Regarding that post on malaprops (and the corrections) you made some additions to a few days back: there's one I've never been sure on - heard it on the radio today, which sparked the thought of running it by someone with far more experience in the proper use of words than I...
"vary widely" and "vary wildly"
I would imagine "widely" is the original usage... but I'm not sure it makes a difference? Swinging from one extreme to another could be described as varying "wildly".
What do you think? Is only one the correct usage? Are they both correct, but in different contexts? Or is this an occasion where it really is a difference that makes no difference, and both are valid alternatives in the same situation?
Thank you!
My sense is that these could be used interchangeably (and probably are, a whole lot) if/when the writer's not paying attention to the meanings of the specific adverbs.
I would use "varies widely" for "(in common usage) gets used a lot of different ways, across a broad spectrum of meaning or contexts (or whatever else)". I'd use "varies wildly" for " turns up in all kinds of different forms without rhyme or reason -- without the variation making any particular kind of sense."
More than this, deponent saith not. :)
HTH!

My baby-daddy included it in a translation he's working on, and the rest of us were like, "Nobody knows what that means," and he was like "Everybody knows what that means!"
We're Canadian, but his mother was British. Is it a British thing? Put in the tags where you're from!
