VIRGINIA
2021 Jul 7 (Wed) – We have been working furiously on finalizing plans for the NY Caravan.  We have had to change some things.  One restaurant said they are changing their prices every week because of the high price of chicken.  Really??? How do you run a business like that?
We set off for NY tomorrow, traveling through PA.  Joe & Diane and Rick & Brenda will travel with us.  Ed & Sue were supposed to go with us but they are stuck here getting their rig fixed.  Maybe they’ll be able to join us in a day or two.  Hank & Brenda will be meeting us at the next campground in Intercourse, PA.  We will be there for 3 nights.  The pre-caravan is on!
2021 Jul 4 (Sun) – We took Ed & Sue and Joe & Diane over to the PX and Commissary this morning.  Neither of them is retired so they are not entitled to shop in either store. We show our ID and they get to buy what they want.
After lunch, we did laundry.  Sheba hawked up a hairball last night and left it on the sheet.  So we pulled the sheet off and took it along with the rest of the dirty clothes, over to the laundry room.
We all enjoyed a barbecue for dinner.  Afterward, we watched the fireworks that people were setting off across the bay.  There was quite a bit.
2021 Jul 3 (Sat) – The four of us went to Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill.  It was quite interesting.  Washington had to be convinced to put the stills on his farm but once he did, he had five installed.  His first year of operation, he made more money from whiskey sales than he did from all of his other endeavors combined.  With his gristmill, he was producing flour, grits, cornmeal, and livestock feed.  He was quite the entrepreneur.
We stopped at the post office to pick up a package the Rick & Brenda have been waiting for, but it hadn’t arrived.  Then we shopped at the Commissary.  Brenda made hamburgers and baked beans for dinner.  We put out hors oeuvres and drinks for happy hour.  Joe & Diane and Ed & Sue came over to join us for dinner.  (Ed and Sue were supposed to be here but their RV and car both broke down on the way to Fort Belvoir.  They are currently staying at a hotel on base while they wait for repairs.)
After dinner, we all gathered around for a campfire.
2021 Jul 2 (Fri) – Joe & Diane lent their car to the couple that broke down.  Not only did their motorhome breakdown, but their car did as well.  Both are getting worked on today.  Since Joe & Diane lent their car to their friends, they needed a ride to the commissary.  We took them at 9 this morning.  They picked up some items at the PX, then food at the commissary.
At 1:00 PM, we met Rick & Brenda and drove to the Pope-Leheighy House.  It is a home that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a beautiful architecture and we enjoyed the tour.  Located next to the house was Woodlawn.  This was a beautiful colonial home built by George Washington for his nephew and granddaughter-in-law.  He gave them the house and 2,000 acres from his Mount Vernon property. Unfortunately, we were not able to tour the house.  They were just finishing up a needlepoint display and they had taken all the house decorations down for the display.  They will be putting everything back together and opening to tours again after July 25.
At dinnertime, I cooked zucchini chips and Paul barbecued an Alaskan salmon. Rick & Brenda made the salad and cooked up some scallops.  It was a good meal.  Afterward, we had a campfire.
2021 Jul 1 (Thu) – We went food shopping at Amazon Green today. It was a near digital experience.  They have a shopping cart with a scanner.  You dial up the app on your smart phone.  Then as you pick up each item you want to buy, you scan it on your phone.  Shopping bags are already located in your shopping cart; you put the items you scan in your bags.  When you are done, your credit card is charged (Amazon has that info on file) and you leave.  You have no need to go to the cashier.  We changed our minds at the last minute and did not use the app.  I do not like anything that holds on to the information about my credit cards or bank accounts.  We shopped the old fashioned way.
I went to Great Clips for a haircut.  I tried to talk with the hairdresser but she spoke very poor English and she was hard to understand.  After I got home, I did more chopping on my bangs as I felt they were still too long.
We stopped at Baja Fresh for lunch.  It was a kind of Mexican fast food place.  The food was ok.  I cooked an elbow macaroni dish for dinner which we shared with Rick & Brenda.
I drove to the campground office to pick up the check-in documents for 3 folks coming into the campground.  The office closed at 3 and they still weren’t in.  George & Sue arrived and I gave them their paperwork.  Joe & Diane arrived later around 6; the couple traveling with them had a breakdown and they left them on the road waiting for a tow. Joe & Diane will be traveling with us through Pennsylvania to the New York caravan.
2021 Jun 30 (Wed) – We drove over to WalMart to get an oil change in the truck. While it was being serviced, we walked across the road to Panera Bread and had bagels for breakfast.  We then walked next door and wandered through the World Market then Home Goods looking for new rugs for the RV.  We didn’t find what we wanted.
When the truck was done, we drove back to the base PX and bought a new grill.  Paul and Rick had priced the grill on the internet last night and the PX was the cheapest price.  Add to that the fact that they don’t charge tax in the PX and we had a real good savings.
Merlin came by us wearing his face mask.  He said he started feeling bad last night and worse today.  So he went to the base hospital and got tested for COVID-19 . . . just in case.
Bonnie has had diarrhea for on and off for the past five days.  We cooked chicken and rice for her one day.  It seemed to help then things got worse again.
Two rigs have dropped out of the New York caravan. That brings us down to 16 paying rigs. One more drop out, and we will be at the threshold for canceling the caravan.  Hope we don’t lose anyone else.
2021 Jun 29 (Tue) – The four of us went to the National U.S. Army Museum.  It is new and we haven’t been here before.  We spent over 3 hours wandering around the displays.  There was so much to read and look at.  We had lunch in the cafeteria.  During our visit, we found out that the museum only opened in October last year, 2020, then closed a month later.  They just reopened 2 weeks ago.
After we got back, we had dinner together.  Brenda made pasta and I made salad.  Everything was very good.  Merlin was too tired to join us.
2021 Jun 28 (Mon) – We went into town to look for a grill. We couldn’t find what we wanted. We went to the PX and looked for an RV dealer nearby but there were none.  We picked up pet food at Pet Smart and found a toy for Sheba.  We were delighted!  Lunch was at Famous Dave’s.  I had ribs and Paul had burnt tips.  The food was on the spicy side.
Rick & Brenda came over for drinks.  We made margaritas.  Another SMART member, Merlin, pulled in today.
2021 Jun 27 (Sun) – We went into Washington, D.C. for a 12:15 p.m. admission to the International Spy Museum.  Brenda & Rick drove.  We had been there in 2013.  The building and entire area was totally different from when we were last there. The place was huge!  You could easily take 3-4 hours to see everything. The museum was very crowded and it was difficult to get near much of the displays.  But we all managed to enjoy the place any way.
When we got back to the campground, Rick & Brenda brought their grill over and we enjoyed steak, potatoes and salad.  We visited afterward as it was too breezy to work on the travel guides. We have time to get to them. There’s no hurry.
2021 Jun 26 (Sat) – We did our laundry early this morning. The laundry room was full of gnats and other flying insects.  We brought wipes to clean off the tables and machines so we could fold our clothes. It was gross!
We also drove to Food Lion to pick up some groceries and to Office Depot to get the printed copies of the Travel Guide.  We stopped at McDonald’s for lunch; something we don’t do very often.
