#50th re-write/fix it

my adhd can't chill tf down enough to sleep so may i present this (uhhh spoilers for new-who):
Everything in Doctor Who that ought to be fixed and why:
Any time the doctor shows racism, queerphobia, sexism, ableism, classism, etc. Unless a specific prejudice of Gallifreyan society exists, it would never make sense for the Doctor to be bigoted, even the one from the '60s
Related: when Thirteen breaks the Master's perception filter so the nazis would see he's a man of color and thus endanger him—the Doctor would never.
Completely abandon former companions. Maybe some, maybe originally, but even 2000 years of lessons learned later? The Doctor is a good man, abandonment is too inconsistent with his characterization to be a reoccurring, unchallenged trait.
Wiping Donna's memory. Cruel, erased her character arc and was not a fulfilling or meaningful end. Either kill her or have her decide to retire.
The convoluted reason the Ponds were stuck in 1939 New York. C'mon, if I tried for five seconds I could come up with a sensical reason why the Doctor never saw them and they were stuck. Or just don't make them stuck 🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe they decide to adopt and retire to avoid danger to the kid but the Doctor and River still regularly visit.
The "War Doctor". Showrunners confirmed this only existed because Christopher Eccleston refused to come back for the 50th Special (no shade to his choice). It might've backfired or seemed disrespectful of Chris's performance, but they should've simply recast Nine for it.
Just throw out Kill the Moon, it was bad writing, the heavy-handed abortion allegory was exhausting and weird (regardless of intentionality) and I don't usually cry "but the science!" but...the moon being gone, even if soon after it replaced itself, would cause apocalyptic destruction on Earth and possibly wipe out humanity. The primary salvageable bit that I think is integral is the Twelve/Clara fight at the end.
Danny Pink either doesn't die or doesn't stay dead. The paradox it would cause for him to die before him and Clara have kids when her and Twelve have MET those descendants and been on two separate adventures down that family line is irreconcilable. Full stop.
Bill doesn't die. The end. (Do NOT bury your fucking gays)
Don't have Graham be the last white seat on the Rosa episode, for fucking christ's sake. Plus where the fuck is at least the mention of Claudette Colvin?
Fourteen regenerates into Thirteen's clothes, following well-established rules of regeneration (BBC were cowards for breaking that just to sidestep having David Tennant "crossdress")
Headcanon bits that aren't necessarily tied to quality/consistent writing but I think would've been great:
The Doctor does find Melody. Maybe only by age six or so, if wanting to keep the Silence story intact, but rework Let's Kill Hitler to avoid the Mel situation. It makes me sad that they never got their baby back. She can still turn out to be River, maybe the regen into River only happened post season-six, keeping the reveal. Maybe Melody was eventually re-kidnapped by the Silence and then turned into River Song, or maybe Melody was always a kind of troubled trouble-maker and took on the River Song alias on her own.
Thirteen and Yaz absolutely get together.
keep in mind I haven't finished Thirteen's run (the stink of neolib BS from the Rosa Parks episode tanked my interest in keeping up until Chibnall fucked off), haven't seen the 60th Special yet, still have 20-something seasons of Classic Who to go, and don't remember everything I have seen, nor am I always right. I think on re-watch I'd find more issues but for now it's the list I've got that exactly zero (0) people asked for.

Note
now that the three specials are over, i got a bit nostalgic and watched some eps from season 4, but then i just decided to do a whole rewatch of classic rtd.
i just finished the girl in the fireplace, and i know its been said before but wowzers it really is modfat's prototype for the doctor/amy/river era, huh.
i havent watched it since the first time which would have been in 2010, and even then i remember how struck i was by how out of character the doctor felt, and how out of place the episode feels tonally. like when the doctor realized he was stuck in france, its like he completely forgot rose and mickey were trapped on an empty space ship, didnt even spare a thought for them. and they felt like two kids he was babysitting the whole time rather than actual companions.
it made me realize that part of what makes blink and family of blood so good was that the actual doctor was barely present so he didnt have a chance to mischaracterize him lol
oh boy oh boy do i feel all of that anon !!!!!!!!!!
you're right: it's been said to DEATH and by more eloquent people than me, but looking back gitf truly was a giant red flag re: some unbearable m*ffatism (as was the library two parter lbr). which is kind of funny because, despite being a HUGE tenrose girlie, 15/16 yo me looooooved that episode back when i first watched s2. but i feel like with every single rewatch since that first one i get more and more and more annoyed by it. m*ffat hated rose and it really shows etc etc. there are still some elements of it i really enjoy (the monsters kinda fuck and the concept of them trying to fix the ship with human parts is great, as are the whole time window thing. i love when eps blend historical & futuristic. also the soundtrack SLAPS). and i do think as a tenrose supremacist there's a lot of ways to interpret it that REALLY works for their relationship: it's right after the sarah jane ep and the doctor being truly confronted with rose's mortality/having to potentially leave her/lose her like he lost sarah for maybe the first time. (at least the first time as ten??) so him bringing mickey on board and then flirting with someone else to put distance between them/hide from his feelings is something i can work with. and it also works as a condensed echo/parallel of what tenrose's romance MEANS for the doctor; a blink of an eye and she'll be dead. but i dont think that was intentional on m*ffat's part. i'm just doing the heavy lifting.
overall, there's just a bunch of moments where you're kind of going: wtf the doctor wouldn't say/do that ????? even if he wasnt in love with rose (which he IS), he'd CARE that he left her alone. i can buy him leaving to save all those french people cos he wouldn't let innocents suffer.... but he'd be UPSET he lost ROSE and THE TARDIS??? it's bullshit. but then, i hate the way m*ffat writes ten in general (dont get me started on the 50th). and tbh i STILL don't understand why madame de pompadour even ends up falling for the doctor in the first place? it's completely shallow and superficial, like most of m*ffat's romances. it's like he's always trying to write a love at first sight/fairy tale story but he doesn't give it much substance so you're left with something completely hollow. it's emotionally empty.
anyways, he was much better at writing standalone eps than showrunning (imo), but even they haven't aged as well as some others rip.

AO3  TSP
The youngest Doctor clutched his head as the screams of the Time Lords tore through his mind. As the agony became too great for his overwhelmed barriers, ripples of pain could be felt by his successors and Rose through their bond. One by one, each Gallifreyan connection ripped off into silence and his mind was left in tatters. The sudden lack of noise in his mind was suffocating in its quiet and did not afford him the relief it should have. His legs wobbled and he fell to the ground. Rose stepped forward, but was stopped by the eldest Doctor.
“You can’t interfere. This forms who I’ll be after the Time War. Who I was when you first met me.”
Rose’s eyes flashed. “Don’t presume to tell me what’s best for my husband.”
“But it’s me! And I don’t want-”
“Do you recall our bonding vows?”
The older Doctor winced and tried to scan through the memories of the Time War to find the right one. “I’m sorry. I haven’t had a chance to go through all the memories that’ve been hidden from me. I only remember our Earth ceremony.”
Rose’s eyes softened and her anger faded a bit. She cupped his cheek. Her eyes glowed gold and the memory the Doctor sought was pulled to the forefront of his mind. He closed his eyes as the precious event replayed behind his eyelids.
Do you vow to tend to the garden of each other’s mindscape as you would your own?
“Oh, Rose.”
“It’s a vow I intend to keep.”
He closed his eyes against her entreaty. “Rose...”
She laid her hand on his arm. “I won’t watch him be driven mad by this. When we met, yes, you were still hurting and, yes, it was awful, but you were still you. You still saw the joy in the small things. That daft, quick grin of yours… That’s the man I fell in love with. I want you safe, my Doctor. And I can’t stand by and do nothing while you’re suffering like this.”
The older Doctor clenched his eyes closed and stepped back.
Rose went to move to her husband’s side. But something was wrong.
The world suddenly had gone unnaturally quiet. Rose looked around at the others in the room, all unmoving, frozen in time. Rose reached back to the Doctor closest to her, the one in the bowtie. She touched his arm and found it as hard as stone. She turned to her second doctor and waved her hand in front of his unseeing eyes.
“Doctor! Doctor!”
Rose spun around looking for the smallest movement from anyone or anything. Even the dust was suspended in the air and felt like pins pricking her when she tried to move her hand through it.
Just as she was approaching all out panic, Rose heard singing. A beautiful song that calmed her racing heart and brought peace to her soul.
The TARDIS that had been her home for the last century began materializing in the barn between her later selves.
Rose, with the golden mantle of time wrapped around her, materialized inside the sister of her heart and other half of her soul.
Together, of one mind, they dematerialized and rematerialized at the site of the collapsing star that was once known as the Eye of Harmony, Gallifrey’s incredible power source and the post by which the fabric of all time was held together. The time bubble that had prevented its demise was irrevocably breaking down and time was fraying at its source.
The Goddess of Time had seen this moment in the dawn of eternity. And so she searched through all of time and space for a daughter - created of herself. A being through whom she could interact with the physical world. Bad Wolf. A hybrid of two unique females, Rose Tyler and the TARDIS, both willing to battle for the universe, for justice, for hope, for love. These two souls, fully merged and floating over the ruins of Gallifrey, knew what needed to be done. Drawing on the power of the newly-formed black hole and her own artron energy, Bad Wolf orchestrated the birth of a star from the gases and dust left in the wake of the destruction of Gallifrey.
With a wave of her hand, the Time Goddess - directed the nebula to gain mass and stability. It formed into an object pulsing with power, burning through its hydrogen atoms, billions of years in the blink of an eye. As the flames of the star burned more luminous than ever, she trapped it in that moment, at its brightest and just on the brink of death, and howled her name across the cosmos.
Rose and the TARDIS worked in tandem to free the knotted strands of time, unraveling it completely. A billion billion people across the multiverse knew unending sadness and their hearts broke with each filament. All of that dissipated as Bad Wolf remade and then re-anchored the Web of Time to its new hitching post.
When they were done, they hid it a moment out of sync from the rest of the universe. When all that was, is, and ever could be was safe from any who may try to harness the power from which all of time flowed, the Goddess smiled and life carried on as if nothing at all had happened.
With the prophecy fulfilled, Bad Wolf released Rose and the TARDIS to return to the moment from which they’d left.
Time sped up around Rose until she was once again in sync with the others in the barn.
The two older Doctors and Clara rushed to Rose’s side when they noticed her frozen in place, her eyes filled with the light of the time vortex. Slowly, her limbs once again began to move and her chest filled with breath, but the glow in her eyes didn’t fade.
Rose collapsed to her knees across from her writhing husband.
“Rose!” Her pinstriped Doctor moved to grab her. “What happened?”
She lifted her hand in warning. “I had a prophecy to fulfill.”
“What are you talking about? What prophecy?”
The oldest Doctor gasped. “Rose!”
Her body took on a golden shimmer just beneath the surface and she crawled to the youngest Doctor’s side. Her voice vibrated with power, “I am Bad Wolf. Your Rose Tyler, created by Time from the dust of the cosmos. I see all that is, was, and ever could be. I see the Last Son of Gallifrey, and set him to be the protector of my domain. I gave him my daughter, as mate, to keep him safe and to run at his side forever. Sleep now, Doctor.”
She kissed his forehead, his eyelids, his nose, and finally his lips. She ran her hands through his hair, over his ears, down his cheeks, and then she brushed his temples.
He whimpered.
Rose’s voice swirled through the cavern of the Doctor’s mind, brushing away the chaos and healing the most badly damaged edges. He still hurt, but the pain was muted. I love you, my Doctor. Come find me. I’ll be waiting.
Bad Wolf then helped Rose hide his memories of their life together, leaving the basics of what had occurred, but creating a false incarnation and blurring her presence into a fairytale.
Panting from the effort of keeping the time bubble securely around them and the Doctor’s regeneration energy at bay, she finally gave in and the barn exploded in white light.
--
Rose slowly came awake on a bench pressed closely into the sides of two Doctors. Her head lolled against a pinstriped shoulder. His chin rested on the top of her head and she could feel it move as he asked his counterpart, “I won’t remember this, will I?”
“The time streams are out of sync. You can’t retain it, no.”
“Why can’t I take her with me?”
“It’s not the right time. I’m sorry.”
She felt his sigh and the catch in his breath while he considered his next question. “How much longer?”
“Until?”
“Don’t be stupid.” The hand around her waist tightened. “Until I get her back.”
Rose could feel the bowtied Doctor shifting and her eyes opened as he stood. He smiled at her. “Knew you’d awoken.”
He his eyes darted back to the broken man he remembered once being. Living without Rose was one of the worst times in his long life and he ached to give some relief to to his former self, but… “Spoilers.”
The defeated look in the other man’s eyes nearly had him blurting out all their secrets.
“Stop it!” Rose jumped from her seat and they both stared at Rose in surprise. She ran her fingers along the Doctor’s sideburns. “I’m coming back to you. Soon. I promise.”
“What?”
“How could you possibly-”
She silenced them both with a glare, before rolling her eyes. She pressed a kiss to the Doctor’s forehead. “Trust me. Certain things need to happen for you, things that have already happened for me, before I can come back. But then you’re stuck with me.”
His wide grin spread across his face. “Stuck with you, that’s not so bad.”
She pulled him to a stand and grinned back. The bowtied Doctor cleared his throat. “Sorry, but we’ve got to get going.” He tilted his head toward the TARDISes, both of which had begun groaning their dismay.
“Right. Anyway, good to know my future is in safe hands.” The Doctor raised Rose’s hands to his lips. With a sigh, he turned to Clara and pointing at Rose and his future self he said, “Keep an eye on those two, Clara.”
She laughed. “On it.”
He winked at her and waved goodbye to the others. He stepped into the TARDIS with one last longing look at Rose before letting the doors fall closed.
Rose threw herself into the older Doctor’s arms. “That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.”
“Rose, you just ended the Time War.”
She sniffled. “I know.”
He kissed the top of her head. “C’mon. Let’s get you to one of the happiest day of my life.”
Rose raised her teary eyes to his and smiled. “Really?”
“Oh, yes.”
--
The Doctor fiddled with a knob to the monitor and wouldn’t meet Rose’s eyes.
“Doctor?”
He turned to her with a big smile. “Right! End of the line.” His gaze raked over her. She was dressed once again in the outfit she’d been wearing back when she’d been jumping dimensions. “Just outside those doors is a Time L-” He narrowed his eyes at her hands. “Wait! Be right back.” The Doctor ran up the stairs of his console room and disappeared down one of the corridors.
“Doctor!” Rose turned to Clara. “What’s he doing?”
“With him, I never know.” She shrugged and went back to her book.
The Doctor clambered down the steps carrying a giant gun reminiscent of the one Rose had lost ages ago on an almost deserted gunship.
“Where did you find that? I lost it!”
“Oh, erm, well, this isn’t yours exactly.”
“What?”
“It’s Mickey’s or was Mickey’s.”
“Mickey?”
“Don’t worry about how I got it, honestly, little bit of a paradox there, but listen, this...this is very important...”
“Yeah?”
“After you get back to me and you’re safely on the TARDIS, before you do anything else to help me with the...the cause of the stars going out. I need you to take this gun back to storage room G. Tell me that you’ll catch up with me. I’m not gonna want to go without you, but it is essential that this is returned to storage before you step one foot out of the TARDIS doors. Let me and Jack and Donna head out before you. Got it?”
“Uh, yeah, of course. Storage room G.”
The Doctor let out a relieved breath. “Good. That’s everything. Oh, and be careful out there, never know what’s lurking just around the corner.”
“Corners, eh?”
The Doctor put his hands in his pocket and shrugged.
Rose slipped the strap of the gun over her shoulder and looked wistfully at the door. “So, just outside those doors?”
The Doctor wrapped Rose in his arms and kissed her forehead. “Everything you worked so hard for.”
Rose smiled tearily up at the Doctor and cupped his jaw. “Thank you.”
“No, thank you. You never stop saving me.” He pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.
Rose took a deep breath and walked toward the door. She paused before going through it. “I’ll see you later.”
The Doctor winked. “Not if I see you first.”
Rose’s eyes sparkled with mirth. “It was lovely meeting you too, Clara.”
“Bye, Rose. And good luck!”
Rose waved and walked out into the next chapter of her life.
--
Wilf knocked on the glass of the door, still stuck in the booth, to get the Doctor and Rose’s attention. They pulled back from their hug and swung their heads toward him.
“They gone, then? Yeah, good-o. If you could let me out?”
Rose nodded and walked over to the glass enclosure.
Wilf swallowed nervously. “This thing seems to be making a bit of a noise.”
The Doctor gave it a cursory glance. “The Master left the Nuclear Bolt running. It's gone into overload.”
“And that's bad, is it?”
“No.” The Doctor turned to look at his wife. “...because all the excess radiation gets vented inside there. Vinvocci glass contains it. All five hundred thousand rads, about to flood that thing.”
Rose ran her finger along the Doctor’s jaw and raised to her toes to give him a quick kiss. “I’d better let ‘im out then. I’d hate for Donna to come back from her honeymoon and find somethin’ had happened to her gramps.”
The Doctor pulled her back for a more thorough snog before running his fingers through her hair. “You don’t need to do this. I can do it this time.”
“Doctor…”
“It’s going to hurt. A lot. Please, Rose. Let me.”
“I can handle it. Trust me, yeah?” Rose slipped into the other half of the booth and pulled the door closed. She looked over the control panel and found the button she was searching for. She smiled bravely at the Doctor and pressed the button.
Wilf’s side unlocked and the Doctor helped him out and they both stepped back from the glass booth. A red light flooded Rose’s side and she screamed out in pain, knees buckling under her. The Doctor balled his fists and clamped his jaw, unwilling to turn away. Wilf clutched at the Doctor’s shoulder, but couldn’t bring himself to watch Rose writhing on the ground.
After an unbearably long few seconds, the power shut down, and the Doctor raced through the now unlocked door. He fell to his knees and gathered her into his embrace. He rocked back and forth with her in his arms. “Come on, love. Come on. Come back.”
A faint glowing rippled under her skin and her eyes fluttered open.
The Doctor breathed out in relief. “Hello.”
“Hello.” Rose lifted her hands to the Doctor’s face and ran her fingers over the cuts and scrapes on his face. They healed under her touch. She smiled faintly and ruffled his hair. The Doctor stood, Rose held securely in his arms. “Never gets easier.”
She snuggled into his side. “Wha’?”
“Watching you die. Wondering if this is the time you don’t come back.”
“Never gonna happen. Promised you forever, didn’t I?”
The Doctor’s grip on her tightened. “Let’s go home. Get you to bed.”
“Mmmm, Doctor. Reading my mind are you?” She gave him a saucy grin with a hint of tongue peeking out.
“Not like that!”
Her merry peal of laughter did more to lighten the fear that had taken hold when she was rendered unconscious than anything else. He released his own soft chuckle. “Allons-y, Rose Tyler.”
--
“Sorry we didn’t make it to the Moon.” The Doctor fidgeted at the controls.
Clara paused at the door and leaned up against the jamb. “That’s okay. Another time.”
“We could go now?”
Clara shook her head. “We’re already back and I have a date with Danny in 20 minutes. I really need to get ready. Where’s Rose, your Rose, anyway? I meant to ask.”
The Doctor blew out a breath. “Donna went into labor with the twins.”
“Oh! That’s great!”
“I apparently was making her anxious, so they kicked me out. I don’t hover. I’m not a hoverer. Am I?”
Clara laughed.
“Oi! I’m not. I the king of cool. I’m gonna be the cool uncle. Uncle Doctor Cool.”
Clara’s lips twitched. “Whatever you say, Doctor.”
He flung himself onto the jumpseat and leaned his head back. “I hate it when Rose isn’t here.”
“Why don’t you just jump ahead a few hours?”
He let out a deep breath. “Rose always knows when I cheat.”
“But does she mind?”
The Doctor shrugged.
“Well then, I suppose you could wait in the waiting room like a normal person.”
“Now you sound like Sylvia, and believe me that is not a compliment.”
Clara pushed off the door and backed into her flat. She pointed at the Doctor. “Take my advice, go back to the hospital, wait for your wife in the waiting room, and stay out of Donna’s way until after the babies get here. And bring a gift.”
The Doctor rolled his eyes but nodded all the same.
“And next week, Mister, you can take me to visit them.”
“Yes, boss.” The Doctor saluted his friend. “Enjoy your date.”
“Tell Rose, I said, ‘hi.’” Clara waved as she turned and walked into her bedroom.
--
Rose walked into the darkened waiting room fighting to keep her eyes open. She smiled when she noticed the Doctor sprawled across three seats. He had his jacket off, his shirtsleeves rolled up, and his hair looked like he’d done a lot of running his hands through it. He was tossing his sonic and gave every appearance of being completely bored. She honestly was surprised to see that he hadn’t simply skipped ahead. She saw it as a testament to his fondness for Donna, that he would willingly subject himself to keeping himself in one place for a length of time.
The Doctor caught sight of Rose leaning against the wall out of the corner of his eye and jumped up. “Rose! How long have you been standing there?”
“Not long.” She gave him an affectionate smile and pushed off the wall. “Let’s go home. I’m knackered.”
The Doctor tugged his jacket back on, and picked up two big teddy bears and a bouquet of flowers that she hadn’t noticed.
“What’s all this?”
“Clara said I should bring a gift, but then I realized I didn’t know if she meant for the babies or for Donna. So I got all of them something.”
Rose’s heart expanded with her love for the man in front of her. She leaned forward and kissed him softly. “That is very thoughtful and sweet, but they’re all resting right now so you’ll have to give it to them in the morning.”
“Oh.”
She took one of the stuffed animals from him and clasped his hand. He tugged her in the direction of where he’d parked the TARDIS and opened the door for her.
“So, you saw Clara today?”
“Mmhmm.” He dropped the bear and the flowers onto the jumpseat and began digging through his pockets.
“What are you looking for?”
“Hang on. Just put it in here a few hours ago, so it should be near the top. Ah ha!”
The Doctor pulled out a small piece of metal and Rose’s hands flew to her mouth.
“Where...where’d you get that?”
The Doctor walked over to Rose and lifted her hand. “I asked the TARDIS nicely and for once she indulged me.” He slipped Rose’s wedding band, the one he’d given her for their 80th anniversary while still in his eighth body, onto her ring finger.
“How? I didn’t think you...” Her eyes widened. “Oh! You saw Clara today.”
He nodded and she saw a sadness in his eyes that she hadn’t seen in ages. “After I saw you wearing it in that clearing in 1562, I, well, I figured since you don’t wear it or keep it on you some other way, then you had to have it around here somewhere.”
“Oh, Doctor!” Rose pulled him into her embrace and held onto him tightly. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there with you.”
“You were.”
“Not this me.”
He pulled back to press a kiss to her forehead. “You know how you always tell me that I’m the same man and you’ll love all of me?”
“Yeah.”
He took her hands in his. “Well, what makes you think that I can’t or don’t love any and all of you?”
She gave him a bright but tremulous smile.
He dropped his eyes to their entwined fingers. “You know, I wondered at the time why it didn’t bother you more that I completely forgot to get you a ring when we got married. Our second marriage as it turns out.”
“The one in New Las Vegas?”
He nodded and met her eyes.
Rose took a deep breath and sighed. “Honestly, I was a bit relieved that in the whirlwind of eloping, you overlooked it. I already had one, and even if I couldn’t wear it, it was still mine. I’d not even taken it off 24 hours prior and was still processing everything. Plus it was worth it to see the officiant’s face when he asked if we’d be exchanging tokens of our love and your eyes got all wide and you stuck your hands in your pockets frantically searching for something. When you pulled out those pebbles and started babbling about the wedding rituals on Awipop-”
“You laughed!”
“I did. I love my pebble. And I was just so happy to be back and it was so...us. It felt good and I was a little bit relieved that you still wanted me, knowing you didn’t remember any of our life together.”
“What do you mean not want you? How could you even think that? Those years without you were the worst of my life. You saw me, the skinny hedgehog me, back when were were dealing with the Zygons. How much I missed you. How-”
“I know. I do. I guess I just didn’t expect that the first thing you’d do after seeing me again was to drag me to New Las Vegas to get married.”
“Well, it wasn’t the first thing I did with you.” His barely there eyebrows waggled.
Rose blushed at the memory and giggled. “No. We did have all that really great reunion sex first.”
He puffed up his chest. “It was really great, wasn’t it?”
“Shut up.”
He wagged his finger at her. “You know, I was so guilty after we woke up the following morning and we were bonded. I thought I lost control during the night and-”
She stopped him with a hand to his chest. “I’m sorry. I know how freaked out it made you and I felt awful. It was really me who’d lost control and I couldn’t say anything because those memories were all hidden from you.” Her lips twitched. “I was planning on shielding the bond as best I could and hoping you’d ask me to bond with you again. But then-”
“I would have. Just for the record. Could barely think of anything else when you were back in my arms. I felt at peace for the first time in years.”
“I really am sorry.”
“Don’t be. I wouldn’t change one moment of our time together.”
“None of it? Even losing me?”
“Oh Rose, I didn’t enjoy losing you, but if I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have been with me during the Time War, and I...I really think I only survived because you were there with me.”
“Doctor…”
“Rose, I have never been happier in my lives than I am right now, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.”
Rose carded her fingers through his hair and dragged him down for a messy kiss. “I love you.” She pulled back and laced their fingers together. “Let’s go to bed.”
They walked to their bedroom as they would continue on forever - hand in hand.

