The style of jazz fusion contains a lot of overlap between a variety of outfits and musicians as you can observe from the credits. I mean, check Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean, where you can locate Allan Holdsworth among the players on the LP. Mind you, this shouldn't suggest the scene should be seen as insular. No, this only means the musicians in the brand like to support and collaborate with each other. True, I am too much of an optimist in here, so let us rather return to Mr. Ponty then. He enters the musical tone with a violin, which is not that prevalent within jazz fusion despite being well suited for the brand. Thus, his playing does give his tunes a sound outside that of many of his peers. Then again, this is what jazz fusion should be.

VA - Pyramid Pieces 2: Modern Jazz Australia 1969-1980
Following the critical acclaim of the 2020 compilation Pyramid Pieces, The Roundtable return with a second offering of modernist jazz from Australia. Another vital document further examining the nation’s jazz scene during the late 1960s and 70s. A fertile period that witnessed the birth of an independent movement and the development of a distinct Australian jazz sound. While continuing to focus on the modal forms explored in Volume 1, this second edition shifts direction slightly, this time also surveying other post-bop modes representative of the scene including soul jazz, avant-garde ballet music and Eric Dolphy-inspired free jazz.
Again featuring tracks from the esteemed independent imprints Jazznote and 44 Records, the collection also offers never before published pieces from less obvious Australian jazz groups. Compositions by internationally renowned musicians including Bob Bertles (Nucleus/Neil Ardley), Bruce Cale (The Spontaneous Music Ensemble/Prince Lasha) and Allan Zavod (Frank Zappa) alongside pillars of the local scene, Charlie Munro and Ted Vining plus the lesser-known yet formidable free jazz unit ‘Out To Lunch’. Pyramid Pieces 2 is another timely insight into the evolution of the incredible yet obscured Australian modern jazz movement.
* A compilation of Australian modern jazz. 1969-1980
* Rare modal, soul-jazz and free jazz from artists including The Charlie Munro Trio, Bob Bertles Moontrane, The Bruce Cale Quintet and The Ted Vining Trio.
* Tip-on sleeve featuring artwork from renowned Australian modernist painter James Meldrum.

Friday night fusion returns with this Jean-Luc Ponty record that’s just ok. The lineup also includes Tom Fowler (who also played with Zappa & the Mothers, including during the time Ponty was in the band), Daryl Stuermer (toured with Genesis et. al.), Allan Zavod (also played with Zappa much later) and Mark Craney on drums (never heard of you, dude.) The first cut is some weird country - gypsy - fusion hybrid, “Tarantula” is the “rock” cut on side one, and the stuff in the middle is almost some straight up Weather Channel / hold music sounding shit. The title-cut is all of side two, in four unnamed parts cuz why not. “Part I” has a little part that’s weirdly like a bit in Zappa’s “Marqueson’s Chicken” and the rest is also kinda decent and jazz-prog-sounding or whatever. I’ve had this for a couple years without exactly dying to listen to it, and now feel like $2 was about the perfect price for this one. Not the best thing in the genre or whatever, but not terrible.

One of the few joys that come with being an older music lover/audiophile is finding LP’s in your collection that you haven’t listened to in forever, but that, at one time, contained some of the most important music of your life. When I was younger (and so much wiser than today) my thoughts on what jazz was were contained in grooves the likes of this album - “Imaginary Voyage” by Jean-Luc Ponty. Fusion. That was jazz to me. And I loved it. This album in particular was a favorite. Right from the opening track, “New Country” I was hooked. Ponty had a way with playing (and writing) music that was at once accessible and challenging to listen to. Here he was backed up by Daryl Stuemer, Allan Zavod, Tom Fowler and Mark Craney. The music is what grabbed my attention as a kid, but today, one of the things about this particular album that seals the deal as an all-time fav is the fact that it was mastered by the great George Piros (yes, THAT George Piros) who did most of the work for Mercury Records back when those Living Presence LP’s were giving RCA’s Living Stereo albums a run for their money as far as recorded sound was concerned. George knew his stuff, and any album, classical, pop or jazz he had a hand in is well worth seeking out to truly hear everything that is within those grooves. And in the case of this album, what’s in those grooves is some damn fine fusion. Ponty had chops. After all, he’d played with quite a variety of musicians and genres - think of his time with Frank Zappa - so he knew what he wanted to say, and how to say it. I loved this album as a kid, and pulling it out now, and giving it a spin on a system that would have made that long gone kid shit his pants shows me that while the years have rolled by, and my musical tastes have changed (improved?!), my ear for great music has not. What I enjoyed in my younger days is still great music. This albums proves it. Most highly recommended. #lp #fusion #jazz #music #album #albumcover #record #recordcollection #stereo #analog #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #audio #highend #audiophile

Happy Birthday Dr. Allan Zavod
Happy Birthday Dr. Allan Zavod
Ήταν το “Does Humor Belong in Music” που περιείχε μια σειρά κομματιών του Frank Zappa, εκτελεσμένα ζωντανά από εκείνον και το σχήμα που τον συνόδευε στο The Pier της Νέας Υόρκης το 1984. Εμβόλιμα στα κομμάτια έπεφταν και κάποιες σκόρπιες…
