As Yuusuke stares out of his bedroom window, he suspects movie night is cancelled. Snow sprays past at an angle, not yet the vicious storm news reports claimed it would transform into. He adjusts his hold on his phone, which has vibrated for the past hour as his friends messaged to apologise that they wouldn’t be able to make it tonight. Jin. Shingo. Samekichi. Jinpachi. Some of the other guys in Jinpachi’s cycling club who Jinpachi had invited along.

Yuusuke sighs, and he is still by the window when his mother comes in.

“Oh, Yuusuke, dear. One of your friends is at the door,” she says, and his brow furrows as he turns to her.

Someone actually turned up. Someone braved the wind’s snarled breath, its snow spit, and actually came. His mind whirls as he makes his way to the front door. With every step, he tries to figure out who it is by process of elimination, mentally crossing off those who confirmed they wouldn’t be able to come. He still doesn’t know who it could be when he arrives at the front door, and when he opens it, he blinks.

“Hi,” says who Yuusuke recognises as Yasutomo, one of Jinpachi’s friends. The guy bares his teeth. Yuusuke thinks he’s smiling. At least, he’s trying to smile. “I brought rice balls. You like them, right?”

“I do,” says Yuusuke, staring too much, and he steps aside as Yasutomo shuffles out of the darkness and into the bright entrance room.

Yasutomo reaches Yuusuke and holds up a plastic tub. When Yuusuke raises his hands to accept it, Yasutomo plonks the tub into his grasp and continues forward, trekking in snow. Within a few paces, Yasutomo’s slow strides start to falter until he stops completely, and he surveys his surroundings with his face faintly scrunched. The wind has whipped his cheeks pale, leaving him with a pink nose.

He sniffs loudly then snaps his head around, setting his eyes on Yuusuke.

“So is everyone else already in your room?” asks Yasutomo. Yuusuke scratches his chin sheepishly.

“I think you’re the only one coming, sho.”

Yasutomo gawks at Yuusuke. “Huuuh?”

Yuusuke nods, cringing a bit.

“The weather report said there’s a snow storm coming,” he tells him. “The roads are going to be dangerous, sho.”

“Then the others should have fitted fat studded tires and flat pedals onto their bikes,” says Yasutomo. He throws up his hands. Some snow dislodges from his coat. “I did.”

A shudder ripples through Yasutomo and his features contort, like he’s about to yawn or sneeze, but he doesn’t and his mouth crumples shut. It leaves him with a sour expression. Yuusuke frowns.

“If you don’t head off soon, the storm will be too bad for you to go anywhere before the morning,” Yuusuke points out. Yasutomo cocks his head at him, quirking his brow.

“So...?” says Yasutomo. “You’ve got spare beds, don’t ya? Or are you worried about letting a feral animal into your fancy smancy house?”

“No!” Yuusuke promises quickly, showing him his palms. “I mean that’s fine with me, sho! But it’s just gonna be us two.”

“That doesn’t matter,” replies Yasutomo. He twitches his head back and flashes his teeth. “That means more snacks for us, right?”

Yasutomo jerks his thumb toward himself and smirks. Within a few seconds, Yuusuke’s face matches the one opposite him and he gives a nod.

“So, what movies have you got?” asks Yasutomo.

Yuusuke beckons to him. “I’ll show you my collection, sho.”

Despite being in an age of technology where digital formats are becoming more and more commonplace, Yuusuke keeps a physical collection in a wooden unit in his room, painted in garish colours chosen back when he was twelve. Yasutomo squats by the unit, browsing through the selection of cases, and lets out a bark of glee.

“I haven’t seen this in years!” he says, and he takes out a DVD case to show to Yuusuke.

“‘The Year Without a Santa Claus’?” Yuusuke reads aloud, surprised that Yasutomo has seen it at all. Yuusuke only watched it because his brother gave him the DVD years ago as a joke gift. It’s an American movie from the seventies that Yuusuke found... endearing. 

“S-Sure,” says Yuusuke, recollecting himself. Yasutomo puts it into the player, sits next to Yuusuke on the bed and opens the plastic tub of rice balls, offering them to his companion. Yuusuke plucks one out and eats it.

“Made them myself,” brags Yasutomo while Yuusuke chews. They’re good.

“I have bepsi,” replies Yuusuke once he has swallowed. “I didn’t make it though. I got the cans from a shop.”

Yasutomo laughs. Yuusuke can’t detect any mean-spiritedness and grins, blushing a little.

They sit together on the bed, sharing rice balls and swigging from soft drink cans as they watch the stop motion animated movie, and when the movie ends, the snow storm has them trapped inside its wailing. However, neither of them so much as glance at the window, and by the end of the third movie, they’re slumped together, sound asleep.

