Chort devils enforce bargains that mortals try to escape, and destroy reputations of zealous foes. They make bargains themselves as well, offering power and rewards to the desperate, but other devils who have been foiled in their pacts will approach a chort to ensure that those who try to escape the consequences of their deal are dealt with. Often, a chort will do so simply by teleporting into the bargainer's home and make public proclamations of their bargain, reading the full deal and focusing on embarrassing details. Rivals ruined, love ensnared, political power gained, costs paid. Even if they escaped their payment, their reputation and image will be destroyed, as everyone knows what they've done.

Alternatively, those resistant to being manipulated into a pact may find their reputation shredded by a chort's investigations. Damaging stories from their past come to light, real or false, rivals find sudden fortune to rise up, or most damning, crimes are pinned on them. A favorite of chort is to steal a paladin's weapon and use it to murder an innocent or pious person, leaving the weapon to be found. Even if the paladin is not officially accused, the act sours the paladin's reputation, taints a virtuous weapon, and creates discord among the chort's foes.

Why is the number of killers so inconsistent whenever someone bleeds on the bones, and what’s the “typical” number?

There have been several questions floating around the FS fandom pertaining to the lore, like who took the book at the end of ‘94? Before 1666 came out, a big one was why Ziggy wasn’t possessed while Sam was. But this particular one has bugged me for a while, and I think I’ve got an answer.

Before we get into the theory part of this post, I want to take some time to assess the canonical information we have.

The first time we see someone bleed on the bones, it’s Sam. The dates in 1994 are a little iffy, but at the end of the first movie, while Nick is recording the kids’ statements, he says the date is October 4th. Since it’s the morning of October 4th and the kids were being attacked the previous night, I’m going to assume that Sam bled on the bones on October 2nd.

So she bleeds on the bones on October 2nd, and then the next night, she and Deena are attacked in the hospital by Ryan. Ruby attacks Simon a short while later, and then Tommy follows, also not too long after the previous attacks. While I’m not entirely sure why the killers didn’t go after Sam on the 2nd and waited until the 3rd, the actual “hunt” started the next night and ended some hours later, with three killers coming after her, all of them being the last three sacrifices.

Next to bleed on the bones (in movie order) is Ziggy. This happens on the night of July 19th, and, if the movie’s timing is mostly accurate, which I’m inclined to think so considering how there wasn’t any side action and it all happened in one place, she died around ten minutes later, give or take. During that ten minutes, we see four killers, also the last four sacrifices. I’ll get to why that’s weird in a minute.

The last person we see bleeding on the bones is Deena. She either bleeds on the bones very late on October 4th or very early on October 5th, considering it’s daylight when she and Sam walk out of Nick’s house. Deena is a special case, considering she reconnected Sarah’s hand and learned the whole story. This is very important to my theory, and I will explain in a bit.

Deena is a target for at least an hour (we don’t have the best look at how long it took), but we see six killers after her. I know Sam was also possessed at the time and most likely went after Deena specifically because she bled on the bones, but I’m not counting her since she’s not undead. All of the undead killers were the last six sacrifices.

None of these numbers are consistent, and with the number of killers after Ziggy compared to Sam, it’s definitely not time-sensitive. The only thing that is consistent is that all of the killers are the last _ sacrifices that had been named. No skipping around, no picking and choosing, always chronological (kind of).

So what’s the typical number of killers resurrected after someone bleeds on the bones?

I think that the typical number of killers is three. Specifically, the last three sacrifices.

Sam was being chased for several hours. During those few hours, we only see three killers - Ryan, Tommy, and Ruby. 1994, 1978, and 1965. Why three, I’m not entirely sure, but I think three undead murderers would be enough to quickly kill a person, and I think Satan does, too.

But what about Ziggy?

In Ziggy’s case, Tommy had died very, very recently. Like, his body wasn’t even cold. His corpse was just lying there in the mess hall with Ziggy, Cindy, and Alice. I think that, since it was so recent, the Devil ended up resurrecting him as well as the other three, either for convenience’s sake or out of habit. Still, they all go in chronological order - 1978, 1965, 1953/50 (Leigh give us one date for Harry’s initial possession please), 1922.

And Deena?

With Deena, she reconnected Sarah’s hand. Instead of just the images Sarah showed to Sam and Ziggy, she relived the whole thing. To put it simply, it is likely the Devil went into “oh fuck” mode and deployed a lot more killers than usual - double the usual, actually - to get rid of her quicker and save the pact. Why they took so long to come after her when they were coming from the mall baffles me, but that is not what this theory is about.

So there you have it! This has been sitting in my drafts for a while, and I was finally able to fully articulate my thoughts, which took a surprisingly long amount of time to do. I hope this theory was at least semi-coherent and made some sense, and I hope you enjoyed it.

A detailed investigation comprised of nearly 13,000 respondents and over 70 in-depth interviews with industry leaders has uncovered that motorsport is one of the lowest-performing sports for gender equality, only behind American football, with an average participation across all categories of just 10% for female drivers.

The report has been made available for download at More Than Equal’s website.

Women struggle to progress to the higher echelons of motorsport partly because of problems raising funding based on prejudice. The study says: "The cost of competing is a universal challenge to both men and women, but too few investors and sponsors are willing to take a chance on female drivers early in their careers, preventing their progress at crucial periods."

More Than Equal, an organisation co-founded by ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard with the goal of finding and developing a female F1 champion, said this was a key barrier to women making it to F1.Other obstacles included the lack of female-specific training, too few role models, and mechanical challenges.

