"Nimona" the movie art style inspiration
This tweet basically summarizes a big thing I've been thinking about when looking at reactions to the Nimona teaser and footage releases.
Tumblr media
But actually we have to go back to 2012 first, when Paperman the short film released under Disney (it was attached to Wreck-It Ralph).
For background, Nimona is a webcomic turned graphic novel by Nate Diana Stevenson. The adaptations rights were purchased by Fox in 2015, who assigned it to Blue Sky Studios to make. Disney purchased 20th Century [Fox] Animation in 2019, and shuttered Blue Sky before the film was complete, cancelling the project in February 2021. The film was picked up by Annapurna (production), DNEG (animation, with use of Blue Sky materials), and Netflix (distribution/marketing). It will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 14th, 2023, show in limited theaters on June 23, 2023, and be on Netflix for general streaming on June 30th, 2023 at 3 AM EDT. Anyway, Paperman.
Tumblr media
Cannot stress enough that this short was really groundbreaking. While Nimona the movie adaptation didn't start life at Disney, 2012 was long before Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse came out in 2018 (or when it started production by 2015 or so). In point of fact, we knew back when Nimona was cancelled in 2021 (or earlier) that it was planned even then to use an evolved version of Paperman's art style. Notably, the short's animation supervisor was Patrick Osbourne. (Paperman's director, John Kahrs, also worked at Blue Sky prior to this, and the composer, Christophe Beck, is also composing the score for Nimona, but let's focus on Osbourne).
(Also kind of... random theory, a lot of people are criticizing the office building sequence in the Nimona teaser footage cause they think it looks "unfinished", I think because they're confusing intentionally minimalist "modern" design with being "unfinished". But a part of me kind of wonders if the design itself is some sort of homage to Paperman, which largely took place in an office building, though also it's just an office building, it's not surprising the design is minimalist).
Anyway, Feast the short film was released in 2014, and it was directed by Osbourne.
Tumblr media
Osbourne was later one of the original directors for the Nimona film before it was cancelled by Disney in 2021 (the article is from June 2015, and leads with the fact Osbourne directed Feast, and notes that he also worked on Paperman). Watch both the Paperman and Feast shorts, you'll see the same style there. Again, 2014 is a lot earlier than 2018.
And then of course Blue Sky (original animation studio for Nimona prior to the Disney cancellation) released The Peanuts Movie in 2015. DNEG has used a lot of Blue Sky Studios materials in their production to complete Nimona. A number of Blue Sky folks were brought back on to work on the project, as well. And based on leaked stuff from around the Disney cancellation, we know the stuff carried over (in the articles it's framed kind of like it leaked when the film was officially revived in April 2022, but the footage on the article came out around/before Nimona's cancellation in 2021).
Folks also need to remember that just because film A released after film B doesn't mean that film A was inspired by B, particularly with the long production schedules of animation (and in the case of something with as rocky a production history as Nimona).
From what I can tell, both Nimona and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse began production around the same time (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was in talks around 2014/2015, and seemingly was in at least pre-production by early 2015; Fox bought the adaptation rights for Nimona sometime in/around early June 2015). While Nimona was still in production when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out in 2018, it had been in production for around three years at that point. Certainly it was developing for a long time, even before it was cancelled in 2021 (6 years versus Spiderverse's 3), and projects stuck in development hell do make 180s sometimes. I just kind of doubt they just saw Spiderverse, or even the marketing materials for it, and completely redesigned things based solely on that, given what we know of the development plans and who they picked for the project. Comparatively, The Peanuts Movie also had a very long production time, seemingly, with the idea originating in 2006.
Whatever the case may be, and no shade on the amazing beauty of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (gorgeous, amazing film, please watch it if you haven't), I highly doubt we have Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to thank for Nimona the movie's existence/appearance, or later films or shows using similar styles. At best, I think there's a non-zero possibility that the 2018 success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse helped encourage Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix to give Nimona a chance in 2021-2 to revive it after Disney shuttered Blue Sky Studios in 2021, but I doubt that's why the film looks the way it does, and the fact that what already existed for Nimona the film would have been a key convincing point there (e.g., here's our project that kind of looks like that/is planned to look that really popular thing).

Part-time soulmate, full-time problem by Missy_dee811 for Wingheads (616, 2.2k)
Steve's friends take him out for his 30th birthday, and he meets someone unexpected.
-
What's The Point? by shaggybeetle for Neverever (MCU, 2.5k)
Steve is getting further and further from intimacy with Tony and he is noticing. He wears clothes to bed, he avoids sexual contact and is overall pretty sad... Time to try make him feel like he IS worth it.
-
Shifts in Time by betheflame for UisceOneLove (AU, 2k)
Steve's studio would be the perfect place to work, if only the stupid mechanic downstairs would stop blasting AC/DC.
-
A Time For Stickball and Guinness by geekymoviemom for muchmoremajestic (MCU, 10k)
When Tony’s first attempt at celebrating Steve’s birthday doesn’t go the way he hoped, he decides to try again.
-
The Wonder Garden by laiwrites for AvengersNewB (AU, Art)
From this prompt: "Steve is a vampire from another land ( he was skinny took the elixir, fought the enemies then got captured by these people who catch extraordinary creatures because they're very expensive ) and he is kept with other extraordinary creatures that Tony owns in this wonder garden and Tony has no idea because why would he know the details of these things. I am imagining Steve having to move around in his cage to keep in the shade and at noon he has this very narrow space to keep away from the sun. Then one day Tony is visiting the garden and stumbles into a human in one of the displays and goes WTF. "get this one transferred to the residence right this second."
-
The weather outside is frightful by BladeoftheNebula for captainstars (AU, 5k)
“I can’t believe this!”
Steve paused, his hand hovering over the piece of firewood. Was that—?
“Of all the idiotic, selfish—“
The last of the words were cut off by the wind, but that was definitely a voice.
Steve frowned. The voice was too clear to be coming from a truck or a car, which meant they must be on foot. He looked at the heavy fall of the snow. No one should be out in this.
Or, Tony is an omega in distress, and Steve is just the alpha-in-shining armour he needs
-
The One In Which Steve Gets Arrested And It Actually Ends Well by endlesstwanted for RoseRose (AU, 2.3k)
The day before one of his exams, Steve goes with Bucky and their friends to a protest that leads them to jail. Lucky for them, Tony Stark bails them out. Not so lucky for Tony, Steve refuses the billionaire’s offer.
-
Feels Like Home by tinystark616 for laiwrites (MCU, 8k)
Steve thinks there must be something fundamentally wrong with him when adjusting to his new life seems scarier than fighting an army of aliens. He knows how to fight. He's excellent at it. What he doesn't know is how to feel like he belongs in the future.
Or,
Steve doesn't think he will ever be happy in the 21st century. Until, of course, he starts to — slowly — fall in love with Tony Stark.
-
Break the Ice by picturecat for AsterouslyDisasterous (616, 1.8k)
Steve’s therapist’s name was Heloise; he saw her twice a month and answered her pointedly non-pointed questions about the connections he made in the future.
-
The Nearness of You by UisceOneLove for Thahire  (AU, 2.6k)
Steve wasn't thinking when he protected Tony's protege and got a bullet for the move. He doesn't know what to think of Tony Stark showing up at his apartment, either.
-
can my heart keep quiet by ishipallthings for XtaticPearl (AU, 4.7k)
Oh, what a farce this all is! Steve had sought refuge in the Van Dynes’ gardens for the very purpose of avoiding more talk of Mr. Stark’s engagement, and avoiding Mr. Stark himself. Yet, here he stands now, prepared to make idle conversation with the man for the sake of decorum.
In which there is a secluded garden, a tangled web of misunderstandings, a man with a broken heart, another man hoping to propose marriage, and an eventual happy ending.
-
The Hazards of Falling in Love (Rescue Me) by EmmaLostInWonderland for BladeoftheNebula (AU, 4k)
“So that’s your name?” Rogers hasn't looked away from him once. His eyes are a piercing blue, and Tony barely manages to keep from squirming under his gaze.
“Yeah. Or Telecommunications Operator Stark, if we’re getting technical about it.”
“Are we?”
Tony tilts his head slightly. “Depends. Can I call you Steve?”
The man grins. “Wouldn’t have it any other way, Tony.”
// Tony Stark doesn't date firemen. But he'll make an exception for Battalion Chief Steve Rogers.
-
Trying not to lose my sensibility by Girl_Back_There for iam93percentstardust (AU, 6.5k)
In the weeks leading up to his heat, Steve rethinks about his relationship with Brock. And his fading friendship with Tony.
-
i'm wonderstruck, dancing around all alone by iam93percentstardust for ishipallthings (AU, 1.8k)
The real reason Tony wanted to do this movie, the one that he'll never tell anyone about, was because when he’d asked his agent who would be playing Chris, she’d slyly smiled at him and told him that it was Steve Rogers.
“Oh,” he’d squeaked, cleared his throat, and tried again in a more normal octave, but by then it was too late. Natasha had laughed at him and made the call without even waiting for him to agree to the audition.
He’s not quite sure if he should thank her or fire her for that.
-
Trapped by Obani for picturecat (EMH, 2.9k)
Captain America and Iron Man find themselves stranded after a battle.
-
the depths of some divine despair by meidui for Missy_dee811 (MCU, 11k)
Steve blinks and stares down at Natasha, drawing a blank.
“Who’s Tony?”
-
Spoken in strokes by captainstars for capsicleonyourleft (MCU, 1.5k)
Iron Man is the person he finds himself painting the most. His communication with Tony is stilted, and he allows himself to hide the things he wants to say within the canvas. It's easy to let himself trace red over gold, with reflections of blue. To say, trust me, when he doesn't have to look Tony in the eye while doing it.
-
From the Same Vine by Arukou for jayjayverse (616, 7k)
In the grand scheme of things, Tony’s a sinner through-and-through, though not necessarily in the Biblical sense. His sins are earthly, directed against his fellow man, and though he might work for a lifetime, he’ll never make up for the pain he’s caused. But like Lancelot, he’ll try anyway. He’ll atone the only way he knows how—saving lives with the Avengers.
-
bake my breath away by earliebirb for MayBiTheWay (AU, 3.9k)
Steve develops a crush on one of his bakery's regulars, charming businessman-slash-inventor Tony Stark. He is not stupid enough to ever think Tony would ever like him back, though.
Besides, Tony is already in a relationship.
As it turns out, Steve might have been wrong about a couple of things.
-
Marks On Your Skin by Becci_chan for earliebrb (MCU, 2.7k)
Steve still wondered what Natasha was trying to achieve by making him confess his feelings for Tony. She was right, of course she was. It didn’t mean Steve wanted to admit it in front of her. Or in a place where Tony could come in any time. He had almost heard him say he wasn’t in love with him. Steve wasn’t sure which would have been worse.
-
totally booked at the library by starksnack for girl_back_there (AU, 2k)
Between teaching their classes, Prof. Rogers meets Prof. Stark at the library for a very important appointment.
-
A Friend for a Man by XtaticPearl for geekymoviemom (MCU, 2.8K)
It's a sweltering day, ill-fitting pants, and a frazzled friend that drag an exhausted Peter around town on an adventure he never asked to be part of. Sometimes you do that for friends though, and Peter is just that to Steve Rogers. A bewildering friend.
-
Come Morning Light by Prince-of-Midgard (starkspangledsoldier) for starksnack (AU, 4.1k)
The story of Tony Stark falling in love with a mob boss
-
Chamber of Reflection by Thahire for meidui (MCU/Ults/3490, 10.1k)
A few years after retiring, Steve and Tony get a surprise visit from another Steve. Steve Rogers from Earth 1610 is lost, grappling with the new century he’s been unceremoniously dropped in, with confusing feelings for his new teammate, with himself.
Steve and Tony decide to get involved.
-
Alter by AsterouslyDisasterous for Prince-of-Midgard (MCU, 1.4k)
Steve and Tony go undercover to protect a recently widowed Mary Parker and her son, Peter.
-
Birthday Wishes by Neverever for vicspeaks (3490/AA, 3.3k)
The multiverse council of Tonies think that they know what to get their Steves for their birthdays. But maybe they should have talked to their Steves first
-
The Journey You Take Me On by MayBiTheWay for suchmadnesss (MCU, 5k)
“And I am Iron Man” Tony’s voice filled with pride albeit laced with sadness and regret of things that could have rang through his ears, tying a knot in his stomach. He reached for Tony’s hand, trying to hold it, save who he had loved the most, persevere among all the pain and suffering they went through.
He did hold Tony’s hand as Tony snapped he faintly remembered, the cold metal of the gauntlet snapping into his forearm that was bleeding. Pieces of it wrapping around his wrist and enveloping his fingers mere seconds before he snapped them.
-
Melt With Your Touch by RoseRose for Becci_chan (MCU, 2.1k)
Steve safewords. He and Tony figure out how to get Steve what he wants anyway.
Light BDSM, sensation play

