One of the intriguing storylines leading up to this game was Ezekiel Elliot facing his former team, the Dallas Cowboys. The first turnover occurred when Dante Fowler stripped the ball from him, resulting in a touchdown for the Cowboys as Leighton Vander Esch returned it to widen their lead by 15 points.

As if that wasn’t enough, towards the end of the second quarter, Jones made another ill-fated throw that landed directly into DaRon Bland’s hands for an interception returned for a pick-six. This unfortunate play put the New England Patriots in a massive 25-point deficit at halftime.

To make matters worse, Bland intercepted Jones once again at the start of the second half. With his team trailing by 28 points late in the third quarter, head coach Bill Belichick decided it was time for a change. He replaced Jones with backup quarterback Bailey Zappe for the remainder of the game.

It was undoubtedly an arduous outing for Jones as his poor decision-making and subsequent turnovers significantly impacted his team’s chances of mounting a comeback against Dallas. However, every athlete faces setbacks throughout their career, and it will be crucial for Jones to learn from this experience and bounce back stronger in future games.

In a remarkable display of skill and precision, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott delivered an outstanding performance, completing 28 out of 34 passes for a total of 261 yards. Quarterback Dak Prescott immediately targeted Myles Bryant, who had stepped in as Gonzalez’s replacement, and connected with CeeDee Lamb for Dallas’ first touchdown of the day. 

To compound their defensive woes, star linebacker Matthew Judon and safety Jabrill Peppers also succumbed to injuries late in the game and were unable to return. The Patriots later confirmed that Judan had sustained an elbow injury.

The severity of these injuries to Gonzalez, Judon, and Peppers remains unclear at this point. However, their absence is undoubtedly a significant blow for a Patriots defense that is already dealing with multiple key players sidelined due to injury. These additional setbacks come at an inconvenient time as New England heads into what feels like a crucial Week 5 matchup where they will need all hands on deck defensively.

The Patriots’ coaching staff and medical team will closely monitor the status of these players moving forward while exploring potential solutions within their roster depth. It will be essential for other members of the team’s defense to step up and fill these voids if necessary as they strive for success despite facing adversity on multiple fonts.

Missed Opportunities:

Here’s the thing, I don’t think NFL players are getting paid to “have fun.” In fact I think it’s probably not very fun at all, even for guys who absolutely love playing the game. I think the power, skill, talent, and physical ability required to have even a slight chance at playing in the NFL is so outside the average person’s ability to understand that they substitute the only level of the game they have any experience with: high school. Most students who play high school sports do so purely for fun, so the average person assumes this must always be true. Any criticism from that angle is inherently flawed and I want to say that at the outset.

I also think the era of the workhorse running back is over. 10,000 career rushing yards is probably unattainable (only 3 active players are close, and Derrick Henry has the most legitimate shot). There are too many running backs that are “good enough” and also young and less expensive.

All this to say that Melvin Gordon isn’t wrong, it’s a hard time to play running back, but the reality is that numerous players got huge contracts after 4-6 years of play and then immediately proved they were not worth that money to their teams. Quarterbacks, wide receivers, and linemen, of course, have shown the opposite.

I’m sensitive to the position. I love watching a great run game and specifically played that position myself because I wanted to be Emmitt Smith. Unfortunately the league has moved away from running backs who can’t catch passes, and owners can’t justify big money for the position anymore.

One Amari Cooper is worth a dozen Ezekiel Elliotts.

