Kaiju Week in Review (June 25-July 8, 2023)
I picked a bad time to skip a week lol
Tumblr media
Ultraman Blazar, the 35th entry in the Ultra Series, has made the scene. Episode 1 throws us right into a battle between humanity and a space monster. Blazar's the pushy type, all but forcing Gento to transform, but he doesn't speak Japanese—just yowls. For now, that makes him the show's central mystery. The show's defense team, SKaRD, won't actually form until the next episode, at which point we should have a better sense of it. But I'm intrigued so far.
Tumblr media
Free streaming TV service Pluto TV has added a Godzilla channel. It boasts, or should soon boast, all of the Japanese Godzilla films minus King Kong vs. Godzilla and Shin Godzilla, plus Rodan, all the Mothra movies, The War of the Gargantuas, Godzilla (1998), and Godzilla: The Series. A Blu-ray.com user has composed a detailed rundown of the versions of the films used—short version, nothing we haven't seen before apart from a few small changes.
Tumblr media
I got to see Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken before its official June 30 release date thanks to Regal's Monday Mystery Movie series. I guess I didn't retain much memory of the trailer, because it surprised me how early in the film the title character first grew into a kaiju. I can't give it an especially enthusiastic recommendation—comparisons to Luca and Turning Red are inevitable and don't flatter Ruby at all. But I get a kick out of seeing kaiju in such alien territory as a hyperactive animated kids' movie, and they continue to show off their flexibility as metaphors (Ruby is plainly neurodivergent). 7 outta 10.
Nimona dropped on Netflix the same day, and that's one anyone reading this column should sprint to watch. It saves its kaiju for the third act, and I've held off on posting much about that part of the story yet, but trust me, Ishiro Honda would be proud.
Tumblr media
After years of lackluster Gorgo home video releases, Vinegar Syndrome seems poised to finally do it right in 4K Ultra HD. (If you're like me and don't have a way to watch such discs yet, don't worry, it comes with a Blu-ray.) New scan, new audio commentary, special features both new and old, and a killer cover. For those unfamiliar with the company, note that this release is "only available on [the Vinegar Syndrome] website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them."
youtube
Every episode of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again is now subtitled, a fine excuse to get acquainted with one of the Reiwa era's biggest surprises. No stakes, no budget, just a bunch of Toho's biggest stars acting like a bunch of fools.
Tumblr media
There's always more Godzilla toy news than this column can hope to cover, but a few highlights:
Bandai's ever-expanding Movie Monster Series will release Gamera 1965, Gyaos 1967, and Battra larva later this month. The defunct Daiei Kaiju Series last offered a Showa Gamera in 2006, and never covered any of his foes from that era; here's hoping Gyaos is the first of many.
Hiya Toys now has the license to produce figures from the Toho Godzilla films, not just the Monsterverse.
Super7 will be selling ReAction figures of Godzilla chomping some helpless people on a subway train at San Diego Comic Con. They just get it (and hopefully the many of us who aren't going will have some way of getting it that doesn't involve scalpers).
Tumblr media
The new unit in Godzilla Battle Line is Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah. The former evolves into the latter after his first death. Keizer is a heavy hitter with a twist: he regains 20% of his health with every defeated foe. Great against swarms, but you don't see too many of those these days.
Tumblr media
Believe it or not (many are still in denial), but Pacific Rim turns 10 on Wednesday. Thankfully, per this Tweet from director Guillermo del Toro, the effective start of the Kaiju Renaissance (and one of my all-time favorite films) won't go unrecognized on its first big anniversary. I'm guessing a cast reunion?
Tumblr media
More translations from Noah Oskow await on Toho Kingdom, these a collection of synopses of early versions of Godzilla vs. Mothra, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla from the Toho DVDs. Much of this has been translated in greater detail already, but the later drafts are interesting.

Tagged by @period-dramallama - thank you!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?:
Seven. Not enough.
