Quote
People are surprised, they become indignant. They say: “How strange! But never mind—it’s Nazism, it will pass!” And they wait, and they hope; and they hide the truth from themselves, that it is barbarism, the supreme barbarism, the crowning barbarism that sums up all the daily barbarisms; that it is Nazism, yes, but that before they were its victims, they were its accomplices; that they tolerated that Nazism before it was inflicted on them, that they absolved it, shut their eyes to it, legitimized it, because, until then, it had been applied only to non-European peoples; that they have cultivated that Nazism, that they are responsible for it, and that before engulfing the whole edifice of Western, Christian civilization in its reddened waters, it oozes, seeps and trickles from every crack”

You should read ‘The King of Infinite Space’ by Lyndsay Faye. It’s a Hamlet retelling and it made me BAWL. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I was in, I was IN. I highly recommend
i must recommend aimé cesaire’s a tempest (une tempete) to you!!! v much recommended reading for anyone interested in the tempest as a colonial text - it looks at ariel as another victim of colonisation in a way i think they’re often passed over as being!! also the sea and the mirror by auden!! these are both tempest recs but. i love her. OH ALSO. it’s not a book or anything BUT the inside number 9 episode ‘the understudy’ (season 1 episode 5) i highly recommend. it is a version of macbeth where macbeth the play is being performed and the macbeth character is macbeth’s understudy and i LOVE IT. made me want to see a full length version of macbeth with that premise. it is not the best piece of tv ever and also check for trigger warnings but i LOVE IT.
i own the king of infinite space; i just have yet to get around to it! but i've heard some great things :3 and a tempest is already on my to-read list, but the sea and the mirror wasn't, so thank you so much! also this macbeth episode seems FASCINATING omg

We need an anti-coquette Aimé Césaire. Someone who's brave and sharp enough to trace the mid2020s far right fascist insurgency downstream from coquette like Cesaire did w colonialism and the 3rd reich. Discourses on Coquetteism

“Non-time imposes on time the tyranny of its spatiality: in every life there is a north and a south, and the orient and the occident. At the extreme limit or, at the least, at the crossroads, as one’s eyes fly over the seasons, there is the unequal struggle of life and death, of fervor and lucidity, albeit one of despair and collapse, the strength as well to face tomorrow. So goes every life. So goes this book, between sun and shadow, between mountain and mangrove, between dawn and dusk, stumbling and binary. Time also to settle the score with several fantasies and a few phantoms.
from “i, laminaria…” ― Aimé Césaire, The Complete Poetry of Aime Cesaire