We drove to George Mason Gunston Hall with Rick & Brenda this afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. tour  It was an 1800th century home of one of America’s founding fathers.  Mason wrote Virginia’s Bill of Rights, which Jefferson later modeled to write the Bill of Rights for the new nation.  It was a lovely home and had several outbuildings on the property to explore as well.
Afterward, we stopped at Fair Winds Brewing for beer and BBQ.  We all sat out on the patio and enjoyed beers (except me since I don’t care for beer) and food.  When we got back, we started work on putting the travel guides together. It was slightly breezy and made it difficult to work but we were able to get 11 books done.
2021 Jun 25 (Fri) – We finished up the Travel Guide this morning. Brenda and Rick picked us up and we drove first, to Office Depot, then to Occoquan, the quaint little town we discovered a few years ago.  We had lunch at a restaurant on a patio overlooking the Occoquan River.  There were several people in kayaks and on paddle boards.
After lunch, we walked down the picturesque street with its historic buildings. We popped into a chocolate shop and had a wonderful visit with the owner of the establishment.  He gave us quite an education on cacao beans and the chocolate process.  We all bought chocolate bars.
More walking and exploring, then we stopped in to the VFW Lodge.  We sat at the bar and ordered cocktails only to be told they only serve wine and beer.  It didn’t fit the bill so we left.
We went to a Tiki Bar on the river and had cocktails on the patio then returned to the campground around 5:30 p.m.
2021 Jun 24 (Thu) – We pulled up stakes and left Fort A.P. Hill at 10:15 a.m.  It was an easy two hour drive to Fort Belvoir.  We had our site number already so we drove directly to the campground rather than stop first at Outdoor Recreation.  Oops!  There was a gated entry into the campground and no room to turn around.  I called the office and got the gate code and we parked on our assigned campsite.  After set up, we hurried over to Outdoor Rec, got checked in, got our permit and other paperwork, then rushed to the main gate to help Brenda & Rick get passes onto base.  They were already there and walking out of the visitor center with their passes.  We got in front of them and led the way to the campground.  Since we had the gate code and they knew their site assignment, we led them directly to the campground.  We advised them to sign in at Outdoor Rec after they were set up.  They didn’t hear (or understand) what we said and took their time setting up.  By the time they went over to check in, the office was closed (open from 9 to 3).
At 4 p.m., Brenda and Rick came over and we had happy hour until 5:30 p.m.  When they were gone, I popped a pizza in the oven for dinner.  Gene (President of the Nomads) and Sharon stopped by.  They are only here for the one night.  After pizza, we played card games.  SYN (Screw Your Neighbor) and Kings in the Corner were a lot of fun. They left when the sun was going down and it was getting cold.
Tonight was the last Supermoon of the year.  It is called a Strawberry Moon, because it is when the strawberries are in season.  It was a beautiful sight.
2021 Jun 23 (Wed) – We stayed in the campground all day working on the Travel Guide for the caravan.  We are pushing to get this done so we can get it copied at the next town. There won’t be any big towns after we leave Fort Belvoir.
2021 Jun 22 (Tue) – We packed up and left Verona at 9:25 a.m. It rained on and off during the drive to Bowling Green where we are caped at Fort A.P. Hill.  It is a fairly new campground with full hookups.  The campground is about half full.  We have a pull through site with no shade.  We are only here for two nights.  We will try to finish up the travel guide so we can get it copied while we are at Fort Belvoir.  We don’t think there will be any big cities between there and when we start the caravan in New York.
2021 Jun 21 (Mon – First Day of Summer) – We stayed in the campground all day today, working on the travel guide and maps of the NY Caravan.  We only have a few days left before we start to join up with other members of the caravan in D.C.  We are almost done.
2021 Jun 20 (Sun) – We drove to the Grand Caverns this morning. I bought a two-for-one ticket on Groupon and $40 tickets wound up costing us $19.99.  That’s a pretty good deal!  The caverns were fantastic; every bit as phenomenal as Mammoth or Carlsbad Caverns.  The rooms were huge and there were lots of speleoforms to admire.  In addition, they had formations called shields.  No one knows how they form but they seem to be unique to these caverns.
We went to Rack ‘Em Smack ‘Em for lunch.  It was a ribs place.  They were OK. Paul had mac & cheese.  Still pink like them put ketchup in it.      After the caves, we went to the Barren Ridge Winery.  We were supposed to make a reservation ahead of time but didn’t. They were able to seat us out on the patio any way.  I didn’t like any of the white wines.  Paul liked one of the reds and we both enjoyed the port.  So we bought 2 bottles of port and one bottle of the red wine.
I cooked some meatballs for dinner that we had bought at the supermarket the other day. They were so spicy hot!  I took one bite and pushed them aside.  We wound up heating up a pizza for dinner.
The campground pretty much emptied out today.  I am glad we left for the day so we didn’t get caught up in all the activity of so many trailers moving out.
One of the campgrounds we will be going to upstate during the caravan tried to call but I told them to get back to us on Tuesday when we move.  Hopefully, the cell phone signal will be better.
2021 Jun 19 (Sat) – We worked on the travel guide.  At noon, we packed it in and drove into town for lunch at the Edelweiss Restaurant.  It was a German restaurant with an authentic German waitress.  The food was good, as was the wine and beer.   Next stop was at PetCo to pick up dog food then to Kroeger for groceries and cat food.  Since the cell phone signal is so bad in camp, we made a couple of calls to friends and our grandson while we were out and the signal was good.
The campground is chock full of campers.  There is a lazy river that runs next to the campground where they have tubing. Groups of tubers walk by with their big tubes on the way to the launch point.  The day is very warm and muggy.  I bet the water feels good.
Bonnie woke Paul up at 2:30 a.m.  She has diarrhea.  She’s been good for a long time.  We stopped giving her the supplements and goat’s milk when we started making sure the food we give her is AAFCO approved.  That seems to have been good enough.  We’ll see if this is one day or another bout.
2021 Jun 18 (Fri) – Work on the travel guide is going slow. The problem is the very poor internet signal here in the campground.  We just can’t connect which makes it impossible for Paul to get the maps done.
We finally took a break at noon and drove into town for lunch.  Staunton (pronounced STAN-TEN) is a very lovely, historic town with lots of brick buildings and round towers.  We had lunch at the Clock Tower Eats & Sweets. The food was bland and unappealing. And the waitress was slow.
After lunch, we walked down the block to the Camera Heritage Museum.  What a fascinating place!  The museum, if you could call it that, was a small store front jam packed with cameras from all eras.  The owner followed us around the store as we admired all the cameras, regaling us with stories of cameras and pictures.  His collection was amazing, yet he said it only represented about 25% of his total collection.  He is trying to raise money to buy a building that can house his collection.  Trip Advisor voted him among the top world attractions.  Quite an honor.  Unfortunately, he needs to raise millions of dollars before he can reach his goal.  He only has four years left to do it.
When we returned to the campground, there was a long line of RVs coming in.  We sat in our chairs and watched droves of campers arrive all afternoon long.  The campground of more than 200 sites filled up almost completely.  There are lots of children and golf carts.  The smell of outdoor cooking and campfires fills the air. We tried to have a campfire but it was too hot sitting in the sun in front of the fire.  We got up halfway through and went back in to the air conditioning to watch the fire through the window.  Lol.