The saltiest cracker you know is me, Bepsi!10. Most disliked arc (in this case, chapter)? Why? 

I bet you saw this shit comin a mile away huh?

Chapter 2.

Now, it might surprise you, but Hoshi dying isn’t even the worst part of the chapter for me. That’s more emotionally gut punching me and my hopes and dreams that joke characters can live past chapter 3. Actually, Hoshi is without a doubt the BEST part of Chapter 2 even with his death, just because of how amazingly he’s written. 

Sadly, even Hoshi cannot save this chapter from showing just how RUSHED and UNPOLISHED it is. Because holy jeEZ THERE’S A LOT WRONG (albeit it’s personal opinion for the most part). So while you may know them, or may learn something new from my opinion, that’s all cool! Under the cut as Chapter 2 is dissected and torn into to learn why it is sadly, my least fav of V3.

- RUSHED.

Now, this is really easy to see, and I’m sure many others have noticed it as well, but it bears a lot of repeating because it’s a problem. Chapter 2 was rushed to high heavens, in the sense that it mainly serves to push the plot along and nothing more. Things happen too quickly in the story at that point, and while the rest of the game is better off for it, this is the ONLY chapter that REALLY does it so blatantly, and it feels very choking as a result of it.- Tenko’s attachment to Himiko needed to happen, absolutely, but I feel like more should have been done in Chapter 1 to show Tenko trying to talk to her more? Maybe, “OOO maybe himiko wants to be my friend??” and more interactions that show that Tenko isn’t just attaching herself to Himiko b/c she’s “the creepy gay” character. - Toujou becoming the fucking supermaid. This one is the most obvious, but mmm. Everyone relying on her suddenly feels super forced, as characters like Shinguuji and Hoshi and even Maki herself, all ask Toujou to do something for them. It feels out of character for them, and the fact that THAT interaction is the MOST she gets in Chapter 2 before the trial is fucking trash and I’ll explain why in a later point, but you can just TELL that they needed SOMETHING to give her ANY story relevance, and it hurts her character a LOT. - Kaito suddenly wanting to help Maki’s super fucking weird. Maybe if it showed Kaito like “sorry Shuichi maybe later, I wanna try talking to Maki” more in this Chapter to really see that he wants to help her, or even just him going more like “hey Shuichi wanna include Maki in our training? I feel like she could use it.” or ANYTHING that mentions Kaito reaching out to Maki more. Because as it is now, it feels like he’s suddenly placing an all or nothing bet and it makes him, p unlikable at that point b/c Shuichi just goes with it for seemingly no reason because “yeah I guess i gotta progress the plot”. - Those are the main points. Maki is done surprisingly well, actually, she’s really good here. Being sus like that and actually not letting you do FTE’s was cool, and i liked it a lot. Angie’s slow buildup was also pretty good as well, but I think they coulda put Tsumugi in w/ Himiko at some point so it’s not ‘suddenly everyone’s brainwashed!’ in chapter 3, as a slower buildup would do it good! Or at least, more buildup, I should say.

- CLUNKY.

This one is a bit harder to explain, and it goes in hand with the pacing issue, but lemme try. Some of the events and dialogue in Chapter 2 just feel, really clunky? Like, Shuichi’s an emotional guy and I totally understand that, but I don’t think he’d just spill his feelings to the guy that punched him for showing weakness not even 2 days ago? I dunno, maybe it’s just me. It feels like a lot of Chapter 2 was glued into the story as requirements rather than actually to tell a story. It comes in a lot of ways, as previously mentioned a lot of relationships are just ‘suddenly there’ rather than actually built up, IE Kaito and Maki, Tenko and Himiko, etc... and it makes the entire Chapter feel like it’s meshed together with ideas that Kodaka REALLY wanted to be in the game or knew would happen later on, but just couldn’t fit them in, so he shoved them in an early chapter and hoped for the best.

- TOUJOU’S ABILITY TO DO JACK DIDDLY SHIT IN TERMS OF STORY.

