The music icon we praise for her brilliant, honest piercing lyrics, is in fact one of the smartest business woman in the music industry.
Her third studio album (entirely self written) Speak Now sold a million copies as the world turned to streaming platforms like Pandora, Spotify and others.
After her incredible Speak Now World Tour she went back to the studio to continue to expand her musical horizon. This began a cult following of not only purchasing the album, Swifties got a taste for the deluxe version and vinyl was making a come back.
By the time 1989 dropped, the idea of the Polaroids was swept up by fans and the need to collect them all. One physical copy was not enough. We purchased digital copies so we could be the first to listen. After all the benefits to the 1989DLX version came vinyl along with the commitment to national record day.
By the Sixth studio album and pop banger Reputation, blondie was a mastermind. No press, just the tag line “there will be no explanation, only reputation”. Taylor went as far as to create her own magazines and with every purchase fans received a “boost” for the line of tickets for The Reputation Stadium Tour.
Each magazine had a collectible poster and Swifties quickly found themselves proud of all their copies. Vinyl sold so quickly it’s already impossible to find it for a reasonable amount.
The Lover Era brought a brilliant twist and once again showcased how Taylor can inspire fans to buy multiple copies in an exceptional vulnerable way. We got four different versions with diary entries and photos of her growing up. Also, as someone with a car that still has a cassette player, I wound up with seven versions and a hardcore collector. Sadly I missed out on an autographed copy of the CD.
In a time of solitude and crisis, she leaned into her craft and along with help from her family of musicians came Folklore. Naturally the moment it was announced, like many Swifties, I purchased the digital download. Then, she upped the game by offering 8 different, unique physical CD’s & 8 unique vinyls. While my pocket book could not afford them all, this time I would up with 2 autographed copies, 2 different vinyls (gotta have that Target exclusive) , a cassette, and a few different versions on CD.
While many fans have time to process and build up their bank accounts, as the Lover Tour refunds poured in, our hopes for a delayed concert experience shifted and we could invest in the next surprise Evermore. Again, with the same strategy:
Secure digital download
Order a physical copy
Order a Cassette
Order it on Vinyl
2 signed copies
A target exclusive vinyl
Even as many of these recent releases have been available on all platforms, Swifties feel a sense of pride in supporting the physical representation of the art the Taylor continues to fill our hearts with.
And yes, the cycle continues with her re-recorded versions. Scooter Braun & Scott Borchetta should’ve thought twice about screwing with a lyrical genius