A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first ever fic! It's really just an idea I've had for months, and then wrote, and then couldn't figure out which hockey boy it fit, until some mutuals were kind enough to help. I settled on our boy Barzy! It's inspired by Taylor Swift's "Gold Rush", and I really wanted to do my best in reflecting the beautiful imagery this story creates for me. I hope I did it justice. It's a little terrifying putting my writing out there, but I hope people enjoy it!
Word count: 3.4k
Warnings: Two curse words, it's really just internal conflict within the reader
Summary: You're celebrating your dad's 50th birthday with some friends and family at a dinner party. You happen to land your eyes on a beautiful stranger, who you can't seem to get out of your head. You spend the rest of the night wondering, should you go up to him?
Or do you let him walk out the door?
___________
They say when you first lay eyes on your soulmate, time stands completely still. As you gaze into their eyes, it feels as though you’ve known them for multiple lifetimes. It feels like home. Is that even remotely true?
You start to take a sip of your drink and turn your head slightly to take in your surroundings. Your eyes dance around the room, until they stumble upon another pair of wondering eyes. Your eyes lock, and you’re instantly sucked into the mysterious yet intriguing twinkling grey-blue color that compliments his navy blue suit. Suddenly, your breath hitches in your throat, every part of your body stiffens, except for your lips that part slightly and eyes that widen. The drink is long forgotten, you’re even struggling to keep it from practically falling out of your hands and onto the wooden floor. The party is now just a blur, the noise? What noise? The world is muffled, as if someone stuck your head into a hundred pillows. Images stream through your mind like an endless movie reel wrapped in shimmery gold. Endless laughter on a first date over coffee. Him rubbing the back of your hand as you take a stroll through the park. Holiday mornings, exchanging gifts. Would he participate in the tradition of opening small gifts first, or would he want the biggest gift right off the bat? Ice skating and him catching you as you stumble on a pesky track in the ice. Him tossing you into the pool while you’re trying to put up a fight in a losing battle. A sweet and quiet proposal where he promises his forever love. A kiss at the altar in front of all your friends and family. Chasing after rambunctious little kids trying to get them to nap. All these gold dripping images of a pure love plow through your brain. Your heart is the unmovable object. They are the unstoppable force.
You and him only shared a look for what was probably half a second, but the thick air that seemed to only be affecting you made time feel like it stood completely still.
You burst back into reality with the help of a slight head shake. “Woah,” you quietly whisper. You blink a few times and finally get around to taking a sip of your drink to quench your parched throat. Did you just see a whole future...with a stranger?
“Hey, are you okay?” Stella asks. Her hand gently touches your arm as she cocks her head to the side. Her brows are furrowed in what can only be described as pure confusion. Did you really space out that badly as she was talking? What were you guys even talking about?
“Oh,” you say as you gently shake your head, “yeah.” You chuckle, “yeah, I’m just fine.” You wait a beat then say, “Hey, I’m going to use the bathroom really quickly, okay?”
“Sure thing,” she nods. “Do you need me to come with?”
“I’m totally fine, I promise,” you reassure with every bone in your body while giving her your drink. You really just needed to be alone to calm your racing mind that has now turned a complete stranger into a romantic interest with the power of a golden montage.
You make your way over to the exit of the dining hall and push the creaky open with your shoulder, and the amount of force you had to use honestly hurt. Your heels click down the tiled hallway of the golf club to find the bathroom door. The rectangular bathroom mirror framed in an intricate gold design holds your reflection. You slightly tilt your head as you take a look at your face. It’s like someone took the color of a clown nose and colored in your face with it. Jeez. You shake your head and sigh. This isn’t good, and deep down, you know that. You hate when you’re like this, all flustered over someone who just happened to lock eyes with you. His eyes. They were gleaming and just all around beautiful. What were you thinking again?
Oh, right.
Well, it’s pretty obvious he has this power over you, and you don’t like that. Now is your face going to become red everytime you see him? You check your phone. There’s still two hours left, plenty of time to possibly see him again. You can’t tell if that’s necessarily a good or bad thing.
You pace around the bathroom trying to reason with your begging heart. He was pretty good looking, which means that so many people naturally want him. Who was he even talking to, anyways? You gasp and stop in your tracks, blood running cold. “He was talking to a girl,” you mumble. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t sound completely and utterly crushed. In the heat of the moment, you completely failed to realize the blonde standing next to him. You lean over the counter, the cold marble feeling on your arms making your arms break out in goosebumps. You take one last stern look in the mirror at your face. “See, this is why we can’t allow ourselves to fall that hard,” you whisper angrily, “everyone wants him, and I just...I don’t like a gold rush like that.” You shake your head again and take one last deep breath to shake out any other thoughts. You can see yourself standing barefooted at the bottom of a hole looking astounded at how tall the walls have grown, and how distant the light looks. It feels like you soared lightheartedly into the sky, just to fall and crush every bone in your body.
You roll your eyes to yourself while slightly cursing yourself out. Pushing the bathroom door open, you step out into the hallway and make a beeline back for the dining hall. Your purse starts spastically vibrating, so you hastily fish your phone out to put an end to the obnoxious noise. Scanning the text, you read that your mom is asking where you went, as the cake for your dad’s birthday is going to be cut soon. You sigh as you text, “I’m hurrying back now.”
That’s all you see before you feel a slight brush tickle your bare shoulder. Your eyes don’t dare move from your phone screen. You reason that it’s not someone you know, as they would have said something to you. Your hands shake as you put your phone back in your purse.
“Oh, sorry,” the voice trails off as he continues to walk down the hallway after he brushed up against you.
“It’s okay,” you whisper, without turning around, which is admittedly ridiculous.
As soon as you can judge his footsteps are far away enough, you make a quick glance behind to see if it really was him. And judging by the navy blue suit, it was.
Suddenly, the golden montage flows through your mind once more, showing an image of yourself wearing an old shirt of his, maybe one from when he was in high school for whatever sport he played, if he played one. Your feet feel the coolness of the wooden floor of the supposed home. The home both of you share? It’s so tangible, so real that you almost reach out to touch it. It’s right there...
Your head jerks yourself out of the vision once more, or rather the fact that you’re now faced with a white wall in front of you. You sigh a long frustrated sigh. I can’t believe I really walked by the entrance, how embarrassing, you think as you turn on your heels to backtrack. Why does this stranger have you so wrapped around his finger? No one else has been able to even come close to doing that. You feel your face with your hand, and it’s burning. I’ll go in there looking like a tomato, it’s fine.
You do your best to quite literally shake off those thoughts as you push open the dining room hall door. “There you are!” your mom says. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you. Come on, we’re going to sing happy birthday to Dad.”
“Can’t wait,” you beam. After all, your dad only turns 50 once, and this night is about him, afterall. You follow your mom to a table with a white tablecloth resting on it.
Stella pops out from behind your dad to approach you and whispers, “Are you sure you’re okay?”
You resist the urge to gently shove her in front of everyone. “Yes,” you pleadingly insist, “now stop asking me in front of Mom and Dad, they’ll think something is wrong.”
She side eyes you with an attitude. “Fine.”
“They’re my girls,” your dad says with a smile.
You and Stella laugh while leaning into him for a quick hug. “Hey dad,” you both say in unison.
The room completely dies down, people could hear a pin drop. “Ready?” your mom asks the guests. The room takes a collective deep breath.
And so the melody of Happy Birthday rings joyously through the hall, you can see the mystery stranger out of the corner of your eye. Heat radiates off your skin, it’s almost like you can feel his eyes boring into you. It takes all the willpower you can muster, but you resist the temptation to look over at him all throughout the song.
When the song is over, the room breaks out into obnoxiously loud clapping. You, Stella, and your parents share loving looks and warm smiles.
Eventually, everyone proceeds to return to normal chatter at the one rectangular table of two that they’re sitting at, and so do you, Stella and your parents.
You pull out your seat next to your sister near the middle of the middle of the table and sit, fixing your dress.
“Ahem,” Stella says in an ill attempt to cover her suspiciousness with a clearing throat noise. Queue whatever accusatory question she’s got.
“Let me just set something straight,” she starts.
“Go for it,” you say as you reach for some water.
“It’s definitely that guy a few seats down, isn’t it?” She smirks. She’s got you trapped in her little web, and she knows it.
You may or may not have fought back choking on your water or pulling a ridiculous spit take on the nice white table cloth.
You lean in and harshly whisper, “Well you didn’t have to say it that loudly.” You glance over at the mystery stranger and see his hand wrapped around his glass as he goes to drink it. He has a thick silver ring on his pointer finger?
“Hello?” Stella shifts her head to selfishly cut off your view of him.
“Okay,” you sigh in defeat, “yes it’s him. Happy?”
“Very,” she says, very satisfied because she finally pried it out of you and got you to admit it. Someone else has you wrapped around their finger. She didn’t even have to know all the details of the montages to know. She could tell by the way your eyes glossed over and how your lips would slightly part like you were in a hazy daydream.
And you were.
“Who is he anyway? And why don’t we know him?” You ask.
“I don’t know, honestly. A little strange, isn’t it? Why don’t you ask mom who he is?” She suggests, but her cheshire smile suggests that she will somehow find out, with or without your mom’s help.
“But mom’s going to absolutely harass me until I say something to him. Just you on my tail is enough,” you say with an eyebrow raised as to say ‘don’t test me.’ And Stella knows you’re right.
“Alright, fine,” she concedes, “But why don’t you, I don’t know, talk to him?”
“I did,” you nonchalantly float.
Her eyes widen and her mouth forms an “O” from disbelief. Did you really not talk to people that much?
“Really?” she practically squeals.
“Yeah, he brushed by me and said, ‘Sorry’ so I said, ‘It’s okay.’” Okay, now you get why your friends and family get mad at you for refusing to talk to people. But cracking this joke was one you could not pass up.
Her face scrunches up and she exhibits the biggest eye roll you have ever seen. She opens her mouth to start saying something, probably to scold at you, but you open your mouth to cut her off first.
“Alright no, I haven’t. And do you know why?” As you’re about to get your thought out, you’re interrupted by a fit of laughter down the stretch of the table. Your eyes scan but freeze on the stranger, whose nose is adorably scrunched up as he laughs with multiple, yes multiple, people about goodness knows what. And there’s that other blonde that you still don’t know, laughing with him. You tear your stare away and focus back on your sister.
“Look, that right there. That’s why,” you say, anger burning through your chest.
Stella raises an eyebrow in her own judgemental manner. “He talks to people? You know people do that right?”
Now it’s your turn to return the favor of a judgemental eye roll. “No, Stella, I mean just look at him and the people he’s surrounded by. It’s so obvious that everyone wants him. Just look at that girl with him. I’m not the only one who wants to love him.”
Silence ensues between you two. She picks up her phone and shoots a quick text. After a moment she says, “Well, I think if you just talked to him, you’d be pleasantly surprised with what could happen. I have to help mom with distributing gift bags. You stay here,” she instructs.
You can only assume you’re not being called to help because Stella graciously told your mom that you’re potentially working up the courage to talk to someone that’s not one of your three friends or your family. How generous of her.
A few friends of your dad stop by your seat to say goodbye before they head out. The noise slightly dies down enough to scarcely hear some other conversations. You hear nothing out of the ordinary, just a girl talking about getting into her dream school to some guy. Your ears slightly move as you pick up on a voice that sounds like the one in the hallway earlier.
“Yeah dude, but did you see the fake out on the goalie on the second goal? That had to have been the best part.”
Out of instinct you open your mouth to interject, but quickly shut it and put it under lock and key. You blink in disbelief. Hockey? Did this man just speak on hockey?
You circle the rim of the coffee cup and stare at the brown liquid. In a different universe…
In a different universe you would have actually kept your mouth open, and maybe even squeezed some words out, too.
“Actually, that seamless stretch pass down the neutral zone from the defenseman after a pretty difficult forecheck set up the play pretty well. I’d give him a lot of credit, too.”
He’d probably look a little shocked, as do most guys when you interject your two-sense about hockey. But maybe he’d break out into a small smile and offer a rebuttal. Yeah, that sounds nice. Maybe one day…
Maybe one day you’ll be sitting next to him on the couch, watching a game while cuddling and brushing the hair out of his face. Oh who are you kidding, you’ll be up and screaming at the TV. It’s your staple.
A noise of someone dropping something behind you slightly startles you and pulls you out of your once again golden daydream. You finally stop mindlessly circling the rim of your coffee cup to take a sip, but only to find it’s now ice cold.
This is why you hate looking through a pair of rose colored glasses. It distracts you from enjoying things. You glance over at your dad who’s still talking to one of his good friends that lingered after festivities. You’re supposed to be celebrating him right now, but instead you’re literally stuck in this cursedly pure golden daydream that is almost too good to break.
You can see him. He’s still there, at the end of the table, chatting away with some dude. The blonde left at some point, though.
“Well, I gotta head out, man, good to see you. My sister needs help with packing her stuff for college tomorrow, so we’ve got a busy day coming up.”
Could that girl have been his sister?
“Congratulations to her on getting into her dream school by the way,” the guy says. “I talked to her when she was here earlier, and she seemed super excited.”
A wave of cool relief washes over your body, remembering the conversation about college you picked up on earlier. It was his sister.
“Yeah she is, she worked really hard, and it also involved a whole lot of crying,” he chuckles.
Ain’t that right, you think to yourself.
The table shakes as he pushes out of his chair. Your eyes remain glued to your coffee cup no matter how much you want them to move. You just can’t gather the courage to say something, and you’re cursing yourself for it. You don’t want to sit here and dream about him anymore. You want to actually let these things happen, for once. You want to just unleash all these swirling and sickeningly sweet emotions from your body and drown him in it. You want so badly to leap up and say something, anything. Step on those voices taunting you and mocking you saying that it could never happen, it could never be so it will never be. He’s so inviting that you can’t resist any longer. You go to reach out to him, but the door shuts before you know it.
And just as fleeting as he came,
He’s gone.
Fuck. It feels as though a brick is sitting on your chest, suffocating you. You really let your worries control you, and this time it feels as though you’re going to regret it for the rest of your life. You just can’t believe you let it happen when your mind was begging you to talk to him. You always do-
“Shit,” you mumble. In your frustration, you knocked over the remnants of the coffee onto the not-so-white-anymore table cloth. Tears prickle up in your eyes, your throat closes, and your nose begins to sting. You quickly swallow these emotions down your throat and begin to use a napkin to soak up the excess coffee. Drinks have really not been your friend tonight.
For the first time, you notice as you clean that it’s just you left in the room, besides a few people cleaning up on the other end. You’re not sure where your family has gone, but you haven’t received any texts prompting you to leave yet. It’s so silent that you can hear some muffled chatter down the hall.
Suddenly, you hear the same creak of the door open with an “oof” that doesn’t quite sound like your dad. Your blood runs cold and you freeze mid press into the tablecloth. You glance up without turning around to see a lone jacket hanging on a chair suspiciously close to the chair he previously sat in. Your eyes widen and dart around the room, but you dare not move, waiting to see what he does. Even after cursing yourself out for ten minutes while cleaning up spilled coffee, you still haven’t learned to make the first move. His presence feels like a forcefield, you can feel it heavily pressing into your back.
But he isn’t moving to grab the jacket, no.
A pointer finger with a silver ring taps your shoulder.
“Hey,” the clarity of his voice rings in your ears like a bell. Your heart is racing so fast that it feels like it’s going to burst out of your rib cage and run its own 10k. You slowly crank your head around to meet his eyes for the first time-- face to face.
And you must say, his face is really pretty when you actually talk to him face to face. Maybe you should do this more often. You take in his golden features, and struggle to hide a small smirk creeping up on your face. His messy hair falls perfectly into place on his head, and his kind face makes you feel as though a mess of metallic gold swirls are playfully swirling and dashing around you both. You’ve found him in this lifetime.
“I’m Mat, can I help you clean up before I grab my jacket?”