2021 Jun 17 (Thu) – We went to the Augusta Military Museum. When a soldier returned home after the Civil War, he found all the schools burned down.  Wanting the boys/men to have a decent education, he built a school.  It later became a military academy when it was obvious that better discipline was needed. But it was not intended to be a preparatory school for military service, although many of the boys went on to service in the military.  The school remained in service until 1984 when it closed due to financial difficulties. The museum was in the home of the former schoolmaster and exhibits were displayed in four small rooms on the first floor.  We also watched a half hour video about the school and the men who attended.
Next, we went to a local restaurant for lunch.  The interior had tables and booths arrayed around a large, open room. The waitress was very fast and efficient – a delight down here in the south.  The food, however, was terrible.  I had a chicken salad wrap that had too much vinegar in it.  Paul had a mixed wrap that was very dry (it was ham, turkey, cheese, tomato and lettuce).  It needed mayonnaise.  His mac & cheese was pink, making us think they put ketchup in it.
After lunch, we went to the Stonewall Brigade Museum.  It was all about the history of a local unit from the French & Indian Wars to today’s Gulf War.  It was small compared to many other museums we have been to but it accomplished its purpose.      The campground is filling up.  It will be full this weekend.  The camper next to us has two large dogs that they don’t leash.  In addition, the owner doesn’t pay attention to what his dogs are going so that means he’s not picking up after them.  We will have to make a complaint.
The Verizon cell service around here sucks!  I can’t open the mail and other postings just sit there.  The Internet is inaccessible at this point.  Even in town, the service is severely limited. This town must be down in a big hole. **sigh**  Not even the cell phone booster we bought is helping.
2021 Jun 16 (Wed) – We rode to Staunton today. First stop was at the Yelping Dog for lunch.  It was a pizza and taproom.  We each had a glass of wine and a sandwich.  After lunch, we walked up and down the street.  The town was very quaint and had lots of historic buildings and shops.
Next, we went to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum.  There were three buildings.  The first one we entered was the home that Woodrow Wilson was born in.  He only lived in the house for 18 months then his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There was lots of family in Staunton though, so they came back to visit often.  Woodrow Wilson always thought of Staunton, VA as his home even though his family moved several times.  He was the only president to earn a doctorate despite the fact that he had a learning disability that made it very difficult for him to read.  What an interesting character he was!
The middle building was a private home where they placed the ever popular gift shop. The third building was the museum. There was a display of a WWI trench. That kind of thing always makes me shudder.  It was thought to be so cutting edge in its day yet it was so barbaric.  Ugh.  We walked through rooms with lots of plaques to read and artifacts to view.
2021 Jun 15 (Tue) – We packed up and left Fancy Gap at 9:30 a.m. The weather (finally) was clear with blue skies.  It was a long drive.  We stopped at a humongous truck stop.  They had 500 parking spaces for trucks with a truck wash, medical testing for drugs, a clinic, a steak place, a fast food eatery, and fuel station.  We just parked to use the bathroom and walk the dog and then were on our way.  We arrived at the campground at 1 p.m.
This is a KOA.  It is a large campground spread out over low hills with lots of grass and trees.  It is very pretty to look at.  There is a river and waterfalls at the back of the park. They rent tubes for campers to float on the river.  There are lots of things to do – a large pool, four hot tubs (currently closed), pool tables, a video arcade, horseshoe pits, etc.  We have a 30-amp and water hookup but no sewer.  The bathrooms are pretty far away.  There are rabbits everywhere!  They even have signs us warning not to pick up or chase the rabbits and they sell food to feed them.      The cell phone signal in this campground is the pits!  I can’t post on Facebook and it is difficult to research anything on the internet.  This will be a tough week since we have to start coordinating with the various campgrounds and venues for the caravan.
We spent the afternoon and evening working on the travel guide.  Things are starting to come together nicely.
2021 Jun 14 (Mon) – We took a ride into town for lunch at the Gap Deli.  The food was pretty good.  Afterward, we drove around the area for a bit.  This a beautiful area.  Lots of greenery and well built homes.
2021 Jun 13 (Sun) – We stayed in the campground today, working on the paperwork for the caravan.  We did the laundry and bought dinner from the office.  The smoker was going all day and the smell was very appealing.
2021 Jun 12 (Sat) – We took a break and went for a drive, stopping at 13 Bones for lunch.  The ribs were not that good yet the place was packed.  We figured it must be something pertinent to this region.  We also stopped at WalMart to do some shopping. Returned home in the worst rainstorm. Ugh.  Thunderstorms rolled through and poor Sheba spent the day hiding in the closet.
2021 Jun 11 (Fri) – We stayed in the campground all day working on the documents for the caravan.  Our tail gunner had put together maps but we couldn’t get the program he used to mesh with the program we are using to create the Travel Guide.  Paul wound up having to recreate all the maps.  Ugh.  What a waste of effort!
We had lunch and dinner at the KOA BBQ office.  We met a couple parked to us from NC.  We had a very interesting conversation until our dinner was delivered.  Ray asked for information about SMART.  Paul gave him a magazine.  We would have given him a brochure but it got rained on the other day and we lost all the brochures we had sitting out for people to take.  We will have to send for more.
2021 Jun 10 (Thu) – We went food shopping at the Food Lion today.  Before then, we stopped at Aunt Bea’s Dining Room for lunch.  It was a kind of cafeteria.  You picked your food from a variety of items on a hot table, then sat at a table in the dining room.  It was ok.
2021 Jun 9 (Wed) – We took a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway today.  There are so many lush, green trees in this state.  We stopped at the Mabry Mill, an historic Appalachian homestead on the parkway.  It had a mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and other artifacts.  A ranger was working in a shed on a weaving loom.  She explained the process to us and showed examples of her work.  It was an interesting stop.  Also along the Blue Ridge Parkway was a rail fence exhibit that showed several different types of fence made by wooden posts and poles.
Tumblr media
We stopped at a winery in Floyd.  You could only have a tasting if you were fully vaccinated.  Since I am not vaccinated, we sat out on the patio and had a glass of wine with bread, cheese, meats, and fruits.  Neither of us enjoyed the wine but the experience was nice.  It rained pretty hard most of the day.
The program for the Max Air Fan in the kitchen arrived.  Unexpectedly, it worked!  The fan is now in action again.  How wonderful!
2021 Jun 8 (Tue) – Well, I am back from New York. It was a long 3 weeks.  I had originally planned to help out my sister, Susan, after knee surgery but she changed her mind and cancelled the surgery.  My plans were already made so I left them alone.  I stayed at her house and borrowed her Tesla during my stay.  That is quite a car!  Great for a speed demon like my sister.
I had a PET scan at Memorial Sloan Kettering.  The results were spectacular!  There were no metabolically active lymph nodes.  Unfortunately, my oncologist moved to Texas and a new doctor was assigned to me but could not fit me into her schedule.  I will see her at my next appointment.  I asked the nurse if I could stop the chemotherapy but she said to continue as usual until I talk with the doctor.
I also saw the cardiologist.  He ordered a stress test which I passed with flying colors.
