I was tagged by @stanfordsweater for this getting to know you game. Thanks so much for the tag! 😊💕 There’s a clean copy at the end for people who want to do this.

1. why did you choose your url?

It was already my user name on AO3 (and maybe some other sites, can't recall) and I wanted consistency across platforms (since I joined tumblr for fandom). And here's the pretentious part: if you didn't know, it's a reference to Hamlet, which is one of my favorite written works ever. Elsinore is the name of the castle where it takes place, so the prince of Elsinore is Hamlet ^^;

2. any sideblogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.

I have two, though I'm not gonna name them lol (they're not exactly secret but they're old news). When I first joined I wanted my main to be not totally fandom-dominated (whoops so much for that) so I made a side blog for my main fandom at the time (Hetalia), where I now reblog fanart every once in a blue moon. And I made another side blog for my fic. I still occasionally post on the fic blog but since my main is now basically completely spn anyway, I've just been posting my spn fic on main.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

Since... 2012, I think? But not consistently. I hadn't used tumblr much in years before last fall and even considered deleting my blog multiple times, but spn ending (and the pandemic) brought me back stronger than ever ^^;

4. do you have a queue tag?

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

If only I could remember... Well, it was for fandom (mostly--also some history blogging) but I don't remember the specific impetus. As mentioned my main fandom was Hetalia at the time, and within that mostly German bros stuff. I also distinctly remember lurking on a lot of Sherlock blogs prior to joining 😬(my how tastes things change)

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

It's a Leyendecker illustration! I love his work so so much (so many dapper men, so much homoeroticism 👌). The piece is Easter-themed and I don't actually know why I chose it. This fop is a far cry from his usual suave dudes, but idk, I guess I liked how ott and fancy it is. It also matched the old flowery aesthetic of my blog before I changed the theme.

7. why did you choose your header?

Lol ok so that's a photo I took (on my first visit maybe?) at Sans Souci palace in Potsdam, Germany. It was the residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, who--as anyone will know if they remember my blog days of yore--is my favorite historical figure! The glove is not mine. I found it like that :)

8. what’s your post with the most notes?

As I suspected, this one I made defending Jared's "controversial" comments post-finale. Sort of funny because I'm not even a Jared stan 🤷‍♂️

9. how many mutuals do you have?

No idea

10. how many followers do you have?

Just passed 550, which I know isn't many relatively speaking but wow I certainly never expected to see the day! I've gained about 300 followers since I started posting about spn, which utterly baffles me, but hey I'm glad if you guys are enjoying yourselves!

11. how many people do you follow?

Oh, wow, I just looked and it's over 1,000 😳 I guess b/c over the years I've gone on multiple following sprees and only unfollow if people really really annoy me or if I just get really tired of their content (I do continue to follow a lot of people who post about fandoms I'm not in). I feel like I usually see the same <50 blogs on my dash, though, so I'm guessing about 900 of the blogs I follow must be completely inactive lol.

12. have you ever made a shitpost?

Yes 🙃

13. how often do you use tumblr each day?

Varies. Over the past months I would check it every hour or more, felt like (not v conducive to getting work done orz). Recently (due to being away from my computer more often, now that the semester and my old job are finished) only a couple times a day, mostly at night.

14. did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? who won?

Hm, not really. Nothing more than a couple snarky or passive-aggressive asks, and not for years (aside from that anon anti hate I got sort of recently--my first ever! I would say I win that one by default, y'know, just for not being the person sending anon hate). I did get into a pretty drawn-out debate with a Dean stan about Dean's death and Jared's comments on it--see above--but I wouldn't classify it as an argument.

15. how do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts?

Very Tired and skeptical

16. do you like tag games?

Yes they're great! Always make me smile (even if I don't participate I always appreciate the tag!) 😊

17. do you like ask games?

Yes, although I have to be careful about posting them because while I love getting asks in theory, getting them means I have to answer them! And I tend to be very slow at that because I want to put so much thought into it! (Send me asks any time, really! Might just take me forever to respond ^^;) ((Oh gosh this reminds me I still never finished some headcanon asks I got aaages ago. Maybe someday...))

18. which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?

I don't have a good sense of what constitutes tumblr famous. My fave blogs are all stars in my eyes 🤩😇

19. do you have a crush on a mutual?

Haha no. Maybe with a few I just have a little cherished hope that they think I'm cool and smart 🥺

Get To Know You

I was tagged by @optomisticgirl Thank you! I really enjoyed reading your answers to these. I love learning knew things about my mutuals.

1. Why did you choose your url?

Well, it was already my url on Ao3, and luckily, it wasn’t taken yet. The reason behind it is actually something I was talking about in a discord chat the other day. I was obsessed as a kid with stories about finding secret passages, doors, and portals to other worlds. (The Narnia books, The Secret Garden, Alice in Wonderland, stuff like that.) My grandmother, we called her MoMo because it’s the South and we call our grandparents crazy things, lived in a really old house. It was fun to explore it, especially the wardrobes (because like most old houses, hers didn’t have closets). Another time, we (me, my sister, and my cousins) decided to dig a hole to Wonderland in MoMo’s yard with sand shovels. When she caught us, we thought we were in trouble, but she just went and got her garden shovel and said, “here, this will work better.” That’s one of my favorite memories of her.