Somehow, they managed to make one of the stars of this chapter barely active in it. Can you fucking believe that? Like, no really, if you work off of fan translations I want you to open the translation you have, hit CONTROL+F and search for Toujou and see like, the 30 lines she has before the trial. It’s so MINIMAL, it’s so BASIC, and in those 30 sentences she’s treated like a PLOT DEVICE rather than a CHARACTER. I’m sure a bit of the reason as to why Toujou isn’t as popular as most of the other girls is just how hard the Chapter hits her in terms of not giving her any character development (even in the bonus interaction she’s just “i do this for my job” for fucc sake). Like, even if it was played for a laugh that she’s just so constantly work-focused, or the writing took it as a bit of a punchline for some dry humor (”hey toujou what’re ya doin?” “working.” and just have awkward eye contact and the ‘WOW this is awkward’ thought in Shuichi’s head after a few “...” between the both of them as it happens. easy comedy. see???) it at least would make her seem somewhat important compared to the cast. Honestly, it’s like the Tsumugi Effect but in 2 chapters instead of 6. By doing nothing in terms of plot, she basically puts on this huge fucking sign that says “HEY GUYS IM NOT STORY RELEVANT BECAUSE NOTHING IS HAPPENING TO ME SO I WILL PROBABLY DIE AS A KILLER OR VICTIM” Her trial behavior is really hit or miss as well, because some might find her ruthlessness to be really cool and makes her actually fucking interesting at any point in the story, while others might find it unlikable, excessively cruel, or just out of character for Toujou no matter how desperate she may be. Let alone that her US demographic prolly tanked quite a lot w/ her story focusing on POLITICS of all things (one of the three no-no’s in any conversation), making her very very hard to like, besides on an aesthetic level. Let alone her FTE’s are the worst in the game, as you still barely learn anything about her outside of “im a maid and im good at my job” or other points that the main story already tells you (besides that she once coddled a man so hard he became dependent and that her only weakness is not cutting konjac right ever). It just makes her feel like a barren and incomplete character.

- TOUJOU’S ABILITY TO DO EVERYTHING SO WELL SHE CAN EVEN FUCK HERSELF OVER AMAZINGLY.

Everyone has heard me go on and on about this, but if it doesn’t get said no one will know it so I keep repeating it until the end of time.By making her plan so complex, she basically fucks herself. By making a crime that only someone as competent as her could accomplish, it fucks her because only she can do it. XD. Literally, who do you think would have been able to do all that shit in one night? Saihara’s too weak to drown Hoshi. Don’t fight me on this, because if you seriously believe the detective in training with little self defense training (he worked on infidelity and missing pet/kid cases for fuck sake, his life isn’t really on the line all that often so he prolly wouldn’t know or have to train all that much to protect himself) can take the tennis player that killed over 200 people and has been playing tennis basically all his life (enough to go INTERNATIONAL in MIDDLE SCHOOL) in a fight, we’re gunna need to have a talk.Gonta’s too heavy to use the ropeway.Kiibo’s too heavy to use the ropeway and too weak to carry Hoshi’s body.Himiko’s too weak to drown someone and attempt to shove them in the staircase (which I will touch on real soon here on why even attempting to frame her the way Toujou tried to was dumb as shit).Angie’s... lbr here, prolly missing a few too many tools in her toolbox to really think of a ropeway to kill Hoshi with.Shinguuji’s too weak (and before I get arguments on this, if u think this underweight twig of a man can take out Hoshi when Hoshi’s prolly faster than him and could just run ur wrong)Maki who was the Child Caregiver at the time would be seen as too weak to do anything to Hoshi too (even if she lifts kids, again, Hoshi is fucking rIPPED and has killer legs)Ouma’s too weak (i mean he’s underweight and looks like a twig)Kaito’s a fucking moron when it comes to master plans and wouldn’t have been able to plain something like a ropeway murder (let alone his idol complex wouldn’t have let him kill Hoshi most likely... unless it was a Mondo situation but that’s a later talk)Tenko’s also a fucking moron when it comes to long term planning let alone she wouldn’t touch a man unless to flip him to death, which makes the ropeway seem almost pointlessTsumugi’s too weak to (i mean... rlly. u rlly think she could take him down? under the assumption she isn’t the mastermind ofc at this point in the story, but even then sneak murdering all the kills seems kinda.... eh? too hard for her to do.) Miu’s also a fucking moron that wouldn’t think of using a ropeway (actually, she prolly woulda done the smarter option and just pushed Hoshi’s body out his fucking window since a ropeway would be too much effort)By process of COMMON SENSE, only Toujou would make something so NEEDLESSLY COMPLICATED in an attempt to murder a guy. 

- THE DUMBEST PLAN ON EARTH AND HOW YOU COULD PLAN A SIMILAR MURDER AND GET AWAY WITH IT EASY. 

