dangerous weirdo with questionable motives??? I dig my teeth into that, could you spare me some facts about the kestrel, please?
lol It's so hard to talk about the Kestrel without giving a lot away. I mean, it's not earthshaking spoiler territory but it's sort of something you need to learn with the MC.
So I'll stick to some of the vague, bare minimum stuff. I go a little deeper into motives/what they're doing in the first short I wrote for them on Patreon. It's a really short short, but I actually give quite a bit away about them.
The Kestrel is a servant of a higher power (not a god or anything, just someone very powerful). They've lived for a very long time, so most everything about humans and life in general has started to bore them.
As for their power, I describe them as a dreamwalker on the itchio profile. I'm sure that's at least partially self explanatory, but: the Kestrel can affect and manipulate someone's dreams while they sleep and effectively 'spy' on someone through their dreams. It's on a whole different scale than R, who was sort of doing that but the MC can quickly break R's hold. Breaking Kestrel's control would be very different and way more difficult, as Kestrel is strong enough to hold someone in a dream indefinitely. (R dabbles in it as a branch of their other powers while Kestrel was born to it.)
They are not necessarily 'malevolent', though at the same time typical human morality really doesn't apply to them at all. They just don't see things the way we do (that's a race/culture thing for their people, not just Kestrel).
And they have maybe some stalking vibes with the MC.
And maybe they know about the MC's childhood.

With the roll of the blonde's emeralds and a small sigh that followed, Becky hadn't realised how focused she was on her delivery when her attention had now been fixated with the man standing in front of her - Was he new in town?
Or maybe being the hermit she was, she just never bothered to meet any of her neighbours.
"Oh uh - Don't be sorry. The mail has been shitty these few weeks and so I'm sorry my stuff keeps coming your way " She responded finally, her cheeks turning a slight shade of crimson.
"Don't wanna make ya think that you've got a creepy admirer sending you gifts and all" The sudden low chuckle that slipped her plush lips made her own stomach turn, she wanted to kick herself, but this was probably why she never liked to meet people. ever....
"I'm Becky, by the way"
Tumblr media
Kestrel was still awkwardly holding the box that had her goods in his hands and thus he set it down on the porch. He shouldn't have rung the doorbell, but he felt obligated to do as much and it had seemed she had been hawking the window for her goods anyways. Part of him wondered what she had ordered, but really it was none of his business. It was probably just clothes or make up or whatever ladies were into these days. He couldn't be sure. Though this wasn't the first time the mail for her had ended up on his doorstep. She just hadn't been home or hadn't answered the door quick enough the last few times. Perhaps that's why he felt more comfortable ringing the doorbell, confident enough that she wouldn't answer. He was wrong.
"Well the label says your house number instead of mine, so I was pretty confident that it wasn't for me." Kestrel said, "And I assumed as much since the label also had your name on it. I uh I'm Kestrel." He said with an awkward wave. "Well, hope you have a good day with your goods, ma'am."

I wish Kestrel survived until at least the end of arc 2. I know she was a terrible person who abused the dragonets and kind of deserved it but, I feel like she could have had so many good character interactions and development. Like her learning that she (in her eyes) wasted around 20 years of her life being a babysitter for a prophecy that wasn’t even real. We could have seen her bicker with Scarlet. And above all else, she could have gotten to know Peril more and be the only good parental figure in Peril’s life.
I’m not saying that the DoD have to forgive her for how badly she treated them (they shouldn’t; they have every reason to dislike her. Especially Glory) or that she would be even remotely interested in the jade academy (though I do wonder what she would think about it. Even if it’s just “I don’t care”) but I feel like she could have been so interesting to read if she didn’t die so early.
sorry if this didn’t make any sense or if I was rambling. I just want to get my thoughts out there

Hey Martyn! So, I got into your lore because of Grian's Life Series, and now I'm just trying to find some stuff out. Anyways, I understand most of it, though I do have a couple questions.
What actually are LOOT shards/crystals? I know that they're soke aort of corruption in games of sorta, but how do they get there, how to they affect the game, and also how to disable them. It's just something I'm wondering about since I know you have to find the one piece, of treasure, but how does it actually help?
What are CHEST agents? I know that they're something almost as evil as Cruppy, which is really saying something, but what actually are they?
Are there any extra lore bits in Rats SMP that you can't get anywhere else? I just wanna know if I should grit my teeth and watch it sometime, when I'm done catching up on the VODs of Pirates (can't make it to streams for personal reasons, alas).
If you've come up with it, is there any way that the Watchers lore from the Life Series ties into the datastream hopper lore? Those two just seem a little incompatible to me - hopping the datastream, being captured by mysterious godlike entities... Or are they just two separate universes?