I got to visit with my brother, Chris, and brother and girlfriend, Dennis & Denise, over the holiday weekend.  I took my grandson, Caiden, out a few times and visited with my daughter and husband, Lilah & Kenny.  I also stopped over my Cousin Claude’s house and visited with him and his daughter, Kathy.  I also caught up with our friend, Jan, who happened to be outside in her garden when I drove by.  She had knee surgery and is recovering nicely.  And I got to have dinner with my daughter, Gina.
Susan volunteers at a wildlife rescue center and I was able to go with her twice.  That place was overrun with raccoons, squirrels, and ducklings.  Wow!  There were many other types of animals and birds there as well.  Susan’s daughter, Sharon, flew home for a few days and we went into the city for a day.  Sharon has ongoing dental treatments at a specialist in New York City.  Except for less people and cars, everything looked the same.
My flight home was disrupted by thunderstorms and I wound up spending a night at a hotel in Baltimore.  But I ultimately made it home to my honey.  While I was gone, Paul got the Spyder Control program fixed and we are back on the road!  We were afraid that we would have to cancel the caravan if we didn’t get the problem resolved.  Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

Fed Sells Sanctuary; A Flash in the Pan
Fed Sells Sanctuary; A Flash in the Pan:
The Fed Sells Sanctuary
“Oh, the heads that turn make my back burn.” — The Cult, She Sells Sanctuary
As the coronavirus began to spread in the U.S. over the weekend, we got our first look at just how economically devastating the disease can be … in China.
In fact, Chinese manufacturing all but evaporated in February, with the Caixin/Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) plunging to 40.3. Economists were looking for a reading of 45.7 from this economic bellwether.
Official numbers were even worse, as the Chinese government reported a PMI reading of 35.7 for the month. Readings above 50 indicate economic expansion, while readings below indicate contraction.
And if that wasn’t enough, data also revealed that gaming revenue in Macau fell 88% in February.
China is in a bad way — that much is clear. But there’s hope on the horizon…
World central banks appear to be on the verge of diving into the fray to help assuage economic conditions, and investors. On Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank would “use our tools and act as appropriate to support the economy.”
Italy’s economic minister said Sunday that the government would drop $4 billion to ease the COVID-19 impact on the economy, while the Bank of England said this morning that it would take “all necessary steps.”
It’s like some international-banking version of Voltron is forming here to battle the evil coronavirus forces!
Analysts at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) even said that they believe the U.S. Fed would cut interest rates sooner rather than later to prevent a virus-induced financial meltdown.
“There will be a coordinated easing across the major central banks and, possibly, the People’s Bank of China and the [Hong Kong Monetary Authority],” said Bank Policy Institiute’s chief economist Bill Nelson. “The cut will be substantial, at least 50 and possibly 75 basis points.”
The Takeaway:
First off, let’s applaud the market and global central banks for finally taking COVID-19 seriously. I mean, after seeing how the virus devastated China’s manufacturing output, it’s kind of hard not to.
It’s important to note, however, that this thing’s just getting started. Economies around the globe will be tested. The Federal Reserve can cut interest rates all it wants (well … with rates sitting at 1.5%, not all it wants), and that may calm investors. But interest rate cuts won’t keep thousands of workers from getting sick, which would affect economic growth and consumer spending.
Here’s what I’m getting at: While the markets corrected nearly 12% across the board in the past week, we’re likely to see a few more jitters going forward. Last week’s shocker was Wall Street’s attempt to price in COVID-19’s impact on growth.
Barring any major catastrophes, there will be a few more adjustments here or there as the market adjusts to the reality of COVID-19 in the U.S. market. But, all in all, the worst for the market should be over.
I could be wrong — I hope I’m not wrong — but now appears to be a good time to start bargain hunting. I’m not talking speculation on momentum stocks. I’m talking snapping up long-term growth companies that will endure even after the coronavirus is gone.
There are quite a few of these out there right now, and Banyan Hill expert Jeff Yastine is the man to follow.
With the whole biotech sector screaming “pandemic!” there’s never been a better time to find undiscovered biotech diamonds. Today, Jeff has his eye on one biotech stock that he believes is set to soar — and it still trades at bargain-basement prices.

Good: Refresh Your Memory
In the past week, few sectors have been hit harder than tech. With many tech supply lines running through China, it’s understandable. But Baird analyst Tristan Gerra would like you to … ahem … refresh your memory.
Gerra turned bullish on a trio of DRAM/NAND flash memory makers this morning, noting that “flash pricing positive outlooks remain unchanged despite current demand weakness in China.”
In a note to clients, Gerra upgraded Micron Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) to neutral, lifted Seagate Technology PLC (Nasdaq: STX) to outperform and boosted Western Digital Corp. (Nasdaq: WDC) two notches to overweight.
I have to believe that Gerra is onto something here. We have a smartphone upgrade cycle coming with 5G, and we have a game console upgrade cycle coming with the PlayStation 5 from Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and the Xbox Series X from Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) — both of which use drives that run on flash memory.
There’s some inventory at flash memory suppliers still in the pipeline. However, with supply chain disruptions across China, that inventory will only last so long. This means pricing power for flash makers such as Micron, Seagate and Western Digital. And pricing power is good.
Better: Bear Turns Bull on GE
It seems the predictions for General Electric Co.’s (NYSE: GE) demise were overly exaggerated. As a result, many in the brokerage bunch are now singing a different tune on the company.
This morning, Stephen Tusa, a JPMorgan analyst and a longtime GE bear, joined the bullish choir with three simple words: “We were wrong.”
Tusa lifted his rating on GE to neutral and raised his price target to $8, citing GE’s better-than-expected performance in 2019. But, while Tusa may no longer be a GE bear, you’ll notice that his target is about 26% below GE’s current trading range.
The JPMorgan analyst may have admitted that GE isn’t as bad as he expected, but he noted that “we continue to see structural concerns in the key power market, as well as peakish fundamentals in aviation.”
So, GE isn’t out of the woods just yet. But the company has potential if it remains on its current growth and restructruing path. As such, GE looks like a bargain at these levels.
Best: A Little Bird Told Me…
… that running two companies at once might not be the most productive thing in the world. That little bird? Elliott Management Corp.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Elliott has taken a $1 billion stake in Twitter Inc. (Nasdaq: TWTR). The activist investment firm looks to flood Twitter’s board with its own nominees … reportedly in hopes of ousting CEO Jack Dorsey.
Dorsey also heads payment processor and point-of-sale disruptor Square Inc. (NYSE: SQ).
The oddity of Elliott’s move is that it comes just after Twitter’s quarterly revenue topped $1 billion for the first time ever last quarter. However, earnings on the quarter fell 50% year over year, which means Dorsey’s Twitter is spending quite a bit of cash.
Apparently, Elliott thinks Twitter can do better at returning some of that cash to investors. This will be an interesting and potentially lucrative situation to watch.
Look, in order to be a stock market investor you HAVE to have some level of optimism about the future. Remember: more people wake up trying to make the World better than make it worse and that, my friends, is worth investing in.
— Michael Antonelli, Baird equity sales trader.
I know that Great Stuff has been all over the “doom and gloom” on the coronavirus lately. But I feel the need to set the record straight. I’m not a bear at heart.
I’m a market bull … but I’m a realistic bull.
Great Stuff’s goal over the past month was to prepare you for the 12% dip that followed the COVID-19 outbreak. We knew that, once Wall Street finally woke up to the risk that this virus posed, things would get bad quickly … and you needed to be prepared.