The performance group Hintsa, which is renowned for providing physical trainers for about half the F1 drivers, found that there was "no evidence that there are physical or psychological barriers in preventing women from reaching the top of the sport if given the appropriate support and training", the study said.

Hintsa, which is working with More Than Equal, says the benchmark physical data required for an athlete to compete in F1 is achievable by women.

But it said that all motorsport-oriented physical and psychological training was based on men, and that women needed to be trained in a gender-appropriate and age-specific way.

The study found that there was an emerging younger, female fanbase and that fans want to see direct competition between women and men, but they perceived motorsport to be 20th out of 21 listed sports in terms of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Only 51% of fans knew for certain that women were allowed to compete in F1, with 24% saying they might be allowed, 13% that they could not and 21% saying they did not know.

Donnelly said More Than Equal had presented the results of the survey to governing body the FIA.

Note: This is the seventeenth entry of The Jonicles, hence why the date does not match when this is being posted. This was written back in early July of this year before I started this blog, and there will be errors or developments in how this series was being written. Please enjoy (or don't enjoy) the seventeenth entry of The Jonicles!

It is currently the 7th of July, 2022 at 8:24 pm. The numner of days in between these entries is slowly increasing and its because i keep forgetting to write these or have nothing noteable to really write about... It is currently... Day #50 of my Jon Arbuckle hyperfixation! Jesus Christ! This... This calls for celebration!

Since this entry is on a special occassion, I want to talk about something that's special to me, something that's special to Garfield, and something that a lot of the older fans will know about. Something that, despite having once been a crucial part of the comics, has long since seemed to have faded away out of the panels and into the back of everyone's minds.

That special something is, in fact, a someone, and that someone is Jon Arbuckle's long time friend and roommate, Lyman. First having appeared on the August 7th, 1978 strip (or January 22nd, 1976 if you count the 'Jon' comics) moving into Jon's living space along with his pet dog Odie, Lyman was a major character of the Garfield strip, being a big part of how the dynamic played out and acting as a friend Jon could talk to. Everyone interacted with Lyman in some way and he always had something to bring to the strip whenever he was in it. He was a fun, kind, energetic and athletic man who liked to run and quite extroverted compared to Jon's more reserved personality (at least with the earlier strips, Jon became a little more extroverted as time went on). As a kid, I always thought Lyman was a little weird, but I liked him quite a bit. The comics I first read were, as I've talled about before, ones from the 80s collected by my dad, and whilst Lyman wasn't in a lot of them for reasons I will explain, it was nice seeing him there. In fact, I was so familiar with Lyman and he was so recognisable to me that when I read one of the comics where a one-off character known as Frank, who was supposedly a friend of Jon, appeared and pet Garfield the wrong way, my brain when remembering the strip had completely forgotten about Frank and replaced him with Lyman. So, take what you will of that. Who the fuck even IS Frank anyway????

But despite all that, with Lyman being such a major character and all, he would slowly make less and less appearances in the eaely 80s, sometimes being completely silent or in the background until he would make his last regular appearance in the strip of April 24th, 1983, where his very last spoken words are "Hey, Jon. What happened to you guys?", only being used as the punchline. Lyman made two more cameo appearances, one on Garfield's birthday in 1988, which would be his last appearance in person, and finally, on April 2nd, 2013, Lyman would make his very last appearance ever in the strip, in the form of a photo in the newspaper Jon was reading. And with that, Lyman was gone, seemingly banished from the strip. No explanation, no real reason, nothing. I hadn't realised it as a kid, but when I was reading those Garfield strips from the 80s, it was already too late, as most strips in the books I had were from after 1983, give or take a handful of strips featuring Lyman pre '83. But after that, he was gone, and I hadn't even realised.

And you know, it makes me sad. It makes me sad to know that a character who, while it was small, once brought me a smile or a chuckle as a kid and someone who I grew fond of as the pages turned, not only the pages in the books, but the pages across my life, is gone now. Just a memory, just a footnote. It's like Lyman passed away without warning or explanation, which is a theory that a lot of Garfield fans have as to why this loveable friend of Jon's mysteriously vanished, and one that I'm beginning to believe as well.

When approaching this theory, one could simply point to the newspaper Jon is reading as a clue to the untimely passing of Lyman, and whilst there are not legible words on the page with them just being lines, one could make the assumption that, with Lyman appearing, it could be either a missing persons report or, even worse, a report of Lyman's death. Why else would Lyman be on the front of the paper? Lyman seemed like a normal guy, he was never really a noteworthy figure in the comic's canon, he was just a humble, sweet guy who liked to run and go jogging in the mornings with Jon. He was an unassuming guy, which makes his sudden appearance in the newspaper after having been gone for years a concerning and sad one. The possibility of Lyman just being... dead is one that really saddens me, and what makes this even worse is when you think about Jon when it comes to this theory.

Jon, in the April 2nd 2013 strip is reading a section in the paper that mentions something to do with the hypothesis that if space aliens were to invade Earth, they could take the form of animals. This section seems to have absolutely nothing to do with Lyman unless he's like.... i dunno secretly a xenomorph or something.... But since that theory is very unlikely, this section does not mention Lyman at all. Now, this may seem like an odd thing mention, but to me, it raises the possibility that Jon hasn't seen the article about Lyman yet, seeing as how he seems totally engrossed in the alien article. He looks unaware, unassiming, not like someone who has just seen their long lost friend in the paper for the first time and reading something as devastating as their death. And that means that moments from when this comic takes place, Jon is about to be hit with the bombshell that is Lyman's death, and he will be absolutely devastated by it. There is also the possibility that Jon is simply in denial and is trying to distract himself from this distressing information which is even worse. And considering Jon's mental state, it probably wouldn't be hard to believe.