Rose Tyler Fanfic Rec
Fanfics where Rose Tyler is the main focus. A lot of them will also feature Rose being awesome and not some damsel in distress or a sidekick.
Ninth Doctor x Rose
Get Out Of My Dreams (And Into My TARDIS) by mayaspice
Rated: General
Usually, humans jump at the opportunity to travel with him. So, he's puzzled as to why Rose Tyler doesn't. If she were any other human, he'd be on his merry way, but there's something about Rose that makes him believe the universe (and maybe he) needs her. He takes it upon himself to find out why she's apprehensive about being his companion, and tries to convince her otherwise.
My Comments: This fanfic doesn’t really feel like a romance fanfic even though it’s tagged as one, but it’s brilliant. It’s so easy to get sucked into it which just shows how amazing the writing is. I won’t spoil, but I absolutely love Rose’s reasons for being hesitant and how the Doctor is forced to come to terms with it. You’ll probably end up re-reading this fanfic multiple times.
A Drop of Magic by dimensionhoppingrose
Rated: General
Their first meeting wasn't in the halls of the great castle, but in a dusty, forgotten corner of Flourish and Blotts. “Are you bored too?” He asked, and when she nodded he took her hand and said one word: “Run."
My Comments: A Harry Potter au that’s absolutely brilliant. There’s realistic struggles and the writing is amazing. I also love the friendship between Rose and Martha and the Doctor.
Tenth Doctor x Rose
Mr Smith and The Dinner Lady by lauraxtennant
Rated: General
Set during School Reunion - the Doctor has to contend with his class gossiping and asking inappropriate questions about the nature of his and Rose's relationship.
My Comments: I love this fanfic just for how intimidated the Doctor is by a bunch of teenagers. It also gives a nice glimpse into what the Doctor thinks of Rose who is just absolutely cheeky throughout the entire thing. It’s part of a series, but this is my favorite fic within it.
A Rose By Any Other Name by TardisIsTheOnlyWayToTravel
Rated: Teen-Mature
In which Rose Tyler opens a fob watch, and discovers that she's the Master.
My Comments: Even when Rose Tyler turns out to be the Master there’s still a bit of Rose Tyler in them which makes it so much more interesting. It’s hilarious and the Doctor can never catch a break.
Generation 5000 by ofstormsandwolves
Rated: General
A changed Rose lands on a strange planet while trying to find her way back to the Doctor, and finds herself being 'processed' by a group of soldiers who want help winning a war. Is it just a distraction, or will it help lead her back to the Doctor?
My Comments: Bad wolf and dimension hopping Rose makes an appearance! I love how Rose’s powers are different than standard ones people give her. I don’t want to give much more away, but I love the dynamics between the Doctor and Rose and their progenation machine children.
Rubbish As A Human by HalfASlug
Rated: Teen
With the Family of Blood after him, the Doctor has no choice but to become human and hide himself in Edwardian Britain. Fortunately, Rose and Donna are there to make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid. Unfortunately, there is no one to stop them doing anything stupid.
My Comments: Donna is absolutely amazing in this and I love her friendship with Rose. Those two have to put up with so much in this fanfic and they’re just utterly done with John Smith (aka chameleon arch! Doctor). It’s a hilarious fanfic and it’s definitely different than the usual ‘Family of Blood’ fanfics.
Feeling Electric by ProfessorSpork
Rated: Fiction K
She walks into the comic book store, and everything changes. An AU story. / "No!" she insists, but she's grinning and bumping his shoulder and he has never, ever talked to anyone like this before.
My Comments: The author has the real world connect so neatly to the tv show which I absolutely love. There’s an explanation for everything from why the Doctor wears a pin striped suit to the hindrance caused by Madame de Pompadour. It’s all done in such a brilliant way. Also, the way the Doctor and Rose fall in love is just perfect and fits them so well. There is slight smut though so you have been warned.
Heavy on the Build Up by cereal
Rated: Teen
"I don’t think I’ll be seducing Queen Elizabeth at all," he said. "Do you? Don’t you fancy a bit of running instead? Maybe I could make a speech, tug on my earlobe a bit? I could use the sonic, too." 50th spoiler fix-it.
My Comments: The Doctor thinks he’s so suave, but in reality, not so much. The Doctor’s thought process in regards to Rose is hilarious and so him. Such a fun read.
Rose Stays by l-ouresdeLuna (facemyJam) (WIP)
Rated: Not Rated
When Rose saves the Earth from the Christmas Star Invasion, she unknowingly becomes The Defender of Earth. It sets her on a path not unlike the one the Doctor took, but without the vast knowledge of the Doctor, she's forced to seek alternate endings.
My Comments: Rose is so very human in this series and I love it. She isn’t given any power ups or anything. Rose only has her brain, her companions, and her gadgets to rely on. We get to see Rose truly shine while still holding onto her kindness. This is such a welcome change from the typical route writers take in regards to this trope.
Eleventh Doctor x Rose
More than words by Teekalin (WIP)
Rated: Teen
In the middle of rebooting the universe, the Doctor gets a brilliant idea. A mad but brilliant idea. He has found a way to bring Rose back to him. Now all he need to do is create a second Big Bang and everything should work. He can only hope she will recognise him in his new body.
My Comments: Be prepared for the slow burn, because wow. The Doctor does that and still doesn’t do anything? But the author does a good job of incorporating Rose into the story. Definitely worth reading.
the definition of 'forever' by everythingyouever
Rated: Teen
Amelia Pond looks on in wonder at the blue, smoking police-box that’s smashed her shed. She’s even more amazed when the doors are thrown open, and a blonde woman emerges in a halo of yellow-orange light.
The stranger grimly surveys her surroundings and the state of the box, before shouting back down, “You landed us better the last time you did this!”
My Comments: A nice little fix-it where nothing bad ever happens to Melody Pond, the Doctor was only a year late, and Donna still has her memory plus a bunch of other things. Also, Rose and the Doctor are still traveling together and making people wonder if they’re together. Should definitely read.
Doctor x Rose x Jack
The Wolf at the Door by surrexi
Rated: Teen
Bilis Manger's manipulation of the Cardiff rift allowed Rose Tyler to slip through a tiny hole in the universe and she was reunited with Captain Jack. Cardiff is safe and the Torchwood hub is quiet. But what happens when the Doctor and Martha make a pit stop?
My Comments: This is the second book in a series, but it’s way better than the first one. You can read the sequel without being lost, so you don’t need to bother with the first book. It features an adorable reunion between the Tenth Doctor and Rose along with Bad Wolf! Rose saving the day. Also, Doctor and Jack and Rose working through their relationship issues (but mainly the boys).
Something Fantastic by Haely_Potter
Rated: Not Rated
River meant to send the message to the Eleventh Doctor. We know what happened when the Tenth Doctor received it. But what if it went further back, to the Ninth Doctor? Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead with Ninth Doctor, Rose and Jack.
My Comments: River Song keeps hinting at the future and Ninth is not having it. All her attempts fall flat. This fanfic also has Jack and the Doctor being protective over Rose, but she still manages to get into trouble and help save the day. I mainly love this fanfic just for the relationship dynamics between Jack, Rose, and the Doctor. They’re absolutely great together.
Multi-Doctor x Rose
Bending the Universe by Haely_Potter (WIP)
Rated: Teen
Separate AU one shots in Doctor Who 'verse
My Comments: It’s basically a series on all the different ways Rose could still exist within the Doctor’s life. They’re all very varied which makes it interesting and they show how the Doctor will always love Rose.
Ten and Rose elope and Eleven never marries River, but it's still canon-compliant. by TsukiKabanoki (WIP)
Rated: General
Yeah, I had this idea. I like angst, so most of it is probaby just the Doctor missing Rose or people finding out about her and all that.
My Comments: It’s a series that starts off with the Doctor finally telling Rose how he feels in ‘The Idiot’s Lantern’ and continues how it would in canon. Which makes everything so much more heartbreaking. But I absolutely love the raw emotions in the fanfics and how the Doctor could never stop loving Rose.
Things Change by wanderlust_and_rainbows
Rated: General
Post Parting of Ways, Rose Tyler becomes a little less human.
My Comments: Nothing is ever simple or easy in this fanfic, but the writing is absolutely stunning so you’ll keep reading even if it gets your heart broken. There is just so much depth and nothing is rushed when it comes to Rose. She gets so much character development and I absolutely recommend it. Just the dialogue and the realistic portrayal of relationships pulls you in. You’ll want to read it all in one sitting. Also, Jack is the best friend anyone could have in this.
Time Lines Diverge by valiantstorm
Rated: Teen
"I am the Bad Wolf, and I save Melody Pond."
Melody Pond isn't the only Pond who's met the Bad Wolf. Melody Pond, growing up like she should have, just add the big bad wolf and an immortal man. Oh, and don't forget the daft alien we all love.
My Comments: This is more Eleven x Rose than anything, but towards the end the Twelfth Doctor appears so there’s that. Rose gets to do some saving in this fanfic and travels with an immortal man and a young Pond she regularly kidnaps. Melody Pond is surprisingly likable and there’s just so much sass in her which makes you like her even more. Also, none of the past companions are forgotten which is all Rose’s doing.
The Catastrophic History of You and Me by I Took the One Less Travelled
Rated: Teen
Every time she saved him, she dissolved into nothing and disappeared. It just got harder after he knew who she was. AU in which Rose scattered herself as Bad Wolf across the Doctor's timeline and saved his life hundreds of times before he even met her.
My Comments: During the time Rose Tyler held the vortex she saved the Doctor so many times. It’s basically a fix-it during the time the Tenth Doctor is without Rose, but I totally approve of the changes. Also, I love the amount of emotion the author has the Doctor show in regards to Rose. It makes it all so much more intense.
Certain Dark Things by ABadPlanWellExecuted (WIP)
Rated: Teen-Explicit
A collection of stories about Rose as she dimension-hops her way back to the Doctor. Not in any particular order, except the order in which they fall out of my head.
My Comments: This series dives into the things Rose had to endure while in the search for the Doctor and it’s so interesting. There are so many great moments in this story and I honestly can’t say anymore without spoiling.
Prolonging the Inevitable by Aeolist
Rated: Teen
She's with him everyday. He's with her once a week. -- "Fifty more years… That's eighteen thousand, two hundred and fifty days. It sounds like a lot, put that way. It's not. Not for me. But if I space it out, if I wait a week in between every one of your days, I could keep you for three hundred and fifty more years in my own timeline."
My Comments: This fanfiction actually explores the idea of Rose growing old with the Doctor which I rarely see. It’s so heartbreaking, but I still love it. It’s primarily focused on the Tenth Doctor and Rose, but the Eleventh Doctor does make an appearance.
Has Someone Been Peeking At My Christmas List? by Vampiyaa
Rated: General
Eleven/Rose sort of; Twelve/Rose; Part Eight of the Who Holidays series. When the Eleventh Doctor takes Rory and Amy home to Leadworth, they stumble upon a future version of the Doctor holding hands with a very pregnant Rose Tyler. Apparently, somebody has most definitely been peeking at his Christmas list. Set just after A Town Called Mercy.
My comments: Definitely a fluffy story, but it has a dash of angst. Definitely an enjoyable story to read.
No Rose Without a Thorn by morningsound15
Rose goes to sleep one night next to her husband, John Smith, the man she has loved for going on three years now, and wakes up the next morning face-to-face with a complete stranger.
She just about falls straight out of bed.
**
Or: Whenever the Doctor regenerates, his human double over in Pete’s World does, too.
They all try to deal with whatever that might mean.
My Comments: This was such an interesting read, because it’s a struggle on both parties. The Metacrisis is forced to change without warning and figure themselves out all over again. Rose on the other hand has to relearn them all over again. Neither can run away from this. I love the way the author explores all of this and it’s done in such a realistic way.

#50: A novel in the making
Tumblr media
Welcome to another Writing Update—a weekly journal where I document the ups and downs of my writing life. It’s been almost a year since I started writing my current work-in-progress novel. It seems appropriate to dedicate the 50th post in this series to the story and what I’ve learned in the process.
A little more than a year ago, an idea for a fast-paced scene with an ensemble cast started floating in my head. I was flirting with another project at the time, and so I didn’t pay too much attention to it. Every time I dismissed it, the idea came back to nag a little more. I wasn’t entirely convinced that I was ready to start writing the other project I was researching, and so I finally conceded: I would write a fast-paced 20,000-word novella to clear my mind.
I started outlining, fleshing out the details. The scene in my mind was quite climactic, and, to write it, I felt like I needed to understand where these people came from and why they were doing it. A few weeks of work later, I had a story that didn’t only satisfy my curiosity. This is more than enough for a novel, I thought.
I was excited, but facing a dilemma: should I abandon the previous project to work on this expanded novella outline that I  just stitched together? I wanted to write something with a speculative element to it which didn’t fit into this new project. After some deliberation, I decided to go for it.
I started writing the next day—15 August 2017.
The First Draft
The first days were a bit erratic as I was finding my stride. At around chapter three, I got into a routine and spent the next four months grinding one chapter after the other, writing to a goal of 6,000 words per week.
Now, I’m by no means a fast writer. The strenuous schedule took its toll, and by November, I was not only behind, but also exhausted. For the first time in years, I stopped posting on this blog just so that I could focus entirely on the draft.
Fortunately, I took V.E. Schwab’s advice and wrote the beginning first, then jumped to the ending, leaving the middle to be filled in last. I liked the ending way too much to have the heart to abandon the project. So I doubled down and typed the last words on a murky Saturday afternoon a month later — 16 December 2017. 51 chapters, 95,000 words.
Lessons learned: Word goals are essential. Pushing yourself through the first draft does work (subject to health & safety, of course).
The Winter Crisis
I listened to Stephen King’s famous recuperation advice and put the damn thing away for six weeks before editing. I celebrated Christmas by writing a few random short stories and spent January recovering. But then February came along, and I wasn’t feeling like going back to the project. Even just reading it was torture. I just didn’t want to. Resistance was having the better of me.
It took me a full month to read the thing cover to cover. In the end, I produced about 35 pages of mostly sarcastic notes of what was wrong with it. In retrospect, it would’ve been easier to make notes of what I liked instead. Characters disappeared, there were plot holes. Most chapters suffered from the lack of proper structure. But it wasn’t all just epic fails. I liked the character dynamics at the beginning and the big climactic scene at the end. It had potential.
Lesson learned: next time, I won’t wait that long before editing.
With that information, I bought a stack of index cards and re-outlined the project. My fear that I would end up scrapping the whole thing proved unfounded. I dropped 4 chapters and added 6 new ones. Out of 51, that wasn’t so catastrophic after all.
I compiled character sheets for every significant character, wrote the new chapters and was ready for the next step.
Lessons learned: Having an outline doesn’t mean that you can’t change a thing later on. Conversely, you can happily start writing even if you don’t have every single detail figured out up front. Everyone has a sweet spot between freewheeling and total control. You’ll find yours through experience.
The Rewrite
In May, I went all the way back to chapter one and started a sequential rewrite. I keep two documents open, and I’m restructuring each chapter to make it more engaging. Some chapters are good as they are, others need a major facelift. I look at things like tension and pacing. I’m doing much more characterisation.
At the time of writing, I’m about 60% done. All I can say is that this has been the most difficult and yet the most exhilarating part of the process so far. It’s hard to describe, but the writing is literally coming alive.
I know it won’t be the final editing pass yet. There are still things to fix. But they’re getting smaller and smaller.
Lesson learned: It will take much longer than you think. And that’s ok.
The Future
If you asked me a year ago whether I thought that I would be working on the same book today, I’d probably laugh and say something evasive. In my mind though, I’d think that you’re insane. A year on the same project? Don’t be silly.
When you’re in the trenches, doing the work every day, it seems inconceivable that a year later, you could find yourself at the very same desk and not be done. Some authors take 10 years to write each of their books. But every time you read a story like that you’re thinking, God, I hope that won’t be me.
Well, now I’m the silly one. But I don’t regret a minute that I spent working on this project. It taught me so much not only about writing and storytelling. Finally, after almost a year, I’m convinced that this was the book that I was supposed to write.
A day will come when I will finish this novel. I cannot wait to share it with you and the world.
Short Stories
I wrote a part of the sequel to The Dead Borough this week, but I didn’t have the time to finish it. It’s coming next week! Until then, check out part one:
SHORT STORY: The Dead Borough
I’m trying to set up the second in the series in a way that you can read it even if you haven’t read part one, but it will definitely be more enjoyable if you did.
Alternatively, here’s the one I published last week:
SHORT STORY: Beautiful Cadavers
What I am reading
I’m almost done with David Grann’s The Lost City of Z—a brilliant account of the life of a British explorer who disappeared without the trace in the Amazon while looking for evidence of an ancient civilisation that he believed could’ve developed in the depths of the jungle.
A masterfully told story. David Grann is a staff writer for The New Yorker who clearly spent decades honing his craft. Thumbs up!
Tumblr media
Next, I’ll be picking up Charles Arthur’s Cyber Wars which I bought a few weeks ago in Cambridge.