It’s Steve Birthday! by jayjayverse for shaggybeetle (MCU, 1.3k)

The Consequential Thing by AvengersNewB for purpleicedteas (MCU, 3.1k)

Except for the got-wrenching, blinding pain of not being Tony's boyfriend-which Steve's learnt to live with over the years-his life is a-okay. An unfortunate encounter with Steve's terrible ex, however, changes everything.

My idea for a “Bob’s Burgers” theme park ride!
"The Bob's Burgers Movie Ride" is a 2-part interactive attraction that opened up with the new "Seymour Bay" section of "Disney's Hollywood Studios" theme park in Orlando, Florida on May 30th, 2025. This attraction and entire themed area surrounding it replaced the former "Animation Courtyard" area. The ride combines live actors, a tram tour, and a trackless ride system with some tracked segments where intense scenes occur. The ride is based off of the 2022 animated movie "The Bob's Burgers Movie" by "20th Century Studios".
For the first 6 months of its opening, due to it being an E-ticket attraction, the ride was only available to guests who utilized and got Virtual Queue timeslots at either 7:00am or 1:00pm via the use of the "MyDisneyExperience" mobile app. After the 6 months ended on November 30th, 2025, the Virtual Queue timeslots option got removed, allowing guests to board the ride normally via the "Stand-By Entrance", the "Lightning Lane" entrance, or "Single Rider" entrance.
The ride has garnered praise from critics and guest polls, with praise being focused on the ride's storytelling narrative, the use to 2 ride vehicles, the performances of the live actors, and the special effects. All of the original voice actors reprise their voiceover rolls for the purpose of the attractions.
Part 1: Location, Setting, and Ride's Entrance:
The area around the ride includes the restaurants of "Ocean Avenue", such as "Bob's Burgers", "Jimmy Pesto's Pizzeria", etc over on the left side, an interactive show attraction on the right, and finally towards the back over a large manmade lake, a recreation of "Wonder Wharf" and various attractions featured from the cartoon. However, behind the "Scream-I-Cane" roller coaster, and towards the very back of "Wonder Wharf", is the main attraction called "The Bob's Burgers Movie Ride".
The exterior of the ride is a bright yellow rectangular-shaped building, with a larger, blue-painted hidden show building, which houses the main components of the attraction. The front facade of the attraction includes the name of the attraction displayed on a large sign in large red letters, an below the sign, from left to right, is a "Stand-By Entrance" entryway, a "Lightning Lane" entryway, and a "Single Riders" entryway. The left side of the entryways has a height measurement marker, and the right side of the entryways has a basic sign with various health-related warnings for guest, as well as a posted warning that some parts of the attraction are too intense for younger guests.
The "Stand-By Entrance" sign has a built-in "Wait Time" clock, and during the attractions opening months, virtual queues are utilized. After a few months, they are phased out, and replaced with regular "Stand-By Entrance" usage, the use of the "Lightning Lane" and "Single Rider" entrance, and finally, the use of "Disability Access Service" for guests with disabilities.
Part 2: The queue and pre-attraction lockers:
Guests proceed to enter through either one of the 3 queue entrances, and for the first part of the queue, all 3 go straight, being next to each other, all separated via metal chain-link railing. The queue itself is supposed to be a museum that Calvin Fischoeder had constructed, detailing the history of "Wonder Wharf" and his family tree. Displays within this part of the attraction include large, framed family photos and portraits fastened to the walls, a few family heirlooms on display in pedestals topped with glass cases, and framed legal documents, such as wills and testaments, old ride construction blueprints, and newspaper front pages regarding the Fischoeders.
Guests then proceed to move forward in the queue, all before entering another room, which happens to be a room filled with old artifacts on display, that reference episodes that the Fischoeders messed up in but didn't get in trouble for. Examples include a wishbone from the episode "Dawn of The Peck", a baseball ball and bat from the episode "Torpedo", and many more. This part of the queue also has several TV monitors fixed on the upper corners of the room's ceiling, showing news reports of the body of Cotton Candy Dan being discovered in the sinkhole from the film, Calvin's arrest as a suspect, and of course, his bail being paid by himself and his release until his trial later on.
Then, guests proceed down a left turn, leading into a large white-tiled room with brown walls, and a blue-grey ceiling. The room is filled with hundreds of small rectangular-shaped lockers, with the locker units/sections all lining the walls of the room, leaving a wide doorway for guests to continue going through. All lockers have their own set of park ticket scanners, and a guest must scan their ticket card or paper ticket's barcode in order for a random available locker to unlock and swing open. Guests must then put all loose articles and pocket items, such as cellphones, wallets, hats, sunglasses, purses, bookbags, souvenirs, reusable cups, etc. Items that can remain on a guest include prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses, body casts, prosthetic limbs, and anything else that is essential for the guest.
If a guest requires more than one locker for all of their stuff, they can ask a nearby carnie (a cast member), for a laminated "Locker Ticket" card, which is then scanned and allows another locker to unlock and swing open for the guest. Guests then must swing the lockers shut, and then proceed out of the locker room via the open wide doorway. If a guest's item is too large to fit into one of the regular lockers, there are larger ones available, and a credit card must be swiped before one can be rented. They are free for 2 hours before the guest's card is charged 2 dollars. These lockers are to be unlocked with a guests phone number being typed in via a keypad upon the ride being over.
There are also several metal sinks available, for if a guest enters with a souvenir cup that is full of a beverage of any kind, they will have to dispose of said beverages into the sink, and clean out the cups with the provided water faucets and paper towel dispensers, all before placing the empty cups in the lockers.
All locker tickets are then used at the end of the ride to unlock the lockers, and allow guests to get their stuff back. The lockers are double-sided, allowing guests to retrieve their items when the ride is over. Above the lockers on all 4 sides of the room, TV screens are fixed to the wall, with a pre-recorded message presented by Kuchi Kobi, telling guests all of the aforementioned rules regarding the lockers, with a concluded warning that upon exiting the locker room, all guests will proceed through a metal detector checkpoint to make sure they have nothing on them.
Part 3: The metal detector checkpoint:
Guests then proceed out of the locker room, and make their way to a metal detector checkpoint, located in a brown room with brown walls, a wooden floor, and a blue ceiling. There, a row of 3 metal detectors are set up, with cast members dressed up as carnies holding handheld metal detectors, to use them in case guests set of the metal detectors as they walk through it. Once the guests past through, if they don't set off the detectors, they're free to continue to the main ride boarding station. However, if the metal detectors do go off, the cast members check them over with a handheld metal detector for either melt buttons, belt buckles, zippers, or prohibited items.
If is just a piece of metal that is part of the guest's clothing, no further action is taken. However, if any loose articles that aren't essential are found, the guest is instructed to go back to the locker room and put it away into a locker. If the guest refuses, they will be denied boarding the attraction until they comply. Once they clear the guest to proceed, the guest continue and then enter the main ride's boarding room.
Part 4: The boarding area:
Guests then proceed down a straight section of queue, with this section of blue being inside of a straight room resembling a wooden room built out of wood of the pier, with the walls, ceiling, and floor made out of wood. At this point, an artificial saltwater scented can be smelled by guests, creating the illusion of guests being outside near the ocean, when the entire ride takes place indoors. Finally, guests enter the main boarding station room via a large wide open doorway.
The main boarding station is made to look like the beach area near "Wonder Wharf" at sunset, complete with a yellow-painted floor with a grainy texture to resemble beach sand, and orange-red-purple-yellow-painted walls to resemble the sky during sunset, complete with a projection of a sun halfway over the horizon. The ceiling remains black, and has metal rigging, colorful spotlights, hidden audio speakers, and hidden black cables, as they control the lighting of the boarding station room. Sounds of ocean waves crashing against the beach and sounds of seagulls making calling noises are played in the background, completing the illusion of guests being in an actual beach.
The boarding area's main queue becomes a single line, lined with wooden poles and rope railing, enhancing the theming of it being a beachside even more. The queue goes left, and then right, followed by a few more lefts and rights, all before reaching the far-end of the end of the room, where the main boarding station is located. The boarding platform itself is made up of 2 separate boarding sections, with there being 9 rows of long bench seats, with enough space for 8 people per row, all for a total of 72 riders per ride vehicle.
At that point, as guests approach the end of the queue, a carnie cast member assigns all incoming guest a row in one of the two boarding station waiting sections, with each row being separated by a metal railing, and the ends of said row being closed off at the ends by a small metal gate. After both rows are filled with 72 guests each, the first ride vehicle rolls up into the station from a tunnel on the right, all before pulling up alongside the boarding station platform on the left. This ride vehicle is a 1-car tour tram, similar in size and scale to the ride vehicles used on the ride "Skull Island: Reign of Kong" at "Islands of Adventure" in Orlando, Florida, only they're painted white, with a thick dark blue strip, and 2 thin yellow stirps. The sides of the tram also has the words "Wonder Wharf" tours displayed, in large red and yellow letters.
Both and left and right side of the tram have a series of automatic sliding doors that seal up on the ends of the rows, locking guests inside until they're unlocked by a cast member. The tops of each bench seat have a metal handlebar on them, allowing guests to be able to hold on tight during the ride. The front of the tram has a driver's hub, with a driver being on the left, and a speaking tour guide actor or actress positioned on the right. The tour guide is named Taylor, and is played by either a man or a woman.
Once the tram arrives in the boarding station, the automatic sliding doors on the left automatically slide open once activated by a cast member, and the gates at the end of the queue swings open, allowing guests to board the ride, sliding down to the end of their assigned row of seats until the row is full. Once everyone is seated, the gates at the end of the boarding queue swing shut, and the doors at the end of the tram's left side automatically slide shut. Then, the tram is dispatched out of the station, beginning the first part of the ride...
Part 5: The main ride (part 1):
The tram drives out of the station as the tour guide introduces himself or herself as Taylor, and she tells the guests that they're going to go on a tour of "Wonder Wharf", the backstage area of "Wonder Wharf", as well as the backyard of the Fischoeder Mansion, and some parts of the town. The driver then continues driving out of the station, entering a massive set that resembles "Wonder Wharf" just as the sun disappears over the horizon. Taylor then gives a spiel on the history of "Wonder Wharf", and how Calvin inherited it from his father.
As Taylor continues by telling the history of the many rides there, the tram's radio suddenly activates, and Calvin's voice comes on, calling out "Tram 1 Guide: Taylor. please come in!". Taylor responds back, saying that she/he has their tour group all safe and sound. Calvin then tells Taylor that needs him/her to do him a favor, and to pick up Grover, and then deliver him to his secret clubhouse, a place that he will give Taylor access to, so he can drop off some books on tape so he can go with his brother Felix on a "trip". Taylor agrees to this before being told here to pick him up from, and then hangs up the radio.
Taylor then continues to drive around the dark "Wonder Wharf", where she tells more of the history spiel, all before driving into a large set resembling the main road, passing many restaurant and businesses on "Ocean Avenue", and narrowly avoiding the sinkhole outside of "Bob's Burgers". Finally, the tram stops outside an apartment building complex, where a live actor playing Grover Fischoeder, wearing his gym outfit and with a brown leather briefcase, is waiting for them. The tram stops, and Taylor opens her door of the driver's hub, telling him who he/she is, an directing him to come on inside. The Grover actor then nods and climbs onboard the tram, sitting on a seat in between Taylor and the driver. Taylor then closes up her side door as Grover buckles up, and then, the driver continues driving through the massive recreation of Bog Harbor, turning around at a traffic circle, and then making the way back to "Wonder Wharf".
The tram then makes its way back to "Wonder Wharf" and then makes it way towards a life-sized recreation of "The Mole Hill". The tram then turns around a corner, and then, stops at a marked rectangular parking spot behind it. After Grover tells Taylor to have the driver stop there, to which Taylor and the driver complies. Then, Grover uses the radio to contact Calvin, letting him know that the tram has arrived. The voice of Calvin then gives the-all clear, and even invites the guest to join him and take a quick tour of his clubhouse. Grover then hangs up the radio, and then pushes a hidden button on his cellphone. This action makes the entire parking space below the tram suddenly slowly descend via a hydraulic lift.
The platform takes guests 2 stories down below ground level, all before stopping at a station descended to look like a concrete unloading station, complete with a rectangular-shaped tunnel of a short length, a few lights, and a large set of automatic double doors, all located on the tram's right side. The Grover actor then thanks Taylor for her service, and then gets off the driver's hub of the tram. He then opens one of the double doors, and disappears into the next setting beyond the doors. Once he closes the door behind him, Taylor closes up the door on his/her side, and begins to get ready to continue the tour. However, all of the lights suddenly go out, and Taylor freaks out over an unexpected blackout. As everyone is in complete darkness, some noises can be heard in the background, including the voices of the Belcher kids, Calvin and Felix Fischoeder, and then, Bob and Linda Belcher.
Taylor wonders what is going on upstairs, and attempts to contact Calvin on the radio. However, instead, she/he hears something very disturbing...Grover revealing that he is indeed the one who killed Cottan Candy Dan, as the events in the movie taking place in the clubhouse are going on in real time. Taylor, stunned by this, begins to record everything after pushing a "Record" button on the radio, and then tells guests there is a change of plans, and that after they get back up to the surface, they will rush over to the police station and turn in the recording to the police. At that point, Taylor suddenly notices that Grover left his briefcase in the driver's hub, and as the recording reveals both Calvin and Felix being forced into the submarine, and the Belcher kids making an escape by the clubhouse's secret tunnel, Taylor realizes that Grover will return for it in a moment, and is scared over facing him due to what he/she now knows.
However, as Taylor picks up the suitcase to get ready to return it to Grover without looking suspicious, she opens it by mistake, and a few paper documents come out. Taylor scrambles to gather them all together. As he/she does this, Taylor suddenly comes across one with Grover's well-plotted evil scheme listed on it, and begins to read it out loud to the guests, shocked by the moment as he/she goes on. Grover suddenly appears through the door, and then catches Taylor read the end of the list. Taylor then notices Grover, and freezes upon seeing him. After a few seconds, Taylor then chuckles nervously, puts the paper back into the briefcase, seals it shut, and holds it out for Grover to take.
Grover then slowly approaches the driver's hub, and takes the briefcase back. Upon doing so, Grover asks Taylor if she believed anything she was reading, to which Taylor chuckles nervously, saying he/she doesn't believe it one bit. Grover then says that he isn't convinced, and Taylor tries to reassure him that it is the truth. However, Taylor's hand accidently bumps the "Playback Recording" button on the radio, causing it to playback all that Taylor recorded. Grover then glares at Taylor, steps back towards the double doors, opens one of them, reaches his hand inside, and then pulls out a crossbow, aiming it at the tram and all of the people onboard. He then demands that Taylor and all of the guests put their hands up, to which the guests comply. He then approaches Taylor, aiming the crossbow at her neck, demanding that he/she unlock the tram doors, and for all of the guests to follow him off the tram, or else there will be "deadly consequences".
Taylor complies, and pushes a button that makes all of the tram's doors on the right slide open automatically, and then all of the guests, along with Taylor, proceed to all get out of the tram. Grover then pushes a button to get the double doors to automatically swing open, revealing the setting of Calvin's secret clubhouse. As the new setting is revealed, Grover then tells all of the guests that from there on out, they'll need to do what he says, or else they will get seriously hurt. He then mentions that he will have no problem firing his crossbow at anyone who doesn't listen to his demands. He also then tells the driver to not say a word to anyone, and he agrees to keep the secret. Grover then leads the guests through the doors of the clubhouse set, and this begins the next part of the attraction...
Part 6: The main ride (part 2)
