Thoughts on Tim Bradford

I was thinking about some of the things we've seen about Tim over the years and boy, is it now making so much more sense. I know a lot of this has already been meta'd and have been very eloquently said. But I just needed to put my two cents in.

Let's start with what Isabelle said to Tim in 1x12. She never felt like she measured up to Tim because he saw things so black and white. Tim had no idea that she felt that way and never thought that about her. And I've always thought she was wrong and was just projecting her own sense of failure onto him. But now I'm re-thinking that stance. We know from 4x19 and 4x20 that Tim was involved in black ops when he was in Afghanistan. His whole "Reaper" persona is obviously from that time in his service. We know from so many things that have come out in the last couple of decades that those involved in those types of operations often blurred the lines of legal and moral. I think that once he returned stateside that his rigid moral code was part of how he dealt with his PTSD. He probably didn't even realize he was going that far. Think about it, he went from black ops to being "Eagle-eye", the cop that took every order literally and got his shop tagged while standing there. Someone who was involved in off book missions wouldn't naturally be that rigid. I think it was easy to fall back into that type of mindset because of his childhood. I'm sure he needed to have every duck in a row when he was younger to make sure he never did anything to set his dad off. But having seen and done some bad things in the midst of war, Tim had to default back to this to be able to integrate back into society. He's often scorned psychology over the years. So I imagine he dealt with the trauma of war on his own by becoming that black and white guy that Isabelle was talking about. It was only after Lucy entered his life and started challenging him to be a better man that he started to see those shades of grey that life is all about. Remember in 5x17 when he showed mercy to the Make a Dream kid's dad? Season 1 Tim would never. He even admitted that Lucy was a good influence. Chances are he would have mellowed over time, but I believe he still would have had a certain amount of rigidity. That's why he told Isabelle in 5x20 that Lucy was different. She showed him that he had to readjust his mindset to be a better man.

Another thing that struck me is how he is basically treating Lucy like his boot or aide right now. If it was Angela that knew something was up I could totally see it. He could possibly blow up her life and it wouldn't be worth it. She is his best friend, but not his life partner. I could even see it if this had happened circa 5x6 or 5x7 when Chenford was trying to find their way back to friendship. But things have changed. I know that "fierce protector" Tim will do anything to protect the people he loves. I mean he offered to take the fall for falsifying those after action reports so that his friend with a family wouldn't be affected. But Lucy is not a friend, not an old Army buddy or his boot or aide. She is the most important person in his life. The reason he has begun to heal from all of the trauma he has had to face. He can't hide this from her. I am hoping that he realizes that next episode. Cause as juicy as this angst is, I'm ready for it to be over.

One last thing, as hard as it is to watch them fighting, it's what Chenford needs. I think this is going to bring so much to the surface that they need to face. Now Lucy is getting a taste of what being the person left at home feels like when their partner is UC. I think Lucy is going to take Tim to task for the whole going behind her back with Grey thing. And they both are going to have to deal with their communication issues. I feel like they are only going to come out of this stronger.

Dr StrangeVale or: How I learned to stop worrying and love Hiram’s bomb

Oh, Rivervale, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways!

1. Archie’s dead

2. There are two Jugheads

3. General wackiness

4. Archie’s dead

5. No s5 misery

6. Obligatory midseason Bughead make-out.

7. Did I mention that Archie’s dead?

8. (Somewhat failed) Attempt at a better plotted mini-arc

9. Meta references (with various degrees of success)

10. Laughing my head off at Rivervale’s 6x5 ‘big bad’ (see #9).

My enjoyment of s6a has been inversely proportional to the wretchedness that was s5. That is to say, if s5 hadn’t been such a miserable miserable thing, maybe I’d be less happy with Riverdale’s 5ep-event. But s5 was what it was, so here we are!

#1, 4 & 7: Listen, it’s exhausting to watch the writers continuously lauding Archie’s most problematic behaviour as the best and purest thing that has ever happened this side of Sweetwater, in an effort to counterbalance how unimportant his storylines are in the bigger narrative of each episode. It’s also hilarious how they are completely aware of the fact and yet not interested in changing it because of how well the A plot mystery/Bughead combo works. (Plus it allows them to put Archie in more inconsequential shirtless/fighting scenes). It has been such a delight not to have Archie on my screen for so long!

#2: Does this really need an explanation? Forsythe Pendleton Jones III is half the reason I watch Riverdale. In Rivervale he’s double the reason!

#3 & 5: The best Riverdale is the craziest Riverdale. Did anyone say The Great Blooper Birthday Party / Chickles Wedding Extravaganza, complete with Archie and Kevin (and his trusty machete) fighting convicts in atmospheric lighting during Parents Night at RHS while Jughead’s tripping maple mushroom balls in the Bunker in 5x10? Yes, please! These writers have not the range to write serious dialogue or keep pace. They’re so much better when everything is over the top. Which, yes, is a conscious decision on their part but also a convenient one: mistakes and weaknesses can be better hidden in a fast-paced piece for a big orchestra than in a slow duet. And the Allegro is always more fun than the Lento.

