Road to Nowhere: Prelude - The New Guy In Town

Although it was a dream career for him since childhood, Ajay Loner’s job as an SCIA investigator hasn’t been easy. But considering his most recent assignment and subsequent relocation to Strangetown of all places, it’s about to get much, much harder.

He wouldn’t have gone for the job if he expected it to be an easy one, he enjoys a challenge and likes to solve mysteries - especially hard ones - but Strangetown was... different.

His colleagues warned him about the rumors and the mysteries surrounding the town, telling him to stay away if he valued his sanity. Usually, Ajay would’ve listened... but something about this case, perhaps the town itself, it called to him, and Ajay was determined to answer.

Before he knew it, he found himself driving down the infamous Road to Nowhere to greet his employer for his newest assignment.

His mission? Figure out what happened to Lyla Grunt.

Ajay wasn’t entirely sure what he was expecting when he first drove down the main road into the desert, but he found himself surprised with what he got. For a place located in the middle of nowhere, it was far from a ghost town.

And for a desert, it was actually quite lovely.

Well, it was, until he stepped out of the car. Leaving a nicely air conditioned vehicle and remembering the sensation of scorching summer heat was nauseating, but this is what he signed up for when he took on the case, so he wasn’t allowed to complain.

A part of him wished he got to investigate the Bella Goth case instead, he’d get the chance to spend more time in the much milder climate of Pleasantview before having to come here. But that was out of the SCIA’s hands now...

As Ajay approached the Grunt family house, he saw none other than General Buzz himself walk out, his gait stiff and disciplined. In fact, ‘stiff and disciplined’ could describe everything about him. It was kind of eerie just how much he exemplified his military role.

The General had a perpetual neutral half-scowl on his face - even when he turned to greet his visitor with a wave - and he spoke in a formal and terse manner. “Greetings. You must be Agent Loner.”

“That’s me.” Ajay replied with a (somewhat forced) smile, walking up to the other man and offering a hand to shake. “Agent Loner at your service, sir.”

Rather than accept the offering, the General lowered his waving hand and clasped them both behind his back. “I don’t have much time before I have to go to work, so let’s cut straight to the chase.”

Ajay couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but something about the General’s demeanor and tone of voice told him that the man seemed... embarrassed to have to rely on the SCIA to ‘fix’ his problems.

“As I’m sure you already know, my wife -” He quickly catches himself mid-sentence, “- ex wife - has gone missing, and she has been gone for over a month. I need you to find her.”

Naturally, Ajay took note of - and subsequently honed in on - the apparent sore spot that the General exposed, whether he meant to or not. “Are you sure she didn’t just leave town? You know, considering...”

“Of course I am.” He half-spoke, half-spat in reply. It was clear that this question struck a nerve. “She grew up here, had plenty of friends, and we had three sons together, the lives of whom she wanted to remain a part of after we divorced. I can tell you with full confidence that it's not in her nature to willfully disappear.”

“Noted.” Ajay said, doing exactly that by jotting everything down in a little notebook before looking back up to find that the General’s scowl had grown much wider. There was anger in his eyes, and it didn’t take much for Ajay to figure out why. “I didn’t mean to assume anything, sir. I’m just trying to cover all of the bases. Speaking of, what about the local law enforcement? The SCIA isn’t exactly someone’s first choice when it comes to these situations.”

“Do you think I’d trust our boneheaded sheriff to do anything right by the people in this town? When I realized something was wrong, I told him that Lyla had gone missing, and you know what he said?”

Ajay opened his mouth to reply, but Buzz didn’t wait for an answer before mockingly mimicking the town sheriff, paired with surprisingly exaggerated gestures. It was probably the most emotion Ajay had seen out of him so far. “‘Just wait a little bit, she’ll be back by morning,’ talking as if she had been abducted. Whether she was or not, his indifference and inaction is infuriating. I have no idea how he still has a job.”

Unsure of how to reply to that spiel, Ajay continued his questioning. “So, do you think it was aliens? I’ve heard abductions are pretty common around here.”