Speaking of Jon's mental state, it's easy to notice that, since the beginning of the strip, Jon has become more and more unhinged and lonely? Literally the only people he seems to interact with anymore are Garfield, Odie, Liz and sometimes Irma. But even then, Irma doesn't appear as often, so it's mainly just the animals and his girlfiend that Jon interacts with. And ever since Lyman began to fade away, Jon sure has been talking to his cat a whole lot more. The poor guy is probably dying from boredom and loneliness at this point, with Lyman out of the picture, Jon's gotten considerably more unhinged. You see, there's a noticeable difference in Jon's demeanor in the earlier strips, as he appeared more calm and content. Yeah, he was still a little off, but he at least had someone he could talk to about his problems. Yet by the early 2000s, Jon's emotions became a lot more varied and he tended to either jump fron emotion to emotion, or be completely flat and seem depressed. He's more sensitive, he gets angrier a lot easier, he becomes depressed when things go wrong, he becomes depressed a lot more often, and my god was Jon desperate when it came to dating! You remember the strip where he just screamed "HELLOOOOOOOOOO??" into his phone? Poor guy... I really do believe that Lyman's disappearance really did play into why Jon became less coherent and more desperate in the 2000s, and I'm glad Liz came into the picture, as sudden and oddly written as it was. I think Liz was the person that saved Jon in the end, and while Jon's still unhinged, and Liz will never replace Lyman and fill the Lyman shaped hole in my Jon shaped heart, she's definitely good for Jon. He has someone he can talk to, and someone who can help on his road to recovery, and I'm really happy for that. Thank you for being there for Jon, Liz :)

Speaking of Jon, I'd like to also quickly mention two things: There's a Tumblr blog that's dedicated to the theory that the reason Lyman disappeared is because Jon murdered him to obtain Odie for his own needs, citing many edited Garfield strips and other pieces of evidence (all tagged #evidence locker), and I don't have it on hand right now, but there's this really funny set of Sims screenshots that shows Jon killing Lyman in Jon's basement while Garfield just comes down the stairs and hangs around while Odie just watches sadly from the background. Like, Jon's standing there covered in blood and shit and Garfield's literally just sitting there staring at him like "bruh", then after killing Lyman, Jon just sits on a chair and happily reads a book to himself, still covered in blood by the way. It's great

Thing number two: Yes, I am aware of the 4-part special of The Garfield Show called Long Lost Lyman, and no, I do not think that is him. I mentioned this before, but that is not Lyman. Listen, the eye shape on TGS Lyman is COMPLETELY different! And what's worse is that it completely alters the length and shape of his head. Solid Lyman's head is more round and small, but Liquid Lyman's head is oddly elongated and more narrow. Second of all, his hair and moustache shape are completely different! Solid Lyman's hair shape is similar to Jon's, looking curly and short, except it's black, basically. But Liquid Lyman.... Oh my goodness, it's not even close! His hair looks more fluffy than curly and it goes down in this really odd fashion, not similar to Jon's at all. And even weirder is that it's coloured brown. Solid Lyman's moustache goes in a U shape, while Liquid Lyman's moustache honestly just looks more like Mario's, it goes outwards more and just looks... off. And listen, I can understand the producers taking creative liberties with having Jon's hair be more fluffy in the flashback, but here's the thing: Jon's still Jon, and unlike Lyman, he isn't trying to pretend to be Jon! This "Lyman" is an IMPOSTOR! I think that he replaced the real Lyman by trapping him in the basement in Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt and FRAMED Jon Arbuckle! "Don't look in Jon's basement!"? Jon may be unhinged, but he wouldn't go as far as to kidnap and decapitate his closest friend. Jon was sitting outside that mansion quivering in fear because he was afraid. Afraid of what? Afraid of the IMPOSTOR that kidnapped and murdered his friend, of course! They even put his head in the oven, he's a cannibal! And so he wouldn't get caught, Liquid Lyman fled to Australia and became the Zabadoo to avoid conviction, and...

Sigh... Listen, I just want closure, man. I can't just have one of my favourite characters disappear without any explanation like that, and I certainly can't have a sussy impostor just replace him like that either. I need something, I need Lyman to just come back into the strip again and give Jon a hug, tell him where he was all these years and just... Well, just tell him that he's okay. Maybe have him as a recurring character. Or maybe he doesn't have to become a regular again, but I just want to know what really happened to Lyman. He's severely underrated, he didn't even appear in Garfield And Friends, he's not in Garfield Kart, Paws Inc barely acknowledges the guy, if at all. I think we all just need to see our loveable Lyman again because it's been a while... It's been a long while. Jon misses him, man. And I'm sure Lyman misses Jon too, wherever he may be...

Forever in our hearts, never forget the one and only Lyman. 1978 - 1983. We miss you, bud.

I miss Lyman. I miss just being able to see him in my comic books. In fact, the slow disappearance of Lyman is even present in those books the later the issues get. It's incredibly saddening. I just wanna see my boy again, Jon misses him...

... Well, at least with the posting of this entry, we're finally up to date. This is where the old entries end and the new entries can finally start. There are a couple I still need to post like 'What Are The Jonicles?', but apart from that, I'm pretty much all caught up now. Entry 19 is coming soon, and It will be on Jon's birthday this July!

NOLA Final Report

Well after a whirlwind trip, the eagle has landed back in North Carolina. I had to do a Home Alone-style dash through the Charlotte airport and got home at 1am. Jay was so excited to see me in the morning which melted my heart. I got him a New Orleans Bear that he's named NOB.

