Maryland: la tragedia del ponte crollato a Baltimora
A Baltimora, nel Maryland, il Francis Scott Key Bridge sul fiume Patapsco, è crollato dopo l'impatto con una nave cargo. Il bilancio, al momento, è di 1 morto e 6 dispersi. Il governatore del Maryland, Wes Moore, ha dichiarato lo stato di emergenza. Il ponte era attivo da quasi cinquant'anni.
Baltimora nel Maryland: cos'è accaduto
Nella notte tra il 25 e il 26 marzo, la nave cargo Dali battente bandiera di Singapore e diretta a Colombo nello Sri Lanka, ha lasciato il porto di Baltimora. Poco dopo la partenza, avvenuta alle 01.00 circa, il comandante si è accorto che il mercantile stava perdendo propulsione. Ciò significa che stava perdendo il controllo dell'imbarcazione e che era possibile lo scontro con un pilone del ponte Francis Scott. Secondo i media locali, la nave avrebbe avvertito le autorità locali del pericolo lanciando un may day. Alle 01.24 la nave accusa una perdita di corrente ed emette del fumo nero. Pochi minuti dopo, alle 01.28, si schianta contro un pilone del ponte. Secondo le immagini diffuse, dopo il crollo del pilone, la struttura del ponte ha ceduto pezzo dopo pezzo per un lungo tratto.
I membri dell'equipaggio della nave cargo non hanno riportato ferite mentre sul ponte, al momento del crollo, sembra ci fossero una ventina di mezzi e sei operai intenti a riparare delle buche sul manto stradale. Gli operari risultano dispersi anche se si presume non possano essere sopravvissuti all'impatto con l'acqua gelata.
Il Francis Scott Key Bridge
Il Francis Scott Key Bridge fu inaugurato nel 1977 dopo cinque anni di lavori. La sua struttura, a travata continua ad arco, realizzata in acciaio, attraversava il fiume Patapsco, e il porto di Baltimora, per una lunghezza di 2.632 metri. Era il terzo attraversamento a pedaggio sul fiume all'interno del porto di Baltimora, dopo un altro ponte e un tunnel, e ospitava gli ultimi collegamenti della Interstate 695, la "Baltimore Beltway". Ponte più lungo della città, la campata principale era lunga 366 m ed era la terza più lunga al mondo tra quelle a travata continua. Prima del crollo era attraversato da circa 11,5 milioni di veicoli all'anno.
Il fiume Patapsco
Il ponte crollato è intitolato a Francis Scott Key, autore del poema The Star-Spangled Banner, dal quale furono tratte le parole dell'inno nazionale americano. Key lo compose proprio nella zona della foce del Patapsco nella battaglia di Baltimora, combattuta durante la guerra anglo-americana del 1812.
Il fiume Patapsco è parte integrante della città di Baltimora. Nasce dalla confluenza di due corsi d'acqua vicino Marriottsville, cittadina a circa 25 chilometri a ovest di Baltimora. Il suo percorso si snoda per lo più lungo una stretta valle e non è navigabile mentre nella zona della Baia di Chesapeake forma un largo estuario. E' all'interno dell'estuario che è stato realizzato il porto di Baltimora.