Cowboys lose game to Buccaneers, Dak Prescott to injury in disastrous opener

  By David Helman FOX Sports Dallas Cowboys Writer It's hard to imagine how a 19-3 drubbing could get worse, but true to form, the Dallas Cowboys pulled it off. Sunday night's abysmal loss to Tampa Bay was already one of this team's ugliest of the last decade. But their hope for a bounce back hinges on the health of Dak Prescott, and that hope took a hit late in the fourth quarter when Prescott exited the game after his hand collided with Shaq Barrett's helmet. Speaking to reporters after the game, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said that Prescott will need to have surgery on his thumb and will likely miss several weeks. Prescott himself said he'll schedule surgery on Monday morning. "Obviously, it's not what you want to hear," Prescott told reporters. "It's not the worst thing that's happened to me. It's just another bump in the road." That bit might be true. But at the very minimum, it's a significant injury to the most important member of the roster. Everything else about the Cowboys' season is on pause until more details are known, but it's a devastating loss at the tail end of a devastating loss. Not to add insult to injury, but Prescott left the game with 6:02 to play — and it's not as if the Dallas offense was functioning effectively when its franchise quarterback was healthy. The Cowboys drove the ball 54 yards for a field goal on the opening possession of the game, and literally nothing else worked the rest of the way. They finished with 244 yards of offense, 76 of those coming on the final two possessions, when the outcome was obvious. To put it in perspective, three points is the worst tally in a season opener since the Cowboys were shut out, 28-0, by the New Orleans Saints in 1989 — Jones' first season as owner and general manager. The difference is obviously that the 1989 team was in the beginning of a rebuild, having just selected Troy Aikman with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. That group finished 1-15. This 2022 roster is the one Cowboys brass selected to follow up a 12-5 campaign. This was the group that Jones said "need to be viable in the playoffs" to be considered successful back on the first day of training camp. It's important not to overreact to one week of a long season, but nothing about this Dallas offense looked viable in Week 1. Nowhere is that more obvious than the performance of Prescott and the Cowboys' skill players. The team famously traded away Amari Cooper in the spring, looking to replace that production with veteran receiver James Washington and third-round draft pick Jalen Tolbert. Washington broke his foot way back in August, sidelining him for the foreseeable future. And after an up-and-down summer, Tolbert was a healthy scratch for the season opener, leaving Prescott with journeyman Noah Brown and undrafted rookie Dennis Houston as his primary options behind CeeDee Lamb. To be fair to the receivers, Prescott played one of his worst games as a pro. When he exited for the night, Prescott had completed an abysmal 14-of-29 passes for 134 yards, lowlighted by a horrific interception that saw him try to fit a third down pass into triple coverage. To be fair to Prescott, the supporting cast was hardly helpful. Lamb, expected to make a leap into the NFL's elite during his third NFL season, was targeted 11 times on the night but finished with just two catches for 29 yards. Of those other nine targets, he dropped two. And while Brown did rack up yardage in the game's waning moments, he and Prescott failed to get on the same page when the deficit was still close. There's more, as you might expect when an NFL team scores three points. The Cowboys' offensive line, reshuffled following Tyron Smith's knee injury two weeks ago, endured a forgettable opener, as well. Of the team's 10 penalties on the night, six were committed by Dallas offensive linemen. The group also surrendered four sacks to a swarming Tampa Bay pass rush. Ezekiel Elliott — and to some degree, the line's run blocking — was as much of a bright spot as you might be able to muster. The running back averaged 5.2 yards per carry en route to a 52-yard night, but the lopsided nature of the game took him out of the equation early into the second half. The performance unfortunately overshadows what was actually a solid showing by the Dallas defense, expected to do some heavy lifting in Dan Quinn's second season as defensive coordinator. True, the Buccaneers did rush for 152 yards behind a wonderful performance from Leonard Fournette. But the Cowboys flustered Tom Brady into just 212 passing yards and an ugly interception, and the Bucs did finish with just one touchdown on the night. It looked for all the world like Micah Parsons would write the narrative of the game. On back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, Parsons sacked Brady on two separate third downs, forcing Tampa Bay to settle for field goal attempts — one of which was missed. Football romanticism would have you believe Parsons was holding the rope until Prescott could rally the offense, but it wasn't close to the case. Instead, this Dallas defense might have even more on its plate. The Cowboys have work to do on offense, and for the time being they'll be trying to fix it without Dak Prescott. Joe Burrow and Cincinnati's warp-drive offense arrive at AT&T Stadium in a week. That's a lot to figure out if they're going to prevent the season from heading off the rails. Name Predictions for Duggar-Dillard #3

The couple that was the greatest influence on my decision to start this blog is Jill and Derick Dillard. I have been considering what they might name their new baby boy ever since their pregnancy was announced. I think Jill and Derick are an especially fun couple to predict for given their previously established (or at least perceived to be) patterns. With that said, there’s a lot to consider, so let’s jump right in!