“Indeed they are. I don’t doubt the possibility that she was abducted, but I know the enemy very well. They don’t typically abduct women for over twenty four hours, give or take the rare cases where they have.” Buzz stated, his tone returning straight back to ‘serious’ in record time. “For that reason, if they did take her, I suspect that this was a targeted attack against me.”

During the General’s speech, Ajay had been taking plenty of notes. Once he was finished, he asked, “And that’s where the SCIA comes in, I take it?”

“Yes, though it’s not the only possibility on the table. There could’ve been foul play.” The General glowered as he spoke of such a dark possibility. “If that’s the case, I already have a few suspects in mind.”

“And that would be who, exactly?” Ajay asked, hiding his dread with a veneer of intrigue. Unfortunately, his voice was quickly drowned out by the whirring of helicopter blades as the General’s ‘carpool’ had finally arrived.

“That’s my cue to leave. We’ll talk more about this later.” The General spoke just loud enough to be heard as he marched off. “For now, I think you should start investigating the Smiths. I’m almost certain they’re a family of alien spies. Their house is up the road from here, at 101 Road to Nowhere. Best of luck to you.”

As the helicopter took off, Ajay jotted down the family’s name and the address, quickly realizing that he’s going to be living right next door to the suspects. That would make his investigation significantly easier.

Once the General had well and truly departed for work, Ajay got back into his car and drove off, passing by his new neighbors on the way to his own place, a little rental house at 91 Road to Nowhere.

It was a quaint little house, with some basic decoration and furniture. Ajay wasn’t about to complain, he never had an eye for interior decoration. He was just happy to be out of the sun.

More importantly, he was looking to get started on his investigation, the first suspects of which are, of course, his next-door neighbors, the Smith family.

<AN> Hey guys!! This is a fic based on prompts from @directorajay (ice skating date) and @babygara (protective!ajay). I thought I’d also explore a bit more of my MC (Graaaaaaace)’s insecurities, especially with this being her first relationship and all that. For my own attention-seeking purposes (lmao) I wanna tag the usual crew: @pixelburied @witchiegirl @lilmissperfectlyimperfect and @anlashokk. Hope y’all enjoy!! </AN> ------------ It was the last day of school before break. The school was on an early release schedule, and right around noon Grace found herself cleaning out her locker, sweeping stray pens and worksheets into her backpack in an unorganized fashion. She wrinkled her nose at the glitter dust that remained inside- how had it even gotten there??- but shrugged and dumped it all into her bag. She kept swearing to herself she’d be neater, but it never came to pass. Her bedroom still looked like a war zone (made worse by the continued presence of Biscuit, who had a ton of fur to shed), and her locker was the dumping ground for all academia related waste.

She hoisted her backpack straps onto her shoulders and closed the locker door to reveal a tall figure leaning on the locker next to hers, a messenger bag already thrown over his shoulder and a nervous sort of grin on his face. She jumped.

“Geez, Ajay, you scared me!”

He furrowed his eyebrows. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you, I just saw you in the hall and I wanted to spend some time with you before break starts. I’m going on that skiing trip with my parents, and we probably won’t get to see each other much before school starts again.”

Grace swallowed a few insecurities and reached for his hand, gently lacing their fingers together. They started walking slowly down the hallway, making for the doors that led to the parking lot.

“Don’t worry about it, you just caught me by surprise! And I know, it sucks about winter break, but I promise I’ll text you every day.”

“You can do me one better than that,” Ajay said suddenly, as if struck by a wave of inspiration. “How about going ice skating with me? This afternoon? There’s that outdoor rink down by Main Street that I’ve been wanting to check out.”

Grace turned her gaze to the ground, trying to hide the furious blush that loomed over her cheeks. Her breath caught in her throat just a bit, and the world seemed unreal for a moment before she came back to her senses, just enough to tease him.

“Ooh, are you asking m-me out on a date, Ajay?” she tried to tease, cursing herself under her breath for the stutter.

Ajay just laughed. “That was adorable, really. And you know what? Yes, I am asking you out on a date. Will you go out with me?” He bit his lower lip slightly and reached down to turn her head up to meet his gaze.