Anyways, so that’s where I got my url from. As it says on my Ao3 account, “If I keep searching wardrobes, maybe one day I’ll find Narnia.” It seemed fitting for writing fanfic about a fantasy tv show.

Ummm . . . hold on a sec, let me check . . . Since 2018.

No. I’ve noticed people have them, and I’m probably going to sound stupid asking this but: Why do you need one? Tumblr really needs a user manual or something. I feel like you just learn stuff by accident on here.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?

@teamhook kept bugging me to on Ao3, haha. I also found out that a story I wrote was nominated for a fanfic award, but I didn’t know until after voting was over because I wasn’t on tumblr. And it felt like everyone knew everyone else in the CS fandom except for me, so finally I caved and started my blog. I was a little late to the party, but oh well. It’s been fun nevertheless!

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

Shameless self promotion, lol. It’s the cover of my second self-published novel. It’s also really pretty (I didn’t design it, so I can say that!)

7. Why did you choose your header?

My husband bought me a journal that said “Dreamer, Writer, Storyteller,” and I loved that! So first, my header was a just a photo of the journal’s cover. Then I noticed you could make tumblr headers on Canva, so I made one. I look nothing like that girl running (I wish!), but the colors fit with my icon. She also reminds me of Chloe, the main character in my first novel, and Emma Swan, so . . . it works? Canva’s tumblr headers aren’t really sized right, however, so there’s annoying white space on either side if you’re in desktop mode. Canva needs to fix that! Otherwise, I love the way it looks.

8. What’s your post with the most notes?

How the heck do you figure THAT out? I seriously looked through my stats, and I can not for the life of me see where it tells me this information. So yeah, I have no idea.

9. How many mutuals do you have?

Uhh, again, how do I know this without scrolling through everything? I swear, people know how to do stuff on this site that I am clueless about still after four years. Remember what I said about needing a manual?

I have erased my answer to this four times, if that tells you anything! Yeah, I don’t like those.

1. why did you choose your url?

i wanted something sangyeon related so i saved a few urls and ended up choosing the one i liked best, which meant i had to drop the def i had in it for two years haha 🙃

2. any side blogs? if you have them name them and why you have them.

oh, i've tried but it's just not something i can be consistent with. i enjoy having a mix of everything i like in here, even though this is first and foremost a kpop blog. i just don't like to limit myself or feel like i have log in a different blog to rb an aesthetic picture or a quote.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

i made my first tumblr back in 2011, and i don't even know what the url was anymore. i remade a million times and was pretty active in my cinema blog until i dropped the whole content making thing and came back in 2019 with defsenses, which now has turned into my baby sangyus 💗

4. do you have a queue tag?

i don't. i don't queue often, either. i'm more of a "reblogs when she's online" kind of girl.

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

i wanted to be active in the fandoms i was in and i never really vibed with twitter culture. i also wanted to make content again, and tumblr has always been my favorite platform.

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

because jae is my guy, my favorite kpop boy ever regardless of who i ult. does that make sense? it makes sense to me. he's just that special.

7. why did you choose your header?

because i finally have an ult line and i wanted everyone in it to be part of my header. i also wanted to have that quote from boys somwhere in my blog lmao.

my got7 and seventeen netflix series.

i don't know the exact number, but a lot of wonderful people who i love a lot.

i don't count at all. if i'm bored and creating content for it, then i can spend a few hours on here. if i'm too busy with work and life, then maybe like 10 mins before bed.

1. why did you choose your url?

Well one of the bad guys’ catchphrases in Spiderman PS4 when they fight Spidey is “that’s gonna leave a mark“ and I thought it was very fitting. I know it’s a common phrase outside of that too but I really like it that way.

2. any side-blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.

this is a sideblog, unfortunately tbh. I wish I could send asks/reply from this blog. My main blog is @sephs-ghost where i mostly reblog art and aesthetic stuff and I also got @mortal-ghost for my music stuff that I pretty much never post on and @ghostesques for my photography that I haven’t posted on in probably years. I’m way more active on Instagram for that stuff. can you tell i like ghosts?

oh damn i just checked on tumblr stats and my first blog was created in november 2012. i was 13 what was i doing on here. this blog was made in december 2018 i think.

why did you choose your url?

I was on the Voltron Amino and ended up doing an art collab. Most of the others were on Tumblr, and since I didn’t have one I just created one to be tagged in the collab. I RP’d Coran all the time and had basically been going by that name as I do now on occasion. Coran was my man. @/corancoranthegorgeousman was taken (by a rocking blogger who I don’t think is a mutual so I shan’t at) and so I think it was @robbingroses (a wonderful person and artist) who actually made the suggestion that stuck.

As mentioned before, used to be heavy into RP’ing whilst I was in the Voltron fandom, so I’ve got a bunch in relation to that. I also have two URLs that I really like saved, but I could never switch from being the magical man.