If you’re a buy-and-hold type, you needed to know what was coming so you could hedge your positions over the short term. If you’re a short-term speculative investor who likes to jump on red-hot momentum stocks, you needed to know so you could take profits and get out of Dodge.
What I like about today’s Quote of the Week is the optimism behind it.
People are, on the whole, trying to better themselves and make the world a better place. Stocks and markets always trend higher over the long term. These are important things to remember — especially in the middle of a possible pandemic such as the coronavirus.
That said, you can have a positive, long-term bullish outlook and still protect yourself over the short term. It’s just common sense. And that’s Great Stuff’s ultimate goal, I think: common sense. (Though, a heavy dose of humor makes it all go down more easily.)
Until next time, good trading!

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 8/31/2019
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Saturday, August 31st, 2019. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Saturday Sun Nation Newspaper (SS).
WAY FORWARD – A major step has been taken towards having a medical marijuana industry in Barbados with the piloting of the Medicinal Cannabis Industry Bill 2019 in the House of Assembly yesterday. Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir piloted the much-touted legislation in a comprehensive presentation during the opening session of the House.Up front he dismissed fears surrounding the legalising of marijuana by explaining the Bill was not intended to decriminalise cannabis that is used for recreational purposes, but to make way for Barbados to secure a stake in the global medicinal cannabis business that is projected to reach US$100 billion in trade in six years. The minister said the move to develop a medical marijuana industry represented a paradigm change in the process of wealth accumulation by Barbadians, since the industry provided for nationals to have a major stake in the business.(SS)
PARTY RAPS GOVERNMENT FOR HANDLING OF TOURISM AFFAIRS –The People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PdP) has given the Barbados Labour Party a failing grade with respect to matters on tourism. The verdict was handed down by the party’s spokesperson on tourism and regional and international transport, Scott Weatherhead on Thursday in the Leader of the Opposition’s office in Parliament.“We believe the Government is doing a really poor job of managing the tourism sector given the restructuring of the various tourism entities of Government-owned and managed state owned enterprises now together, along with some of the other projects legislated to come online, many of which have been stalled. “Some have been badly handled, particularly the Hyatt project and the acquisition of lands. You don’t go about a project like that where Government goes and acquires private lands ostensively and then leases those lands for another private hotel,” he charged. (SS)
DEXTER JAMES & QEH PART WAYS - Dr Dexter James is no longer at the helm of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). In a media release tonight, the Board of the QEH said the two parties “have mutually agreed to part ways”with effect from today. James was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital In October 2009 and was tasked with leading the transformation of the 600-bed tertiary care teaching institution. He has been on sick leave since February 27, 2019.
STILL NO WHERE TO GO – Germaine Felix is caught in limbo with the Welfare Department, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and a landlord who wants her out of her house now. She claims that this morning when she went to the Welfare Department to ask for assistance to acquire food and school supplies for her children, she was told that her plight could not be heard until September 23. Her initial appointment for August 26 was cancelled due to the passage of Tropical Storm Dorian. “I even fill out a paper to get uniform for them this morning. But because the lady tell me I got to come back, them can’t go to school when school open because I don’t have nothing for them. “If I got to wait until the 23rd school wouldn’t be opened already? I supposed to get a food voucher but I got to wait all until the 23rd and I ain’t got nothing home for them to eat,” she said.  In addition to not having food in her house, the utilities have been turned off because Felix has been unable to pay her bills. Then, earlier this month, Felix received yet another notice from her landlord giving her and the children 14 days to get out the house. But, the St Lucia-born who contended she has nowhere to go with her children who were born in Barbados said that while she was sent to the NHC to fill out an application form weeks ago, she was told that no housing was available. She said officials at the Welfare Department told her to find a house and they would make the effort to assist her in paying the rent. However, according to Felix, she was not finding any potential landlord who was willing to enter an agreement with the Welfare Department. “It is hard for me to get a house. I went to a gentleman and he said welfare does take too long with the rent money and he don’t want to wait. But I still looking around. I just need a house to get out of here. I ain’t got no water, I ain’t got no light. “I got to be going at people and asking them for water. The truth is I don’t want help all the time, it is until I get back on my feet. As long as I get through, I will give somebody else that really need help. I just need the help,” she said. It was in July when Barbadians became familiar with Felix’s urgent appeal for assistance after she declared that the owners of the King Street, City house had given her an eviction notice because she owes thousands of dollars in rent. At that time, the cleaner said she was struggling to feed and clothe her three children, aged 17, nine, and eight, because her just over BDS$100 per week wage was barely helping her to make ends meet. The mother had admitted that she had been unable to pay her $800 monthly rent and other bills since the father of her two younger children, who signed the contract to rent the house, left days after they moved in on March 1, and had not been giving her any money to assist with running the household. “I just want to get out of here. You can’t wash no dishes, you can’t bathe, you can’t use the bathroom, the light turn off this morning. If I could have done better I wouldn’t be in this position. NHC saying they don’t have any house but people still going and getting help. I stressed and the children taking on the stress too,” Felix said. “Every minute them asking me ‘you get somewhere mummy? If you don’t get somewhere we will be on the road’. Every minute them peeping to see if the landlord coming to put us out. That ain’t good for these children. That could mash up them heart,” she added. When contacted this evening, an official who is familiar with Felix’s case said that her claims, as it relates to the Welfare Department, would be investigated as soon as possible. (BT)
BODY IDENTIFIED AS RAHIM WARD – A mother’s worst fear was realised today. Barbara Dorant-Layne broke down after identifying the body taken from a shallow grave at Walkers, St Andrew, this afternoon as that of her son Rahim Ward. The 22-year-old of Cottage Grove, St George, had been missing for a week, and police and Barbados Defence Force soldiers did the third search for him this morning in the rugged terrain near the St Andrew Parish Church. The body was discovered around 6 a.m. in a disturbed area, and just before 4 p.m., Dorant-Layne and other members of the family were allowed to view it. She was heard saying: “them killed my son; them killed Rahim”. His grandmother Virgene Ward, one of the last people to see him alive, and other family members, were also at the scene.(SS)
HOT HEAD IN TROUBLE OVER MESSAGE – On Thursday, Jason Renaldo Ashton declared his head was hot and that was why he told a man “what I had to tell him”. Yesterday, he railed at the “unfairness” meted out to him and declared: “I feel I gine kill myself.”Ashton was back in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday, after he appeared initially on Thursday. The 31-year-old, of Brittons Hill, St Michael, admitted he used a computer to send the electronic comment: “I want you to stop messaging my phone, you f****** idiot or let me come and pelt some bullets through your house,” on July 31, and he intended to cause or was reckless as to whether he caused annoyance, inconvenience and distress.(SS)
ST. JAMES MAN CHARGED WITH DRUG TRAFFICKING – Police executed a search warrant at the home of a St James man and discovered almost 250 cannabis plants growing. Members of the Drug Squad of the Royal Barbados Police Force arrested and charged Jerry Nathaniel Haynes, 47, of Halls Village No. 1 on Wednesday for possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and cultivation. They seized 243 plants ranging in height from one foot to six feet and loose quantities of cannabis were also dfound. The 32.9 kilogrammes of cannabis has an estimated street value of $131 600. (SS)
LEVI BACK ON TRACK – Levi Cadogan is aiming to make a stunning return to track and field after a two-year ban for doping. The Bajan Olympic sprinter resumed training on Wednesday after he was cleared earlier this year following a two-year ban.In 2017, the former Carifta Games silver medallist, who made his Olympic debut in Rio 2016, tested positive for the banned diuretic and masking pill furosemide. The National Anti-Doping Commission (NADC) initially ruled for Cadogan to be sidelined for 24 months but he appealed to the court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and his drug sanction was reduced to 20 as a first-time offender. (SS)
HOLDER STALLS INDIA – India captain Virat Kohli and opener Mayank Agarwal stroked half-centuries but West Indies skipper Jason Holder responded with a terrific display of pace bowling, as the home side shared honours on the opening day of the decisive second Test yesterday. Sent in at Sabina Park in excellent conditions, India reached the close on 264 for five, with Kohli top-scoring with 76 and Agarwal getting 55.Well placed on 157 for three at tea, India lost both Ajinkya Rahane (24) and Kohli inside the first hour following the resumption, but Hanuma Vihari carved out an unbeaten 42 and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, an unbeaten 27,  to deny West Indies any further success in the session in a crucial 62-run, unbroken sixth-wicket partnership.Low-keyed in the Antigua opening Test which West Indies lost by 318 runs inside four days last week, seamer Holder sprang to life in the humidity of the country’s capital with a haul of three for 39, including the prized wicket of Kohli. Timeform Highlights of 2018

Timeform Highlights of 2018 Please share.