(Guys there's no number 2 in this thing, where did it go??)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At present, ReBoot and sometimes I drop back into Elizabeth (1998). I was much more of a fanfic slut in my youth, multiple fandoms on the go. (I've done Power Rangers, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Disney's Hercules...)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Dodge and Burn (ReBoot)
Road to Ruin (ReBoot)
Mea Culpa (Elizabeth 1998)
Inconcessus fructus (Elizabeth 1998)
Dodge and Burn: Chapter 11.5 - Optional Add-on (ReBoot)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes. It's something I've always done. I think it stems from the early days of Fanfic.net and Live Journal where many people were more generous with their time and left lots of comments and engaged in discourse, whereas now I get very little feedback. I enjoy thanking people or answering questions, it makes the work put into a fic feel worthwhile that it's created some kind of engagement. I think society now is more geared to comsuming but not reflecting which is a shame.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I'm hoping "Dodge and Burn" will fill that gap. I'm not sure Mea Culpa or Incon' were angsty? They had angst but I think the ending tied up ok.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
What's a happy ending? I don't think I've written a happy ending for years. Maybe back in my Doctor Who days.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not any more. I wrote a Star Wars fic a good 20 years ago which to be fair was terrible and featured lots of unnecessarily cruel tropes but it got a lot of love at the time, until quite some years after, someone randomly began reviewing every chapter and bombing it. I don't know why they kept wasting their time on something they really didn't like, I guess people enjoy dumping on others. I just turned off the notifications, it was wirtten too long ago for me to care. I've grown since then. I don't get hate any more really, my fics are super niche rarepairs in minority fandoms, I don't get many readers. You're either into it or you've never heard of it.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes. It's pretty tame overall, I try to focus on emotion rather than action. I seem to enjoy writing some sub/dom elements - not proper BDSM but there's certainly power play in my smut. It's a battlefield more than a bedroom.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I've touched on crossovers but they're such hard work and really only appeal to me rather than a wider audience as I fix on really weird-ass combinations. I've never finished a crossover fic. I started a Lion King/Discworld one many years ago. Recently I had fun with Elizabeth (1998)/Attack on Titan. I wrote some snippets and am determined it could work if I put my mind to it but yeah, way too niche.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I doubt it. I have this low key - not fear, perhaps curiosity - that things I wrote years ago might have been repackaged and recirculated and I'd have no idea because I've lost touch with so any fandoms.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. I'm too much of a control freak to want to share a fic.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
I can't choose one. I love, love, love Elizabeth/Walsingham (Walsibeth) from the Elizabeth movie as it just means so much to me, and it's been with me a long time. And I feel like it's almost exclusively mine, I've read very few other fics of that pairing before I started writing it in the mid 2000s.
Megabyte and Dot from ReBoot are my current obsession and again that pairing is something I've liked for a long time. They're so much fun to write, at constant battle with each other. I think I'm better at writing them now that I'm older as I can tap into life experience and not just ride on my youthful hormones.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I rarely finish anything tbh. I will say Dodge and Burn, i desperately want to finish it but my legacy does not bode well for it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Sexual tension I think? Maybe.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I have been overly descriptive in the past and spoon fed the reader with the character's thoughts and motivations. I'm trying to peel back from that and show rather than tell. There will definitely be other weaknesses. I feel like I focus too much on dialogue but I love writing dialogue. I hate writing battles or heavy action scenes, I need to focus on building my skills in that area.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I'm not a linguist so I wouldn't dare.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
If we're talking pre-internet childhood, maybe Power Rangers?
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
I do love Dodge and Burn which I'm currently working on, it's a lot of fun, but I remain proud of Inconcessus fructus that I wrote in the mid-2000s, I actually think it's one of my best pieces of writing and I fear I peaked back then.

'Universal's Oppenheimer has become one of the biggest phenomenons of the summer box office. The Christopher Nolan-directed film, despite being in theaters for just over two weeks, has already shattered several major Hollywood records. Now, Oppenheimer has become the highest-grossing World War II film of all time
According to the most recent projections, Oppenheimer has brought in $559 million at the worldwide box office. This surpasses the previous record-holder, Dunkirk, a 2017 film which told the story of the Dunkirk Evacuation during the Battle of France, which generated $527 million globally. It's unlikely that the creative team behind Dunkirk will fret at being knocked down, though – that film was also directed by Nolan, and also featured Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy.
Oppenheimer's new title also means that the 1998 Steven Spielberg-directed classic, Saving Private Ryan, moves into third place on the World War II genre list with $482 million. This figure, though, is unadjusted for inflation, and Saving Private Ryan – which featured Oppenheimer co-star Matt Damon – would actually be number one if inflation was factored in.