I was hoping for a clean sweep on Monday which could've gotten me 2nd place. But ended up 2-2 which put me in at 8th overall. I did win a "class" prize of $170 for being in the top 3 "B" class players (aside from those who placed in top 3). That was a fun result and I think I'm regaining some of my Scrabble magic back.

I won the first two games in the morning. Putting down OUTLEA(p)S and VENTURE. Also used a blank to play UM(i)AQ for 54 points. I'd rarely use a blank for a non-bingo, but if it scores 50+ points - I do it.

In the second game I played STRIPER, LIST(e)RS, and ROUGHEN. This was a tough win against a great player (the #1 seed) from Asheville, Bill Snoddy. Bill was a friend of my Scrabble hero, David Gibson. I was telling him I wanted to get a patch on my tile bag that reads, WWDGD? (what would David Gibson do). Gibson is the greatest Scrabble player of all time and was a very kind and generous mentor to players like me! He passed away in 2019 but his legend lives on. When players are doing so well they can't be caught, they are "gibsonized". Bill was saying he was playing a friendly with Gibson on Easter and thought he'd had him beat. But Gibson bingoed out with VERONICA - a cloth impressed with the image of Jesus' face. This reminded me of this grilled cheese sandwich that had the Virgin Mary's face in it. It went for $28,000 on ebay and I'm sure whoever bought it has regrets since it's now a moldy mess.

I lost the last two games. Probably un-winnable given the tiles that I got. Next time I'd try not to dig myself such a hole in the early part of the tournament to give myself a better shot of the top spot.

Next stop? We'll see. Gotta resume my normal routine for a bit and get back to Scrabble when time permits!

