Cosmic Messenger Jean-Luc Ponty Turns 80
Always out there, Jean-Luc Ponty is getting up there, too, as the jazz violinist celebrates the big 8-oh today.
Born Sept. 29, 1942, in France, the classically trained Ponty moved to America in the early 1970s at the urging of Frank Zappa, one of his many collaborators over the years.
In addition to dozens of solo albums, the Cosmic Messenger Ponty has swum many an Enigmatic Ocean, working with Chick Corea, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Al DiMeola, Stanley Clarke, Béla Fleck, Sam Bush, Yes’ Jon Anderson and many others.
It’s been a life Upon the Wings of Music; always seeking, always adventurous, always uniquely Ponty.
The tour dates section of his website remains disappointingly empty. Perhaps as live music continues its comeback, the eclectic, electric violinist might do the same.

ABout me
I'm a girl BECAUSE EVERYONE THINKS I'M A GUY WHYYY
I am 15....
I like Phil Collins (obviously) , but I prefer his stuf in Brand X and a Genesis. I LOVE Earth, Wind & Fire, Johnny Hates Jazz, and Jean-Luc Ponty. I also enjoy jazz and jazz fusion..
I collect vinyl. I would collect tapes too, but my mom doesn't approve.
I also play sax HA!

I include this in the Frank Zappa section of my shelf, even though it’s a tribute album by jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. But this is not just Ponty recording some FZ tunes. In the immediate aftermath of Hot Rats, Ponty went into the studio with Zappa as his producer and arranger. The title track features former Mothers Ian Underwood on sax and Art Tripp on drums, and the only non-Zappa-penned song features Zappa on guitar. And the keyboardist for the whole thing is a name that feels inevitable now, but you have to remember that this date is the first time he has played with Frank Zappa: the incredible George Duke.
So yeah, this is a Zappa record, and very much a continuation of where Hot Rats left off (Ponty did contribute to Hot Rats, though he is not the famous violin from Willie the Pimp—that was Sugar Cane Harris). Listening to George Duke on it, it’s obvious why FZ kept him around recording and touring for the next 5 years and 75 or so albums (I am exaggerating but it’s a lot). And this features one debut Zappa piece created specifically for Ponty, Music for Electric Violin and Low Budget Orchestra. The composition would be repurposed later in the ‘70s and released on the Orchestral Favorites album and Läther.
You won’t find it on Zappa’s official discography, but I contend that no Zappa collection is complete without it. My copy (which I’d been looking for in the “P” jazz section in every record store I was ever in for about ten years before I finally saw one) is weirdly a British pressing.