Once guests enter the life-size recreation of Calvin's clubhouse, Grover grabs Taylor, and forces him/her to sit in a nearby armchair, all before taking out some rope and tying his/her hands up in front of him/her, warning Taylor that if he/she tries to escape or fight back, that he'll use the crossbow on her. He then forces all of the guests to stand around the circular golden railing surrounding the ocean hole in the center of the room, and to face the walls of the clubhouse. As the guests proceed to do so, Grover closes up the automatic doors, and then tells his guests all about his scheme, and how he is going to lock them up as he proceeds to burn down "Wonder Wharf", and then, he'll go off and finish the Belchers once and for all. During this whole process, the actor playing Grover doesn't break character under any circumstances, unless there is an emergency, or unless he's dealing with a guest being sponsored by the "Make-A-Wish Foundation".
The clubhouse setting is a full-scale recreation to the one in the film, and has everything inside, including a large steampunk-Esque submarine, a full drink bar, several framed vintage family photos, and the lady statue from the movie. The clubhouse also has a row of automatic sliding single doors that lead into a wide large, air-conditioned chamber resembling a supply closet, complete with a TV monitor built into the wall on the left, and fitted with another passageway door made to look like the wall located at the very back of each one. These sliding doors are arranged in a row, all in a semicircular arrangement using up half of the circular clubhouse. There are a total of 6 sliding doors in the clubhouse room, and each wide "closet" room can hold up to 12 guests at a time.
Grover then begins the proceeds of asking how many guests are in each group, and then assigning guests to standing in a straight line in front of each sliding door. Once everyone is assigned their closet room, the actor playing Grover is then given a hidden signal via his cellphone that the closets can be loaded with guests, and then uses a hidden control panel built into the wall to push a button that makes the doors automatically slide open. Grover then makes all the guests step into the closet room behind the doors, and then, as the guest face open doorway, Grover goes from door to door, saying that the guests should make themselves comfortable inside as this is the last room they'll be in before they perish in a fire. He then does a villainous laugh as he pushes a switch that makes the closet room door slide shut and lock.
The TV screen then turns on, and shows a live video feed of the main clubhouse room, where Grover is busy reading the fuse, and while Taylor is still seated with his/her hands tied up in front of him/her. Taylor then looks left and right for a way to escape and call for help, and then notices an animated Calvin Fischoeder appearing in one of the windows of the submarine that he and Felix are trapped inside of. They are actually being shown via a circular TV screen built into the submarine's windows to create the illusion. Calvin doesn't say anything, but looks at the statue, and then does a twisting motion with his hands, all while looking over at Taylor. He then proceeds to mouth the words "Open secret passageway", and "Escape". Taylor then gets the message, quickly rushes up to the statue, and twists the secret switches on it.
At that point, the secret doors at the back wall of the closet rooms suddenly automatically rise up to reveal a wooden passageway, leading into another circular room, which acts as the boarding area for the second part of the attraction. Taylor then screams for the guests to get out via the secret passageway, and that he'll/she'll hold Grover off so they can escape. At that point, as the guests begin to rush out of the closet room and down the wooden passageway tunnel, Grover notices this, and angrily tries to attack Taylor, only for her to try to fight back in a well-choreographed stage fight. It is at this point that the TV monitors turn off, leaving guests alone once again.
All 12 guests in each closet proceed to make their way down the passageway tunnel, all before making it into the circular wooden boarding station room, where the next ride vehicle awaits them. This ride vehicle happens to be a larger version of a clam car from the movie, only with no plexiglass dome, is a trackless ride vehicle like in "Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance", and there are 3 rows of seats, with 4 seats per row, allowing space for 12 guests at a time. The seats all have a single seatbelt that goes over the guest's lap, and a few posted signs about what to do and what not to do during the ride on the clam car. A ride operator is tucket away in a hidden control room behind one of the walls in the circular boarding room, as they're job is to dispatch the ride vehicles while having it look like the guests are on their own in a perilous situation.
Taylor's voice then comes on over the room's intercom speaker, sounding like he's/she's calling out to the guests while struggling to fight with Grover, telling them to quickly get on the ride, and make sure they're seatbelts are fastened. As he/she says this, Grover gets the upper hand, the intercom cuts out, leaving guests all on their own. Once the guests do so, a series of small doors on the car's left side automatically slide shut, and then, a hidden camera does a seatbelt check of the guest, signaling to the hidden ride operator if the car can be dispatched or not. Once the ride operator is given the all-clear to go, a hidden curved door opens up behind the guests at the back of the circular room, and finally, the trackless clam car vehicle backs out of the station, all before turning around to face forward, and then the real ride begins once the circular room's door closes back up again. As this happens, the sound of Grover bursting into the boarding station room, and yelling angrily "GET BACK HERE!" is briefly heard by guests as the ride begins...
Part 7: The main ride (Part 3):
The clam car then turns to the right, and speeds forward to begin the main ride. The clam car is an aforementioned trackless ride vehicle, but some scenes/sections of the ride utilize a track for the attraction's more intense scenes and elements that a trackless ride system can't accomplish. From here on out, the live actor playing Grover is no longer present in the attraction, but instead, animatronics of the Grover Fischoeder from the cartoon is present, with his original voice actor reprising his role for the attraction.
The clam cars all make their way forward, getting away from the row of circular boarding rooms, and then turning to the right, beginning the next ride of the attraction. The first room of the ride is a life-sized recreation of the underside of the "Wonder Wharf" pier, complete with hundreds of piles of various size, shapes, and colors of stuffed animals. The clam car speeds forward and makes its way around the piles of stuffed animals, but then suddenly, an animatronic of Grover driving the lobster car from the movie appears from between 2 random piles of toys, and begins chasing after the car. The clam car makes several sharp swerving turns in an attempt to get away from Grover.
However, as the clam car makes its getaway, another clam car appears in front of it, showing animatronics of the Belcher family inside, warning the guests to get out of there. The clam car then turns to the left, and then continues to speed through the maze of stuffed animal piles. Finally, the clam car speeds towards the end of the pier, but then another lobster car with an animatronic of Grover suddenly appears in front of the guest's clam car, causing it to quickly make a sharp left turn towards the edge of the pier's underside compartment. Then, to create the illusion of the clam car flying through the air, the clam car rolls into a special track system, and then speeds down a sharp drop, all while spinning around in circles at the same time, as the top part of the clam car can spin around or move up, down, and sideways via hidden hydraulic actuators.
The clam car then makes it down to a large recreation of the beach surrounding "Wonder Wharf" and "Ocean Avenue" at night. The ride's housing show building is constructed to have 2 large life-sized city recreations, with one being on top of another, and each one being 2 floors tall. The setting on the upper half of the show building is used for the tram tour segment, while the setting on the bottom is used for the clam car chase segment. All sets are life-sized for accuracy reasons, and to complete the illusion of both cities being visited at once, despite them being 2 totally different sets.
Once back on the beach setting, the clam car is slowed down via electromagnets, and then, the car slides back onto the "ground" surrounded by fake sand, and it continues its use of its trackless ride system. The clam car then speeds down the beach setting, and then speeding up the nearby stairs up to the "street" level, where the main town is located. This is done as another track fixture and some powerful electromagnets pulling the clam car up the stairway, and once back on the street level, the clam car returns to using its trackless ride system.
The clam car then sharply turns to the right onto the main street setting, and then speeds down Ocean Avenue, and past the sinkhole on the left, narrowly missing it in the process. Suddenly, as the clam car turns to the right at the end of the street, another animatronic of Grover in the lobster car appears out from an alleyway and tries to crash into the guests from the front. But the clam car swerves out of the way, and then spins around a nearby traffic circle several times. Then, the clam car speeds forward towards the "Wagstaff" school building, all before speeding up another set of tracks on the front stairway, and then bursting through the front doors.
The car then speeds down the hallway of the empty school, and then, suddenly, as the car speeds past a hallway with lockers lining both walls on the left and right side, Grover's voice is heard behind a row of lockers on the left, and suddenly, said row of lockers tip over towards the clam car, all while the voice of Grover is saying that he's going to crush the guests into a pancake. However, as the row of lockers tumbles over towards the guests, clam car suddenly makes a last-minute right turn down another hallway, all while the voice of Grover screams in the background, demanding the guests to "COME BACK HERE!". The clam car then makes its way to the end of the hallway, bursting through a set of double doors at the very back of the school, and after going down to the ground level via a small ramp, speed through the playground, and then through an open gate built-into the chain-link fence, onto the street.
The clam car then turns to the right, and continues speeding down the street setting. Suddenly, as the car speeds down the street setting and makes it down to an intersection, a random rig truck comes down a street from the right, and it narrowly hits the clam car, as an animatronic of a truck driver suddenly slams on the breaks, screaming "HEY, I'M DRIVING HERE!" to the guests. The car then makes a sharp left turn to avoid hitting the rig truck, and then proceeds to speed towards a large building construction site setting. The metal barricade fences are then "knocked over", and the clam car speeds into the construction site. However, as the car speeds through the site, an animatronic of Grover suddenly comes out from behind a parked bulldozer, and aims his crossbow at the guests, all before quickly making a sharp right turn and into a large dug-up hole in the ground, causing it to slide down a downward curved slope track, and then entering a massive setting resembling a swear that is located underneath the attraction's lower level, complete with a trackless ride strip positioned over a manmade sewer river of "grey water".
The clam car then speeds down the sewer setting, all while water splashes against the sides of the walls of the sewer. Grover's voice is heard overhead, screaming at the guests to hold still and to let themselves be killed. The car then makes a sharp left turn, and then, after another straight section of track, the car them makes it to a huge wall themed and painted to resemble a wall of dirt. The wall then "bursts" open, and then the car drives into a large recreation of the bottom of the sinkhole. Once the car drives inside of it, the car slides onto a hidden section of track with a series of high-speed rollers built into it. The track leads straight up out of the sinkhole, and back to ground level.
Next to the clam car on the left, an animatronic of the clan car with the Belcher family inside is positioned next to them, with flexible screens built into their clam car's dome window, showing the Belchers looking over at the guests with great concern. Bob yells at the guests to get out of there, as they're in big danger. Suddenly, achieved by a curved dome-shaped transparent screen right above the guests, Grover is seen in his lobster car, pushing the huge mound of dirt into the sinkhole, in an attempt to bury the Belchers and the guests alive.
And then, like in the film, Bob drive his clam car into the pipe within the sink hole, which causes a suddenly upward launch of the his and the guests' clam car, and as it launches upward and out of the sinkhole, the dome-shaped screen quickly slides open. As the Belcher's are "stuck" near the hole's entrance on the surface, the guests' car keeps speeding forward again, and then it speeds off down the road, and through an alleyway.
Once at the other side of the alleyway, an animatronic of Grover is seen attempting to sneak back into the gym via the window. But then he turns around, and sees the the guests, and then the car immediately reverses for a bit, and turns to the left down another alleyway path while remaining backwards. Then, the car speeds down a slope, and then, speeds through the local park, passing the lake and hidden sprayers lightly spray riders on the left side with mist. Then, after hidden a "rock" and going out of control, spinning in circles around the Ranger Station building, the car proceeds to speed through the park's heavily wooded area, and finally, gets stuck in a "ditch".
Then, another Grover animatronic appears with a chainsaw, and says that they're not going to escape alive, and proceeds to "cut down" a base of a tree. Then, right on cue, a massive animatronic tree begins to fall towards the guests. Suddenly, 2 thick branches sticking out of 2 trees on both the left and right side of the guests catch the tree, and save their lives. Grover freaks out over his plan failing, and tries to look around on the ground for his speargun. Suddenly, a large bear animatronic appears, and "nudges" car out of the hole, and the car begins speeding backwards again.
The car then spins around, and then, facing forward once again, speeds out of the park, and back onto the street. As it does, the car then rotates and then faces the left, and then speeds down the street again. After speeding a few feet, it makes a sharp right turn, and speeds down an alleyway. As it does, the car suddenly stops, and above everyone on the right, positioned on a metal fire escape, another animatronic of Grover is seen, aiming his speargun at the guests, all before taunting them. As he prepares to shoot, the car suddenly speeds backwards, and then, after "bouncing" off a mailbox, the car rotates to the left, and speeds down the road again.
The car speeds down the road again, and then speeds past the city, nearly hitting a nearby tree. By said tree, an animatronic of Mr. Frond is seen trying to coax his cat (another animatronic), Dr. Bojangles, to come down said tree. The cat nearly "falls" off the tree, and Mr. Frond yelps in fear, and then the car spins around in circles, and then, it speeds backwards, and then speeds down the city backwards for a bit. At another intersection, the car spins back around to face forward, and then speeds towards the "OMG Mall".
As the car reaches the doors of the mall, the doors are "slammed" open, and the car speeds all over the mall, with several "arrows" from the speargun firing at the walls, nearly missing the car by an inch. the car then drives through the food court, dodging tables and chairs, before finally, speeding up a "flight" of stairs via a track system, and then, after speeding all over th second floor, speeding into an elevator, and then elevator going back down to the first floor. The doors open, and the car speeds around the play area of the mall, and then out the back door, through the parking lot, and all as Suddnely, a motorcycle driven by Mudflap dodging them at the last minute.
The animatronic of Mudflap angrily says she's calling the cops, and the car speeds off some more, and the car drives back into the town, slightly turning left and right, looking for a place to go. Suddnely, a manhole cover in front of the car pops open, and Grover emerges, popping out up to his waist, and aims his speargun at the guests, evilly laughing about their fate, and readies to shoot them. Upon pulling the trigger, nothing happens, as he's out of arrows. Grover is stunned at this, and begins angrily cursing his defeat, and Suddnely several red, blue, and white flashing lights are seen, and sirens are heard, and several life-sized police car animatronics surround the scene.
The car then spins around, and then, with orders from the voices of cops, the car in a modest speed makes it way to the police station, all as some victory music plays on the background. As it does, Sargent Bosco's voice speaks and congratulates the guests for helping them lead Grover to them, and he hopes no one was in any danger or anything. Bosco then says that when the car comes to a full and complete stop, to unbuckle their seatbelts by pushing the bottom on the buckles, and to stand up, and carefully exit the car to their left, and head through the police station itself. The car then approaches the outside of a large recreation of the police station, and pulls up at an exit/deboarding station on the left, just outside the doors of the station. About 5 cars can be unloaded at a time.
Part 8: The Unloading Station, Exit Process, and Gift Shop:
The guests then exit the vehicle and as several cast members dressed up as police officers are positioned nearby, they thank the guests for being safe, and guide them in through the doors. They then follow several signs and makings on the floor, leading them past the receptionist desk, past the detention cells with animatronics of criminals locked up and doing nothing, and then, passing a desk where a live actor playing Bosco is positioned, ushering guests to move along and not waste his time. Finally, guests step out a back door, and walk through an alleyway, and proceed to walk down an exit queue made of police barriers.
They then proceed to walk through a small part of the town, before finally making it to "Wonder Wharf" at night, and the guests then are lead by another police officer cast member, telling guests to grab any stuff they put in the lockers before they're taken away by the police as evidence. The guests then proceed up an escalator marked "Authroized Carnies Only", and they made their way up to the ground level of the attraction above the massive set below. They then made it to the room where the backside of the double-sided lockers are, and guests use their park tickets and locker tickets to unlocks and open up the lockers, grab their personal belongings, and finally, they walk down a hallway of several pieces of displayed "Bob's Burgers" artwork and enter a large gift shop selling "Disney" and "Bob's Burgers" merchandise. on-ride photos can be picked up here, and of course, a set of automatic sliding exit/entry doors is where guests exit back outside into the park.

