Heartstopper Season 2
Tumblr media
Season 2 of Heartstopper just came out a few weeks ago and it's been all I can think about. I've watched it twice now and I've been listening to the music from this season repeatedly. I just can't get over how good it is, which is why I am now writing about this post.
So to recap, the season starts off with Charlie and Nick being all happy and in love. Nick is worried about coming out to his friends and Charlie is doing his best to stay patient and supportive. Elle and Tao like each other but are afraid of affecting their friendship. Imogen is into Ben and Tara and Darcy are as strong as ever. Everyone seems happy and everyone is excited about the upcoming class trip to Paris.
Quickly into the first episode Nick is put into a different class to prepare for the upcoming GCSEs, which cuts down time to spend with Charlie. Then we find out that Charlie's not doing well in school and gets grounded because of it, cutting their time down even more. However, the couple starts finding more creative ways to see each other until they finally take off for Paris.
Episodes 4-6 all take place in Paris and are by far some of the best episodes in the show. Since the beginning, the creators drop hints at Charlie's complicated relationship with food, but this doesn't really start to get further explored until episodes 4 and 5. Charlie refuses to eat multiple times in episode 4 to the point that Nick calls him out on it. Then in episode 5, he passes out from lack of energy due to not eating enough. When this happens Nick really gets concerned and starts to keep a closer eye on Charlie's eating habits.
While all of this is going on, Imogen and Ben get together and break up, Elle and Tao kiss, and Tara tells Darcy she loves her, but Darcy doesn't say it back. It's an eventful couple of episodes that bleed into an even more dramatic episode 6 where Nick and Charlie briefly visit Nick's dad and the gang celebrates Tara's birthday with a surprise party and a game of truth or dare that ends up going south.
As everyone travels back to England, tension rests in the characters as they have time to themselves. Upon returning, Elle finds out she made it into the Lambert Art School she applied to. The gang prepares for prom and Charlie and Nick prepare to have dinner with their families. After Nick's brother makes a fuss over Nick's relationship with Charlie at dinner, Nick comes out to his dad and proceeds to call his dad and brother out for being crappy to him. The episode ends with Nick being reminded of Charlie's problems with food once again after noticing that he didn't eat much at the family dinner. Then we see Darcy storm out of her abusive home after getting a first taste of what her home life is really like.
The season finale follows up on all the issues in the characters lives, but starts with Nick coming out on Instagram. The whole episode is the day of prom following Nick coming out with Elle and Tao happily together before shifting to show Tara struggling to put prom together. Darcy is MIA, which leads Tara to call on her friends for help. The group spends the day getting ready for prom and the episode finishes off with them all going to Nick's house afterwards, Darcy reuniting with them and opening up to Tara, and Charlie opening up to Nick about what it was really like for him facing the bullies.
After finishing season 2 again, I see so many ways the next season could go and I'm so excited. From the beginning, this series has done a great job of showing representation and the longer the series continues, the more aspects of various problems are shown. From LGBTQ+ to abuse to eating disorders, Heartstopper does an excellent job of making anyone who watches this show feel seen. Every emotion, every conversation, every relationship, and every character is unique in some way and yet they blend together perfectly. I watch Heartstopper and I instantly feel happier, but at the same time, they cover such hard topics just in a lighter way.
I personally love watching shows with more drama to them, but I have a limit and shows like Grey's Anatomy or even The Vampire Diaries at times get a little too much for me to handle so a show like Heartstopper is perfect. I get drawn in and sometimes I will be on the edge of my seat, but I'm not balling my eyes out. I like a lighter drama or as a friend of mine once said "upbeat depression."
I will give Heartstopper season 2 a 10/10 mostly because I never immediately rewatch something after I just finished it, but this season really was just that good. I know I will be thinking about this season for a long time and already cannot wait for season 3 to come out.

“I had...HAVE a mental illness.”
Charlie Spring (Heartstopper Ch. 6)
If it wasn’t obvious, I love Heartstopper. I was introduced to it last year through someone on a Asexual Discord I’m in. I love everything about it. I also love the Alice Oseman universe. I’ll also be honest by saying I had trouble choosing a quote from it, which is I haven’t talked about it.
I love Heartstopper not just because it’s a fantastic representation of queer people and queer relationships, but also because it has great representation of mental illness. It’s one of the few pieces of media that feels real.
I’ll talk about the queer representation in a future post. I really want to focus on Charlie’s mental illness and its portrayal.
First of all, it’s not something that comes out of the blue. It’s built up in the background until it becomes the main focus. Charlie isn’t finishing his food. I know I didn’t catch on to it until it was shown. Nick didn’t catch on to it either until the Paris trip. This even extends to the TV show. We see Charlie not eating or finishing his meals. It’s going to hurt a lot more in Seasons 2 and 3 when it becomes the main focus because we saw it building in season 1.
We also see the difficulties in just reaching out. Charlie felt he could only trust Nick, but Nick needed to face the fact that he cannot fix it, nor should he be expected to. Charlie recognized this when Nick told him outright. That letter still hurts to read. Charlie made an appointment with a therapist, but it wasn’t until months away very much so like in real life. Charlie gets worse because of this leading him to go into a psychiatric hospital. I cannot speak from experience from this, but I had a friend who can, and they’ve said it felt genuine. I cannot really expand on this because I’m not going to press my friend for answers.
Finally, that quote. Mental illnesses do not go away. However, they can become manageable. This is exactly why Turtles All the Way Down made me so emotional because it’s something I’ve had difficulties with. We see it in Heartstopper as well. Some days are great, but other days it gets to us. There’s not a lot we can do those days other than try to manage it.
