-immediately posts more Pokémon AU-
Alfyn has a Delibird. They are not native to Clearbrook, and she loves to pull berries out of her tail to give to people. It’s like, the first thing she does. Introduces Alfyn to a lot of people just by standing there and offering a berry out of no where. (She did it to Therion too, and if it’s not modern AU, she 100% pecked at Therion’s bangle when the 3 of them met up again later after Therion’s failed heist) She ended up in Clearbrook when Alfyn was a child (after Graham had left and Alfyn felt better), not sure why, she just did. She probs got lost or somethin’, she’s occasionally ditzy.
Alfyn and Zeph were picking berries, met the Delibird, and when she was pulling a berry out of her tail to give to Alfyn, Alfyn was pulling a berry out of his basket to give to her. They both look up with their offered berry like “huh?” Alfyn and Zeph play with her for a while, and the Delibird, being herself, is like “Ah, I have a trainer now”. Alfyn and Zeph leave, Delibird does her own thing because she wants more berries or something. Alfyn’s mother has put him to bed when she hears a knock at the door (really the Delibird pecking at it). She opens the door, confused because she has never seen a Delibird before, the Delibird offers her a berry, because it’s what she does, before moving past Alfyn’s mom and looking for Alfyn, hopping into his bed like she belongs there. Alfyn is all happy she’s there because “Hey, it’s my new friend!” and Alfyn’s mom doesn’t know what to do about this strange new Pokémon but apparently it was nice to Alfyn so she lets her stay the night. Delibird thinks she’s Alfyn’s Pokémon the whole time, not realizing she’s actually this weird Pokémon who wandered in one day. She’s very good at foraging berries and other foods, actually saving the family money by bringing home edible stuff. She’s been an adult since Alfyn was a kid (or at the very least equivalent to a teen, she was not a baby Pokémon), so she’s an incredibly strong and capable Pokémon. No one expects her to be this way because of how chill/weird she acts. She knows Freeze Dry, and helps Alfyn prepare and store his ingredients.
After Goldshore, Alfyn gets a Shaymin. Gracideas burst into bloom when the kids and Marlena are grateful, which attracts the Shaymin. It follows Alfyn and the travelers have set up camp that night, relaxing by a fire. Shaymin has just quietly sat itself by Alfyn’s side and surprises everyone when they finally notice it. Shaymin are considered envoys of Dohter, so for an Apothecary to have one marks them as incredibly trustable. This is entirely superstition, but Dohter did create the Gracidea, and they are why they bloom randomly when people are grateful. (Gracideas will bloom when anyone is sufficiently grateful, not just because an apothecary helped someone) Shaymin knows stuff like aromatherapy and other healing stuff.
I mentioned Marowak in the post about Therion, but she is met in the cliff lands, probably after Alfyn has been betrayed by Miguel. Delibird and Shaymin represent stuff like Alfyn’s generosity, ice, and healing, but Marowak represents Alfyn’s ability to just completely beat the shit out of stuff. She’s a kind and gentle Pokémon who knows how to mash up berries and make natural medicines, but she knows stuff like strength and she will kick large amounts of ass. She has a baby Cubone (who goes to Therion, go read that post). Delibird is an adult and knows what she’s doing too, but Marowak is the one who’s all wise and stuff. She’s the mom friend of the Pokémon. She has the same ‘treat anyone’ creed that Alfyn does, and may have trouble with a Pokémon/Poachers much like Alfyn did with Miguel. Except she doesn’t let it stop her and put her in a funk like Miguel did Alfyn, possibly contributing to helping Alfyn get over it.
All of his Pokémon are gentle and helpful really. He attracts his people.
The blotted viper is a Seviper now. It’s huge, colored more like the blotted viper, and may or may not be the regional variant from Orsterra.

Run to Me (in the Dead of Night)
Hello everyone! I’m truly sorry this is a day late, but here’s the next chapter of my MC for the CSSNS event.  We learn a lot of new truths, the good guys come up with a plan, and the CS flirtation heats up more than a few notches (which was fun to write!)
Tumblr media
Many MANY thanks again for the amazing banner by @wingedlioness for this story!! I simply adore this!!

chapter two ~ into the light
Emma was still watching through the large front window of the diner, stunned that even though Mr. Gold was slowly making his way back to his shop - no doubt still watching, but leaving them nonetheless - Graham was still leading an unresisting Killian Jones to his squad car parked at the curb outside, a firm hand on the man’s arm and hand guiding his head down as he opened the door to put him in the back seat. She could barely process what was right before her eyes, knowing Graham wasn’t any more convinced of her new friend’s guilt than she was. If she hadn’t still had Henry pulling on her other hand, looking up at her with frightened and disillusioned young eyes, she would have run out to the sidewalk right then to reason with her boss.
She felt more than saw that Ruby had come to stand at her other side, even before the leggy brunette laid a staying hand on her upper arm.  Her clear gaze was trained to the same place as Emma’s; her solemn dark eyes watching her brother’s movements as he closed the door behind his passenger and moved slowly around to the driver’s side of the cruiser.
“There’s more to this than you know, Emma,” she stated calmly, holding Emma’s doubtful stare when she turned to glare at Ruby in challenge.
“Really, Rubes?” Emma retorted, her exasperation clear, “because it looks like the guy I work with - the friend and boss I’ve come to respect - just arrested someone without cause and is about to wrongfully hold them in jail.”
Her friend didn’t answer right away, her shoulders slumped slightly as she let out a sigh.  Her eyes fell to Henry for a moment, holding out a hand to the boy with bright red painted nails.  He took her hand without hesitation, familiar with and genuinely fond of the usually bubbly, exuberant waitress.  “Henry,” she spoke sweetly, gesturing over her shoulder to her own grandmother who had just come out from behind the counter, wiping her hands on a kitchen towel and giving Emma’s son as warm a smile as Emma had ever seen the tough old bird produce.  “Granny’s taking off until the lunch rush - nobody’s gonna come back in here until then at least.  And you need to get to school.  Will you let Granny take you?”
Henry was more than astute enough to know when he was being shielded and kept in the dark, but to his credit, he didn’t make a fuss or argue. It made Emma’s heart swell to think that maybe - just maybe - no longer than she had known and had a relationship with him, her son trusted her to do her best to right this wrong.  He wrapped his skinny arms around her waist, burrowing his face in her stomach for just a moment while she ruffled her hands through his soft, brown air, then he stepped forward and gave Ruby a quick, impulsive hug too, and went to Granny willingly.