Do you plan on posting the New Life streams on your vods channel?
Who in Pirates is p!Martyn closest to in each faction, overall?
Also, I think you may have mentioned it on stream, but did you take the faction quiz and if so, which faction did you get? I kid you not, when I took it I got Kestrels all three times (with changing the answers to stuff that I would still do, but different than first time, I mean). Had to change it up just to see all the different faction descriptions...
Ok, I think that's it. Sorry if I have bad formatting btw, I'm typing this out on phone. Thank you for taking the time to read my questions! Absolutely love your work and lore, while at the same time having the humour some don't. Keep on doing an amazing job. Hope you find your one piece, of treasure.
Have an ice day!
That's something I want to unveil in the next lore drop, so I'm really sorry to say SoonTM but this lore doesn't have all that many secrets atm
2. C.H.E.S.T agents work are avatars controlled by human operators working for C.H.E.S.T and its evil underbelly. They're a known and trusted public computing corporation but the public doesn't know the full extent of their goals and resources
3. I try to be pretty concise and unavoidable when I do my lore stuff, so you should be able to find the Rats segments in this playlist with ease: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3MFbfp1zo8dooC57HqfbizRoc07PdlFQ
4. Maaaaaaybe, people have noticed some parallels / links and all shall be revealed one day for sure, even if I'm like gonna quit doing videos and streaming, I'd just lore dump whatever isn't revealed so it's out there ha
5. A lot of my New Life streams are me just doing the grindy parts of the SMP and with the server being somewhat inactive I want to save the crossover / collab content for the videos - I'm not sure people would flock to a 3 hour vod of me painfully and slowly building an outpost or hollowing out a mountain to make a factory ya know?
6. Kestrels - probably Sausage, with Oli as a close second. Herons - Owen or Water. Owen has an inquisitive gene like Martyn and Water likes all things musical. Nightingales - Ros is so different to Martyn that it makes for some wholesome and chaotic interations, you never know which you'll get. Kites - Bek is basically the only one he's interacted with, he had a little banter on the seas with Kuervo but it was brief
7. I did! I surprisingly got Kestrel, or I guess, not surprisingly huh?

This is the development blog for the interactive fiction called "The Second Sight", which you can find on itch.io at the link above!
This is my first IF project, although I've been writing original stories and fanfiction for years.
I've included the story description and character profiles from the itch page below the cut.
This blog will be a combination of development info, images and music that I associate with the story, and other musings.
Fair warning, there might be spoilers from the latest chapters here, so I recommend catching up before reading too far.
Asks and submissions are always open.
You’re an urban legend in a county full of them.  When you were thirteen, you were found passed out in the road by one of the local cops. No missing persons report. No fingerprints on file. No memories. Just a name.
Oh, and some bizarre psychic powers.  You're content with simplicity. You like your isolated cabin and helping Carter track down missing persons.  You know that in theory there are more people like you out there, but you've never wanted to look behind the curtain to find out.
However, with the disappearance of a local teen named Casey Powell and a recent attempt on your foster father's life, your serene, isolated life comes abruptly to its end and a new chapter begins.
✤✤✤
The Second Sight is an urban fantasy story, where you step into the role of a psychic whose strange powers have always separated them from others. Those same powers will drag you down the rabbit hole and into a world that is both the familiar and foreign to everything you know. A world filled with magic, witches, fae, demons, and the unknown.
You can immerse yourself in the story by customizing your protagonist's general appearance, choosing how they interact with others, and whether you lean on logic or intuition to problem solve. There are three love interests planned (more may be added depending on player reception and feedback), the genders of which will be selected by the player upon meeting them.
Characters
Jacob Carter
Age: Late forties
Race: Human. Definitely.
Gender: Male
Temperament: Carter radiates grizzled, old bastard energy and despite being the least paternal person in the world, he is your adoptive father. While harsh and aloof on the surface, he is also fiercely protective of you and has bent over backwards to give a decent life to a kid that isn't even his. He doesn't talk about his life before coming to Herman County and you haven't asked him, though that might change soon enough...
✤✤✤
Zander/Zora
Age: Late twenties.
Race: Human.
Appearance: Umber brown skin, black locs, grey eyes
Temperament: Gentle and resolute, Z isn't what you imagine when you think of an agent of the mysterious Magic and Anomalies Bureau. Kind, soft-spoken, and exceedingly polite, Z is Carter's former apprentice and something about them puts the old man on edge.
✤✤✤ Renard/Rowan
Age: Appears to be in their late twenties or early thirties
Race: Human. Maybe.
