Critical theory: Faith (both directions). The three archetypes. 

Key quotes: Casey, "Do you believe in God, Dean? I’d be surprised if you did." Dean, “I don’t know. I’d like to.” 

Discussion: Liked Dean’s conversation with the demon. However, Dean is usually the one on the side of “we kill supernatural things” vs. Sam’s “we kill evil things”. But Sam was the one who killed Casey, and Dean tried to save her. Casey tried to save him. Dean is good at reading people, seeing their nature (like with Ben)

Liked the demon religion, that Lucifer is like their Jesus. Gives the demons more depth. And Casey was making points—they don’t want to bow down to humans. But there are probably a lot of demons who disagree with Lucifer, and there’s probably gonna be a lot of infighting with the demons, which is what is going on with Ruby and Sam. But a lot of them, like Casey, were ready to follow him, just the grooming didn’t finish and he doesn’t want to lead them. 

Which archetype is Casey? Certainly a more blended one. Not madonna. But… not whore or bitch either, really. Dean does call her a bitch, which obviously is interesting (she calls him one too). But she’s complicated. She maybe isn’t even an archetype? There is definitely a way that the women in spn talk, they all talk the same, and Casey certainly does. All the female demons are Sexy™ which is kinda exhausting. 

Notes: Every time I give “faith” as critical theory they both go 🫢 because apparently “‘Faith’ means it’s gonna be a banger.”