“Come, come, my lad, let’s get you to school,” Granny fussed as she ushered him out the door with just a brief, searching look back at her granddaughter and the deputy.  Emma heard her saying something about, “...and the sooner you get to your classes, the sooner you can be right back here at the counter with that Paige of yours, and Nicholas and Ava maybe, for after school ice cream…” then the door swung shut behind them and they were gone.
Quiet settled over the deserted diner, which was never empty at this point of the morning, despite what Ruby had told Henry, but Emma ignored the rather eerie feeling in the familiar building to turn to her friend, hand on hip and waiting expectantly.  “Well, let’s hear it then,” she prompted when Ruby merely fidgeted and bit her berry red lips before turning and grabbing a rag as if she intended to wipe down tables rather than provide the promised answers.
“Oh no you don’t,” Emma said, placing herself right in Ruby’s path.  “You said I didn’t understand, that I didn’t know everything...so I’m listening.  Please, explain to me why my good, honorable partner would jail an innocent man, because you’re right, I don’t get it.”
Startling her more than a little, Ruby whirled on her, bringing herself nose to nose with Emma and staring her down.  Though most of the time Ruby disguised the strength and power she truly possessed with giggly flirtation and playful short skirts and heels, Emma sensed just then the raw fire beneath the pretty surface.  When her friend spoke, her voice was low and controlled, but it didn’t keep the sound of it from being closest in tone to a warning snarl.  “And just how do you know for certain this Jones is innocent, Emma?! Hmm? I’m pretty sure you just met him this morning, same as I did - same as anyone else in this town. He just suddenly arrives here?  In our hidden, supernatural town, in the midst of a crisis?  And that doesn’t seem the least bit strange to you?  Not to mention that he -- ”
The brunette broke off before completing that thought, whatever it might have been (and Emma was immensely curious).  Figuring it wouldn’t do any good, not when Ruby was already so fired up Emma still couldn’t help pressing, “He what? What were you going to say?”
Ruby’s fit of passion seemed to leave her as quickly as it had come. She slumped, defeated and drained looking into one of the empty booths and motioned Emma to sit opposite her.  She flung the rag onto the table between them before propping her elbows on the formica surface and burying her head in her hands for a couple of long, bracing beats.  Sighing, she shook her head and then murmured, “Nevermind, that’s not important right now.”
“Wait, how is that not…?” Emma started, but Ruby shushed her with a look, her mouth thinned to a warning line as she merely waited until Emma trailed off and paused, finally willing to wait again until Ruby had finished saying what she intended.
“Look, it’s not my story to tell, okay? Just forget it for the moment.  What you do need to hear has to do with our past in the Enchanted Forest, and some things Graham probably didn’t know how to tell you - or even want to tell, but clearly you’re going to have to gain some idea or you’ll think he’s a horrible person for considering Gold’s orders.”  She picked at her nails, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth, and then looked up to hold Emma’s gaze steadily.  “Okay,” she blew out a huff of air resignedly, then plunged forward. “So, you know how the kiss you two shared returned Graham’s memories even before the curse broke, right?”
Emma nodded impatiently, not sure where this discussion was going and fidgeting more and more in her seat to get back to the station and straighten out whatever was happening.
“Well, turns out his memories of who he was weren’t all that kiss brought back. I told you before that Graham had been taken by the Evil Queen, conscripted as one of her Black Knights, but Emma - she literally had his heart, held captive in her vault with countless others. And when someone’s heart is in another possession like that, they lose their own free will.  The person holding their heart controls them completely.  There’s no way to fight it; that person’s a pawn, a puppet, a slave forced to do the master’s bidding.  Regina used him in ways he hasn’t been able to put into words, that he hasn’t had the time or ability to deal with yet, but our pack bond lets me sense at least some of it - impressions of the fear, the pain, the helplessness - he couldn’t deny her anything.  He was trapped, but a part of him still loathes himself for the things she made him do to others, and the things she did to him against his will.”  Ruby’s eyes burned with righteous fire even as her voice floundered several times in explaining to Emma just what her brother had been through.  “Let’s just say, I hope you guys find Regina before she shows her face to Granny or me.  I don’t think either of us wants to be responsible if our inner beast takes control.”
Swallowing hard, Emma signified that she understood the naked threat; she really couldn’t even blame Ruby.  There was a part of her still aching for Mayor Mills’ hide herself for the trauma, loneliness, and self-doubt the woman had inflicted on Henry - not to mention that she was also the reason Emma had been alone all her life and never known the parents who did love her and had wanted her very much.  Who but a villain would try to convince a ten-year-old they were crazy in order to cover up their own wrongdoing?  But, she had to fight to keep that impulse in cheek.  Here before her was just one example of why she couldn’t go vigilante, however good her reasons.  Too many others were right on the brink, and somehow they had to keep the powder keg Storybrooke had become from blowing up in all of their faces.
Yet, she was also still more than a bit confused.  What did Graham’s nightmare at Regina’s hands have to do with Gold and his arresting Killian Jones? Cocking her head at her friend on the other side of the booth, Emma pressed, still trying to see the whole picture.  “But if Graham’s been under someone else’s control all this time, wouldn’t that be all the more reason for him to do what he feels is right, not just whatever Gold tells him to do?”
Ruby blew out a frustrated breath, leaning forward again intently. “Think Emma,” she murmured under her breath, quietly seething even though no one was around to overhear them.  “How do you think Graham is still alive if he got out from under Regina’s thumb?”  She closed her eyes briefly, as if having to gather the strength to think about, much less say, the next words she uttered.  “Don’t you understand? That night he collapsed...that wasn’t some random health episode or heart anomaly. That was Regina trying to kill him before he said too much.  She attempted to crush his heart into dust, and she only failed because of the superhuman strength he gains with his werewolf side.”
Emma drew in a sharp gasp, surprised and appalled to learn suddenly how close she’d come to watching him die right in front of her.  The night had been traumatic and frightening enough before, but to realize that all the time his heart had been outside his body while someone else tried to squeeze the life from it, was sickening.
