Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors
Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?
What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.
Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.
Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.
I broke them up into rough categories, which are, again, approximate. I know I often forget how young the real life people were here, and this was a good reminder of that. I also found it interesting to see which actors were actually younger than their roles!

🌟Mfred's Best Books of 2022🌟
Comfort Me with Apples by Cathrynne M. Valente
Original Review
It’s a fairy tale retold, a myth re-examined. It’s a mystery, a thriller, and a horror story. But it’s so much more, too. I was mesmerized - trying to understand what was going on, then understanding too much, with a dawning sense of horror at how it would all end.
The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne
Original Review
This book put me through the wringer, you guys. I came out the other end definitely dehydrated from crying so much, but also filled to the brim with love and life.
Even Though I Knew the End by CL Polk
Sapphic. Urban Fantasy. Noir. Do I need to say more? OK, I will anyway! Chicago in the winter. Dames smoking Chesterfields and hunting serial killers. Underground queer nightclubs. And magic! And a swoony romance!
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White
Original Review
Don’t be fooled, Benji is really turning into a monster. White pulls no punches. Bloody, gruesome, and terrifying. It’s so queer, so righteously angry, so necessarily vengeful. But it also holds a place for the tenderness and hope we all need to truly survive.
Thirteens by Kate Alice Marshall
A spooky and super creepy Halloween read, especially for a children’s book! Plus, the power of friendship, loyalty, and believing in yourself.
The Mind and the Moon: My Brother's Story, the Science of Our Brains, and the Search for Our Psyches by Daniel Bergner
Challenges the science behind mental illness and standard pharmaceutical treatments. At once eye-opening, engrossing, and also emotional.
A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow
Lucky you! If you didn’t read the first in this series, you now get to read both amazing books! This time we see what happens when the Evil Queen wants a better ending to her story. And also what it means to survive a happy ending.
My Killer Vacation by Tessa Bailey
Original Review
I loved Myles. I loved his struggle. Every time Taylor did or said something, his heart clenched or he got sweaty or he desperately wanted to kiss her. He’s big, he’s tattooed, he’s unshaven and rides a motorcycle and he is a total dummy about his emotions. It’s great.
Paper Girls, Vols 1-6 by Brian K. Vaughn, Cliff Chiang, Matt Wilson, & Jared K. Fletcher
Friendship! Time travel! The 1980s! A war between teenagers vs. grownups! This graphic novel series has it all. And the artwork is amazing.
Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen
Ok, how do you feel about The Bachelor? Cryptids? Horrifically funny violence? This book is so weird and also so, so amazing.
Runaway Girl by Tessa Bailey
A poor little rich girl who really isn’t and a bear of a man dealing with unimaginable loss. Slow burn but awesome tension and chemistry throughout. Plus, the emotional wallop of falling in love. Everything good about romance novels.
Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison
Original Review
Amazing. A novel about anger, trauma, families, romance, trusting others, and werewolves. It really takes a good, hard look at why and when and how and how often we get angry– and how we treat others and ourselves when we rage. The werewolf metaphor is grrrreat (see what I did there?) for examining what it means to be an angry woman, in/out of control.
We Keep the Dead Close: A Murder at Harvard and a Half Century of Silence by Becky Cooper
Original Review
It took me almost two months to finish this book. But it wasn’t boring or slow. In fact, for such a lengthy book, it’s a real page turner. And it’s a fascinating blend of true crime, non fiction and memoir– how Cooper finds her own voice in the story of Jane Britton’s murder.

New research casts doubt on role of fungus in driving pancreatic cancer
Four years ago, a report that a common species of fungus might fuel pancreatic cancer offered a promising new view of the deadly disease. But in working to validate the finding, Duke Health researchers have found no such association. In a study appearing online Aug. 3 in the journal Nature, the Duke researchers conducted a multi-pronged analysis of data from the earlier study and found no link between the pancreatic microbiome and the development of pancreatic cancer. “We were intrigued by the original finding, as were many research teams,” said senior author Peter Allen, M.D., professor in the Department of Surgery and chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Duke University School of Medicine. “There is a growing body of literature connecting the human microbiome to disease, and this was particularly compelling for pancreatic cancer,” Allen said. “But our findings did not support an association between fungi and the development of pancreatic cancer in humans.” Allen and colleagues worked to recreate the 2019 findings published in Nature by a different research team. The original study raised hopes that there might be a possible method of preventing pancreatic cancer with the use of antifungals or some other approach to protect from infection. Focusing on the research team’s original raw sequencing data, the Duke researchers were unable to reproduce the findings. Additional studies, using pancreatic cancer tissue in Duke repositories, also failed to produce the original results. “We believe our findings highlight the challenges of using low biomass samples for microbiome sequencing studies,” Allen said. “The inclusion of appropriate negative controls and efforts to identify and remove sequencing contaminants is critical to the interpretation of microbiome data.” In addition to Allen, study authors include Ashley A. Fletcher, Matthew S. Kelly, and Austin M. Eckhoff. The work was funded by the Duke University School of Medicine through a grant from the Duke Microbiome Center. Kelly and Eckhoff receive funding from the National Institutes of Health (K23-AI135090, T32-CA093245).