“I…” Grace froze for a moment, unused to the attention and feeling fire everywhere Ajay’s hand touched her face. She was thunderstruck, lost in his eyes for a moment. It only took a moment for his confidence to fade, just enough to make him back away from her slightly. She could tell he was trying to school his features into a neutral expression. He relinquished her hand and she snapped out of it as he started to talk.

“I mean, you don’t… we don’t have to I just… I thought…,” he stumbled over his words, clearly unnerved by her lack of response.

“No, no!” Grace nearly yelled, making him back up even more in shock. She reached for his hand again for emphasis.

“Of course I want to go out with you! I just... “ Her voice turned shy again. “Nobody’s ever asked me out before, I guess it was just a little surprising.”

Ajay’s entire body relaxed, the tension in his shoulders fading as quickly as it had come and his thumb starting to rub soothing circles on the back of her hand. He offered her a gentle smile.

“No worries. So, ice skating?”

“Of course.” she returned his smile, the nervous energy fleeing her body. What the heck was that for? she asked her brain. We know Ajay, we like Ajay, we trust Ajay! What are you doing freaking out like that?

As if Ajay knew what she was thinking, he started talking on cue.

“Sometimes our brains do the stupidest things, huh? Like once, I was in the middle of this test in bio…”

He kept telling his story as they left the warm building and walked into the cold air. Once they got to his car, he opened the passenger side door for her and closed it once she was settled in. A rush flowed through her at the kind gesture, and she stared down at her hands.

Gosh, how did I get this lucky?

Ajay got into the car on the driver’s side, turning the key to get the heating started. Grace tried her hardest not to shiver, but Ajay still noticed it out of the corner of his eye. Frowning, he reached for something in the backseat, and a moment later she felt a soft sweater fall into her lap. She pulled it on gratefully as he shifted gears into reverse to pull out of the parking lot.

“Make sure you buckle up,” he teased her. Rolling her eyes, she did. He pulled onto the main road and laid his left hand on the center console between the seats. She took it somewhat nervously, but was calmed by the smile that graced his face as he drove.

Not fifteen minutes later, they approached the rink. Being mid-afternoon it was mostly empty, but a few other teenagers they recognized skated around, as well as a cute-looking family. Ajay walked up to the booth and put down the money to pay for two skate rentals.

“Hey, you don’t have to pay for mine!” Grace tried to protest, but Ajay rolled his eyes and waved her off.

“Come on, I asked you out so I pay. You can pay on our next date, if it really means that much to you.”

Grace barely contained a smile at the words ‘next date’, and mock-sighed and nodded. The ticket attendant smiled at them and gave them skates.

“Wait-” Grace started, “How did you know my shoe size?”

“The play, remember? We couldn’t find any shoes that would fit you that looked period-appropriate in costume storage, so I sent Sydney out to get some. She must’ve texted me fifty times to confirm the size, I’d be more surprised if I’d forgotten it.”

Grace snorted softly, and sat down on a bench to start putting the skates on.

“So you sent poor Sydney on a shopping trip just for me?”

“Of course not. We also needed the rhinestones for Skye’s witch tiara and a belt for Clint’s trousers. Don’t go thinking you’re special,” he joked, finishing lacing up his first skate and moving on to the second. Grace had gotten stuck on just the laces of her first skate. There were so many holes to go through, and the intricacies had started to confuse her a bit. She struggled for a while, trying to figure it out, when Ajay’s hands took her skate into his lap and started lacing it up for her.

“Tell me if it’s too tight, okay?”

“You didn’t have to do that,” Grace said, almost reflexively. Ajay frowned and made eye contact with her, tying a neat double knot at the top of her first skate and moving to pick up her right foot.

“You really don’t get it, do you?”

“Get what?”

Ajay sighed, and silently finished tying her other skate. He stood up, causing her feet to drop to the ground, then offered a hand for her to pull herself up.

“Get what?” Grace asked again, a little more insistently.