Toujou’s plan is fucking dumb when you can think of SO many other ways to get Hoshi killed with more leeway as to who coulda done it. So I bring up the window in his lab, because literally you could just push him out of it and the fall would prolly splatter that midget cunt on the ground no problem. Hell, even handcuff him. Nearly anyone could have pushed Hoshi out of the window, meaning there’s a possibility that Maki or Kaito could have done it w/o that stupid fucking ropeway let alone anyone at night (or hell even during the DAY since time of death was obscured), and it wouldn’t LEAVE THE FUCKING GLOVE.MMMM OKAY RANT HERE REAL QUICK I MEAN IT THAT FUCKING TRASH BAG GLOVE IRRITATES ME. Like, hhh I know Kodaka wanted to make a case where something like the glove gets the killer caught, but HOLY SHIT was it poor to use in a case like this. It not only feels like it’s out of place for her not to just get it in the morning, but why the fuck would she use her gloves anyways?? Why not use Hoshi’s hat? Anyone could use Hoshi’s hat as hand protection down the moronic ropeway and since it’s a beanie it’s prolly made of more strong material than I guess whatever her shit gloves are made of, since they tore like fuckin trash when she went down the ropeway. As someone that wears cut and heat protection gloves because of my job, the gloves she uses are HORRIBLY inefficient (let alone if she’s cleaning before touching food w/ them on... like please don’t that can cause so many health problems) to try and stop ropeburn. She could have also just poisoned everyone, or killed them all in their sleep, to make her job easier on herself. Can’t have a trial if no one’s there after all right? No one would suspect Toujou working on her fuckin job to come and snap their necks during the night or w/e, or poison their food before the show. But also framing Himiko is really fucking dumb. Like, she expects me to believe that Himiko, who is only 2 more pounds than Hoshi mind you, managed to drown him and stuff him in that staircase, and pull him out during the show in under a minute. LOL no. Hoshi looks like he can break her arms like fucking toothpicks without even trying?? Let alone her laziness makes it look REALLY hard for her to have planned a fucking murder. The fact that like, the first hour of the trial wants me to believe Himiko could be the killer is asinine, just because of how basically fucking illogical it is.What Toujou could have done instead, was leave his body drowned in the sink. Yeah, it’d be harder because not everyone can drown Hoshi (ie. Himiko and Ouma and prolly a few others that are considered sticks or weak), but there are a lot of people who could, and drowning someone is a lot easier than the stupid ropeway piranha bullshit. OR PUSH HIM OUT HIS WINDOW. JUST KILL EVERYONE THAT WAY COME ON.Actually, she coulda killed two people easy. Just have someone gullible like Saihara come to meet her at night in the lab after she’s already pushed Hoshi out the window (or even just come running to his room with a bullshit excuse that she saw a shadow ‘running away’ and saw that something happened in the tennis lab) and push him out the window too. Boom, makes it look like a murder gone wrong, and the only alibi that’d be able to testify about the events is hers. Easy win, everyone else gets executed.I get it, in the end, it needs to be a solvable mystery in a mystery game, but it ends up making Toujou look like a complete moron as a result of it, which is unfortunate.

- MOTIVE VIDEOS ARE RIGGED AS SHIT.

Upon learning what hers and Hoshi’s are, it seems almost rigged that they would have to be the killer and victim respectively. Hoshi’s telling him to ‘kys’ and Toujou’s saying ‘lol go kill someone’ makes it like... even if everyone else saw theirs that they’d be like.. the only two to really act on theirs besides MAYBE Miu or POSSIBLY Angie. And then we also see Ouma’s?? And his is just actively “lol u don’t kill bitch but u should do it anyways” making it seem almost counter productive. Like, bitch it just said Ouma made a rule that no killing was a thing and u genuinely expect his ass to break that? ha. The odds were stacked against the two of them, which makes it only seem more forced in the long run. Which is great from a meta standpoint, but a story can be meta while still being fun, enjoyable, and flowing functionally and logically. Which this chapter isn’t really.

- THE SADLY NOT REDEEMING BUT STILL SUPER GOOD HOSHI FACTOR.