Appearance: Tall and slender, white-blonde hair, and gold eyes.
Temperament: Playful and flirtatious, talking to R always feels like a game of cat and mouse and you can never be sure which role is yours. Part sad clown, part trickster, and always maddening to work with, the only things you can be certain of with R is that they probably know what they're doing. Everything else is up in the air.
✤✤✤
Unknown aka "The Kestrel"
Age: ???
Race: Definitely not human.
Appearance: Tall, beautiful, elegant, with black hair and black eyes.
Temperament: The Kestrel is a complete unknown. It's impossible to say whether they are a lethal ally or deadly enemy, but either way they are a powerful dreamwalker. You don't know how long they've been watching you, but you're willing to bet that it's been longer than you're comfortable with.

Okay so disclaimer this is perspective comes mostly from how I have been experiencing Pirates SMP thus far, so if this doesn’t make sense that’s why.
So, it’s pretty clear that the factions have predetermined base relations with each other (Herons don’t like the Kites, the Kestrels pay the Kites to be mercenaries, etc.)
And I think the Kestrels were always supposed to dislike the Herons, from the way the group asked “Who don’t we like again?” after the cutscene. (Martyn answering Herons)
But when Martyn first meets them, I think they might have forgotten about that? Because there doesn’t animosity towards them from Kyle or Sausage. However I think Martyn remembered there was supposed to be beef there and so started to add that into his interactions so it would make sense for him to have similar feelings.
But because of this it kinda made it seem like Martyn joined the faction, was like “Herons suck” and than everyone else went “Makes sense to me,” and they all just started hating them.
Which absolutely adds to the disorganized energy they have and it’s kind of hilarious.

Inspired by this funny post about exactly what Knives would have done with multiple Plant babies had his plan succeeded. Warning: this fic is considerably less funny.
After everything, Wolfwood finds himself defaulted to child-minder.
This wildly amuses Zazie—who pops in and out of Eden with their swarm—and pleases Legato, who seems to think Wolfwood's bought the company line after seeing "the glory of Master Knives' power." He doesn't know if the news has gotten back to the Eye of Michael, whether the lucky few laugh behind their hands at the thought of the Punisher essentially being a babysitter, but Wolfwood doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks.
Less blood on his hands, he'd mused one night. You've always wanted me to stop killing, tongari; it only took... His tongue then crept into his throat, and he trained himself to never think of it again.
There's no denying that Knives isn't exactly happy about a human being around the "chosen," but there's no denying he didn't plan anything long-term for multiple Plant children, and Wolfwood—the faithful, compliant Punisher who made the miracle possible with his betrayal—can be entrusted, or at the very least, bent to his will. After all, his contract with the Eye may be over, but he doesn't trust Knives to trot out the old threat about the orphanage.
And when it comes down to it, the kids are better off with as little interaction with Knives—and Conrad and Elendira and Legato and the Eye—as much as possible. Maybe, Wolfwood thinks, he can spare at least one life if they’re around him enough, that they learn that all humans aren't monsters.
Despite the circumstances of their birth, he knows Vash, if he were here, would have treated them kindly, and really, it isn’t in Wolfwood to act otherwise; some kids back in Hopeland had similar terrible beginnings, and God knows it wasn't their fault.
But he takes one day at a time, playing tag in green grassy fields that are almost a pleasure to fall on, cajoling them to eat another bite of the terrible nutritious slop Conrad cooks up for them, retelling the same bedtime tales Miss Melanie used to recite to the younger ones. Even when they howl like kestrels (with Castor slicing up several packs of cigarettes), when Elendira waltzes in to pinch and prod and taunt (Orion can’t speak for days afterwards and Capella still won’t go near any humans besides Wolfwood), when he’s so tired that he can’t slip his shoes on (sometimes he barely manages to button his shirt), Wolfwood makes it work.
Add the fact that half of the Plant bunch didn't seem to have powers, and while that didn't guarantee them a short life being poked and prodded in Conrad's lab—Wolfwood had heard a hissed exchange, something about a Tesla—Knives seems more detached from them all the same, despite his initial proclamation of "Look at Vash. We thought the same of him. Leave them be, and they might turn out useful."
It had taken all of Wolfwood's strength that day not to punch him.
He tries not to think beyond that.
The kids are growing fast, though. He fears what will happen when Knives takes an active interest in them, but does the best he can, teaching letters and numbers and colors and bits of Earth history. They all resemble Knives—light-colored hair and marble-blue eyes—yet already have a startling variety of personalities. Izar, for instance, is sharp-tempered and prone to bursts of throwing the nearest objects at walls; Ursa and Adhara cling together all the time, but Regulus and Vega prefer to be on opposite sides of the room; Perseus is an utter clown, making his siblings burst into giggles every chance he gets; and Aster... out of everyone, Aster is most like Vash: protective, kind, and tender in a world that, especially now, takes advantage of stomping anything sweet out.