While Oppenheimer is still trailing behind in the "Barbenheimer" battle, its phenomenon counterpart – Barbie – has generated more than $1 billion in the same amount of time, the project has undoubtedly secured its place in war film history. Oppenheimer was filmed for IMAX cameras, and its impressive display on the massive screen has helped it become one of the most successful IMAX films in recent memory. It has garnered more than $114 million on IMAX alone, and its cash haul even prompted an extended run of the film in 70mm IMAX on the 30 screens worldwide that can play this format.
Oppenheimer Has Benefited From a Massive Marketing Ploy
Oppenheimer's box office success is hardly a surprise, given that it has been significantly hyped up due to its ensemble cast and auteur Nolan behind the camera. The film follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy), who was tasked with leading the Manhattan Project to build the first atomic bomb during World War II. Oppenheimer must learn to work with a hard-nosed team of scientists, as well as Leslie Groves (Damon), to complete the testing of the bomb so that it may be used against Japan to end the war.
Beyond Murphy and Damon, the film features an ensemble cast of Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Jason Clarke, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and many more. Nolan directed the film from a screenplay he wrote himself, and also produced the film through his Syncopy banner alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, and Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven. Nolan is known for his meticulous scripts that typically feature very minute details, with Murphy telling Collider it was "one of the best screenplays I've ever read, without a doubt." Due to overwhelming interest, the screenplay was released online for purchase, where it is already selling out.'

brief intro + currently watching
what's up with ya, tumblr people? as i noted in my bio, this blog here is a sideblog. secondary blog. whatever the better term is. tumblr calls it a secondary blog but i've pretty much only ever seen second blogs referred to as sideblogs. so i think i'll call it that. so. this blog here's a sideblog off of my main, @pirateprincessofpizza.
i always said to myself, "i'll just post whatever i want on my main. i'm not gonna make a sideblog. i have no need for one." ...but i gave in. i want the organized chaos of my main to remain as it is with what i post on there now. which consists largely of once upon a time and other miscellaneous content. so i made this one to obsess over other movies and tv shows and actors. and the possibility of books as well.
this particular post will also consist of an ever-changing "currently watching" list, which will be placed below the cut so you can choose whether you'd like to look at it.
if you're curious if i've seen any films or tv shows, feel free to ask! i have a weird range of things that i've watched. i've seen some films/tv shows that may be somewhat obscure, and i've not seen some that might be well known.
currently watching:
tv (parentheses indicate season i’m currently on, if a show has multiple):
star wars: rebels (season 3)
toradora
rewatch of the flash (season 7)
rewatch of once upon a time (season 1)
i’m also currently working my way through the star wars screen franchise, films and shows both included
films:
val kilmer's entire filmography, basically. so far i've watched, in chronological order:
top secret (1984)
real genius (1985)
top gun (1986)
the murders in the rue morgue (1986)
willow (1988)
billy the kid (1989)
thunderheart (1992)
tombstone (1993)
batman forever (1995)
heat (1995)
the saint (1997)
the prince of egypt (1998) (i think i'll always wonder why he didn't sing in this movie. like. imagine.)
at first sight (1999)
the salton sea (2002)
blind horizon (2003)
conspiracy (2008)
planes (2013)
1st born (2019)
val (2021)
top gun: maverick (2022)
and at some point i'd like to get through johnny depp's entire filmography, an idea that's been hanging around in my brain for years. i've seen:
edward scissorhands (1990)
all pirates films (2003, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2017)
secret window (2004)
finding neverland (2004)
charlie and the chocolate factory (2005)
corpse bride (2005)
both alice films (2010, 2016)
rango (2011)
dark shadows (2012)
into the woods (2014)
and for the fun of it, i'm currently reading gilded by marissa meyer.

Books I Read in 2021
#83 - Shadowmarch, by Tad Williams
Mount TBR: 69/100
Beat the Backlist Bingo: Cover features your favorite color prominently
Rating: 1/5 stars
Well, that was a slog.
So I have a history with this piece of intellectual property. I was introduced to Williams as an author in college (1998) because several of the friends I made my first year were big fantasy nerds--no surprise there--and I was perfectly ready to move on from my high-school-era love of less sophisticated fantasy authors. I borrowed The Dragonbone Chair from one of those friends and off I went.
