2011 Japan Post-Qualifying

Sebtember Challenge #12: Kissy Kissy

Does anyone remember this weird, out of nowhere moment from nearly 12 years ago?

On 10th October 2011, at a press conference in Yokohama after the Japanese Grand Prix, a Japanese presenter made a comment to Sebastian about the audience all wanting to kiss him. Seb admitted he can’t kiss everyone, but added he would give David Coulthard a kiss if he would like it. Surprisingly, Martin Brundle, who was also at the event, gives him the okay to do so, and Seb promptly gives Coulthard a quick peck on the cheek without hesitation before walking back to his designated seat.

According to this article from The Telegraph written by Coulthard himself, he reckoned Seb “hit the booze” when he kissed him and he deserved to “let his hair down” a bit after his success as a double World Champion. However, I’m not so sure he was drunk. He looked pretty sober at the press conference.

The footage is incredibly blurry, so we don’t get a clear view of everyone’s reaction to the kiss, bar the audience’s. The person in the Senna helmet seems to ship them! 🤭

I personally don’t ship them, but I find this story intriguing. Do you ship them?

2011 Japanese GP

Round 15. Surely Seb will get his title this time?

Quali report : the McLarens were supposed to be better than the RedBulls here but the drivers underperformed. Rosberg couldn't do one lap because of issues. Loads of tyre wear. A lot of teams did only one lap. The Ferraris are 4th and 5th. Lewis was sent to improve on his time but slowed down too much on his out lap and had to avoid other cars and ran out of time which is. Such a stupid thing. He's 3rd. Jenson is 2nd. Unsurprisingly Seb is on pole.

Formation lap.

And they're racing!

OMG Jenson has a good start and Seb swerved into him they're lucky they didn't make contact ! That's a bad look. It leaves space for Lewis who overtakes Jenson but Seb is ahead. Jenson is asking for a penalty. It's under investigation.

On lap 3, Seb is 1.5 seconds ahead already. No further action on that incident at the start. Seb is now cruising ahead while Jenson just overtook Lewis. He is slowing down a lot? Alonso is right behind him. He pits. Are his tyres just too damaged or does he have an issue? He's P11. Oh it was a puncture...

Seb also pits from the lead, we're not even 10 laps in. Alonso is flying for some reason. Seb is 6th. Lewis is 7th already. Both Jenson and Alonso pit. And Webber.

Oop. Someone is beached. It's Buemi.

Seb is back in the lead. Button is 2.2 seconds behind. Then it's Alonso and Lewis, Massa and Webber. Lewis is surprisingly slow still in this race imo? He was close to Alonso and the gap is widening instead of closing. Uncharacteristic.

Not even 20 laps in, Lewis is struggling with his tyres again. He goes wide and Massa and Webber are just behind him. Seb pits on lap 20. Webber also? Jenson pits. HE'S AHEAD OF SEB! Lewis pits. Also Alonso pits. Ayy Lewis made contact with Alonso, something went flying.

Seb is chasing Jenson. It's not a fascinating race tbh. Oh there's a safety car? There's no accident so I guess it's because of the debris from Lewis and Alonso’s contact earlier. Oh no wait it was between Lewis and Massa. Oh Massa is gonna be so pissed he was already saying Lewis didn't use his head last race lol. No further action for the incident though. Someone got damage from Schumacher under safety car?

Restart. It's Jenson ahead of Seb ahead of Alonso ahead of Webber ahead of Massa ahead of Lewis. Lewis complains of understeer with possible damage to the front wing. He picks up the pace though.

Seb pits AGAIN. Lewis also. What a mess for tyres this track is. Button pits from the lead. He's still in front. We get radio confirmation that RedBull doesn't intend to pit seb again which is weird. Because why would you say that to everybody. Lewis overtook Massa somewhere. Somehow it's Schumacher leading the race now? Redbull has a conservative strategy but Seb is having none of it and wants to get his spot back from Alonso who's ahead. Lewis cleared Rosberg who was keeping him while Seb attacks Alonso with the DRS. Schumacher pits and Jenson is back in the lead. Seb is attacking Alonso again but can't make it.

10 laps to go. Schumacher got out behind Lewis in 6th, but he's catching on Lewis.

5 laps to go. Seb has been told to not take risks. But the fight in front isn't over. Alonso closes on Jenson who accelerates. Final lap…

And it's the end of the race.

Jenson wins in front of Alonso and Seb. Lewis is fifth. Seb wins his second WDC!

Lewis says it was a bit of a shocking race but Jenson did a great job and congratulations to Sebastian. "We knew that was gonna happen but it was a bit of a perfect season for him" damn he's very disappointed. He says he's gonna keep his head up and keep trying and hopefully he does better the next race. Lee asks him about the repeated incidents with Massa. Lewis says his mirror vibrates so badly he couldn't see him there, he has no problem with him. He says the car is better but he didn't have any grip. He sighs.