Early 2018? Or something? That’s how long I’ve had my own account. Been stalking Tumblr since at least 2012.

I do despite not knowing how they work! The tag is ‘cqueue’, a play on words of my AO3 username CBlue.

why did you start your blog in the first place?

As I’ve already lore dropped (whoops), I did it because of an art collab! Made sense to do it since I was already snooping all over the platform, and then just slowly migrated from the Amino based community to here. Now I’m stuck in Turbo Hell.

Currently? Because it’s a recent art and I’m trying to convince myself I’m an artist. I’m going to be changing it soon though, haha.

I used to be normal. Then who the hell knows went on a hunting trip and the finale happened and now I’m here daily. I get my global news through tumblr memes, though. Like the morning paper.

did you have a fight/argument with a blog once? who won?

I mean yes and no? I’ve butted heads and narrowly avoided getting into heated back and forths, but I think I back off before it escalates into arguments or fights. I don’t get involved in that stuff anymore. Like, if people just get too negative for me or if they’re aggressive to me, I unfollow and block. I don’t have time to stress over fighting with someone in a space where I come to relax and have fun. I’ve got enough in my real world life with my real world consequences without debating on whether or not I should tag that post with John Winchester only for you to also tag it with John Winchester when you rebloggeed it from me. This is my good times space, so I don’t want to taint that with arguing and fighting.

That being said, maybe this just means I’m the loser in fights because I refuse to fight.

how do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this post’?

I think it’s terrible. I love informative posts. I love spreading information about important causes and even just different cultural things. But I cannot stand the anxiety-inducing pressure to reblog every little burning fire and asshole-CEO exposure or else I’m a terrible person. As mentioned before, I come here to relax. I know I said I get my global news through Tumblr memes, but I also try to stay strictly to the fandom side of blogging. Unless it’s a ‘cause that moves me enough to overlook the “you need to reblog this”, I hate facilitating that culture that I know causes people stress and anxiety.

do you like tag games?

Yeah! But I always feel bad because I’m terrible at tagging other people? Like what is a mutual? Is it a spiritual mutual? We follow each other but how active are we in each other’s notifs? Do they recognize my name like I recognize theirs?

So I just crumble and die.

do you like ask games?

Yeah I do! I’ve got a few asks from ask games still burning in my inbox. They’re only so late because I lost my computer for a bit like two months back when I kind of had the free time to answer them. Now the answers are slowly getting drafted so I can post them an awkward amount of time later and I hate it lol

Role Club Engineers: Worth the Wait?

Introduction (Part I): History of Engineer Boots

Engineer boots are definitely a polarizing style of footwear within the heritage/amekaji boot community. For one, they utilize an ankle strap for fastening in lieu of laces, and second, their tall stovepipe shafts don’t integrate quite well with the slim tapered esthetic of modern denim/trousers. While often associated with motorcycles and bikers, engineer boots were actually designed as protective gear for firemen working on railway engines back in the 1930s. (Hence the name “engineers.”) Their minimal design and use of buckles over laces made them ideal for this line of work. The tall shafts provided protection for the lower leg, while the slip-on design allowed for quick removal should anything dangerous (such as hot coals or embers) slip down the shaft into the boot. This style of footwear lost some popularity following the introduction of lace-up combat boots during World War II, but would later be picked up by motorcyclists who found use of their insulating and protective features. (And there is your history lesson for the day, courtesy of Wikipedia. Lol)

Introduction (Part II): How I Got into Engineer Boots

I first got into more well-made boots back in early 2019. Like most boot n3wbs, I was completely infatuated by that lace-up service boot esthetic, and insisted on wearing them with the slimmest, most tapered denim I could find. My first boot purchase was (of course) a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers, followed by three pairs of Truman service boots in pretty quick succession. That first summer was when I discovered @brianthebootmaker on Instagram and YouTube, and instantly fell in love with his Underdog design, which I later purchased in August 2019 and received in May 2020.

At that point in time, Brian’s popular Underdog boots fit perfectly within my slim service boot style. However, Brian’s most iconic boot pattern was (and is) definitely his engineer boots. I admit I wasn’t sold on them at first, but I was intrigued. Did they fit my wardrobe at all? Nope. Would they even fit under the 6.75” leg openings of my PBJ denim? LOL nah. Nevertheless, I found myself constantly going back to Brian’s Instagram page and browsing all the photos of his engineer boots. Eventually, I grew to really love the look of engineer boots, ultimately placing a second deposit with Brian for a pair of engineers in October 2019. I had no idea how I was going to fit them into my wardrobe, but I figured I’d make it work somehow. (Luckily, since then my denim preferences have actually shifted toward more relaxed cuts, just in time for the arrival of these engineers.)