Now that Ruby could see her friend was truly comprehending the horror, she pressed on, eager to have the entire dark tale out in the open light and dealt with at last. “Well, once he recovered, Graham came and told Granny and I everything.  We had to get his heart back. It wasn’t even a question.  So…”  she licked her lips, leaning forward to whisper even more furtively, truly resembling the stalking predator she could readily become, “we broke into the Mills family crypt.  We waited for a night when we knew the moon would be full, all the senses and awareness and stealth we have at our command at the peak, and when we also knew Regina would be kept late at a town council meeting and then a budget committee one after. Once we forced our way in, it wasn’t hard to detect the drag marks on the floor where that ridiculously ornate coffin have been shoved over and back again atop that secret entrance.  Graham - horrible as it was - vividly remembered where his heart was hidden the minute he set foot in that cursed chamber again.”
She shook her head briefly, as if staving off some sort of reaction she had to close her eyes against, a mental image she wished to shed welling up behind her eyes.  Emma didn’t have siblings, had never gotten the chance to experience such a bond, but she knew how it had pained her on her friend’s behalf when people had turned on Mary Margaret for her tryst with David, or when she even suspected someone might have upset Henry. It had her wanting to reach out to the she-wolf in sympathy.
A grateful if trembling smile stretched over Ruby’s painted lips, “Thanks,” she whispered, sensing Emma’s intent before the uncertain gesture was even complete.  “I promise, we’re almost finished.  It was just important you understood how we got here.”  She squared her shoulders, blew out a breath, and pulled the last bit of the story out at last.  “There we were, Graham’s glowing, magically preserved heart outside his body, but in his possession again.  Still, we didn’t know what to do, how to get it back in his chest where it belonged.  Would there be side effects?  Was it damaged after 28 years of squeezing and prying and separation from his body?  We may be magical creatures, but we don’t actually weld magic like that. We really only had one choice - much as we didn’t want to make it.  Only one other person in this town beside Regina herself might have known how to help us…”
“Gold,” Emma stated breathlessly in dawning realization, the pieces suddenly starting to click together in horrifying place.
“Yep,” Ruby affirmed bluntly, the “p” popping from her lips with scornful distaste. “And you know he never does anyone a favor without exacting a price.”
“Well,” Emma sat back hard against the vinyl of the booth seat, digesting all she’d heard and readying herself for the fight ahead.  When she met her friend’s eyes again a few seconds later there was a steely determination in their green depths that, even after their relatively short acquaintance, Ruby knew most people had learned not to question - and that she had come to respect.  “Enough of that,” Emma continued stalwartly; her stubborn mind clearly made up as she stood from the bench seat and squared her shoulders. “Come on, let’s go.”
“Wait, what?” Ruby spluttered, scrambling after her and tossing her apron on the table to follow Emma to the entrance.  “What are you going to do? I don’t think--”
Emma spun at the door, green eyes flashing, “Look, I understand why you guys went to him.  You really didn’t have any other choice.  I made that mistake once myself,” but then Emma drew herself up straighter, as if trying to physically stand taller to gather herself for the fight ahead.  “I don’t want Graham hurt either, but we can’t do our jobs and protect this town with Gold and his favors to collect hanging over our heads.  Plus, Graham still isn’t really free if he’s just having to act as a different person’s puppet.  Is he?”
Ruby didn’t answer this at first not sure, not sure how to counter Emma’s logic, but concern for her brother whose heart she had literally seen pulsing fragilely outside of his body not that long ago, still overriding most everything else.  Plus, she had almost all she could manage to keep up with Emma, who was now striding briskly toward the station, with her ridiculously high wedge heels over the uneven pavement of Storybrooke’s aging sidewalks.  Finally, she managed to get in breathlessly, “No, I guess he isn’t, when you put it that way.  But still, do we really wanna give the guy who put his heart back in reason to rip it out again?”
The question made Emma’s shoulders slump marginally, but she didn’t stop moving forward. Her voice was low and taut with worry over the seriousness of the situation when she did respond.  “I get what you’re saying, Rubes.  I do. But we may not have a choice.  This can’t go on forever.  We need to turn the tables on him.”
By the time this hissed whisper exchange was complete, they had reached the station. Emma jerked the outer door roughly in her haste and turmoil, and Ruby simply clattered in behind her - concerned naturally, but also gaining a bit of her friend’s projected confidence.  Bucking the ruling power in town appealled to her, and it was long overdue.  She’d do what she could and hope for the best. Emma was the Savior after all; she had broken the curse that gave them all back their true selves, perhaps she really could set them free once again.
Neither woman was quite prepared, however, for the calm, once might even call it ordinary, sight which greeted them once they got past the lobby and into the main office of the station.  Both Graham and Killian stood near the bars of the cell that the sheriff had clearly escorted their new guest into.  Killian Jones looking much more relaxed and at home than someone newly arrested and taken to jail had any right to - leaning against the wall of the cell, one arm propped at the elbow up on the metal crossbar and his legs crossed casually, seeming at ease as if he were at home in his favorite chair.  Graham on the other hand, looked downright anxious and sheepish, clearly not happy that Gold had been able to face his hand so neatly and all signs pointing to the guilt he felt for taking Killian in without a good reason.
It was evident that the two had been deep in conversation, and neither seemed at all upset with the other, which Emma happily took as a good sign.  Once having that gauge of the situation she made her way across the room toward them, Ruby at her heels.
“Hey there, beautiful,” Killian offered in greeting, his eyes twinkling playfully despite the less than ideal surroundings in which he found himself.
Emma felt the room go hot and her vision a bit fuzzy at the way his gaze seemed to track her motions; if she didn’t know better it would remind her of the way a predator in the wild tracked its prey before pouncing and devouring. Despite the heated flow of her blood, a shudder ran through her, making her response shaky at best, “Hey yourself, Jones.  You’re awfully chipper for someone recently incarcerated.”  She flustered despite her easy banter, shocked at how hard she’d had to bite her tongue not to call him “Handsome” in place of his name and how hard she was still fighting not to reach through the bars that separated them and pull him closer by the edge of his open jacket.
She fisted her hands reflexively and then shoved them in her back pockets, trying to simply look expectant to hear what they’d been up to.  But Jones’ eyes still watched her intently, and his brow arched with a wicked bent at her fidgeting, as if he knew exactly what was going on inside her.
“Well Lass, a lovely lady such as yourself is already visiting me - and will presumably be one of my jailers - so I can’t complain overmuch.  Your partner here has been filling me in on the rest of the story as well.  All considered, I’ve certainly been in worse straits and lived to tell the tale.”
Emma had vaguely felt both Ruby and Graham go a bit tense at Killian’s “beautiful” and his blatant flirtation, and though she’d been almost too engrossed in his aura to fully register their strange reactions, she could tell now that both of them were still a bit on their guard, perhaps even suspicious, though each was working to portray an appearance of calm.  Her eyes darted from one of her friends to the other sharply, tyring to pick up whatever last cue she was clearly missing.