Now, the one thing that I can praise this chapter for really well despite all its shortcomings is Hoshi’s characterization and his story. For one chapter he really makes a hard hit at the time, and it’s easy to become engrossed in his little background story about him wanting to find a reason to live. The real cherry on top is his writing and his interactions with the few people he interacts with. with Kaito, it really shows the disposition that Kaito has against him and just how Hoshi is so understanding of others and like... nice. Even when he wants a goal that goes against everyone, he still respects them. “I won’t do something reckless to endanger everyone.”, and acknowledging that it’s an entirely selfish reason why he wants to find the videos and will still not hurt anyone to do it. He may have threatened to show Maki’s video to everyone in exchange for his own from her, but he never hits her or directly harms / threatens her w/ violence or anything extremely dirty. It’s respectable. Ohhh, and Saihara’s dynamic with him is just so sPOT ON HERE. Between the great advice and compliments in general he has for Saihara such as “the world can be bright for someone that’s looked down for so long, be careful” and “you’re confident compared to before, like a weight is lifted off your back. it’s a good look for you” and other such flattery, to Hoshi being a bit more open to Saihara about his feelings (feeling jealous about everyone else having a reason to live, wanting to find one himself, openly admitting he feels he has no purpose in his life and wants to find a reason to be happy like everyone else, etc.). But this dynamic goes both ways, as Saihara also can read Hoshi super fucking well. Like, seeing the Tennis Lab is a great example of it. When Hoshi states the past is behind him, Saihara thinks to himself ‘but then why are you looking at the court with such sad eyes Hoshi-kun?’ and it’s like, just really nice that Saihara’s not dense? Like, Hoshi expresses himself pretty poetically, with the way he talks and whatnot, acting like a wise sage type w/ endless wisdom all the time, so Saihara being able to read past all the flowery language to just hear “god i miss tennis” or “im depressed” is really REALLY refreshing, and a nice balance to see. If you do Hoshi’s FTE’s it personally makes it even better, but that’s not a requirement so moving on. Even just Saihara asking him things like “are you doing well?” or “Is this what you want?” or “or just the small but surprisingly deep talks they just seem to have with one another are tiny details that really complete the dynamic that they can both read each other and can react to one another super well. It feels balanced between the both of them, even in Chapter 1, and it’s a shame Hoshi had to die because I would have LOVED to see how far it could go and how much it could have been expanded on in the later chapters. 

Sadly however, no matter how great Hoshi is, it can’t save Chappie 2 from it’s endless faults and gripes that I have with it, that ultimately make the story less entertaining as a result.

hihihi okay. so omori spoilers, tw for argument, what can be seen as abusive/toxic behavior, death

this is sunny and mari’s argument, aka my first attempt at an omori fanfic! okay.

It was a beautiful day outside. The wind must’ve been the softest breeze, and the air just warm enough to be comfortable. Cumulus clouds strolled lazily over the air, curling as twisting about and graying near the bottom; a storm must have been coming soon.

As he used his thumb to pick at the aching callouses on his fingers, Sunny Suzuski wanted nothing more than to bask in the sunlight outdoors. He’d kill to fetch his friends and have a picnic in the Faraway park, munching on peanut butter jelly sandwiches and grapefruit from the fruitful tree in his backyard, lovingly nicknamed Mother Grape.

However, he was stuck inside, practicing a duet with his sister, Mari. Over the months he had been practicing this piece rigorously, he had grown to hate it. Just the sound of the beginning notes struck on the piano made his stomach drop; dark, horrible things crawling just at the edge of his vision as he tried to focus.

And here he was, practicing the duet, fingers pressing on the strings of his violin, bow gliding across. As the song progressed, he didn’t make any mistakes; a sickly hope began to bubble within him, gross and beautiful all the same. However, his thoughts distracted him- he cringed deeply as he heard the key note at the climax of the music come out flat.

Mari came to a stop. In the panicked silence between his mistake and her imminent scolding he took the chance to excuse himself from the room. “I, uh,” he said, worries swirling in his brain like a grimy stew. “think I just need some water. I’ll be right back.”

As he just the door behind him, only when he was fumbling with the bow in his hand did he realize that he had accidentally brought his violin with him in the heat of the moment.

He was about to set it down when he saw the end of the banister leading to the stairs. A twisted idea sparked in his mind. He felt his palms dampen on the wood of the instrument, while something clawed at the edges of his thoughts. He felt an anxiety bubble within his chest.

What Ifs and Hows swirled around his mind, but by the time any reasonable excuse to not do it had come to him, he was at the top of the stairs.

As he looked down to the base of the staircase, he felt his heart quicken in his chest, pounding out of his ears and making it so he could hardly hear. His hands trembled, and he couldn’t calm down, no matter what he tried.

He thought back to all the times Mari had denied him free time- time that should have been spent with friends or at school events. Time that should have been spent alone in his room or on grocery trips with his mother. Time that should not have been spent repressing the growing resentment within him every time his sister said, “No, let’s do that again,” or “I thought you wanted this to be perfect.”

He felt an insatiable rage rise within him, so much so that his hands moved without his consent- gripping the bow so tight as to snap the handle, he could hardly focus his eyes as he threw and watched as his violin tumbled down. The sound of the wood cracking almost set him free, a sick freedom, breaking his chains with his own blood.

He could hardly understand a thing as Mari rushed out of the piano room and towards him, asking, “Why, Sunny? We had worked so hard, and you threw it all away; And for what?”

He clenched his hands into fists and dug his nails into his palms. He tried to breathe, but he couldn’t get any air. He tried to focus, but his vision stayed blurred. He tried to persist, but a guilty ache kept him sick and chained.