#6: Is there anyone left watching for the plot? Did s5 even have one?! If anything, s6a exists solely on the premise of no overall narrative: each episode is more or less self-contained and the event’s “arc” starts and begins with ep5. In spite of the writers insisting that everything is in canon [sic] i.e. in continuity, it really isn’t, as we’re about to go back to 5x19, as expected by everyone in the fandom. 5x19 aired on Oct. 6th 2021. That plot will continue in 6x6, which will air on March 6th 2022. And only then, will the viewers know how to interpret what happened from 5x14 onwards (or whether to completely discard those storylines, because things simply changed/moved on).

The show currently survives because of the ships. The couples (new and old) have been the focus of every teaser for s5 and s6.

Case in point: the obligatory midseason Bughead make-out scene: first in s5 (a hallucination) then in s6 (a parallel universe). If it’s not real, what’s the purpose? The writers know very well what attracts an audience. It’s the ships. Specific ships.

#8: The format of s6a (5-ep event, a separate universe, mostly self-contained episodes, knowledge of when exactly the hiatus will happen) is more concise.

The writers don’t have to worry about arcs and overall narratives. In fact, there aren’t any.

That culmination of the battle between evil and good (apparently moved to 6b?)? Nothing has pointed towards it so far (that triple explicit reference in 6x3 bore no consequences for that episode’s plot or the next one’s).

The Jughead multiverse thing that supposedly explains the whole 5ep-event? It’s not a real arc: it hasn’t happened yet. It begins and ends in 6x5. The previous episodes can stand on their own in their little Rivervale world without it.

(At the same time, because there are limits to the Riverdale writers’ abilities, this format has led to a much slower pace. The need for a new narrative premise for each episode combined with the writers’ preference for exposition means that not a lot happens in s6a. The action is minimal compared to other seasons.)

#9 & 10: The meta references are hilarious. Making things literal (Archie’s heart) or symbolical (Jughead’s typewriter/closed-in room of ships and bottles) but in that Riverdale in-your-face fashion is actually entertaining. Archie’s motivation in 6x5 is the meta-est thing these writers have ever done! Embracing s6’s format in order to play out as many scenarios as possible without consequences is objectively smart and would have pleased the fans more, had Riverdale not already made it its m.o. to drop plots left and right.

Everything is already meaningless in Riverdale: Hiram is used for comedic relief but then he’s a super villain again. Pop Tate’s retirement is such an important event that it brings the core four together but then he’s back and working. Betty stresses so much over Jughead not getting into college that she cheats on him but later on becomes fwb with the high-school drop-out …

At least in Rivervale, it’s justified!

My theories on the Allegra and Nash scene is either she goes behind Iris back to investigate what’s going on with Nash or Nash needs her meta powers for something he’s looking into in those tunnels so he goes to her for help. Just some ideas. We have two whole weeks after 6x5 to hear fans bitch & complain about it regardless since the Flash will take a one week break before coming back. Which means 6x6 doesn’t air until 11/19. Yeah! 🙄

Oh joy, a week break also means that info for episode 7 will take a little longer to come out than it’s been coming for the other episodes. That’ll be another fun thing to see people complain about.

No último final de semana, 25 e 26 de Maio, aconteceu a 2ª edição do Torneio Mitsumori de Softbol Universitário. A Unicamp, foi a grande campeã, ao bater por 7 a 2 a Medicina Usp na grande final da Chave Ouro. A Poli USP foi à campeã da chave prata e a Farmácia USP a campeã da Chave Bronze.

Esta segunda edição contou com a participação de 11 equipes: FEAmor, Gecebs, Farmácia USP, ImeOdonto USP, FEA, Medicina USP, Unicamp, Poli USP, Cooper Ladies, SanFran e Medicina Paulista (Unifesp).

Para chegar a grande final, a Unicamp, que estava na Chave 3, no sábado, venceu a Unifesp por 18 a 1 e a SanFran por 17 a 1. No domingo, pela semifinal, nova venceu a Unifesp por 12 a 2 e ficou no aguardo de sua adversária.

A Medicina USP, estava na chave 2, bateu a FEAmor por 15 a 0 e Sub15 do Gecebs por 19 a 3. No domingo, pela outra semifinal, fez uma partida disputada contra a FEA USP e garantiu sua vaga na final.

Na disputa pela 3ª colocação, a FEA venceu a Unifesp por 12 a 2. Na partida do título, a Unicamp bateu a Medicina USP por 7 a 2. A Poli foi campeã da chave prata e a Farma USP campeã da chave bronze.

O Torneio foi criado para homenagear o grande treinador Mitsumori, que foi treinador do time da Faculdade de Economia e Administração da USP e que com seu conhecimento técnico, perseverança e personalidade única, ajudou a transformar potenciais em pontos fortes e a alcançar sonhos tanto do time de Softbol como o de Beisebol da FEA.
