Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles: 3x18 Bleeding Through

Summary: A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time. There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season. Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Emma sat at the counter at Granny’s focusing all her attention on the mug of hot cocoa sitting before her. If all went as planned, she’d be able to focus her magic and send the mug to the broody pirate sitting in their characteristic booth.

Despite, well, everything (after all, nothing in this town was ever easy or normal), Emma had a new found optimism after the day she’d just spent. They may not know what Zelena’s plan was. They may not know exactly how to defeat her. They may not even know why she was doing what she was doing, but they did have something going for them: Emma had learned how to control her magic, and with that simple fact she knew they were going to win. That fact alone made her nearly euphoric.

She closed her eyes, focusing on the feeling, and let the warmth of her magic bubble up from deep within. When she opened her eyes, she saw that it had worked. She’d successfully transported the hot beverage without spilling a drop.

“Boom!” she said, triumphantly, as she rose from her bar stool and bounded over to Killian in the booth. “Granny’s to go. I should open a franchise.”

Killian sighed, lifted the mug from the book he was perusing and set it aside. “It’s impressive,” he said, in a tone that sounded far more annoyed than impressed.

Something was up with him. He hadn’t truly been himself since…well, since he brought her back to Storybrooke, to be honest, but especially in the past day. He’d been broody before, but this…this was a whole new level.

She thought back to earlier that evening when she’d seen what he’d done–helped Ariel find her way back to Eric–when she’d finally opened up to him, told him she didn’t care what happened in the past year.

When she’d all but let him inside her walls. (She hadn’t torn them down, of course. It was more like she’d cut a small door for him.)

She wasn’t an idiot. She knew he cared for her. He’d all but declared his love back in Neverland. She wasn’t ready for all of that yet–wasn’t sure if she’d ever be–but she was ready for…she didn’t know…something.

She would have thought he’d have jumped at the opening she offered him. She would have thought her overture would have put a smile on his face, but nothing could have been farther from the truth. If anything, her statements seemed to cast him even deeper into his bad mood. He’d even declined having dinner with the family.

Something was definitely up with him.

Ever since Neverland, he’d been there for her, he’d been her support, her sounding board, her cheerleader. In some ways, he’d been the best friend she had. It was time she returned the favor. So she found herself doing something she’d never expected to do with him.

Flirting.

“You wanna see something really impressive?” she asked, giggling like a schoolgirl. With a wave of her hand, she transported his hook to the coat rack in the corner of the room.

She would have expected him to laugh, to praise her magical prowess, to do that thing with his eyebrows that she’d never admit made the butterflies dance inside her, to make a suggestive remark. Anything.

Instead, he sighed in obvious exasperation as he got up from his seat to retrieve his steely appendage. “It’s bad form, Swan,” he said, an edge of impatience in his tone, “tampering with a man’s hook.”

Yeah, there was no doubt about it, something was seriously off. “Okay, what is up with you?” she asked.

He took his seat again, sighing and refusing to look at her as he clicked his hook back into place. “I apologize for my rudeness. It’s a long story. Too long for now.” With that, he uncorked his flask and took a long drag.

Well, at least he’d admitted there was a story there. She wasn’t about to let him dismiss it like that, though. It was time they had it out. It was time he let her know what was eating him inside.

It was time she proved to him that she’d been serious in the stairwell of her parents’ loft earlier that day. She didn’t care what he’d done; it wouldn’t change how she felt about him. (Not that she wanted to delve too deeply into just what she felt about him, but that was beside the point.)

“Okay, obviously something is–” she began, just as Belle burst through the door, book in hand and a look of urgency on her face.

Emma sighed. She should have known better than to hope for a heart to heart. A person could barely get two sentences out in this town before some crises erupted.

She really couldn’t wait to have this whole business behind her so she and Henry could get back to New York, back to normal life. Whether Killian ever told her what was bothering him, whether he followed her back to New York again…well, she supposed that would just have to remain an open question.

