hi! I love your work so much!! I recently bought stages of rot and its so good i bring it with me everywhere.

Can I ask how you got soo good at drawing faces? I love how grounded in reality and dimensional they look! your work is phenomenal !

used to draw a lot of people on the subway when I lived in stockholm, I think that helped? like take a sketchbook & sit down in some busy place if you live in a large-ish & somewhat diverse city. I'm trying to keep up this habit though lately it's been a lot of plants (because it's meditative) and buildings (something I need to practise more, always).

also, 'vintage anime/manga nose rendering' is an invaluable skill imo. like the shaded side area, or the thing say otomo or shirow does of shading or adding a lil 'blush' on the upper side of the nose. very useful

(schjerfbeck, the 'og'. exquisite nose shadow + blush, that stuff adds a lot when doing stylised/simplified faces)

ach, sure, let me find them...

^^this is the person who drew it, though they ship reigen and mob together.... along with incest.. lame...

it doesn't follow the guides. but i can see why and how some would think its real

then there's this one. it's insane how so many ppl think its official because if you were a ONE appreciator, you'd notice how the suit is cold gray while ONE always draw's reigen's suit with a warm gray. and the outlines.... he's never used a brush like that.... and his lines are usually thin(ner) uwahh.... unfortunately i was unable to find a source... i've failed the original artist by not crediting them...

will update the post when i find them :^)

what's the story behind hunin and mugin? how did you come to own them?

I had a rescue crow many years ago that made me fall in love with corvids, so I've tried to be an advocate for them since then. I wanted to find a pair of crows or ravens, so I found Brian Blazer, who is a responsible and knowledgeable corvid breeder in Alabama. I was on a waiting list for 3 years before they traveled by plane over to me in Washington. Incidentally, they arrived at midnight on a rainy night because their flight was delayed... I suppose I should have expected as much from a couple of traveling death omens.

Hugin is a 5-year-old male and Munin is a 1-year-old female. I got them when Munin was about 12 weeks old. Hugin was sent to me with Munin because Brian thought they would bond with each other well, and I think he was right. In the wild, it is common for males to be a little older than females when they form pairs.

They are African ravens because that makes them not native to the US, and therefore legal to keep without a permit almost everywhere in the US.

Munin was young enough for me to train to go out into the city safely, so she has been acting as an ambassador for her kind. I can probably train Hugin to go out with us as well, but that will take more time, and I'm not sure if he will learn to enjoy outings... we'll see. For now he flies around with Munin in our living room or his aviary.

I took a while to answer this question because I was preparing for a trip, so thanks for your patience as well as the ask! I love talking about my birds. :)

...draw the gray tones on a 'multiply' or 'darker colour' layer, the 'add grain' –

go to image > adjustments > black and white, set all sliders to either black or white, like such –

and there you go. you can set the grain + B&W up as an 'action' so you don't have to do it over and over

Where do you stand on the "did darkling care at all about grisha by the time of canon" thing?

I think he cared very much about Grisha as a whole (inasmuch as he is capable of caring about anything by the time canon rolls around — thanks a lot, four-hundred-year-long depression!!) and very little about individual Grisha. He was taking the immortal long view, and would have been willing to sacrifice as many Grisha (and otkazat'sya) as he had to if it meant that Grisha would be safe going forward.

If he didn't care at all about Grisha, I think he would have found himself a much easier job sometime in the last three or four centuries. From an authorial intent point of view, I can't imagine Bardugo published Demon in the Wood believing that she'd written him as having done a 180 from that perspective by the beginning of Shadow and Bone.

I don't think his feelings about Grisha are uncomplicated though — some of his ruthlessness in protecting Grisha is a response to the impulse of Grisha to sacrifice him to protect themselves. He's constantly aware that if he had less power (both magical and political) (and maybe less immortality, depending on how you read that), that he would have been reduced to bones around someone's wrist many lifetimes ago