On April 8th, 2024, the umbral shadow of the Moon crosses the United States for the second time in less than seven years. It’s a big deal, for sure. But there’s lots more in store for astronomy 2024. Here’s our annual Universe Today rundown for top skywatching events to watch for in astronomy 2024, coming to a sky near you. Astronomy 2024: The Year in Brief The turn of the calendar sees us just over three months out from the April 8th total solar eclipse across North America. Many late eclipse chasers are now presented with a choice: do I head towards the better prospects for clear skies in Mexico or Texas, or take my chances with the dicey springtime skies of the U.S. northeast or the Canadian Maritimes? Top 12 Events: Astronomy 2024 Astronomy is always a paradox of knowns and unknowns. Eclipses and occultations are surefire bets in a clockwork Universe, while clear skies and whether the next touted ‘great comet’ or meteor outburst will perform are less certain. Credit: Dave Dickinson The Sun, Seasons and Solar Cycle in 2024 Expect the Sun to be busy in 2024 in terms of space weather and sunspots, as we head towards the peak of the solar cycle 25 in 2025. 2024 had an average sunspot number of around 120 and no spotless days, the first year since 2015 where this was the case. In fact, solar activity in 2023-2024 is climaxing well ahead of expectations, leading to a stronger than expected solar maximum in 2024. This means more sunspots, more wild space weather, and more aurorae for folks watching from mid- to high- northern latitudes. The astronomical seasons for the northern hemisphere in 2024 kick off on: Spring (northward) equinox: March 20th Summer (northward) solstice: June 20th Fall (southward) equinox: September 22nd Winter (southward) solstice: December 21st Of course, things are reversed south of the equator. Aurorae tend to pick up around the equinox due to a phenomenon known as the Russell-McPherron Effect and so does GEOSat flare season, as satellites way out in geosynchronous/geostationary orbit brighten into naked eye visibility, then wink out when they hit the Earth’s shadow. The solstice tends to see spans where the International Space Station enters reaches full illumination, favoring the northern hemisphere in June and the southern hemisphere in December. The Moon in 2024 The path of the Moon continues its trek towards the Major Lunar Standstill in early 2025, riding extra high versus the ecliptic and the horizon in the winter season, and low in the summer. The Moon also reaches its closest perigee for 2024 on March 10th at 356,893 kilometers distant, and is at its farthest apogee on October 2nd at 406,516 kilometers distant. We also have a ‘Black Moon’ on December 30th, with the second New Moon in a month with two. February 24th is the ‘Minimoon’ or smallest apparent Moon for the year, and October 17th is the Supermoon or largest Full Moon of 2024. The Moon also occults (passes in front of) several bright stars and planets in its passage through the sky. But 2024 also features other eclipses as well spanning two eclipse seasons, including: -March 25th: an 87% penumbral lunar eclipse, favoring the Americas. -April 8th: A total solar eclipse, (maximum totality: 4 minutes and 28 seconds) spanning North America. This eclipse ‘could’ feature a rare treat, with (naked eye?) comet 12P/Pons-Brooks nearby, just 25 degrees east of the Sun. -September 18th: A 9% partial lunar eclipse favoring the Americas, Europe and Africa. -October 2nd: An annular eclipse with a maximum annularity of 7 minutes, 25 seconds favoring the southern tip of South America. 4 eclipses (2 lunar and 2 solar) is the minimum number that a calendar year can contain. In early 2024 Venus lingers in the dawn, but does not reach greatest elongation in 2024. Instead, Venus reaches inferior conjunction on the solar farside opposite to the Earth on June 4th, transitioning from the dawn to the dusk sky. Mercury reaches greatest elongation 7 times in 2024, an extra one versus its normal six: -24 degrees west at dawn (January 12th) -19 degrees east at dusk (March 24th) -26 degrees west at dawn (May 9th) -27 degrees east at dusk (July 22nd) -18 degrees west at dawn (September 5th) -23 degrees east at dusk (November 16th) -22 degrees west at dawn (December 25th) -Venus also occults the +6.4 magnitude star HIP 86060 for India on January 18th, and the +4.7 magnitude star HIP 92111 on (February 1st) for Brazil. Mercury and Venus also both transit the open star cluster Messier 44 in 2024: -Mercury meets M44 on July 6th (with asteroid 4 Vesta nearby!), 24 degrees from the Sun. Venus meets M44 on July 18th, 11 degrees from the Sun. The Outer Planets in 2024 Saturn’s ring angle in 2024 is 2 to 5 degrees wide, as they head towards edge on in March 23rd, 2024. Meanwhile, Jupiter’s outermost moon Callisto continues to ‘miss’ Jupiter, though that’ll change as the orbital plane of the Galilean moons head towards edge-on once again in 2026. Oppositions and the best season to observe the outer planets in 2024 include: -Pluto (June 23rd) -Saturn (September 8th) -Neptune (September 21st) -Uranus (November 17th) -Jupiter (December 7th) The top planet versus planet conjunction for 2024 is Mercury versus Jupiter on June 4th 7’ apart and 12 degrees west of the Sun at dawn. The top bright star versus asteroid occultation for 2024 occurs on June 29th, when asteroid 2819 Ensor occults the +3.2 magnitude star Phi Sagittarii for north Asia. The top star versus planet conjunction for 2024 is Mercury versus Regulus on September 9th 30’ apart, 17 degrees west of the Sun at dawn. Astronomy 2024: Meteor Showers There are 112 meteor showers known and recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), about a dozen of which are major annual favorites. Of course, showers are always best when the pesky light-polluting Moon is near New and out of the way. In 2024, the best showers versus the Moon are: -Eta Aquariids (May 6th) -1% Moon, ZHR~50 -Daytime Arietids (June 7th) +4% Moon ZHR~30 -Delta Aquariids (July 30th) -18% Moon ZHR~30 -Taurids (October 10th) +45% Moon ZHR~10 -Andromedids (December 10th) +5% Moon ZHR~20 Is a Leonid outburst due for November 14th 2024? Comets to Watch For in 2024 We’re certainly due for the next great comet of the century. Though there’s nothing amazing to see in the sky in terms of comets (yet), that could all swiftly change with the discovery of a bright new comet inbound. As of writing this in late December 2023, these are the following comets expected to break binocular visibility: -12P/Pons-Brooks reaches magnitude +3.9 at perihelion on April 21st in the constellation Taurus, 21 degrees east on the Sun. -13P/Olbers reaches magnitude +7.5 at perihelion on July 1st in the constellation Lynx, 21 degrees east of the Sun. -144P/Kushida reaches perihelion on January 26th at magnitude +7.9 in the constellation Taurus, 126 degrees east of the Sun. -C/2021 S3 PanSTARRS reaches perihelion on February 15th at magnitude +7.4 in the constellation Pegasus, 23 degrees east of the Sun. -Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS reaches perihelion on September 28th at magnitude +2.5 in the constellation Hercules, 83 degrees east of the Sun. Weirdness and More: Looking farther out afield, a few double stars on our ‘orbits with spans with short enough to live through’ reach maximum separation in 2023-2025: -70 Ophiuchus reaches a maximum separation of 6.7”; -Delta Equulei reaches a maximum separation of 0.3”; and -The ‘Pup’ of the Dog Star Sirius B reaches its maximum apparent separation of 11.5 arc seconds on its 50-year orbit. True story: I ‘finally’ got to cross the Pup off my visual observing life list in 2023, courtesy of Richard Drumm and his access to the 26-inch refractor at the Charlottesville Virginia McCormick Observatory. Walk of Arts is an all-inclusive Art and Music Festival that began in 2022 as a response to the need for local children to be able to participate in activities that are not sports-related. This event includes a sidewalk chalk competition for children aged 5-18 with celebrity & local artist judges, a selection of food trucks and art-based vendors, a full day of entertainment including both local, regional, and national acts, and over $4,200 in total prizes awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each age sidewalk chalk art category. We are proud to invite you to enter the tenth Washington Beer Awards, the craft beer competition designed specifically to support Washington’s professional brewers.  This Washington-only competition provides an opportunity for all of Washington’s craft brewers to compete in a blind judging format.  It allows recognition of brewing excellence in Washington and provides feedback supporting future competition entry decisions.  Our goal is to provide an unbiased and affordable competition for Washington brewers and raise awareness of Washington craft beer both within the state and on the national level.  We have coordinated with the Washington Beer Commission and the Washington Brewers Guild who endorse this competition as a great way to promote Washington breweries.  While current national competitions provide great recognition, the logistical challenges and costs of entering those competitions constrain brewer participation and have a fairly low medal-to-entry ratio (2022 GABF ~1:33).  Nearby states have awards programs supporting brand awareness that compete on the shelf next to local breweries placing Washington breweries at a competitive disadvantage.  This competition provides an affordable venue for Washington brewers to compete locally and receive a higher caliber of judging than provided at many craft beer competitions.  We leverage invite-only trained judges with a focus on providing feedback tailored for the commercial community with detailed tasting observations assessed against the Brewers Association style guidelines used for entering other craft beer competitions.  While we've held the entry fee at $40 for the past 10 years, due to compounding inflation, the cost will go up to $50 per entry this year. Washington Beer Awards Competition Information

Here’s the basic information you need to know to enter the Washington Beer Awards.  Please see the complete rules on the competition website (www.wabeerawards.com) for all details on entering.

