September Round Up

So I got sick and had a week or so where I didn’t read. That has put a serious damper on my goal to read 100 books this year. It’s still possible, but definitely going to be a struggle. Especially if I have any more slumps.

Books 57 through 63. Please note there may be spoilers ahead. You've been warned.

57: Monsters & Muses: Sweet Sin by Sav R. Miller This was a prequel to Promises and Pomegranates. It’s not necessary, but I’m glad I read it because P&P jumps right into the story and I think it would have taken a minute to figure out what was going on. I did enjoy this and I feel like it gave me a better sense of who the characters are and I was able to enjoy P&P more because of it.

58: Monsters & Muses: Promises and Pomegranates by Sav R. Miller I don’t know what to say. I feel like just when I had the story figured out, something changed. It was predictable, but not at the same time. Part of my problem is probably that I read it so damn fast and then jumped straight into another book. I’m planning to read the rest of the series though. I think I read it too fast and didn’t let myself digest what was happening. I may go back and read it again. I did enjoy this book. I do know that. Enough so that, like I said, I’m going to read the rest of the series. I just can’t recall enough of what happened to talk about it.

59: Fight or Flight by Samantha Young I really enjoyed this book. Fell in love with the characters. It’s an enemies to lovers, but the transition was different than I was expecting. They went from enemies to benefits with a small friendship, then to lovers. Or maybe that’s how they all progress. Enemies to friends to lovers. I don’t know. Maybe I pay more attention to some than others. Anyway, I thought this one was super cute. I LOVED how he and his brother just sprang into action when her friend was in trouble. Like no questions asked, even thought the brother was mad, he helped.❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰

60: Kingdom of the Wicked by Keri Maniscalco I love Emilia and Wrath so much. I’ve already read this book, but with Kingdom of the Feared coming out I had to re-read it. Totally forgot for some reason that her sister wasn’t really dead 😅😅😅

61: Kingdom of the Cursed by Keri Maniscalco Again, I’ve already read this one too. Just a re-read for the next book.

62: Burdens We Carry by Dana Isaly This is in Dana Isaly’s One Night Series. I’ve read the first two and both were great, and this one did not disappoint either. Not gonna lie, I read the first one because tik tok raved about it and it’s spice level. I wasn’t all that impressed by it, but I stayed for the story. Short and sweet. I wasn’t expecting there to be that good of a story in such a steamy book, but I was pleasantly surprised. So I read the second one and it did not disappoint. So then of course I was hooked and had to read the next one as well. 

63: Kingdom of the Feared by Keri Maniscalco I have mixed feelings about this one. I love Emilia and Wrath and I’ve enjoyed their story so much, but there were parts of this book that were kind of a let down. I’ll make a separate post with my thoughts once I collect them all. I’m still sorting through the aftermath. I have to figure out if my feelings are because of the story or because of my disappointment or both.

I admit I personally prefer showing characters interact with each other and allowing their interaction to be interpreted as either romantic, platonic, or even nothing at all.

I think this approach makes relationships less framed by "signpost cues" of friendship/attraction/love (not that I do not enjoy seeing these either). I think it leaves more room for interesting human interactions, independent of what expectations the reader has for the two characters. Some people seem to search for actions like kissing, hugging, confessions, in order to confirm whether something was supposed to be romantic or not. But then, the absence of such cues make them arrive at conclusions that ignore other forms of relationship-building interactions all together :(

So for me, it's Schroedinger's character relationships, with a generous amount of "the true value of this relationship is the collection of interactions we have made along the way" and it doesn't need a name. So with that out of the way:
