Predestination (2014)
Tumblr media
Predestination started as a short story by Robert A. Heinlein titled -All You Zombies- and it works better as words on the page. Film's added visuals will allow those familiar with the concept of time travel to figure out key plot points ahead of time. Details. The execution is so good you'll be delighted to see it play out. It's atypical but if you see enough movies, that's a nice change of pace once in a while
When John (Sarah Snook) walks into a bar, he begins making small talk with the bartender (Ethan Hawke). His life story connects unexpectedly with the bartender's true identity; he's a time traveler searching for a terrorist called the "Fizzle Bomber".
I deduced how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. If you're unfamiliar with high-concept, weird time travel stories you may not. Either way, it’s not a big deal because you hardly ever see films like this, which prominently feature time machines but no loose ends. It sets up its rules and follows through all the way. No last-minute chase sequences that will later have you saying “Wait, but how could he do that if…” or random elements that under scrutiny don’t hold up. This is the kind of film that was meticulously written and planned out. Whenever that’s the case, it’s hard not to admire the precise machinery at work.
Predestination is split into two parts. The time travel stuff with the barkeep, and what turns out to be an unpredictable and moving drama with a strong performance by Sarah Snook at its center. Some of what happens is so wild it could’ve easily crumbled, but the performances, the human elements that make up the drama, combined with all of the talks of trips back and then forward in time make you understand every development and decision. The film’s complex timeline also means there’s decent re-watch value in this film written and directed by the Spierig Brothers. It’s fun to figure out and then confirm where/how all the pieces fit together.
Predestination is a sci-fi story that takes chances. There are times when it IS weird but the strangeness is integral to the plot. There are some gutsy decisions made with the casting and the narrative. It works as a mind-bender and as a drama too. It may not surprise you the way it wants to, but you don’t often find science fiction films as intelligent as Predestination. (On Blu-ray, March 16, 2017)

Ask Me Anything
Movie Review: SPOILERS!!
I just finished watching Ask Me Anything, starring Britt Robertson and I have to say, I am very confused. This movie is based on the book, Undiscovered Gyrl by Allison Burnett(Spoiler, the author is a guy which I don't understand why everyone was freaking out over this, Guys can write books too you know). Anyway, the movie starts out inside the life of young high school graduate, Katie Kampenfelt who is taking a year off before attending college which is due to having a relationship with a 31(maybe 32) year old man Dan who happens to be Katie's neighbor*Justin Long's character* with a girlfriend while Katie has a boyfriend, Rory*Max Garver's Character*. Then Dan moves closer to his job as a college professor. This story is told by Katie's perspective through her blog. She seems okay at first but as the timeline goes on, she is very troubled and has some issues mentally and should really seek out therapy(which she does in the movie but she doesn't take it as seriously as she should). It was a really weird movie, I think I might actually read the books to see if I can understand it better. I think I would give this movie a 2 out of 5 stars. There was just so much s*x involved in the movie, I kinda felt like I was watching a porno which I did not care for. I love the actors in the movie and Britt Robertson is one of my favorite female actors. So if you have watched the movie, what did you think of it ? I'd love to talk about it. Please if you have any suggestions of what movies or books I should review next, Please let me know!! :)

Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) “Rudeness is merely the expression of fear. People fear they won’t get what they want. The most dreadful and unattractive person only needs to be loved, and they will open up like a flower.”
The adventures of Gustave, the owner of a famous european hotel and Zero Mustafa, the lobby boy and his most loyal companion, are brought to us through this magnificent and clever movie of the one and only Wes Anderson. This story invloves a painting, a mystery, a theft, trips with trains, the narration of a story and a lot of beautiful landscapes with breathtaking colours.
One of the most recognizable films by Wes Anderson full of clever shots and special performances. A film that makes you laugh, gets you moved and keeps you in the edge of your seat. Wes Anderson is one my favourite directors, his movies are extraordinary and beautiful. Plus Ralph Finnes, Andrew Brody and Tony Revolori are at their best.

