Acephalix — Theothanatology (20 Buck Spin)
Tumblr media
Theothanatology by Acephalix
For a certain sort of listener, few sounds emerging from the chaos of this year will be more satisfying than the opening 45 seconds of “Abyssal,” the third track on Acephalix’s Theothanatology. The guitars are ridiculously thick, blunt instruments that crunch and even djent without collapsing into cartoonishness. More impressive is the tune’s bottom end, which is as heavy and tough as a hippopotamus’s ass. And because it’s an Acephalix record, there are a lot of bottom ends to contend with (other tunes on the record are called “Innards of Divinity” and “Defecated Spirit.” Yep). Daniel Butler, vocalist and one of the principal intelligences powering the band’s transgressive imagination, growls, “Labyrinthine emptiness / The warmest absence holds / The abyss, primal violence / Abyss devouring me.” Being consumed by warm undersides, then evacuated into the void? Deafened by crusty death metal? Sounds like Acephalix is back.
The band’s return wasn’t a sure thing. Butler’s other project, the doomy death metal band Vastum, has been much more prolific over the past decade. And since releasing Decreation (2017), Acephalix’s lone record since the peerless Deathless Master (2012), the band has gone through significant changes in its line-up. David Benson still thumps the skins, but bassist Luca Indrio and guitar player Kyle House, both founding members, have departed. Erika Osterhout now fills out the rhythm section, and guitarist Adam Walker complements Adam Camara’s stringwork. The additions are more than solid: Acephalix sounds as massive as ever, and the band’s engagement with death metal’s gruesome, soggy weight is even more substantive.
That sensibility registers with particular force in “Defecated Spirit.” The riffing toggles between a rapid whirl and a staccato chug; in both cases, you can just about see the suppurating fatty tissue undulate. Butler does his characteristic thing: “Thanatos, death driven / Smashing life with death / Hammering excretion / Spirit turned to shit / Beatified, demonized / Defecated spirit.” Not really sure what “hammering excretion” might mean — is that something you do, or something that’s done to you? In any case, the vocalist’s obsessions are familiar: death, abjection, religious ritual blasphemously joined to libidinal perversity. Less typical is the nearly bouncy energy of Butler’s delivery. Coupled to the swagger of the band’s performance, there’s a strong suggestion that Acephalix is enjoying its current investigations of excrement and divinity.
But if Butler’s gruff growling guides the band toward fleshy, feculent fixations, the songs on Theothanatology are still clad in a crusty exoskeleton. The compositions are burly and brawny, and there’s more speed and burn than there is dizzy churn. If you can hang with the scatological playfulness (or, even better, if you are willing to wallow in it), Acephalix’s return will afford you some gruesome pleasures.

Acephalix wakes from five years in morbid repose with a new offering upon the glistening altar of flesh, a devastatingly tormented study on ‘Theothanatology’, the idea or belief that God is dead. Within this cerebrum shattering inquiry lies, as always, a primal spewing forth of vicious Death Metal malignity and bombraid hardcore dispersions. Across a decade and a half lifespan the evolution of Acephalix into the bludgeoning instrument of discord and dead faith displayed on ’Theothanatology’ has never felt so urgent. The crumbling siege-like mentality of modern life leaves no doubt God has left the building and Acephalix adeptly soundtrack the contradictions, atrocity and inner turmoil of such massive loss and decay. From the opening title track to closer ‘Atheonomist’ Acephalix is razor-focused on its greatest strengths, commanding the unambiguous sonic pulverizing of a bulldozer over the decimated skull pile of a once thriving civilization. Simultaneously more musically complex and savagely barbaric, ‘Theothanatology’ heralds a collapse already in motion. #acephalix #theothanatology #20buckspin #metal #death #deathmetal #sanfrancisco #california #vastum #metal #death #deathmetal #osdm #vinyl #vinyladdiction #vinyllover #vinylme #vinylpress #instavinyl #vinylporn #vinylnation #vinyljunkie #vinylwrap #vinylpossessed #vinyldecals #grindpromotionrecords (presso Grindpromotion Records Hq) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj-rg_joDVZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