When she came up empty, Emma simply decided to plow on - frustrated but anxious to move her plan forward, get Jones out of that cell, find the poor missing woman they needed to locate, and not - definitely not - tackle Jones onto her desk and mess her hands in that dark, shaggy hair of his while she kissed that infuriating smirk he was leveling at her off his face.  The picture was so vivid as it flashed in her head, she had to physically shake it loose, and her words sounded almost desperate as they spilled out in a rush and forced her to refocus.
“Good, we’ve apparently all caught up and in the loop then. Here’s the thing. We can’t let Mr. Gold, Rumplestiltskin, whoever he wants to call himself, run this town.  We need to protect ourselves and the people who’ve trusted us to keep them safe as well.  I say, we find this Belle, reunite she and Gold and tell him our debts are both paid in full,” she gestured between she and Graham but didn’t stop talking, seeing all three members of her audience open their mouths to interrupt and protest.  “I’m serious.  We let him know we’ve done what he asked - which was the right thing to do anyway - and we did it together.  So we’ve both returned the favor he did for us.  The end. Simple. He can’t hold it over us forever. I’ll take her over there myself even, so he doesn’t go for your heart again,” she added to Graham.  “This is my reckless plan after all,” she tacked on with attempted levity.
Graham protested immediately, “Emma, I couldn’t let you take that risk alone to protect my own skin.”
She shook her head, ready to tell him she didn’t want him to suffer any more at the hands of twisted, power-tripping lunatics, even if it made things awkward by letting him know she knew all, or upset with his sister for telling her.  Before she could get the words out, however, a deep voice interrupted hoarsely; emotion making it rough but all-too-certain of what he was saying.
“It’s awfully dangerous, Love.  You may think it sounds clear-cut and reasonable.  But things are never simple with Rumplestitlskin.  He lives for his deals, and he’s the king of loopholes. Trust me when I tell you that thinking you’ve gained the upper hand can prove deadly.” He raised the oddly stiff hand on his left as silent proof.
She shrugged, crossing her arms over her chest defensively and though his clearly painful past with the Crocodile as he called Gold hurt to consider, she couldn’t let it stop them.  They could all pay, but they would regardless if they kept letting Gold call the shots.  “Regardless,” she countered, “we’re going to have to take our chances.  You guys go track down any leads you think could help us find this Belle. I’ll stay here with Killian.  If we bring Gold’s missing loved one back to him, try to make our own deal in return, maybe, if the prize sweet enough, he won’t be able to resist.”  She shrugged, out of words now, “It’s the best chance we’ve got.”
“Emma, are you sure that’s wise?” Graham questioned awkwardly and then trailed off, just as Ruby began to step forward, shaking her head.
“What?” Emma questioned, planting a hand on her hip.  “Am I not a good enough deputy to watch over things here now?”
Killian reached out through the bars and pulled on her hand gently, “Easy Lass, don’t think that for a second.  It’s me they don’t quite trust.”
She turned to look at him slightly, not sure what was happening, but he sighed with a sheepish look from Graham to Ruby.  “I already told the Sheriff here how I got to this land with Mayor Mills’ sorceress mother, and did some shady things to stay on her good side back in our land.  Never mind the fact that…” he paused, licking his lips as he glanced down at his worn boots then back up at her from under dark lashes, “they can’t help doubting one of their own who doesn’t belong in a pack.  It’s part of their nature - wolves aren’t meant to run alone.  But I’ve never quite fit, and any pack I’ve tried to join sees me as a loner and wonders what’s wrong with me. Then the pattern continues and I’m still alone.”
“Wait, seriously?!?” Emma sputtered incredulously, eyes bugging, even as she sensed Graham relaxing, clearly glad not to be hiding any longer, and Ruby smirked knowingly at Killian’s admission and Emma’s reaction.  “You too? Are you serious right now?”
Killian’s smirk stretched across his face in an irresistible, hungry expression; one that Emma wanted to let devour her no matter the cost.  The low murmur of his voice rolled through her like tingling pleasure despite how she tried not to let it show. Still, she knew the heat must have rose as a blush in her cheeks and at least a small smile at his words.  “Come now, Swan. Don’t pretend my animal magnetism didn’t draw you from the first moment our eyes met.”
Emma found herself leaning forward, just as Killian leaned in as well, forehead to the metal bars, his warm breath on her cheek. “Don’t try to hide it, Love,” his teeth flashed. “I can see it, smell it on you. That kind of desire just can’t be hidden.”

“I like s’mores.”
A/N: I wrote this while I was super bored at work, so please don’t judge it too hard. It’s just funny goofy silliness.
Warnings: None! Pairing: None. Just the boys being boys.
Characters: Jack, Sam, Castiel, and Dean Word Count: 872
Summary: The boys have a stake out in the woods. Cas and Jack learn a lot about camping.
If they have to stake out in some woods somewhere to watch for some monster that probably won't show up, they can at least make it fun. Sam is probably the most excited about the whole thing. He keeps referring to it as a camping trip, like they wanted to do it. Castiel is as curious as ever, wondering why anyone would want to leave the relative comfort of their home to go out and sleep in a tent outside. From what he's learned, humans prefer comfort.
"It's just... fun," Sam tries to explain as he and Cas work together to set up the tent.
It isn't easy, since only half the team knows what's going on. Cas keeps pulling the poles out too far, or yanking them in the wrong direction. Once they're almost where they need to be, Sam says that he'll take care of it by himself. He'd rather have to walk around the tent a blue million times than have to try and direct Cas on how to do it.
While those two are fighting the tent, Dean digs a spot for their campfire. If there's one thing about camping that he knows, it's how to build a decent fire. John made sure that both of his sons knew how to build and maintain a fire. It was necessary for survival, after all. No fire equals freezing or dying of hunger. Man can only eat so many berries before he dies.
Jack is by the car, pulling out their packed things. Most of the weapons stay in the trunk. Only the axe comes out. He knows about as much about camping as Castiel does. That equates to pretty much nothing. It's an entirely new experience for the both of them. What he does know, though, is that Dean will need some wood for the fire.
