settles it then. Before the next Team Star base, Juliana wants to have some fun with him. A game that can let the real Director Clavell shine through, even with the disguise on. Plus, letting loose could help his disguise become more convincing. She scans Clive up and down, focusing on his stiff posture. With this, she thinks up a strategy that she hopes will be effective. Clive had already searched for traps earlier, but now Juliana needs to lure him into one. 

“Well, if I’m being honest, Clive,” Juliana responds to his previous comment, “you do seem a little stiff.”

“Stiff?” Clive straightens up his spine on reflex. “How so?” he rolls his shoulders back and tries to act casual.

“You look a little tense, maybe even stressed,” Juliana lays it on thick, “Not very easygoing if you ask me.”

“I see,” Clive pushes up his purple rimmed glasses, slightly anxious due to his charade being put on the spot. “Do you have any suggestions then on how to prevent this stiffness?”

Juliana smiles. Now for the final piece for her disguise wavering puzzle. “As a matter of fact, I do!”

“Oh! That’s good to hear.” Clive watches as the girl casually approaches him. Juliana stops in front of his side. “So what exactly does this strategy consist of—AH!” Clive suddenly flinches when Juliana darts her hands under his blazer to tickle him as fast as a pokemon using quick attack.

“A tickle attack, of course!” Juliana exclaims.

Clive takes a small step back with Juliana’s fingers still locked onto his sides. A wobbly smile tugs at the corners of his mouth while he attempts to suppress the childish giggles bubbling in his throat. “T-Tickling is the strategy?” Clive tries to cover his twitchy smile behind a balled up hand, also turning his head away from the girl to hide his uncharacteristic expression.

“Yep! It’s a perfect method to get almost anyone smiling and to prevent stiffness!” the girl innocently beams while her fingers skitter across his sides and stomach. “So, do you feel loosened up yet?”

“I d-dohohon’t know,” Clive lets some giggles slip out, which allows the rest of the joyful laughter he was holding back to release like a pack of schoolchildren running outside to play. He’s been completely taken aback from the surprise barrage of tickles that he can’t think of a response as Clive, meaning the plan to see more of Director Clavell is working!

“Well, we can’t have that! Time to boost the attack power!” 

“Nohohow wahahait a sehehecohohond!” Clive takes another step back, then twists to the side to try and escape, but Juliana catches him by his lower ribs and scribbles her little hands into the fabric of his undershirt to reach the ticklish area. 

Clive yelps and squishes his arms to his sides, nearly toppling backwards. “Ohohohoh nohoho! Nohohot the rihihibs!” Immobilized by Juliana’s playful strategy, Clive curls himself up and slides to the ground. Juliana shifts herself to the side of him to keep her tiny fingers caught under his blazer, while Clive repositions himself as a rolled up ball of laughter in an attempt to ward off the tickles.

“Hehe, I didn’t think you would be this ticklish Director Cla—Er. I mean, Clive,” Juliana quickly corrects herself. Luckily for her, Clive was too preoccupied with trying to wriggle away from her fingers fluttering along his tummy that he didn’t notice.

“I fohohohorgot hohohow tihihihicklish I was tohohohoo!” Clive turns onto his side and tries to bury his silly expression in his chest, but Juliana can still see the bright smile on his face. 

Despite Director Clavell saying that he feels out of touch with his students, his own laugh is as giddy as a child’s, filled with little squeaks and carefree cheer. Juliana sees that this looser side of himself removes any worry of that disconnection with his students. She’s glad for that.

“Julianahahaha!’ Clive’s exclamation of laughter pulls the girl from her thoughts, “Nohoho more! Nohoho mohohore, plehehease!”

“Oh! Sorry!” Juliana reels back her hands towards her chest, like she has gotten in trouble. Clive leans his head back onto the dirt path, gulping down air that he had lost in the midst of Juliana’s game. He no longer looked as stiff as before, but Juliana fears that she may have “loosened” him up too much.