Philip Spink – Glory days back for Godolphin With the Flat scene having been dominated by the Ballydoyle battalion in recent years it was refreshing to see Godolphin enjoy their best season for some time. Masar was the first horse to carry the famous silks to glory in the Derby under William Buick, one of twelve Group 1 wins worldwide for Charlie Appleby. The story of Cross Counter was even more remarkable as he became the first British-trained winner of the Melbourne Cup just eleven months on from a successful debut on a cold Saturday night at Wolverhampton. With the unbeaten Quorto, and the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Royal Meeting spearheading their Classic challenge in 2019, the future is looking rosy again for the boys in blue.
Michael Williamson – Betfair Ascot Chase Sometimes the forgotten Grade One on the UK calendar given its relative proximity to Cheltenham, but there was no missing the Ascot Chase in 2018. In a much stronger field than when he’d easily justified 9/4-on favouritism the year before, Cue Card was only joint fourth in the market, trading at 9/1, seemingly with the consensus his best days were behind him. Ruth Jefferson’s seven-year-old Waiting Patiently had a contrasting profile, and headed the betting; he was just the ninth runner sent out by Ruth Jefferson since her father Malcom – one of the most popular figures in the sport – had sadly just lost his long-term battle with illness. Despite competition for the lead, Cue Card gave his fans one final show of brilliance with a bold show from the front and, from two out, the comeback looked very much on. However, Waiting Patiently was to live up to his name with a brilliantly judged ride from Brian Hughes, for whom the loss of Jefferson hit understandably hard. Taking over just before the last having not climbed much above his BSP throughout, despite an uncharacteristic mistake, he powered clear to win by two and three quarter lengths with Cue Card going down fighting. As Hughes pointed to the sky with Cue Card being eased down in the background, you’d have to be made of stone to not have a lump in your throat.
Waiting Patiently wins a sensational @Ascot Chase under a brilliant ride from Brian Hughes, and how about that for an effort from Cue Card in second…what a race. Results ➡️ https://t.co/7iJOPsdIyZ pic.twitter.com/iP6ox3IRtd — Racing TV (@RacingTV) February 17, 2018
John Ingles – Winx for me Aidan O’Brien made history in 2014 when sending Adelaide down under to become the first European-trained horse to win Australia’s most prestigious weight-for-age race, the Cox Plate. A year later, another high-class three-year-old was sent from Ballydoyle on the same mission but Highland Reel came up against a filly who had already won a couple of Group 1 races by then but whose achievements since have earned her worldwide fame. Winx broke the track record when beating Highland Reel by more than five lengths into third and has won another 24 races on the bounce since then, including three more Cox Plates, her latest one taking her winning streak to 29. But for a visual highlight of the year, and a rather extreme example of what she does best, how about her Turnbull Stakes win at Flemington three weeks earlier? Ridden with supreme confidence from the rear by Hugh Bowman, Winx still had plenty to do after the leaders tried to kick on entering the straight but when Bowman shook the reins – that’s all it took – she quickened to lead with 50m to run and won with something in hand. It was never in doubt!  Simon Walker – Cheltenham Gold Cup Very occasionally, a race goes pretty much as you think it might, both in terms of the result and how it developed, too. The 2018 Gold Cup was one such race. A horse laid out for it and the perfect rider on board to execute the plan, Native River’s bold jumping and relentless galloping seen to maximum effect as Richard Johnson fully utilised his mount’s attributes, the testing ground bringing stamina even more into play than usual and Might Bite found wanting when it mattered having matched Native River jump for jump for so long, that pair really the only ones that mattered from a good way out despite the fact they didn’t actually open up a sizeable advantage over the rest. A truly magnificent race and a fine example of why jump racing enthrals people in a way that the Flat sometimes doesn’t.

Matt Gardner – Muntahaa in the Ebor The Ebor may not be the race it once was, typically made up of smart but exposed types these days, lacking the improving young handicappers of yesteryear, but in 2018 it saw a high-quality performance from Muntahaa. Winner of the Group 3 John Porter Stakes the year before, Muntahaa actually bettered that effort in defying a lofty handicap mark of 109, winning a competitive handicap by a surprisingly wide margin. Through the early stages of the race it didn’t look likely, Jim Crowley’s GPS appearing to have gone haywire as he charted an unusually wide course, but post-race it was all revealed to have been part of a grand plan to get the best out of Muntahaa, and it was a plan that paid off handsomely. An ambitious bid for Melbourne Cup glory didn’t come to fruition but Munthaa’s Ebor success, the best in the race this century on the Freebetalerts.com scale, stands out as a highlight among many from the summer.
Nic Doggett – Altior in the Champion Chase I backed Min for the 2018 Queen Mother Champion Chase. And coming down the hill I thought I’d won. Altior was under pressure, while Min was still firmly on the bridle, having come from further back in the field than his main rival. In fact, I was more worried about Ordinary World who was travelling powerfully on the outside. But – in the blink of an eye – Altior had won. It was that quick. He was behind jumping the second last, but by the time the jockeys had gathered themselves up after jumping the fence, he was in front. And there’s no catching Altior when he’s in front. The Freebetalerts.com report for the race says: Altior confirmed his status as the best 2m chaser around, arguably the best jumper of any description, with an ultimately totally dominant performance, even if it didn’t look all that likely 3 out, powering up the hill, just as he had when winning the 2016 Supreme and 2017 Arkle, the first coincidentally also by 7 lengths from Min. Though clearly very complimentary, it doesn’t really do Altior’s performance justice, especially considering the injury scare he’d suffered earlier in the week. While far from a punting highlight for me, Altior’s Champion Chase win was a real sporting triumph and a combination of guts and class from a supreme athlete; like Mo Farah winning 10,000m Gold in Rio when he was tripped, but with the style of Andrea Pirlo’s penalty against England in EURO 2012. Hopefully this time next year I’ll be able to nominate Altior’s winning performance in the 2019 King George VI Chase. If no-one can beat him over two miles, where he’s sometimes looked a little tapped for toe, who will stand a chance over three?