The Ordering Process

For most customers purchasing online, Brian requires you to take a set of measurements on your own feet, which he uses to build your boots remotely. However, those lucky enough to live nearby can actually visit Brian’s shop in LA to be personally measured by the boot maker himself, as well as discuss any details or questions you have regarding your specific makeup. I was one of these lucky people who could actually visit him in person, and used those measurements to order two pairs of boots from him: first a pair of Underdogs, and now some engineers. Both pairs were built on different lasts (which I will discuss more later), and both fit perfectly. My Specifications

While you can’t really go wrong with any of Brian’s engineer makeups, I personally loved the design Brian designed for himself: brown CXL horsehide hand-finished black, a full leather outsole, and full woodsman heels. They definitely have a more western, cowboy, workwear vibe compared to most other engineer boots out on the market, but in my opinion these are one of the best patterns, with some of the cleanest construction to boot.

I did make a few tweaks/upgrades from Brian’s boots when designing my own, which I’ve listed below:

One of the biggest reasons I keep going back to Brian is that he’s able to use the orthotics I typically slip into all my footwear and actually build them into the insoles of my boots. Not sure how difficult this actually is for a boot maker, but Brian has absolutely nailed the fit on my ugly feet both times, and it’s super convenient to not have to worry about a removable orthotics.

Price, Lead Time, & Shipping

The initial deposit to reserve a pair of Role Club boots is $200 regardless of which model you are ordering, with the remaining balance due upon completion. I visited Brian’s shop in Los Angeles on 8/21/2019 and placed my deposit on 10/15/2019, with an estimated completion date of November 2020. However, due to delays in construction (including waiting for my custom metal toe plates to come in), my boots weren’t actually completed until 3/25/2021 (nearly five months late). Inconvenient, but it’s not like I was wearing boots and going out much anyway due to COVID.

When I placed my first deposit for my Underdogs in August 2019, the estimated wait time was just 8 months (April 2020). However, when I placed my second deposit for these engineers just two months later, the wait time had jumped to 13 months (November 2020). To be honest, I’m not even sure how long Brian’s queue is now. Last I heard it was sometime in 2023 or 2024. (Freaking insane. So thankful I placed my second deposit when I did, before his waitlist exploded.)

At the time I placed my deposit, the base price for Brian’s engineer boots was $1350. After a few upgrade fees (hand-finished leather, toe plates, etc.), the final price of my specific makeup was $1500. Minus my initial $200 deposit, my final payment for these engineers was $1300 + $20 shipping. I made this payment via Venmo on 3/26/2021, my boots were shipped the following Monday 3/29/2021, and I received them via USPS on 4/2/2021.

At $1500, these are not a cheap pair of boots by any means. However, for engineer boots this price is actually not unreasonable, as there are some other brands selling engineer boots at a higher price point in stock sizes with limited to no customization (i.e., Clinch). #perspective #itsallrelative (To be completely honest, I roll my eyes when people scoff at a pair of boots in this price range, claiming they’re “too expensive” or that they can’t afford it, and turn around and buy 2-3 pairs of average Vibergs instead. Just stop. Clearly it’s not the cost, it’s your personal values and priorities. #endrant lol (Also, not knocking Clinch or Viberg or anything. Just a few examples to prove a point.))

ANYWAYS. For those hesitant to commit to such an ungodly wait time, I will point out that the cost to reserve a pair of Role Club boots is just $200, regardless of which model you are ordering. In fact, you don’t even need to finalize your order at the time of deposit. You can continue to brainstorm, change your mind, and discuss with Brian about your specifications long after the deposit is placed. (I mean, you have like 2-3 years before he even starts working on your boots anyway, so you have ample time to decide. Haha) Also, should you decide you can’t wait that long (or you suddenly become more financially responsible, lol), I hear you can also use that $200 deposit for something else more affordable, such as a resole of another pair of boots. Either way, hopefully this knowledge makes the $200 deposit a little less daunting and scary of a commitment.

Unboxing

The boots arrived in a single standard shoe box enclosed in a standard plastic shipping bag. There was zero padding included, so the box did arrive with some dents and dings. Inside the box, each boot was slipped inside an individual clear plastic sleeve. Unlike most other brands, no extra padding, tags, or shoe bags were included. Just the boots. (Though, they are some freaking amazing boots. Lol)

The 2307 Last

When trying to pick a last for these engineers, I was debating between his 1940s last and the 2307 last. Ultimately I picked the 2307, mostly because it had a lower toe bump. I do think that his 1940s last is his most popular for engineers, and the toe bump really doesn’t make too big of a difference once the unstructured toe collapses. (For a more in-depth summary of all the lasts/toe shapes Role Club toe has available, I will link you to Brian’s YouTube video.)

I had my Underdogs built on Brian’s 100 last, which typically has a significantly slimmer, almond toe shape in comparison to the 2307 last. However, due to my awkwardly wide feet and bunions, the MTM 100 last ended up not being too dissimilar from my MTM 2307 last. I definitely like the 2307 more, as the outer sweep of the toe box has a more angular, elegant curve in comparison to my 100 last, which kinda just looks like a thumb.

As you can see, my Underdogs were supposedly built on the 100 last, but ended up being way more rounded than expected (which I’m happy about).

