30 DAY NANCY DREW CHALLENGE DAY1 FIRST GAME EVER PLAYED

That would be both MHM and CUR for me. I first saw Curse of Blackmoor Manor when I was at my friend's and I saw her playing this game. I was like 7 or 8. Then I got super inspired and asked the shit of my parents to buy me this game. Unfortunately when we came to store there wasn't a copy of Blackmoor one, so I chose MHM.

And this makes it the first game I ever played. It was translated as "Hauntings in a Hotel" where I lived

BOY.

BOY WAS I SCARRED FOR LIFE.

I FINISHED SAW MIGHT I ADD WHEN I WAS 11 AND WHILE IT SCARED ME, IT WASN'T THIS DEEP SURREAL TERROR I EXPERIENCED WITH MHM

I love this game deeply, I love the location, I love the vibe, THE MUSIC OH OOOOOH THE MUSIC! I believe I became the composer partially bc of this game

FIRST we got a piano cycling back and forth, a circular tone of this motive resembles clock ticking and overall monotone experience. You can remember that there is actually a ticking clock in location where it played so it makes sence.

But my FAVOURITE part is the second half! 8:26 - Where we got this HEAAAVY GLOOMY cello (maybe contrabass even??) and these tiny icky violin plucks. When I listen to this I imagine a huuuuge shadow casting over a person (cello/contrabass) and the person themselve quitely tippy-toeing down the stairs (violin).

Kinda like that!

The jumpscares scare me to this day and the atmo is so DUSTY and OLD I think you can FEEL IT.

This hotel also resembles like typical local place to live, and hotel attire looked SO CLOSE to wherever I lived be it at home or at my grandma's

Same mood, isn't it?

Post-soviet design is all about floral natural retro almost victorian mood so NO WONDER THIS PLACE MADE ME SO UNEASY

This game is not perfect, I must admit

But it will forever take a huge place in my heart

And my nightmares

I crossed paths with Taylor Lautner once when he was doing a mall tour type schtick in Manila back when I was 16. It was in a mall I frequented and I remember walking around and seeing this group of teenage girls (and some in their mid-30s) giggling and following this person, and I was on a slightly elevated platform so I could kind of see who was at the center, and at that same moment he was looking up and out of the crowd and for like a split second we made eye contact and he just waved in my direction like we were old friends. And in return, my cracked self waved back. To this day I still think back to that day and wonder what exactly happened. The running theory is that we were friends in our past lives and our souls recognized each other 🤪🤣

I'm writing for a game! For the last few years I've been on the writing team for the story on this fan game that centers around the story of Markiplier's interactive content. A related random fact is that I have a more or less abandoned side blog that contain my theories on the underlying lore behind these pieces of content and if you can find it, say hi.

Most of my physical TBR consists of books that I collected in my youth that I never got around to reading. So if you see Nancy Drew or some other children's books on my Reading Challenge over in StoryGraph or Goodreads, that's the context. Pretty sure there's about 50+ books that I still have to finish and donate to make room for new stuff.

my controversial Jerma985 take is that it’s the first day of school. i wake up at 7 AM but the FACT is I can never get off of my mattress. The first thing I do is watch Jerma’s ice challenge video, then I work on my splatoon au fanart of Jerma and Vinny Vince Sauce. When I get up, I salute to the boston mets flag hung on my wall. I sing, “I'm the giant rat who makes all of da rules, lets see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into.” Then I rush downstairs and pour myself a bowl of straight Adderall doused in sprite. After breakfast I start to get ready for school. I put on my green mexican tshirt. Then I put on my cat ear headband and bright pink belled collar. I catch the bus just in time and put on eminem on my phone, humming “Knees weak moms spaghetti” The bus drops me off and when I enter the school doors, someone comes up to me and says “nice cat ears, JERMA STAN” and throws a cup of coffee at me, staining my clothes. “U-uh yeah nice once chat” I mutter under my breath, and I pull out my custom scout baseball bat that i bought for $53 on Redbubble. They tremble before me begging me not to hurt them. i let them off with a warning and let them know that i have the power of Jerma985 and Oneyplays by my side. During my morning classes I can barely keep my eyes open, the only thing preventing me from falling asleep is me secretly watching the current Spore charity stream from my phone under my desk. For lunch I order boneless chicken wings and manage to pick it up from the local Burgerking before the bell rings. I wolf the whole meal down while i run to class hoping I won’t be late. I apologize to the teacher, Mr. Jeremy, but he says it’s okay because it’s still just the first day of school. For todays class he teaches how to do a .08 sec boat clutch from the sea of thieves playthrough. I try to pay attention but I can’t stop doodling the Fallout new vegas crew in my notebook. After school is finally over, I go home and enter Jerma’s discord vc where everyone is calling out for Scatmans world. I spend an hour doing homework while simultaneously switching tabs between Discord, Twitter, and the archive of the ballfondler stream, and watching Jerma tiktok fancams in the background. At 5:30 i boot up TF2 and enter the server ip for uncle danes second lobby. A Jerma985 hater hacks the server and starts saying “all of Jerma nation is going to superhell” Then Vinny and Lazypurple walk on stage holding the lgbt ally flag and then destroys the hacker with a single beam of light. everyone starts clapping and cheering. Then, a single message pops up on the screen: “Jerma has joined the game.” Jerma walks onto stage to reveal a button sealed under a trap door. He says, “it was never meant to be” and the entire server explodes and becomes engulfed in flames. The server shuts down. Uncle danetopia is over. Afterwards, I participate in #TF2UDAselfiday and immediately get 1.2k retweets and 64k likes. Then I read the entirety of Nancy Drew mystery of the lighthouse while listening to Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls and cry. Finally, I go to bed with my Red Sox tee shirt on listening to Happy Birthday once again (slowed and reverb). As i hear Jerma sing “Micheal, such a good boy this year, open up your gifts while we all cheer” i slowly drift into sleep, ready for a full night’s rest.