2022 legmeghatározóbb albumai
Nincs kerek szám, nincs sorrend, csak idei albumok, amik nagy hatással voltak rám.
Tumblr media
Undeath: It's Time...To Rise From the Grave
Tumblr media
Municipal Waste: Electrified Brain
Tumblr media
Terror: Pain into Power
Tumblr media
Deadbody: The Requiem
Tumblr media
Static Abyss: Labrynth of Veins
Brutális a duójuk. (És már veszik fel a folytatást.)
Tumblr media
Acephalix: Theothanatology
Soha korábban nem hallottam róluk, de, ahogy lenni szokott, szembejöttek instastorykban, na meg Paul Riedl révén, akinek a párja, Erika Osterhout a basszerosuk. Azonnal felpakoltam az albumot a csekkolnivalók lejátszási listájára, aztán hanyatt estem tőle. Menetelő, döngölő, pattogó zene, hozzá tökéletesen passzoló köpködő, skandáló énekkel.
Tumblr media
Faceless Burial: At the Foothills of Deliration
Tribal Gaze: The Nine Choirs
Fleshrot: Unburied Corpse
Immolation: Acts of God
Mortuous: Upon Desolation
I AM: Eternal Steel
Cryptic Dissolution: Morbific Reminiscences In Physical Forms
Autopsy: Morbidity Triumphant
Fugitive: Maniac
Seep: Hymns to the Gore
ZOUS: No Ground to Give

Vastum — Inward to Gethsemane (20 Buck Spin)
Tumblr media
Vastum continues its campaign simultaneously to be the best sounding and most repulsive death metal act in America’s prodigious underground. Inward to Gethsemane is Vastum’s fifth LP, and it marks another stage in their refinement — which is a strange sort of word to use in relation to a band that likes to write tunes like “Orificial Purge” and “Gagging on a Gash.” But with each release, Vastum pulls its sound out of the muck a little more, paring away at its long roots in crust acts like Acephalix and Bruxers. Inward to Gethsemane is assertively a Metal ov Death record, wearing its suppurating, sadomasochistic raiment with grim, grand aggressivity.
Likely the most apprehensible shift in Vastum’s sound is Shelby Lermo’s more antic presence, providing demented guitar solos and generally making a perverse spectacle of himself. The time Lermo has put in with Ulthar, his other Bay-Area death metal project, seems to have had a palpable effect on his playing, which is suffused with a chaotic layer of Lovecraftian goo. The interplay between him and Leila Abdul-Rauf, Vastum’s other longtime guitarist (and vocal and creative complement to Daniel Butler), lights up this present collection with an appealingly turbulent intensity. And it all sounds…really good? The production (another sonically sharp record out of Greg Wilkinson’s Earhammer Studios) has just enough polish on it; every gurgle, blast and divebomb is rendered with lovingly punishing clarity.
Still, it’s a Vastum record, and the grostequerie will always outweigh any sheen or suggestion of aesthetically conventional luster. Thematically the band continues its exploration of the fleshy folds in which the erotic, the horrific and the abject greet one another with hilarity and fear. Check out these lyrics, from “Priapic Chasms”: “Piles of wank-refuse spew / Fill their inner cracks, asphyxiate / Fetid and foul fumes steam…” Or this, from the appropriately titled “Vomitous”: “Sprawling, can’t stop subjecting myself to your finger inside my eye / Feeling emetic, in distress, can’t stop vomiting / Puke your naked I in the agony garden.” Gross, for sure, but always with purpose. Vastum takes death metal’s sometimes glib celebrations of rotten, meaty pleasures and ecstatic violence seriously, as philosophical positions to be articulated, with ruthless thoroughness.
The album title announces that intent, in ways that exceed metal’s long-running practice of needling the Christians. Appropriate to the band’s conceptual rigor, Gethsemane’s biblical import is summoned with more than parodic impulse. A long night of the soul, suffering over the choice to annihilate the self, willfully, methodically, agonizingly? That’s right in Vastum’s wheelhouse. If the band can transgress some taboos and inflict some pain along the way, even better. Sound like fun? Your problems are my problems. We should likely seek help — but meanwhile, let’s spin this record a bunch.