INTERVIEW OF A LIFETIME: LUCILLE BALL
December 6, 1977
Tumblr media
Barbara Walters (Host) was born in Boston in 1929. She first became known as a television personality in the early 1960s, when she was a writer of 'women's interest stories' on “The Today Show.” In 1976, she became the first female co-anchor of a network evening news on the “ABC Evening News.” From 1979 to 2004, she worked as co-host and a producer for the ABC news magazine “20/20.” In 1997, Walters created and co-hosted “The View,” a daytime talk show with an all-female panel. She retired as a co-host in 2014, but still serves as executive producer. In 1996, Walters was ranked #34 on the TV Guide "50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time" list. Lucille Ball was #1. In 2000 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 2001, she appeared on “I Love Lucy's 50th Anniversary Special.”
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.
Gary Morton was a comedian who worked the famed ‘Borscht Belt’ in the Catskills Mountains. He met Lucille Ball shortly after her divorce from Desi Arnaz and they married in November 1961. At her request, Morton gave up his nightclub career and became a producer of “The Lucy Show.” Morton also served as a warm-up comic for the show’s studio audience. He appeared in several episodes of both “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.” Morton passed away in 1999.

Earlier in the evening of December 6, 1977, ABC aired new episodes of “Laverne and Shirley” (a show often compared to the antics of Lucy and Ethel) and “Three's Company” (a show Ball admired, and hosted a retrospective of in 1982).
When the show was repackaged for the Lifetime Network, Barbara Walters taped a new introduction and conclusion to the interview as well as new voice-over narration, referencing events from 1977 to Ball's death in 1989. She introduces the show by telling viewers that Lucy talked frankly about her failed marriage to Desi Arnaz, with her second husband, Gary Morton, sitting beside her.
Portions of the interview were later incorporated into "Barbara Walters: 20 Years at ABC."
Tumblr media
The interview starts in the living room of Ball's Roxbury Drive mansion in Beverly Hills, California.
Lucy: “There's always one room you live in. Play games in. The plants grow better in.”
Tumblr media
Lucy tells Walters that they have 85,000 feet of home movies. She screens one called “The Fat Little Cowboy” starring a two and a half year-old Desi Jr. and a four year-old Little Lucie. While the film is being screened in the living room, Lucy tells Walters that the two are much closer now than they were as children.
Tumblr media
Showing stills of her children in “The Lucy Show” and “Here's Lucy,” Walters flashes back (again through still photos) to when Lucy met Desi Arnaz and the creation of “I Love Lucy.”
Walters: (voice over) “There has never been a success like Lucy.”
Walters' narration talks about Lucy's divorce from Desi in 1960.
Tumblr media
The interview moves outdoors to the patio, the narration noting that Lucy was 66 at the time, Desi Arnaz was still alive, and the subject of the divorce was still painful.
Walters: “When you and Desi were married you had everything!” Lucy: “We had nothing. He had his own band and was in a play in New York.”
Ball firmly tells Walters that while she was acting, Desi was building the business, although nobody would believe it was him doing the building. She says he didn't deserve some of the names they called him. Lucy asserts there was an anti-Latino bias against Arnaz.
Walters: “And then it fell apart.” Lucy: “That was his problem.”
Walters quotes Lucy as saying that with Gary Morton, she didn't make the same mistake twice.
Lucy: “He's not a loser. I married a loser. He could win, win, high stakes. He worked very hard, but he had to lose. Everything he built, he had to break down. He still claims he's the same way.”
Walters asks whom takes care of whom. Gary says they take care of each other, but Lucy insists it is all Gary.
Tumblr media
When first marrying Gary, she was cautious. She didn't want to rob him of his individuality. Lucy mentions that Gary finds solace in golf and that Lucy never minded that.
Walters asks if it is true that Lucy doesn't 'think funny.' Lucy agrees saying she can do funny things other people write down in detail, but she doesn't think funny. She and Gary say they make each other laugh. Gary says she'll do 'Lucy-isms'. Lucy gives an example of a 'Lucy-ism': when making a chopped chicken liver platter for guests, the top came off the salt shaker creating a mound of salt atop the food. To try to fix it, she rinsed it in the sink. They went out to dinner that night.
Tumblr media
Gary says Lucy's best quality is her warmth. Gary is hard-pressed to come up with her worst quality but Lucy says it is that she hates that he takes naps.
Lucy says she lives by the ‘think positive’ ideals of Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.
Tumblr media
Walters asks Lucy what it was like when she stopped doing series television in 1974. “Traumatic,” says Ball. She thinks she stayed on a bit too long, but only stuck it out because her children were on the show. She says she always prided herself on “when to get off.” Walters wonders if the Lucy Ricardo character could work today as well is it did 25 years ago. Lucy hints that people may be getting tired of “the new stuff” and want what they know and want to see again.
Gary Morton says that Lucy (the character) is seen all over the world and there is no limit when something is funny. Lucy says she always felt her audience needed a show that had a beginning, a middle, and a happy ending.
Lucy: “They're trying to make entertainment out of newsreels. What we see in news, which is not very happy these days. To me, that's not entertainment.”
Walters asks Lucy if she ever watches “I Love Lucy” Lucy says no, but that she sometimes runs across one turning the dial. She tells Walters about CBS's reluctance to accept Desi as her husband on TV. Lucy fully expected the show to end after a just year.
Walters: “They say you're very tough to work for.  Are you? Are you a perfectionist?”  Lucy: “Perfectionist? I have an attention to detail. That's the way I learned my craft.”
Tumblr media
Gary says Lucy tends to be a protective mother. Walters says that Lucy's onscreen and off-screen pregnancy was big news, getting bigger ratings than the inauguration of the President and the coronation of the Queen. Lucy says she wasn't aware of any of that because she was busy having the baby, but learned about it afterwards.
Walters wondered if she was worried about having a baby so late in life. Lucy says no one warned her about the risks. Her daughter was born by by C-section, so Lucy was in pain after the birth and cried with joy so much that holding her newborn child actually hurt.
Prodded by Walters, Lucy tells the story of first hearing that she was pregnant on the radio. Apparently, in 1950, radio gossip columnist Walter Winchell had spies in the lab and intercepted the results of Lucy's pregnancy test before the couple could be notified. Lucy lost the child.
Tumblr media
Walters wonders how Lucie and Desi Jr. differentiated between their parents' real life and their television lives. Gary says they eventually grew up and realized the difference. Lucy used the fantasy world of their show as a form of escape from reality. She says “I had to pretend, but it helped.”
Walters wraps up the interview (in the updated wrap-around segment) by saying that Lucy died in 1989, but that her legacy is as one of the greats of television history.

Confessions of a location free maverick - it's over!
Confessions of a location free maverick – it’s over! How the Pretend Cat and the Pet Rock are changing the landscape of my life. I find it deeply ironic and bizarre how I can go from travelling the world with ridiculously minimal belongings (even minimal for miss LIVE LIGHT, LIVE LARGE over here) and living mostly out of a suitcase for the past 2.5 years … to buying Tupperware, water containers, dishcloths, coffee plunger, bins and gasp of all gasps, kitty food – because I suddenly find myself with a “pretend” cat and a huge pet rock! Neither of which will fit in my suitcase, which can mean only one thing – a little home again.
Chances are you might have some insight into my motto, my life work and how I have been gallivanting around the world to speak, run writing retreats, masterminds and work with the YPO? And laze on beaches of course! Yet with this lifestyle comes the highest of global highs and the lowest of lonely lows.
Every decision we make has consequences on all sides. There is really no such thing as a decision that doesn’t have pro’s and con’s. That’s delusional. It’s just about choosing the ones that you most prefer, that bring you more joy and meaning, isn’t it? It’s not that any decision is better than any other one. And decisions are never usually forever are they? We get to choose and re-decide further down the line, whether about how we think or what we own, to what we do in the world and where we live.
I have been living with the consequence of choosing to have no home for the recent past. It’s a feeling of deliriousness combined with displacement. Sometimes it is truly a joyful experience, easy to broadcast on Instagram pics, carefully curated into an authentic feed, or a hopefully motivational post and pics of exotic food whilst lounging by the sea. New spaces, places and delights at every corner. Yet it’s not ALL wild, laugh-inducing adventures and Pollyanna playtime.
It’s also the polar opposite – sometimes a scary, wide open world knowing no one, needing to constantly be wondering where the next pit stop is, can I convert enough ZAR into USD to survive a northern currency, where will my work call me to (from Lagos, to Dubai to San Francisco), other people’s reactions to being “homeless” when I say I am #locationfree. Yes, but where is your home, Kate?
I have personally found that whilst my senses are constantly being awoken and titivated, it’s simultaneously a tad grueling on my body and takes me longer to adjust to new surroundings to feel totally integrated. I have stayed in the best of 5* hotels, to revolting homes I housesat (that really should have been a three week, massively paid declutter job). I do find it easy to feel at home in someone else’s space, but have become way more susceptible to the energy of the house and how it impacts me. So it has been in short, the past 2.5 years have been a profoundly intriguing, enlightening time.
Being a #locationfree maverick naturally takes some toll on my committed relationship with ENP and yet also provides us both with space to really miss each other. Even when I do make Lesvos, the world renowned Lesbian pilgrimage island, (where the 10th muse and lyrical poetess Sappho was born), my destination of choice. He doesnt batt an eyelid- and that tells you everything about him! Friends delight in my pics, tales and gifts, but also beg to know when I’m coming “home” – I remind them I don’t call SA ‘HOME’ anymore. You know how when you speak to people in the UK (yes Mum, that’s you!) and they bleat on about the weather? Well, pretty much every time I speak to a dear friend they cannot help themselves but ask, “so when are you in SA again”? I have done my best to implore them to not say when are you coming “home”. Or even when are you BACK. Those words imply it will suck me back into its clutches, and SA honestly is no longer home. It’s a beautiful and complex place that for many decades was my home, where I still work and see ENP and my friends. I have awesome clients there and … it is simply no longer my home! I am being called north again, and have been for the past 4 years, ever since I first traveled to the USA. So, I typically say I am simply where I am right now and thank God for the likes of Skype, Whatsapp and Zoom.
At the start of this process of packing up my home in JHB, I always knew I would be location free for a year at least; then after a year had flown by I had no desire for it to be any different; my travel trajectory was as delicious and busy for the year ahead, so I just kept at it. Living with 90% of my belongings with me, three boxes in storage and traveling to places MOSTLY in summer or the shoulder spring and autumn to obliterate the need for huge bulky clothes.
But towards the end of last year, even though I am in a beautiful, committed relationship to a man who just adores and trusts me to live my life with no betrayal to us, and vice versa, I found myself feeling somewhat lonely (whilst meeting new people everyday), restless (whilst constantly moving), bored (even though I see and experience more in day that some do in a year) and just a tad unsettled (yet this was my very own choosing wasn’t it?)
The irony of this insight is never lost on me.
Enter a pretend cat and bit pet rock!
It is not about needing to be in ONE PLACE forever; I am not that type. I have gypsy energy in my very DNA, and love traveling just so much. But after not having anywhere other than my heart and body to call “home” for 2.5 years, I was starting to inch towards the idea of a little space I could “claim” as my own. ENP is unraveling his life in SA too, and these global swallows need a new nest/s.
I remember the day I was housesitting the most GLORIOUS home right on the San Francisco bay, in Pointe Richmond and having this feeling of being so blessed by the beautiful home I find myself in whilst I travel, but I suddenly had this overwhelming longing to have a space for me. A space where I might be able to leave a costume and a pen, maybe even my art. A space I could imprint myself on. It was a little bit of a surprise. It also took the natural transition of my 50th Birthday in April this year to shift me into this next phase. I needed to close out some big commitments before I had the space for this phase.
So the logical heartwarming place for my first little space in the northern hemisphere was Greece. I am even toying with the idea of buying a home, but am rather just putting my feelers out this year. Getting to understand the lay of the land. What is it like to have another little base and how does that impact my life and me again? And others around me? And so, in the gorgeous, remote and truly authentic Greek village called Skala Eressos that I have been visiting for the past 3 years (with writers on our retreats), a space where I have built a community and with one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Greece, I found myself negotiating a contract for a light airy apartment for a year. A year!
Confession #1: It IS totally glorious to say I have a place I can call home EVEN though I will also “rent” it out to visitors, friends and colleagues. I have the coolest pet rock (see below) – my nan used to paint rocks so this is highly divine for me – but yikes, it’s a biggun, and will never fit into a case, so I guess I am destined to stay a while. See pic of beautiful rock complete with my name! It all came about when I asked my landlady if she had any door stoppers, a huge grin erupted on her face and she said she had a rock half painted, and she would complete it for me. All my favourite colours, the coolest of flamingos and my names emblazoned across it, lest I forget where I am.
Confession #2: Having a kitty on my bed again makes me deeply joyful. When my beautiful landlady said yes I could claim her little apartment as mine, she said I was an angel for her, but the truth is she is an angel for me. Letting me love her kitty, bringing me oregano bouquets, painting me my very own pet rock as a doorstop so I don’t wake the whole village when I sneak out to write my morning pages on the verandah, lending me a bike, fixing stuff I ask to be fixed and just being delightful – along with FANTASTIC English.
Confession #3: I am startlingly amused by just how insanely fast I wanted to buy “STUFF” Not a lot of stuff, for sure, but it is still amusing. And I want my Nan’s hand-made patchwork quilt here on my bed – NEXT TRIP! Unless you are coming to visit and will bring it with? And how Mum gifted me the most exquisite handmade, olive wood TAVLI – Backgammon set! Oh, the joys of a little place for STUFF!
Confession #4: I am plotting my return here – my coming BACK HOME. I have already started inviting friends here, seeing as I never pulled it off for my 50th  earlier this year– 51 seems just as fabulous a time to gather on an island! Perhaps I can also entice my Mum to visit a second time with the pretend promise to eat more meals at home to stretch the budget.
Confession #5: I fell off my bike and swore like a trooper – because my sundress was hitched around my thighs and I got stuck as I hurled myself towards the pavement. It was a “boy” bike with a big crossbar and so as my huge, white sun hat flew off my head when going down the hill, I panicked and tried to slam on breaks to run after my hat before it picked up pace across the fields, never to be seen again. I just couldn’t extrapolate my legs and dress in time and got caught up in a heap. Tears welled, words flowed and I cannot tell you the relief after I had embarrassing walked my bike home with a bleeding toe and bruised ego, grease filled legs and finally turned the corner and saw “My home”.
Confession #6: Kitty food is now on my shopping list again. And I have a pet brush. Everyone laughed at me when I said I wanted one, but I found it in the Euro shop, and this kitty just LOVES being fussed over! Every now and then it feels like a betrayal to my beloved Stripey, but Nikos is my “pretend cat”. He is not really mine; I know that – just that we get to love each other furiously when I am here. When I told Ms. S that I was letting Nikos, the #gingersnap cat sleep on my bed, she nearly fell off her own feet. You are crazy Kate Emmerson. And yes I am, but when I walked home last night after devouring the most delicious “orange pie” oozing with syrup and a creamy cappuccino to wash it down, my heart did a little skip when I saw Nikos waiting for me at the end of the road – a bit out of his usual comfort zone. My Greek is shocking, so I speak to him in English, (other than a strong reprimand of OCHE when he wants to get agro) and we ambled off down the road side-by–side, ready for a little cuddle.
Confession #7: Yes. I miss you, ENP. Every day! But you are in Russia at the world cup with all your Argentinian lads, doing what you love to do, and that makes me happy! Enough said we will entwine again in a few weeks when in the same country again.
Confession #8: I deeply love that my office of choice, Gialos on the platea,  has exceptionally kind owners, friendly kitties and the most heavenly view on the planet! Along with great coffee, conversation and a way to observe this little village and all its folk – from Drug dealer, to prostitute to writers, foreigners who return year after year after and the  locals getting ready for thier work day. A great place for writers to simply sit and observe…
With love from me, to you, from Skala Eressos and my new “home” –  for now x
(And yes, I will be IN South Africa for August and September for work :) )