The Leather

Brian most often sources his leather from the Horween Tannery, specifically CXL horsehide and shell cordovan. Brian used brown CXL horsehide hand-finished black for his own pair of engineer boots, which has aged incredibly. Personally, I tend to opt for vegtan leathers whenever possible, as it’s more environmentally friendly and in my opinion tends to build a nicer patina than chrome tanned or combination tanned leathers. Luckily, Brian happened to have some brown Italian horsebutt lying around his shop that he was willing to offer me. At the time, Brian didn’t remember the tannery from which he sourced the horsebutt (which, according to him, no longer exists), but he was able to send me a few photos. I immediately said yes.

I was hesitant at first to have Brian hand-paint black dye over this beautiful brown leather. However, I was pretty set on getting some classic black engineers, and I trusted that the black dye would slowly fade away in high abrasion areas, resulting in a beautiful black-brown pseudo-tea core finish. For horsebutt leather, there actually isn’t too much visible grain/marbling within the leather). It has a fairly smooth, consistent finish, which I don’t mind at all. Also, I can already see some browns peeking through, which gives me hope as to how the black dye will chip away as these boots break in.

Some of the brown undertones can already be seen beneath the black dye, which is most apparent on the vamps.

The Pattern & Stitching

I absolutely love Brian’s take on engineer boots. His pattern works perfectly with his lasts, creating a very well balanced, properly proportioned boot that looks just as good sitting on a shelf as it does on foot.

To my understanding, all of the boots in the Role Club Collection are branded with the same two markings: an embossed logo on the left boot and a sewn-on tag on the right.

The back stay is simple and clean. No extravagant stitch patterns or anything, just very clean, vertical lines. Nice, conservative, elegant. I like it.

I think of all the engineer boots I’ve seen on Instagram, the buckles Brian uses are some of my favorite. Flat, rectangular, roller buckles. Again, nothing gaudy. Some other brands choose to use more elaborate, bulbous buckles on their engineer boots, which kinda just look out of place. Maybe they’re too eye-catching, making it seem like they’re trying too hard. In contrast, Brian’s simple flat buckles are clean and minimal, allowing the pattern and construction quality of the boots speak for themselves. Less is more.

In general, I tend to like the look of 3-4 rows of stitching as opposed to just two. It just looks more substantial and sturdy. (Does it actually increase the quality or longevity of the boot? Probably not. I just like how it looks.) Also, can we take a moment to appreciate just how absolutely pristine this upper stitching is?

Perhaps my preference for 3-4 rows of stitching stems from my appreciation for higher levels of craftsmanship when it comes to boot pattern and construction. Having additional rows of stitching all perfectly spaced and parallel requires a little more attention to detail, and it looks amazing when properly executed.

2, 3, and 4 rows of stitching, all equally dense, evenly spaced, and perfectly parallel. Perfect execution. I haven’t found a single stitch out of place on the uppers of either boot.

Another little feature I opted to include on my boots were hand-crimped toe tracks running up the vamps of each boot. To be honest, I didn’t know too much about why it’s done or it’s benefits. However, here is an explanation I found on superfuture from Brian himself, posted by @beautiful_FrEaK:

The indentation you see on the boots is called a toe track. The reason a boot has a toe track is because the vamp went through the crimping process. It is used to get all the stretch out of the vamp because when a bootmaker needs to turn something that's 2D into 3D it is more work if the vamp is not crimped. Another benefit when a vamp is crimped is it keeps the vamp smooth without any wrinkles. The crimped vamp sits well on the shoe last.

There are different way to crimp a vamp. For example Buco puts their vamps into a crimp machine. It is a hot blade that folds the vamp in half and indents the leather. I wouldn't mind having a crimp machine (really expensive!) but I use crimp boards at the moment. It is the same process but more hands on. I last the vamp on a piece of board to get all the stretch out and it naturally gets the toe track.

Personally, I mostly chose to have the toe track for esthetic purposes, but understanding the reasoning behind it is pretty cool too.

The Heel

Unlike my Underdog boots, which have a low woodsman heel, I decided to go all out with the full woodsman heel on these engineers. I will admit, walking with such elevated heels will take some getting used to. It also definitely adds to the whole western cowboy boot vibe, but I dig it. Plus, the added lift makes me over 6 feet tall now. Added bonus.

The Sole

This is my first pair of boots with a full leather sole. Felt a bit risky putting it on such an expensive pair of boots, but whatever. They look great on Brian’s pair, so I wasn’t too worried. Plus, I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle in the California Bay Area. I don’t go on many nature hikes, nor does it ever snow here (or rain really, for that matter). Thus, I don’t really have a need for much grip or traction with my footwear.

The sole channel stitching is all pretty clean, minus one little wonky spot on the inside portion of the right boot (pictured above in the top left corner). Not a big deal though, as no one is ever gonna see it.

My biggest concern with full leather soles was the reduced durability/longevity from walking on concrete, specifically at the toe. To combat this, I asked Brian to add metal toe plates to my boots to prevent premature wear at the toe. Crisis averted.