Jack sets the axe beside Dean before going back to the car. He grabs the rest of the things they need, with Sam's directions. By now, the taller Winchester has the tent all set up. Cas stands back, frowning with his head tilted a little bit in a sort of judgy way. Not that he has any right to judge. He didn't set it up. Sam rolls his eyes when he sees how Cas is looking at the crooked tent. There's nothing more he can do for it, so he's decided to leave it be.
They get everything put in the tent with minimal fighting. Sam will sleep between Dean and Castiel. Jack will sleep at the other end of the tent. In reality, neither Cas nor Jack really need sleep. But they have their own little spots anyway. It's only fair, after all.
By the time everything is set up, it's about dinner time. Dean gets the fire going, showing Jack how to do it. He claims that it's because he wants Jack to know how, just in case something were to happen. He has grown pretty fond of Jack, actually. He treats him almost like a nephew, teaching him all the "important" things. Like how to fix a car. And how to start fires. Manly stuff.
Sam shakes his head and gets the food set out. In a matter of moments, they're roasting hot dogs and Dean is telling some story in which Sam is a lot dumber than he ever actually would be. It's funny all the same, and has them all laughing. After hot dogs come marshmallows for s'mores. Sam's first marshmallow drops directly into the fire as soon as he sticks it out.
"Really?" He complains, reaching over to get a new one.
Without missing a beat, Castiel leans forward and grabs the marshmallow out of the fire. For a second, Sam and Dean start to panic, calling out for Cas to stop.
"Cas, wait!" Dean says as he flings his arm out to keep Castiel from reaching in. "You're gonna get...oh."
Cas retracts his hand, holding the marshmallow in his hand. He's fine. Perfectly fine. The most he is, is confused. Other than that, he's perfectly and completely unscathed. Somehow, Sam and Dean had both forgotten that something like that wouldn't really hurt him. He's an angel, for crying out loud. And they somehow forgot that.
Smirking, Cas hands Sam the marshmallow, which is cooked perfectly for a s'more. Jack watches as Sam thanks Castiel, puts the marshmallow in between two slabs of chocolate and two graham crackers, and takes a huge bite out of it. Jack's eyes widen, and a smile settles across his face. After that, Sam and Dean teach him how to make the perfect s'more. It's a bit messy when he tries it, but finally he gets it all together. When he takes a bite, chocolate and marshmallow goo sticks all over his cheeks and chin.
"Jack, buddy," Sam starts, but he can't finish. He's too busy laughing.
Jack just grins innocently over at him and takes another bite. Then another. He makes a second s'more, not really bothering to clean his face. Dean shakes his head, but chuckles softly to himself. Sam and Cas just smile as they watch him.
"I like s'mores," Jack says around a mouthful of his third treat.

Victorian Leominster.  Law and Order - Hitchhikers murder child,Arson, Poachers, Borough Gaol and Magistrates Court
Tumblr media
Graham Rooke kindly provided this photograph via my brother. Graham’s Great Great Grandfather is shown first on the left in the back row.
Law and Order
The borough magistrates, who exercise separate jurisdiction, meet at the town hall every Thursday; and the county justices for the lower division of the hundred of Wolphy hold petty sessions at the county police station every Friday. The new county court meets monthly, and has superseded the ancient Court of Record. It is a polling place for the election of knights for the shire, and the mayor is the returning officer for the borough.
Most prosecutions were not carried out by the police, but by private individuals, normally the victims of the crime. Anyone who was thought to have committed a crime, was taken to the parish constable or magistrate by the person who caught them. Even in places where there was a proper police force, most prosecutions were still started by private citizens.
County Police Station and Magistrates' Room, Burgess street.- Mr. Thomas Dykes, Superintendent for Leominster and Wigmore Divisions. December 23rd 1891: Charles Saunders (aged 31) Charles Saunders was a blacksmith sentenced to death at Hereford Assizes for the murder of a young child.
Saunders had persuaded the parents of Walter Charles Steers (aged two) to let him look after the boy whilst they were in London. During May, Saunders and his girlfriend "tramped" (hitchhiked) to Leominster, using the child to help them beg for food and money. They took shelter in a disused cottage, and one night after Walter's crying had kept Saunders awake he picked the child up and murdered him. He buried the body under a pile of straw where it lay undiscovered for 16 weeks.
Saunders was convicted on the evidence of his girlfriend and hanged by the successor of James Berry, a Mr. James Billington. The execution had to be put back when Billington was delayed on his journey from Durham by thick fog. Billington arrived a little after 9am and after briefly checking the equipment he began the execution.
It was recorded that after the trapdoor fell the body swung from side to side and the arms seemed to twitch for several seconds. What crimes were common in Leominster? Incendiarism or what we know as Arson had been rare in rural areas but in 1843 and 1844 there were fifteen cases. Being found guilty of this offence would mean a  very long prison sentence or even transportation. These fires were aimed at Farmers and Landowners as protests against food prices and working conditions. My father turned out to many farm fires in 1960s as a part time fireman in Leominster. However, these were all cases of pure vandalism. Poaching was a very common offence. The’ peasantry’ as they were called by the landowners and farm tenants viewed wildlife as being ‘ fair game’. Why should anyone claim ownership of wild animals like deer, rabbits and trout? One Thomas Hinton was sentenced to two months in gaol for laying wires and was discovered by a gamekeeper who he promptly hit over the head. He was fortunate  not to be transported. A James Haines was fined 5 shillings for laying traps. A Richard Smith was fined 10 shillings for hunting with a dog. The magistrates were also the landowners. Magistrates often gave lenient sentences because they knew that large elements of the local population saw nothing wrong with poaching and in fact thought it a part of being English. There was a deep seated feeling that just because you own the land it did not mean you owned all the wild animals on it. In 1846 Charles Nicholls was caught laying lines for trout in the River Pinsley. He  promised not to do it again at the Leominster Petty Sessions and was discharged after paying costs. Many an enjoyable hour was spent  by my friends and I along the Pinsley Brook. There were few trout in the 1960s  but plenty of minnows, cray fish and bully heads.  As it flowed beside Vicarage Street and at the foot of Hampton Gardens in the 1960s before being enclosed and covered with tarmac. Magistrates would rather give fines and give plenty of time for the convicted to pay. Local Gaols would have always been full otherwise. Not all poaching was petty crime. A gang of poachers lead by John Price and Edward Probert who had ‘ infested ‘ the Leominster neighbourhood for several years. They attacked the High Sherriff and his deputies with large sticks, or bludgeons and beat Mt Davis the gamekeeper and his assistants. One of the gang had is ear cut off. Often these were not locals but gangs of vagabonds who settled in the area. Local poachers were largely well known and many Gamekeepers turned a blind eye as long as it did not get out of hand. 1851 the following could be found:  BOROUGH GAOL, New Street, Mr. John McCrohon, Superintendent.   THE COUNTY COURT is held at the King's Arms, in Corn Street; office in the Corn Market. John Morris Herbert, Esq., Judge, Thomas Watkin Maddy, Esq., Clerk; Mr. Robert Phillips, High Bailiff; Mr. George Thomas Robinson, Assistant Clerk. The County Magistrates' Meetings are also held here every Friday. As the Kings Arms was in Corn Street and extended back as far as Etnam Street it was host to many town activities. This included Dances, card socities and all the policing aspects. It was a short walk from the Gaol or Police Station in Burgess Street. By 1879 the following describes arrangements of the law; The borough magistrates (six in number) have separate jurisdiction, and hold petty sessions at the Town-Hall every Thursday at 11 a.m.; the county justices for the Leominster division meet at the county police station every alternate Friday at 12. The gaol, a neat brick edifice, erected in 1750, stands in New-street. The county police station is a modern building, erected on the site of the theatre, which last, while it stood, was an object of great interest, having been built in the 13th century. The borough police force consists of a superintendent, one sergeant, and six constables. The county justices for Leominster petty sessional division meet at the County Police station, Burgess street, every alternate Friday at twelve o'clock. This town is included in circuit 27 of the county courts; the sittings are held at the Town hall twice every month. The Leominster county court has jurisdiction in bankruptcy, and attached to it are the county court districts of Bishop's Castle, Kington, Knighton, Ludlow, and Presteigne.