Ok, let’s watch The Evil Queen! Tbh, kind of excited for this and I hope you guys enjoy. Being unhinged about studying media *is* one of my favorite things to do

So first things first, this episode was written by Jane Espenson and Christine Boylan, and directed by Gwneth Horder-Payton. It’s cool to see such a heavily woman-made episode, you know?

Plus we can pretty much expect any episode from Espenson to be fairly good. She wrote Red-Handed (1x15), Bleeding Through (3x18) and Mother (4x21)

She also wrote Skin Deep (1x12), which Robert Carlyle once said is “the best 42 minutes of TV [he’s] ever been involved in” (x) which is arguably, 100% true. Honeslty I think Skin Deep could be argued as the best ouat episode in general (or even Desperate Souls—Carlyle is fucking amazing) but—

Point is, we can pretty much count most episodes from Espenson as being fairly good

2x20 has a 7.9/10 rating on IMDB, which is fairly normal for an episode of ouat

Also, about 7.16 million people tuned in to watch, which is, again, pretty normal. This is right about the time ouat started to kind of…fall off in viewership

Season 3 Character Highlights - 3 Things

Since we have a long hiatus and my husband is tired of hearing me talk about Lone Star, I have decided to do a ‘favorite things’ for each of the main characters, all are my own opinions. A new one will be added every other day until all 10 main characters are complete.

Character: Owen Strand

Favorite 3 scenes:

1. 3x04 Push: During montage of Grace giving birth/TK waking up – he had no dialogue, but his body language was more than enough to convey Owen’s feelings at the time. He was assuming his son was dying while he was watching a couple he cares deeply for meet the addition to their family. This is honestly probably one of my favorite Rob Lowe scenes ever.

2. 3x18 A Bright and Cloudless Morning: the Manny scene feels like Owen finally acknowledging how deeply he has held so much throughout his life was magic. Manny telling him that no one is asking him to forget, while also making him see how he has been carrying it with him for over 20 years, letting it deeply impact all of his relationships.

3. 3x09 The Bird: When he finally told Ginsburg everything he had wanted to say to Gwyn. It was almost like we saw the 1st of his many weights of regret fall him in that scene.

Favorite 3 lines: Funny, heartfelt, or ridiculous

1. 3x16 Shift-less: “All this time, I thought you didn't want to be a father; it turns out you just didn't want to be a father to me. And I'm not sure I blame you after everything. I'm the one who broke the family. Dad, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I couldn't save him. I tried, I swear to God, I tried. I'm so, so sorry.” –This scene/quote explains a lot about why Owen is the way he is.

2. 3x14 Impulse Control: “As the kids say, today, I'm all Gucci.” –He really, really wasn’t.

3. 3x07 Red vs Blue: “I have an idea, why don’t we burn down our fire house again and tell them that we lost our jerseys.” –Because this would totally fix the situation.

Favorite 3 dynamics:

1. Owen & Judd: This relationship has probably always been Owen’s strongest and most consistent relationship through out the series, and this really continues in Season 3. The respect that the characters have for each other bleeds into each scene they have, like the way Judd jumps in with directing the crew at the clown call, but does it like it was coming from Owen. I also love how Judd will flat out refuse to answer some of Owen’s more ridiculous questions, and the way he has no ability to school his reactions to the random things Owen does, even years later just makes me love all of their scenes even more. The last they shared in 3x18, with Owen acknowledging to Judd that the 126 was his house was such an amazing call back to the pilot, in an episode filled with pilot parallels.

2. Owen & Catherine: I may be in the minority, but I actually liked this relationship for him. She wasn’t afraid to call him out on his shit or to disagree with him. I love that she saw something in him, and tried to break through his walls, but also respected herself enough to tell him not to call her until he got the help that he desperately needed. Seeing that she sent him a card after the building collapse was a great way to keep her relevant and shows that even though they weren’t together, she was still supportive of him. However, now every time I see Matthew McConaughey I can’t help but to think of their first date.