With worried eyes, she grabs both of his arms and pulls him forward so he can sit upright. “Are you alright Clive?” she leans on her knees.

He must have sensed her concern. Knowing that a student was in need of reassurance, Director Clavell looks up at her with a soft, comforting smile. 

“I’m fine,” he responds. “Please, don't worry. As a matter of fact, I feel much less stiff than I did before.”

“You…you do?” Juliana‘s voice quivers. She couldn’t tell if he was just saying that to make her feel better.

“I do,” he speaks with the mature clarity of an academy director. “Thank you.”

After observing his expression, Juliana notices the softness lingering on his face. It’s Director Clavell who was talking to her just now, not Clive. Her method really did help. 

“That’s a relief then,” she returns the soft smile. She then lends him a hand back to his feet.

“Now, what are we waiting for?” Juliana swivels to face the path ahead of her. “Look out Team star! Here comes the members of Operation Starfall!” she shouts enthusiastically. Juliana turns to see Clive’s newly relaxed appearance through his disguise. It’s clear to her that he feels more accepted, knowing he’s a part of a team with a caring student by his side.

I would love to hear more about Robin, specifically :3 Gimme deets, please!

Oh yeah I guess I should do that

In an out of universe sense, Robin is my particular brand of Juliana. I designed her to fit the experience I had with Scarlet... which basically involved me poking my nose into every. single. corner. of Paldea. She's a hiker, backpacker, and budding photographer, because all those things are what I spent the entirety of my playthrough doing. I think I got like forty hours in before I finally was convinced to stop fucking around and go for the non-Path of Legends badges. A lot of the DLC I did as wing-sister to @the-starkindler, who was playing Violet, and we developed a lengthy headcanon winding the two versions together using our respective characters -- you know, like an Emerald version. This bit is key because it means there are two bike-dragons running around Paldea and the Academy, instead of being represented by one fruit, is more of a basket of them. (Insert jokes here.)

I'm going to put a cut here, because I have a lot to say about my silly girl. Beware all who enter here, for there are OC headcanons afoot.

In-universe, Robin is an established student at the Naruva academy, in her second year, arriving sometime after the Team Star dust-up. She is Kalosian, from somewhere in the vague area of Anistar City (if you don't remember your Kalos locations, that's the place with the big red sundial). She's an introvert who grew up in a family of extroverts, and, as you can imagine, that need for a moment of peace fueled her early interest in backpacking. This got markedly worse when the little sisters started arriving. She has five younger sisters, all between the ages of eight and four at the time of her second year. For context, she's going on sixteen at that point.

(I love my little sister dearly, but she alone was almost enough to send me howling into the wilderness. Five of those? Yeah, Robin's a backpacking pro for a reason.)

At ten (because that's such a sane age to do this), Robin's mom nudged her out the door to do the traditional Kalos Gym circuit. Robin came home from that with a level 100 Espurr, several memory cards' worth of pictures of Kalos, and like, two badges. Her mom wasn't overly surprised.

This is kinda how Robin is. She doesn't want to be a powerful Trainer for the sake of being powerful. She makes herself strong so that she can easily do whatever it is she actually wants to do, which is See All The Things. She's not real worried about whether those Things are supposed to be Off-Limits or not, either. So, as you can imagine, she's fascinated by the stories of the mysterious and/or off-limits places of the world. Cerulean Cave. Mount Silver. Mirage Island. The Great Crater of Paldea.

So when her mom suggests Naruva Academy for her, well, she leaps at the chance. Mom figures hey, her kid may be a little odd, but she clearly has a way with Pokemon, and she's sharp, so send the kid to a good school and see what develops. Robin, on the other hand, is plotting her first Great Crater expedition within seconds of the conversation.

