Welcome to the rhythm game scoreposting account of Kaps, the rising jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none! Also going by TopKaps and, most often recently, 2DKaps, this is my public hotspot where I've posted and archived eeeevery score I've gotten over the years! (or, at least scores that I've saved either on my phone, phone's camera, new PC, or Nintendo Switch).

Here in my humble abode, I've documented my near-daily experiences with a ton of such games, and for further ease of access, I've started using tags of my own for these such games to make them easier to view and sort through, in case you're stalking my scores for a tournament match or just looking through my progression!

#jailbirds au: aka Ounce of Prevention, my currently longest-running fic. kamado puts the rift travelers in prison and also emmet finally arrives in hisui after an ATROCIOUSLY long delay. it got wildly away from me and now there’s politics and every single minor character is involved

#galactic commander emmet: aka Fate of a Lost Comet. an extremely tense alliance is developed between cyrus, who wants to imprison the gods to rewrite reality, and his new commander and right-hand man, who is openly planning to sabotage him as soon as he gets what he wants: dialga on a leash.

#gligar emmet: aka Copy Corruption/silent loyalty. ingo's partner gliscor is actually emmet, who got stuck in a pokemon body upon arriving at the same time he did. they can’t communicate, but he’s very worried about his brother and is determined to stick with him

#pladoption au: Sinnoh is Silent. an au where akari falls like, IN the temple of sinnoh, and then gets really lost and then ingo finds her and he just keeps her. very minimal plot. mostly just fluff.

#immortal volo: fic: Nobody Writes Them Like They Used To. volo's immortal, but it’s been a few thousand years since hisui and he’s matured. he’s normal now. ...then he finds a pre-hisui ingo in unova.

#warden fusion au: wardens can fuse with their nobles. yeah like in steven universe. this one has a fic too: Covalent Bonding

#warden emmet au: emmet falls in hisui alongside ingo but lands in the wrong spot and they get separated. whoops!

#card fortune: did you know the miss fortunes used to be galaxy team? what if they took the protag (counterpart) with them when they left? ...akari, who’s akari, i only know the Bandit Card

#the magical misfortunes: spinoff of card fortune based on a couple random posts. they’re teen superheroes/magical girls in a modern setting

#origin visions au: due to consequences from falling through the spacetime rift unshielded, ingo now has prophetic dreams. sort of. it's complicated

#legends creation starters: instead of rowlet/cyndaquil/oshawott, when transporting the protagonist to hisui, arceus offers them a newly-created egg of one of the creation trio

#zoroark twins au: ingo is a unovan zoroark but still has amnesia, leading to some Complicated feelings about his human guise. meanwhile, emmet dies shortly after falling into hisui and comes back as a weird dog

#dragon champion ingo: ingo’s a chosen champion of the unova dragons but he forgot. one day he summons a deity by complete accident

#distortion subway au: gear station has always been a little Weird, actually

#rift ghost au: instead of falling through a rift into hisui, ingo gets trapped in the distortion world. wardens think the rifts are haunted. also, turns out staying in the distortion world long-term is not so good for human minds and souls

#twin dragon curse: ingo and emmet are descended from the original unovan heroes, and their bloodline is cursed

#guardian of ideals: arceus’ champion was sent to stop volo at any cost. ingo, zekrom’s champion and divinely-ordained guardian of ideals, was sent to save him.

#zero constructs: the area zero professor decides to use their time machine to recover Champion Dawn and Subway Boss Ingo from their place adrift in time. unbeknownst to them, and unfortunately for dawn and ingo’s loved ones, they do not have a time machine, they have a wish-granting machine, and it does NOT know how to put a dawn and ingo together

#magearna twins: “hey the shinies for regular/oc magearna look sort of familiar”

#platinum clan: spawned off of living history- the clan leaders and wardens never figure out how to get back to their original time and ingo becomes the de facto leader of both clans, eventually unifying them into one

#tringo: SUB-subclass of platinum clan. ingo goes to unova and gets turned into the three legendary dragons

#giratina champion ingo: much like the protagonist is arceus’s champion, ingo is giratina’s, unknowingly serving volo and giratina’s will

#emissary au: spawned off of giratina champion/living history—after the leaders vanish, ingo is approached by a shadowy entity that claims to be almighty sinnoh, and which makes it his priest. giratina Is Not Evil, and is in fact trying to protect reality from a greater threat... not that the rest of the world believes that

#anthro legends arceus: i’m doing a miserable job beating the furry allegations

#modern hisui: rei and akari, totally non-suspicious teen twins, wind up in a small town full of cryptid stories

#nobel lady sneasler: this one is fully a stupid joke that got out of hand. pseudo-1920s-au, pokemon all have recognized sapience, and the clans are two rival groups of scientists with their own pet theories, trying to prove themselves right in time for an upcoming award. get it. nobels

CROSSOVER STUFF:

#arc vessel: hollow knight au. ingo is the ghost and emmet is the hollow knight

#pokesouls: grab bag. some of it’s elden ring, some of it’s ds1, some of it’s ds2, some of it’s bloodborne. we are just vibing

#msaxpla: pla/mystery skulls animated crossover. unlike 99% of my crossovers this is a “the characters exist in the same universe” crossover bc we are hyperfixation multi track drifting. vivi is the protagonist, lewis died in hisui and became a zoroark, and arthur’s a depot agent doing really inadvisable things to one of the train engines (it’s fine emmet okayed it)

#subnautica au: ingo crashes on the degasi. several years later, emmet chases his voice recordings across the crater, hoping to catch up to him (and find him alive when he does) (they both end up fine dw)

#pla dhau: submas/pla dishonored au. no listen listen. ingo and emmet were twin princes, but one family assassination attempt and several years later, ingo’s an assassin-turned-vigilante with no memories and emmet’s smiling in the lord regent’s face while turning the palace against him behind his back.

