HEADCANON               GARLAN ; FAMILY VS THE REST OF THE WORLD I’ve had various conversations now with @goldenngore​ about the sheer amount of differences and few similarities between Loras and Garlan, including the roles they ultimately play within their family, and the two vastly opposite temperaments these two bring to the plate. Loras undoubtedly is the fire starter of House Tyrell, with an obvious “fuck around and find out” attitude, especially after Renly’s death. he’s also the one Mace deliberately pushed into the limelight at any given opportunity. compared to that, Garlan appears almost shy ; a knight that doesn’t like showing off, largely steers clear of tourneys, and has no interest in making a name for himself. it is partially his ( especially for a Tyrell ) very humble nature, but also, I believe, the role he is supposed to play within the family           because we all know that all four Tyrell kids, at the end of the day, are puppets on Mace’s string and they each have certain expectations attached to them, that need to be met in order to be worthy of affection. Loras is the show pony. Garlan the ultimate enforcer of everything dumb, dangerous, and outright delusional Mace and/or Olenna cook up. 

I’ve told Frankenstein before and I stand by it forever: Garlan knows every plan his father and grandmother concoct. every single one, in every detail. he knew about the Purple Wedding, about the potential plans they had for Sansa, about the fake marriage of Margaery and Renly, about the deliberate closing off of the Roseroad to let King’s Landing starve and later appear as the saviours bringing food back to the kingdom, about the dumbass idea of sticking Garlan into Renly’s old armour to scare the piss out of Stannis .  .  . everything. they can trust him with all of that, because they both know that Garlan will silently follow his orders and remain loyal to his family, no matter what. it’s what’s been drilled into him since childhood, and I firmly believe that whenever Garlan didn’t behave accordingly as a child, both Mace and Olenna “punished” him through love deprivation. a horrible thing for a boy that is as naturally affectionate as Garlan. they thus raised him to become the ultimate people pleaser, always agreeable, always saying yes, always there whenever someone calls, always ready to put his own needs and dreams aside for the wellbeing of his family             and he resents them for it. ( anyone else smelling a Jaime parallel here btw? no, just me. alright. ) the stupid thing about people pleasing is that it’s intrinsically selfish. Garlan doesn’t perform the obedient puppy routine because he believes his father is right or because he loves him so much ; no, he goes all the way because he fears what his family may think of him if he doesn’t. he hates doing what he does, but he is entirely terrified of being criticised or discarded if he doesn’t. he cannot and will not look bad. it’s not part of his MO. now Loras thinks it’s a weakness on Garlan’s part. that “yes and amen” approach he runs, that makes him weak in Loras’ eyes and probably in the eyes of others, too, but the funny thing is that Garlan, objectively speaking, is the second most outspoken and brave member of his family as well. he is more tactful than Loras, but he has absolutely no issue to bump heads with someone else            even occasionally going against the rest of his family, when his own conviction tells him that what his family does is absolutely not warranted. the best example for that is Sansa. Sansa who, after the planned marriage to Willas falls apart, suddenly finds herself shunned by the formerly oh-so-supportive, oh-so-loving Tyrells doting on her at every turn, giving her false hope to escape a horrible situation ; and dropping her like a hot potato the moment she is no longer of use. it is Garlan, as the only member of his family, who is still publicly kind to her. “Lady Sansa.” Ser Garlan Tyrell stood beside the dais. “Would you honor me? If your lord consents?” The Imp’s mismatched eyes narrowed. “My lady can dance with whomever she pleases.” Perhaps she ought to have remained beside her husband, but she wanted to dance so badly... and Ser Garlan was brother to Margaery, to Willas, to her Knight of Flowers. “I see why they name you Garlan the Gallant, ser,” she said, as she took his hand. he even joked at his own expense, only to coax a little bit of laughter out of Sansa, and reassured her that Tyrion, overall, wasn’t a bad match. better than Loras, at least. Garlan is filled with kindness and he is ready to show it to those he believes need it the most. even if it goes against the overall behaviour of his family. “My lady wife is most concerned for you,” he said quietly, one such time. “Lady Leonette is too sweet. Tell her I am well.” “A bride at her wedding should be more than well.” His voice was not unkind. “You seemed close to tears.” “Tears of joy, ser.” “Your eyes give the lie to your tongue.” Ser Garlan turned her, drew her close to his side. “My lady, I have seen how you look at my brother. Loras is valiant and handsome, and we all love him dearly... but your Imp will make a better husband. He is a bigger man than he seems, I think.” he is kind and supportive to Sansa, as well as to Tyrion, whom he repeatedly reassures and tells him he is meant to do great things and that people wrongfully underestimate him. he also seems more than happy to potentially attract the wrath of other people in the room for standing with the “shunned ones”, and yes, that includes Olenna and Mace. not only that, however. Garlan also is one of very, very few people who has openly, publicly, called Joffrey out. not once, twice. without batting an eye. he first called him at breakfast before his wedding, publicly schooling him in how rare the book was he had just destroyed, heavily implying that Joffrey’s behaviour was dumb and unnecessary. at the same time, Garlan showed how smart and educated he is himself, unlike Joffrey, obviously. second time happened shortly before Joffrey’s death, after he had dumped a chalice of wine on Tyrion’s head. “How do you like that, Imp?” Joffrey mocked. Tyrion’s eyes were on fire. He dabbed at his face with the back of a sleeve and tried to blink the world back into clarity. “That was ill done, Your Grace,” he heard Ser Garlan say quietly. did he call Joffrey out because, as I believe, he knew he would die that day? possibly. I will forever believe that Garlan’s attempt at “saving” Joffrey by simply patting him on the back while he was choking was a farce to make his family look innocent, more than an actual attempt to save his life, but he still ran a risk of it all not working out and Joffrey calling for his head to be chopped off, had he survived. he did it anyways, not to bully Joffrey, but to defend Tyrion. would anyone else do that? probably not. Garlan has clear-cut ideas of what is right and what is wrong. he is happy to cross lines for his family, knowing that what he is doing isn’t right and shouldn’t happen, but there are many occasions, when he’ll ignore his own conscience and sell his own integrity because his family demands it of him. but there are still times when he sees a wrong being committed that is so awful, that he will step in and call it out no matter whom it might upset. Garlan never acts out of selfishness, he only ever acts to help others. and the increasingly ruthless and, frankly, stupid behaviour of Mace, coupled with Garlan’s new family ( aka new loyalty ) he is meaning to build with Leonette, may just drive Garlan out of that tight-knit net that is House Tyrell, and he will begin to rebel more and more. subtly and politely ofc, but I cannot see it any other way. like I just today said to Frankenstein, Mace made the mistake of allowing Garlan to find a new family, and he’s gonna regret that. especially because sweet, kind Leonette is the only person who loves him unconditionally. Garlan isn’t weak or timid or obedient. he simply desires kindness, not only towards himself, but others as well. unfortunately, it is ( for now ) thus easy to bully him into submission by feeding him said kindness in little bites and threatening to take it away again, should he misbehave. if you are important to him, he will go out of his way to be “lovable” for you. to be deserving of love and affection. if you’re unimportant to him, he will publicly but politely shame the living hell out of you because you obviously deserve it.
