thinking sbt the way sloth rather than pride is eds sin in fma 03 and its interesting how even the act of trying to resurrect trisha kindve gets recontextualised in this light too.
in mangahood i think it's largely an act of conceit and pride - kids playing at God and thinking they could succeed at a long forbidden art, flying too close to the sun and getting burned for it.
that's true to an extent in 03 too, of course (eds little Icarus speech is present here too), but I think in light of 03s trajectory as a whole, it exemplifies sloth in the sense of hiding from an unknown future to seek safety in the comfort of the past. the elrics go from trying to reclaim a past forcibly taken from them, to ultimately ending up in another world entirely cut off from their past forever, and making peace with that and deciding to move forward with their own two legs.
ultimately what drove the elrics to break alchemys greatest taboo wasn't a sense of pride in their alchemical genius, but a fear of a world without their mother and a refusal to face reality. and yes, there is pride here too, but I think it merely stems from their slothful desire for a world that no longer exists.

An Analysis of Ed’s Gate: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
So, we’ve all noticed that the Gates (or the portals) of Truth appear differently depending on the person who’s been summoned before it, right?
Tumblr media
Al’s gate is a relief from “The Marrow of Alchemy” , a 15th Century Italian Alchemy text.
Tumblr media
Roy’s gate is inscribed with the Flame Alchemy array, similar to what’s tattooed on Riza’s back.
According to the wiki, the Gate of Truth is source of all alchemical knowledge, and serves as the entrance into the domain of God, where men are not meant to tread. The engravings reflect each person’s innermost self, and their understanding of “The Truth” i.e., the Universe and all contained within it. (does this mean that Roy’s perception of reality is only viewed through the lens of Riza Hawkeye and/or Flame Alchemy? Maybe. Maybe not. Up to you to determine if that makes them soulmates. MOVING RIGHT ALONG.)
What I found really interesting about this is that while every gate IS truth, a person’s perception of the universe will change how they view it. Understanding Ed’s gate through this light is fundamental to his character and how he perceives the world around him. And that’s the ride we’re going on today, because Ed’s gate is FASCINATING.
Tumblr media
Ed’s gate is the Tree of Life. Versions of the Tree of Life  can be found in practically every religious tradition from ancient Assyrian religion to modern-day Christianity. Most commonly, the Tree of Life is a symbol of knowledge, connecting heaven to the underworld and connecting ALL forms of knowledge together.
Ed’s gate isn’t just a bastardization of any Tree of Life. It’s specifically the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, called Eitz Chaim, from the Jewish tradition of Kabbalah.
Tumblr media
Kabbalists believe that that Tree is a representation of how the universe came to be. Branching out from the Tree are words for God (Elohim, El, Eloah, Adonai, and so on). The Tree ALSO represents where human knowledge of the origins of the Universe END. The tree flows from pure nothingness and energy to actual physical universe, in the roots, and then this process is thought to reverse itself. “Thus, the Kabbalist seeks to know himself and the universe as an expression of God and to make the journey of return by means of the stages charted by the spheres, until he has come to the realization he sought.” (source)
even MORE interesting, The Tree of Life can be interpreted as the very same tree that Eve ate the apple from, became “knowledgeable like God”, and was thus kicked from Eden.
So, what does this it mean for Edward “I don’t believe in God” Elric that the very essence of his being is tied to knowledge as an expression of the very divinity he refuses to acknowledge? Especially when we think about Al’s gate which is simply about the nature of alchemy, just knowledge for knowledge’s sake, what does it mean that Ed’s perception of Truth is indelibly intertwined with Faith, with God?
We know that Ed views himself as Icarus and that his attempt to bring his mother back was flying too close to the sun. That he’s bitter over having bitten the apple of Knowledge, and thus been kicked from Eden. The fact that his gate insists on there being a natural stopping point to what can be known by man, and it all flows back to God, seems almost antithetical to Ed’s character.
However.
I posit that it’s not. It’s not, at all. All gates are truth. The idea that energy is not limitless, that it starts from one place, intangible, flows to become physical, and then back again, losing none, only being transformed, is EXACTLY what Ed believes: In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be given up in exchange.
Ed’s belief in equivalent exchange is so strong that it bypasses a simple alchemical truth that must be learned to perform transmutations and becomes his very perception of the universe- his truth, or perhaps you could call it his faith. Whether or not this faith is “true” in the way one could evaluate religion is irrelevant; we know equivalence is a law of the universe, and Ed’s belief in it is what matters.
So, with this in mind, remember what Ed does to retrieve Al?
He gives up his gate. He literally destroys how he perceives what Truth is. I don’t think this means that Ed no longer believes in equivalence, but that he understands that there are powers that supersede conservation of energy.
After all, the Tree of Life is not only about energy changing forms, but about God creating the universe out of (in many interpretations) love. And when Ed destroys his Tree, destroys his ability to manipulate matter and participate in this great exchange, even destroys the natural stopping point that protects him from flying too close to the sun, does he not do that out of love, too?