Ajay rubbed his face in his hands.

“I like taking care of you, okay? I want to pay for your skates, and take you out on dates, and give you my jacket. It just seems like you’re uncomfortable with that.”

“No, Ajay…” she trailed off, unsure how to finish the sentence. She could see his eyes tracking hers, making note of every hesitation. He seemed to come to a conclusion, and she nearly felt a wall fly up between them as he forced himself into a neutral expression.

“Listen, it’s fine. I’ve probably been coming on too strong. Let’s just skate, okay?”

“Okay” she said softly, noticing the slight strain in his voice and the way he seemed determined not to meet her eyes. She followed him meekly to the rink, and once he got on the ice he took off, skating away quickly.

Left to her own thoughts, Grace felt along the wall as she tried to get her footing on the ice. She nearly had it when she was distracted by Ajay whizzing by her, a stony look on his face. Her mind started to wander, and then her foot slipped and she lost control. She fell on her back with an “oof” as the air rushed out of her lungs, leaving her a little dazed.

“Grace? Damnit, Grace?”

A voice sounded above her head as Ajay came into view, immediately dropping to his knees beside where she was laying. He put one hand under her head to support it, and another on her shoulder.

“God, Grace, are you okay? I’m so sorry, I should’ve been watching out for you. Do you think you’re hurt? That was a nasty fall, and they say that falling on your back is worse…”

She nodded along as he rambled, assuring him that she was fine and letting him scoop her back up. Lost in thought, she smiled at Ajay’s arm around her waist, a point of contact he insisted on keeping no matter where she went. After a few rounds of the rink, filled with Ajay’s fun facts about ice skating and plenty of laughs for the both of them, she asked if they could get off the rink for a second and go get something warm to drink.

He immediately agreed and led them to the gate. He directed her to find them a bench while he picked up two hot cocoas. He handed her a styrofoam cup after a few minutes in line, and sat down next to her, close but not as close as he might’ve. There was still a little tension between them, and Grace worked up all of her courage to be the one to break it. She poked his hand gently, causing him to look up at her.

“Listen, about earlier…”

He started to cut her off. “No, it’s completely my fault. I shouldn’t have pushed so hard, and I really shouldn’t have gotten so upset that you weren’t feeling the same way yet. I know I feel really strongly sometimes, and I should’ve been more chill about it. I’m sorry.”

Grace shook her head vehemently. “No, you don’t get it! Just listen to me, let me explain, and don’t try and say anything until I’m done talking! Okay?”

An amused look in his eye, Ajay made the gesture of zipping his lips shut. Grace took a deep breath, summoning more of her will to speak.

“I’ve never dated anybody before, never really even flirted with anyone before you. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. All I know is that the way you make me feel- when you pay for my skates or take my hand or give me your jacket- it makes me feel so special. It’s such a great feeling, but I’m not used to that. I was caught off guard a little bit by how much I’ve fallen for you in such a short time, and I kind of let it make me nervous. Then I remember how much you probably know what you’re doing and I get anxious thinking about how you might be judging me, and…” Grace stopped herself with a deep breath before continuing.

“I just need you to be patient with me, when I hesitate or when I freeze up or when I protest. Just for now, not forever. Because I have to come to terms with the idea that I really like you and you somehow really like me back, and it’s wonderful but also a little scary all at the same time. Is that… ok?” she bit her lip, not quite sure how he was going to react.

After just a moment, he smiled broadly, his eyes filled with affection for her. He laced their fingers together again.

“Of course I can do that. I just… I got inside my own head a little too much, too. My brain was trying to convince me that you didn’t like me anymore, but… you just said you did, and that’s incontrovertible fact. Hell, my heart’s pounding just because you said you really like me. So of course I can do that. Just don’t expect me to stop wanting to take care of you.”

“Alright, I can do that.” Grace smiled at him. Then, she stood up and reached an arm out. “Should we go back to the rink?”

“Absolutely.”

After returning their skates, they walked back to the car laughing as clouds started to build up, a gentle flurry of snowflakes landing on their heads and joined hands.