Does this mean she's in and out of the Great Crater a lot? Well, not really, though it's not for lack of trying. The Great Crater really is hard to get into without a flying Pokemon at the very least, and the strength of the wild Pokemon there is considerable. She never gets very far in before having to turn back for simple survival. Nevertheless, she's determined to see the bottom of it someday. (Also she does have to attend classes, which cuts into her exploring time severely. Gotta keep dem grades up or mom might pull her home! The grades net her a Tera Orb though, so hell yeah.)

One question that could be asked is, did she know the Paldea Pals before, since she's an established student? Well, yes and no. She knows of Arven, because the poor guy is utterly overshadowed at this point by his shitlord parents. She knows of Nemona -- there probably isn't anyone in the school who doesn't, to be utterly fair. She doesn't really have any opinion on either. They run in different circles, and the most she's interacted with either is whenever Nemona pounced on her looking for a battle. (Yes, she accepted. No, she never won!)

So how does she get pulled into the Scarlet story? Well, one weekend, while she was out chilling with her Pokemon in the wilds of Paldea, there was a really loud sonicboom overhead, and a few minutes later, a tired-looking red lizard Pokemon walked into her campsite. Like most people, she assumed he was a rare breed of Cyclizar at first, because who expects an ancient legendary Pokemon to just waltz into your life and ask for a sandwich? He's injured, but not badly, and she has the brilliant idea to take him back to the Academy with her and see if the teachers can help. She cuts her picnic short and does just that. No problem, right? Nothing life changing about that.

As you have no doubt guessed, the sonicboom was Miraidon fleeing the crater after being attacked by his nasty counterpart. Koraidon, in this melded universe, was brought over as well before <redacted>, and he and the Miraidon actually bonded and are buddies. When Mirai ran for his life, Kori tried to follow, but he's not as fast and had to land. (Miraidon has that jet butt, after all.)

From here, she gets enmeshed in the Scarlet and Violet storylines -- or, well, some of them anyway. The storylines are divided between her and Mirai's rider Alanna. They sort of swap between player one and player two frequently. Robin was involved the most with the DLC stories and Starfall Street. She was the one Ogerpon chose as a partner (maybe it was all that little sister experience!), and she ended up with Chien-Pao out of the four Treasures. (This is not quite as cool as it sounds. Pao just wants to PLAY. All the fuckin time.)

Let's see, what else. Oh, she has a massive crush on Perrin (unrequited), and though she starts out wanting to shove Carmine into the river, they bond over time and Robin kiiiinda thinks she's cute. (Does this count as Carmine x Juliana shipping? Probably not lmao)

Tl;dr, my Scarlet character is pretty fun.

A Dark Path Walked Chapter 1: The Meeting

It has been three months ever since Juliana moved from Galar to Paldea. She barely made herself at home in Cabo Poco when she decided to enroll in Naranja Academy. Not only that, Director Clavell made a visit to her house to tell her that her enrollment has been accepted. Along the journey to her new school, she met her neighbor and classmate, Nemona, who loves to battle and the two became rivals when Juliana picked Fuecoco and Nemona chose Quaxly. The newly-moved girl then met a mysterious creature called Koraidon/Miraidon after she fell off Poco Path and survived thanks to her Rotom Phone being used as a parachute, they escaped a pack of Houndour and Houndoom and met their Houndoom leader, who proved to be way too strong to Juliana and Fuecoco and Koraidon/Miraidon rescued her.

On her way to the Poco Lighthouse, she and Nemona met a young man named Arven, who is not only also a student of the same Academy she enrolled, he is also the son of the esteemed Professor Sada. After a beautiful view from the Lighthouse and an extremely long trip through Los Platos and South Province due to her not having a Cyclizar, Juliana finally arrives in Mesagoza. Before she could enter Naranja Academy, she saved a girl with an Eevee bag named Penny from some trouble making students who call themselves Team Star and she also received a Tera Orb from Nemona during the confrontation.

