The Married Women star will end 2022 with a bang, as she will be seen with Naveen Kasturia, Abhay Mahajan and Arunabh Kumar in Pitcher Season 2. While interacting with DNA India, Ridhi opened up about working with SRK and Salman. When asked to point out a quality that specifies their personality, Ridhi said, 

"They (SRK and Salman) are different people, but one quality that is common between them is the humility that they carry. When it comes to craft, work ethics, and being on sets, they are very humble. I was amazed by the balance they keep between 'action' and 'cut.'"

Dogra went on to praise Shah Rukh, and she stated that for her, SRK was more than just a 'superstar.' "Shah Rukh is from Delhi, so I get this Delhi wala vibe with him." Ridhi also hails from the capital, so she was proud to hang around with a Delhite, "I felt very comfortable with him, kyuki woh Delhi se hai, aur unka humour bhi Delhi ka hai. I also told him, 'I will not call you Shah Rukh sir, for me you are Shah Rukh.'" Ridhi revealed. The Asur actor further added, "The humility factor from them, is something that should be learnt. It is something to be remembered." Ridhi further summarised SRK's nature by saying that he doesn't take himself too seriously, but he does consider his art very seriously.

Hutatma Review

In South Mumbai, in the district of Fort, is a square officially named Hutatma Chowk, which houses the famous Flora Fountain and a statue of a martyr with a flame that stands right beside it. The square was earlier known by the name Flora Fountain, as that monument was an integral part of that area, but was changed to Hutatma Chowk, translated as Martyr’s Square, in 1961, five years after hundreds of members of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti were injured and lost their lives, as the police opened fire on their peaceful demonstration. For those that don’t know much about the history of Maharashtra, this organization was composed of Marathi commoners that were against Bombay becoming a city state like Delhi and advocated for a separate Marathi-speaking state that included Bombay. This is the setting for the new Zee5 web series, Hutatma, which is based off of a Marathi novel of the same name, written by Meena Deshpande. Though the setting is real, the characters are fictional. It begins with the bloody shootout that took lives of many and chronicles the journey of one young woman, Vidyut Sawant (Anjali Patil), who gets involved in the politics of “United Maharashtra” after her father is killed in the protest at the fountain, on his way home from work.

From a technical standpoint, the show is fantastic in its production value. It is not easy to recreate India in the 1950s. However, the makers of Hutatma have been very careful in each detail, from the costumes to the set design. The cinematography is brilliant, especially when it comes to portraying Vidyut on screen. The way in which the camera lingers on her even as other characters in the scene are speaking, allows the audience to see her reaction, exposing us to the many different layers of her character.

The first season primarily deals with Vidyut’s internal issues and vulnerabilities as she attempts to come to terms with her father’s death and wanders across the various groups in the hope that one of them will be suitable for her goals. She is naïve and young, and makes many mistakes in her quest for justice. By the second season, she is firm in her path and has transitioned from a lost, grief-stricken girl, into a manipulative and determined woman that will go to any extent to avenge her father’s death even if that means making enemies of people who were once her friends. Anjlai Patil breathes life into this character. The way she portrays the layers and complexities of this character is remarkable. Her role is reminiscent of a character, Durga, that she had played in the 2013 film, Naa Bangaaru Talli. Though the situations and forces around her are different, both Vidyut and Durga go through a similar journey of an innocent girl pushed into a dark world.

The writing and direction of the first season are concise and gripping. Though the focus is primarily on Vidyut’s journey, the show introduces many other characters to establish the nature of the movement, and display the different facets to the struggle. It is heavily biased towards the Marathi people, and most of the narrative is told from their perspective. However, it doesn’t show them purely as victims and heroes. There are people like Malini Tai (Ashwini Kalsekar) and Bhimabai (Chhaya Kadam) who believe in non-violent, peaceful protests. There are those like Abhay (Vaibhav Tatwawaadi) and his communist group, who use violence for their means but only to the extent of scaring the government, not hurting any one of them. And there are those like Guru (Nitin Bhajan), who use bombs and guns and will go to any extent to achieve their goals, even if it means attempting to kill the Prime Minister.  While the audience is made sympathetic towards all these characters, especially since there are very few non-Marathi characters in the show, they are also exposed to the flaws that make these characters human.

In the second season, the writing is weaker. Since the characters have already been established, this season has to develop the character arcs. However, except for Vidyut and Abhay, the remaining characters are given less importance, and the new characters that are introduced are not as interesting as the characters from the first season. Therefore, though the plot still remains intriguing, there are many scenes, especially the ones that don’t have Vidyut or Abhay, that lag. There are also many loopholes in the story towards the end of the season, such as Leela’s motivations, or how certain characters knew secrets that they shouldn’t have known. Hopefully, a third season will shed some light on these plot points.

Despite the flaws in the storytelling of the second season, Hutatma is still one of the best web series to come out of India. Filled with tremendous performances, and an exciting storyline, not only is it extremely engaging, but it is also informative for those that don’t have much knowledge of the United Maharashtra movement in 1950s India.