He couldn’t be here right now. He just couldn’t- not now, not when she was so angry and he was so… guilty.

He tried to walk down the stairs, feet heavy on the wooden floor. Everything felt so vibrant yet so dull- the sounds of his breathing and the creaking of the wood were ear-splitting, but he could hardly register his sister’s yells.

“No! You need to tell me why you did this!”

Mari walked in front of Sunny, blocking his path to keep him stuck. Stuck in this pain, this misery, a cycle his sister held on to do desperately that he wanted nothing more than to break. He was so terribly upset, no doubt having as much questions as she did. He felt a white-hot rage in the pit of his stomach, clawing and tearing it way up into his eyes, blinding his judgement and reason, his self control and attention.

And he did all he could think to do, and pushed.

...The eldest sibling of the Suzukis tumbled down the stairs, eventually crashing onto the very violin Sunny threw down.

Sunny was in shock.

What had he just done?

"Mari?!" He calls to her.

No response.

I'm sorry, but I HAD to write a little more to your thing because it was SO GOOD.

You. Are. A. Great. Writer!

AMA Transcript: Bloom

Next up, @drywavelength stopped by to answer questions about their Resbang, Bloom! Here’s some of what went down:

Q: I'll start with the usual: what inspired you to write this story!

drywavelength: Ok, so I think the first thing that inspired me was a fanart that I saw?: http://bepsi-bb.tumblr.com/post/149943739503/pink-carnations-for-a-mothers-love. Also I love art where people have like... flowers growing out of them and stuff. They're just. Pretty. And hmm as far as the idea for the fear goes?? I think I might have seen something for a writing prompt somewhere that gave me the idea to apply something similar to this story but I can’t quite remember.

Q: Can you tell us more about the flowers that you picked for each character?

drywavelength: Crona was easy because of the thorns and roses in the manga, as well as Tsubaki obviously, but the others took more thought. Maka's I picked because of the "i'll be waiting for you" meaning, that took the longest for me to decide because there were so many other cool flowers that could be applied to her. Poppies were for Soul because of their connections to dreams and such. Black star was uhhh… I think it had something to do with playfulness? And also Hyacinth was like, Apollo's lover in Greek mythology who got hit by a Frisbee and died or something, so I made him get hit by a Frisbee in that one scene just cause?? Kid's flowers were cosmos because they represent balance. Patty had a sunflower just because she's like, a happy sunny person and I thought it would fit. And I think daisies also had something to do with motherhood similar to Medusas, but I thought it would be more in relation to her sister and how she wants to protect her.

Q: Did you have a favorite scene or part when you were writing?

drywavelength: OK this seems weird because I was trying to write Croma but all of my favorite scenes were of Soul, especially in his dreams. I think the first of Soul's dreams might be my favorite? For some reason? OH but also the scene where Crona kills Medusa. I just think that writing for Crona was a lot easier at the beginning of the fic, but got a lot harder as it went along, so there are some scenes with them that I’m not particularly fond of fnjdsafj.

Q: What about it got harder, to you? That is definitely one of the Resbang moods.

drywavelength: Well ummm at the beginning, they were pretty similar to how they acted in canon, I wanted them to be shy and scared but also passionate about what they wanted to protect, and I wanted them to gain confidence as they went along, but I didn't really know how to do that to make it true to their character and I think it lost a lot of elements of Crona's personality whoops. Especially when it involved romantic scenes, I really didn’t think those through well enough.

Q: What is your writing process like?

drywavelength: Ok so my writing process... because I've never written much before, I didn't have much of a plan, but I tried to plan out as much as I could before it got started. When I started writing it went smoothly for a bit, but I had a lot of fragments that I wanted to expand into longer scenes and when I eventually got to the scenes I just.... didn’t know what to do, so a lot of it was written last minute and it kind of shows. And lots of those smaller fragments of scenes were meant to be longer, but never really got to that point, but at least I was able to make it a complete story.

Q: What did you use for writing motivation or inspiration? Any music playlist or anything?

drywavelength: Hmm I do like to listen to lo-fi and stuff when I just want background music, but the Gorillaz album "the fall" inspired a lot of the more... anxious scenes. So I snuck it in just cause I wanted to. For example, when I was trying to write the scene with kid in the grave I would listen to Phoner to Arizona on repeat for some reason. Q: What types of scenes did you want to expand on or add?

drywavelength: The scene with Liz and Patty in the forest comes to mind. And the like, entire part where Black Star goes to fight Arachne and then Maka and Crona do the same. That was meant to be longer and better. Also... the scene where Maka confesses to Crona probably just needs to be re-written entirely. I do wish I could have added more scenes with Star and Kid.

