Japanese-occupied Micronesia during the Japanese Mandate (unlikely)

Japanese-occupied Micronesia during present day (slightly more likely...but why)

Okinawa during present day (more likely than either of those but kind of tame)

Okinawa during present day but it’s about Japanese imperialism (less likely AND less tame)

Okinawa during the Japanese Mandate of Micronesia (NOW we’re cooking and also I’d read that for the Taisho-vibes)

Guano Islands (unhinged but it explains where the money is from)

any of the other numerous islands in Southeast Asia that Japan invaded during WWII (unlikely, unless Araki has gone really wild)

the above but during present day (more likely...but why)

the above during present day...but it’s about the continuing legacies of Japanese imperialism (again, I would read this, but would Araki write it?  probably not)

Hawai’i during present day (why)

Hawai’i but the main JoJo is there to work on the sugar plantations (...I would read this but also. why)

I don’t know if there’s a proper name for this trope, but I find the translation of very obviously fantasy elements to a modern AU when the author wants to keep the same level of drama while also making the event deeply mundane kind of inherently hilarious

his soul was stolen? no, no, it was his credit card that was stolen, tragically

he betrayed and murdered his dear friend using dark magic? no, it was...it was insurance fraud. really, really bad insurance fraud, and his dear friend was the insurance broker.

he gave magical secrets to the enemy? no, you misunderstand, he plagiarized part of his doctoral thesis, very tragic

he died? no, no, he moved across the country and despite this being a modern AU he forgot that all modern telecommunications exist

his husband was killed by magical assassins? no, it wasn’t assassins, it was actually just a mugging. he still died tho

the issue with writing anything with massive digressions is that Shrine AU is still Forbidden and Nagoya AU appeals to me and only me

The other day I was joking with a friend that we should only have Izumo-based fanfic tropes from now on except I wasn’t joking--I was deadly serious and I’m here, now, bringing Izumo AUs to your computer screens:

Person A is the head priest of Izumo.  Person B is the architect who insists on rebuilding the shrine even taller.

Person A is the kami of a local enmusubi shrine who is finally going to Izumo for the big yearly meeting.  Person B is a parishioner of the shrine who is so serious about getting a partner (and also pissed that the kami hasn’t done their frickin’ job yet) that they have traveled all the way to Izumo to petition during Kannazuki.

VARIATION ON THE ABOVE: Person C is another kami who thinks it would be really funny to enmusubi the two of them.  

OT3 OPTION: Person C winds up falling in love with both of them while trying to get them together.

Person A is a priest at Izumo.  Person B is a priest at Ise.  Star-crossed love.

HARD MODE: the above except it’s set during the Pantheon Debate.