#pla rf4: rune factory 4 au. the wardens etherlink with their nobles to sustain both adaman and irida. if you know what that means congrats and also come yell with me about it

#poke slayer: demon slayer au that is, i will be honest, mostly about torturing former darkness hashira ingo

#the legends zone: taz balance au. an ipre consisting of ingo, emmet, elesa, prof. rowan, laventon, cyllene and one stowaway. emmet and elesa are liches, emmet gets stuck in a whistle, rowan voidfishes everyone and becomes kamado and founds the galaxy team to fix their mistake with the light of creation (arceus) and the nobles.

i don’t post much msa anymore and most of this is not particularly Up To Standard but i GUESS i’ll compile those tags too

#msa analysis: for meta

#fic pitch: approximately 2 billion msa au concepts that never went anywhere bc my brain is a pinball machine

#msa mermay: i did two of these! it’s mermaids! more or less 100% art!

#mystery hate blog: aka kitsune (derogatory). i DON’T hate him as a character but i DO bitch a lot about how Everyone Except Me Is Wrong About HIm

#ot3 fake dating: no cave no mystery skulls au where, for Reasons, lewis has to pretend date both arthur and vivi at the same time. not as a throuple just. two legally distinct fake couples he's gotten accidentally involved in. at once.

#spooky kids with magic powers: au based on the idea that lewis was a station experiment where they (lewis, vivi, arthur, reverb's also there i guess) are All science experiments

#vampires au: everyone in the gang is a "vampire” but they’re all following different cherrypicked rules about it

#shards of winter: a sort of ambiguously period au? lewis is a... something, vivi and arthur are... something else. this one is a fic! it's more interesting and coherent than it sounds here

#noir au: fantasy noir, vivi’s a detective and arthur enlists her to find lewis

#western au: fantasy western, specifically. arthur made a deal with the devil. lewis is a ghost.

#msa celeste: lewis, vivi, and arthur are all mountain climbers with their own issues to work through

#msa hk: vivi is hornet but also the protagonist? arthur is the vessel. it’s convoluted

I have a tag for liveblogging the new volume if you are interested in checking it out. Here is a link to the chronological order of my Seraphina Watches V9 Tag and uses too many third-person tags for ease of blocking and reference, and the chronological order of my Volume 9 ruminations.

Yes, if you're using the custom desktop theme, you can add /chrono to the end of a tag and it will now show you posts in order. One of the benefits of using a custom desktop theme in addition to the basic dashboard view. Tumblr Staff DON'T want you to know this lifechanging hack.

That being said, I mean in terms of personal feelings? I think the past episode was the one I had the most issue with all volume. My immediate inclination is to suspect that this is because all the effort's been funnelled into the finale (and previous episodes) because I think penultimate episodes don't necessarily have as higher viewership. My other hunch is that probably more than half the episode was set-up for something to be rejected, which as I was watching the episode felt like they had been walking back the development of Episode 8, and you have to understand that my expectations are in the floor because I enjoy RWBY so much. If I enjoy something, it makes me more trepidatious, and I just expect my investment to have been for nothing. It doesn't make me a trustful viewer.

It doesn't help that I think RWBY is smart in ways a lot of stories avoid now (actual commitment, fundamental storytelling tools used in exciting ways, fucking necessary and purposeful dialogue) and if I've been trained to expect worse because there is so much shit around, I'm going to expect shit.

Anyway, I think what's really funny is that people take such issue with Miles and Kerry, and like I'm not trying to deliberately step on a landmine or anything but I think it's interesting neither of them wrote this episode (it was Eddy Rivas and someone else) and as it's possibly the worst written episode of the volume - handholding dialogue, expository best frend speeches (puke), characters saying REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS AT YOU, Curious Cat's characterisation clumsily handled - and the writing is the most important part to me - I guess I have to fucking wonder? I'm not trying to start shit, truly, but I also think the RWBY fandom might have issues. On the other hand I have to wonder if this episode was similarly passed off just because it's the set-and-scene for the finale.

I didn't learn anything new or interesting about Ruby either, so none of her development in this episode was that interesting to me, which is a real shame because I think a character walking through a metaphysical otherplace of rebirth should probably have more to do and say, but that's just me.

As I said in my liveblog, I have this issue where RWBY is really really really really great and actually smart and clever (this fandom is fucking dumb), and then there's the odd occasion of breathtakingly bad handholding dialogue or the fucking friendship is magic bullshit, and then I'm asking where the interesting characters have gone. I know that Volume 9's focus on a smaller cast a) gave them an ostensibly easier time and b) gave the fanbase who wanted team RWBY hijinks some fun, but given that the only two interesting characters this volume are Jaune and Ruby, and now Jaune and Ruby were split up this episode, it is naturally a harder time for me. Their development is clearly the most important, the stagnation of the other three (and growth/happiness) is clearly meant to contrast with the suffering characters, but also Weiss' characterisation this volume has so far been insufferable (the not-a-princess who invents problems is not one I really like anymore - and I used to be a Weiss fan for most of the show) and Blake/Yang are interesting insofar as they've failed Ruby and that is fun.

So I can write up some of my unhappiness with this episode to just like, bad writing, bad writing for a reason, motivated set-up, and then also catering to idiots who don't even a basic storytelling knowledge who need the mythic concept of rebirth explained to them. NEWSFLASH: that part of the fandom doesn't care, will never care, and will never be happy, because their job is to be upset online and they like it, and they will never ever ever ever pay attention to dialogue because dialogue, foreshadowing, and basic character interaction and development DON'TTTT MEAN ANYTHING TO THEM. The only thing shit like pandering to non-fans does is alienate actual people who are not fucking stupid. It's embarrassing and weak and noncommital and it is probably my most major problem with RWBY.

RWBY is best when it's doubling down on its unique ideas and unique commitments and unique character and its actual special sense of magic and fun. Eschew the lampshading, fuck da haterz, fuck the people who have no sense of spectacle and substance.