3. Owen & Tommy: These two are a bit of a chaotic duo, but they really do complement each other in the fire house. I love their relationship as Co-Captains, they work together almost seamlessly since 2x1, but in season 3 it became stronger. I was one of the few that liked that he was the one that she broke down with in 2x13, I also loved the way they communicated in 3x04 when the tables were slightly turned. Like Owen’s relationship with Judd, his relationship with Tommy has been built on a mutual respect for each other. I loved watching them have fun in 3x07. In some ways, I think that a reason that Owen has been able to be more hands off with TK, especially with everything that happened in season 3 was because he knew he could trust Tommy to let him know if there was anything that he NEEDED to know. He had already told her in 3x04 that there wasn’t anyone else he would have wanted his son to work under, and I think that throughout the season, that feeling increased for him.

3 things we learned:

1. Family History: Specifically, that he had a younger brother named Tyler that died young, and seemed like the catalyst for Owen needing to save lives, not just wanting to. His mother and father were also introduced in flashbacks, letting us know that he hadn’t seen his father, Walter, since he was a kid. Also, that his father started another family, leaving him with at least one ½ sibling, Robert.

2. 9/11: We learned that he had been one of the people that had been pulled from the rubble of the towers, we hadn’t known previously where he had been, just that he had lost his whole house/shift.

3. Past relationship: we finally got more info on wife #2. Lorraine, the knife wielder.

3 hopes for season 4:

1. I think meeting Lorraine would be hilarious, especially if they were to get someone that could really tap into the crazy that I imagine this woman is filled with. I want her to be someone so totally opposite of the professional women we have seen him with like Zoe, Gwyn, and Catherine. Like Anna Faris’ character from Just Friends would be hilarious.

2. Continues to actually pay attention to his issues, season 3 did a great job of breaking him down, so it would be nice to see him really start to heal.

3. Repairing the relationship with TK. Season 2 did a lot of damage to their relationship and it felt like that divide only became stronger throughout season 3. There was just a disconnected distance between them, that wasn’t there with any other characters. Their last scene in 3x18 did actually feel like the first step in that direction.

3. Favorite story arc

I'd say season 7 (or 3B but I have to pick one). It gave us so many cool new characters to love and it was definitely the soft reboot that the show needed to come back from the disaster that season 6 was. They needed a bunch of fresh conflicts to work with and the season 7 storyline introduced just that while at the same time keeping some of the old conflicts that still had potential to develop. I loved how it feels like a redo of season 1 but without having some of the things that annoyed me and with having higher stakes. Henry and Jacinda were great as the main couple and I loved the addition of twists when it comes to who cast the curse and how that happened. It was a lot more complicated to break as well while at the same time allowing some of the characters to be themselves at an earlier point in the season. I think it had a great balance of things and that's why it managed to become my favorite arc of the show.

10. Favorite backstory

Cora's. I know that we didn't really get a lot of her backstory but I just love what they did with it. I'm mostly talking about what we see in 2x16 The Miller's Daughter here. It's just the perfect way to make her sympathetic without veering into trying to excuse her actions. They made it clear that she could have chosen to turn back at any point and her own villainy is all her choice. But at the same time you can understand perfectly well where her ambition comes from. You can see that she has skills and smarts that are overlooked simply because of her social status and that is easy to relate to for the average viewer. And her backstory in 3x18 Bleeding Through adds a little flavor to that, a little humanity to Cora as we see her be naive just like any other girl her age and then taking a hit because of it that made her into what we know her to be. I think that Cora is one of the most fascinating villains on any show and a big part of the reason why is the amazing work on her backstory that gives you just enough to inform her actions and contextualize them without making excuses for her.