Edvard's Supernatural Guide: 2x08 Crossroad Blues
Spoilers up to 15x18
Supernatural’s 30th episode is an important one in the lore of the show, introducing the ideas of hellhounds, demonic deals, and humans being dragged to hell. Moreover it reveals where John ended up after his own deal with Azazel in 2x01 In My Time of Dying: on a torturer’s rack in hell. Or rather, a crossroads demon tells Dean where it wants him to believe John is. The veracity of the demon’s claim is never substantiated, but more on that later.
After a handful of frankly pretty dull episodes, 2x08 Crossroad Blues stands out for a number of reasons. Other than the new story elements mentioned above, it tells a solid story which progresses the plot of series two, reveals more of the depths of Dean’s despair than the ‘Dark Dean Arc’ from 2x02 to 2x04, and it is based on American folklore rather than European myths and legends. Not only is it American folklore, but it is black Americans’ folklore. As discussed in 1x08 Bugs and 1x19 Provenance for example, there is nothing whatsoever inherently wrong, prejudiced, or discriminatory about a story focusing on characters from one demographic, but given the show is supposed to be American horror taking place in America in the early 21st century and based on American folklore, one often wonders why there is so little from First Nations peoples’ myths and legends, and why black American folklore is in absentia.
Tumblr media
A lot of people would cite racism as the reason, but rather than active hateful racism, ignorance and an aversion to risk-taking seem satisfactory explanations to me. European fairy tales, folklore, legends, and myths are embedded in Anglophone cultures in a way that other ones simply are not. Executives do not like taking risks, and the writers did not have all the time in the world to research monsters and creatures from cultures foreign to them well enough to write about them in a way which would not offend people. They could not even research European lore properly: Loki is not Odin’s son, but rather his blood-brother: ‘samhain’ is pronounced ‘sowen’ and is a festival, not a demonic entity, and ‘vanir’ describes a Norse deity about as well as calling me European describes me. The cultural imperialism and Abrahamic chauvinism is on full display in 5x20 Hammer of the Gods, and this applies to European deities as well as African and Indian. The few occasions they ventured out into African, Indian, or Asian deities and creatures, they butchered them, and more often than not they butchered European ones, too.
Enough rambling: this episode includes actual American folklore from a marginalised demographic. Or rather, about a marginalised demographic: whether or not the real Robert Johnson performed a hoodoo ritual or what, the Mephisto-like deal could well be apocryphal additions from a European tradition. The real Robert Johnson made no claim to having made any deal or having performed a ritual to summon a devil and exchange his soul for musical talent:
"If you want to learn how to make songs yourself, you take your guitar and you go to where the road crosses that way, where a crossroads is. Get there, be sure to get there just a little 'fore 12 that night so you know you'll be there. You have your guitar and be playing a piece there by yourself...A big black man will walk up there and take your guitar and he'll tune it. And then he'll play a piece and hand it back to you. That's the way I learned to play anything I want."
From 'Tommy Johnson' by David Evans (London: Studio Vista, 1971) . Quote from Luckymojo.com
Tumblr media
People from a mainstream western Christian background will probably find practices such as hoodoo and voodoo ominous and sinister, but as an atheist with friends who are buddhist, ásatru, chaos witch, and whatever else, I can attest that most of it is no weirder than rituals practised in a church.
Think about it: believers convene in a sacred place before a deity’s altar, listen to a wise man recite some meaningful words, invoke the deity’s help, protection, guidance, and wisdom through formulaic chants (perhaps whilst holding the deity’s symbol or fetish), then partake of ritual food and drink. If one among them is ailing in body or spirit, the other believers will invoke divine forces through ritual to aid their fellow believer.
Anyway, the tale is that Robert Johnson suddenly gained extraordinary guitar-playing skills overnight after ‘selling his soul’ to a ‘devil’ at a crossroads in 1930. Eight years later, he dropped dead of unknown causes (explanations include Marfan syndrome and syphilis), whence come the stories of having sold his soul to Satan. Supernatural ran with this idea, and it became a cornerstone of the show’s own mythology for the next 14 years. According to the show, he made a deal with a crossroads demon in 1930 to become a talented musician in exchange for his soul, and the deal came due in 1938, whereupon he died muttering about ‘black dogs’.
People who have already watched the show will notice a few things strange about the cold open where Robert is supposedly killed by hellhounds: his deal came due in eight years, not the usual ten, and there was no apparent physical harm done to his body by canine claws and teeth. In fact, his death looks more like poisoning or a horrific seizure morphing into something else: even in this episode, hellhounds are shown to inflict physical violence on their prey. This raises the question of whether or not Robert in the show actually did make any kind of deal at all, whether the standard deal was for eight years in the 1930s, or whether the hellhounds worked differently back then. Curious also is the focus on the woman’s gold crucifix before Robert dies.
Whatever the case, similar deaths grab Dean and Sam’s attention whilst they are looking for more work in a café. As if to prove my earlier statement about butchering European lore, Sam uses Fenrir as an example of a hellhound or a ‘spectral spirit’, whereupon my palm collided with my brow in a gesture of exasperation: Fenris is more like a direwolf of divine proportions, and he is one of Loki’s children with Angrbodha. The coin-shith (Dogs of the Otherworld) from Scots Gaelic folklore, the Cŵn Annwn (Dogs of Antumnos/the Otherworld), or Kerberos/Cerberus would be a better example of hellhounds. Regardless, Dean’s comment that ‘[Fenrir] could hump the crap outta your left’ is hilarious because it is true, and definitely deserved a laugh.
What did not deserve a laugh was Dean not knowing what MySpace was, because that was clearly Sera Gamble insisting Dean is computer illiterate. The same man who at this point is a 27 year old in 2006 who has been researching demons on the internet for YEARS. My eyes hurt from rolling. Dean has no friends so has no real use for social media like Facebook, Bebo, Myspace, or whatever, but not knowing? I know what TikTok is and I have no interest in using the damn platform.
Speaking of laughs, Sam is in his usual Dean-is-a-stupid-embarrassment mode right at the beginning of the episode as he chastises Dean’s blasé attitude towards his own criminal record. You know, the criminal record Sam is responsible for after he had the shapeshifter’s murders pinned on Dean in 1x06 Skin, which Sam smirked at him for. That criminal record. If his ‘criminal record’ was ‘not funny’ because it ‘makes our job harder’, perhaps Sam could have prevented his friend scapegoating Dean in that episode. And as for Sam’s comment about ‘demonic pitbulls’: why pitbulls, Sam? What did pitbulls ever do to you? Bad dogs do not exist, just bad owners.
Tumblr media
The report of an architect who apparently died by suicide after making comments about ‘black dogs’ leads Dean and the Hairy One to said engineer’s work partner, played by the same actor who played Dean’s childhood hero Gunnar (the Scandiwegian version of Günther) the wrestler about ten years later. Their discussion reveals that the dead architect (named Seán Boyd) suddenly became a master in his field ten years earlier, which leads Dean to enquire at the vets about reports of black dogs over the last few months. This in turn leads them to somebody named Silvia (or rather her neighbour) who claims to have reported black dogs before going missing. Like Seán, Silvia had become a master in her field a decade earlier and risen to become the youngest chief surgeon at her hospital. This happened shortly after she visited a place called Lloyd’s Bar, which really is more of a shack than a pub.
Tumblr media
Outside the shack is a crossroads, and here Dean reveals that his passive knowledge of magic, witchcraft, and the otherworld is extensive: he recognises the yarrow plant (presumably unusual in Mississippi but hardly noteworthy in Finland) which is used in summoning, he knows the significance of crossroads, and knows without hesitating exactly where the box would be buried: right in the centre. Given John’s recent expiration, it is possible to conclude Dean may well have undergone recent research of his own into demonic deals to help him understand what happened, or even to try to summon a demon himself, as he wastes no time in doing later in the episode. As has been well-established at this point, Dean suffers both survivor’s guilt and suicidal ideations, first made clear in 1x12 Faith. Add to that the bereavement of his (abusive) father, and you have a perfect storm for Dean wanting to trade his soul for somebody else.
Tumblr media
Dean’s willingness to do just this is made explicit at the end of the episode: Dean’s refusal to answer Sam’s question about whether or not Dean considered making a deal to save John was answer enough, and turning the music up confirmed it. I have seen more than one person call Dean a hypocrite for his attitudes to demonic deals and trading one’s life to save another, when he is so ‘willing’ to do it himself, and indeed does do so in 2x22 All Hell Breaks Loose Pat 2. However, criticism like this gives me flashbacks to that whole ‘Dean never wipes his arse’ and ‘Dean is a paedophile’ nonsense which apparently passes as analysis.
As with people wondering ‘how can John know about demons etc in The Winchesters when in Supernatural we’re told John didn’t know about that stuff until after Mary’s death’, I am stupified by the apparent lack of cognitive capabilities of some people. The slightest bit of understanding of the human condition mixed with a little empathy is all you need to know why Dean thinks and does what he does.
After John’s death, he is the one left behind to deal with the loss and knowledge of John’s sacrifice. After Sam’s death, Dean is the one bereaved by untimely death: his conditioning to be his brother’s keeper, to sacrifice himself for Sam’s well-being, and his suicidal ideations and survivor’s guilt make his decision in 2x22 completely understandable. It was the natural end result of his being groomed for almost three decades to look out for Sammy.
But Dean’s anger at others for making demonic deals – especially to resurrect or save loved ones – is not applied to himself in the same way because Dean does not classify himself in the same manner he does other people. Since 1x12 Faith, Dean has believed he deserves to be dead and that his being alive is a problem which needs redress. The gay teacher (whose heart Dean still has) and Layla died while Dean lived. Dean sees himself as the person who has been resurrected and left to live with the loss of other people (whom be believes to be inherently better than him): his life is worthless, so it means nothing to him to throw it away to save others. It is not even his to begin with. Paula R Stiles wrote something similar:
Others in the show get angry with Dean and call him a hypocrite for saying deal-making is bad, but Dean doesn’t see it that way. For one thing, he feels his deal was a very bad idea (even if he doesn’t regret the result). For another, he doesn’t count himself as highly as others, so he doesn’t see his trading his soul as such a terrible thing as it would be for a “normal” human. He feels that he would be dead, were it not for John’s deal, so he is only balancing the scales (an idea the Crossroad Demon fosters in “Crossroad Blues”).
Even as late as season six, Death’s assertion that he only created further chaos with his deal is puzzling to Dean. Why would his deal be so bad? How is he different from the little girl in “Appointment in Samarra“? Shouldn’t he be dead, too? Shouldn’t he be in Hell? How is that not rebalancing the scales? The fact that it’s not remains an issue that the show continues to dance around rather than address head-on. It is a central issue for Dean – what about him requires that he live while others die, go to Heaven while others are damned, prevail while others fall? That quality remains obscure to him and partly to us.