Nick Seddon – The New One It’s perhaps a little strange for a highlight of 2018 to arrive just 20 days into it, but this was a performance that typified a career which was creeping into its eighth, and ultimately final, year. He perhaps never quite sealed his place at the very top table, but The New One, who was retired earlier this month, enjoyed a stellar career, winning 17 races – 11 of those in graded company – and amassing over £1 million in prize money. His win in the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock in January, which proved to be his last, epitomized everything about The New One that had endeared him to everyone in the sport; he wasn’t at his best on the day, but his admirable will to win carried him through, out-battling Ch’tibello to seal his fourth win in the race in dogged and determined fashion.

NBA mock draft 2017: Markelle Fultz goes No. 1 to Magic in our final fake lottery
The lottery finally happens on Tuesday night.
It’s hard to remember a draft lottery with bigger ramifications than the one that will finally go down on Tuesday night. It’s the perfect storm of a talented class of players paired with a number of premier, big market franchises waiting to see where they’ll fall at the top of the draft order. After months of hype, we’re about to know the answer.
It feels like this draft gets more intriguing by the week. The breakout star of the weekend’s draft combine in Chicago was Hamidou Diallo, a 6’6 shooting guard who posted a vertical leap of 44.5 inches. Diallo enrolled at Kentucky for the second semester, but he hasn’t played a competitive game since high school in December. He’s entering the draft through the same loophole as Thon Maker. Diallo is this year’s mystery man, and it feels more and more like he’s a lock to be a first-round pick.
This is our final mock draft before the lottery drawing. Like previous mocks, we’re again randomizing the order using ESPN’s lottery simulator. For the first time, the Orlando Magic came out in the top spot.
1. Orlando Magic — Markelle Fultz, PG, Washington
It feels like Fultz is flying a little under the radar for a consensus No. 1 pick. He was a late bloomer as a recruit and didn’t play in many marquee college games for a 9-22 Washington Huskies team. Regardless, Fultz possesses everything an NBA team wants out a lead guard. There should be no debate that he’s the top pick.
The Magic desperately need this type of luck on Tuesday. Orlando has been a lottery staple since trading Dwight Howard in 2012, but players like Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton, Aaron Gordon, and Mario Hezonja failed to get the franchise out of its rut. Fultz would change everything, giving the Magic a future perennial All-Star in the backcourt for years to come.
2. Boston Celtics — Jayson Tatum, SF, Duke
The real debate in this draft starts at No. 2. Do you want a point guard with size, shooting, and incredible basketball IQ in Lonzo Ball? Do you want a do-it-all, two-way wing like Josh Jackson? In this mock, we’re picking Duke’s Jayson Tatum for one reason: the hardest thing to find in the NBA is go-to scoring, and Tatum can potentially provide just that.
Anyone who saw Tatum lead Duke to the ACC tournament championship knows how talented he is. He’s a three-level scorer with great size (6’8), masterful footwork, and a nice shooting touch. The biggest question might be his feel for the game: he finished with 76 turnovers to 62 assists in his lone year of college ball.
3. Los Angeles Lakers — Lonzo Ball, PG, UCLA
Lonzo Ball appears to be a seamless fit with the Lakers. He’d move D’Angelo Russell off the ball where he could focus more on scoring instead of distributing. He’d help Brandon Ingram unlock his potential on the wing. He’d also help crank up the pace and help recreate the ‘Showtime’ era in Los Angeles once again.
The Lakers are reportedly enamored with Ball. We know Ball and his famous father want to be in Los Angeles, too. The stakes are incredibly high for the Lakers heading into lottery night — this pick goes to the Sixers if it’s outside the top three — and the whole league is waiting to see how it plays out.
youtube
4. Phoenix Suns — Josh Jackson, SF, Kansas
Phoenix has a budding go-to scorer in 20-year-old shooting guard Devin Booker. It has one of the best point guards in the NBA in Eric Bledsoe. It has two former lottery picks in the front court in Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender. The only thing the Suns are missing is an athletic two-way wing. That’s why Josh Jackson is an ideal fit.
Jackson has drawn comparisons to a young Andre Iguodala. It’s not a perfect comp, but it’s easy to see the similarities. Like Iguodala, Jackson can handle and pass the ball, plays both ends of the court and will thrive in an up-tempo system. If his late season shooting surge is for real, he could be a future NBA All-Star.
5. Philadelphia 76ers — Malik Monk, SG, Kentucky
The Sixers have a pair of franchise players in the frontcourt in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. They enter this draft needing guards and wings who can shoot. Monk looks like an obvious fit on paper.
Monk is one of the most explosive scorers John Calipari has ever coached. He can fill it up from three-point range and also has the athleticism to get up-and-down with Simmons in transition. A player like Jonathan Isaac might offer more two-way upside, but he looks more like a power forward than a wing. Philadelphia can’t afford to keep stockpiling players at the same position. Monk could be special next to Simmons.
6. Minnesota Timberwolves — Jonathan Isaac, F, Florida State
Isaac is all tools and upside. At 6’10, he has the foot speed to guard on the perimeter and also hit 35 percent of his three-pointers in his freshman season at Florida State. In Minnesota, he could slide right in at the four between Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. If Isaac reaches his ceiling, this will be the last lottery pick Minnesota needs for a long time.
7. New York Knicks — De’Aaron Fox, PG, Kentucky
Fox has good size, elite speed and a knack for scoring around the basket. He waxed Lonzo Ball and UCLA in the Sweet 16 to the tune of 39 points on 20 shots. His jump shot remains the big question, but there’s still so much to like about his game.
youtube
8. Sacramento Kings — Dennis Smith Jr., PG, NC State
In a different year, Smith might have been a top-three pick. He’s a strong, explosive point guard who can make plays off the bounce and finish above the rim. His freshman season at NC State didn’t go as planned — the Wolfpack finished only 15-17 and missed the NCAA tournament — but there’s no denying his talent.
9. Dallas Mavericks — Lauri Markkanen, PF, Arizona
Markkanen is a sweet-shooting 7-footer with a quick release and deep range. He canned 69 threes at a 42 percent clip as a freshman at Arizona. In Dallas, he’d be Dirk Nowitzki’s understudy and heir apparent. That’s a lot to live up to for any young player, but Markkanen would do well to study under the legend if given the opportunity.
10. Sacramento Kings — Hamidou Diallo, SG, Kentucky
Diallo is essentially coming straight out of high school. He’s currently projected as the No. 35 pick on DraftExpress. If he gets picked in the top 10, it’s going to be considered a reach. Then again, people said the same thing when the Bucks took Thon Maker at No. 10 last season and he ended up playing valuable playoff minutes as a rookie.