One day, Wolfwood’s perched underneath a tree, watching the kids play another round of hide-and-seek and occasionally glancing down at Pollux as he devours another anthology about flowers, when Aster plops right into his lap.
He smiles. “Don’t feel like joining them, Aster?”
“No,” Aster says, and yawns widely, showing off his baby teeth.
“What’s up, kiddo? Didn’t sleep last night?”
“Sort of...” Aster looks up at him, seeming to hesitate before saying, “Do you dream, Nico?”
Nico still reminds him of Livio, but Wolfwood never has the heart to correct them. “Sometimes,” he says, hoping Aster doesn’t ask of what. “Did you have one?”
Aster wrinkles his nose. “It was different than the others.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Like...” Aster prods his cheek with his tongue, thinking. “Castor said it was stupid.”
“Let me be the judge of that. What was it?” He hopes it’s not another nightmare about bugs; Zazie showing off the worms to the kids always gives at least one of them the creeps. Aquila still can’t look at an earthworm without bursting into tears.
“I thought I saw... I saw our Father,” Aster says, “but he was different. He had these strange clothes on, with... glasses on his face? Like yours, but they were orange. And round."
Wolfwood’s heart jolts in his chest. It takes all of his control not to leap up, to keep his smile steady, to ask calmly, “And?”
“I felt... safe. Like I do around you. He was in a room like this, but with these bundles of red flowers. Geraniums, like Pollux told us about the other day.” Aster tilts his head, watching Ursa and Regulus tackle each other, shrieking with laughter, as Castor complains that no one’s paying attention to the game at all. Aster shakes his head apologetically when Capella tries to wave him over. “And this word came to me, too, in the breeze. Vash?”
Wolfwood lets out a shaky breath.
“He’s the other angel, isn’t he?” Aster asks. “The one on the windows and paintings and everything.”
Wolfwood’s throat tightens. “Yeah,” he manages.
“Our Creator,” Aster continues, plucked from the familiar spiel Knives gives them on days where he feels like the kids aren’t appreciative enough. “But he seemed sad. Why would he be, if he’s in Paradise?”
“Who told you that?” Wolfwood asks, a bit too sharply.
Wolfwood swallows and looks up, trying not to show any emotion. “I... I don’t know if I can answer that question.”
"I thought you knew him?”
Aster flinches a little, but answers, “Zazie.”
Wolfwood inwardly curses. He’s going to beat their ass. What the hell possessed Zazie to do such a thing? “I did. But it was a long time ago.”
“Can you tell me about him?”
“I...” Wolfwood trails off. He doesn’t know if he’s allowed to, but more than that, how can he? I loved your father, and I betrayed him. He wasn’t like the Knives you all hero-worship, distant and cool and powerful. He was... he would have...
He remembers the vines swallowing up Julai. The screams that lasted for days, weeks, afterwards, along with the sucking bursts of breath and blood. The strangely beautiful purple blooms, their scent that still lingers in the walls. The endless litany of a piano playing that same damn song, over and over.
The howl that burst from his lips when he saw Vash, encased in stone, lips rounded in a silent scream.
“Nico?”
He stares into Aster’s earnest face, glad that his sunglasses are hiding the moisture building underneath his eyelids. He has kind eyes. “Yeah?”
“I think he wanted to talk to me, but couldn’t. But you can, Nico. Right?”
“Have you told Kn—your Father about this?”
“No. Should I?”
Wolfwood shakes his head. “I don’t know if that’s necessary, Aster.” He doesn’t know how Knives will react, and refuses to think of more than Vash is dead. You’ve known this for years. He doesn’t dare. Hasn’t even looked in the room where Vash is as good as a statue, arms stretched by the same knives that rise from his shoulderblades like wings.
But he looks at Aster. Vash’s son. Doesn’t he deserve to know him? Doesn’t Vash deserve more than to be a story?
"I called your father tongari," he begins, closing his eyes, "because of his hair. It stuck up in spikes, like this—" he gently arranges Aster’s into pointed tufts. "He was blonde, like you, but a shade darker than your hair. And he had eyes like yours, as blue as the desert sky. His favorite treat in the whole world was freshly-baked doughnuts, sprinkled with crystals of sugar, and when he laughed, it was like the sun coming out. He was a quick shot, too, but could never hurt anyone..."