This is also not the last time Dean will have to lose somebody because of a demon deal. Pay attention to what Dean says while talking to Evan, and then think of Dean on the floor after Cas’s death in 15x18 The Truth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene at the crossroads is intercut with Silvia (the doctor) hiding in a motel room and acting like somebody having serious withdrawal symptoms, and the scene ends with a hellhound breaking in through the window and presumably killing her. Given what happens to Dean in 3x16 No Rest for the Wicked, we can assume her death was savage and brutal. The same is presumably true of every person who makes a demonic deal, though it is never explicitly stated.
The fate of these people is also to be tortured ad infinitum unless they agree to become the torturer, and thereby become demons themselves. Ruby will reveal this to Dean in 3x09 Malleus Maleficarum. This is a significant departure from Abrahamic lore wherein demons have nothing to do with human souls being tortured. That said, the beliefs of many modern Christians and even the general public conception of what Christians believe has been profoundly influenced by John Milton’s Paradise Lost to such a degree that most people do not seem to know which is which. People know the story of Lucifer’s rebellion and fall from grace (which Supernatural will adopt into its lore), but how many people actually know that is not a biblical story? That is taken from Paradise Lost, but it has almost become an accepted part of many Christians’ cosmology.
youtube
Discovering the box of sinister-sounding spell components in the middle of the crossroads leads Dean and Sam to investigate the bar, and takes them to a middle-aged black man named George. The scene introduces the idea of goofer dust to keep hellhounds at bay, an idea which will be completely abandoned until episode 8x14 Trial and Error, after which it will vanish completely from Supernatural. The goofer dust might have been useful some time during series three, but whatever, Show. You do you.
George is exhausted and waiting to die. He summoned the crossroads demon a decade earlier outside Lloyd’s Bar to make a trade for artistic talent, but he neglected to ask for fame (like the figure in Greek mythology who gained eternal life but not eternal youth, and was doomed to age and wither away forever). As such, George is poor, lonely, and unknown. He is about to go to Hell and has only himself to blame. A rational but unfair assessment, but he seems to believe he deserves nothing less, blaming himself as he does for the others in Lloyd’s Bar making deals of their own and damning themselves to Hell in the process. This being the case, he is tired of the guilt and wants to die.
One would almost think the writers planned this in advance, so much does George sound like Dean. Dean himself will utter similar sentiments in 2x09 Croatoan, but coming from Dean’s mouth they sound more suicidal than fatalistic. Dean’s callous attitude towards him at the start of their encounter ( [You’re in trouble] that you got yourself into.) is indeed harsh and insensitive to a man about to die, but even more so when considering how Dean almost definitely tells himself similar things: you deserve to die because you couldn’t save John, or Layla, or the gay teacher. They all died for you, but you don’t deserve it. Bear that in mind in series three.
Bear in mind also that George and Evan are John mirrors in this episode, especially Evan, and Dean’s anger at them is also anger at John. His judgementalism and aversion to helping them perhaps says a lot about his feelings towards John. Dean’s anger is little alleviated by learning Evan traded his soul to save his wife who was dying of terminal cancer, though Jensen’s facial expressions suggest understanding and empathy for Evan’s plight. He ‘I think you [saved her] for yourself so you wouldn’t have to live without her. Well guess what? She has to live without you, now.’
Tumblr media
The episode also makes it clear that Dean would have seriously considered trading his soul for John, but I do not see any real conflict here: both of those things can exist in one person at the same time. We will just hurry past the fact the show has paralleled Dean and John with a romantic couple once again and skip to the scene with the crossroads demon.
Tumblr media
But before that, note that Sam is reactive and rather passive in this episode. The demon in 1x04 Phantom Traveler said that Jess was in Hell, and here Sam is presented with an opportunity to bring her back, but if the notion even crossed his mind, he made no mention of it whatsoever. Given the chance, I cannot say I would reject the opportunity to switch places with a friend who died almost six years ago, but Sam’s possibly-pregnant-almost-fiancé died little over a year ago and he has apparently forgotten her.
In her discussion of this episode, Paula R. Stiles called Sam predictable and Dean the opposite. Her reasoning is that Sam follows a moral code placed on him by other people, whereas Dean mostly follows his own unpredictable moral code. Sam will do what other peoples’ moral code tell s him is the right thing to do, and if he has to bend or break the code, he will justify it by referring to the moral code, e.g. doing something for the greater good. Somebody in his position would predictably reject selling his soul to bring back the dead because ‘it’s wrong’, but Dean has his own sense of right and wrong. Of course at the beginning of the show he often followed John’s orders and codes, but John himself subjected Dean to two conflicting directives: ‘kill Sam if he goes dark’, and ‘look out for Sammy’. He has to work things out for himself here and has no outward code of conduct to guide him. Consequently, one can never tell what Dean is going to do, but one can tell that Dean is unpredictable. ...Or at least he was until the writers kept making him repeat storylines, but that is a discussion for another time.
The scene with the crossroads demon is a fitting example of how Dean does not do the predictable thing. He goes to trap the crossroads demon (or so he says) to get it to call the hounds off Evan, but whether or not this is all a means to an end is left to the viewer to decide. I do not believe Dean would have callously let Evan die regardless of how much he thought he deserved it, but as angry as Dean is at John, John is still one of the people Dean has been groomed into sacrificing himself for. After Dean’s first attempt at ensnaring the demon in a devil’s trap fails, it almost instantly switches from discussing Evan to discussing John.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Demons in the Superverse are generally stupid, including Crowley who started off intelligent, but the more besotted with Dean he became the longer he spent on the show, the dumber he got until eventually he was barely distinguishable from any other demon. However, they do talk and know things as the crossroads demon itself reveals when it first appears to Dean and recognises him and his name. Whether it guessed the ‘real’ reason for Dean’s summoning it, or was gifted with especial perception, it hit very close to the mark in offering Dean ten years with John in exchange for Dean’s soul.
Tumblr media
As for the desperation to win Dean’s soul, he is one of the seals on Lucifer’s prison. ‘A righteous man shedding blood in Hell’ or something to that effect if the first in a series of events which must occur, and Lilith wants Dean to be that righteous man.
Why precisely it need be a Winchester rather than any other righteous man (remember ‘man’ used to mean exclusively ‘adult human’ or ‘human in general’, so it could have been a righteous woman or child) is a twofold issue: Lucifer and Michael need to have their apocalyptic showdown, and Dean and Sam are the vessels they need in order to have their battle. Angels have been manipulating the Winchesters’ and Campbells’ bloodlines for generations in order to bring Dean and Sam into being for their purposes. The angels know what has to happen, and are perfectly content to let the demons do what they are doing as long as it serves Michael’s purpose of bringing about Armageddon.
Perhaps the demon deals are Team Lucifer’s way of trying to find the righteous man to spill blood in Hell. This does of course swell the demons’ ranks, but the senior angels want the final battle between Heaven and Hell to apocalyptic: apocalypse means ‘the revelation’, as in the revelation of God, and they want God to come back. The more demons there are to kill, the more destruction the angels get to wreak.
The other issue is that God is writing this story to try to work through his own issues with his ‘sister’ Amara. God is driving these events, and the story is not about Dean and Sam at all, nor even Michael and Lucifer. It is about God and Amara, or Creation and Destruction, Order and Chaos, Light and Dark. Supernatural is not ‘about the brothers’, and it never was. It was therapy for a God. All Dean and Sam were was tools, ‘vessels’ for God to relive his past trauma to try to make them have a better ending. The entirety of series fifteen is the characters dealing with this truth and trying to break free of God’s control.
Tumblr media
Apropos Lucifer, only Supernatural could take such a character as the source of all evil and strip him of all presence and threat to the point where he is a mere nuisance, irritation, and vexation. When one hears that Lucifer is going to be on a television show, one’s reaction should not be Not THAT guy again!
Returning to the crossroads demon in question, it is indeed stupid and allows itself to get caught instead of being extra cautious. ‘Once bitten, twice shy’ does not apply to demons in this show: they all have to be snarky bad-asses whose barks are bigger than their bites. After Dean had almost tricked it into being trapped in the car, it should have thought twice before following him under the water tower, but whatever. It was smart of Dean to feint the demon as he did.
It is never made clear whether or not the demon was telling the truth about John’s torture. He almost definitely was tortured, but was he still being tortured when the demon spoke to Dean? Later in the show, the viewer will find out that Dean was tortured for thirty years in Hell, after which his strength broke and he became the torturer for ten years. If the four Earth months Dean was dead equated to four decades in Hell, John has been in Hell for a similar length of time at this point in the show. Sure we are told that John held out for a century of torture, whereas weak little Dean broke after thirty years. We are told that, but we are never shown any evidence that this is the truth.
Unless I am mistaken, it was Alistair who told Dean this in 4x16 On the Head of a Pin, and he did so to hurt Dean. Either John did hold out for a century (unlikely), or he picked up the torturer’s blade the same as Dean and all the demons did. In fact, the demons’ attempts to trade Dean’s soul for John’s (presumably with Lilith’s approval) suggests John might indeed have been snapped early and revealed himself to not be the righteous man. Surely a man who withstood torture in Hell for a century would seem like a righteous man indeed, at which point Lilith et al should have doubled down on their efforts to get him to snap.
Alas, this is all speculation, and the show will never give us clarity on this. Dean, however, seems to completely believe the crossroad demon’s tale that John is still being tortured. During the scene itself we can be forgiven for believing he is pretending in order to lure her into a trap, but even after having watched it several times I am unsure as to how to interpret dean’s behaviour in the scene. Maybe that was the point of Jensen’s acting choices.
The demon eventually agrees to release Evan from his contract in exchange for its own freedom, and seals the deal by noisily pressing the opening of its vessel’s gastric tract against Dean’s without his consent. ‘I like to be warned before I’m violated with demon tongue’ is Dean’s response afterwards, which induces shudders when remembering all the other times Dean has made references to being ‘violated’, or indeed shown being violated as in 1x20 Dead Man’s Blood.
But as stated above, Dean’s refusal to answer Sam’s question about whether or not Dean seriously considered the trade is all the answer I need. The ‘Dark Dean Arc’ might be over, but ‘Dark Dean’ is just getting started.