Entering breweries must be a licensed commercial brewery in the state of Washington to participate in the Washington Brewers Awards. 

Brewers may enter up to 10 beers per brewery location.  Each registered brewery location will be treated as a unique brewery for the brewery of the year awards.  Breweries with multiple locations must decide if they want to enter under one registration (with up to 10 entries) or separately.

Entries are $50 / entry and require at least six (6) 12-ounce containers, four (4) 22-ounce containers, or the equivalent of at least 72 ounces and four bottles for each entry.  Acceptable package sizes must be between 10 and 32 ounces.  A minimum of 4 packages must be provided, regardless of container size.

Breweries may register entries from June 30th through July 21st through a registration link available at www.wabeerawards.com/register in categories derived from the Brewers Association style guidelines published as of May 20th.  Any modifications to the guidelines will be posted in the registration process.  Categories may be joined into hybrid, consumer-relevant award categories to ensure competitiveness after final entry totals are known.  All entries will be judged for stylistic and technical merit in accordance with the Brewers Association style category entered by the brewer.

Confirmation of entries and final award categories will be sent to the breweries following the registration period.  Final brewery entry decisions may be made at this time. 

After confirmation, you will be invoiced for the competition fees and mailed a standard license agreement and bottle labels.  Payment and the license agreement must be submitted by August 25th.

Entries will be accepted at drop/mail locations published on the competition website from August 11th through August 25th.  The main drop locations will be in the Seattle & Spokane area.  Distant breweries may coordinate group deliveries at their own discretion.  Additional drop locations may be posted.

Bottles must be labeled with labels that will be e-mailed to you with your invoice and license agreement.  It is acceptable to put the label on top of pre-labeled bottles.

Beers will be judged in accordance with the published competition style guidelines in a blind format by a panel of hand selected judges trained in sensory evaluation.  No brewery information will be provided to judges.

Awards will be presented the weekend of the Washington Craft Beer Summit in early November.  Medals will be provided to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and special awards will be provided to breweries with many winning beers.  Medals are provided to both the brewer and brewery in recognition of the importance of the craftsperson and the supporting company.  Judge tasting notes and awards will be mailed to breweries shortly following the awards ceremony.

Breast Cancer Among Young Women: Look For Symptoms And Treatment Options

Breast cancer is a major health concern affecting women of all ages, but there has been a growing incidence of the disease among younger women in recent years. This trend is a cause for concern and highlights the need for greater awareness about the disease, the factors that may contribute to its development, and the importance of regular breast cancer screening for early detection.

Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer seen among women worldwide, after skin cancer. While the risk of breast cancer increases with age, the disease can occur in women of any age. In recent years, there has been a growing incidence of early-onset breast cancer among younger women, defined as those between the age of 40 and 50. This is a significant shift from the past decades when breast cancer was primarily considered an older women’s disease (over 60 years of age).

(Palm Sunday, April 2nd 2023 A.D.)

Golden Text:       5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  6 He is not here: ... Matthew 28:5-6

Early that morning, on the first day of the week, the sorrow filled women were dutifully, but unhappily, on their way to pay their last respects to a wonderful Friend, Who had gone about doing good.  He had been used of God to affect many lives. They wanted to take care of His badly bruised, nail scarred, spear pierced, bloodied Body. They most likely had tears in their eyes and at that time, all hope may have left them.  This was, they thought, supposed to be the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of all mankind. The Messiah was supposed to restore Israel-Judah to its prominence as a world power as in the days of Kings David and Solomon. He was supposed to become the leader, the king. And now He lay dead in a borrowed tomb that belong to a man named Joseph of Arimathea. And as they walked they may have thought back to the past week.  It had begun with the entry, the Triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. They may have thought about the stark difference between that entry into Passover celebrating Jerusalem and here a week later... . How had things been so rapidly seemingly flipped upside down?

Message Text:  - LUKE CHAPTER 24:1-11

1     Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

This first verse is incomplete without the understanding of the last few verses of Luke 23:

50   And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:  51  (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.  52  This man went unto Pilate, and begged the Body of Jesus.  53  And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.  54  And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on. 55  And the women also, which came with Him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how His Body was laid.  56  And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

Who were the women who went to the tomb that morning? Although the fact that they went to the tomb is most important there is some dispute about which of the loyal women went to the tomb.

There are a number of things about the narrative of the women that can be perplexing when we seek to harmonize their actions across the four accounts. The sheer number of Marys sometimes adds to the confusion! And it even can be difficult to untangle the Greek grammar. For example, is John 19:25 about three women or four?

”[1] His mother and [2] His mother’s sister, [3] Mary the wife of Clopas, and [4] Mary Magdalene” {or}

 ”[1] His mother and [2] His mother’s sister, [that is,] Mary the wife of Clopas, and [3] Mary Magdalene”

Under option A, the reference is likely to Salome (which would make the sons of Zebedee--James and John--the cousins of Jesus). However, option B is more likely, meaning that Mary the wife of Clopas is Mary’s sister (or sister-in-law) and thus Jesus’s aunt.

However another person tells us that there were in reality six women who went to the tomb, that first Resurrection Sunday:

Many historical images only depict 2 or 3 women at the tomb, but if you study the gospels, you will realize there was actually 6. Here are the leading ladies…

Mary Magdalene

According to Luke 8:2, and Mark 16:9, Mary was delivered of seven demons and become a devoted follower of Jesus. According to Mark 16, she was the first person to see Jesus alive!

