Sydney Fish Market - Designed by @3xnarchitects "The new Sydney Fish Market will be the biggest in the world. While its key operation is industrial by nature, the ambition is to maintain focus on human scale and fine grain urban form within the city fabric. Sydney Fish Market is a project that is one of many examples of how 3XN and GXN's collaborational work feed each other: With 3XN's world-class design and GXN's strategic guidance for a human-centered design of a large scale building, the New Sydney Fish Market will be a critical component of the community: a catalyst for a strengthened relationship, both physically and through the identity, it offers to locals and visitors. The geometry of the Sydney Fish Market roof is developed through flow analysis and particle simulations to meet the contextual challenges a humid subtropical climate offers. The roof is one of the building's most important sustainability features providing daylighting, shading, and natural ventilation. The geometry also allows it to produce its own energy by incorporating photovoltaic cells, rainwater collection, and recycling. 3XN and GXN have worked closely to create a roofscape that refers to the surrounding water aesthetically 𝘢𝘯𝘥 pragmatically, tying all of the various program elements together in one elegant move. The brief provided by project client AMP Capital asked for the existing fabric of the building to be retained and updated to reflect the built environment of contemporary Sydney. The design by 3XN and BVN sees 90 percent of the original building retained, while the new addition is adaptable and sustainable.
The upcycling approach represents an embodied carbon saving of 7.3 million kilograms compared to a conventional construction project of this scale, which amounts to the same amount of carbon emissions created from 35,000 flights between Sydney and Melbourne.
Following its completion, reached earlier this year, Quay Quarter Tower achieved 6-star Green Star and 5.5 Star NABERS energy ratings, as well as being WELL Gold certified. BVN is currently undertaking a carbon neutral fitout for one of the tower’s first tenants, spanning three floors.

The site was previously occupied by a classic office tower that no longer met today’s requirements. Instead of demolishing the building, as was usually the case in the past, it was decided to integrate large parts of the existing supporting structure into a new high-rise building. In this way, two thirds of the beams, columns and floor slabs as well as almost the entire core built in the 1970s could be retained. These main aspects of the radical sustainability concept helped save almost 7500 tons of carbon dioxide compared to a complete demolition and conventional new construction.

In 2014, the Australian firm AMP Capital launched a bold and bizarre call to action to the architectural community of Sydney—replace their skyscraper headquarters without demolishing it.
They wanted their AMP Center, the once-tallest building in Sydney, to become the world’s first “upcycled skyscraper,” and the results were truly inspirational.
By grating a second tower onto the existing core of the AMP Center and not demolishing it, 12,000 tons of CO2 were saved which would have otherwise been created through the use of heavy machinery and the loss of carbon captured in the cement. 12,000 tons is equal to 3 years of the 49-story tower’s maximum energy consumption.
Built in the 1970s, the AMP Center wasn’t necessarily on its last legs, but wasn’t viable for the company any longer. But the firm was unwilling to commit to the massive costs of carbon and money when another option was available.
First though, sufficiently bold architects were needed for the project. Three firms teamed up, led by Danish architects 3XN, an Engineering company called Arup, and the Australian architects BVN.
“The tower was coming to the end of the end of its life, in terms of viability… but the structure and the ‘bones’ can actually last a lot longer,” said Fred Holt from 3XN in a video interview. “You can’t always retain everything. But if you can retain the structure—and that’s where the majority of your embodied carbon is—then you’re lowering your footprint.”
At first it was unclear how much of the original structure would be saved. Beginning on the project, the team realized the original tower was actually about 4 meters shorter than the original drawings suggested.
They installed hundreds of sensors to track the tiniest of movements to ensure that by aligning their new construction with the old one, there wouldn’t be any surprises waiting for them at key moments.
In short, the build was a huge success, and the architects boast that walking from the new construction into the old tower is an unnoticeable transition.
Five stacked units with sharp points twist up toward the sky, while an envelope covers both the new extension and the old tower such that no one could tell the difference. Office space was expanded from 4,500 to 9,000 personnel, and the lack of demolition saved AMP around AUD$150 million.
The Quay Quarter Tower, as it’s called, won World Building of the Year upon its opening late in 2022. 3XN hopes it serves as a case study for the future potential in upcycling towers.

HRH The Crown Prince awarded the 4th "HRH Crown Prince Frederik International Business Awards" at Frederik VIII’s Palace today to three companies that have shown special results on the international scene. Sustainable fish production in Egypt, green architecture Down Under and breakthroughs in the American health sector characterize this year's three award recipients: Aller Aqua Egypt, 3XN Australia and MagVenture Inc. The three companies are all subsidiaries of Danish companies. The award, which is given out once a year in the categories Business Excellence, Green Solutions and Newcomer of The Year, is an extension of the Royal House's many-year efforts to promote Danish business interests - an effort that the Crown Prince's father, Prince Henrik, clarified more than 35 years ago with the Exportforeningens Diploma and H.K.H Prince Henry's Medal of Honor.

The car manufacturer is rebuilding its plant in Munich. The area, which had been sealed off until now, is to be given transparent façades that allow a glimpse into the production facilities.

Kostenlos einen Glasfaseranschluss?
Ein undurchsichtiges Angebot
Kaum zu glauben - und auch die Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) glaubt dies nicht und der Bundesverband der Verbraucherzentralen (vzbv) hat die Firma Giga Fiber wegen undurchsichtiger AGBs abgemahnt. Giga Fiber wirbt mit dem Angebot für einen Glasfaseranschluss mit 250 MBit/s im Downstream für null Euro. Allerdings muss ein Interessent bei Abschluss des Null Euro Vertrags zustimmen, dass "wiederkehrende Zahlungen wie Miete, Nebenkosten, Strom" – aber auch Darlehenszahlungen – "über den von Giga Fiber zur Verfügung gestellten Payment-Service" abgewickelt werden, schreibt Heise.de.
Ein Payment-Service ist leider ganz was anderes als eine Lastschriftermächtigung, die allerdings bei Null Euro auch überflüssig sein sollte. In unseren Artikeln zur Einführung von PSD2 in der EU hatten wir bereits vor Unternehmen gewarnt, die damit Banken gleich gestellt werden und Einblick in unsere Bankkonten bekommen können.
Der Bundesverband der Verbraucherzentralen (vzbv) hat die Firma wegen Irreführung abgemahnt und mehrere Punkte genannt:
Giga Fiber gibt weder auf der eigenen Webseite noch in der App den konkreten Zahlungsdienstleister und dessen Anschrift an.
Banken werden von der Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstaufsicht (BaFin) überwacht, für Giga Fiber gelte dies nicht.
Die Vertragsbedingung, nach der Nutzer zur Erstattung von Kosten für den Hausanschluss verpflichtet werden, wenn sie während der Mindestvertragslaufzeit gegen nicht genau erläuterte Pflichten verstoßen, wurde abgemahnt.
Heise.de befürchtet, dass Giga Fiber generell eher ein Vermittler und kein tatsächlicher Telekommunikationsanbieter oder Finanzdienstleister zu sein scheint. Dann würde der Zugang zum Netz über Provider wie Telekom, Vodafone oder 1&1 bereitgestellt werden, "die man dann nehmen müsste", ohne diese Wahl ablehnen zu können.