Okay show us what you mean if you are not too lazy instead of just being like no.
Yeah, that's not all of 2017 and 2018. Solid try though.
Just look at Taylor's Instagram. Or their friends. Or the article you're misquoting.
"Yet back at the start of 2016, he found himself at a complete loss for words. He had no idea how to follow the multi-platinum international success of 2013’s ‘AM’. He was rattling around his home in Los Angeles, with his model girlfriend Taylor Bagley and their dog Scooter, not watching Blade Runner."
"So he went down to the old spare room, which he would later start referring to as the ‘lunar surface’, and which now contained a Steinway Vertegrand piano that the band’s manager Ian McAndrew had given him for his 30th birthday. "
"Once Turner had corralled all these disparate ideas into ‘Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino’, he assembled the band – Helders, guitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Nick O’Malley and producer James Ford – and they decamped first to Vox Studios in Los Angeles and then to La Frette, the 19th century mansion-cum-recording studio in northern France where Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds recorded ‘Skeleton Tree’. There, the five were joined by a host of other musicians including their touring keyboard player, Tom Rowley, Tame Impala’s Cameron Avery, Klaxons’ James Righton, Mini Mansions’ Zach Dawes and Tyler Parkford, and drummer Loren Humphrey. They all played together in the same room, inspired by the lush recording sessions for the Beach Boys’ ‘Pet Sounds’ and the idea of Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’, as heard on Dion’s ‘Born to Be With You’ and Leonard Cohen’s ‘Death of a Ladies’ Man’, some of Turner’s favourite records. “You see those images from those recording sessions and it just looks so exciting,” says Turner. “Primarily I think I love those albums and I wanted my album to be a bit like them.”
"Yet when it came to the vocals, they found that it was the lines Turner recorded on his vintage 8-track Tascam 388 in splendid isolation at home that needed to be retained for the record, impossible to better wherever else they tried them." - AT HOME, where his girlfriend also lived