The Kings addressed their need for a point guard with their first pick. They have a young shooting guard they love in Buddy Hield and a trio front court trio with Willie Cauley-Stein, Skal Labissiere, and Georgios Papagiannis. What Sacramento really needs is a two-way wing. Diallo won’t be ready to contribute right away, but he has all the physical tools to get there eventually. The door is still open for Diallo to return to Kentucky, but his athletic testing at the combine was so impressive that it seems likely he’ll stay in. He is this draft’s lottery ticket.
youtube
11. Charlotte Hornets — Frank Ntilikina, G, France
With long arms and a nice shooting stroke, Ntilikina projects as a three-and-D point guard a la George Hill. Still only 18 years old, playing in Charlotte alongside Kemba Walker would give him plenty of time to develop.
12. Detroit Pistons — Luke Kennard, SG, Duke
Here’s another surprise pick: Kennard sneaking into the lottery by jumping players like Zach Collins, Justin Jackson, and Jarrett Allen. We know Stan Van Gundy loves shooters, and Kennard fits the bill there. He also has sneaky potential as a pick-and-roll ball handler after posting impressive numbers on those plays in his sophomore year at Duke. More than anything, Kennard is a pure scorer who would give Detroit even more spacing around Andre Drummond.
13. Denver Nuggets — OG Anunoby, F, Indiana
I love the fit of Anunoby to Denver. The Nuggets need a strong defensive presence next to Nikola Jokic in frontcourt. Anunoby has more defensive upside than anyone in the draft. With a strong frame, long arms, and explosive leaping ability, he’s worth the wait for Denver even after tearing his ACL in January.
14. Miami Heat — Zach Collins, C, Gonzaga
Collins became Gonzaga’s first-ever McDonald’s All-American. Now he’s its first-ever one-and-done. The 7-footer is a shot blocker on defense and combines a developing post-game with a face-up jumper on offense. At the draft combine, he said he has always modeled his game after Tim Duncan. Good pick, young man.
15. Portland Trail Blazers — Jarrett Allen, C, Texas
The Blazers found a quality young center at midseason with the addition of Jusuf Nurkic. Allen would give them a different look in the frontcourt: he’s faster, longer, and more explosive. It might take Allen a couple years to develop, but his physical tools are worthy of a top-15 pick.
16. Chicago Bulls — Justin Jackson, SF, North Carolina
The Bulls love college veterans from marquee programs who won big and show improvement. It worked with Joakim Noah, didn’t work with Doug McDermott and remains to be seen with Denzel Valentine. Justin Jackson fits the mold after leading UNC to a national championship in his junior season. If he still on the board, it would be surprising to see Chicago pass on him.
17. Milwaukee Bucks — Terrance Ferguson, SG, Adelaide (NBL)
Ferguson looks like a terrific prospect on paper. He has great size for a shooting guard at 6’7, ridiculous athletic ability, and solid three-point stroke. Still, he’s something of a mystery man because he chose to spend last season playing professionally in Australia rather than honoring his commitment to Arizona. He reminds me of Ben McLemore or Terrence Ross — the tools are there, but the production still seems a bit off.
18. Indiana Pacers — Donovan Mitchell, G, Louisville
Mitchell was another big winner from the combine. He measured 6’3 with a 6’10 wingspan, minimal body fat and a 40-inch vertical leap. He projects as a guard who can defend either ones or twos and raise a team’s athletic floor while his skill shooting and handling the ball develops. The Pacers could use another two-way guard to build with.
19. Atlanta Hawks — Justin Patton, C, Creighton
The Hawks took two wings in the first round last year. They appear to be committed to Dennis Schroeder at point guard moving forward. One thing they could use is a young big man to groom behind Dwight Howard. Patton fits the bill as an athletic 19-year-old big who runs the floor and doesn’t miss around the hoop.
20. Portland Trail Blazers — T.J. Leaf, PF, UCLA
The Blazers have two athletic, versatile defenders in the frontcourt in Al-Farouq Aminu and Moe Harkless. They could use some shooting. Leaf would be perfect if he lasts this long. He hit 46.6 percent of the 58 threes he attempted as a freshman at UCLA.
21. Oklahoma City Thunder — Tyler Lydon, PF, Syracuse
The Thunder need to open up the floor for Russell Westbrook with shooters in the front court. Lydon hit 40 percent of his threes over two years at Syracuse.
22. Brooklyn Nets — Harry Giles, C, Duke
There’s an alternate reality somewhere where the Nets keep their own No. 1 draft pick and use it to select a healthy Harry Giles. That’s the trajectory Giles was on as a former top recruit before having his three knee produce at Duke. If he can get and stay healthy, Brooklyn could hit the jackpot with this pick.
23. Toronto Raptors — John Collins, PF, Wake Forest
Collins doesn’t have much shooting range and struggles to protect the rim. So, why is he a first-rounder? It’s because he has great touch around the rim and cleans the glass on both ends of the court. He could be a major offensive weapon if he stretches that jump shot out a bit.
24. Utah Jazz — Frank Jackson, G, Duke
Jackson was a star at Utah’s Lone Peak High School before heading to Duke and getting lost behind Jayson Tatum, Luke Kennard, and Grayson Allen. When he did get an opportunity, he proved he was an athletic, attacking guard with developing shooting range. Jackson announced he was staying in the draft for good last week. No one better to take a chance on him than the hometown team.

25. Orlando Magic — Ike Anigbogu, C, UCLA
Anigbogu measured at 6’10, 252 pounds with a 7’6 wingspan at the combine. He projects as a rim protecting big who can catch lobs off the pick-and-roll on offense.
26. Portland Trail Blazers — Derrick White, G, Colorado
White was a DII player before transferring to Colorado for his senior year blossoming into one of the best scorers in the Pac-12. He’s blown up during the pre-draft process, first at the Portsmouth Invitational and then with a solid showing at the combine. He doesn’t have many holes in his skill set on the offensive end and tested well enough athletically to possibly sneak into the first round. He’s worth a shot for a Blazers team with three first rounders.
27. Brooklyn Nets — Rodions Kurucs, SF, Latvia
A 6’8 shooter from Latvia. Here, watch some highlights:

28. Los Angeles Lakers — DJ Wilson, F, Michigan
Wilson couldn’t compete at the draft combine because of a quad injury he sustained during a workout with the Spurs. That’s a shame because he could have really helped himself by testing well athletically and showing off his three-point shot in the full court run. He could still pull out of the draft, but there’s enough to like about his game — length, shooting, shot blocking — for some team to take him in Round 1.
29. San Antonio Spurs — Jonathan Jeanne, C, France
DraftExpress called Jeanne “arguably the biggest winner” at the combine. Here’s more:
Despite being one of the youngest players to compete at the five on five, Jeanne showed a level of craftiness and budding skill that is extremely intriguing considering his youth (19 years old) and physical tools. He measured 7'2 in shoes, with a 7'6 ½ wingspan and 9'5 ½ standing reach that put him in elite company relative to NBA players, and is also highly fluid and mobile on top of that. While still painfully thin at just 207 pounds, Jeanne has added 20 pounds to his frame in the past year, and will undoubtedly continue to fill out in time.
30. Utah Jazz — Caleb Swanigan, PF, Purdue
Swanigan led the country in double-doubles as a sophomore at Purdue. He also showed shocking improvement as a three-point shooter, canning 38 triples at a 44.7 percent clip. His ability to defend the pick-and-roll is his big question mark.