no judging this viewpoint or opinion, but i’m never going to get why edward, in a lot of edits is more paired with parallels to sloth, which he has some, than pride. the boy literally damned himself and his brother into unbelievable hell with his hubris especially and while everyone has a valid opinion, edward’s pride is a crippling achille’s heel and also a staging point for immense growth, and the overcoming of pride into humility and realization of his role as not a prodigious alchemist, a combat fighter, a scientist, a big brother, any of it compare to his role as a human and the crux of that realization makes the climax so absolutely monumental.
okay, well, big brother for sure is tied because i never knew a better one.
i do think sloth people might think because i remember the youswell coal mines and how edward was not planning to act out of thinking it would be pointless in the end as the corruption would return / the laws of alchemy primarily equivalent exchange being imbalanced in what they were asking of him as a state alchemist  (again a major part of his journey is not relying solely on the laws of science / alchemical laws but in humanity ) so i guess i can see the ‘sloth’ in not doing anything until he really felt led by the burning of khayal’s home. still, edward elric? the epitome of icarus turned sun who fell from unbelievable pride and faces the embodiment of pride himself? it is an interesting take and one i don’t judge, but i definitely might want to look into it to see someone else’s lense.

Edward Elric is an Eboy. In This Essay I Will
In the manga Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa and the anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood produced by studio Bones, we follow the journey of our main character Edward Elric as he searches for a way to restore the body of his brother, Alphonse, after an alchemic ritual gone terribly wrong. Edward is a very recognizable character- one of strong personality, motivations, and of course, fashion sense. Edward Elric is an Eboy, an aesthetic often characterized by dark clothing, a middle part, a negative attitude generally referred to as "edge" in popular media, and drawing inspiration from grunge and punk aesthetics.
Edward Elric regularly displays these characteristics throughout his run in both the manga and the anime. His iconic outfit includes black, thick-soled boots, black leather pants and a black leather jacket, a black tank top, and a bright red coat emblazoned with the black symbol of the flamel. This dark and dramatic clothing draws much attention to the wearer and the aesthetic it is a part of.
As well as his clothing choices, Edward Elric as a person embodies the Eboy aesthetic. He's a very standoffish boy, often choosing to physically assault or otherwise harass strangers and antagonists as opposed to communicating or peacefully resolving issues with them, like his brother Alphonse. An example of this behavior is Edward's treatment of Paninya and the town of Rush Valley starting in Chapter 17 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. He starts by inciting violence from Paninya after verbally threatening her. She hurles a vase at him, one claimed to be worth 800,000 sens, which is a large sum in the currency of the fictional country of Amestris. The confrontation with Paninya ends with a good portion of the town of Rush Valley being badly deformed by Edward Elric's hasty alchemy. When forced into repairing the damages, Edward Elric shows more remorse at being forced to clean up after himself than guilty at the trouble and/or trauma he has caused the innocent residents. As discussed previously, Edward Elric is very "edgy", otherwise known as excessively dark and/or depressing, almost to the point of being humorous. Some examples of this behavior include when Elric discussed his lack of faith with young Rose, a woman he met in the city of Leore. He likened himself to Icarus, a man of myth who fashioned himself wings of wax and feathers. In the tale, when Icaraus flies too close to the sun (in Edward Elric's case, a metaphor for God), his wings melt and he falls back to earth. This anecdote is almost humorously dramatic while at the same time being very dark and intimidating.
Another example of Edward's Eboy aesthetic are his often very interesting design choices for alchemic repairs and creations. As shown in minute sixteen, second fifty-one of episode eight of part two of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, when Edward Elric transmutes a fully functioning baby carriage into a disturbing vehicle with a pointed spire on the front, red eyes on the sides, and a clearly bone-inspired set of handlebars (much to the mother's distress), Edward Elric has an extremely dark and punk-inspired sense of style. This is also shown in minute nineteen, second forty-two of episode three of part three of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood when Edward Elric performs a repair of a woman's balcony that he had previously destroyed. His repairs, although functional, were very in-line with his previously shown design style. Included in the design of the balcony were many skull-inspired figures, gothic-looking spires, and the dark figure of a snake bearing its teeth with a crescent moon displayed on its head. The woman he performs the repairs for is very surprised, if not slightly distressed, though this fact is either irrelevant or goes completely unnoticed to Edward. He, at the time, is more absorbed in the fact that he can do alchemy as opposed to the fact that his alchemy has created a motherfucking eyesore.
There are many examples of this style, behavior, and other characteristics throughout the franchise. Through the presented evidence, however, there is no argument of whether or not Edward Elric is an Eboy. Edward Elric is an Eboy as shown through his clothing style, alchemical style, and behavior in the manga Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa and the anime Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as produced by studio Bones.