On the 30th April 2022, Dad and I watched Blue Sky Studios Ice Age.
This year, Ice Age was released 20 years ago back in 2002.
It is followed by:
Ice Age 2 The Meltdown (2006)
Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
Ice Age 4 Continental Drift (2012)
Ice Age 5 Collision Course (2016).
The following weekends, we watched  Ice Age 2 The Meltdown and Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

In April 2021, Blue Sky Studios was shut down by its parent company Disney, who acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019.
The reason for the closure was due to the economic impact of the pandemic on the Walt Disney Company.
Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987.

Folks, Nimona is getting a single film. Just a film. Not a show. Not a series. A film. A movie. And only one of them. It'd be cool if it was getting more than that, but it's not. It has a runtime of just under 2 hours.
The Netflix YouTube teaser page even says this in the summary: from the Netflix Film "Nimona"
In the article Netflix released the day of the teaser, they have these:
"In the animated film that shares her name, the young changeling"
"share a first teaser trailer for our film"
"even more so in the movie now"
"[Nimona] reached out from the movie"
"You can catch up with Nimona when the movie hits Netflix on June 30."
In the extra footage reel on the New on Netflix video, there's a box of text on the top left corner of the Nimona footage that says "N [for Netflix] Film Nimona June 30".
Tumblr media
For all the other general confusion I'm seeing around, I made a Tumblr post summarizing most of the stuff with the film and its history. Shorter summary of some common confusion I'm seeing:
Nimona is a webcomic (2012-2014) by Nate Diana Stevenson/ND Stevenson (he/him) that was published as a single graphic novel in 2015. While the comic was ongoing, Nate co-wrote Lumberjanes. The Nimona adaptation rights were purchased by Fox in 2015, and it was in production to become a film under Blue Sky Studios, using the Paperman (2012) art style (one of the directors, Patrick Osbourne, was animation supervisor for Paperman, and directed Feast the short film (2015), which used the same style). Disney purchased 20th Century Animation in 2019 (including Blue Sky), and work was ongoing. Disney shuttered Blue Sky and cancelled the still in production film in February 2021. The crew went searching for a new home for the film and it was picked up by Annapurna as producer, DNEG as the animation studio (using Blue Sky materials), and Netflix as distributor (they just seem to be handling distribution and marketing, not actually working on the film), which they officially announced in April 2022, for a planned 2023 release. The film also seems to have been completed sometime around February 2023. The PG-rated film premiered at the Annecy Animation International Film Festival on June 14th, 2023, and will release in select theaters on June 23rd, and be on Netflix for streaming on June 30th, 2023. There have been preview events for crew, press, and certain small organizations going back to February 2023, and at least a few people have gotten advance review copies.
Nate was also the showrunner for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (November 13, 2018-May 15, 2020), the reboot of She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985). Again, Nimona's adaptation rights were bought by Fox in 2015, and it was being made by Blue Sky Studios. She-Ra (2018) began production in April 2016 under DreamWorks Animation and Mattel (owner of the IP), and was distributed by Netflix. 20th Century [Fox] Animation was bought by Disney in 2019. She-Ra (2018) concluded in May 2020. Nimona was cancelled by Disney in February 2021. Nimona was officially revived in April 2022, under Annapurna Animation (production), to be made/completed by DNEG (animation) and distributed by Netflix. Netflix wasn't involved on Nimona until after it was in production for around six years, around a year, minimum, after She-Ra (their last project with Nate) ended. Every other company is different and it'd be weird for them to say "you only get this if this is successful" when that makes zero sense on timing.
Lumberjanes is being adapted into an animated series on HBO Max, with Nate as executive producer. We haven't really heard anything more about it since 2020.
You can still buy and read the Nimona graphic novel in physical and ebook form, as well as the full-cast English audiobook (also available in the link). The graphic novel has been translated into 16 languages! The only thing that changed for publication was that Nate redid some of the very early pages to improve the art/panelling and make it more in line with later pages and acceptable for physical publication. That's all!

Paris the city of love
Tumblr media
Paris is the capital and most populous city of France. With an official estimated population of 2,102,650 residents as of 1 January 2023[2] in an area of more than 105 km2 (41 sq mi),[5] Paris is the fifth-most populated city in the European Union and the 30th most densely populated city in the world in 2022.[6] Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of the world's major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, culture, fashion, gastronomy and many areas. For its leading role in the arts and sciences, as well as its early and extensive system of street lighting, in the 19th century, it became known as the City of Light.

French culture is most commonly associated with Paris, which is a center of fashion, cuisine, art and architecture, but life outside of the City of Lights is very different and varies by region.
France doesn't just have culture; the word "culture" is actually French. "'Culture' derives from the same French term, which in turn derives from the Latin 'colere,' meaning to tend to the earth and grow, cultivate and nurture," Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London, told Live Science.
Historically, French culture was influenced by Celtic and Gallo-Roman cultures as well as the Franks, a Germanic tribe. France was initially defined as the western area of Germany known as Rhineland but it later came to refer to a territory that was known as Gaul during the Iron Age and Ancient Roman era.

The rental expenses in Paris
Here’s an indication of the average monthly rent in Paris based on our rental index 2022.
Furnished Private Room with utilities (best for students): €789.
Furnished Studio with utilities (best for singles, couples, or new graduates): €1,101.
Unfurnished Apartment with utilities (best for couples or families): €1,978.
These prices are just the average rental prices across Paris. Depending on which neighborhood you live in, prices will vary. If you choose to live outside of the center, you can find more affordable places.
With high rental prices and a dense population within the city, the accommodation hunt in Paris is quite competitive. So the best advice we can give you would be to start your housing search as early as possible.
But be cautious of rental scams! The competitive accommodation hunt makes the real estate sector vulnerable to fraudsters. To avoid rental scams, use a trusted service, such as HousingAnywhere and StudaPart.
For a hassle-free move in, you can easily find furnished apartments for rent in Paris.
Cost of groceries in Paris
The cost of groceries will vary depending on your eating habits, diet and which store you’re shopping from. The good news is that Paris has many options for you to shop from, depending on your budget. You can shop at some discount stores, such as Franprix, Aldi, or Lidl, supermarket chains, such as Carrefour or Intermarché, or niche stores for organic produce at Biocoop or NaturéO. Depending on where you shop from, expect to pay €200 to €300 for your monthly food expenses.

Expats: Health insurance in France depends on residency, not employment status. So if you’ve a permanent residence (you’ll live in France for at least for 6 months), you’ve to get French health insurance within 3 months of your arrival. The French health insurance will cover about 70% of the doctor's costs and 80% of the hospital costs.
In France, the average cost of health
insurance for one person is €40 per month. Of course, prices vary depending on the policy. Generally, basic coverage will cover basic dentistry costs too. But complex procedures will be on you.
International students: International students from the EU/EEA region can simply use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if they’re temporarily in France. For more extended stays, all students (both non-EU and EU) must register with Student’s Social Security (Sécurité Sociale Etudiante). You’ll pay €38 per month for a complete package as a student. There’re also cheaper plans for those who make less frequent visits to the doctor and medical check-ups.
Cost of leisure activities
One of the many perks of living in Paris is benefiting from a wide selection of entertainment and leisure activities.
Whether you want to treat yourself by eating out or seeing a new movie, it’s always best to budget well so you won’t empty your bank account.

Paris Do’s and Don’ts: 9 Unwritten Rules That Every Parisian Knows To make navigating the dizzying whirlwind of Paris simple and stress-free, brush up on these essential etiquette do’s and don'ts before your next trip.
Do say “bonjour”
Greetings go a long way. The most important word any Paris traveler needs is “bonjour,” Emily counsels. No matter which other French words you know, this one is tantamount. “Any interaction with anyone—be it your bus driver, your waiter, or a shopkeeper—should always begin with ‘bonjour.’ ‘Bonjour’ doesn't just mean hello: it primes the other person for a conversation or a request. You should say ‘bonjour,’ wait for the other person to say ‘bonjour’ back, and then proceed with your request. (If you don’t speak French, the next words out of your mouth will likely be ‘Parlez-vous anglais?’ ‘Do you speak English?’).”
Don’t eat on the go
Paris is not a place in a rush. If you’re visiting Paris from a country that prizes efficient desk meals over 3-course lunches, slow your roll—time works a little differently in Paris, especially around mealtimes. Eating on public transportation is particularly frowned upon (“I once saw some backpackers make Camembert sandwiches on the Paris Métro, and you could feel the judgment in the air,” Emily says), but even munching a sandwich as you stroll is a faux pas.
Do keep your voice down
Indoor voice? Maybe make it your outdoor voice too. “Fellow Americans: keep your voice down; we tend to yell,” says Emily. Sure, it’s a bit of tough love, but it helps to practice your inside voice before you hop on that flight overseas. In Paris, speaking loudly in restaurants, on trains, and in other public spaces isn’t just seen as rude—as a visitor, it’s also the fastest way to stick out like a sore thumb. Instead, think of turning down the volume a notch or two as a sign of respect for those around you. “I would say keep your voice down on public transport, and try not to take phone calls,” Emily adds.
Don't forget to ask for the check
Parisians are unlikely to hurry you out of the door. In the United States, many servers drop the check on your table before you’re even done with dessert. Not so in Paris, where that kind of hustle and bustle would amount to a culinary capital offense. Lingering with loved ones over leisurely, multi-course meals is pretty much a national sport here, and most waiters don’t want to disturb your flow.
Do serve others around you first
Common courtesy is key. Speaking of leisurely meals with loved ones—be sure to keep those loved ones in mind as you sip and pour at the dinner table. “Always serve other people water or wine at the table before serving yourself,” Emily counsels. It’s a small piece of dining etiquette, but a detail that is sure to win your companions’ approval. The same rule also applies if you find yourself enjoying an apéro or meal at a local’s home. “Don’t help yourself to more drinks at someone’s house; wait to be served,” Emily says.
Don't overdress
Trying too hard is very passé. Paris is an unabashedly fashionable city famed for its well-heeled residents; no wonder visitors fret about the best way to “dress Parisian” before a big trip. For starters: there’s no pressure or obligation to overhaul your wardrobe before your getaway. That said, if you want a look that fits in with the city’s vibe, think simple—staple pieces, minimalist accessories, artfully tousled hair, maybe a quick swipe of red lipstick. If you’ve reached Emily in Paris levels of color and maximalism, you’ve gone several steps too far, despite what Netflix would have you think.
Do explore beyond the left bank
There’s much more of Paris to enjoy. Paris’ Left Bank lives large in the imaginations of visitors, all Café de Flore and Boulevard Saint-Germain; Jardin du Luxembourg and Quartier Latin; Shakespeare & Company and Sorbonne. And while no Paris trip is complete without exploring the area’s highlights, you’d be remiss not to spend time getting to know the locals-frequented neighborhoods of the Right Bank, from the boutique-and-gallery-filled streets of the Marais to the street-art-bedecked Belleville and the too-cool-for-school Canal Saint-Martin area.
Don't plan on a big Sunday shopping trip
There’ll be little to nothing open. Whether you’re looking to stock up your Airbnb with groceries or browse Paris’ charming boutiques, it’s best to avoid planning that big shopping trip for Sunday. As a holdover from longstanding social custom, many shops are open for only a brief window of time on Sunday, or even shuttered entirely. And while recent modernization has seen some changes to the Sunday shopping laws, don’t expect that you’ll be able to access all the amenities and offerings you normally would (nor certain restaurants, museums, and other venues).