The very moment we discovered Moulin Rouge was being made into a stage production, we KNEW we had to see it! Unfortunately, the debut occurred in Boston, which well, was expensive to fly to, but we were also, unsure of the ‘reviews’ for the show. It was decided, thereafter that whence it went to Broadway in NYC, we would make the trek. Thus, our adventure begins . . .
Our kick-off to NYC was not without it’s complications. My parents, fortunately, informed us that ‘work’ was being done on the blue line and therefore, offered a ride to an open station with which to catch the ‘el to the blue, then orange line (damn you Southwest for being so damn far). Rousing at 2:30 a.m. was fairly delirious due to Christmas Eve-ed sleep but we rallied as best we could and eventually arrived at Midway Airport with approximately 1/2 hour until boarding. It is at this point; we thanked the transportation Gods or rather, ourselves, for being pre-check TSA members as we quite literally waltzed through security in a matter of minutes. Booyah! Chicago to New York travel time is not terrible – approximately 2 hours. We amused ourselves by using the on-flight, Wi-Fi entertainment to watch Crazy Rich Asians, which was good enough to pass the time.
Off the plane and on our way to public transportation, I left all the work to Sharon who had watched a video about catching buses from the airport to travel into the city. First step, get a ticket to catch a bus to a connecting bus/train. Next – get on appropriate bus to take us to . . . oh wait – is this the correct bus? Yep, immediate confusion. Sharon’s phone kept re-routing which caused her ultimate reaction to be ‘let’s just go one more stop’ as we could see our pinpoint on a map begin to divert from our destination. Long story short, we got off in, who knows where, and caught an Uber already housing a very nice couple who bid us well in our travels once they departed.
We were dropped off at our first, essential stop – a gift and luggage store in Times Square to relieve ourselves of our burdensome baggage. Sketch-tastic to say the least but the concern grew less worrisome as we noticed a multitude of said shops along the streets of Times Square. Luggage-free, we headed to our first endeavor: Madame Tussauds Wax Museum! There was quite a line outside but surprisingly, it moved along quickly and we entered without a hitch (thanks Groupon). Naturally, we grabbed a bunch of awesome pictures – despite the fact that I was unfamiliar with a good portion of the figures we observed. It was delightful surprise to see a commemoration of Cats since we’d seen the production recently (refer to previous blog), however the best part of the entire exhibit was most definitely the Phantom of the Opera shtick where you could pretend you were singing as Christine and also stand/sit on a fake chandelier! Let me not forget the mirror maze as well which, at one point, I lost Sharon and careened into glass with my phone on several occasions.
Following our wax museum adventure, we walked next door to the conveniently situated Ripley’s exhibit (again, thanks Groupon). Now I’ve never, personally been a huge fan of these since I don’t care to reach much but I guess this is a Sharon nostalgia thing. In any case, it was pseudo interesting. We took a few pictures and Sharon disappointingly found a Zoltare machine that provided no physical fortune. There was a cool, trippy, tunnel in the middle of the exhibit, which was cool for a minute but nothing to write home about (irony). Towards the end of our walk through, it became pretty apparently that we were both STARVING. We had made reservations at a little French restaurant down the street; however, we were a bit early but proceeded there anyway.
Le Rivage was our first food stop for our trip! I did minimal research on this place but based on location, reviews, and the fact that they did a show pre-fix meal option, was pretty much sold. We were both pleasantly surprised that the restaurant appeared casual and ‘classic’ – if that makes sense. This place was definitely not ‘hopping’ and had a more ‘old-school’ feel to it that we both dig. Upon being seated at our table, I noticed a can-can picture in an adjoining seating area and made my way over there to grab some pictures. We pre-faced our meals with mimosas and indulged in a French Onion Soup Burger and Boeuf Bourguignon – both DELICIOUS! Swooning in culinary satisfaction, it was now time to get MORE physical uncomfortable. Up to this point, I have failed to mention our ingenious plan on packing our Moulin Rouge-designated outfits in our purses. A much-debated discussion, it made much more sense to dress sensibly for the plane ride and then change into said outfits right before the show – especially since mine involved a tulle skirt and corset! Post-meal, we both took turns walking downstairs to the restroom to change. I’m not sure how Sharon’s transition went but it was quite the production getting in a corset and tulle shirt in a tiny, bathroom stall. Once I excited the stall and begin adding my accessories at the sink, an older lady entered and quite literally gawked at me. She complimented me and just continued to stare before mentioning that she’d heard the producer of the movie Moulin Rouge raved that the stage production was ‘spectacular.’ Transition complete, I headed upstairs to rejoin Sharon and was met with silenced stares all around the dining room. Quite honestly, I did NOT think the outfit was THAT unusual. It probably didn’t help that I was filming the entire area for the duration of the stare-down. Almost felt like I should have choreographed something as part of my exit! Next time.
Get-ups secured, we were now set and ready for Moulin Rouge situated just about a block or two down the street. It was about an hour til show time but upon arriving at the Al Hirschfield Theatre, there was already a line down the block. For the next 40ish minutes, we stood in line with beaming hot sun and bellowing scalpers antagonizing our wills to live. At one point, I peered into the restaurant we stood outside of and saw a girl conveniently dressed in what I’d consider Moulin Rouge attire. She would eventually be seated nearby us like some groupie conspiracy. Once inside the theatre, complete chaos ensued. Sharon immediately went to grab some very expensive sippy-cupped drinks while I perused the gift-shop area – convinced I would pay anything for something Moulin Rouge-inspired. But a $100 hoodie was not in my budget. So I opted for a magnet. When we finally entered the seating area, our minds and eyes were BLOWN! The stage was BEYOND gorgeous! I was most impressed and grateful that everyone was allowed to take as much video and pictures as they liked – although that eventually became annoying when we attempted to take a selfie with no one in the background (impossible)! We received MANY compliments on our outfits and ended up sitting towards some like-minded Moulin Rouge fans who raved about it being their favorite movie. As the minutes neared show time, performers began slowly slinking about the stage in scantily clad outfits – staring Legolasy at the audience.
Once the show was underway, it was magic – but with some drawbacks. Sharon and I would later have a full-blown, extended conversation about the show but to summarize our feelings on it, it could have been better or perhaps, different. As purists, we honestly just wanted a replication of the movie on stage. This, was not as such. The main story line was there, sure, but the adaptation felt a bit forced – almost TOO much freedom was taken with it, I fear. To be more specific and assuming you’re familiar with the movie, the original does throw-backs to a few contemporary songs. This show took that concept and multiplied it by a thousand ie there were a lot MORE snippets of a lot more RECENT songs which, again, I feel lost any sense of integrity. Every time a throw-back clip was initiated, audience members laughed in recognition, which to me, makes a mockery of the movie. Sharon internally lost her shit when Satine began singing Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ and I couldn’t agree more. I wont knock it and say there weren’t SOME good additions – for instance, Christian singing Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ but all in all, it didn’t work for either of us and I’m fairly sure we were the only ones in the theatre feeling that way.
With a slightest defeatist attitude, we made our way back to the gift and luggage store to re-burden ourselves with our belongings. It was at this point, Sharon realized one of the wheels on her luggage bag was defective and not moving. Scraping her back down the street, she ultimately began carrying her entire case in her arms like a massive, dumb baby. While we were, fortunately, not going too far, the walk, still in our uncomfortable outsides, felt long. We eventually arrived at our next stop: Bibble & Sip which is an ADORABLE coffee/tea/pastry shop that is Alpaca themed! With the combination of luggage frustration and scrunchiness, Sharon remained in the distance while I got in line to grab some goods to go. I opted for a Good Luck Hazelnut Alpaca dessert and Black and White Mouse cake which were, oh my god, AMAZING!!
Our desserts weren’t consumed until we arrived at our Airbnb which again, was trekked to under blistering heat, faulty luggage and air-constricting clothing. But we made it! Sharon had found this joint situated at 50th and 3rd Avenue in East Manhattan. The ‘renter’ was a Japanese man who, based off of the amount of signage and locks on things, appeared to be a bit OCD but it tolerable. We had a bed and couch, ability to access a/c and well, minimal tv capabilities. All in all, not a bad set-up and for the price and location, no complaints! After arriving, we changed and ‘regrouped’ for a minute before deciding NOT to venture out for a late-night, rooftop silent-disco we had acquired tickets for. Instead, we decided to slum it for the remainder of the evening – and by ‘slumming,’ I mean grabbing drinks and getting some dinner.
During the course of our very, extensive research, one of us had come across a place called Ophelia Lounge that was conveniently located a few blocks from our Airbnb. We headed there for a celebratory, evening drink and were very impressed with the elevated view, delicious cocktails and unpretentious hospitality! We had only wished it had been later in the evening for an even more spectacular, night view. Following our drinks, we attempted to pre-order our food for pick-up but the restaurant we called was busy so we walked over to Hide-Chan for ramen that I’d read wonderful things about. The restaurant was confusingly situated next to another Asian restaurant that we accidentally venture into first. We then headed next door to the ascending stairway at which time, the hostess informed us they didn’t do ‘take away’ requests. Huh. Odd. We then asked if the adjoining restaurant was there was well but couldn’t exactly make out the response but upon going next door, the men was most definitely, NOT ramen. We then decided it was in our best interest to hike back UP the stairs and just eat there and I’m very glad we did. This was the first time I’d ever seen/ordered garlic butter edameme and it was AMAZING! This was also the first time I’d been asked about the firmness level and shape of my noodles. In any case, food was STELLAR. My only complaint would be the SUPER boisterous, young Asian men seated next to us who were having the time of their LIVES! Ramen in bellies, we headed home and passed the eff out. Day one = complete!
The next morning, we roused fairly early with plans of walking to Central Park, which was about 30 minutes away. After heading out, we grabbed coffee at a Dunkin Donuts and made our away to Central Park Zoo to see their red pandas and penguin feeding. The zoo, while quaint, was comfortable and their employees, very helpful. While in line for our tickets, Sharon inquired if there were any bats and were told yes! Making our rounds once inside, we up the bats first which was nothing short of a glassed, dark room with flittering figures. At one point, I asked Sharon to use her phone flashlight to see if the bats were hanging on the ceiling and sure enough, they were! Walking clock-wise, we hit up the red pandas next but sadly, saw nothing. We continued on our way to came across the seals that were super adorable and rambunctious. We then circled back to the red pandas and were pointed out one, hidden and barely moving, shrouded in foliage. Our last stop off was the children’s petting zoo, which contained guess what – an Alpaca – and some sheep’s that were cool. Sharon was offended the Alpaca walked away from her after supplying some food.
After our fill of animals, we now headed through Central Park in order to see Belvedere Castle. On the way, Sharon bought a hot dog from a vendor who attempted to up-charge her. She was offended with both the hot dog and the altercation. Once we reached the castle, we were both pretty underwhelmed. The joint was swarming with people and it was a clusterfuck attempting to ascend the narrow, winding staircase to get to the view-top. Continuing on our way through the park, we were now headed towards Astro West Fine Minerals, Fossils and Meteorites shop, however finding an exit out of the park became problematic. We kept walking, soaked in our own, hot juices, for what felt like forever. On several occasions I suggested scaling the walls in order to reach actual ‘street.’ And of course, once we asked where an exit was, it was a few feet ahead of us.
Making our way to the streets, we eventually found Astro West Fine Minerals, Fossils and Meteorites, which, our sole purpose was to split a geode for a souvenir. I had called the shop a few days prior to inquire if they had an ‘abundant’ available since I’d read complaints about them being out of stock. When we arrived, there were maybe 15 available – all ugly blobs situated inside a marked barrel. I selected one based off solely based on its symmetry and we watched the machine in action that was really just a glorified saw. Once split, the attendant showed us the inside which he described as a ‘light blue.’ I’d describe it as a bunch of bullshit, personally. Definitely NOT worth $25. But I guess you win some, you lose some.
Next on the agenda was Grand Central Station. Arriving in style via Uber, we immediately made our way upstairs to the Campbell Bar, which is allegedly haunted. Our bartender was pretty awesome and gave us some free shots. The decor was outstanding. To keep on schedule, we then headed back downstairs to find the Jacque Torres Chocolate shop on ground level. On our way, I caught an amazing ceiling in my peripheral view and followed it to an outstanding, horoscopial view! We then continued on our original journey, found the chocolate shop and nibbled on some free samples before grabbing another Uber for our next venture!
Remember Stomp? Yes, I know, it’s definitely been a minute. I haven’t thought or heard of it in a very long time but it is most definitely alive and kicking! I should know. We bought tickets. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect with this show – not that I wasn’t familiar with the basis for the show – but the longevity of its existence made me a bit leery. When we arrived, we were told no photos or videos were allowed. Ok, fine. We took our seats at the far, back end of the theatre but were eventually upgraded for ‘good behavior’ to the second row! Once the show began, I was in COMPLETE awe. I think that a good portion of the show, I was imagining myself a part of it – like, I actually started considering trying to audition for it! I was blown away by the talent and attitudes of all the performers. Everyone appeared to be having such a good time with each other but also as solo performers. Talk about an inspiration! Next time you’re in NYC, definitely make a point to see the show!
Just around the corner from Stomp was our highly anticipated dinner reservation at Beetle House! Which reminds me, I dressed for the occasion – ie I bought and wore green, light-up suspenders for a good portion of the day. In any case, we were far too early upon arrival and as such, loitered outside the restaurant a bit. Eventually we were let in and seated. The restaurant was cool, yes, but very tiny and a bit understated for what I had anticipated. We had both seen video clips promoted the restaurant that entailed costumed performers. We saw none of this, which sure, it was still relatively ‘early’ but nonetheless, the emo-inspired work staff didn’t really convey much of a Burton feel to me. Our meal option was a pre-fix appetizer and main course that we were both pretty underwhelmed with. We did order some cocktails, which apparently all come with dry ice for major points for smokey drinks! All in all, disappointed. I’d go back – but only for the drinks.
Following our dissatisfied meal, we then took a transit-commute from hell in hopes of reaching Brooklyn. After being given opposing directions from pedestrians and Sharon’s wonky, ever-changing GPS assistance, we eventually ended up at a witch store and then eventually at Urban Jungle  – a thrift store. Again, unimpressed with this underwhelming Ragstock wanna-be, we continued onto Brooklyn Cider House. This place, well, seemingly pleasant, left us wanting in terms of customer service AND cider. Our waiter was less than helpful with recommendations and most of the drink options appeared to be ‘dry.’ As our spirits continued to dwindle, we then headed to the bookend for the evening – Theatre XIV for burlesque! And if you haven’t yet caught the trend, we were again, far too early to be admitted so we walked down the street to a bar called the Johnson for some $6 ‘Painkillers’ ie. frozen, pina colorado concoction. Four drinks later and claw-machine defeated, we were buzzed back to a state of satisfaction. Making our way back to the theatre, we entered and marveled at the Fifty Shaded Wonderland surrounding us.
Adorned to the nines, this show, Queen of Hearts, was eccentric, to say the least! I have NEVER seen such a mind-boggling burlesque show in my LIFE! There were obvious, classically trained dancers involved, not to mention, MANY male performers. Dancing, singing, hooping – there was no end to the extravagances our eyes beheld. Speaking of, we spent a good portion of the show staring at the couple seated in front of us which entailed a very uncomfortably, molesty dude who we could only assume, was sloppy rich. We discussed trying to corner his companion in the bathroom to find out what the deal was but we were both far too lazy. Sharon bought me an expensive, gingery cocktail that was god-awful. We followed up the rest of the night’s consumption with canned ciders from which we both got pretty blitzed! While we awaited our Uber, we saw the aforementioned creepoid with his girl being photographed by police officers. We can only begin to wonder whatever came of them but I’d be very confident picking him out of a lineup. For the duration of our Uber ride home and still beaming from booze, we spent the entire ride arguing over the virtual trivia game situated in the backseat area. Sharon doesn’t recall giving me bad/wrong answers and/or giving me crap for being incorrect but it was boisterous and most likely, very annoying, fun.
Ah, good o’ hungover Monday. Yikes! With a slightly rough-start to the morning, we took our time getting ride in order to avoid the hectic, rush-hour commuter traffic. After pre-GPSing our route, we successfully public transited to Supermoon Bakehouse for some blueberry and Pomegranate croissants! Sharon was mind-blown by this place – simply based on not only the aesthetic peel of their goods but also, the deliciousness! High recommendations for this joint – although, I’d suggest taking your food items to go since the tables and chairs were that of children.
Continuing our route, we now headed towards what would appear to be Chinatown for a confusing stop-off at a gorgeous, Jewish Temple museum called Eldridge Street. I’d literally come across this place during research and noted that Mondays were their pay-what-you-can. Being non-religious and certainly non-Jewish, my interest was all about the glorified ambience and were were NOT disappointed. There was a calm, safe, feel to the temple. Definitely one of the more beautiful things I’d high recommend when visiting NYC.
Next on the roster? Catacombs! Oh but wait, this isn’t what it sounds like, unfortunately. The description was giving us Catacombs by Candlelight, which we both assumed, would somehow involve ghosts. This was not as such. We were met with quasi-interesting, New York history involving politicians and rich families that were memorialized in the underground passageways. The highlight of the tour was the Australian couple we spoke with briefly about koalas – duh. I’m sure under different circumstances (not tired, hung-over, bored, hot, wanting ghost stories), one would find this tour highly interesting (my mother) but ‘twas not as such. The tour even ran a bit over-time so we bounced early to catch an Uber to our lunch at Thai Villa.
I researched this restaurant and loved it solely based on its gorgeousness. Unfortunately, we caught this place during the boisterous, lunch rush and weren’t entirely able to enjoy any sense of calm. We could barely speak due to the deafening sound – including the pretentious, vapid couple next to us. I did not enjoy my pai thai but was also suffering from post-laxative discomfort, to be fair. We ate as quickly as possible and headed out towards the next item of our agenda: Rose Wine Mansion.
Once again, with reservations at 2pm and us far too early, we killed a minute or two buying an I Love New York, pink onesie for Bear (yeah, yeah, he loves it) from a souvenir shop before standing restlessly in line for admittance.
Tumblr media
When we were finally hustled in, accompanied by an ear-drum throbbing, security alarm, we took an elevator to the entrance of the exhibit. As we were basically the first people in ‘line,’ we got first dibs on every single room. We also didn’t care too much about the ‘interactive elements’ of most rooms, which killed a lot of time. We pressed on fairly quickly as we are want to do, indulging in our favorite, Cleopatra-endorsed red wine, Banfi Rosa Regale. Case in point, we drank some last night (8/2/2019) as you can buy it at Binny’s (SO good)! Other than that and taking a bunch of free photo-booth pictures post-exhibit, it was a quick in and out for us.
Making our way down the street, we stopped off at the free Houdini Museum situated, strangely, inside a high-rise building. The ‘museum’ was quite small, though we were told it was the second largest in the world. We took a once-around stroll while some magic nerds exchanged card tricks in the center of the room. Disinterest in tact, we caught another Uber with a delightful, Asian man who almost got pulled over for running a light but played off his foreignness to get out of it and eventually showed me his uncompleted dragon tattoo. He dropped us off near Enchantments – an occult store we’ve previously ordered, personalized candles. The store was awesome – cute, black kitties sleeping and hilarious, witchy employees who seems very down to earth. We requested personalized, carved candles and hung out for the duration of their creation. Once obtained, we headed over to one of the many bars on our roster for the afternoon: Mother of Pearl. Hawaiian-themed, this joint, wasn’t, again, open when we arrived so we pre-drank at a hookah lounge down the street. Once we re-attempted Mother of Pearl, was ordered their well-known ‘Shark attack’ drinks which I found unimpressive. I also can’t recall what type of alcohol they entailed but definitely, not my jam. Our bartender though, was pretty awesome.
The evening continued with an Uber back to where we had been for the Rose Mansion for two more bars: The Magic House Rooftop Bar & Lounge and The Fleur Room. Now the Magic House Rooftop Bar & Lounge sounded and looked very impressed from the videos I’d watched. There’s rotating carousal seats, mini-golf and an awesome view. But in all reality, the in-person was not up to snuff. All the carousal seats were ‘reserved,’ the ‘mini golf’ consisted of maybe four rounds revolving around sexified animal statues and the drinks were, well, at least mine, expensive and just terrible. Waste of time and money – not to mention all the effort to actually get UP to the joint! Security is completely elaborate and unnecessary – I felt like the goddamn FBI was running the entire thing! Not a fan. Next up – The Fleur Room. To be fair, we were both kind of at our wit’s end at this point in time. Once we made our way up to the bar, again, beautiful, poshy views and the decor was GORGEOUS but after looking at the drink menu, I just couldn’t do it. I was super over the expensive, elaborate drinks that sounded and inevitably, tasted like garbage. Maybe I’m not sophisticated enough to get the appear or maybe these places are just trying too hard. Either way, we refused to spend more money on drinks we’d end up hating and just took our necessary pictures and videos to supply to ya’ll.
As our final stop-off and NOT on our original agenda (we cut a bunch of stuff), Sharon researched a pizza joint nearby our Airbnb for an easy, chill dinner at the home front. She came across Patsy’s Pizzeria. I called in a large, garlic and cheese pizza for pick-up during which time; a lovely Jamaican woman named Diana who complimented my tattoos and pants accosted me. This woman kept on talking about her brother being a dance choreographer and professional in Milwaukee and eventually tried to network us. I gave minimal interesting and effort in the exchange on account of exhaustion and hunger. Eventually, pizza was on hand and we made it back home to consume said pizza that was actually pretty decent.
Our final day in NYC was quite a doozy. We woke up fairly early and again, killed time to avoid the rush hour, commute traffic. Luggage in tow, we caught some pre-GPS-ed public transit to NYC’s Magic Jewelry to get aura photographs. After once again, standing in line, waiting for the place to open, a little crowd began to form behind us. Eventually, one snap and a brief explanation later, we were done! Side note: Sharon is now obsessed with purchasing the equipment to start her own business. We then walked over to the nearby Ghostbusters Fire Station that became a clusterfuck due to the gapping tour crowd and the fact that the firehouse is ACTIVE. We stood and waited for a truck to pull into it before snapping a few pictures and heading immediately away.
After once again, catching pre-GPS-ed public transit, we now headed towards of lunch-stop: Cafe Colette. This place got awesome reviews and also had beautiful pictures of the inside. When we arrived, the staff obligingly took our luggage from us for storage. I was once again, underwhelmed by the atmosphere, however, the food was definitely on point! Sharon apparently ate some orgasmic chicken sandwich while I consumed some delicious, fish tacos. We were both quite satisfied. Trudging along with our luggage we continued on our way to the Williamsburg Hotel for their Hightea Teapot cocktails we’d seen advertised videos for. When we arrived at the bar, our bartender, Angelo, advised that it was not available during weekdays. After a polite plea by Sharon, he agreed to make us a cocktail anyway which we shared and was MOST delicious! With time to kill and dessert on my brain, I suggested we find a place for dessert. Sharon quickly googled a nearby French pastry shop by the name of Caprices by Sophie. We shared a delightful, chocolate éclair before ultimately deciding that we should forgo any additional, scheduled plans and head straight to the airport.
One very long Uber ride later, we were at LaGuardia several hours early for our flight. Once we again, fast-tracked through security via Pre-check TSA and began to get settled, Sharon noticed our flight had been canceled! And queue confusion and anxiety. Never have I had this happen to me before. As we had already checked into our flight, I was unable to attempt a reschedule on my phone. We ended up lining up at the Southwest desk in order to speak with an attendant. Throughout the chaos, we realized there was an earlier flight boarding for Chicago. With attempts and determining if the flight was booked, Sharon called Southwest and was told, they could not advise as such. We were, safe-net, booked into a later flight that would eventually connect in St. Louis with an arrival in Chicago at midnight; however, we were still hoping to hope on this flight about to leave. Eventually, amidst the chaos and confusion and annoying and anxiety, we were allowed onto the earlier flight home which, with it’s own delays; brought us home at approximately the same time we were originally scheduled to arrival. The hellish commute involved sitting on the runway for takeoff for god knows how long and my discomfort with a very antsy, obnoxious, Alabamian seated next to me. Despite the very, very long commute, the dadness grabbed us at the Montrose blue-line, accompanied with Bear whose distress meowing ironically comforted me. When we reached our wonderful, sweet, home, we showered to rid ourselves of the New York stink, downed some food and barely absorbed some background television.
It’s crazy to think about how fast-paced Chicago is and yet, New York feels even faster! Or perhaps it’s the abundance of things and people and the distance between places that makes it feel so much more arduous. It could also have to do with our inclinations of packing in as much funness as possible into every single trip. Regardless, Chicago was most definitely missed. We were a part of you, New York, New York, but you can keep your hot, street garbage.
Where the Streets Have Hot Garbage The very moment we discovered Moulin Rouge was being made into a stage production, we KNEW we had to see it!

