What I’ve been reading.. February/March 📚

I’ve been reading significantly less since returning to work full time. I’ve been tending to listen to podcasts on my train commute and that’s really the only block of time I have to listen to books (or anything else) aside from getting up at night to nurse the baby back to sleep (which thankfully has been less and less lately).

Jell-o Girls: I tend to disagree with reviews stating it was a “gorgeous” memoir. I wanted to love it, but I also think I wanted it to be more about the Jell-o corporation and the corruption within it, and less about the author and her personal family dynamics.

Pretty Girls was good. Not fantastic, but good. Maybe a bit predictable? Worth the read though.

The two bird-related books were fabulous, especially How to Know the Birds. I know no one here will want to read it and I’m totally good with that, but I loved it so much. Super dry and chock full of great info. 🤓

American Predator was the best true crime I’ve read in a long time. I’m still thinking about that book and I read it weeks ago. It was haunting. It felt like you got more of a peek behind the investigative curtain than you typically would in a true crime book. Incredibly well done.

Currently reading The Mystery Guest which is just as enjoyable as the first book in the series (The Maid). Really fun and quirky.

Persalinan Pertama

Menjelang Ramadhan 1445 H aku jadi teringat dengan suatu peristiwa di Ramadhan tahun lalu yaitu menanti HPL dan pengalaman melahirkan kali pertama di kehamilan yang pertama. MaasyaAllah wal hamdulillah, tak henti bersyukur atas segala kemudahan yang Allah berikan pada kami yang tak pernah disangka sebelumnya. Dari sekian banyak perjalanan kehidupan, rasanya pengalaman persalinan inilah yang paling aku ingat dan syukuri.

Pertama, karena ini merupakan hal besar yang kulalui yang mana mengubah duniaku dan bertambah peran sebagai ibu.

Kedua, aku sadar ketika membuat banyak rencana untuk persalinan tapi rencana Allah jauh lebih baik dan sangat indah yang tak pernah terbayangkan sebelumnya.

Di sini aku ingin mengucap syukur lagi dan lagi atas apa yang terjadi kala itu. Allah segalanya. Allah yang kuatkan dan mudahkan. Allah pula yang lancarkan prosesnya.

Jika diingat kembali, indah sekali setiap detik rencanaNya. Oh Allah, segala puja dan puji hanya bagiMu.

Hari perkiraan lahirku saat itu adalah 9 April 2023 dan bersyukurnya adik bayi lahir pada 6 April 2023. Terhitung 39 minggu 4 hari. 3 hari lebih cepat.

Tanda persalinan ada 3 di antaranya keluar flek darah, ketuban pecah, dan kontraksi teratur. Diantara ketiganya yang menjadi kunci adalah kontraksi yang teratur dengan jarak dekat. Namun jika didapati keluarnya flek darah atau ketubah pecah maka harus tetap diperhatikan. Qadarullah, H-2 aku keluar flek darah. Pastilah panik tapi tetap harus tenang dan selalu kupantau apakah ia keluar terus menerus ataukah sesekali.

H-1 barulah aku menuju ke rumah sakit untuk dicek apakah sudah ada pembukaan atau belum karena ternyata darahnya masih keluar. Harap-harap cemas setibanya aku di rumah sakit. Ada harapan bahwa sudah ada pembukaan bersamaan juga dengan cemas karena akan melahirkan. Ternyata nihil. Belum ada pembukaan sama sekali. Aku dan suamikupun akhirnya kembali pulang padahal kami ke rumah sakit telah membawa hospital bag untuk jaga-jaga apabila langsung menginap. Karena ini pengalaman pertama, saran dari dokter adalah pantau kontraksi teratur dan sering. Aku pun dibantu salah satu aplikasi penghitung kontraksi agar memudahkan.