Joanna

She was a devoted follower of Jesus and helped support His ministry. Her husband Chuza was a steward of King Herod Antipas. (Luke 8:3).

Mary – Mother of Jesus

Out of all the women at the tomb, this Mary is probably the most well known. She is the one who gave birth to our wonderful Savior. Which, if you break it down, she was a witness to the birth, life, death, and resurrection of the Messiah!

What some don’t realize is that this Mary actually had more children …Mary’s other children:

James (He wrote the book of James)

Joseph

Simon

Judas/Jude (He wrote the book of Jude)

At least two daughters

Mary – Mother of James the Younger and Joseph

This can be super confusing since this Mary also has children named the same as Mary, the mother of Jesus! This was super common for families to repeat family names like this. Other nationalities had this tendency. Therefore, in scripture you see them mention their husband’s name or where they were born.

Mary was a disciple and witnessed the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

Mary – The wife of Clopas

The Greek historian Eusebius stated Clopas was the brother of Joseph of Nazareth. If this is the case, then Mary and Clopas were the aunt and uncle of Jesus. This then would make Simeon her son, the cousin of Jesus.

She probably followed Jesus’ ministry early on and became a follower. She witnessed the certification and resurrection.

Salome – The mother of James and John

Salome was a follower of Jesus and also witnessed the crucifixion and resurrection. It is said she was the mother of the apostles, James and John (the sons of Zebedee).

And as the old radio personality of years gone by (Paul Harvey) would say: And now you know the rest of the story.

Bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. We learn from these few words that the serving hearted, loving women who came to the tomb that morning had prepared spices and ointments the day before and now were coming to prepare His Body for a proper send off to Abraham’s bosom, or the place of the souls of the faithful departed, who through the mercy of God rested until the coming of Messiah.

And certain others with them. We have no clear number here from Luke. But what we do see in all of the accounts of that first Resurrection Sunday is that the women did go to the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. How many is unclear.

What is Important? Keep in your mind two things: 1- It is not clear as to the number that went to the tomb where Jesus had been laid, before His resurrection; but 2 -the fact that women went to the tomb and found it empty is historical fact.

2  And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

We find in the account of Mark these words about the great, large stone or rock that was the door into the tomb where was laid the Body of Jesus.

1  And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him.  2  And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.  3  And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?  4  And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.  5  And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.  6  And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: He is risen; He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him.  - Mark 16:1-6

Matthew adds this to the account:

1  In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.  2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.  3  His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:  4  And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.  5  And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  6  He is not here: for He is Risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. - Matthew 28:1-6

3  And they entered in, and found not the Body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the Living among the dead?

They found not the Body of the Lord Jesus. What did their eyes behold? An empty tomb. The Body of Jesus was not there. Where? Why?  What?  They had no idea. This alone indicates that the rumor started by the Jewish leaders that His disciples came by night and took the Body has no substance. The women would have known about strange goings on. Also the women would not have come to anoint a Body.

They were much perplexed.  The women were perplexed (baffled, confused, embarrassed; puzzled). What did this tell them? What had happened? Where was the Body of the crucified Jesus?

Two men stood by them in shining garments. Two beings, who appeared to be male and in the form of a man stood there. They had garments that shone. There was something, strange, different about these two.

They (the women) were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth.

They almost ducked down out of the way. They faced the unknown forms. How did they come to be there? They were frightened. They were afraid they had come some place that they ought not to be.

Why seek ye the Living among the dead? These angels proclaimed that they were in the wrong place. The Body of Jesus was not lying here. He was alive and  had risen from the dead, just as He had said.  Jesus had told them on different and separate times about Himself: and the third day He shall rise again.  (Matthew 17:3; Mark 9:31; Luke 18:33)

6  He is not here, but is risen: remember how He spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,  7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8 And they remembered His words,

When they remembered His Words, they realized:

I serve a risen Savior, He's in the world today;

I know that He is living, whatever men may say;

I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer

And just the time I need Him He's always near.

9  And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

The women who had gone to anoint the Body of the Crucified One, found that He was not there.  They had been told that Jesus had risen from the dead. They gladly and excitedly told this to the disciples. And John tells us:

1  The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.  2  Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid Him.  3  Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.  4  So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.  5  And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.  6  Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,  7  And the napkin, that was about His Head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.  8  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.  John 20:1-8

The Apostle John here focuses on Mary Magdalene and does not mention the other women. But we can only think that she ran to tell the others, but the other women either stayed by the tomb into which the Body of Jesus had been laid, or perhaps they came back in more pensive, thoughtful, manner, walking slowly.

Also we note that Peter was the first male disciple to enter the tomb. However, it appears that John was the first to believe He is Risen from the dead.

10  It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

Mary Magdalene. Wikipedia (this source is not a friend of Christians) reports:

Mary Magdalene (sometimes called Mary of Magdala, or simply the Magdalene or the Madeleine) was a woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of His followers and was a witness to His crucifixion and resurrection.[1] She is mentioned by name twelve times in the canonical gospels, more than most of the apostles and more than any other woman in the gospels, other than Jesus' family. Mary's epithet Magdalene may mean that she came from the town of Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Roman Judea.

The Gospel of Luke chapter 8 lists Mary Magdalene as one of the women who traveled with Jesus and helped support His ministry "out of their resources", indicating that she was probably wealthy. The same passage also states that seven demons had been driven out of her, a statement which is repeated in Mark 16. In all the four canonical gospels, Mary Magdalene was a witness to the crucifixion of Jesus and, in the Synoptic Gospels, she was also present at His burial. All the four gospels identified her, either alone or as a member of a larger group of women which includes Jesus' mother, as the first to witness the empty tomb, and, either alone or as a member of a group, as the first to witness Jesus' resurrection.