The 16 X-factors of the Sweet 16
Tumblr media
A casual fan’s guide for who to watch in the Sweet 16
With the field of 68 fizzled down to just 16 teams, we can finally start to analyze who’s left, how they got here, and how they’ll keep advancing. The 16-game days of March Madness are over and now, with more breathing room in between tip-offs, we can finally see how freakin wild the opening rounds of the 2018 NCAA tournament were.
Had this story been written a week ago today, I would’ve felt safe prepping words on Miles Bridges’ need to assert his way through the paint to get Michigan State to the Elite Eight. I would have written about Kyle Guy’s task as the go-to scorer in Virginia’s offense, Trevon Bluiett’s need to take the reigns for Xavier and about Joel Berry and Theo Pinson shooting the lights out for UNC.
Somehow, all of those players are gone now, as are most of the familiar faces from this college basketball season. Trae Young, Mo Bamba, DeAndre Ayton and Michael Porter Jr all left in the first round, and Jaren Jackson and Collin Sexton joined them after the second.
The spotlight is there for the taking for this year’s overlooked talent.
In alphabetical order by team, here are the players to watch for on each of the remaining Sweet 16 teams, and how they can help their teams advance to the Elite Eight.
Gabe Devoe, Clemson
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Kansas
Position: Guard
Year: Senior
Clemson wins if: Devoe can out-duel Kansas’ Devonte Graham. Both the Jayhawks and Tigers have deep backcourts, so Clemson needs its 40 percent three-point shooter to be on-the-money to beat a superior opponent. Devoe has scored 22 points in each tournament game so far, and made 8-of-14 shots from deep in total.
Marvin Bagley III, Duke
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Syracuse
Position: Forward/Center
Year: Freshman
Duke wins if: Bagley can fight his way through ‘Cuse’s zone defense — especially past 7’2 center Paschal Chukwu — and dominate the paint like he has all season. Bagley will be an NBA lottery pick in this summer’s draft, and needs to prove he’s the best player on the court and finish over Cuse’s length, and power through their traps. It won’t be an easy task.
Phil Cofer, Florida State
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Gonzaga
Position: Forward
Year: Senior
FSU wins if: Cofer can shoot over the length of the Bulldogs’ bigs. On four attempts this year, the 6’8 son of a former Pro-Bowl NFL linebacker is shooting 39 percent from deep. He only made one of his five attempts from three (10 points) in a close win over Xavier, and the Noles will need more from him against to upset the Zags.
Johnathan Williams, Gonzaga
Tumblr media
Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
Sweet 16 opponent: Florida State
Position: Forward
Year: Senior
Gonzaga wins if: Williams dominates the boards and scores like he has been. Williams made a name for himself in last year’s Final Four run, and now, with Zach Collins and others gone, he’s assumed a lead role. He leads the team in scoring at 14 per game, and also has help from Rui Hachimura, Zach Norvell Jr. and Killian Tillie. The Zags are deep with Williams leading the way.
Devonte’ Graham, Kansas
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Clemson
Position: Guard
Year: Senior
Gonzaga wins if: Graham shoots the lights out. The senior is having a spectacular final season, and was already awarded the Big 12 Player of the Year Award. He fires at 40 percent from deep, and if he can make plays off the dribble, it’s over for Clemson.
Barry Brown Jr. , Kansas State
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Kentucky
Position: Guard
Year: Junior
KSU wins if: Brown can exploit Kentucky’s guard deficiencies and force turnovers. Brown averages two steals per night, and has one of the best steal rates in the nation. If Kentucky’s freshmen get sloppy, K-State can steal another one.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Kentucky
Tumblr media
Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images
Sweet 16 opponent: Syracuse
Position: Guard
Year: Freshman
Kentucky wins if: Gilgeous-Alexander can outlast KSU’S pesky defense, and continue to be Kentucky’s leading scorer. SGA has put himself into the NBA Draft lottery conversation averaging 23 points, seven rebounds and 6.5 assists in two tourney games. He’ll face the toughest defense he’s seen on Thursday.
Clayton Custer, Loyola Chicago
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Nevada
Position: Guard
Year: Junior
Loyola Chicago wins if: Custer maintains his 46 percent three-point shooting, and maybe hits another game-winner. Both Loyola Chicago and Nevada have made it further in the tournament than even they could’ve hoped for, and this will be a grind. Custer needs to step up even more than he did in the opening two rounds.
Mo Wagner, Michigan
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Texas A&M
Position: Forward/Center
Year: Junior
Michigan wins if: Wagner can assert himself among A&M’s many physical bigs. He’ll need to remain a deep-ball threat to lure the Aggies’ bigs out and open lanes for his teammates, and play physical enough to secure boards down low. This is Wagner’s biggest test to date.
