Explanation of Evangelion character names because I'm bored.
Shinji Ikari (シンジ 碇) - Ikari (碇) meaning 'anchor'.
Asuka Langley Sohryu (アスカ ラングレー惣流) - Langley refers to an American Naval vessel from 20s/40s the 'USS Langley' and Sōryū (惣流) refers to a Japanese aircraft carrier 'Sōryū' (蒼龍) from the mid-1930s.
USS Langley (on the left) Soryu (on the right)
Rei Ayanami (レイ綾波) - Rei's first name came from Rei Hino from Sailor Moon as Kunihiko Ikuhara had worked on the series at the time and Rei was his favorite sailor scout. Anno and Ikuhara are close friends.
There are also a couple of references in Evangelion to Ikuhara's works such as Sailor Moon and Utena.
Sailor Moon reference
Revolutionary Girl Utena Reference
Ayanami (綾波), much like Asuka, is a reference to a Japanese naval vessel, 'Ayanami' (綾波). The 'Ayanami' vessel was used during World War One and was a Fubuki-Class Destroyer.
Japanese destroyer Ayanami (1929)
Misato Katsuragi (ミサト葛城) - Much like Rei and Asuka, Misato's surname 'Katsuragi' (葛城) is also a reference to a naval vessel from the World Wars. The 'Katsuragi' (葛城) Unyru-Class Aircraft carrier from the 1940s.
Katsuragi Aircraft Carrier
Kaworu Nagisa (カヲル 渚) - Nagisa (渚) means 'shore' or 'waters edge'.