Joanna: Wikipedia reports:

Joanna is a feminine given name deriving from Koinē Greek: Iōanna from Hebrew: 'God is gracious'. Variants in English include Joan, Joann, Joanne, and Johanna. Other forms of the name in English are Jan, Jane, Janet, Janice, Jean, and Jeanne.

The earliest recorded occurrence of the name Joanna, in Luke 8:3, refers to the disciple "Joanna the wife of Chuza," who was an associate of Mary Magdalene. Her name as given is Greek in form, although it ultimately originated from the Hebrew masculine name.  ...

Mary the mother of James:

Mary, mother of James is identified in the synoptic gospels as one of the women who went to Jesus' tomb after He was buried. Mark 16:1 and Luke 24:10 refer to "Mary the mother of James" as one of the Myrrh bearers, the women who went to the tomb of Jesus.

Along with Mary Magdalene and Mary of Clopas, Mary the mother of James is known as one of the Three Marys.

Background

Matthew 27:56 says that "Mary the mother of James and Joseph" was watching the crucifixion from a distance. Mark 15:40 calls her "Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses". James the younger is often identified with James, son of Alphaeus. ...

According to the surviving fragments of the work Exposition of the Sayings of the Lord of the Apostolic Father Papias of Hierapolis, who lived c. 70–163 AD, "Mary, mother of James the Less and Joseph, wife of Alphaeus was the sister of Mary the mother of the Lord, whom John names of Cleophas"

Here we have the mention of three specific women, but the verse also says and other women, which would lend veracity to the accounts of those, some of whom believe the number was six (6) women that had gone, as mourning, heart broken, loving women to the borrowed tomb, to anoint the Body of Jesus. Yet, they had found the large, great stone rolled away and had an encounter with two angels, one of whom was the chief spokesperson.  Now they had come back to the place where the disciples were in mourning and told them about Jesus being risen from the dead.

11  And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.  

The disciples who were hunkered down in mourning over the great loss of Jesus, could not believe the good news that Jesus had risen from the dead and thus He is Lord.

Is HE your Lord? Do you confess Him as Lord? Do you live with the firm idea that HE is Lord? Jesus is the Only One Who came to Earth, took on the form of a man, lived a sinless life as a man, to be the sacrifice, the Lamb of God who taketh away the (death penalty, for) sin of the world.

Do you suppose that while on the way to the tomb they remembered Jesus Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem took place in the days before the Last Supper, marking the beginning of His Passion, His time of suffering, death, and resurrection celebrated during Holy Week.

In Matthew 21:1–11, Mark 11:1–11, Luke 19:28–44, and John 12:12–19, Jesus descends from the Mount of Olives towards Jerusalem, and the crowds lay their clothes on the ground to welcome Him as He triumphantly enters Jerusalem.

The triumphal entry is traditionally commemorated on Palm Sunday.

Bethany was located east of Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives. Zechariah 14:4 states that the Messiah would come to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives:

Matthew 21:1-11 refers to a passage from Book of Zechariah [Zechariah 9:9] and states: "All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass."[donkey]

Though Jesus had been to Jerusalem several times to celebrate the three pilgrimage festivals, His final entry into Jerusalem had a special meaning. He was solemnly entering as a humble King of peace. Traditionally, entering the city on a donkey symbolizes arrival in peace, rather than as a war -waging king arriving on a horse. As 20th-century British scholar William Neil comments, "[O]ur Lord enacts His first messianic symbol by entering Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. This, as Zechariah had depicted, was the means by which Messiah when He came would enter Zion, not as a conqueror upon a warhorse but as the prince of peace upon a humble beast of burden."

The ladies must have recalled that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”  The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” ~ Matthew 21:8-11. Yet by the end of the week, perhaps many of the same crowd were screaming: Crucify Him, CRUCIFY HIM!!! 

But it was all a part of the plan of God that stretches back to the third chapter of Genesis and goes forward to the book of Revelation.

14  And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:  15  And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her Seed; It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel. - Genesis 3:14-15

18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;  19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot:  20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, - 1 Peter 1:18-20

8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him (anti Christ), whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.  9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. - Revelation 13:8-9

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I know that You love me.  But I also know that I have sinned and continue to fall short of what You have for me. Please forgive me of my sin and unrighteousness, so that You can hear and answer this prayer. We each, want the heart of these women who went to the borrowed tomb to love, worship and adore their Lord. Then when they found out that Jesus had risen, they had a hard time to first believe. But You, Jesus made Yourself real to them and to Your male disciples who had not gone to the tomb. Then they all believed that, You, Jesus had risen from the dead and You are Lord. Help me to draw nigh (near) to You Lord, my risen Savior that You might draw near to me. I admit that I have had bad thoughts and I ask You to give me the strength to submit myself unto God and then give me the strength and power to resist the devil and all his tricks and devices. I ask You to protect me and God the Holy Spirit, I ask You to come into me, afresh and anew driving from me every thought of the evil one. Please give me the power Your POWER to resist the evil one. And now I pray You will forgive me and restore me to the days of my first love of You. Give me a place of service, I pray.  Make it clear to me, my risen Savior, I pray. I need Thee every hour, every minute, every second of every day. You, my Lord are invited in and anything not of God, I cast out in the Name of Jesus. Thank You for Your patience, Your Grace and Your Mercy. I ask and pray in the Mighty, Wonderful, Magnificent Name of Jesus Christ, God the Son. Amen and amen.