Also I'm really hoping that 'acceptance' stuff was bullshit considering Jaune got thrown in Ben Solo's deathpit. That's about the only way I can read that nonsensical dialogue because there is no way in Hell that the solution to Salem's scenario is just ~acceptance~. The gods are unkind and unsympathetic, and Salem and Ozma will see each other again. Love endures. So if they walk back that set-up I'll be bigmad. I don't know how you get the restoration of tragedy to comedy without some big epic answer that is greater than 'hmmm you shoulda got over it'. That's not how storytelling works and not storytelling of grand, epic, powerful, magic, fairytale proportions.

Don't give me charcters from broken fairytales with broken idealism and tell them to give that idealism up. Sorry. Go big or go home. When I think about how this episode contrasts to the rest of the show, and indeed the previous episode with Ruby's little speech (you go girl, that was one of my favourite moments in the whole volume, you're so FUCKING right, this is BULLSHIT), then I want to assume it's being smart. I want to.

So I'm just hoping that, say, Jaune's annoying dialogue this episode led to his fall by necessity. I am also hoping that the writers stop pandering to idiots and just fucking write the story they want to write.

It remains to be seen regarding the finale. It's hard to judge a work-in-progress without the synthesis of its ideas. It's the inherent risk of speculation (especially for a blog like mine), because I'm riding big money on theoretical suppositions about how the resolution is supposed to work based on the given thesis and antithesis of the show.

I say this loving RWBY. I say this as a fan of RWBY. I say this as someone who saw Penny's death coming and Ironwood's fall and who has loved almost every other polarising narrative decision. So this isn't a hatepost for the show, not at all, and I'm not tagging it that way. But to my detractors, neither am I 'toxically positive' and neither - neither! - is liking a story something I have to qualify to make myself sound fucking smart. Liking things purely and being able to identify what makes them tick is actually the starting foundation of coherent criticism - which is a common issue online. A lot of criticism postures as 'my personal feelings, mostly to the effect of that this sucks' without being able to identify the identity of a work.

So the reason I really didn't enjoy watching Episode 9 is because it didn't lean into RWBY's strengths.

Omg, thank you!! Good luck with your own game! There’s a few ways to go, based on how much you want to R E A D E V E R Y T H I N G versus just get the story.

The Masterpost is the main Collection Of Major Posts In Order! Each season has a list of every episode/session, with links to a summary of the session and any artwork or thoughts or writing or funny moments related to that session.

Alternately, every post on the blog is tagged with “call of cthulhu: haunted hijinx” and every story-related post is tagged with “story updates”, so if you’re on desktop, you can view one of those tags in chronological order by adding "/chrono" to the URL, and just BINGE THE WHOLE DANG THING.

Hey guys! The 17 yo cat with kidney disease I was out of town watching lived to see another week (she was a very good girl). Which means now I can get back to the good stuff. Anyways, they first have to do this familiar ledge fall, because, it’s Yugioh, and if there’s a bunch of lava, Tristan wants

that.

And then Joey decides...hey you know what? I’m gonna jet. And...it’s not the first time he’s pulled a wild card and been unpredictable, I mean none of us can really forget that time he decided to get murdered by Mai instead of going in a straight line towards the end boss last season, but this time it was kind of funny how it was hastily composed.

And off he goes, folks.

As he left, Tristan was like “Ya dummy!” and Tea was like “nono, we gotta encourage him--run Joey! You can do it! See? Now he’s gone.” and it’s like...Tea is either trying to kill Joey with her support or honestly thinks that’s good support and I can’t fully tell which she is.

It’s at this point that Grandpa has the gall to say “Did any of you happen to catch the lore? I fell asleep during that part.” Just like my Dad when we watch any movie as a family.

Meanwhile, maybe 100 ft away from them, Joey is in mortal peril but it’s Joey, so he’ll be fine. Don’t worry about it.

In fact, this episode seems like it would have been a better arc if it stretched out more episodes because the Joey neglect happens so quickly and out of nowhere that it’s...less organic than your average children’s show. Honestly it’s kind of funny how fast the fall of Joey Wheeler happens this episode. And I think it could have been a fun interesting time if it was handled better but youknow...it’s crammed into one single episode and you’ll se what happens.

As Yugi ruminates a cool thing that would have been really interesting this season--like running into more rando’s from other periods of time than just Alexander--Tea looks across the lava highway and was like “found it.”

Back at the dragon situation, Joey starts opening his heart to this dragon and it’s like...did they originally intend for Seto Kaiba to be here? Because I guess Joey uses Red Eyes a lot, but I also skip a lot of the card games, so when I think “who likes the dragon card?” Joey is not the first one I think of.

That and like he got over his Atlantis dragon card like hella fast, right? Like totally already over that?

And also if you thought Joey would pull out his other dragon to try and communicate or get a hold of this dragon like...nah.

Back at the fort, these guys decided to ditch Joey to get to this sword at the top of a volcano to solve the riddle, and what follows is some weird ass canon.

As I’m pulling up my Google Doc with my deathcount on it, Tristan decides this is the time he won’t freakin die and turn into a robot monkey for 15 episodes.

And he makes a huge ass green dragon. You’d think this MASSIVE dragon would do more in this episode, but nah. Although he pulls out Massive Dragon, it’s like kind of worthless, so he mostly puts it back in his pocket.

And then Tea pulls this elf chick out and it’s freakin hilarious because look at her giant elf.

Like Tea is not a small person! Are Yugioh monsters all 12 ft tall???

Yugi is also all ham about fusing with his dude now. It knocked him out a couple episodes ago, but Yugi is so keen on destroying his body that he’s back in clown town. And like...took his Grandpa for a ride, I guess, although I’m pretty sure Summoned Skull has wings.

Course, Summoned Skulls insides are his outsides...and I dunno if you’d want Summoned Skull to give you a big hug and carry you around. Summoned Skull just seems like he’s sticky.