Caleb and Cody Martin, Nevada
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Loyola Chicago
Position: Forward
Year: Junior
Nevada wins if: The Martins crash the boards and score in the mid-range like they have in the opening two rounds. The identical twins were downright beastly in the win against Cincy. Cody, the brother who wasn’t the MWC Player of the Year, dropped 25 points and seven assists, and his brother had 10 points and five rebounds. They’ll need to repeat that.
Matt Haarms, Purdue
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Texas Tech
Position: Center
Year: Freshman
Purdue wins if: Haarms plays lockdown defense and protects the rim. The 7’2 freshman is only starting because his 7’1 teammate, Isaac Haas, broke his elbow in the opening round. He was brilliant in a second-round win over Butler. Can he do it again?
Paschal Chukwu, Syracuse
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Duke
Position: Center
Year: Junior
Syracuse wins if: Chukwu protects the paint from a barrage of supersized bigs in Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter. The NBA Draft lottery-bound forwards both can take over a game, but if 7’2 Chukwu’s height and length can throw them out of rhythm, ‘Cuse can steal another win and shock everyone again.
Robert Williams, Texas A&M
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Michigan
Position: Forward/Center
Year: Sophomore
A&M wins if: Williams, along with Tyler Davis and D.J. Hogg, clog the lane and force Mo Wagner to shoot tough shots. The Aggies are here because of their defense, and if they’re able to contain the Wolverines’ top scoring threat, they can pull off another upset. Williams is averaging 2.6 blocks per game.
Keenan Evans, Texas Tech
Tumblr media
Sweet 16 opponent: Purdue
Position: Guard
Year: Senior
Tech wins if: Evans attacks the hoop, gets to the free throw line, and forces Matt Haarms into foul trouble. Evans is one of the best in the nation at getting to the stripe, averaging seven attempts per game. He hits them at an 81 percent rate, too. He’ll need to be assertive and help get Purdue’s 7’2 replacement big off the floor for as long as possible.
Jevon Carter, West Virginia
Tumblr media
Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images
Sweet 16 opponent: Villanova
Position: Guard
Year: Senior
WVU wins if: Carter can shutdown Jalen Brunson, or at least force him to commit turnovers. Carter has 11 steals in two games — along with 49 points — and is undeniably the engine that makes the Mountaineers move. Can he succeed against the best offense in the country?
Mikal Bridges, Villanova
Tumblr media
Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images
Sweet 16 opponent: West Virginia
Position: Forward
Year: Junior
Nova wins if: Bridges can leak out on WVU’s traps, and make them pay by attacking the rim and making open threes. He roasted Alabama when he was given any space, finished 5-of-8 from deep, scoring 23 points on 16 shots. If Nova can break the press, WVU is in trouble.

SOUTHERNISM OF THE WEEK
Sweet as pie: A descriptive term referring to a person with a pleasant nature. A high compliment when conferred by a Southerner, for we all love pie, and all good pie must contain its weight in sugar.
A cold wind swept through Oxford this past weekend. It had nothing to do with chilled political relationships or tepid sports endeavors.
Literally, the temperature dropped from balmy spring-like stickiness to a brisk autumnal dance of the falling leaves.
It was about time.
At last, the weather is season-appropriate and the clock has fallen back to its natural state. Just in time for the holiday season, a person can rightfully turn one’s thoughts to hot toddies, pumpkin-spiced everything and picturesque fires.
The weather change inspired me to start hustling for the holidays. And while compiling my belated list of dishes to make for Thanksgiving, I chuckled over a recent email exchange with my Canadian buddy Fern. Poor Fernie—all her family cookbooks were boxed for a move, and she needed my versions of several obligatory Thanksgiving “molded salads” (a.k.a. congealed gelatin-based salads). From past experience, she knew our Southern recipes were identical to her Canadian mom’s and auntie’s, albeit known by different names.
That started my own wheels turning as I contemplated the increasing globalization of food culture and how it reflects who our people are, where we came from, and where we seem to be going. It’s the sort of thing our Southern Foodways Alliance colleagues contemplate with every written or oral word seeping out of the Ole Miss Center for the Study of Southern Culture.
Foodways have merged so much that a person could experience related flavors whether dining in Marrakech or Manhattan, El Paso or Copenhagen.
Take, for instance, cauliflower, one of the trending foods of 2017.
More specifically, let’s talk about cauliflower soup, made from roasted, steamed or boiled cauliflower puréed with seasonings of salt, butter and, in most instances, first-rate chicken stock. Depending on personal taste, the soup may contain cream and other ingredients such as sautéed and puréed onions. Seasonings in the soup are tweaked according to cultural preference.
In March in San Francisco, Hubby and I, along with Fern and her hubby, Graham, dined on a lip-smacking chicken stock-based cauliflower soup prepared by a personal chef. Trained in culinary school and apprenticed for years under an Indian master chef, he embellished the San Francisco cauliflower soup with cauliflower florets sautéed in browned butter and vadouvan spice, a subtle Franco-Indian seasoning.
On a cold November day in Stockholm’s Old Town, we dined on a vegetarian version of cauliflower soup. This equally rib-sticking variation contained coconut milk and apple cider vinegar instead of chicken broth. Delicately flavorful, the Stockholm version omitted the curry usually added to coconut milk-enhanced Thai and Indian offerings.
We skipped the cauliflower in Copenhagen but devoured the nightly smorgasbord-style hors d’oeuvres prepared in our hotel for peckish travelers. One of my favorites was a Danish interpretation of every red-blooded American’s favorite party dip—Mexican guacamole. The Copenhagen version was piped as a swirled paste atop 1 1/2-inch blini rounds and topped with Italian-style roasted red pepper strips.
In fact, wherever we ate in London, Berlin, Copenhagen and Stockholm during our recent fall trip, we noticed a confluence of Mexican, Italian, Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine. Fusion food was offered alongside “American” staples of nachos, burgers and wraps.
Desserts were another matter. There’s a reason why we Americans have appropriated French macarons, Franco-Catalan crème brûlèe, Italian tiramisu, Danish pastry and strudel. Even in Berlin, I experienced déjà vu over a raw apple “cake” dessert remarkably similar to my Appalachian kinfolks’ fresh apple cake.
Travel provides a wonderful lens through which to reflect upon one’s roots and, in the case of Hubby and me, be thankful for what we have and where we live. As fun as it was, I returned home from this latest trip just in time for Thanksgiving, grateful to be an American. I’m doubly grateful for the fusion of the many foodways brought here by our immigrant ancestors, who most definitely were not from around here.