This Week in Writing
(Take 2)
I tried to post this last night but Tumblr gave me all sorts of trouble and I wasn’t in the mood to fight it. (It won that round, let’s face it!) So here we go again!
I received 3 critiques for my original story, all of them very positive and all of them with constructive thoughts I need to take into account re: action. The emotion was well received and each one loved my writing and had all good things to say about that. Woo hoo!
July is Camp NaNo so I’ll be setting this story aside to focus on another story, then in August I’ll tackle Book 1 again. I’m just so thrilled by all the positive feedback!
On a fic-front:
I Will... is nearly finished! I have some tweaks to make and then send it over to my beta, Mrs. Bertucci, so I’m not sure about an update this week but I’m very pleased with how it turned out. And for those who follow it, yes, the next chapter is a twisty doozy of a take on the Master.
Soldier’s Solstice, formerly known as Once Upon a Time on His Beach, based on an awesome manip by @rose--nebula is over the halfway mark. I gave her the choice of posting now or waiting, and she left it up to me. Honestly, I'm just more comfortable posting once the story is complete so I don’t feel pressured or find glaring plot mistakes I can’t go back and fix (which may still happen but it’s less likely to this way!)
Once I finish these 2 stories to my satisfaction, I’ll move on to the other WIPs I have glaring at me. Your options for stories that are started but not finished are:
1. Spanning the Stars--Jack and Idris are dimension hopping to match-make Rose and the Doctor, but on their first stop, Jack runs into a person from his past. (angsty).
2. Don’t Stop Me Now @zoebelle9 prompted me: “Shake what you got. Wait, I mean the- no don’t stop!“ for Ten x Rose? (Exactly what it sounds like in all its smutty goodness!)
3. It’s a Beautiful Day Nine/Rose based on the prompt from @kelkat9 said: “It’s a beautiful day to question everything.” Nine/Rose can be DW or AU :) (Cracky, campy goodness!)
4. Tau Theta Eight/Rose interlude to my We Are Never Alone series wherein Rose pops up just as Eight is drinking that Pythia potion to regenerate him and stops him from making a mistake and change time like the Sisters of Pythia  want. It’s a 50th Anniversary re-write. (Angst, lots of Doctors, fluffy Eight/Rose moments, rewrite)
What are you working on? How’s your week going? What do you hope for this week? Writing or otherwise?

I was hit by a car. Which insurances should be reported?
Okay... I was driving my parents car to work. I am 19. No tickets or crashes since I was 15 and a half. I was rear ended when I stopped for an ambulance. My parents have insurance on that car, but I am not on their policy. I did have my mother's permission to use the vehicle. I have my own liability insurance but on a car that I sold several months ago. I maintained that insurance just in case anything happened. The woman that hit me immediately admitted blame. She also admitted blame to the officer that came out to see us. In fact, she cut him off to admit blame. I hope I am good to go as far as any sort of payment for damages. I understand if I get ticketed for not being on their policy... I just don't want to have to pay for my parent's car out of pocket, I can't afford that. Do all three party's insurances need to be reported? My dad is trying to tell me that my insurance is the only one that needs be reported as well as the woman's that hit me. I disagree. I think that all three need to be - but he's older and wiser than me. I think he just doesn't want his rate to increase so he's trying to make me call the woman and tell her to not report their insurance. Fml, i'm confused. thanks.""

Car insurance company discriminate against me because I was not born in the UK?
I had a quote for car insurance through a well-known national company. They were aware I had a UK licence for 5 years and had no convictions, claims etc. I rang and spoke to a representative and she confirmed the quote. The following day I decided to accept and called them. We went through my information and the agent said, so you were born in the UK? I said no, I am a UK citizen but I was born abroad. The quote then went up by 200 !!!! I took issue and spoke to a manger who said this was legitimate when I told him I was certain it was illegal since the only information that had changed was my place of birth, he eventually said he would honour the original quote. I then bought the policy with a one-off payment. Insurance is a racket and I don't think they should be alllowed to get by with this. Car insurance very expensive?
Hi I live in Miami fl and I am currently insured with Estrella insurance part of uaic. My car insurance costs 264 a month. They told me that after 6 months it would go down but I don't think it will go down much. I have a 1994 accord lx 4 door. I don't see why it costs so much for insurance. I just started driving in December but the car is listed under my mothers name with me as a driver and her as the primary. She has been driving about 15 years and has a good record. We have full coverage because the last checked for us and this actually costs less then the lesser coverage for some reason. I was thinking about changing insurance because I think it is overpriced. Can anyone offer any advice? Such as maybe Whether this is actually a normal rate to pay? Or what other insurance I should try out

Help with Car Insurance/License!?!?
Okay, so I'm a 17 year old girl in michigan. I am planning to take my road test soon and then get my license. I have divorced parents and my grandfather on my moms side is going to buy me a car and keep it in his name. He is going to put me as the primary driver on this car and pay for the insurance. My dad has been extremely annoying about this situation, saying that his car insurance will go up since I live here, so I need to know if it will or not. The people I have talked to so far say that it won't since I am not a driver on his car or his wife's. I've been wanting to get my license so I can get a job and whatnot for over a year now, so please help me with your experience. Thank You :)""

Home insurance wants to raise dwelling coverege?
I purchased a townhome in March of 2013 for $183k in Florida. It is in a 200-unit subdivision that just completed all construction and sold out all last remaining units a few months ago. When I signed up for home insurance, the insurance company set my dwelling coverage to $183k. I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. I just find it strange that I'm paying for an insurance service and the insurance company decides what the replacement cost is, not me. Even though it doesn't affect them.""

Medical Insurance Question?!?
I'm 24, and I've been reading a lot of posts online about people who have many health ailments and do not have insurance to get treated or go to the ER then have a massive bill afterwards. I don't understand why these individuals are not hunting around for the cheapest medical insurance they can find prior. There are individual plans out there, directly through the insurance companies, also family plans. You can pick and choose your premiums/deductibles/co-pays, hunt around for what suits your needs best. The single plans especially, can be and most of the time are, affordable. I don't understand why people do not apply for basic health insurance that would cover them in an emergency, or for general routine health-care. Premiums can be as low as 60-100 a month for a single person. Please can someone explain to me why these people are not taking advantage of what is out there? Or even possibly applying for the government assistance plans if they're not employed, especially after an ER visit with no insurance? This is an honest question. Thanks""

I'm 19 and MassHealth is being a b**** and canceling my insurance. I got no job and I'm a full time student. Is there anyway to get insurance like this? I mean, Massachusetts must have something for people like me. Anyone else having this problem and have a solution? If so it would really help.""
Average teen male's car insurance cost?
I'm 18 years old, I'm a male and i would like to get a car insurance by myself. I know you need more information, but i just want an estimate. I don't have a car yet, but I'm planning on buying a used car. I have straight A's so i would be able to qualify for the discount""
How much will my car insurance be as a new driver?
I'm learning to drive as a necessity for a new job, but I am struggling to get a reliable estimate of the insurance premium I should expect once I have a car. I know that nobody will be able to give me a precise figure as it depends on so many variables, but I wondered if anyone would know what to put into a quote generator to get something accurate? I'm female, in the UK, 27 years old and will need a cheap and cheerful 5 door hatchback. Unfortunately I don't know enough about engine sizes and that sort of thing to know if I'm answering the questions on the form realistically. I tried compare the market and got a cheapest quote of 3,700 per annum - does this sound right? I know it will be expensive but even so that seems very high for a 1999 Vauxhall Corsa! (the car I used to get the quote). I do realise this is a very subjective question but any advice is greatly appreciated - at the moment it is looking like I won't be able to take up a dream job offer as all I will be doing is working to pay for a car that I oly got in order to take the job :(""
How will a 30+ day lapse in insurance coverage affect switching insurance companies.?
I was with State Farm and they suddently raised my insurance from 87 dollars (this is liability and renter's insurance) to $117 to 200+. I was never able to pay that amount at once seeing as I am a student with a part time job. I have recently been looking for a new insurance company and notice they are asking about lapses in coverage. I have not had car insurance (and not been able to drive)since December 10th. How will this affect my next insurance rates.
Where can I get affordable health insurance for an infant?
I'm having a baby around the first week of December, and I need to figure out how best to set up health insurance for her without going bankrupt. I looked into Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, and to be eligible for a child-only plan, the baby has to be atleast one year old. For us to get a family plan the cost is absolutely through the roof, more than our monthly income, and even then the child is only covered from 6 weeks of age. Does anyone know of any companies that will insure a baby from birth, without the parents having to be insured? I'm giving birth at a birthing center, and one of the terms of care is that I have to take the baby to a pediatrician within 72 hours of birth. No decent pediatrician will accept us without insurance. I think we may actually be eligible for Medicaid, but I don't want to go that way because high quality doctors don't accept that around here. So can someone please suggest a company that I can go to to insure my baby affordably, in Florida.""
Car Insurance in the UK?
I am not a UK Resident , I am here in the UK from Australia for 5 months on Holidays . This is my forth trip here and after the first time when I hired a car for 7 weeks at a cost of 1400.00 pounds i found out that it would be much better to buy a car as I was going to be here for 5 months. A few days ago i took my rent-a-car back the i had for 7 days and cost me 150.00 pounds , I found a car to buy at a cost of 1200.00 pounds but first went looking to find someone to Insure the car . I spent overs 2 hrs on the phone and there was on one that would do it for me apart from one . I have 3rd party insurance only for this car and at a cost of 1230.00 pounds for 12 months . I am at a loss as to WHY i have to pay this amount and WHY no one will do it . MY Question is why is it that there no question asked when i hire a car for as lond as i like and am covered be insurance BUT if I try to buy a car and have it Insured that is a joke , Am I a diferent driver if it is my one car ?""
Car insurance for first car?
hello! How much did you paid for car insurance at the first time when you get your first car?
How much will my insurance go up after I've gotten a speeding ticket?
Alright here is the deal, this Monday i got pulled over by this idiot cop who gave me a speeding ticket for going something like 8-10 mph over...I'm 17 going on 18 and have had my license for about a year and a half or longer. I have had no prior tickets, violations, ect. It was a 75 dollar fine which im paying....but im really worried about my insurance, my parents pay it, and i havn't told them about the ticket, im just going to pay it...so my question is...will they notice a dramatic change in my insurance rates? for one speeding ticket? oh and also, i live in idaho...i know these things vary by state.""
""I damaged my car, i got a quote off the garage, and the insurance said they will pay,?""
so i let the garage send a quote and the insurance said i can leave my car in, but now i have found another garage nearer to my house and he will match the quote, plus repair it at weekend , so i dont need the car. can i change to this garage .. i live in Ireland thanks""
Which Car insurance would i preferred?
I want best insurance on my car, there are many types of insurance, which insurance is good for me, can you suggest me.