And, once they make it to the top of the volcano where the plot sword lives, we first have to visit this plot twist of the century.

YEAH.

OUT OF NOWHERE.

THIS EPISODE IS NOT LONG.

Aaaaaaand now Joey is going to try and kill everyone here. I did not skip anything, PS, Joey dipped off-screen.

PS, everyone’s reaction to “I will kill you!” was a whole lot of rolling their eyes at first being like “Joey, stawp.”

So, now that Joey’s randomly possessed by this dragon, we get a peek into what Joey’s brain zone looks like. It’s a whole lot of nothing in between his ears.

Consistent to S1 actually, when we had a bit of a Joey Brain Zone moment. It was a blank void there, too.

So apparently Joey decided, back when he was confessing his love to Red Eyes Black Dragon, that he would jump on it’s back to calm it down--and it just...fused with him. So...now he’s a dragon.

Sure, I guess. I mean...there’s really no limit on what a Duel monster can’t do, so I’ll allow it.

The team tries to just say “ah screw it” and pull up this sword themselves (you can kind of see it in this shot) and the sword just slurps into the dirt even more out of spite. Seeing that there’s a bit of a time limit, Grandpa pulls this one out of his back pocket.

Yo, Grandpa’s not even possessed. Hey, remember that time that Grandpa nearly died giving Arthur Hawkins the last of his water back in Egypt? Remember that?

Like uh, you can definitely tell this was made by a different team that may not have gotten that cue card. It may have been lost in the mail. Either way, kind of a hilarious heel turn on Grandpa’s personality here, although it does make logical sense to save most of the kids from sacrificing one kid. It’s just...that kid is Joey...so...that’s like his adopted Grandson, right?

So Yugi does something very on brand for Yugi and invades a brain.

And like...obviously Yami and Yugi would say no to this. They would never do this. Not after all the dozens and dozens of times they have sacrificed the world and everything for their best friends.

But...maybe just this one time we can kill Joey? As a treat?

So uh...Yami hella vaporizes Joey with his new powers. Luckily, Joey Wheeler has Shaggy Doo energy and just...he survives it for some reason. I don’t know why he isn’t dead, maybe because the dragon made him stronger? Eh, don’t do the math (on any part of this episode).

So Joey gets up and is like “I know the answer to the riddle!” As the sword kinda melts into the volcano and Gramps is like “Well we’re dead, actually, so no one cares!”

And Joey’s like “Look!” and he hops onto the back of the Red Eyes Black dragon and reveals this random thing:

Because it turns out, that the dragon was the real problem and not this volcano with a sword in it.

Which youknow...could have been cool if this episode wasn’t so many insane plot points so quickly. Kind of a lot of episode here. This episode could have been a whole season of a show.

Like how long was Joey Possessed by Marik in S2? Like 5 or 6 episodes? And you can see how much more successful it was at selling the story although it was a lot of the same themes and ideas. Pacing is important.

And then Joey passes out from the suit juice.

Which is when we get one more Alexander cameo, just kinda watching them leave and onto the next arc of their little journey.

They sure did put a lot of eyeliner on Alexander the great, and, being real...he may have actually been wearing a hell ton of dope eyeliner when he was alive, so this could be historically accurate, for all we know. Those old marble statues used to be painted, after all. Maybe they had dope Yugioh eyeliner down to his cheekbones? One can wish.

And like if you ever get the time--seeing what those marble statues looked like with paint on it is so freakin goofy and fun, I love it. I love that for 600 years we thought those marble statues were supposed to be naked and white but it’s like, nah man--this guy’s just wearing a skin tight breast plate and when you paint it, it’s so garish it’s like a freakin clown outfit.

Little late getting to these -- that's fully the fault of a class project I spent all of Monday/Tuesday and most of Wednesday working on -- but I finished my project and wrote up some long replies to these!

(Apologies for any funny formatting -- I'm trying out the beta for the new post editor!)

Absolutely not.

Nope! There are a few people who do know (other guides Andrew's met before, the Dryad, and I'd imagine the Witch Doctor knows something's up even if he doesn't know why), but none of them live in Purity Town proper, and the Dryad and Witch Doctor aren't the kind to participate in rumors or spread what isn't theirs to share. The old man is also aware just because he and Andrew have talked about their curses, but he's 1) not currently in town and 2) not going to share even if he were.

Most folks don't know much about Andrew in general; Becca probably knows the most out of the townsfolk, knowing a little bit about his family and where he's from (he has some pretty specific skills as a hunter that betray this, but he doesn't talk about his exact town of birth), but no specifics and certainly not time periods.

Andrew is good at keeping things quiet; he has to be.

I would actually appreciate if you didn't post to Pinterest -- usually I'm fine with people reposting with credit (several of the things I've posted to my DeviantArt have found their way to Instagram, for example) but Pinterest has something of a reputation for stolen art (things being reposted from another Pinterest post without credit this time, or credit being hard to view for users not logged in or just viewing through Google). So reposting elsewhere is fine (though if you repost to Reddit or Instagram, tag me at u/Ariibees or @Ariibees)! I'd just prefer my works stay off of Pinterest.

The terminology related to The Guide/Andrew/The Guardian/The World’s Core/The WoF is all confusing because on some level, they’re all the same being. Kind of like trying to talk about Jekyll and Hyde -- same guy, different looks/actions, haha.

For all intents and purposes, references to the WoF being the barrier/core/whatever behind or within which the spirits of light and dark are contained is equivalent to saying “these spirits are held trapped by the magic of the Guardian, who when summoned appears as the WoF.” I do break slightly from the official lore in how the WoF/Guardian/thing holding back these spirits works (mostly because I don’t really like the idea that the Hallow is a “temporary guardian” or whatever), but the basic concept of “these are trapped by [thing that makes up the WoF]” remains unchanged.