Here’s a close up of one of the toe plates, cut into the leather sole as to be nice and flush. Apparently these had to be custom ordered to accommodate for the width of my foot, adding 4-5 months to my wait time. Meh. Worth the wait in my opinion, if it meant getting it done right.

The Welt Stitching

Similar to my Underdogs, the welt stitching on these engineers is all very clean and consistent. If I were to point out anything, it’d be that a little bit of black edge dye got on the white stitching in some areas, and there’s a small tuft of loose thread ends popping out on the inside of the left boot. However, if these are the biggest errors I could find on the whole boot, I think that’s pretty amazing.

If you look closely, you can see the spots where some of the black edge coat got onto the white welt stitching. Not the cleanest, but doesn’t bother me too much.

Here’s the small tuft of loose threads at the end of one of the 270 degree welt stitches. Again, very minor, and won’t keep me up at night.

Try On & Initial Thoughts

Being completely honest, I’m actually still blown away at how amazing these boots feel on foot. I can really tell that these boots were made to measure. I shouldn’t be surprised though, as the Underdogs Brian made for me last year fit amazingly. Although, being lace-up boots that can by cinched down with laces, they naturally are less prone to fit errors such as heel slip. Engineers, by comparison, are much more difficult to fit properly, but Brian did so masterfully.

First of all, right out of the box I actually had very little trouble getting the boots on and off. I feel like this is often the biggest struggle in breaking in a new pair of engineer boots, but not this time. Sliding my foot down the shaft felt appropriately snug, until my heel snapped past the “pass line” and sucked down into the heel cup. (I actually didn’t even need to unbuckle the strap to get them on, which was double surprising.)

Once fully seated, I could feel the built-in leather-lined orthotics beneath my feet, and the adjusted width of the 2307 last comfortably fit my bunions. What I’m most shocked by is how little heel slip I have in either boot. Until now, I had just assumed that heel slip was to be expected with all engineer boots, and only with break in and wear would that slip maybe go away. Apparently I was wrong, as these engineers already exhibit less heel slip than some of my other boots and derbies.

In designing these engineers, I chose to try out a couple things for the first time: first full leather soles, and first full woodsman heels. I know it’s still early, but I’m already loving the full leather soles. They seem to breathe much more than half and full rubber soles, and they flex and move much more naturally with the movements of my feet. I feel as though I can “feel the ground” better, if that makes sense. I will admit that I can definitely tell these leather soles have significantly less traction than rubber/cork half/full soles. However, I knew that from the get go, so me and my sedentary lifestyle are completely fine with it. I haven’t slipped yet, so it’s all good. Second, the full woodsman heels on these engineers are by far the tallest heels of any boot I own, yet once on foot, I can barely even tell the difference. Even with the steep drop off from the full woodsman heel to the leather sole, walking felt completely natural.

The last thing I’d like to note is how nicely the Italian horsebutt is breaking in. I know it’s still early, but so far all the leather on the vamps and shafts seem to be nice and tight with very little grain break or creasing. Loose grain and unsightly creasing are definitely some of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to boots, so props to Brian on absolutely killing it on the clicking. (At least so far.) I can’t wait to see how this leather continues to break in, and for the black hand-paint to chip away to reveal that beautiful brown horsebutt underneath.

If I had to pick out one spot that may require a little extra break-in, it would be the top rim around the shafts of the boot. They bounce around while I walk, knocking and banging into my shins. I expect this is probably true for most engineer boots, but hopefully this break-in period doesn’t take too long, cuz it doesn’t feel great. Until then, maybe I’ll just have to rock some longer tube socks as shin padding.

(Note: I do my best to remain impartial and objective in all of my reviews. That being said, it was difficult not to sound like some fanboy trying to sell you on a pair of Role Clubs, but this really my honest opinion. I really just love these boots. Lol)

Conclusion

If you couldn’t tell already, I’m absolutely through the roof with regards to these new engineers. The construction quality and level of finishing are pristine, and the comfort and fit out of the box is surprisingly on point. In my opinion, I think Brian and Clinch design two of the most beautiful engineer boots (on Instagram, at least), yet at the same time they exhibit two totally different vibes. Brian’s engineers draw from more rugged, western, cowboy influences, while Clinch engineers are a bit more refined, fitting very nicely within the whole Japanese workwear esthetic. Both styles are very cool, with some of the highest quality construction available.

While I’ve barely owned these for a week, and already I can confidently say that these are one of my favorite pairs in my collection. With such a beautiful pattern and solid construction, I could pick them up and stare at them all day. Also, not gonna lie, the fact that Role Clubs are so difficult to come by these days does make me feel even cooler for owning a pair. Haha

Unboxing: StyleGenie’s Surprise Me Express Smart Casual Box

Note: This is a post that was in my queue way back November 2017 and StyleGenie has up their game. I'm thinking of availing a box again just to compare it from this first try, haha. Anyway, please keep in mind that I wrote this months ago which makes the possibility of StyleGenie having a different service (probably better) than the time I tried it!