The clip options Minj in full Winifred Sanderson drag, alongside queens Gidget Galore and MR MS Adrien as sister witches Mary and Sarah, respectively. Followers of 1993’s “Hocus Pocus,” which starred Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker because the Sanderson sisters, will discover a lot of the film’s iconic scenes faithfully recreated ― albeit with a contemporary polish. Watch the video for “I Put a Spell on You” beneath. “It’s the season of the witch!” Minj, whose actual identify is Joshua Allen Eads, instructed HuffPost in an interview. “You may stroll into any homosexual bar within the nation between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1, and most certainly you’ll discover a trio of queens lip-syncing this tune. I believed: ‘It’s been 29 years, let’s give it slightly facelift!’” The “I Put a Spell on You” video is directed by Minj’s husband, CeeJay Russell, additionally a longtime “Hocus Pocus” devotee. “I’ve at all times wished to direct my husband in a video,” Russell mentioned in an e-mail, “and when he requested me, I jumped on the alternative.” Minj, a Florida native, was a finalist on the seventh season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which aired in 2015. Since then, she’s launched three studio albums and appeared in a lot of films, together with Netflix’s “Dumplin,’” starring Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald. “She’s my new drag mother,” Minj mentioned of her “Hocus Pocus 2” co-star Bette Midler. Final yr, she was performing as sea witch Ursula in a “Disney Villains” present in England when she obtained a name from “Dumplin’” director Anne Fletcher, who’d not too long ago been employed to direct “Hocus Pocus 2.” “Subsequent factor I do know, I’m arguing on-camera with Bette Midler about enamel,” quipped Minj, who seems as a drag model of Winifred Sanderson within the movie alongside two different “Drag Race” veterans, Kahmora Corridor and Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté, as Sarah and Mary Sanderson. As to what she discovered from working with the Divine Miss M herself, she added: “She’s my new drag mother.” Originally published at San Jose News HQ

Ann Harding and William Powell in Double Harness (John Cromwell, 1933) Cast: Ann Harding, William Powell, Lucile Browne, Henry Stephenson, Lilian Bond, George Meeker, Reginald Owen, Kay Hammond, Leigh Allen, Hugh Huntley, Wallis Clark, Fred Santley. Screenplay: Jane Murfin, based on a play by Edward Poor Montgomery. Cinematography: J. Roy Hunt. Art direction: Charles M. Kirk, Van Nest Polglase. Film editing: George Nichols Jr. Double Harness is a rather brittle comedy of manners that might be better known if it hadn't vanished for years, owing to a dispute between producer Merian C. Cooper and RKO. Because it was withheld from release until Turner Classic Movies obtained the rights to it in 2007, we had one less opportunity to see Ann Harding, once expected to become a major Hollywood star on the strength of her looks and her stage-trained voice, the latter a great asset in the early years of talking pictures. Harding gives a good performance in Double Harness, but she lacked the vivid personality of actresses of the period who became bigger stars, like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Barbara Stanwyck, so her career never quite took off. She plays Joan Colby, member of a well-to-do family that finds itself on the skids in the depression, so that she and her giddy sister, Valerie (Lucile Browne), need to marry well in order to regain status. Valerie does marry, but her spendthrift ways keep her on the hunt for money to pay the debts she hides from her husband. Joan is taken with John Fletcher (William Powell), heir to a successful shipping company but more interested in playing polo than in running the business -- or in getting married. Joan overcomes the latter obstacle by a trick: She arranges for her father (Henry Stephenson) to discover her in Fletcher's apartment, which she has more or less moved into, one night. Fletcher does the right thing and marries her, unaware that he's been tricked, but he and Joan also come to an agreement that they will divorce after a suitable period of time elapses. Naturally, they begin to fall more deeply in love, as Fletcher begins to realize that Joan has not only made life more pleasant for him, she has also begun to take a hand in his shipping business. But then Valerie spills the beans about how Joan had tricked Fletcher into marrying her, and an old flame of his, Monica Page (Lilian Bond), takes advantage of his anger and tries to snare him for herself. And so on to the anticipated outcome. Double Harness is a little too arch and stagey for its own good, and the idea that a man might have to marry a young woman because she's found in his apartment at night was a little old-fashioned even at the time, but Harding and Powell do what they can with the material.