If “loony cultist” is a reference to something, I’m so sorry, but I’m lost on it. If you’re just talking about the lunatic cultist in a funny way, then yes, they’re in here as a very plot-significant character!

I had to google what meme you were talking about, but it did make me laugh.

Andrew’s most annoyed by the nickname because people do like to call him Guide, and for someone who’s dedicated his whole life to his role, it can get tiring. He doesn’t really *mind* being called Guide -- it’s fine, that’s what he is and as long as people are respectful of his job he’ll take what he can get -- but at the same time, he’d like for people to stop thinking “Aah! Monster!” or “Weird academic know-it-all” and just...treat him like a normal person sometimes. So he fights to be called Andrew. And...Malik comes along and gives him a nickname that he doesn’t like and doesn’t allow others to use, save for maybe a small group of people of which Malik is not a part. So, not cool, man!

People love to overcomplicate explaining shading/lighting, and if you wanted to you could certainly go on and on about reflections of light off the ground and shading colors and all sorts of things, but as I’m writing this at 1 AM I don’t really care to.

If you really want to get into shading, I see nice ones on DeviantArt or Tumblr from time to time, or you can always watch a YouTube video on it. Really, though, just keep at it, think about how the shadows should look and work, and you'll get better at it eventually and pick up new ideas on how it all works. (And this is coming from someone who is new to making comics and actually started as a painter.)

Purity Town’s shading comes down to this: simplicity. As much as I’d love to spend hours and hours redrawing the panels I don’t like and carefully shading every fold of fabric and painting detailed backgrounds, I’m a full-time college student and will be working full-time over the summer -- I don’t have the time. So, I cut corners: I reuse backgrounds or use brushes (see: bricks, trees, clouds) that make certain details easier, and I try not to obsess too much over panels I’m not fully happy with. Shadows go where they feel right, and light on the opposite side.

For shading, this comes down to making things quick and easy. For these last few pages, character shading/lighting has only been five layers. One hard light layer for the bluer soft shadows, one overlay layer for darker soft shadows, one linear burn layer for hard shadows, one soft light layer for soft lighting, and one overlay layer for hard lighting. I’ll often also make use of glow dodge layers for lighting, or change the color balance or add more hard/soft light layers if there’s a very heavy color filter on the scene (such as a celestial event, blood moon, or outdoors at night).

Using all the different layer types is essentially a cheat code to fancier lighting -- don’t want to use flat black? Boom, hard light or overlay or burn will give you colored shadows. Want to make your light brighter? Glow dodge will make it burn your retinas.

Sorry that this isn’t a very comprehensive guide, but in my mind, shading and lighting is really something that you pick up over time and it’s hard to sit down and write a guide for it without making it into a massive essay on art theory that I don't even know proper terminology for because I'm not an art student. Of course with some googling you’ll find *proper* guides for this sort of thing from art majors and the likes, and those can be super helpful and technical! But for Purity Town, I just sort of go with what feels right and what's easy to replicate.

Firstly, I’m happy to hear you’re liking the comic!

Secondly, those buttons are actually there due to the theme! (For those on mobile who can’t see it, I have the theme set to only display on desktop as I prefer the current mobile layout on phone.) I’m using the simple webcomic theme (a quick Google should tell you how to install it for yourself) -- except I’m not actually using it for the webcomic features; rather, it’s a case of “this is the most simple, nice-looking non-default theme I could find.”

The previous/next buttons are added by the theme with the intent that the blog is being used as a typical webcomic website, with nothing but comic pages being posted. However, I post asks and other art here too, and I do so with the intent that people looking at #Terraria or their dashboards in general will see it. So...I use html formatting to make the first/previous/next/last links, along with an index and chapter-by-chapter viewing (using /tagged/chapter##/chrono) so that no matter where you’re coming from, you can still navigate just the pages!

If you want to add just the previous/next buttons, I can’t really help you -- web development is not my area of study in the slightest. But you can check out the theme that they come from and if you want to install only them, you can surely find a tutorial on it somewhere!

(As a side note, the comments section is not from the theme, it’s from a site called Disqus. I don’t expect many people, if anyone, to leave comments, but since I link back to this site a lot and many folks don’t have Tumblr accounts, it’s an option I like to make available.)

Hiya! My hike was pretty nice; it was a short and easy one, but that was quite appreciated as the trail is unmaintained from November to April, and the trail was covered in fallen trees and quite rocky. Still had fun, though!

And for backgrounds, it depends! For indoors scenes (or outdoors scenes with buildings) I don’t tend to use references, outside of looking up things like “which side of a door is the handle on.” I will, however, integrate real-life textures (see: the quilt and rug in Guide’s house, the wood walls on the building in the background of this week’s page), and paint over paintings from the Terraria wiki.

For outdoors scenes, for simple backgrounds (such as foliage-heavy) ones, I typically don’t need references. I like the difference between detailed, lined indoor/man-made object scenes vs. painted, messy outdoor scenes. But for things like mountains, I do sometimes look up references to help with color choices and the likes.

The town’s layout is a bit strange in that depending on the scene, the background could be drastically different. One side of town faces more mountainside, one side faces the orchards/open hillside, and the other two sides face various degrees of open space and more mountainside/forest. References taken on top of mountains are helpful to get an idea of what degree of foliage I should include between the characters and the sky.

Though this is very specific to the town of Purity -- other towns/villages will have significantly different-looking backgrounds, even the foliage-heavy ones.

That said, what's even more helpful than looking at photos is looking at paintings. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is really good for getting an idea of how to draw grasslands and distant mountains, plus Studio Ghibli movies in general!