There’s actually quite a few scary games in the series, but SAW kind of takes the cake. It’s probably because I’d binged all of the Grudge, Ju-on, the Ring and Ringu movies about a year or two before this came out (they’re addicting and terrifying).

Maybe it’s because I’m currently located in Japan, but I really love Shadow at the Water’s Edge’s atmosphere at the Ryokan. It feels so calming and relaxing. This was a hard choice though! The museum in Scarlet Hand and the entirety of Thornton Hall came a close tie for second.

DAY 1 | First Game Played | The Final Scene

Wow it is so crazy to think back to 2003 (???) when my parents gave me this game for my birthday. I was only 8 years old and loved playing games on the computer, so this was. great gift. While it certainly changed my life, I was more than confused playing this game. I had no idea what to do and it took me at least two weeks to find where Joseph was (had no idea you could go in between that space between the two balconies. Who would have thought?) I also remember that I thought Maya was below the trap door behind the stage with the box on it, since I thought the grunting noises of trying to pick up the door were not Maya but from Nancy. (Whoops).

Even though I was completely lost, fell off that balcony maybe 20 times, kept pestering Simone in the hope she would talk to me, never finished the game my first time through, I eventually collected all the games, played every single one to completion and had my life change for the best, so much so making a fan Tumblr account with the Clue Crew. 

I love this community a lot and I am really happy that I get to be a part of it from Bucket Day 2020 to game reviews and meme-ing the hell out of all the games, it’s been a crazy and super fun ride.

Day 1:

The first game I ever played was Message in a Haunted Mansion! My mom bought it for me as a surprise right when it came out. I was 9 and it led to my affinity for all things Nancy Drew. My grandma started a tradition of buying them for me every Christmas and then we would spend all Christmas Day and night playing. Those are some of the best memories. So thank you to my family for giving me the gift I still carry with me 20 years later ❤️

Missed yesterday again lol.

Game for a rainy day:

The normal answer but CRY. Everytime it rains I wanna open the game and get that “warning: best to play with the lights off” start. Ofndnsndmdndndndnfdnsnfbfb. Best feeling in the world. I’ve also seen people mention TOT which is also true, but more for like daytime medium sprinkles. I also like MHM simply because it storms at the start of the game and i just love that feeling.

Also bonus: for snow, always ICE, SEA, and for sure TRT.

Favorite Location: Ooft. All of them? Lol. I have an attachment to Iceland in SEA, the train in TRN and the ranch in SHA. Deception island is also wonderful, I would love to live there. Honestly every game has such wonderful atmosphere I love it. Okay but VEN and DAN are also good too😭😭😭 this is very difficult😪

day one: first game played

my first game was message in a haunted mansion. it would have been about 5th grade, my friend had just gotten MHM and FIN together and he said he got stuck during the fire in the lounge and couldn’t figure out how to make it any further, so he let me borrow MHM and said he was going to try FIN instead.

I remember LOVING all of the ghost scares and helping with the renovations around the house. the first time a secret passage opened up it blew my tiny little mind. it took me forever to gather all of those chinese symbols around the house hahaha.

we’re still friends, by the way! he’s my oldest friend and we still talk about nancy drew games all the time, I send him memes from tumblr and we have a good laugh.

GOSH it's been a WHILE holy SHIT!

Okay so it's quite a tough choice. Music is perfect in every single game, but HOLY SHIT is it AMAZING in FIN!!!

Every single track sets the mood, it sets the scene (oooh yes) and BOY the amount of REFERENCES and foreshadowing!

Like in almost every single track there is subtle clock ticking at the back of the track, as if hinting that no much time is left.

And "Danger 2" that plays at the final scene of the game (badum-tssss) HAS THIS SUSPENSE not only because of clock ticking, but also because of IT HAS THIS LEITMOTIF OF MAYA'S THEME WHICH IS BASICALLY GAME'S THEME?

30 Day Nancy Drew Challenge - Day 26: Favourite Character Arc

I’ve said this before, but I’m really big on characterization. It can make or break a game for me. It’s literally the only reason that Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake is lower on my list - sure, the gameplay is pretty fun, but I dread talking to all the characters, including the phone characters. I think my favourite character is my favourite partially because of their character arc, but I have no shortage of good ones to choose from for this prompt, and the one I’ve decided to go with is for reasons that constitute a bit of a spoiler about the culprit in The Ghost of Thornton Hall, so if you haven’t played it yet don’t click on the read more. My favourite Nancy Drew character arc is...

Jessalyn Thornton! We spend most of the game looking for her and learning minimal details about her through the opinions of others and the clues she’s left behind, but when we finally find her, and she tells us the truth about Harper and Clara, everything starts to come together. I also think it’s kind of a cool twist that this “damsel in distress” was the one who put herself into hiding to get away from the real danger. She’s probably one of the strongest people in this whole hard-headed family, but she has no real authority. Being forced into an arranged marriage type deal with her best friend who she knows is in love with someone else is so tragic, but she pushes through. She can’t really bring Charlotte justice, but I think she’s a really big person to be able to look at the situation objectively, and hold her mom somewhat accountable for what she did and continues to do.

Game with Best Characters: The Captive Curse

This is one of the funnier games in the series, and I think every single character is well-developed, funny, and appropriately deep at times. This is one game that, when I replay, I don’t ignore the dialogue. Also, they’re all well-rendered and well-voiced.