The annual average temperature is in the lower 50s F (roughly 12 °C); the July average is in the upper 60s F (about 19 °C), and the January average is in the upper 30s F (about 3 °C). The temperature drops below freezing for about a month each year, and snow falls on approximately half of those days. The city has taken measures to decrease air pollution, and a system of water purification has made tap water safe for drinking.

(this is the only my not oc its a ficitional character from fox kids bumpers lost media  "frankenfox"  i write )
Fox Kids Network "Frankenfox" Bumpers (1991-1992) (Almost Complete Compilation) - YouTube
He was a short-lived mascot for the block. Due to his Frankenstein-monster-like mismatched media body parts, he was nicknamed "Frankenfox". He was believed to be voiced by either Richard Steven Horvitz or James Arnold Taylor because of his silly high-pitched voice, but this fact has not yet been confirmed.
When one fan asked Mike Kazaleh (one of the animators) about the bumpers, he replied with this statement:What I remember was that these were produced by the now-defunct Colossal Pictures, a bay area studio that was very trendy at the time. The technical nightmare was combining a live-action body with an animated head. The man in the body costume (who had a green cylinder covering his head to facilitate the use of the "ultimate" compositing machine) was taped moving around more or less randomly. This required re-exposing individual frames from the tape as if they were drawings. That was the only way we could get any "body sync" for the dialogue and action. That was very time-consuming. After that was finished, we could go about the business of animating the head. why? because that's whole year back in the early 90's  "1991-1992" i born and raise there normally , i not , im born in march 1994 with my twin brother in california :v
anyways He also responded when asked about the character's name and who voiced him: I don't think the character had a name. The Fox network (and Fox Kids),  was still pretty new at the time. I forgot who actually decided to use a fox mascot, but it seems like an obvious idea. I've forgotten the actor's name. I think the voice was sped up at least 8%, so that makes it even harder to remember. Also, this was almost a quarter of a century ago. Mike Smith was a very pleasant chap and was a good cartoonist, but I think his idea of combining a live body with a cartoon head turned out to require more effort that Colossal bargained for. unfortunately to according to this un-named in the name called "frankenfox" but the un-voice doesn't  sound like Richard Steven Horvitz , James Arnold Taylor or charlie adler at all.  well to honest to support to frankenfox for myself , i'm surprised to i feel have strangest dream , can you people why am i a fan of frankenfox? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biography (with back story): Frankenfox aka Frank for short is a wacky, crazy, and funny old fox mascot genius from Fox Kids of the year of 1991 as a lost media which ended in 1992 when he's discontinued and retired after playing his goofy thing in plenty of his routines from 30 years. In the opinion of his backstory on how he became a monstrosity frankenfox monster and yet, to the future became a to tranform into a wackyest vampire a new count himself, king of vampire frankenfoxes hybrids from Foxsylvania been already married to one of the 12 daughters of Varon's "vanna".
begining in 1968 to 1977: here is the theory on how he become like it, frankenfox was the original, ordinary and actual fox in four legs in the in the forest, but is was the baby fox in the country when he's with his 4 siblings, they are looking for rations to survive like food to eat and water to drink from around the forest until he fall behind from the others, he founds a pray which is a quail bird by catching it. After his hunting meal is done, he goes back to his pack, but it turns out that he was lost, so he has to find his way to find them.
then caught the chipmunk, chews on the dead little critter and spits the skeleton out. The fox who is actually his mother, patting on the baby fox's head and wags its tail. The mother fox saw the herd of foxes continues to migrate to another habitat, she goes over there but she forgot to call her son as the baby fox was still on the hunt, no small critter for him to eat until he saw a butterfly flying by, he tries to catch it as his last meal, but the butterfly is too quick for him as he about to chase him down , but until he found a road. Once he about to cross the road to another side of the forest to go back to his pack, the truck is driving towards him as he got hit by a truck, leaving him a tire track and died. Days are moving forward without his pack while he's dead alone by day to night as it starting to storm with dark clouds, an unknown figure in the hood came out of the shadow and reveal himself to be Dr. Stitchly, he saw a dead fox on the road, grabs him by his tail and puts it in the bag as he takes him to his castle. He set the fox on his experimental bed as his surgeon are ready to be taken apart into new and improve.
end to 60's to moving on to 70's , frank is 9 to off from school before summer, then to moxy moto age 6 and he fixing the bike,  then frank and moxy go and had to the treehouse to be about thier own talented things to the first future to begin in the 90's what he and moxy will growning up? to be in and been added to fox kids and cartoon network on tv.
and suddenly according to the news who about people is hate violence before stitchly is worryed be frank, is was the adult man is absolutely a psychopath wondering around in the neighborhood named "Norman Bates"
FrankenFox and Moxy had built themselves a fort out of blanket and pillows in the living room and then frank told moxy he have a plan before the police is on the way for get rid of the criminal and get arrested, is one hour frank and moxy say goodbye to each other before moxy's parents coming home in 5 minutes, stitchly set frank and moving to new castle start tomorrow and never see the friendship of the first time again.
in 1982 to 1989: stitchly and foxietta who finally from grave and then they got married because he is a teenager who finally have his mom back for christmas.
moving in 1986 after frankenfox is having a baby brother "thrillfox" but now he 17 year old, its seems is get worse Dr. Stitchly is in the middle of the downtown alley as he is holding some grocery bags that he bought from the grocery store and then the evil  banshee witch of hell named sintress who flirt to stitchly.
then what happened? frank who hear about parents who almost fighting and argue very harsh and his brother thrillie is crying and cheer him up for give him a stuff fox "fee-fee" and foxietta and stitchly got divorced and she left the stitchly's castle.
three years ago to begin to 1990 and end of the 80's at this summer frank is 18 , he graduated from high school, he and thrillie to bring of the foxietta's kids his two borthers and one sister into the freaky experiment to be a fox family and they named them metallifox , foxanne and foxtrot aka "theodore" and together team for stitchly, frank and the others are the goofy Fox 5 and frank is finally completed the first routine to begin with this bumper.
and the upcoming network of Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox had launched a new network called Fox Kids network since 1990 as they have hired FrankenFox in 1991, as the first Fox Kids mascot. The screen flashes with the thundering lightning, the castle shows as it cuts the inside, appearing to be FrankenFox's silhouette, prancing downstairs as he is making the evil laugh while the thunder cackles in the background. Now, FrankenFox appears himself who is very large as he becomes a complete, full-grown adult man to begin as a perfect person while being a mascot of his own network, only just the bumpers.
The scene take place when he has something in his throat as he had his tongue out, reveals to be a world's tiniest fat guy as an anchorman by reading the news in high-pitched voice until Frank closes his mouth and swallows it as he begins to choke by coughing.
in 1991 to 1992: now after they off to the trail the airport and going to new york from Foxsylvania in 8 hours and 4 am in the morning later , first he got hired last week , but this week to begining arrviving the bumpers when his brain been founded by thrillie who escaping and all set and role it to begin to frank is a star on fox kids network for the year.  After an hours later of his experiment, it's complete while the fox has a body like a human by wearing a wacky-like yellow suit with colorful polka dots on it, Dr. Stitchly calls him "FrankenFox" before he flips the switch to bring him to life with thundering electric. Before he moves, Stitchly will give him a test subject first by putting a black lipstick on and kiss him. After the cleanup on him, he had finally come back alive with some new looks while Stitchly calls him his son after being called FrankenFox but mostly Frank as he begins to speak and learned something smart around the castle with his father who is a doctor.
now last night at the end he singing for lost his heart about his mom and thrillie is always here with him in with his side, and need a one beautiful girl, a partner of his own later on.
A year, or a month, or a days later due to his entertaining show biz, he had invited by Fox for Fox Kids network as a mascot in 1992 but as a bumper instead of a show but fair enough for Frank which he accepts it. He had it all for doing something crazy, wacky and cartoony stuff to entertain kids in the bumpers by head switching with a dog, being a beatnik, commerical himself as a cowboy chili and more funny activities that he ever did until he's been discontinued in 1992 when there is a new mascot named Fox-Fox for next year as he understand for settle himself a retirement. He did have a blast entertaining himself with his father, Stitchly for doing some goofy thing in plenty of his routines by going back to his castle until he meet the most beautiful vampire and frankenstein mix such as Vanna von Valenstein thanks to Dr. Stitchly for creating her and bring her back to life as his love interest for valentine's day  until he brings back the others like ThrillFox, Foxanne, MetalliFox, and FoxTrot a.k.a Theodore as they are one big happy but scary family for Frankenfox.
in 1993 to 1994: frankenfox is done and already end of fox kids network gone missing when vanna been catchered by gatorfox to finally married her , he start to his adventure ft thrillie to get theodore out the ruins with metal and foxanne , to escape from the jungle island ann saved vanna.
until now when moxy is hired on december and fox fox are now a new mascot of fox kids network next month, frank and vanna had to the honeymoon before until this fall , this night a son of sinstress "count draculfox".
to begin to rise to let frankenfox been bited by draculfox before in two weeks later before in this new year eve his eyes turning red and tranform into a Vampire with his mind with Dangerous Game. and he want vanna to be true, its because talking about her ancestors in her chilldhood and her life back in the 20's and start singing and being  curious and fear and to laid down to the bed and make up with kissing.
to end of of the night to draculfox's death  after moxy and fox fox defeat the sinstress for frank, frank is listening to dracula's real life ever since draculfox who was raised by her who married to his dead long lost father "count draculfox senior" and he was baby when sinstress singing lullaby and then he grown up to to a king like his father. then end of draculfox's story the sun came out frank is open the curtain, draculfox is burned down into borns and then ashes for returning to his draculfox's  father's owner and being replaced by frankenfox's future.
in 2022: many years of past all three mascots from 90's all got retired from the bumpers from fox kids and cartoon network and is been a long time after before someone all grown up from the in march 1994,  frankenfox , his wife vanna and the gang but moxy and fox fox are memberships for years, frank who meet a 28 year old young lady is  turn into a WereFox "Kyah" to try to set her out and free her to escape from prison from the dungeon then find his family and his besties moxy and fox fox.
in 2023: after vanna saving frankenfox and frankenfox to try to setting out and free kyah again thanks to his father "dr.stitchly" who trangender and his counselor "Maestrote", everyone are escaping from prison from another dungeon from hell to freedom even moxy and fox fox and now summer is over frank save vanna's life again for called the police and the security from fox kids to get kyah's ememies arrested goes to jail and overall kyah is not going there to trust everyone , she was move on to deal with frank , moxy and fox fox to begin frank's sidekick who older than foxanne and thrillie.
