I was wondering if you have any tips for writing romance? I'm aro so it's hard to write it without it basically just coming off as best friends but sometimes they kiss lmfao 😭

Hm, this is a very good question! First, I'll admit, I'm not fully aro, I am atleast on the aro spectrum though? I'm very very particular about romantic love, and I know everyone is, however it is something that I struggle with. I love a lot more deeply platonically than I love romantically. So before everything: it is absolutely okay to write characters as besties but like they kiss too.

Mostly, I really project, especially for certain characters. I simply imagine what I like and roll with it.

However, a good starting point is figuring out their Love Language. Do they express their love physically? Do they prefer to hold their partner rather than give gifts to express affection? Or would they much rather clean the dishes, change the sheets, run errands. Or maybe they just love showering their partner in compliments! Love languages are a great building block into writing romance. Characters can also have multiple. Do not limit them to one love language. Love Languages are more like a spectrum, really? And they apply different in romantic and platonic aspects.

As an example, Plantonically, I love physical touch above all, but gift giving is a very very close second, as well as words of affirmation. Quality time is something I fall short on, as well as acts of service. However, Romantically, I really only love words of affirmation. I do not like it when my partner smothers me, in fact I have a very big aversion to touch.

The second thought to consider is what kind of love they are. There are five kinds of love: Agape (Unconditional Love), Eros (Passionate Love), Philautia (Self Love), Storge (Affectionate Love, normally platonical or familial), and Pragma (Enduring Love). Does your character focus more on themselves (not in a self-centered way) in the relationship? Or are they much more forgiving and hold their partner above all? Or perhaps, they find that absence DOES make the heart grow fonder. Perhaps they love their partner through all they've been through, good, bad, everything.

For example, the main character in my book loves his partner, he loves him with his whole heart, despite the fact that his hands are covered in blood. And this main character changes, he is a pacifist by heart, and really wishes only to be a writer. His father wants him to continue their proud viking royalty lineage. His partner supports him through all of it, their love is more of Agape. Both have very dirty, unclean hands. Both have sinned in eachothers eyes. And they love eachother regardless.

The last point builds off of that, as well. What does their love do? Does their love protect? Last? Heal? Strength? Calm? It is almost thr same idea as the last point, however it is good to take this into consideration. Does your character love to protect their partner? Would they find saving their partner, any sort of way, more passionate? Or does your character love so deeply, that even if they were killed, time and time again, they would search for their partner, in each and every life?

Building off my last example, the Prince wants his partner to heal from the things he does not talk about. So he loves him with such conviction, he let's him know rhat he is here, always and forever. And that they will make it through this. The Merc wishes to protect his partner, even if he must die trying. That was his goal before he knew the prince was... a prince. And that was his goal, after.

One more thing to take into consideration is what trope you wish to write, too. Book-wise, Fic-wise, anything. The Prince and the Merc's romance is a slow burn. Which is pretty popular and too be honest, is super fun to write. With them, it was mainly little things the Merc found himself thinking about. And he pushes away those thoughts until he can only think of how the Prince's hair has an ever so slight blue glint under the sun, how he bites his tongue when he writes, and how, despite everything, the Prince keeps his hair messy.

Oooone more idea to help. Who falls first, who falls harder? In my book, the Prince falls first, the Merc falls harder. It does not have to be exactly like this, either. Someone can fall first and harder.

I hope all of this helped, anon! Despite this blog existing to focus on romance... I am absolutely horrible at it.

mkx/11 yŭxuān & takeda are canonically in love and yŭxuān is the kinda guy both kenshi AND hanzo approve of. meanwhile they makin out sloppy style in the back of texas roadhouse or sumn

on another note. in the new era, liu kang and yŭxuān talk frequently which ends up with yŭxuān being aware of previous timelines and he slowly starts to remember some stuff cause his soul is like TIED tied to his previous timeline selves. so he has waited for takeda for a millenia.