Hingga tengah malam aku merasakan sakit yang tak tertahan dan mengganggu tidurku. Akhirnya aku memutuskan untuk tidur sambil duduk dengan terus menghitung kontraksi. Berhubung di hari itu suami ada jadwal kuliah, aku yang sebelumnya sempat memintanya untuk masuk akhirnya di pagi hari aku memintanya untuk menemaniku. Sekitar pukul 08.00 aku hendak bersiap-siap menuju rumah sakit karena kontraksinya dirasa sudah teratur dan sering. Lalu, aku menuju ke kamar mandi untuk buang air kecil. Tiba-tiba ketuban pecah. Panik, bingung, dan sakit bercampur jadi satu. Aku langsung terduduk di kamar mandi sambil menahan rasa ingin mengejan. Aku sama sekali tidak tahu apa yang harus dilakukan. Aku juga tidak tahu sudah pembukaan berapa dan apakah diperbolehkan mengejan. Di kamar mandi aku hanya bisa mengatur nafas dan mengeluh kesakitan karena tidak tahan ingin mengejan. Aku ditemani ibuku sambil dzikir dan doa sampai abai bahwa kami sedang di kamar mandi. Sedangkan suami bersegera mencari bidan untuk dibawa ke rumah. Alhamdulillah, dipertemukan dengan rombongan bidan dan dokter dari puskesmas berjumlah 5 orang dengan mobil ambulancenya. Tiba-tiba saja aku mampu untuk berdiri dari duduk. Tindakan persalinan pun dilakukan di ruang tamu.

MaasyaAllah wal hamdulillah. Sama sekali tidak pernah ada dalam bayangan untuk melahirkan di rumah. Tapi ternyata Allah ijinkan aku untuk merasakan itu. Bahkan setiap detiknya terasa rapi sekali.

Allah adalah perencana terbaik hidup hambaNya.

Grian and Gem rescued the Tan-Snails, little-G and Ladypink from Scar's revenge, the Snails took a break from pranking to see the eclipse and for some Rest and Relaxation. \Sun 21042024\

Lore:

HC! Snails are a family of gastropods from the planet Exraterra. Snails are born in terrarium nests surrounded by their parents and their escargotiore (clan);

When Snails are old enough some choose to leave in little meteorite space ships to find humanoids to become their adopters, these escargotiores are called walks (Grian lore and my interpretation);

They grow strong mutual bonds by imprinting (like Pokémon & Trainer "friendship");

Snails love annoying their adopter's friends, I believe this is because they can get attached to people really easily, but they use it as a form of reconn for the safety of their siblings (Grian's lore and also who wouldn't get attached to the hermits);

It has been documented that little-G likes to eat buildings, materials include: rock types. (Gem's lighthouse);

They eat their meteorites, this is so their shells are soft and bouncy for when they land, after eating their meteorites their shells become hard.

Snails have the power to make duplicate illusions. But evidence is insufficient, documented once (little-G seen at Gem's lighthouse and Doc's swamp at the same time);

Little-G can teleport instantly if broken (When Grian broke them free from Gem's raft);

Snails can build very rudimentary things (Grian, Gem and Scar's stories);

Larry Jr was a Mega Giant Snail, built by Ladypink and little-G to prank Scar, They spilt into tons of little Tan-Snails and replaced Scar's train wheels, Scar took revenge by trying to make little-G and Ladypink roast them into eSCARgo.

Snails can be moved, we haven't been able to determine if this can be done by luring as well from picking them up, we believe it's mostly by picking them up due to the lack of a trail (Gem moving little-G from her lighthouse to her raft and when Gem rescued Ladypink. Grian has also picked up little-G multiple times);

bike ride to the gym

6 hours lifeguard work

bike ride to Kroger and then home

the gym workers and lifeguards received Hershey kisses

work started out slow but was busy mid shift. the swim team was practicing and a water aerobic class was going and there was a water safety instructor class and then 5 kids playing in the small pool. close to 50 people in the water for awhile. i was on one stand and another lifeguard on another stand for swimmer surveillance

mowed the yard this afternoon with mother in law's riding mower. not a physical work out at all. the mosquitoes are terrible. the mosquito control folks say that is due to the drought last summer killing off some small fish that eat mosquito larva

bottom = hardly any traffic on my bike ride to work at 430am