18. Character who deserved better

There are many names that can go here but the one that really belongs in this spot is Mulan. She was given nothing. They completely forgot about her. She never got the happy ending that she definitely deserved and they didn't even include a throwaway mention of her in the finale like they did about Lily's father. Girl was done so dirty.

21. If you could remove or alter any one episode's backstory, which would it be, and why?

The one in Ill-Boding Patterns. It was so OOC and completely assassinated Baelfire's character just to make a parallel for the sake of Rumple and Gideon's relationship. I don't even care about Baelfire as a character and that flashback enraged me to hell and back. I would remove it completely and do something else there. Honestly, my memory of season 6 is mostly nonexistent because I did not like 93% of it so I can't talk about what I would've wanted to do there but pretty much anything else would've been better.

writer’s month prompts

prompt three: magic (canon compliant 3x18, ‘bleeding through’)

If he hadn’t been acting--the way he was acting--she might not have done it. But he was, and she did, and there was no taking it back, not the smirk or the jaunty flick of her wrist or her giggle or the way that what she really wanted, more than anything, was to provoke him. Because what he was missing was that spark.

So Emma Swan flicked her wrist and grinned her stupid grin and hung his hook from the light fixture in the deserted dining room at Granny’s and waited for a laugh that just didn’t come, for a spark that seemed somehow snuffed out, like he’d crushed it beneath his boots or maybe--she had?

She didn’t know and that made her want to act out, make him laugh or yell or challenge her for fuck’s sake, up in her space and her grill with his I’ve yet to see you fail or Not a day will go by I won’t think of you or that stupid smile on his stupid face when she’d opened her door in New York and he’d seen her.

Instead, he sighed. It was a sound that contained no spark, no amusement, no anger, no raised eyebrow, no emotion. There was nothing but exhaustion and she had never seen him like this but it was too late for that, she could only grin stupidly at him and wait for him to recover the way he always did, the way he would cover it with a joke and a leer and then say something so breathtakingly supportive, so heartrendingly genuine, that it would make it all feel ok, somehow.

Because it wasn’t ok. There was nothing ok about this moment, this time, this place. Her son didn’t have any of his memories of his real life. Her parents were having another kid. Neal was dead. Her life had been flip-turned upside down because Captain-freaking-Hook had shown up at her door and told her she had to save everyone again and worst of all, she’d followed him. She’d believed him when he sipped his rum and looked at her with his ridiculous eyes through his ridiculously long lashes and said, in that painfully honest way that he had, “I came back to save you.”

Now he rolled his eyes and he looked at her and he said, “Bad form, Swan.”

They were under attack by the actual goddamn Wicked Witch of the West. She’d just left a fucking seance and she could feel him behind her as she’d gone down the stairs--the ghost of his hand along her back but when she’d turned it was gone and he’d looked wrong.

He looked wrong now, too, the way the fingers on his right hand twitched and his left wrist was just--empty. He looked off-balance and like the thought of taking his eyes off of that stupid book for even a second was too much for her to ask.

It was only when he’d stood up and walked to the coatrack that it even occurred to her how much she had--well, she’d overstepped, hadn’t she? People called him ‘Hook’, his more colorful moniker or whatever it was, but it was still--it was his. Emma didn’t even know how long it had been since he’d had two hands but just because she took it for granted didn’t mean that he did and--yeah.

She’d just wanted to have a laugh, just one minute to fool around with someone who--

Who got her. Who did stupid things like cross realms and show up at her door and babysit her kid and who’d looked into her eyes and read her like a goddamned book with his “I love a challenge” and “I know how you feel” and that was the problem, wasn’t it? He did.

So she chuckled to cover it up as she could hear the metal click back into place and his muttered “I apologize for my rudeness”; her “What’s going on with you?” and the way he didn’t answer as the moment, it sort of hovered, hanging in the air for much, much more than a moment, as she looked at him and nodded and he tried to smile, a half-hearted thing--

“Emma! Emma! I found it!”

And then the moment was gone.