Upon entering the esteemed Naranja Academy, not only could she see how big and marvelous the place is, she also met Jacq, her homeroom teacher and the creator of the Paldean Pokédex, got some requests to defeat the eight gym leaders and Pokémon League from Nemona, find Five mysterious herbs called Herba Mystica from Arven and put an end to Team Star’s trouble making behavior from a mysterious entity called Cassiopeia for her Treasure Hunt. Juliana also learned that Koraidon can help her by being a ride Pokémon like Cyclizar and that made it easier for her to travel. During her Treasure Hunt, not only did she grow stronger, she also helped Nemona complete her goal of finding the perfect rival for her which turned out to be Juliana herself, used the Herba Mystica to not only restore Koraidons ability to travel better like climbing, gliding and swimming, but also cure Arven’s partner Mabostiff, who got badly injured during an expedition in Area Zero, and proved to Team Star and their leader, Cassopeia, aka Penny, that there is no need to be afraid in going back to school and that hurting others is not the right thing to do. Juliana also learned of Team Star’s tragic backstory of them being bullied by other students and retaliating against them.

After that ordeal is done, Juliana was about to rest back at Naranja Academy when she got a call from Arven to meet him at Zero Gate at the Great Crater of Paldea, which is forbidden entry due to how dangerous it is since the Quaking Earth Titan was a Great Tusk that escaped from the even dangerous Area Zero. She met him, Nemona and Penny at the entrance and they got the elevator to the lift to Area Zero working thanks to Penny’s hacking skills.

It took them a bit longer to enter since Koraidon did not want to go there due to some trauma, but the four students helped out. As soon as they entered, Koraidon returned to its Pokéball because of fear, which led the four of them to find Professor Sada, who is trapped in the Zero Lab, by foot. Along the way, they unlocked all four locks in the research stations blocking the entrance to Zero Lab, fighting a Glimmora outside the first station, which Nemona recognizes as a Pokémon Geeta, La Primera, owns, a Scream Tail, which Penny confused for a Jigglypuff, and another Great Tusk. At the same time, the behavior of Professor Sada is acting stranger and stranger.

Upon reaching the Zero Lab, they confront another Koraidon that sent Juliana’s Koraidon away after a turf war and an army of ancient looking Pokémon similar to Misdreavus and Amoongus. Nemona, Penny and Arven stayed behind to hold the reinforcements while Juliana entered the Zero Lab.

As she explores the Zero Lab, she sees Professor Sada, but it is an AI made to look and act like Professor Sada because the real Professor Sada passed away protecting Juliana’s Koraidon from the aggressive Koraidon. The AI takes Juliana to the time machine and begs for her to stop the original Professor’s wishes to continue the Time Machine. As she tries to fulfill the AI’s wish, it challenges her to a battle with a team of ancient looking Pokémon.When Nemona, Arven and Penny arrive to help Juliana, the AI activates the Time Machine’s Paradise Protection Protocol to lock all Pokémon except those on the ownership of Professor.

Just when all hope is lost when the AI sends out the aggressive Koraidon, Juliana uses the Koraidon she has been taking care of. Her kindness and devotion helped Koraidon regain its true strength and with everyone’s cheers, Koraidon defeated its aggressive counterpart.

Victory was bittersweet. Paldea was saved, but Arven learned the truth of his mother from an AI who was replicating her appearance and behavior. And not only that, AI Sada decided to use the time machine to go to the ancient past to discover her dream and freedom.

It has been three months ever since the start of the Treasure Hunt. Juliana had a long schedule, doing the Gym Inspections in Geeta’s stead, participating in the Academy Ace tournament founded by Nemona, completing her Pokédex and helping Professor Jacq on his research with Tera Raids.

Her Rotom Phone Rang when she had caught a mysterious ancient Suicune called Walking Wake.

“Hello?” She answered the call.

“Hello, Juliana, my girl!” Professor Jacq said with his useful cheerful tone.