Q: Did you have a favorite Croma scene?

drywavelength: hhjff I’m trying to seperate them in my head cause theyre getting all mushed together, but probably the one where they're having a picnic, maybe? I could imagine that one the clearest in my head as I was writing it.

Q: One thing I looooooved in the fic was how you tied up all the stuff in the end, with regrowing everyone, did you have that in mind in the beginning or was that something that came later?

drywavelength: Well I knew I wanted pretty much everyone to die, but I thought that would be a shitty ending fdjs. So I thought for a while on what I could do after that, and the idea came to me at one point and I got really excited about it aahaha. And I’m just like "this is very strange and doesn’t make a lot of sense but hopefully people won’t question it."

Q: I really love the Oni and black room scenes in the fic, they were probably some of my favorites - did you have an in-universe explanation for Oni?

drywavelength: I wanted Soul's fear to be of dreams and of demon-like things, so I thought that him dreaming about the Oni would fit in well.

Q: Do you feel like you've grown as a writer in the process of completing the fic?

drywavelength: Yes, I definitely have, especially through making mistakes and procrastinating RIP.

Q: Do you have any beta comments you would like to share? :D

drywavelength: I didn’t really have an official beta (I probably should have) but my friend read a lot of the fic at the beginning to help a bit, and I just sort of ran ideas by her to see if they would work. OH and another friend read part of the beginning too, she said that the like... conversations and the way I was making people talk felt a bit off, so I tried to fix that the best I could.

Q: Do you have other projects you’re working on, or planning?

drywavelength: So um, I’ve been playing D&D with my friends recently, so I wanna write a fic where the characters all play D&D idk. Another thing I wanted to explore more with Bloom was my interpertation of Asura, so he’s going to be in college and DMing for a bunch of high school kids. It’s going to take a long time to write because I’m confused about a lot of things when it comes to D&D, but it’s going to be all of the characters kind of growing as people and dealing with their problems in real life and their D&D sessions help them with that in order to become a more tightly knit group and survive high school, so yah.

Q: How was working with your artist? Like what was the process involved, did you guys talk a lot?

drywavelength: DSGJJ I love the both of themmm. I didn’t talk a lot with sarah, only a few emails but it all worked out. I was able to talk to thenoctivagant a lot more, keeping them updated, but mostly it was just me screaming about their lovely art and screaming about procrastinating. Both of their art is so good, I can’t get over those gifs.

Q: Do you think you'll Resbang again dry???

drywavelength: Yaaa.

aababbaa but! I do have one I really wanna talk about!Under the cut you see, for I ramble a lot.

- Hifumi !

I love him man.There’s so much about his character that’s so relatable and lovable to me. I think that’s why DR1′s amazing theme of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” really comes on in with him. On the outside he looks like as one would expect of a gross anime fan. Fat, not attractive, pretty gonk-y, speaks all fuckin over the top like an anime, so on and so forth. But it’s when you learn about him that really makes him super fucking amazing.His past is like, something that I can relate to myself in a bit. As someone that ‘became a bully to stop the bullying’ and stopped when he could like… find enjoyment and fun in an anime character and put all of his effort into that instead. He’s drawing because he shows appreciation for her, and that’s super sweet. And quick tangent before I continue, but “he only makes hentai” is a bad argument. Like, he does and I ain’t gunna vouch that he doesn’t but lots of people do. What’s wrong with it? Like, is it a crime to make that stuff??? Clearly not if Doujin creators are a big deal in Japan, able to have hour long lines at their stands at conventions, with people willing to purchase their merch with devoted fans. Like, ppl are so quick to demonize sexuality it’s CRAZY.

Anyways, back on topic. He’s got a great personality. He’s like, a bit of a stuck up jackass when ya first see him, but it’s the later interactions that just really sell it for me. He’s got some of the FUNNIEST lines in my opinion, between saying that his punches towards Ishida will go faster b/c he has no arm hair so there’ll be less wind resistance, or his numerous anime and videogame quips (”rebooting my devices; please stand by”, “You haven’t reached that point in our friendship! You don’t have enough friendship points to be asking those questions!”, “If he tries that (in context it’s mondo going to attack monokuma) Oowada Mondo-dono’s health will go to zero!”, “the whole anime plotline for the first episode outside the trash room”, for a few) are all just absolutely stellar to me. He’s unabashedly awkward because he’s just so confident in himself and what he loves, and it makes me happy to see him so enthusiastic!