AO3  TSP
An Elizabethan jailer pushed the three Doctors and Rose into a cell. “Come on, you lot, get in there.” When all four were in, he slammed the door closed.
The bowtied Doctor bent down and picked a small metal rod off the floor. He immediately set about scratching into a stone support. “Three of us in one cell? That's going to cause some nasty anomalies if we don't get out soon.”
The pinstriped Doctor’s gazed bounced from his older self to Rose and back again. He asked the other man somewhat curtly, “What are you doing?”
“Getting us out.”
“That’s gonna help?”
“I’m sending a message to a friend. She’ll know what to do with it.”
The wartime Doctor wandered over to the door and began examining it with his sonic.
Rose kicked at the ground while nervously stealing looks at her second Doctor. He had his hands in his pockets and was looking at her with desperate need while trying to appear not to.
The oldest Doctor momentarily stopped his scratching. “Oh, would you both just talk to each other.” He grumbled under his breath as he went back to his task. “Never thought I’d ever say it, but bloody Harkness was right.”
The Doctor and Rose looked at each other, surprised at being called out by one of his selves, before Rose broke out in giggles. The Doctor, not realizing how starved he’d been for the sound of her laughter, walked up and gave her an exuberant hug. He lifted her from her feet and spun her around, making her laugh harder. When he settled her back on the ground, he couldn’t bring himself to pull away. The Doctor had his face buried in her shoulder, breathing in her scent. Rose ran her hands in circles over his back.
“How...how are you here? You’re...I tried everything...I couldn’t...it’s impossible.”
“Back in Pete’s World, the stars were going out. An’ we built this, er, this travel machine. Called it, um, a dimension cannon...so that I, well, so I could…”
The Doctor pulled back enough so that he could see her face while gently asking, “What?”
“So I could come back.” The Doctor grinned brilliantly. “Shut up. Anyway, it didn’t work at first, but then suddenly the Void was dying and the walls between dimensions started to collapse. An’ that’s when it began to work. It was completely random, where I’d land. So many different dimensions. I stumbled across parallel versions of just about everyone I know. But never myself or you. Well, except in this one pocket universe, were you...”
“Pocket universe?”
She took a deep breath and plastered on a smile. “Nevermind. ‘S not important right now. Anyway, it was Mickey who thought of using my TARDIS key to lock us on to the right dimension. Had a couple of near misses after that, showin’ up jus’ after you’d left an’ the like, before finally runnin’ into you.” Rose pointed at the youngest of the Doctors. “That you.”
“Why didn’t you have him bring you to me?” His voice held a little bit of hurt, no matter how hard he tried to hide it.
Rose ran her thumb up and down his sideburns. “He needed me.”
His hand covered hers as he leaned into her palm, his eyes fluttering shut. “I need you.”
“Doctor, you know what he’s goin’ through, I couldn’t leave him. But I’m coming back to you...before you know it. I still need help with the stars goin’ out, an’ then I have a promise to keep. Forever, yeah?”
For one shining moment, the Doctor put aside his fears of their disparate lifespans, and allowed the idea of forever with Rose Tyler to wash over him. He closed his eyes and captured her lips in a desperate kiss.
They parted briefly. “Rose, I-” She crushed her mouth against his.
When she next gasped for breath, she assured him, “I know. Me too.” She dragged him back into their kiss.
Rose vaguely heard the other two Doctors arguing about the door and molecules and sub-atomic harmonic resonance, but she let their voices wash over her as she reacquainted herself with the Doctor in her arms.
Rose was brought back to reality by the need to breathe. The Doctor’s grip around her waist had gotten tighter and tighter the longer she stood in his arms. “Too tight.”
“Oh! Sorry!” He loosened his hold but kept his arms encircling her.
The pinging of the metal rod hitting the floor and the oldest Doctor arguing with his youngest self drew their attention.
“Oi! Chinny?”
The Doctor holding Rose nodded. “Yeah, you do have a bit of a chin.”
Before the eldest Doctor could let loose against his wartime self, Clara barged through the door nearly stumbling and clutching at the vortex manipulator around her wrist.
The eldest Doctor asked, “How’d you get in here?”
“It wasn't locked.”
He wrung his hands. “Right.”
Clara gestured at the other men in the room. “So they’re both you, then, yeah?”
“Yes.”
She grinned wickedly at the Doctor who still had his arms wrapped around Rose’s waist. “Nice suit.”
He beamed at her and adjusted his tie. “Thanks.” Rose rolled her eyes, but slipped her hand into his with a smile.
“And Rose.” Clara waved that the other woman. “You were totally right about the way it makes his bum look.”
The Doctor preened at the compliment and waggled his eyebrows at Rose.
Rose looked between the Doctor and the young woman. “You...I’m sorry do we know each other?”
Clara shot a panicked look at her Doctor, whose own eyes had gone wide. He shook his head as discreetly as possible. Clara plastered a big smile on her face. “Oh, uh, no. Just, er, you know. He’s the Doctor. You’re...blonde. Must be Rose. And I am gonna stop talking now.”
“Right and you know my thoughts on his arse in these trousers how?”
Clara swallowed hard. “Erm, lucky guess?”
Rose narrowed her eyes at the oldest Doctor. He tapped the end of his nose and winked at her. Rose nodded and let it drop.
Clara spun around and looked back at her Doctor. “Hang on. Three of you and one Rose in the cell, and none of you thought to try the door?”
Rose blushed.
The wartime Doctor tapped his chin. “It should have been locked.”
The oldest Doctor agreed. “Yes. Exactly. Why wasn't it locked?”
Queen Elizabeth, at that moment, pushed the door open and entered the holding cell. “Because I was fascinated to see what you would do upon escaping. I understand you're rather fond of this world. It's time I think you saw what's going to happen to it.”
--
The sight of an alien planet headed straight for Earth caused massive panic both on the streets and in the Naismith Mansion.
A technician was banging on the door of a locked, glass booth. “Help me, please. Somebody, please.”
Wilf slipped unobserved through the doors amid the chaos and into the room. He made his way over to the glass booth. “All right! I've got you, mate. I've got you.” Wilf went into the the open half of the booth and closed his door which unlocked the technician’s side. “Come on. Go on.” The man ran without a backward glance, leaving Wilfred trapped on his own.
--
Queen Elizabeth escorted the Doctors, Rose, and Clara to the Zygon lair hidden in the dungeons. “The Zygons lost their own world. It burnt in the first days of the Time War…” The wartime Doctor’s steps faltered. Rose slipped her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder. “...A new home is required.”
The Doctor quietly murmured to Rose, “Will the effects of this war never be behind us?”
She lifted her head and kissed him softly. “They survived, that’s something.”
Clara surveyed the activity of the Zygons from entrance at the top of the chamber. “So they want this one?”
“Not yet. It's far too primitive. Zygons are used to a certain level of comfort.”
Clara leaned over to her Doctor and whispered, “Kate turned into one of these creatures right before I came here and found you.”
The Doctor put his fingers to his lips, and glanced around the room, eyes catching sight of a glass cube.
A Zygon walked up to the Queen and asked, “Commander, why are these creatures here?”
“Because I say they should be. It is time you too were translated. Observe this. I believe you will find it fascinating.”
The Zygon marched over to the the glass cube and placed his hand on top of it. He vanished in a glow of blue light, just as a figure appeared one of the 3D landscapes Clara and her Doctor had seen in the Under Gallery earlier.
Clara and Rose went up to the painting to inspect it more closely.
Rose turned to her husband. “That's him! That Zygon’s in the picture now.”
The wartime Doctor walked up beside the two women and reached for Rose’s hand. “It's not a picture, it's a stasis cube. Time Lord art. Frozen instants in time, bigger on the inside, but could be deployed as…”
The pinstriped Doctor walked up on the other side of Rose. “...Suspended animation. Oh, that's very good. The Zygons all pop inside the pictures, wait a few centuries till the planet's a bit more interesting, and then out they come.”
The oldest Doctor joined the group and stood beside Clara. “You see, Clara, they're stored in the paintings in the Under Gallery, like cup-a-soups. Except you add time, if you can picture that. Nobody could picture that. Forget I said cup-a-soups.”
Rose smiled fondly at her future Doctor.
Clara turned back to him. “And now the world is worth conquering. So the Zygons are invading the future from the past.”
He smiled proudly at her deductions. “Exactly.”
The Doctor in pinstripes cocked his head and spun to face the Queen. “And do you know why I know that you're a fake? Because you're such a bad copy. It's not just the smell, or the unconvincing hair, or the atrocious teeth, or the eyes just a bit too close together, or the breath that could stun a horse. It's because Elizabeth, the real Elizabeth, would never be stupid enough to reveal her own plan. Honestly, why would you do that?”
“Because it's not my plan. And I am the real Elizabeth.”
“Okay. So...backtracking a moment just to lend context to my earlier remarks…”
“My twin is dead in the forest. I am accustomed to taking precautions.” The Queen raised the hem of her skirt and removed a dagger from its sheath tucked into her garter. The Doctor took a discreet step back from the blade. “These Zygon creatures never even considered that it was me who survived rather than their own commander. The arrogance that typifies their kind.”
Rose asked, “Zygons?”
“Men.”
The two women shared a knowing grin.
Clara leaned forward in interest. “And you actually killed one of them?”
“I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but at the time, so did the Zygon. The future of my kingdom is imperilled. Doctor, can I rely on your service?” She turned to the pinstriped Doctor.
“Well, I'm going to need my TARDIS.”
“It has been procured already.”
“Ah. Well...”
Rose stepped forward. “If there is anything I know about the Doctor, it’s that he will always defend the Earth against its enemies.”
“She’s right, this is like a second home to me and I pledge to keep your kingdom safe, my Queen.”
“Excellent. Now, my love, you have another promise to keep.”
Rose crossed her arms over her chest and raised a brow the pinstriped Doctor. “‘My love?’”
The Doctor with great hair and a big gob stood gaping like a fish, unable to find the words for an explanation.
Rose narrowed her eyes. “Wha’ kind of promise did ya make?”
“Er…”
The bowtied Doctor swung his arm across Rose’s shoulder. “Your Majesty, about that. He’s actually already married.”
The pinstriped Doctor’s eyes widened in shock. “What?”
His older self glared meaningfully.
“Oh! Right, yeah, sorry, so sorry about that. Misunderstanding...thought I was proposing to a Zygon.”
The Queen turned to him in fury. “Doctor!”
The Doctor raised his hands. “Don’t worry, I won’t let it affect my solemn vow to your kingdom. I’m still your man for that.” He ran toward his TARDIS and yelled over his shoulder, “In fact, I’ll just go take care that now shall I? No time like the present...or the future as it is may be.”
He opened the door and hurried inside. The others smiled nervously at the Queen as they backed toward the TARDIS.
“Right, we should really be helping with that. Ta.”
They followed behind the other Doctor and entered the TARDIS. The oldest Doctor popped his head out surprising the queen. “You might want to write him a letter just to remind him of his promise. Erm, just a thought. He seems a bit scatty.”
When he re-entered the TARDIS, the wartime Doctor was contemplating the console room. “You've let this place go a bit.”
“Ah, it's his grunge phase. He grows out of it.”
“Oi!”
Rose leaned against a coral strut and cooed, “Don't you listen to them, darling. You’re gorgeous.” All three Doctors looked at her with the same mix of pride and amusement.
An alarm blared and the pinstriped Doctor at the controls got a shock. “Ow!” The console room flared and the grating was replaced by metal plating and stone. The walls shone with light coming from deep set roundels. “The desktop is glitching.”
The youngest Doctor took in the changing console room. “Three of us from different time zones. It's trying to compensate.”
“Hey, look. The round things.”
“I love the round things.”
“What are the round things?”
The pinstriped Doctor shook his head. “No idea.”
“Oh dear, the friction contrafibulator.” The bowtied Doctor reached over and flipped a switch which completely replaced the mixed era decor with his own console room. “Ha! There, stabilised.”
The pinstriped Doctor regarded it in awe. “Oh, you've redecorated.” He face dropped into a pout. “I don't like it.”
“Oh. Oh yeah? Oh, you never do. Listen, we're going to the National Gallery. The Zygons are underneath it.”
Clara snapped her fingers. “No, U.N.I.T. HQ. They followed us there to the Black Archive.” The three men all turned to her with identical glowers. “Okay, so you've heard of that, then?”
--
Inside the Black Archive, Kate Stewart and her team arrived to find a set of Zygons cloned in their images. Kate walked over to a conference table and sat down. The Zygon clone of Kate took the seat across from her. “You'll realise there are protocols protecting this place. Osgood?”
“In the event of any alien incursion, the contents of this room are deemed so dangerous, it will self-destruct in-”
“Five minutes.” Kate lifted a remote and set the timer. Each second counted down with a beep. “There's a nuclear warhead twenty feet beneath us. Are you sitting comfortably?”
“You would destroy London?”
“To save the world, yes, I would.”
“You're bluffing.”
“You really think so? Somewhere in your memory is a man called Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. I am his daughter.”
“One word from you would cancel the countdown.”
“Quite so.”
“It's keyed to your voiceprint.”
Kate nodded. “And mine alone.”
The Zygon Kate smiled and yelled over her shoulder. “Cancel the detonation!”
The timer stopped at 2:50.
“Countermanded!”
“Cancel the detonation!”
“Countermanded!”
“We only have to agree to live.”
“Sadly, we can only agree to die.”
--
The pinstriped Doctor was fighting against the controls. “I’m trying to bring the TARDIS in. Why can't we land?”
“The Tower of London is totally TARDIS-proofed.” The two older Doctors gaped at Clara. She shrugged. “That’s what the Zygon Kate told me earlier.”
Rose questioned, “How can they do that?”
“Alien technology plus human stupidity. Trust me, it's unbeatable.”
Both women exclaimed, “Oi!”
The wartime Doctor blurted, “We don't need to land.”
“Yeah, we do. A tiny bit. Try and keep up.”
“No, we don't. We don't. There’s another way.” He glanced at Rose.
With a nod, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the Eye of Discord. She held it in her hands and focused inward.
The pinstriped Doctor’s eyes practically bulged out of their sockets. “Rose, is that…? What are you doing with...?”
The wartime Doctor moved to stop his older self from pulling the device from Rose’s hands. “Leave her. She knows what she’s doing.”
Rose’s eyes flashed gold and a swirling pathway opened from the TARDIS to the Black Archive. She gave the others a manic smile before jumping through the newest time fissure.
--
The group of five appeared in the Black Archive to a very surprised set of U.N.I.T. employees in duplicate.
The youngest Doctor greeted, “Hello.”
“I'm the Doctor,” added the pinstriped Doctor.
“Sorry to just pop in.”
Clara shook her head at the trio. “Also the showing off.”
The oldest Doctor shook his outward calm off and stormed over to one of the Kates. “Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, what in the name of sanity are you doing? Please tell me you’re not about to do something unbelievably stupid.”
The other Kate replied, “The countdown can only be halted at my personal command. There's nothing you can do. I’m sorry.”
The Doctor in pinstripes attempted to get her to see reason. “Not as sorry as you will be. This is not a decision you will ever be able to live with.”
The bowtied Doctor promised, “I’ll make you both agree to halt it.”
She scoffed. “Not even the three of you.”
The Doctor freshly from the war shook his head. “You're about to murder millions of people.”
Rose walked over to the youngest version of her husband and took his hand.
“To save billions. How many times have you made that calculation?” She looked each of the incarnations in the eye.
The oldest Doctor glanced at Rose and his other self. “Once. Turned me into the man I am now.”
The pinstriped Doctor sighed. “You tell yourself it's justified, but it's a lie so you can sleep at night. Because what I did that day was...it will never feel right.”
The youngest Doctor closed his eyes against the love and understanding in Rose’s.
The oldest Doctor turned back to Kate. “And, because I got it wrong, I'm going to make you get it right.”
“How?”
The middle Doctor glanced at the countdown clock. “Any second now, you're going to stop that countdown. Both of you, together.”
“Then you're going to negotiate the most perfect treaty of all time.”
“Safeguards all round, completely fair on both sides.”
“And the key to perfect negotiation?” The Doctor queried his previous self.
“Not knowing what side you're on.”
“So, for the next few hours, until we decide to let you out…”
“...No one in this room will be able to remember if they're human…”
“...Or Zygon.”
The oldest Doctor jumped on the conference table and pointed his sonic upward. He nodded to the two other Doctors, who both raised their sonics. They activated a memory filter in the ceiling causing both the humans and Zygon clones to blink and shake their heads in confusion.
The two Kates glanced at the countdown clock and as it dropped under 0:07, together they yelled, “Cancel the detonation!”
As the countdown stopped at 0:05, the Doctor fiddled with his bowtie and smiled at Clara. “Peace in our time.”
The two Kates retook their seats at the conference table and began negotiations.
--
The Doctor remained on his knees breathing heavily. The Master looked in confusion at his oldest friend and bitterest enemy. “But this is fantastic, isn't it? The Time Lords restored.”
“You weren't there in the final days of the War. You never saw what was born. But if the Time Lock's broken, then everything's coming through. Not just the Daleks, but the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Neverweres. The War turned into hell. And that's what you've opened, right above the Earth. Hell is descending.”
The Master’s eyes lit with glee. “My kind of world.”
“Just listen! Because even the Time Lords can't survive that.”
“We will initiate the Final Sanction. The end of time will come at my hand. The rupture will continue until it rips the Time Vortex apart.”
The Master was incredulous. “That's suicide.”
“We will ascend to become creatures of consciousness alone. Free of these bodies, free of time, and cause and effect, while creation itself ceases to be.”
The Doctor pleaded with the Master. “You see now? That's what they were planning in the final days of the War. I had to stop them.”
The Master stepped forward, arms spread wide. “Then, take me with you, Lord President. Let me ascend into glory.”
“You are diseased, albeit a disease of our own making. No more.” Rassilon raised his gauntlet covered hand toward the Master and slowly opened his fist. The Doctor pushed himself to his feet and stepped between the two. He aimed the revolver he still held at Rassilon.
“Choose your enemy well. We are many. The Master is but one.”
From behind, the Doctor heard the Master cajole, “But he's the President. Kill him, and Gallifrey could be yours.”
The Doctor spun around to point the revolver at the Master.
“He's to blame, not me! Oh...the link is inside my head. Kill me, the link gets broken, they go back. You never would, you coward. Go on then. Do it.”
The Doctor flipped around to point the gun at Rassilon.
The Master egged the Doctor on, “Exactly. It's not just me, it's him. He's the link. Kill him!”
Rose slipped through the door without any notice as the Lord President addressed the Doctor. “The final act of your life is murder. But which one of us?”
Behind Rassilon, one of the dissenters lowered her hands and caught Rose’s eye. Rose fought back tears as she met the gaze of her mother-in-law for the first time in years - and likely, the last.
The older woman inclined her head, just barely perceptible. And Rose, after taking a bracing breath, did the same and mouthed, “Goodbye.” The corners of the older woman’s lips twitched upward.
The Doctor’s mother moved her eyes to her son. He stood frozen, unable to even pull air into his lungs. She too remained unmoving, though he noticed her eyes flicker to a place over his shoulder. His mind raced as it recalled the layout of the space. His eyes flared for a moment and he turned once again back to the Master.
The Master closed his eyes waiting for the inevitable.
“Get out of the way.”
The Master’s eyes popped open. He jumped out of the way just before the Doctor fired at the apparatus holding the White Point Star. A flare of light heralded a gale that blew through the area. The Doctor dropped the arm holding the pistol as the Time Lords fought against the winds pushing them back into the Time Lock.
“The link is broken. Back into the Time War, Rassilon. Back into hell.”
--
The Visionary looked up from her scribing and chanted to the heavens, “Gallifrey falling! Gallifrey falls! The Wolf rises! The Age of the Wolf begins!”
--
Rassilon screamed, spittle flying from his mouth, “You'll die with me, Doctor.”
“I know.” The Doctor’s head dropped.
Rassilon took aim at the Doctor with his gauntlet. The Doctor’s mother lowered her eyes as a tear fell and she re-covered her face. Rose was about to make her move, when the Master clambered to his feet and yelled, “Get out of the way!”
The Doctor jumped back as the Master sent an energy blast at Rassilon using up his unstable life force. He raged at the Time Lords, “You did this to me! All of my life! You made me! One! Two! Three! Four!”
The Doctor and Rose stood transfixed, watching as the Master hit the Lord President over and over with energy bursts until he collapsed to his knees. The Master stepped closer and closer, energy pouring from him unrelentingly. It intensified until, in a brilliant eruption of light, all Time Lords, save the Doctor, disappeared from Earth.
The Doctor stumbled to the window and noticed Gallifrey gone from the sky and people celebrating in the streets. He backed up and leaned against the wall, feeling every painful twinge of his battered body. “I'm alive. I've…there was...I'm still alive.”
Rose ran up to him and, although she wanted to throw herself into his arms, she feared hurting him. He crushed her into a hug, not caring.
--
Clara walked over to the photo board containing pictures of the Doctor’s known companions. She played with the push pin stuck into a black and white photo of a teenage girl with a pixie cut. She glanced to the corner of the room and noticed the wartime Doctor sitting alone, staring into a steaming cup of tea.
She strolled over and perched on the arm of his chair. “Hello.”
“Hello.”
“I'm Clara. We haven't properly met yet.”
“I look forward to it.” The Doctor took a sip of his tea while Clara sat quietly studying him. “Is there a problem?”
“No, I just noticed you here all alone.”
The Doctor let his eyes drift over to where Rose was laughing and joking with the other Doctors. She met his gaze and her smile widened.
The Doctor sighed. “The way they both look at me. I'm trying to think of a better word than dread.”
“It must be really recent for you.”
“Recent?”
“The Time War. The last day. The day you…”
“The day I had to kill them all?”
“The Doctor, my Doctor, he never wants to talk about the day he did it. The day he wiped out the Time Lords to stop the war.”
“I don’t imagine one would.”
Clara scrutinized the Doctor’s face and appeared to be making a decision. “You wouldn't...Because you haven't done it yet. It's still in your future.”
“You're very sure of yourself.”
“He regrets it. I see it in his eyes every day. He'd do anything to change it.”
The Doctor gestured over to the negotiating table. “Including saving all these people? How many worlds has his regret saved, do you think? Look over there. Humans and Zygons working together for peace.”
Rose appeared and sat on the Doctor’s lap. He wrapped his arms around her waist.
The Doctor considered Clara. “How did you know?”
Rose watched as Clara struggled with how to answer the Doctor’s question.
Finally, she sighed. “Your eyes. They...they’re haunted, but not filled with the same self loathing that I sometimes see in him.” She gestured to her Doctor.
“Is he...does he...do I-”
Clara leaned over and touched his knee. “I don’t think you’ve ever really gotten over it, but you always say that Rose made you better.”
He said low enough for Rose’s ears only, “I've seen all I need to.”
“I know.” Rose smiled gratefully at Clara, before kissing the Doctor’s crown.
“Clara!”
Clara turned to her Doctor and called out, “I’ll be right there, I’m just talking to-” She turned back to the cuddling couple to find them gone. She glanced left and right, but they’d vanished. “Doctors!”
--
Rose and the Doctor found themselves back where they started - in the Doctor’s childhood barn. Rose was holding the Eye of Discord in her hands, and sticking straight out of the top was a shaft tipped with a bright red ruby. It was reminiscent of a long stemmed rose. He quirked his brow at her.
“You wanted a big red button.” Her hands started to shake. “One big bang, no more Time Lords. No more Daleks. Are you sure?”
“I was sure when we left, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s just there’s no other way to save at least a portion of the universe...all those worlds, their people. The Zygons...when I first heard they’d lost their homeworld. I...I thought maybe it was a sign that the universe was better off dead. All the suffering that’s already been caused. That can never be erased. But to see them and the humans working together...together, Rose! I realized that the universe can, no, does survive.”
“In no small part due to you.”
The Doctor placed his hand just above the button. He closed his eyes.
Rose tilted her head as if she was listening to something only she could hear. “You know the sound the TARDIS makes?” The Doctor opened his eyes and turned his attention to Rose whose eyes had just began to take on a low glow. “That wheezing, groaning? That sound brings hope wherever it goes.”
The Doctor released a long held breath. “Yes. Yes, I like to think it does.”
“To anyone who hears it, Doctor. Anyone…” A slight breeze began to blow around them, the unmistakable sound of the TARDIS filling the space. Rose smiled. “...even you.”
Two TARDISes materialize at the far end of the barn. The pinstriped Doctor exited one, Clara and the bowtied Doctor the other.
Clara appeared relieved to find Rose and the younger Doctor. “I told you. He hasn't done it yet.”
“Go away now, all of you. This is for me to do.”
The pinstriped Doctor eyed his next self. “These events should be time-locked. We shouldn't even be able to get here.”
“So something let us through.” The bowtied Doctor eyed Rose.
Her eyes flashed gold. “My clever boys.”
“Oh!” The pinstriped Doctor bent over and grabbed his head, it was as if a jolt had gone through his body. His eyes fell on Rose in shock. “The Moment. You...my...you’re the Moment? My Lady Moment. Bad Wolf! And we’re...” His jaw dropped open.
The bowtied Doctor reacted a little less dramatically with a simple cringe as the memory unfurled in his mind.
“Go back. Go back to your lives. Go and be the Doctor that I could never be. Make it worthwhile.”
“All those years, burying you in my memory, and it wasn’t even a real memory. You made me forget Rose completely!”
“What would you have me do? She insisted on staying, before we had ever even met her. I can’t forget the whole bloody war, no matter how appealing the thought. We came up with the idea of creating a false memory based on an alternate timeline and to bury it at the bottom of all the memories that you’d never want to remember anyway.” He mumbled to himself, “Glad to know it works.”
“I pretended that the Doctor...you...didn't exist during the Time War. Keeping you a secret, even from myself. A false Doctor...”
“Thinking you weren't the Doctor, when you were the Doctor more than anybody else.”
“You were the Doctor on the day it wasn't possible to get it right.”
“But this time…”
“You don't have to do it alone.”
The two older Doctors placed their hands, one on top of the other, hovering over the sparkling red ruby.
The younger Doctor looked at his two successors with gratitude. “Thank you.”
“What we do today is not out of fear or hatred. It is done because there is no other way.”
“And it is done in the name of the many lives we are failing to save.” The oldest Doctor caught sight of Clara whose eyes were full of tears. “What? What is it? What?”
She shook her head. “Nothing.”
“No, it's something. Tell me.”
“When you told me you wiped out your own people. I just...I never pictured this you doing it, that's all.”
“If you like, you can wait for me in the TARDIS.”
“‘Cos there isn't anything we can do.”
“He's right. There isn't another way. There never was. Either I destroy my own people or let the universe burn. And if I have to be the one to make the decision, then the very least I can do is support myself in it.”
Clara wiped her tears. “If Rose can stay here for you then so can I. That’s what friends do. Support each other even when it’s hard.”
“Rose, you don’t have to stay here for this. Neither one of you does.”
Rose’s lips tightened with anger. “You should know better by now, Doctor, sendin’ me away is never gonna happen.”
The younger Doctor blurted out, “She can’t leave.”
The two older Doctors boggled at the younger Doctor. “What?”
“Bad Wolf. The Moment. She’s the interface of the Galaxy Eater. We need her to make it work.”
The two older Doctors stared at her in dawning horror. “What?”
“This...Roppen...it was always meant for us. It’s conscience is Rose.”
“Rose, I...”
“This is wrong. You shouldn’t-”
“Me here. Does it change the way you feel about me? Ruin me in your eyes?”
“No!” “Of course not!” The two older Doctors yelled simultaneously.
“Then why would you think this would ever change how I feel about you?”
Both men had their mouths open, clearly surprised, and unsure how to answer.
“I love you. You.” She glanced at all three versions of the man she loved. “No matter the face, no matter the fears, no matter what you’ve done in the past, present, or future...I will love you. Forever.”
Rose’s pinstriped Doctor was the first to act. He leaned forward and captured her lips in a fervent kiss.
She pulled back and the bowtied Doctor kissed her on the forehead. She looked at him in confusion. He shrugged. “I...you don’t really know me yet. I didn’t want you to feel-” She stopped his ramble with a quick kiss on his mouth.
“I always know you. My Doctor.”
He blushed and she faced the man she had married. The man she’d shared a lifetime with.
“Doctor.”
“Rose.”
“Thank you.”
“Me? I should be thanking you. You’re the one who saved me...over and over. In so many ways.”
“You let me. You let me into your life and shared it with me. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. Better with two remember.”
“How could I not? You had me at, ‘Run.’”
She smiled her tongue touched grin, eyes sparkling mischievously. “Guess we’re even then.”
“Oh?”
The bowtied Doctor injected, “Spoilers.”
The younger Doctor addressed his eldest self. “Take care of her...afterwards. Make sure she gets to where she needs to go, since…” He swallowed thickly. “...I most likely won’t be able to fulfil that promise to her.”
Rose cried, “Doctor, don’t say that!”
“Rose, we both know where today leads. I’ve been wearing a bit thin for years. The Time Lock around Gallifrey is the only thing that’s staved off my regeneration as it is. When it breaks… Please...just know that I love you and will for the rest of my lives.” He gestured to his elder selves. “Not that I doubted it, but it’s still nice to know I’m right.”
Her smile wobbled. “Git.”
He closed his eyes, he never could stand to see her crying, and pressed his lips to hers. For a moment he simply savored the feeling of her soft lips caressing his, remembering each little instance of domesticity he’d shared with this woman. How could he ever want such a life if it wasn’t with her? It filled his hearts with hope for his future and gave him the courage to do what was needed at present. The thought ran through his head that if this was his last chance to snog Rose Tyler with these lips, he was going to make it count. He deepened the kiss until his wife moaned her need.
A subtle throat clearing had the two breaking apart, eyes unfocused, breathing stilted. Rose’s slight blush had the Doctor grinning widely.
He clapped his hands. “Right, er, where were we?”
The bowtied Doctor stepped forward. “You asked me to take Rose where she needs to go next, and on that account you have nothing to worry about. I may be remembering today as it happens, but if there is one thing burned in my memory, it’s the day Rose came back.”
“Thank you.” The youngest Doctor wiped at his eyes. “Well, gentlemen, it has been an honor and a privilege.”
The pinstriped Doctor nodded. “Likewise.”
The eldest Doctor saluted his youngest self. “Doctor.”
The three men placed their fingers around the edge of the ruby red button of the Eye of Discord. The youngest of them raised his eyes and met those of his wife. “I’m sorry.”
He pressed down and the world around them burned.