I don’t know if I’m alone (well I do know I’m not), but I really hate pieces of media that make mental illnesses as something to overcome and defeat rather than manage. There is no cure to depression and anxiety like there is for athlete’s foot. We can treat it but even then there is no one size fits all treatments like there is for other diseases.

11/11/11 Tag Game! Round 3
I think it’s round 3? Maybe 4? Who cares! Fun times ahead!
Big thank you to @writeouswriter for the tag! Sorry for the huge delay, brains are dumb sometimes. 💜
Bilbo Taggins: @moonbeam-muse @quilloftheclouds @vhum @nerocael @pantheion @ink-flavored @queen-of-ice101 @elliswriting @witchywrite @elisabethrosewrites @capricious-writes
rules: answer 11 questions, ask 11 questions, tag 11 people!
My Questions:
What’s your favorite snack?
What’s your personal theme song?
Who would be your superhero sidekick? What are your names/uniforms/powers/aesthetic(s)?
If you could have one author/writer give you advice on something in your story, who would it be and what would you ask?
Which of your characters has changed the most from your initial concept of them?
What’s your favorite title? And how do you title your own stories?
What kind of pens do you like?
How willing are you to change/tweak parts of your stories based on feedback you receive anonymously or from a respected friend?
What interests/fascinates you about the setting(s) you chose for your WIP(s)?
Of what you’ve written so far, what is your favorite scene/part?
What do you love about stories?
1. What’s the weirdest thing you were ever inspired by for one of your WIPs?
Most of my story inspirations are super out there. I’ve been inspired by taking a history test, this video of Sebastian Stan, cool body paint art, the blue colander in my kitchen, Hubble’s Law, and this song, to name a few.
2. Do any of your OCs have famous face claims? If so, who are they?
I don’t really like doing face claims for my characters. I like people to imagine what they look like themselves. (Also, I never have one set appearance for anyone. Everyone’s looks are constantly changing until the final draft. And even then, I interpret them differently depending on how I’m reading the story at the time.)
Harry reminds me of Ming-Na Wen, though.
3. What’s your favourite season and why?
FALL. Or Autumn, whatever. The colors, the crunchy leaves, the scarves, the sweaters, the coziness. When it’s just cool enough to bust out my sweater collection and my boots. I live in the desert and fall is my favorite month of the year.
4. Do you have any superstitions?
My mom won’t throw away pictures (and as a result, I won’t, either). Don’t keep fortune cookie fortunes in the car. Spill salt, throw it over your shoulder (not because Devil things, but for Reasons). Knock on wood (if no wood is available, I use my head). The “Scottish Play” theatre thing. Respect the ghost light and the theatre ghosts. No whistling in the theatre. Actually, most of mine are theatre-based now that I think about it...
Most of my friends kiss the roof of their car when they go through a yellow light.
5. Rural, suburbs, city, in which do you live and which do you most often write about?
I live in a city! I don’t enjoy this city too much, though. Hopefully I’ll be moving to an even bigger city soon! This is an interesting question because my stories are often set in single locations, like single rooms and fire escapes and stuff. I think it’s an even split between rural towns and cities.
6. What’s your favourite book series?
The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher! And The Gentleman’s Guide / Montague Siblings duology!
7. Is there a book/series that ever left you intensely disappointed? (Or one that left you pleasantly surprised?)
Most of what I read in college, HA. The only book I remember putting down was Replay by Sharon Creech. I was like 10 when I tried to read it.
The most a book has surprised me is The Secret Loves of Geek Girls. I thought it’d be a cool look at fandom and stuff, but NOPE, surprise, it’s a nonfiction collection by a bunch of badass ladies in the geek industry (comics, movies, fanfic, writers, tv, etc.) about love and life. It’s AMAZING. Please, for the love of all that is holy, go read it. I recommend it to everyone. There are three anthologies and they’re all amazing.
Here’s a link to more info about it.
8. What’s one of the weirdest/funniest out of context lines from your WIPs?
From any of them? Oh, man. Let’s see. Oh.
Oh, I’ve got one.
“Mussolini was delicious.”
[One of my favorite comments on that story was “you just wanted an excuse to use this line didn’t you.” Yes.
Yes I did.]
9. A movie/show that made you cry? (Unless you’re dead inside)
I could make you an itemized list sorted by the level of weeping, but I won’t. Instead, here’s a short list of tear-jerkers off the top of my head:
The first ten minutes of P.S. I Love You. Yes, I know it’s the happy part.
Recently, a few episodes of One Day At A Time (#SAVEODAAT).
The animated short film One Small Step (saw this one with a friend in theatres. We both bawled openly in public).
One or two episodes of the new Queer Eye.
Big Fish
[there are so many that it’s getting hard for me to remember individual cries]
The plane episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. You know the ones. Ugh.
The last episode of the first campaign of Critical Role - oh my God thank the heavens my roommate was out that night I was a mess. And episode 44. And any episode that has really emotional bits (you know the ones).
The end of The Adventure Zone. Oh MAN.
I can’t think of any more right now...
10. What movies or books or shows do you think are criminally underrated?
Galavant! It’s so GOOD. I really like Babyface, which is a movie from the 1930s, so I dunno how underrated it is. The Magicians show is really good, too. The White Queen. Rat Queens. I follow a bunch of webcomics, too! They’re all amazing:
Heartstopper. Jamie. Autophobia. Miss Abbott and the Doctor. Wilde Life. Patrik the Vampire. Heart of Gold. Novae. The Glass Scientists. Finding Home. Magical Boy. Long Exposure.
11. Which fictional character would you like to steal borrow from any world for a crossover with your own WIP?
Felicity Montague would have a ball with my setting. Oh, man. Medical science and magic at the same time? A playground. I’d like to see how Harry Dresden handles himself, too. That’d be entertaining.