Cancelled ships of WWII
Shortly before and during WWII, the U.S. Navy set about building a Fleet to meet the Axis head on and win. To due this, the Navy needed build a large number of ships, so it could effectively operate in both in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Tumblr media
By 1945, the war in the Atlantic and Pacific could be won with the ships already completed. So, starting in March, a number of ships were cancelled. The largest number were cancelled in August and shortly after the surrender of Japan. Final cancellations happened in 1946, as the military budget was being cutback.
Note: This list contains ships ordered or were intended to be completed during WWII but never completed/commissioned. It doesn't contain ships whose construction was suspended and completed at a later time.
Note: I have updated the list with some of the expected commission date.

Hawaii (CB-3), Alaska Class, expected commission May 1946.
Note: she was nearly finished after the war but like Alaska and Guam, she didn't have purpose anymore. Several conversion proposal were drawn to use her but none were chosen.

It should be noted, a lot of the ships ordered in 1944 and 1945 were for Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of mainland Japan if they had not surrendered. But also, the massive building program was institute to overwhelmed the Axis with superior numbers, just like the Air Corps and Army did with aircraft and tanks.

12 10
fine morning – hard frost F26° at 9 ¼ - wind whistling and every probability of more snow – sat reading the useful knowledge societys’ book on planting from p. 60 to 71 – breakfast at 9 ¾ in ½ hour – then out all the day till came in at 4 55 – with Robert M- and Jack and Sam Booth (and sent John B- to them from about 11 to 12) hacking up rubble and raising road near Back lodge gates – then with Pearson who came [fence] to me there down to his Tilley holm ordering about getting the brook stuff off the ground – then to Sun-wood walling and quarry  - sometime there – found fault with the walling – 4ft. instead of 4ft. 6in. high – and not enough inclined towards the wood – not burred enough – said I thought the drain-covers were only worth 1 1/d. per running yard getting – not 2d. as Hartley asked of Joseph M- and Booth seeming to have consented supposing them to have been better squared – then to Hill-top – there about 1 – a longish while talking to Fletcher – his cousin Empsall the butcher brother to my Allen car tenant would like to have Hilltop, and Fletcher might take part of the Simeon Roydes if E- would have too much land – Joseph Mann at Hilltop draining – told him to come tomorrow to see about trenching the brook stuff into Pearsons’ Tilly holm – then across the fields the Crownest road – no trace of A- returned by the high road – met her just above Mitham – home about 2 ½ - and out – about – the 2 Sharpes and Gray spite of front finished topping up the wall against the road at the Back Lodge gates – and then did up the little pigsty – part ½ of which was taken for the blacksmiths’ shop – came in at 4 55 – dressed – A- returned soon afterwards – went into the cellar for port wine to give to a poor old woman (Briggs – Lightcliffe) and took the 1st bottle of the 2 dozen lowest quality last from York (Oldfield)- gave ½ the bottle and put the rest into a ½ port bottle and took it into the cellar – very nice wine – O- has used us very well – had SW. to pay A- her Shibden rents – five hundred and three pounds plus Charles law has not paid SW. also paid me my cottage and pew rents and £31.17.6+£28.2.6 paid 4 November last = Hainsworths’ stone got from last midsummer to Xmas last – ordered the plan of Northgate to be ready as soon as possible – and a plan of the meer 2 chains to the inch which SW. said would not be much, or seemed to say would charge nothing for it – dinner at 7 ½ - before leaving the dining room, had Mallinson junior for answer about Mitham, whether he was to have it or not – yes! at the £30 per annum rent named before if nothing particular extra wanted – to be put in tenantable repair, and a mistal for 2 cows and a calf to be built – A- read French – tea at 9 – came upstairs at 10 and till 11 ½ wrote all the above of today and settled accounts A- sitting by me in the blue room all the while – Cookson returned this evening from her visit at home of about ten days – A- said the first time this afternoon she was all ponies’  very good little one  fine, hardfrosty, cold day – F27° now at 11 ¾ and went downstairs to stop the clock for ½ hour –
SW. said the H-x fields rent to be settled – his getting possession – the fields in better condition than when Greenwood gave them up – in very fair condition now! the shed lately repaired and in very good condition worth £5. worth as much as more than when G – sold it! £14 a year would be enough – worth 100 guineas per SW. to sell!

Strap in for a bit of a doozy, folks, this one’s weird! But good!! I promise!
If you like my brand of Allen60 prairie aesthetic but want some horror, give this lil fic a go!
Fletcher Allen may live an isolated life, but he's certainly not lonely.
He's never alone, either.
Rating: M (for horror imagery), Chapters: 1/1

Split: Eine Karikatur psychischer Krankheiten