Previous Naming Information

When doing my name reveals, I always like to first look at the names of any previous children a couple has and even pets, if applicable. So what do we know about Jill and Derick (and their naming style) so far? Baby Dillard #3 will make his appearance this July, joining big brothers Israel David (b. 2015) and Samuel Scott (b. 2017). In their respective years of birth, Israel ranked #240 on the Social Security Administration’s list of most popular boys’ names, David ranked #18, Samuel ranked #21, and Scott ranked #484. Additionally, the Dillards unfortunately suffered a miscarriage in October 2021, who they named River Bliss. In 2021, the name River ranked #110 for boys and #151 for girls, while Bliss was not ranked. They also have a dog named Fenna, who they adopted in February 2021.

I have seen speculation that the Dillard’s are planning to spell out the name “Israel” using the first letters of their baby names, and this tracks so far: Israel, Samuel, River. If this is the case, it allows us to assume the next baby’s name will start with an A. Another observable pattern is that Israel and Samuel both end in -el, which means “God” in Hebrew. While Jill and Derick have not explicitly said this is a pattern they are following, it may be helpful to look at names ending in or at least containing -el. While River does not follow this pattern, it is possible Jill and Derick prioritized a gender neutral name that brought them comfort over any name pattern that they might use for their living children. It’s also possible that their naming styles have just changed in the last 5 years since they had a child. We will consider all of this when evaluating some preliminary predictions. But for now, we will say that we are likely looking at a Biblical name (emphasis on Old Testament), probably beginning with A-, and possibly ending in/containing -el. For the middle name, we will look at family names., especially those on Derick’s side. Israel’s middle name, David, is the middle name of Derick’s brother, Daniel David Dillard. Samuel’s middle name, Scott, is the maiden name of Derick’s paternal grandmother, Sue Scott Dillard.

Preliminary Predictions

That was a lot of ground to cover! Let’s start by looking at A- boys’ names in the Social Security Administration’s top 500 list, since I am fairly confident about that. (I would typically do the entire top 1000, but that would make this way too long, and the latter part of the list contains largely alternate spellings of names already included).

Here I was going to add a few more Biblical “A” names outside the top 500 that I thought could be a strong possibility, but the only one I think might fit is Abram. 

And just for fun, some Biblical names that don’t start with A or end in -el, but that I think really fit Jill and Derick’s vibe: Canaan, Ezra, Jonah, Judah, Levi, Micah, Noah, Silas.

And what about the middle? I am predicting that Jill and Derick will again choose a family honor middle name for their third son, likely from Derick’s side (especially given Jill’s strained relationship with her own father). I think it is very likely that this son’s middle name will honor Derick’s late father, probably using his first name, Richard. Derick’s brother had a son in February 2021 named Brady Richard, but I don’t think this will necessarily stop them. Another possibility might be George, the maiden name of Derick’s mother, Cathy George Dillard. Another possibility could be Michael, which is Derick’s middle name and also related to Michelle, Jill’s middle name.

My Final Predictions

If you have stuck with me for this long, congratulations and thank you! As for my final predictions, my top choices are Abel, Adam, Andrew, Asher, and Gabriel. I do really think this name will start with A, although I am not fully convinced it will end in -el. Even though it doesn’t end in -el, I have an unshakeable feeling that Jill and Derick will choose Asher for this baby. I think it sounds really cohesive with Israel and Samuel because of the “s” and “r” sounds it contains, and is Biblical (and specifically Old Testament) like the others without being one of the “obvious” Biblical names you think of like David, Matthew, or John. Additionally, it’s meaning of “happy” or “blessed” could be especially meaningful for Jill and Derick since this is a rainbow baby.

For the middle name, my top choice is Richard. Honestly I am surprised Jill and Derick did not use it for their first two sons, given how close Derick seemed to be with his dad. George or Michael are definitely plausible options too though. My best guesses are listed below from what I think is most to least likely.