Hey there! I've played a good deal of fighting games before and used to love Xrd. I only ever played Faust seriously because I thought he was cool and funny. Strive came along and I'm absolutely addicted and started uploading combo videos for him to the dustloop wiki. I've always loved combos and remember getting frustrated as hell with trying to learn them with no videos or specific advice. I want to provide people with something to alleviate this. Do you have any advice on the best ways to build and preserve this type of knowledge? I also started getting very interested in the lore, especially with Faust since he seems so different in Strive. I've heard so many hear-say theories as to why, but no real solid information. I feel like the personality of his character helped me through one of my greatest hardships in life recently, and I want to know more about him and the world around him to truly understand. Thank you very much in advance, and I wish you well! :)

While I'm no expert at maintaining Wikis, I do know that Dustloop Wiki itself has been a rather major authority on Guilty Gear combos.

But above all else they have listed what is known as "combo theory".

Usually it's a footnote that describes how each individual character's combos work, usually listing every single normal you could start a combo with, the practicality of such, the situations you can get with counter-hits and regular confirms, guard-string theory, and overall methods of how to build your own combos and offense.

In fact I'll give Sol's Combo Theory page here, as an example.

BUT... that's just ONE WAY of sharing and preserving the information.

As it just so happens ARC System Works has been planning a "Combo Sharing" mechanic in Training Mode that lets players share and upload their unique combo recipes to Guilty Gear Strive's Servers for people to Download and practice with!

Combo Recipes in GGStrive have gotten especially technical since they even list commands that act as "negative edge" (buttons that activate on release, not press, but also moves that don't make contact during a combo).

Compare that with more modern GGStrive Combos (Jack-O' as an example!)

Suffice to say that eventually GGStrive itself will one day support a wide variety of services: combo recipes to share online, replays with input history, and even a "take control" feature for Replay Theater (it basically lets you pause a replay and take control of a situation to see if you can overcome the situation or make a better decision for future). It really is like Axl Low's Time Travelling ability!

The PC version of Guilty Gear XX Accent Core already has the "Take Control" function implemented in its Replay system, so later games (and updates) are expected to follow suit!

As for Faust's story itself... I've had character tags for him for a while now, but you can always use the Tumblr search function and chrono function for all the other times I've mentioned him as well!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

At 7 PM, all guests are waiting anxiously. Some are excited, others are nervous, but everyone wonders what will happen now. It's only been a few minutes since the lights went off, but it feels like an eternity.

And then... Golden butterflies, just like those idly flying around, begin to amass at the top of the staircase leading to the second floor. They form a true cloud, which dissolves to reveal none other than the silhouettes of tonight's noble hosts. They wear costumes inspired by 1980's fashion, just fitting for their own temporal origin. And as expected, they start the festivities with the most iconic sentence:

<"HAAAAAPPYYYYYY HALLOWEEEEEEN!!!! AAAAAAAND TRIIIIICK OOOOR TREEEEEEEEAT!!!!">

The lights turn on once again in a burst, as several magical figures, servants of the Ushiromiya family, pop into existence either on the staircase or floating above it, as they bright forth a wave of applause. The spotlights highlight the Golden Witch and the Endless Sorcerer the most, as the latter grabs a microphone to start their presentation.

"Good evening, Spirale City! I hope you folks are ready for a truly spooooky night, where the world of humans and the world of witches comes into contact with each other!"

Then, Beato took the microphone. "There is no need to be afraid, however. This is an once-a-year moment, where the grotesque, the weird, the supernatural, can exist freely, without being afraid of the limitations humans bring to them. This is a night of joy, after all."

"And speaking of limitations, that includes the temporal restrictions fashion imposes to us on a daily basis. This year's theme for our guests' costumes is a Chrono Celebration! No matter whether you came from ancient times or the most distant future, show off your time period's culture and style with pride! I hope to see many people joining this fun. Ihihi!"

"Of course, we wouldn't be so cruel to expel you if you choose to go for another path in your fun. But if you have even the tiiiiniest change of heart about it, check the rooms to the hall's right, where a costume room can be found. Alternatively, you could ask the makeup crew's assistance to make you look like a monstrous being straight from Hell! *Cackle**cackle**cackle*!!"

“Beato, please, we have children here.” He whispers to her ear, before coughing and returning his attention to the audience. “A-Anyway, that is not our only attraction! To your left, you’ll find the parlor, where a karaoke system is set up on the TV. Just ask Hieda no Akyuu (@ninthmiare), who is overseeing it, to help set you up and go have fun singing your lungs out with friends!”

A spotlight shone upon Akyuu over this mention of her, as it would do for any other person mentioned during their speech. “Of course, if you feel like that is too cheerful for a Halloween Party, you can just wait a bit later. Once we hit 11 PM, Akyuu will move to the dinner room, where a ghost story sharing session will start! Bring on your scariest tales, or read some of the material provided to us by a partner of ours-” Beatrice summons business cards for Owl’s Books to everyone’s hands, much like the cards present at the gift baskets, with info about all the partner businesses that collaborated with the party. “-for maximum fright!”

“Those who’d rather partake in a more physical activity can go up the second floor, where Emma (@gracefieldorphan) and Jon K. are responsible for carrying out a hide-and-seek game! It’s open for all ages, so don’t be afraid to join!”

“And for people who’d rather enjoy tonight in a more intellectual manner, we’ll ask you to go all the way up to the third floor. A escape room game shall await those who dare take the challenge. I hope none of you will bore our dear Piper Elenmin (@shadowedstep) with boring reasonings!”

“Lastly, we shall have an ample selection of musical attractions throughout the whole party! Starting at 19:20, we have Ultimate Pianist Kaede Akamatsu (@pureryudo) and famous idol Rise Kujiwawa (@wavesang)! Next, at 20:10, we have the idol duo of Sayo Hikawa (@heroicadvents) and Aya Maruyama (@ayasashi)!!”

“Check in at 21:00 for the spetacular presentation of fellow cute blondes, Rin Kagamine (@rightreflection) and Klavier Gavin (@rockstarprosecutor)! By 21:50, it’ll be time for yet another idol to join us, the versatile GUMI (@mozeik)!!”