“Hello, Professor Jacq.” The brown haired girl smiled. “Did you need something for your research?” “Actually, I called you for something else.” Professor Jacq answered. “Remember when you signed up for a lottery for an upcoming school trip?” “Yes. I did.” Juliana nodded, playing with her braid. “What happened?” “We just got the results in just a day and you are one of four students to be chosen for the trip!” The Professor said with a happier tone. “Really?!” Juliana beamed in joy. “I’m chosen! I’m so happy!” “No need to worry about asking permission.” Jacq said. “Your mother gave us the good to go. Why don’t you meet me and a special someone at the Academy’s Entrance?”

“I will.” Juliana smiled. “See you there.”

As she hung up the call, she couldn’t help herself when she jumped in joy. It was the first time she had a trip ever since moving out from Galar. She ran towards Skeledirge, Koraidon and the rest of her Pokémon. “Koraidon, Skeledirge, Tinkaton, Kilowatrel, Arboliva, Armarouge, Annihalape!” She cheered. “We are chosen for the trip! We’re going to make so many friends! People and Pokémon alike!” Her Pokémon made a variety of noises in celebration, the loudest being Skeledirge and Koraidon. “Let’s go back to Naranja Academy! Professor Jacq is waiting for us!” She said as she recalled her Pokémon except for Koraidon.

After she made some preparations, Juliana entered Naranja Academy, where at the entrance hall, a woman with dark blond hair was waiting for her. The woman turned around as Juliana approached her.

“Ah. Hello, you must be Juliana, right?” The woman greeted the girl. “One of four students in Naranja Academy chosen by lottery?” “Yes, ma’am.” Juliana nodded. “I am Juliana.” “Nice to meet you, sweet Juliana.” The woman smiled. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Briar, and I will be your guide for our field trip to Kitakami. I am also a teacher at Blueberry Academy, which is located in Unova.” “Blueberry Academy, such a cool name!” Juliana got more excited to hear of Blueberry Academy. “I’m happy to hear that you love the small details I gave to our school.” Briar said with joy in her voice. “I am also here for another reason… Have you heard of Area Zero?” “Yes.” Juliana nodded. “I went there as part of my Treasure Hunt.” “I see.” Briar hummed. “Apparently, I am here to request access to Area Zero after hearing of a mysterious Pokémon called Terapagos. I even got the original note about Terapagos from Heath, the founder of the Scarlet Book, who is my ancestor. Anyway, let us change the topic back to the field trip. Did you make some preparations for our trip to Kitakami?” “Of course, ma’am.” Juliana nodded. Jacq and three other students, a small boy wearing a red cap, a taller boy and a girl, arrive. “Apologies for my lateness, Miss Briar.” Jacq said. “I was making some updates on the Pokédex app since Kitakami will have different Pokémon.” “My, you are very well-prepared, Mister Jacq.” Briar mused. “Juliana, would you allow me to update the Pokédex App on your Rotom Phone?” Jacq turned to Juliana.

“Of course, Professor Jacq!” Juliana agreed.

After Jacq upgraded Juliana’s Pokédex to add the Kitakami Pokédex, Briar, Juliana and the other three students headed off for a long plane flight and bus ride to Kitakami Road in the Kitakami region. As they took a rest at the bus stop, the red cap student started feeling motion sick and Briar requested Juliana to find some help at the nearby town’s community center. Juliana agreed out of kindness and selflessness, and headed off to the nearby Mossui Town.

Juliana was intrigued by the variety of Pokémon not seen in Paldea, Yanma, Poochyena, Volbeat, Johtoian Wooper, Corphish and Sewaddle. She stopped herself from being distracted as she arrived at Mossui Town and saw a pair of siblings, an older sister and a younger brother, talking to each other in front of the community center.

“Are those two kids residents of Mossui Town?” Juliana thought to herself. “Maybe they can help tend to Josue.”

The younger brother saw Juliana and turned to his sister. “Sis! Look!” He said. “There’s another one!”

The Older sister smiled to herself and ran off towards Juliana with her younger brother following her and hiding behind her back.