So in 2001 when news about Williams writing an online serial went around, and I saw the $15 price tag...well, I was a perpetually almost-broke college student still, and sure I spent money on books, but that was a high gateway, because a) I didn't own my own computer yet, I was borrowing friends' or using the computer lab to write papers and such; and b) sure, a chunky fantasy novel might be $7 or $8 in paperback, but it was portable, easy to reread whenever, and nobody had tablets or smartphones or e-readers yet, so an online serial publication was definitely not portable. Even fifteen dollars seemed like too much for the inconvenience of a book I could only read sitting at a computer, and couldn't read all of at once.
I was genuinely angry about this shift away from the paradigm, and much like Williams vowing this serial was online only and would never be published traditionally (which I distinctly remember but don't actually have a source for) I too vowed that I would never read it.
I held out much longer than he did, if my memory of that claim is even true. But I'm wishing now that I hadn't bothered.
This is bad. Not even close to the level of quality I expect from Williams, based on the earlier Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series, as well as War of the Flowers--which was weird but I enjoyed it--and the Otherland series, which was even weirder and not always good, but yeah, I still enjoyed that too, for the most part.
Who am I supposed to care about in this book? I'm no stranger to multiple protagonists, but there are simply too many here, meaning none of them get the development time they would need to be interesting. I'm trying to wean myself from the complaint that protagonists need to be "likable," because a character can be a jerk and still be interesting, but few of these protagonists are particularly likable either!
1. Barrick is a whiny jerk who folds under pressure and abdicates responsibility to his sister, and then makes a spectacularly bad decision for no reason other than to set up some tension at the end, and his future arc. If it's because he's "mad," bad plot reason, and if it's because he's affected by the more general shadow-madness, well, I guess he could be vulnerable to it like anyone else, but that's pretty flimsy too. 2. Briony is a fairly standard "if only I weren't a woman, people would take me seriously" princess who doesn't fold as much under pressure but is dealt a really raw deal. I'll give her credit, she does legitimately try her best to rule her lands, but she's also kind of a whiny jerk like her brother, too. 3. Quinnitan is...pointless. Sure, I see how the end of her arc in this book echoes those of the Eddon twins, but there is no direct connection between her plot and anyone else's. And I mean that literally, if there's anything that ties her story to any other single part of the book, I simply do not see it, it's buried in lore or foreshadowing that was lost on me amid the sheer weight of nearly 800 pages of plodding narrative. I read all of her scenes constantly wondering why I should care, and the fact that her arc is a very basic harem plot, "I don't want to be a token wife but really what choice do I have?" sort of thing, doesn't help, because on its own it's incredibly unoriginal. 4. Chert is marginally likable, because he's arguably got the most defined personality and most personal growth in the book, as a person of a "little" race who is distinctly not human--I get a mix of gnome and dwarf, with a faint whiff of Podling from The Dark Crystal--and who deals with an unexpected foundling by taking him into his family and trying to make it work, even when that foundling is really a big blank space in the story who still manages to get into trouble. 5. Captain Vansen gets points from me for being the guardsman deep in unrequited love, which is a trope I would absolutely eat up with a spoon. The problem is, the object of that love is a protagonist I don't care for (Briony,) leading me to question what the eff he's thinking that he can even admire her from a distance, let alone be in infatuation/love. And his plot arc is mostly "something goes wrong that's not really has fault but everyone blames him anyway." Which got dull.
Chert and Vansen are most of the reason this book gets a second star*, honestly. Chert's scenes with the Rooftoppers are generally pretty excellent, even if they're mostly tied to a plot arc that I don't care for.
The other thing that's getting me about this is that it feels like a deliberately grim-dark retread of Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. You've got a castle that's the seat of current government but used to belong to the enemy--the enemy that no one is sure even exists anymore, that lives in a land far enough away to feel distant but also somehow close enough to be threatening, once people believe in them again. That castle is perched upon magically important ruins/caverns, and that enemy has forms of magic/communication that affect humans and can cause or appear symptomatic of madness. There's a race of small likable people who aren't quite dwarves or any other "standard" fantasy race, but are still somehow cute/appealing. There's a crippled prince who's not really well-liked. One of the primary female protagonists is a young woman who laments the limitations of her womanhood under the patriarchal feudal system of the world.