“If you’d rather listen to other sorts of music besides singing, just wait until 22:40. First, we’ll have Ecaterina Ciobanu (@unulales) bringing some creepy tunes with her violin! Next, it’ll be the time for Midvalley (@midvalley-the-hornfreak) to captivate us with a saxophone show at 23:30!”

“Music shall accompany us until the end of this magical night. After the stroke of midnight, Dorothea Arnault (@chanteuser) will bring us to a night in the opera, exactly at 00:20! And to end the service, we shall have I-no (@sinfoniette) going feral with her guitar! Huh huh, I can’t wait to have all of you relieving my boredom with your sweet tunes!!”

“Ihihihihi! I think we all will, dear!” Battler says amused, before pulling a more serious face. “....Before we end it for tonight, though, I need to give you folks a general warning. This is meant to be a funny evening, with nothing but positive vibes here. Light hearted pranks are fine, but violence of any sort will not be tolerated. See these?” He points to a golden butterfly flying around. “They’re directly linked to Beato and I’s minds. If any of you try pulling anything ‘funny’ that would disrupt the party, we will know.”

“And the consequences for such violations of our hospitality will be dire.” Beato adds. “We have a strong security team. We trust them to be able of handling most rumbuctious folks. If you insist on offering resistance, however, goat butlers will appear around you and immobilize you. If that doesn’t suffice, we have our higher ranked furniture, such as the Seven Stakes of Purgatory or the Chiester Sisters, to deal with such elements.”

“And if even after all that, you insist on spoiling people’s fun...” Battler raises his hand, where a small glass-like Fragment appears. “You will be sent to this Time-Out Fragment until the end of the party. It’s pretty much a pocket dimension, so don’t think you can escape if it gets to this.”

As soon as he finished that, Battler broke into a happy smile and clapped his hands. “So, I hope everyone enjoys the party! Thank you to everyone who came, and to everyone that helped and is helping us right now! Oh, and a last thing. If any of you gets hurt or feels ill, check the medical room, where you’ll receive due treatment. That is it for now!”

With that, Battler and Beatrice teleported away from the staircase, freeing the way up. They must be somewhere in the crowd now, as they wish to enjoy the party as everyone else...

FINAL REPLIES TO THE GRIND... and a bit of blather.

Thank you everyone for your patience while this story arc was completed… I know topics such as drugs and clubbing aren’t to everyone’s taste. The nightclub posts are now finished, although the repercussions of the night are just beginning! But before Anita and Jojo and Roy and Co try to deal with the fallout there will be a foray to Starlight Shores’ dark underbelly to track down Noah’s assassins. There will be some more Raj and Mia, and I’m also working on my #Where Are They Now project and @braxensims’ airport pic ;=) Next weekend in my story is also when Saoirse arrives from Sunset Valley to take up residence with Roy in his Bridgeport apartment! (although a week in my story has been known to last up to six months in real time so I wouldn’t be holding my breath for that particular event lolololol!) I also have a lot of ideas for a storyline involving Sonia and Violet and Sonia’s parents….and the climax of the Naomi/Alex subplot continues to boil and bubble away in the darkest corners of my mind, heheheheh!! Thank you for the great question! And the answer is not particularly…he doesn’t often indulge in drugs himself, because of the reasons outlined here and more recently here. But there’s recreational drug use and then there’s addiction…Jojo would say Megan definitely fell into the latter category. (He’s worked at The Grind long enough and been around enough party animals to know the difference by now). I think tonight he is more shocked that Anita popped a pill than anything else because of her profession, and because she has always been so anti-drugs.

Yeah, he went to Hell and back with Megan. I can imagine them having had a few incidents at The Grind as well with people having bad trips etc…but on the whole the community is pretty well-educated when it comes to drugs and the risks involved.

It’s been a long time this cover page was ready(so it’s like my old style?), I’ve just been waiting, gathering courage to show it. I believe if you give it a chance you will find it, very very interesting.

Would like to thank everyone that is reading my comics, it really means a lot to me and makes the effort all worth it!

We hit a funny milestone and that’s what motivated me to show this work and it links to the main protagonist of this comic!

I watched some videos of BM before coming [PBR, Slutgarden, not actually a video]. And I was sort of worried that BM was a meat market full of gorgeous pepole and I'd be the ugliest guy here. Not the case thankfully. Average attractiveness is definitely higher, people come here to do physical stuff and are therefore more likely to be fit. But there are fat people, old people, saggy boobed people.

There are naked women [I had planned to link a clip of the Malcolm in the Middle episode where they go to BM here, but it's not on YouTube. Reese is pitching his brother on going and uses the phrase "naked women" like five separate times. Trust me, this joke would've been at least mildly funny if I could actually link the video. I didn't go to ogle women, this is supposed to come off as ironic.] and women walking around in their underwear. And they are selected for being hot. [Yes, I know people wear less clothing for the simple reason that it's socially acceptable there, and it's hot outside, etc. But I still think the selection effect is real and large. People who get praised for showing off their bodies are more likely to do so, even if that's not the universal or only reason.] I have endeavored to look at them the correct amount. The chadly ["chadly" is sort of an in-joke. Think high status or attractive] thing is to act totally nonplussed. Yeah, you're hot and half naked but it's not anything I haven't seen before, so it's not too exciting. I can affect this after a couple days.

Some of them are really smart and interesting [not meant to imply the rest of them aren't, but base rates]. Makes me sound like a sexist douche to be surprised. Really I think the two things are at most mildly anticorrelated. It's just not a salient possibility when I see them or meet them in a shallow way.

[Here's the model for anticorrelation. Epistemic status: armchair speculation, weakly held.

People will do what gets them praise, rewards, etc. If you get that from showing off your body you'll do that, if you get that from signalling intelligence you'll do that. The two will never be exactly as effective as each other, so people will tend to favor whichever works better for them. So very smart people are less likely to show off their bodies. This is not meant to imply that people can't simultaneously be smart and attractive, just that they will focus more on exploiting one than the other. IIRC basically everything good is positively correlated, so actually smart people should be more likely to be hot and vice versa.