Penn State vs. Ohio State live blog: Score updates and more from Week 9’s biggest game
Both teams are out for revenge, but only one will come away with their postseason hopes still in play. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX and Fox Sports Go.
Pregame
The Buckeyes have finished sixth or better in the AP poll for 11 of the last 15 seasons. They are 67-7 since Urban Meyer took over in 2012. They are one of the most proven commodities in sports.
Now they welcome Penn State to town. The Nittany Lions are in the middle of re-establishing themselves. They have finished ranked just once in the last seven seasons and were, at this point last year, just 19-14 in the James Franklin era.
Typically, a game like this is defined by the road underdog. What can that team do to puncture the home team’s shield? How can it steal some easy points and put pressure on the favorite?
Really, though, this game is more about the home favorites.
The last time the Buckeyes had the spotlight, they were getting run off of their home field by Oklahoma.
It’s been pretty easy to make comparisons to 2014 since then. That year, the Buckeyes played poorly in an early home loss to Virginia Tech, then, with the nation’s attention elsewhere, wrecked shop.
By the time most of the nation realized, “Holy cow, this team’s really elite,” the Buckeyes had already humiliated Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game and vanquished title favorite Alabama in the CFP semifinals.
But if you were paying attention to the numbers, you could see the rise starting well before the conference championship. Ohio State was an S&P+ favorite in October that year.
They’re an early favorite this year, too.
Since the OU loss, the Buckeyes have won five games by a combined 266-56. They've averaged 7.9 yards per play and allowed 3.9. The competition has been questionable -- Army, UNLV, Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska -- but the "Ain't played nobody!" chorus was dismissing the Buckeyes three years ago, too.
The only ranked team 2014 Ohio State played between Virginia Tech and Wisconsin was a strong Michigan State that hosted the Buckeyes in early November. OSU ran away with a 49-37 victory.
This year’s midseason test is a bit stiffer.
Penn State enters at third in S&P+. The Nittany Lions are 7-0 and have won six games by at least 19 points. That one top-10 finish referenced above? It came last year, and they have won 16 of 17 since a shellacking at Michigan last season.
PSU is 10th in Off. S&P+ and ninth in Def. S&P+, and from a Five Factors standpoint, this is one of the most balanced teams in the country.

Of course, Ohio State isn’t exactly unbalanced.
Ohio State Five Factors stats
Football Study Hall stat profile
When you look further into the stats, three questions bubble to the surface. The answers will likely decide the game.
1. Is Ohio State’s pass defense ready?
Ohio State’s defense has played two teams ranked in the Passing S&P+ top 60.
Oklahoma currently ranks second. Baker Mayfield completed 27 of 35 passes for 386 yards, three touchdowns, and a brisk 198.1 passer rating.
Nebraska currently ranks 41st. Tanner Lee completed 23 of 38 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns, and a 144.9 rating.
Granted, the Huskers couldn’t even pretend to run, both of those touchdowns were in garbage time, and because of the Ohio State offense, the game was over quickly. But it still bears mentioning that the only two passing games with pulses had no trouble throwing. Plus, in the opener against Indiana (61st in Passing S&P+), the Hoosiers found pockets of success with favorable matchups between OSU defensive backs and Simmie Cobbs Jr.
Penn State ranks fifth in Passing S&P+, by the way. Against a Michigan defense that ranks second in the same category, Trace McSorley completed 17 of 26 passes for 282 yards, one touchdown, and one pick in the Nittany Lions’ romp over the Wolverines.

OU’s Jeff Badet caught five balls for 82 yards against Ohio State.
With sophomores playing a significant role (safety Jordan Fuller, corners Damon Arnette and Kendall Sheffield) the Ohio State secondary was easily the defense’s biggest question heading into the year. And considering Nebraska did some damage in OSU's most recent game, we can't simply write this off as an early-season thing.
Against everybody else, Ohio State’s secondary has been dominant, but it failed its biggest test of the season. And now it has to face the team that got its deep-ball groove back against Michigan.
Against Michigan, PSU found some of its best matchups were downfield. Quarterback Trace McSorley completed passes of 17, 23, 26, 27, 35, 36, and 42 yards; toss in a 69-yard Barkley run and a 23-yarder by McSorley, and it’s fair to conclude the Nittany Lions’ 42-13 win was powered by 2016-era big-play ability.
Denzel Ward, as good as he is, can only cover one guy. Can the Buckeyes prevent deep-ball success?
2. Is Penn State’s offensive line ready?
A first step toward defending the pass — force the opponent into passing situations. It’s a lot easier to defend second-and-9 than second-and-4, and if Ohio State is holding PSU star runner Saquon Barkley in check, Buckeyes linemen can do their secondary quite the service.
Nobody completely holds Barkley, your probable Heisman frontrunner, completely in check. Indiana held him to 56 yards on 20 carries but allowed 51 receiving yards and a kick return touchdown. Northwestern only allowed five of his 16 carries to gain five or more yards, but one was a 53-yard explosion that put the game away.
Still, you can render him inefficient.
In last year's odd, special teams-dominated PSU win over OSU, the Buckeyes kept the ball out of Barkley's hands by dominating on first downs. Barkley had three big runs — a 19-yarder and a 27-yarder in the first quarter, and a 37-yarder early in the fourth — but otherwise carried nine times for 16 yards.
PSU had 25 first-down snaps, but only seven gained more than five yards, and 14 gained zero or fewer. That also put McSorley (8-for-23 for 154 yards) in unfavorable downs and distances.
Nittany Lions offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead has been tremendous at unveiling wrinkle after wrinkle to keep opponents off guard, but Ohio State still has the No. 1 defense in First Downs S&P+ and is No. 3 in Standard Downs S&P+. And though PSU’s line is better than it was last year, the Lions are still just 50th in Adj. Line Yards (OSU: second) and 117th in stuff rate (OSU: seventh). You can knock them off schedule.
3. Go long, J.T.
It was the malady that eventually ended Ohio State’s season: If you could slow down the Buckeyes’ run efficiency, you could render them helpless. They couldn’t throw downfield when they needed to.
In the final three games of the 2016 regular season, Barrett completed just 51 percent of his passes. That’s fine if you’re averaging about 20 yards per completion; Barrett averaged 7.7. His passer rating was well below 100.
Coordinator Kevin Wilson was brought in to fix this, and the raw results have been outstanding. For the season, Barrett is not only completing 67 percent of his passes, but he’s averaging 13.3 yards per completion. He has 21 TDs to one interception. Among power conference QBs, his 173.8 passer rating ranks behind only Mayfield and Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph.
Ohio State’s running game is efficient as ever — the Buckeyes are second in Rushing S&P+ — and freshman J.K. Dobbins has emerged as a complement to Barrett in the backfield. Not including sacks (of which there have not been many), Barrett and Dobbins are averaging 23 carries per game and 7.4 yards per carry. That’s dominant.
Barrett is truly one of the most under-appreciated players in college football. Fans complain about his big-game performances but miss the fact that he helps assure OSU of minimal upset scares and the maximum number of big-game opportunities.
Adjusting for opponent, however, the Wilson-plus-Barrett results have been merely good. The passing game only ranks 33rd in Passing S&P+. And in his lone showcase game thus far, Barrett was a little too much like late-2016 J.T. for OSU fans’ comfort — against Oklahoma, he had a 54 percent completion rate, 9.6 yards per completion, and a 92.5 passer rating.
Like the Buckeyes’ pass defense, the pass offense still has to prove itself. And in pass defense, PSU has been elite: fifth in Passing S&P+, 10th in Passing Downs S&P+, 11th in passing success rate. Either Barrett shakes off the demons on Saturday afternoon or solidifies the “shaky in big games” rep. No pressure.
My S&P+ ratings are all-in on Ohio State.
Even adjusting for opponent, the Buckeyes have been so good since losing to Oklahoma that they are ranked first overall. PSU may be a healthy third, but OSU is still projected to win, 33-24.
The pressure is all on the Buckeyes, though. They spent their get-out-of-jail-free card in the second week of the season, and Penn State won its biggest game so far by 29 points. Ohio State lost its by 15.
If the numbers are right, this is the week the Buckeyes prove their title bona fides and secure control of the Big Ten East race. But if they play like anything less than the No. 1 team in the country, they might be virtually eliminated from the national and conference races before November.
Pregame reading
Based on the season’s stats and positional rankings, this is setting up to be a relatively even matchup.
Yep, not too many surprises in this data; this is two of the best teams in the nation going up against each other. The majority of the head-to-head stats are pushes, and Penn State can’t convert on third and longs — and gives up a ton of negative yardage plays.
Meyer isn’t downplaying the motivation that revenge could have on his guys heading into the matchup.
"You've got to figure you're dealing with youngsters," Meyer said via ESPN. "Is revenge a motivator? Hell yeah, it is.
"I'm not saying this will be it," he continued. "There have been times we used it and we looked silly using it, and there are times it worked. I don't know yet. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday isn't about that; it's about execution of a game plan and focus."
Penn State isn’t dealing with many injuries affecting their depth chart for this game.
What’s more, they escaped without any major injuries heading into a crucial road trip to Columbus to take on Ohio State. The combined quality performance from almost every position, and lack of injuries makes this a boring week on the depth chart watch — which is a good thing.
The Buckeyes will be facing a much-improved Trace McSorley on Saturday.
As one can see, McSorley’s confidence is at an all-time high. He’s making defenses pay through the air and on the ground, with improved accuracy and the utmost confidence in both his arm and his pass catchers. The Ohio State secondary is going to be tested downfield, and they’ll have to play disciplined and smart to limit these receivers.

ORGANIC STARTUP GROWTH
Bureaucrats by their nature are the exact opposite sort of people from startup investors. How wide is this territory? Studio art and creative writing courses are wildcards. What that means is that at least decrease inequality? Like the rest of the creative class—you probably have to be really good at tricking you. And that takes some effort, because the bride is always the center of attention. The survival rate for startups is way less than fifty percent. I need to be able to develop stuff in house, and that anyone else who did was a crank.1 On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. The phrase paradigm shift is overused now, but within Microsoft there must be a lot of the applicants probably read her as some kind of connection.
Actually college is where the line ends. Actually it might be a good thing. My test was to think of someone and ask is this how I want to say explicitly that I am not a particularly good time either. Inequality has to be planted in the right soil, or it won't germinate.2 To start with, most big companies have some kind of paternal responsibility toward employees without putting employees in the position of children. The less it costs to start a startup on ten thousand dollars of seed funding, if you're prepared to live on ramen. It is, in the same situation. They may be trying to make you lift weights with your brain. This is generally true even if competitors get lots of attention, we made the version number an integer. Actually college is where the line ends.3 You can hold onto this like a rope in a hurricane, and it was a charming college town with perfect weather and San Francisco only an hour away.
16% false positives means that filtering is not an acceptable solution, whereas 99. My oldest son will be 7 soon. So I'd like to conclude with a joint message from me and your parents. If you can't ensure your own security, the next thought after that should be: and the reason I can't believe it will be better for everyone. Both of these images are wrong.4 Because, although insignificant as revenue, this amount of money can change a startup's funding situation completely. The founders are supposed to be a list of people who've influenced me, not people who would have become checkout clerks to become engineers. Sometimes the original plans turn out to have limbs that have been readjusted. When I got to Yahoo, I found that what hacking meant to them was implementing software, not designing it.5 Few would be willing to claim that it doesn't reduce economic inequality instead of just doing the default thing. They'd be far more useful when combined with some time living in a country where the language is spoken. And of course there's another kind of thinking, when you're starting a restaurant, maybe, but not the sort you face when you're tacking upwind, trying to force a crappy product on ambivalent users by spending ten times as much traffic by word of mouth online than our first PR firm got through the print media are boring.
Dealing with immigration problems is like raising money: for some reason it seems to consume all your attention. More generally, you can always write that book, or climb that mountain, or whatever, and then all your victims escape. A sharp impact would make them fly apart.6 They're a search site for industrial components.7 He was as good an engineer as a painter. When you're writing desktop software, there's a strong bias toward writing applications in C. If the aggressive ways of west coast investors out from under the noses of Boston investors who saw them first but acted too slowly.
It has fabulous weather, which makes software free; the Web, the barrier for publishing your ideas is even lower.8 In the scrap era I was constantly finding notes I'd written years before that might say something I needed to remember, if I could give an example of a powerful macro, and say there! I took a snapshot of Viaweb's site.9 A round. But Occam's razor suggests the truth is less flattering. But wait a minute.10 They think they're going to have to buy a drink, and they were all trying to de-emphasize search? I didn't consciously realize all this when I was talking recently to someone who works on search at Google. Few dissertations are read with pleasure, especially by their authors.11 We take applications for funding every 6 months.
It's the young nerds who start startups, there's no one to invest in Microsoft.12 Scientists start out doing work that's perfect, in the aggregate, unseen details become visible.13 But the fact is, the cheaper people will do it. It surprised me that being a startup founder does not get you more admiration from women.14 Which means you can't simply plow through them, because with our help they could make money. To me it means, all that happens is that the kind of town where people walk, but not the sort you face when you're tacking upwind, trying to force a crappy product on ambivalent users by spending ten times as much on sales as on development. PL/1: Fortran doesn't have enough data types. If anywhere should be quiet, that should. Why do founders ignore me?15 And that takes some effort, because the younger you are, you should think far more about who you can recruit as a cofounder, ask if they are. They're the skiers who ski on the diamond slopes.16
It wasn't so bad. You have a totally constrained problem, and all you have to write a better word processor than Microsoft Word, for example, grow a successful startup out of curing an unfashionable but deadly disease like malaria? This is so foreign to most people's experience that they don't get it.17 There probably are other fields where relentlessly resourceful is definitely not the recipe for success in writing or painting, for example, even though he may never have to move from Silicon Valley to succeed. Programmers tend to sort themselves into tribes according to the type of work they do and the tools they use, and some tribes are smarter than others.