And to someone who's never read either of these series, that list of similarities could mostly read like fairly common fantasy tropes, and I forgive anyone who reads this review and thinks that. But I've read MSaT probably ten times all the way through in the twenty-plus years since I was introduced to it, and I feel like I've just been handed the same story again, with a thick coat of gray paint slathered on it and a few details changed--and those changes are basically always for the worse. No one in this story can be said to be a direct equivalent to Simon, who gets a very clear hero's journey, but if I'm supposed to slot Barrick in as a Simon/Josua mashup (that crippled prince problem) then it takes the entire book to get Barrick out of his comfort zone and on his journey, where Simon got booted from the castle at the end of the first act of the first book.
And that gets at the underlying problem that is at least partially fueling all other problems--this book is clearly just the first act of the larger story, and yes i know! that is what first books do! but this also doesn't have a lot of forward motion on its own, and it doesn't resolve anything aside from the mystery of a single murder at that happens near the beginning. Seriously, all other plot threads get kicked down the road with the "and now they're exiles" theme that the ending has assigned to most of the protagonists. Chert doesn't suffer that fate, but the ending of his story line--also the end of the book itself--is the foundling reasserting that he doesn't know who he is, which is not new information. We've literally not known who he is the whole time, except that we do find out who his mother is, but don't find out how he was taken or why he apparently hasn't aged as much as he should have or what the Qar intended by sending him back "home." The identity of his mother is basically the least important question surrounding him.
I truly feel like I just read a 750-page prologue, and that is not a good feeling.
*Yeah, I told myself this was a two-star book, but by the time I wrote the whole review, it's not and I can't pretend I still believe that. This is a one-star book. This is so bad I don't want to go on with the series, even though it almost has to get better, now that most of our protagonists are out on their journeys. And because it could hardly get worse, right? But this already took up so much of my time (I had to take a week-long break in the middle to binge some romances, as a relief from all this grimdark toil) and even though I've managed to collect secondhand copies of the rest of the series, and they've been sitting on my shelves for a few years waiting for me to invest my energy into them...I'm giving up. Not worth it.

What Star Wars legends comics would you recommend for your favs.
I’m honestly bored and I wanna read about these hot bad bitches😭😭
I do! One thing I like about these Legends Prequel-era comics is that they're mostly divided into arcs that are readable outside of context so there's no real need to read 83+ issues of it all I've only gotten up to the 54th issue more or less so this will be kinda incomplete
So if you want to start with Aurra Sing there is (from what I've read): -Star Wars (1998) #7-12 (Outlander arc) -Star Wars (1998) #28-31 (The Hunt for Aurra Sing arc) -Jedi: Aayla Secura (tho that one requires further context) -Old Scores - short comic in Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures Volume 8
For Aayla it's a bit more complicated given her story is very strongly tied to Quinlan Vos (the main protagonist of most Republic comics), but if you don't mind reading about 3 more issues that don't have Quinlan then my recs are: -Star Wars (1998) #19-22 (Twilight arc, mostly Quinlan, and Aayla doesn't have her memories when she appears) -Star Wars (1998) #32-35 (Darkness arc) -Optional: Star Wars (1998) #36-39 (The Stark Hyperspace War arc, a bunch of Jedi and a soldier telling Aayla the story of a war) -Star Wars (1998) #42-45 (Rite of Passage arc) -Star Wars: Republic #49 -Tides of Terror (short comic story from Star Wars Tales #14) -Star Wars: Republic #50 -Star Wars: Republic #54 (No Aayla, just for context) -Jedi: Aayla Secura
For Asajj you can start with the original 2D Clone Wars animated series (not necessary, it just technically takes place before and it's fun and good) and then: -Star Wars: Republic #51-52 -Jedi: Mace Windu -Star Wars: Republic #53 -Star Wars: Republic #60 (context is Obi-Wan and Alpha-17 being captured by Asajj) -Star Wars: Republic #69-71 (I read them without context but I'm not sure it was the best idea) -Obsession #1-5 (Asajj is in only two issue bit the rest are necessary to read)
So yeah there's not that much for each of them but I like what there is Also, some heads up for navigation and shit: -The Star Wars (1998) series started just a few months before The Phantom Menace's release and mostly ran between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. So any weird things/inconsistencies that don't match up with Prequels canon, like Jedi with red Lightsabers, have a reason. -Star Wars (1998) ran until issue #45, and in issue #46 and onward the series' name was changed to Star Wars: Republic. -Again, I'm still not done reading Republic, so I've only recommended things that I've already read for Aayla lol