“Hello.” The Older sister greeted Juliana by waving. “I see that you do not belong here in Kitakami. Who might you be?” “Hello.” Juliana smiled, unaware that the kindness the older sister has is a facade. “I’m Juliana. I study at Naranja Academy in Paldea and I need your help.”

The younger brother leaned sideways a bit from behind his sister and looked at Juliana in awe.

“No way…” He muttered. “So cool…”

“Hush, Kieran.” The older sister turned to her younger brother, Kieran, before facing Juliana. “Anyway, Juliana, my name is Carmine and I am afraid I cannot let you pass to Mossui Town. Not unless you battle me.”

“Hold on.” Juliana raised her hands. “I actually need help.” “She’s right, Sis.” Kieran said. “We can’t just battle strangers out of nowhere.”

“Kiki… I said-” Carmine growled before she was interrupted by Juliana. “One of my classmates fell ill after a long flight and bus ride and I need to find someone who can help me out by tending to him.” Juliana said. “N-no way!” Kieran shook his head. “Th-this is a very serious matter! I’ll go get the caretaker so he can help!”

As Kieran runs off to get some help, Carmine turns to him. “Kiki, what are you-?!” Carmine tried to call out to her brother, but he was far off, so she turned to Juliana. “Well, it seems that you managed to speak some sense to my younger brother, but unfortunately, you will not fool me.” “This isn’t a joke!” Juliana tried to calm Carmine down.

“I don’t care what you say. We are going to battle.” Carmine growled as she took a Pokéball and sent out Poochyena.

Juliana sighed as she had no choice as she sent out Annihalape.

It didn’t take some effort for Juliana since she just used Annihalape to defeat Carmine’s Poochyena, Vulpix and Poltchageist.

“I cannot believe it!” Carmine growled as she grabbed the strands on her hair. “There is no way you should have been able to beat me!” She takes a deep breath and calms down. “Alright… I guess you pass… barely. I’ll let you into town. But only if you become one of my grunts and do every little thing I-”

Just as Carmine was about to make Juliana into her “grunt”, Kieran and an old man come out of the community center. “Oi!” The man called out to Carmine. “What are you doing, causing a ruckus out here?!”

“Tch… here comes trouble.” Carmine hissed before running off.

“Sis! Wait up!” Kieran called out to her to no avail. He let out a sigh. “I am so sorry… Sis can be… stubborn.”

“It’s ok.” Juliana smiled. “I dealt with worse.” “I see that you are a student of Naranja Academy” The old man turned to Juliana and smiled. “I will be the caretaker for your trip. I apologize for Carmine’s behavior. She has been rowdy as of last week. Also, I got word from Kieran that you need help on a classmate of yours who fell ill. Is that correct?” “Y-yes, sir.” Kieran nodded.

“Very Well.” The Caretaker said. “I will help out.” “Thank you.” Juliana said. “They’re still at the bus stop.”

“Thank you, young lady.” The Caretaker smiled. “You are such a kind girl.”

The Caretaker left to tend to the sick student.

“Th-thank you for the w-warning.” Kieran said, playing with his hair. “And… I’m sorry for Sis’ behavior…”

“Don’t worry about it.” Juliana smiled. “You made the right choice to tell someone. Oh, she did challenge me to a battle and I defeated her.” “Wowzers!” Kieran gasped. “You actually beat my sis?! No people could defeat Sis when they arrived at Kitakami.”

“You have a lot of knowledge on this, Kieran.” Juliana shook her head.

“I actually live here.” Kieran smiles shily. “And… I look forward to studying with you for this Field Trip.”

Kieran ran back home as Briar, the caretaker and the students arrived, the red cap the student feeling better. After that, everyone had a feast at the community center and had a goodnight sleep.

“What an interesting Field Trip we’re gonna have.” Juliana thought to herself. “Kieran’s such a nice kid… but Carmine… I feel like I might have trouble trying to get to know her if she has some issues with me trying to enter Mossui…”

The Paldean girl went to bed, trying to get a good night's sleep for the next day.