Hello, friends! This is a blog post that is different from all my other posts, but this is just something that I’ve always wanted to venture into as a blogger. This is a Surprise Me Express Smart Casual Box from StyleGenie, which claims to be the first ever style subscription box in the country. Being someone who always dresses for comfort, I wanted to try something different and let the stylists from StyleGenie pick an outfit for me to wear.

Before I get started on the unboxing part, I’ll give a quick run down with how I managed to receive this box. My curiosity for this service has been in my mind for weeks already and then one random day, I read a Facebook post of theirs saying that from a box of 899, I can get an Express Smart Casual Box for only 500! I got it for a total of PHP 599 since the shipping fee was PHP 99.

Alright, first thing’s first: creating a profile. You can either click the “Get Styled” button from their homepage or the “Create a Profile” option from their menu. On to the Create a Profile option, you will be asked if this is your first time filling out the quiz, if you’re updating your answers, or if you just want to order again. You will then be asked of the reason why you’re opting to try StyleGenie out. I personally chose option C: “It’s time to update my look”. Because like what I said earlier, I wanted to try something different. I wanted to see how other people will style me without staying with my go-to comfort clothes, which are usually consists of a shirt, jeans, and a pair of sneakers.

The next steps include the basics and it even asks for your skin tone (which helps the stylists maximize the potential of the outfit), size (self-explanatory), height, and even the specific sizes of your bra, shirt, and pants. This will really make sure that the size/s of the outfit you get, if not perfect, is near perfect fitting. The next batch of questions include your preferences. This section includes the features you’d like to emphasize, and other body parts you’re a bit uneasy to show. They’ll also ask you with colors and patterns you love and not love wearing. To be even more specific, you can provide links of outfits you really like and even your style icon!

So that’s the whole quiz experience. It then follows the usual steps of ordering online: personal information necessary for shipping, payment details, order confirmation, payment confirmation, and the actual shipping of the box. It took a week after ordering and 4 days after payment confirmation until I finally received my order.

Ta-dah! I love the personal touches of the box. It gave me that special treatment kind of vibe. It’s really simple but it let me know that this service really is hands on with every order they get.

The box isn’t the sturdiest but it’s an okay quality kind of packaging. If you look closely, you’ll see a few creases on the top part. I guess it all depends on the courier’s handling. The thing about the packaging though is that it’s not sealed, and you can easily slide it and open the package. This could be an issue but I guess they trust their couriers so much so I guess that’s fine. Or maybe it’s because I’m from Metro Manila and it doesn’t take much time for the actual shipping. I don’t really know, hahaha. Anyway, opening the box reveals this wrapping paper with the pattern of their logo, just like the box.

As you open it further, you’re surprised with a handwritten note personally from the stylist plus a bonus of a discount code when subscribing to a monthly plan! The handwritten note was a lovely touch. Knowing my sentimental and old school self, I’m such a sucker for these things and this definitely made my day, besides the thrill of receiving my order.

For the Express Smart Casual box, I received two items for an outfit. A pleated velvet skirt and an off-shoulder top. This is what the stylist, JP, called in his note as a “classic-romantic” look.

Each of the item has a tag that says “Do not remove this tag. Items can only be returned if tag is still attached and garment is unworn except for trying-on.” The bottom part has a link for more information on their exchange policy. (Yes, no refunds, just exchange.) When I ordered this, they used to have a 7-day allowance for the request for exchange. But they recently updated it to a 30-day allowance. You can read more about it here.

The first item from the box is this gray pleated velvet skirt that runs from my waist to a few inches under my knees. It has slits on its side and adds a more feminine touch to the clothing. It also has a layer of thin, somewhat sheer, black cloth underneath and runs until the start of the slit. I do have a few issues about this piece, though. The garter is like an inch and a half thick and it looks distracting for me. It just looks bulky when worn. The garter also sometimes twists in a really awkward way and I had a hard time trying to fix it back. But like what I said, I’m all for trying out something new that’s why I decided to keep this in my wardrobe. I thought of wearing this for Halloween (I went as a generic witch, lol) but I can’t find a top I already own that I can pair with this skirt.

The next item is a black off-shoulder top. I’ve always wanted an off-shoulder top and it made me kind of like this piece. The details on the sleeves were a cute touch too! You can tie the ends as a ribbon and adds a bit of character to the outfit.

One thing to note is that the material is sheer so even if it’s black, you can still somewhat see through the fabric. I’m not in love with this piece but it’s something new to my wardrobe and I know that there is a big possibility that I'll use it in the near future.

If I were to wear both pieces in an outfit, I don’t really think I’ll be comfortable wearing them. To be honest, I’m quite confused if they’re really meant to be worn at the same time because I don’t see it forming a cohesive outfit. I’d insert a photo of me wearing the outfit, but I haven’t had the time to do that, hahaha. I did try it but I didn’t like it. But I’m open to trying the pieces on separate outfits.

The whole experience was really fun and I’d love to do it again. It was such a thrill to order something not knowing what you’ll receive. It’s like buying yourself something for Christmas with the actual element of surprise in it. It’s also such a lovely experience knowing that actual stylists evaluated your quiz and your style; and that they came up with an outfit that they think would look great on you.