Speakin of that, let’s go more into it!!He’s so passionate about himself, and just has a gay ol time doing everything. It’s absolutely amazing honestly. His speaking is just so energetic! He’s so happy to do what he does as an artist and I absolutely love it! It’s almost inspirational, that he can be so unabashedly confident and happy about his skill, and it shows just how much love he puts into his art. And real talk here, but Hifumi isn’t even that much of an asshole. Like, people make him out to be some kinda monster, when that’s absolutely not the case. “he killed Ishimaru though!” yeah, because Celes lied and said that Ishimaru sexually assaulted her, took what would be at that point Hifumi’s close friend, and said Ishimaru planned to kill him and probably everyone else. Like, murder is still wrong, but he didn’t do it because “oh celes asked me to”. He did it for his sense of justice- in that he hated to see someone like Celes be hurt. : / don’t diss my dude for tryin to protect a friend yo. His spats with people are less mean spirited and just more fun and lightheared dickery. Like, when you crack shit with your friends. He picks fights, but it’s never out of malicious intent. It’s like having a good time or trying to lighten the atmosphere, albeit in his own goofy anime way.Even in Chapter 2, the spat he has with Fukawa in the library over literature and doujin isn’t as aggressive as it prolly should be. He takes most insults with stride (unless they insult the 2-D works of course!!) and it feels a lot more like a cliche anime rivalry (esp. when he says shit like “you are my ARCH NEMESIS, I can’t make you tea!” when Fukawa asks why he only made some for Celes). At least, that’s what Yamada thinks.

He’s confident, which a lot of people always like to assume makes someone a dick or feature it as a negative trait rather than a positive one, when it can go both ways. Hifumi being able to have such high standards that he openly admits to not reading other people’s works because he can just write a story he wants to see himself can be considered narcissistic, but having the confidence to sell his works starting from high school (prolly when they were more pg and ‘fade to black’) and get over 10,000 copies sold is something to be proud of and I’m glad that he is! It’s a stigma that artists have to hate themselves, or suffer for their work, but I disagree. When an artist is healthiest and happiest in their mind, that’s when they make the best work. Vincent Van Gogh made the Starry Night when he was in a hospital getting better for his depression and mental relapses after all. Hifumi’s not fit, and he definitely has some areas where people would consider him unhealthy such as his eating habits and whatnot, but he also focuses on being happy and being himself as a first priority. He eats because he enjoys it, and remembers to have all his meals. He does what he likes without actively hurting others, because he just enjoys doing it, and he loves to promote his favorite anime character. He’s a dorky geek that says shit like “swag” and fuckin says “i forget not everyone is as savvy as I am” which is just so fucking amazing to me it’s both hilarious and fun.

Also haha, the fact that he’s making Doujin from a character who’s overweight is kinda nice to me, because she’s not a “conventionally attractive” anime girl with big titties and a small stomach; she’s chubby and different, and I think that’s nice to show what Hifumi’s interests are as well as what anime really means to him. It’s not just about getting his rocks off, it’s about the fun and enjoyment and the feelings that anime can give you and what your mind can do. It’s why he had a dream about going on a date with a magical girl, the kinds of characters who inspire friendship and happiness, for fucks sake. When he was lonely and had no friends and became a bully to counteract the way people treated him, he found something that would be there for him, and he wanted to support it ever since. Which is a powerful and very overall positive message to give people.

But he has great messages too. Messages about being able to be yourself and have fun, no matter how “dorky” or “lame” your interest might be to others. He encourages people to have fun in their own ways, even if he wants to promote Princess Piggles, with lines such as “what might be boring to me might be another persons moespiration! With that in mind, look for your own!” and “In a sense, a geek is like an expert. That’s right, a total expert! A successful musician must necessarily be a music geek, a good movie director is a movie geek. You see? It’s those experts, those geeks who open up the world to others!”. It’s positive and nice, and it forms who he is as a person.

No one’s perfect, and neither is he, but he’s pretty damn good. And I’ll defend him with every fiber of my being for just how real he feels.

I personally believe it’s because this fandom has a definite bias against male characters that aren’t distinctly attractive, as you can see Hoshi gets ignored quite a lot compared to all of the other males (even being the ONLY male left out of the halloween drawing!! Let alone he gets left out of most fan merch.) and he’s honestly one of the most down to earth and downright cool dudes in DR. I don’t want to change either of them, because I think their looks only make it better for their backstories and who they are as characters! So even if Hifumi gets like no fanart, and Hoshi struggles with getting new content, I’d rather have them the same way they are now, rather than make them attractive. Because I think that the way they are, only makes them better.

And that’s my short version essay on why I think Hifumi’s super rad and more people should give him a chance. Of course he’s a very hit or miss kinda person with his comedy, but if Tsumugi’s obscure anime references were fun for you, then Hifumi’s really good too! ^p^b