. Don’t Blink   2014  Dir: Travis Oates  The movie starts out with a group of friends meeting at a remote cabin resort for a vacation, I know what you're thinking and surprisingly it’s not a Slasher flick. After arriving low on fuel, the group of ten friends discover there is no one to help them fuel up or check in, plates of food are left half eaten and rooms all empty but with the next gas station miles away they’re forced to stay the night.   The concept itself is interesting; people start to disappear leaving no trace of their existence, literally there one second and gone the next. It's this unexplainable phenomenon that causes the group to deteriorate into conspiracy and madness.   The problems I have with the film are few but important, the film itself feels slow to start even though the strangeness starts right away. The music cues and scenario are put together to make you feel unnerved as soon as possible but for me it didn’t work because it came of a little heavy handed. The other issues I had with the film was a lack of chemistry between this group of mostly long-time friends with different interlinking histories, the only point I could really believe them was when everything was unravelling and they confided or conflicted with one another in fear over what was going on. I feel the acting and script was better late on in the film with the reduced group.  Some people may be annoyed at a lack of closure or explanation for the occurrence, I personally was fine with the ending although it was cliché. In closing it was well put together for its budget, the core idea of the film was good but could have been done better and there are some good scenes but I can't honestly say that they're worth sitting through the rest of the movie for.   #moviereview #movie #movieposter #poster #horror #scifi #film #2014movie #menasuvari #dontblink

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Tumblr media
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night isn't exactly frightening. It's a quality I’m willing to forgive because it’s got a lot going for it. The film drips with atmosphere and takes familiar material in interesting directions.
In Iran, Arash (Arash Marandi) is a lonely young man living in the crime-riddled “Bad City”. He takes care of his heroin-addicted father (Marshall Manesh) until his path crosses that of a solitary vampire (Sheila Vand). An unusual romance begins to develop.
Though I wasn't taken by the film as many others, I’m still giving “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” a strong recommendation. The performances are strong and even though there isn't much dialogue exchanged, you can tell what kind of lives these people have lived, what joys and struggles have shaped them into the people you now see. Even the film's villains are multi-dimensional. This dirt clod of a town where the police are non-existent and hope is a fleeting dream creates a necessity for everyone to climbing on top of each other. Everything that goes on between Arash and the vampire (who is never named and credited only as “The Girl”) feels genuine because you’re given only exactly the right amount of information to see why these kindred spirits would click together.
This is a great-looking movie. The black-and-white photography is perfect for the setting and helps accentuate the themes of alienation and loneliness that persist throughout. There are clever parallels and symbolism throughout, with the vampire draining people of their blood, the inhabitants of Bad City feeding off of each other, and humanity leeching off of planet Earth. It's bleak, and it works. Something about the theme of isolation and pointless existence fits a vampire story so well. Paired with what is essentially the tale of a good person being stuck in the slimy underbelly of a society just works.
Let's now address the aspects that could've been improved. At their best, black-and-White movies strip away useless information and allow you to focus on the acting, the dialogue, the story. We know blood is red. If your movie isn’t consciously using color, then you’re not utilizing your medium as best you could. At their worst, black-and-white films are simply different for difference's sake. Maybe even... pretentious. The subtitles combined with the story-drenched metaphors are fine but a lengthy scene of a transgendered person dancing by themselves while holding a helium balloon that could've been cut and made no impact on the story pushes the film into artsy-fartsy territory. The disappointment I felt over the lack of horror or a discussion over the horrifying aspects of a vampire should also be noted. “AGWHAaN” is closer to a comedy than a nightmare. Will these annoy you as they did me? Unlikely. There are better chances you'll be taken by what the film does well, such as explore the idea of feminism in a middle-eastern society or consider a romance between two people from different worlds. This is one to seek out.
Vampire movies are a dime a dozen. Whenever a new one comes out, there’s a bit of an internal dilemma to any horror connoisseurs that venture into the theatre. Is originality now judged on a sliding scale because we’ve seen everything from Nosferatu to Lifeforce? Is it more important for a film to be merely good than original? You don't have to wonder too much when it comes to A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night because it's both. (Original Persian with English subtitles, On DVD, October 16, 2015)

Gone Girl (2014)
“We weren’t ourselves when we fell in love, and when we became ourselves, -surprise!- we were poison. We complete each other in the nastiest , ugliest possible way”
When his wife disappears on their anniversary, a husband finds himself under the pressure of the media and the police. His lies and his strange behaviour will come to light and everyone will be asking the same question. Did Nick kill his wife?
A haunting mystery with praised performaces that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Its the kind of psychological thriller that you think you have guessed the murder, the deception, the betrayal or the whole mystery but in the end you haven’t figured out nothing at all. There are no heroes or villains in this story. Heroes and villains are the stories themselves. Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, this crime movie is a must if you love mystery.
In response to some of the criticisms of the film, Flynn said this: "The whole point is that these are two people pretending to be other people, better people, versions of the dream guy and dream girl, but each one couldn't keep it up, so they destroy each other"
p.s. Great performaces especially by Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck
Genre: Drama, Mystery&Suspense
Directed by : David Fincher
Written by: Gillian Flynn
Based on the book “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn
