a soft breeze blows past you, sending shivers up your spine. the sky is painted the most beautiful orange and purple, the sun almost ending its descent on the horizon, signalling the end of the day. a small smile graces your face, one that you didn’t even realize has made its way over as a flurry of memories from the past few months entered your head.

when you had first moved in at apartment 5c, never in your wildest dreams did you think about just how much your roommates would mean to you. in all honesty, you were only looking for a place to sleep. it didn’t matter all too much who you would live with. but wonwoo, jihoon, jun, and soonyoung had quite the hold on you. how could they not? especially when they’ve been the cause of so much light and laughter; your mind takes you to study dates with wonwoo, late night walks with jihoon, karaoke sessions with soonyoung, two am cereal gossip sessions with jun. you wouldn’t trade your time with them for anything else. 

“what’s got you smiling like that, hm?”

a familiar voice falls on your ears, feeling a presence beside you. just like that, your heart beats a little quicker. your breath grows a little shorter. your smile grows a little wider. you didn’t have to turn to face this person, you know exactly who it is. only one person could make you feel this way.

“would you believe me if i told you i was thinking about you?” your voice remains soft, but a teasing tone envelops your words.

a light chuckle moves past wonwoo’s lips and from the corner of your eyes, you can see the slightest hints of a blush begin to form on his cheeks. a warm fluttery feeling fills your chest, threatening to spill out entirely. how could the sound of one person’s laughter make you feel like this?

well, you knew the answer. your feelings for him have never been clearer. 

“maybe,” wonwoo replies, “don’t get my hopes up though. i’m already in deep, you don’t have to be this sweet to me.”

you gently nudge his side with your own, rolling your eyes as you tried your best to ignore your heartbeat ringing in your ears. it’s almost deafening, you don’t think you can hear anything else. not the sound of the birds that blew above your heads, nor the waves that crashed on the shore. 

both of you keep your gazes ahead, but you feel his arm brush against yours. his hand is merely inches away from yours, a quiet sigh escaping your lips. you can’t help but sneak another glance at him as another gentle gust of wind blows between the two of you. it lightly tousles his hair, and it takes everything in your power not to reach a hand out and brush it back. there’s a small, ghost of a smile present on his lips as he takes in the view in front of him. there’s no denying it anymore. you were only fooling yourself when you tried to convince yourself he was just a roommate.  

wonwoo has always been upfront about his feelings, about what he wants for the two of you. perhaps it’s time that you were too. 

“i’m really glad i met you guys.” you breathe out, the corner of your mouth twitching upwards. you don’t think you’ve ever told them how thankful you are for them, but you hope that your actions were enough to let them know. “i can’t imagine what my life would be like if i didn’t meet all of you…if i didn’t meet you. i think whoever is up there pulling all the strings in the universe is on my side.”

the latter part of your statement comes out in a whisper, like you were saying it more to yourself than to him. wonwoo’s breath hitches, completely overwhelmed. by your words. by the extent of his own emotions. he can’t find it in himself to look at you for fear that he’d lose the little ounce of control he was holding onto.

when you told him you liked him, he was over the moon. unfortunately, it came with the caveat of you telling him not to say that he liked you back. you needed time to figure things out, and he was more than willing to give you that time. so he doesn’t tell you of his feelings, as long as it meant that you stay by his side. wonwoo doesn’t tell you he likes you, but he hopes his actions are more than enough to let you know that he does. every ounce of affection and adoration that he held, he poured into every cup of coffee, every trip to the museum, every hoodie he lends you, every hug and every head pat.

wonwoo can’t look at you, because he knows what he’d do. when he sees the golden haze of the sun fall on your features, the soft look in your eyes, the smile in your face, he knows he’d just let all the emotions he had for you come to the surface. and he promised you that he’d wait. he wouldn’t do anything until you were ready. he can wait because he lo-

 “i’m in love with you.”

your voice breaks through his train of thought. wonwoo’s eyes grow wide, this couldn’t be a dream, right? this is a dream. it must be. he turns to face you, wide-eyed and panicked, unable to process what’s happening. his hands begin to shake, only stopping when you reach out and grab them.

your hands are soft against his skin, and you’re looking at him with an undeniable fondess in your eyes that it makes him breathless. the entire world falls away, he can only focus on you.

“jeon wonwoo. i want to be with you.” you let out a small laugh before adding, “you absolute idiot.”

wonwoo takes his hands off yours and places them on your cheeks, bringing your face closer to his as his eyes flutter shut. just before he completely places his lips on yours, when they’re just millimetres away, there’s a small beat of hesitation on his end. one that you quell by making the final move to kiss him. 

his lips move against yours, soft and gentle. careful, yet passionate. it’s the kind of kiss that takes both of your breaths away, one that finally lets go of months of pining and watching from afar. at some point he smiles into the kiss, unable to help himself from keeping in the surge of happiness that flooded his veins.

neither of you are sure who pulls away first, but wonwoo rests his forehead on yours, completely and utterly breathless. “yn, i love you. so so much. you have no idea how much i-”

he stops himself, every single word in his vocabulary escaping him. all wonwoo knows is that he loves you, and now he can finally tell you. 

you laugh, feeling the warmth of his breath against your skin at his proximity. before you could part your lips to let out a reply, a booming voice yells out from the distance, 

“FINALLY!!! ARE YOU GUYS SEEING THIS?”

"this seat taken?"

a voice falls on your ears and you look up to find no other than joshua hong standing by your table, the same kind smile on his face and gentle look in his eyes that you have grown accustomed to present on his features. you couldn’t help but smile back, gesturing to the empty seat on the other side of your table. 

“don’t worry, i won’t be bothering you for too long. i’m just waiting on my order, then i’ll go.” he makes himself comfortable, eyes briefly scanning around the crowded coffee shop before they landed back on you.

the campus cup was always the busiest in the afternoons. every single table is filled with a student working on some new paper or report, fuelled by a cup of coffee brought to them every half an hour by one of the baristas. 

“you’re not working today?” you turn to ask joshua, raising a brow. usually, you’d find him working the rounds, weaving from table to table and flashing his signature smile at his usual customers. perhaps if you didn’t insist on wonwoo to be the one to make you your drinks, you’d probably be swept up in his charm as well.

joshua leans back in his seat, letting out a tired, exaggerated sigh, “it’s my day off. why? miss my drinks already?”

“no chance.” you roll your eyes, bringing your mug up to your lips.

he shakes his head, a knowing look in his eyes, as if seeing right through you. “yeah, i know, you like the coffee wonwoo makes much better. even though both of us are basically doing the same thing that’s on the employee instruction manual.”

“you sure you’re doing the same thing? i think you’re missing a couple of steps.”

“whatever helps you sleep at night, yn.” joshua’s tone is teasing, his eyes scanning your face for any sort of reaction. but you keep your cool, keep your face as neutral as possible as you try to show not a single sign of being flustered. he continues, “you know, yn, i always prefer the tables by the windows. lots of sunlight streaming in. very nice…but you always pick this table by the register.”

“is there something wrong with that?” you narrow your eyes at him, “what are you trying so say, joshua?”

he shrugs his shoulders before tilting his head towards one of the counters, where wonwoo was currently fixing up a drink, “what’s going on between the two of you? i mean- there must be some reason i’ve been catching wonwoo’s gaze on this table for the past couple of minutes…”

“what?” you choke on air, his words making you look back at wonwoo who did— in fact — had his gaze already on your table. your eyes meet for the briefest of seconds before both of you turn to look away. your attention is back on joshua, who had the beginnings of a smirk playing on his lips. “nothing is going on.”

joshua is practically leaning across the table, expression eager and waiting, you can’t help but let out a small chuckle at his actions.

“didn’t think you were the gossiping type.” you tease, hoping that it would somehow change the subject of your conversation. unfortunately, to no avail.

he raises a brow, “nothing’s going on between you and wonwoo? you’re absolutely sure?”

you nod, hoping that the laugh that escapes your lips doesn’t come out as nervous as you feel, “nothing’s going on.”

“riiiiight.” the way he says the word, drawing it out, makes you think that he doesn’t believe you. and he doesn’t, so he leans in even closer, challenging you. “if nothing’s going on, then…you wouldn’t mind if i asked you out. on a date. right now.”

your eyes widen, letting out a series of disbelieving scoffs and nervous chuckles. “what? are you serious? is this a prank?”

“not a prank.” joshua leans back in his seat once more, crossing his arms in front of his chest and giving you a nonchalant shrug, “if nothing’s going on, then there shouldn’t be anything wrong with you going out with me.”

a silence falls between the two of you, and you have to force yourself to look at anywhere but the stupid smirk that’s currently plastered on his lips. your brows knit together, and just as you part your lips to ask what in the world he was thinking, a presence looms over the two of you.

“hey joshua, here’s your order.”

wonwoo’s voice falls on your ears once more, he sends you a soft — barely even there — smile before turning his attention back to joshua and handing him a paper bag. 

“thanks, anyways- i didn’t plan on staying here long so i’ll go.” joshua grins up at him before pushing his seat back, the sound of wood scraping against wood filling the air for the briefest of seconds. he grabs the paper bag and before turning to leave, joshua looks towards you, “and yn? think about what i asked, okay?”

you send him a nod in response and for a moment, you could feel wonwoo’s gaze on you. it doesn’t take much detective work to know what he’s thinking, or in this case, wondering : what did joshua ask you ? shaking your head, you gently poke his side and attempt to ease his worries with the most teasing voice you can muster, “trust me, you don’t want to know- don’t worry about it, okay?”

wonwoo’s gaze follows joshua’s retreating figure until he eventually walks past the cafe doors, he nods slowly, giving you another small smile when he turns his attention back towards you, “alright…are we still hanging out after my shift? i heard there’s going to be a little book fair in the campus square.”

“of course, i’ll wait for you.”