This theory is hurt by the fact that signalling physical health and signalling intellect get you different kinds of rewards. Being hot might get you a job that lots of people could do, one where interacting with people is important, partners, help from people who think you might sleep with them, etc, but will help much less (and might actually hurt?) if you are trying to get a job that is very intellectually difficult and only a small number of people can do, or have your ideas taken seriously. So it may well be best to do both, in different contexts.]

S5 Ep8: The Saga of Grandpa Muto’s Mysterious Broken Ass

Getting ready to eat some Devlin eggs this Easter Sunday, feeling festive, and I figured it’s time to post this one a little earlier. Also, because it’s done, which I wasn’t expecting. It’s a slightly longer episode this time, but still, eh, pretty short.

We’ve come off of the very predictable, but still kind of disappointing downfall of Joey Wheeler, and onto a Rebecca arc. Which I’m sure won’t be annoying at all.

The lesser Roland--who’s name I do not know, but the one that wears the weirder sunglasses and seems way smarter than Roland, but clearly isn’t the favorite--lets us know that Zigfried has been going by an alternate identity for years and years. Which like...who cares? It’s not like the Kaibas have always been Kaibas. This is old hat to them.

So Seto sets him off on a quick bribe run, opening a list of different politicians and saying “Oh, this one’s super easy, go for it--he’s in my ass pocket, this guy. Hate this guy.” and it was...that easy for Seto to glide right into that Gozaburo lifestyle that he insists he totally doesn't do anymore. But youknow, with Seto Kaiba there really isn’t any good or bad just win or lose.

On the other end of the park, the choo-choo blue eyes white dragon train pulls in from death mountain, and once again the seating arrangement was really mystifying. Yugi in the very front, all alone. Tea sitting next to Tristan for some reason. Duke sitting next to Joey Wheeler, when I’m pretty sure Duke is probably the least comforting person in this entire group.

In fact all Duke had to say to comfort Joey was “you lost because you went up against a professional duelist!” and it’s like...at what point do you become a “professional duelist?” The game is fake. How many times do you have to save the world before you’re a “professional duelist,” Duke?

Course...maybe he has to get a high school diploma first...

Anyway, Joey spent the last part of this ride sobbing into the seats next to Duke Devlin while everyone else went “weee!” around the...molten pools of lava in this literal volcano that the Kaibas are pretty sure are a really good idea.

Speaking of loss.

Grandpa Hawkins runs over to inform us that not only is no one watching his Grandaughter, but also, he lost a grown ass man because he decided to look for a doctor, couldn’t find a doctor, did watch Rebeccas match for a little while, listened to the part where she was like “I dedicate this match to my true love and boyfriend Yugi Muto with this sonnet I just wrote” and was like “normal thing to say!” and then finally found a doctor, who was like “well he’s not here so clearly he’s cured!” and charged Hawkins a bill despite Grandpa being no where to be found.

I can’t imagine the review that Hawkins is going to leave on Yelp.

Stepping away from thinking that Grandpa ditched his date with Hawkins to go on another date with some random theme park hussie, Yugi decides to ditch Rebecca, because he has way too many fake relationship plotlines in this group to juggle in his already double-stuffed brain.

And Rebecca takes it as if she kind of assumed this would happen.

Also in the actual canon of the show, Hawkins did not tell her that Grandpa was missing, or that Yugi would probably not be coming. Man these people love lying out their ass.

Speaking of being just completely flat on your ass, which happens so much this episode, they stumble upon Leon, who once again kind of comes out of the last place you expect and goes “Hello guys, I regret to inform you I still exist and I really need you to start noticing me already. I swear I will become plot relevant any day now. Please don’t forget I exist.”

...The Kaibas sure did make a tiny town. That sure is the only thing here.

Straight up, the Kaibas don’t know what fun is, and that is canon. And when I look across this landscape, I can only think of that one scene in Arrested Development where they made a very tiny city to convince investors that their housing development was actually legit and very real. And like I feel like the Kaibas would absolutely do that, too.

It’d be good for the gram...but this was before social media was a thing so what is this for?

I mean Leon sure the hell doesn’t know.

Local sad boy genius, Leon, here to get ignored by Rebecca despite being exactly her age, just like other local sad boy genius, Mokuba.

I really called it when I gave him Mai’s font color, huh? Good that even when Mai isn’t here, we can still have a chronically friendless character. But he is like...a lot more adorable than Mai was. Leon is just a lot more likeable. And again--really good hair color. Helps that he doesn’t want to constantly murder Joey Wheeler for no reason.

These kids came out of nowhere and can I just say it’s a really good thing someone woke Leon the hell up before the cameras arrived because that would have been SHOCKING if they all thought he was dead.

I love this boat.

Also Joey makes this observation and it was really funny the way he said it:

The sign that hangs above the park entrance that says “no one kidnapped in 1 days” flips back to 0.

I mean, we all know it’s Vivian, because it’s this global tournament where everyone is defined by stereotypes. But, I want to know how she got the panda stationary. That’s pretty good. There’s a side of me from my 11 yo self that never got over my sanrio phase collecting cute stationary with matching stickers and jelly pens to write 1 (one) letter and stuff it into a friend’s locker (and then have them say they cannot read my handwriting) and that part of me loves panda stationary.

Like if I got matching stationary with like...the matching stickers on it...in my ransom letter...damn that’s like seriously sentimental stuff. I’d feel a little ambiguous about that.

This town is the exact size that California was last season where you could just leap skip from Death Valley to San Fransisco.

And later we are...one step closer to Vivian. And if it’s not, and it’s actually like Bandit Keith on the other side of this door, I will be very happily surprised and this will be my favorite arc.

Also...please note that Joey is still wearing this duel disk after he’s completely done dueling.

Joey, please. It’s over, Joey. You live that Duke Devlin life now, retire the disk.