“Oh fuck off.”
So much for polite conversation. The growl practically reverberates from the back of the blonde’s throat as golden eyes narrow and arms come to cross over the elder’s chest while he puffs out an exaggerated sigh if for nothing else but emphasis.
“Anytime you wanna talk ta m’ ya normally want sum’hin’. So out with it. Whaddaya do? Git in fuckin’ trouble ‘gain? I mean I guess we both got annoyin’ fuckin’ habits. I disappear n’ you c’n’t be yerself. So what else ya got, Trigham?  You nev’r jus’ wanna talk. So fergive m’ fer bein’ fuckin’ skeptic. ‘m a cynic. Yer jus’ gunna hafta deal with that.”

Russell swears that if he could roll his eyes any harder, they’d get stuck in the back of his skull, but his trademark smirk stays right where it is anyway. “Begging on my knees here for you to have an iota of faith in me.” He’s teasing (or at least hoping he comes across as teasing) here, in the ballpark of amused with Edward’s reactions thus far.

"Yo Tringham. If anybody fucks with yer kid bro n' you c'n't end'em, I'll break that fucker's leg so they c'n't out run ya."
Ed is beaming in appreciation for the term graveyard dead.

"Now why would you do that, huh? The chase is half the fun." He knows he's being dramatic but that's what's entertaining to him.

Golden eyes and golden hair whip around at the sound of the other’s voice and the singular hissed word.  It’s more than enough to get the attention of the eldest Elric - the true eldest Elric.

“Whaddaya want Tringham?”  The blond grumbles back. “Make it good n’ don’t waste m’fuckin’ time.”

“You could stand to drop the attitude, you know. No need to be so hostile over wanting to talk to an old friend again.” Russell crosses his arms over his chest. “Especially with that annoying little habit of yours where we talk, have a startlingly nice conversation, and then you disappear into the ether again.” He gestures vaguely with one hand, steely blue eyes watching through his hair.

🌈 for Alchemic-Elric!
Your Soil
Tumblr media
@alchemic-elric
“Ah, so you wish to know the color your spirit would manifest... Fair enough. Give me your palm. A simple touch is all that is needed.”
The Soil of Edward Elric
“A mind of ambition to rage against all constraints, Grand Auric.”
Tumblr media
Rarity: ★★★★★★★★★☆ (9/10)
Compatibility: Brothers, Ark, Mateus
Description: Surprisingly heavy, almost as if made in its entirety out of lead. It is moderately loose, individual grains visible and vividly reflective of their inner light - and inner struggle. The Soil swirls rapidly, filled with a youthful vigor of one who would boldly grasp their dreams. Holds a strong connection to another, one of a pair inseparable - twin equivalent atoms. Despite its fiery aesthetic, this spirit gives off a certain cold aura, as if absorbing the very heat from the air and stowing it safely away in the deepest recesses of its being, fearful of the warmth one day slipping away and leaving it alone to its winter. The vibrant glow it produces flickers wildly - either all but blinding or dim as a burnt out candlewick. How ironic - where gold may be stable, priding itself in inertia, this soul vies for a balance it can never truly attain. At its brightest, it casts a shimmer of multiple colors, hiding within the intricacy of the rainbow - perhaps the love it has received from others and guards fiercely? There is a creeping sediment nestled at the bottom of the vial, pushed away from the center but persistent in its advance. After all, even the most brilliant soul has a darkness inside, and even gold itself can give when exposed to aqua regia. Life is, in its essence, a clash of chemistry against chemistry, and in this way, the Soil is no different than any common or uncommon mineral.
Kaze’s comment: “Kid. Your soul - it concerns me. You are, in a way, as gold; I see the pride inside, the shield which you pray will protect you from those who would clip your wings - yet the darkness you harbor will climb ever higher, herding you towards the top, and I am afraid if you continue to push beyond your limits the sun will melt your icy stairwell, undo the wax that secures your feathers, and send you back down to the bottom - and can you weather another fall? Every mask shatters, and you glue the shards with your gold - and it is finite, and precious. Do not run, little one. Turn your eyes inward, confront the darkness you have so unfortunately cultivated. Weed it out - be it a grave sin, or a memory that haunts you. Do not let grief and guilt pull you down. Do you see the rainbow within? There is love out there for you, there is forgiveness, certain like the summer which comes after winter - you are a cycle. Never lose sight of the turning of the wheel. It shall be the weapon with which you face down thyself. Now, reach your hand to your chest. Feel the fire you have been gifted; And thaw.”