The recipes listed below reflect a few of our recent global food fusions. Why not try them at this year’s holiday gatherings?
As my friend Fernie says, “It’s time to tweak tradition, eh?”
SAN FRANCISCO CAULIFLOWER SOUP
Ingredients Unsalted butter 1 yellow onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, sliced thin 1 medium head of cauliflower, sliced thin; reserve a handful of florets 3 medium sunchokes, peeled and sliced thin White pepper Kosher salt 1 to 1 1/2 c. white wine Chicken stock 1 c. crème fraiche or heavy cream Canola oil 2 T. salted butter *Vadouvan spice
Directions: Melt unsalted butter in a skillet and add onions. Simmer until transparent. Add remaining vegetables, seasonings and wine. Simmer on medium-low heat until mixture reduces.
Add chicken stock to almost cover mixture. Bring mixture to a boil and cover, simmering 10-15 minutes.
Stir in crème fraiche or heavy cream and remove from burner. Purée mixture with immersion blender until smooth. Keep warm.
Heat canola or grapeseed oil in skillet until oil dances. Add reserved cauliflower florets and toss. Add salted butter and heat until butter turns brown, tossing florets. Add vadouvan seasoning and continue tossing in browned butter. Add a splash of water to browned mixture to foam it up. Remove from heat and reserve. Plate the soup into cream soup bowls and sprinkle with brown-butter florets. Top with a sprinkling of minced fresh chives.
*Vadouvan: You can make this seasoning with 1 T. powdered garlic and curry, 1 tsp. powdered cumin, cardamom, turmeric and mustard, 1/2 tsp. each red pepper flakes and nutmeg, and 1/4 tsp. ground cloves. (Ground fenugreek seeds are optional, but desirable.)
STOCKHOLM VEGETARIAN CAULIFLOWER SHOOTERS Ingredients 1 T. olive oil 2 medium yellow onions, diced 1 bay leaf 1 1/4 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. ground turmeric 1/2 tsp. ground coriander 1/8 tsp. ground cardamom, optional Dash of ground black pepper 1/8 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes  4 garlic cloves, minced 32 oz. carton (4 c.) vegetable stock 1/2 c. water 1 large head cauliflower, chopped 1 c. canned coconut milk 1 T. apple cider vinegar Fresh dill, optional Fresh ground black pepper
Directions: Heat the olive oil in larger stock pot on medium-low. Add onions and next eight ingredients. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until onions become transparent, about 10 minutes. Stir in garlic; sauté another few minutes.
Add broth and cauliflower; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce to a simmer and cook 15-25 minutes until cauliflower is tender.
Remove from heat and puree, using immersion blender until silky smooth. Add coconut milk and vinegar. Bring back to simmer but do not boil. Serve hot, topped with fresh dill and ground black pepper.
GUACAMOLE CORN BLINI BITES
Feel free to make mini pancakes, but these corn muffin cakes pair really well with the guacamole.
Ingredients: 8.5 oz. box of corn muffin mix 1/2 c. whole milk 1 large egg, beaten Extra light olive oil for shallow frying Guacamole (omit the chopped tomatoes) Roasted red bell peppers, cut into strips Chives
Directions: Whisk the muffin mix, milk and egg until smooth. Heat about 2 tablespoons of oil in skillet on medium heat until oil shimmers. Carefully drop batter by the teaspoon onto skillet, separating each by about 2 inches. Flip when bubbles appear on tops and bottoms are golden—about 2 minutes. Cook about 1 additional minute.
Remove carefully to serving platter. Continue making the corn blini, adding oil to hot skillet as needed. Pipe guacamole onto each. Top with two crossed strips of roasted red pepper and chives.
FRESH APPLE SHEET CAKE
Use a 9 x 13 inch baking pan, ungreased. This is an Americanized easy interpretation of German raw apple cake.
Ingredients: 15.25 oz. box of yellow cake mix 1 stick (1/2 c.) salted butter, softened 1/4 c. light brown sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 6-7 apples (I use a bag of 7 Sweet Tango apples) 1 c. sour cream (low-fat is ok) 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 large egg 1/2 c. golden raisins, optional 1 c. chopped pecans or walnuts, optional
Directions: Heat oven to 350˚F. Combine cake mix, softened butter, brown sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl until crumbly. It makes about 3 to 3 1/2 cups. Reserve 2 cups. Spread remaining crumble into bottom of pan and press lightly.
Peel apples and shred on large hole side of box grater. Pick out any stray apple seeds. Combine with optional raisins and pecans if desired. Spread apples evenly in pan over crumbled base.
Beat sour cream and egg together until blended. Spread evenly over the apples. Sprinkle evenly with reserved crumble mixture. Bake 25-35 minutes, until topping is light golden-brown. Remove from oven to cool before slicing. Feel free to cover when cooled and refrigerate up to 2 days. Serve topped with whipped cream and mint leaves. Feel free to drizzle with berry liqueur such as Chambord (raspberry). Yields 16 servings. Freezes well.

Things to do in Montréal: March 10 to 16
Montréal adds a twist to the classics this week: Roger Waters’ The Wall becomes an opera, winter festival MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE has us ice sliding and zip-lining downtown, butterflies float through an indoor garden, and Arcade Fire’s Kanaval Kanpe brings the tropics to the city.
Lights and action
Arts, culture and fine dining festival MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE makes downtown even brighter until March 11 with an exciting program of performing arts, inspired fine dining options and the free and family-friendly outdoor site at Place des Festivals, where you’ll find great local food and drink, from Québec cheeses to Cabral porto, live music and performances such as X-Lumina, an illuminated Ferris wheel, the super-fun urban ice slide, mini slide and zip line, and classic Canadian sport Curling en lumière. Take a walk around downtown’s Quartier des Spectacles to see the high-tech interactive light art of Illuminart or explore the underground city to see Art Souterrain‘s miles of art installations.
Montréal’s Spring Break
If you’re here to let loose, follow our guide to restaurants, bars and parties for spring break in Montréal, but if you’re here with your kids, we’ve got you covered too with all kinds of things to do for families during spring break. Spend an afternoon ice sliding, skating and playing games at Mammouth Village at the Olympic Stadium Esplanade or frolic among the butterflies indoors at the nearby Botanical Garden’s Butterflies Go Free event, part of the Montréal Space for Life‘s many activities. Bota Bota boat-spa opens its water circuit to kids 10 years and up, March 6-10.