As an overall review of the whole service and the items, I’d give it a 3 out of 5 because despite it being such a fun experience, I honestly think that the materials aren’t the best. It’s okay that I got it on sale but if I were to buy it for the regular price with this quality, I’d opt for something else. But on another note, it’s the actual experience that I really value from this service. I just hope they’ll up their game when it comes to the quality of the items. But, yes, I’ll be on the lookout for more discount codes and promos and I might try their other boxes as well.

1. why did you choose your url?

I definitely chose this in my middle school Harry Potter phase- I found myself very similar to Hermione Granger, I was a proud Hufflepuff, and I was a fan of the alliteration. I’ve thought about changing it because tbh I haven’t even thought about HP in years, let alone participating in the fandom, but it’s kind of my brand now? I’ve had it for so long that it’s weird to think about changing it

Haha nope. I fixate on one thing at a time pretty much so like... there’s no point.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

Seven years. I don’t want to talk about it.

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

I was freshly beginning my Downton Abbey obsession, so of course I was poking around the internet to see what was there in terms of fandom. Tumblr seemed like the most active place, and so I stalked several DA blogs before finally joining.

6. why did you choose ur icon/pfp?

It’s Mary and Matthew, my first real long-term-active-participant-in-the-fandom OTP, and I’ve had that icon forever. I suppose I could change it to better reflect my interests now, but I also am just attached to it.

7. why did you choose your header?

I honestly couldn’t tell you. It was a long time ago.

is that a thing you can figure out? I really don’t have a clue.

1,120. Which is like... what? How? Truly incomprehensible to me. Yes I’ve been here seven years and a fair amount of them are probably pornbots or long inactive blogs but still I could not for the life of me explain to you why I have so many of them.

484. I do need to go clean that out because I can assure you that some of those blogs have not posted since like... 2015.

An... embarrassing amount lately lol. The last few years I feel like I was barely on but then I got sucked into TWW fandom and I’m constantly chatting with people and engaging in the fandom now which is fantastic but I would also not want to look at how much time I spend on this hellsite.

I have no interest in internet fights. If you post something I don’t like, I ignore it.

14. how do you feel about the “you need to reblog these” posts?

I ignore them. Tumblr for me is my fun escape from the world, and the Tumblr brand of social justice is often just an echo chamber of what is frequently misinformation, so I don’t feel obligated to reblog something just because I’m told I have to.

15. do you like tag games?

Yes, they’re fun! I often plan on doing them and then forget, but I do enjoy them (and I love reading other people’s answers).

16. do you like ask games?

I LOVE ask games. So so much fun. The two tropes and a ship thing I just did? Just such a joy to get to come up with all of these fic ideas on the spot and share them with you all (and there might be a fic or two that gets written from those).

1. Why did you choose your url?

It’s a song by the band ‘the devil wears prada’ that really spoke to me when I was younger, because I was emo as hell and Sad™ - honestly it still hits and I don’t quite have the heart to change it I don’t think. I’m too sentimental lol. And also, I really struggle with being creative and I was lucky this one was even available haha

2. Any side blogs?

Nooo, it would be good for organisation of everything I like but I also like the idea of just having all this crap in one place haha. I did however, co-own a dan and phil blog with a bunch of people a long time ago. Oh, and me and a friend ran a decently successful lingerie blog at one point!!!!!

Since July 2009, with some breaks in between!

No, but almost everything I post is from the queue. I don’t understand queue tags because like, it’s not important for the people who follow me to know whether I’m actually online or not LOL

A very cool friend in HS started using it and introduced me to it in media class. Think lots of faded/filtered/aesthetic pics, emo stuff, band stuff.. yeah iykyk

A ship in one of my favourite tv shows finally became canon! Which has never happened in a show like this, aka an episodic cop show lol and considering all that I want to get as much use out of this ship as I possibly can. I’ve semi re-branded... lol not really but I just... love them so much omg

I was going with a nice forest/green theme and the icon I had before matched too. Trees with fog is a big vibe always (twilight vibes okay there! I said it)

Atots supremacy 😔✊ but no lol. I liked my prev url,seetians a lot, it was cute 🥺. But after the finale i had a lot of phutian feels and i wanted smth related to phutian. But then after 5 months or so i was like im never gonna use all of these apps so i started deleting them and then i saw tumblr and went oohh whats this let me take a look and opened an account djdjjdjs. And I was in a sfh hyperfixation that time so i stayed for the sfh posts and then I watched h3 trapped (my first bl) > watched wyel > made content for wyel > somehow found 2g by gifs and the rest is history 😌

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

I found a lot of cool designs on pinterest and was like what if I use these ideas for my icon 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️ and tehohaew supremacy ofc 💞💞

7. why did you choose your header?

Cause im lazy and I literally giffed only that scene from ep2. And then i posted it TWICE and made it my header too. Work smarter not harder 😌 but also i like that shot? Like this is the equivalent of the sunset shot of itsay ep5 and i like it. Plus i added sparkles OBVIOUSLY but you cant see them unless you take a close look on it
