What’s funny is that the author actually did a few of these things to shorten the story (like cutting out 5th’s arc, 10th’s death, the death of Yukki’s parents, etc.). He’d circumvent in-depth explanations of these events by adding chapter interludes, where MurMur would briefly summarize the events to Yukki. And even with all that, we still wound up missing 13 chapters. Truth be told, I think the light novel was doomed from the moment it was limited to two parts. It’s kind of like when big studios try to fit a long and dense manga series into a cookie-cutter 12 episode anime. *cough, Big Order, cough*  

I feel like the best way to shorten a series like Future Diary, with several diverse characters and subplots, is by setting a priority of which story you wish to tell. In this case, the priority is obviously Yukiteru and Yuno’s relationship, meaning you’ll regrettably have to cut out any character arc that doesn’t greatly affect their growth, and replace it for an interlude-like summary. So goodbye to most of the side characters' stories lol. 

I think I’d only go in depth with the arcs of the 6th, 4th, 7th, 11th, and maybe some interactions with the 9th, as these moments added the most growth to Yukki and Yuno's dynamic. Plus, one of the great things about novelization is that, when told from the first person, it expands on the characters' thoughts and emotions. Since the novel is a retelling, there’s not much it could add in terms of story, but I feel like it would’ve been a great opportunity to get more insight into the way Yuno and Yukki’s feelings evolve for each other. I’d love to see, perhaps after the revelation of the time loop, Yuno reminisce on how she fell in love with first-world Yukki, showing the differences between how he and his second-world counterpart behaved. The moment I actually wanted to see the most adapted into novel form was the confrontation near the end, where Yuno tells Yukki that he would’ve fallen for anyone he could rely on. It’d be so interesting to read their thought process, to see if Yuno actually believed this or if she was just lying to herself in order to dissociate from Yukki, and see Yukki mentally going through every piece of evidence that would prove her wrong. I’m going off on my little fantasy land here, but there are so many moments between the two that, psychologically speaking, would be delightful to read through. 

Ultimately, the light novel suffered from a very limiting format and an author that couldn’t work it out. Mind you, it’s no easy feat trying to summarize such a dense story, a lot of sacrifice would have to be made, but the main flaw Itou Nobuki had was being inconsistent with the sort of content he was willing to sacrifice. He’d add a few interludes here and there to summarize character deaths, but go on to fully flesh out less important scenes such as the amusement park date or moments between Nishijima and Minene. I don’t want to make too many assumptions here, but I get the feeling that the guy wrote out the story to his heart’s content until he realized he went over the page limit, started to delete as much as he could and then went “good enough” lol. It makes me wonder now how Esuno was planning to wrap up the story in case it didn’t take off, but after going through the cuts that would have to be made… I’m glad we don’t live in that alternate universe.

Future Diary Light Novel (thoughts/ short TL)

It’s common for light novels to receive manga or anime adaptations in order to introduce the series to a wider public. What’s not so common is for the reverse to happen, though with a series as popular as Future Diary was back in the early 2010’s, it’s only natural that a light novel was among the many adaptations it received. Said adaptation was released in 2012 and written by the author Itou Nobuki (who, according to his MAL profile, hasn’t worked on any other piece). The light novel was divided into two books, and each chapter contains unique artwork done by Masahiko Yoshihara. The art is also the only different/new thing the light novel adds to this series. 

The general consensus on the light novel is that it’s a retelling of the manga, which other than giving you a little more insight on the characters’ thoughts, doesn’t add anything new. I decided to give it a read to confirm this myself, and… I have things to say (spoilers for the LN ahead… and Future Diary too, duh).

First and foremost, the notion that the light novel adds nothing new is mostly correct, save for the prologue and epilogue. The prologue introduces the reader to ““Deus,”” who is experiencing some form of memory loss and is now being guided by MurMur through the Akashic Records to remember the events of the Survival Game. The novel then goes over the events we already know from the series all the way up to 9th’s death… where it suddenly ends. Yes, the novel ends with 9th’s death and jumps straight to the epilogue, where ““Deus”” informs the reader that he cannot recall the events after that, because it physically hurts him to remember.

That’s when we get the revelation that this isn’t Deus we’re dealing with, but Yukiteru, who has taken on Deus’ role after winning the Survival Game. Apparently, he’s experiencing problems with his memory similar to Yuno’s due to the trauma of losing her, so to further help Yukiteru remember the ending of the Survival Game, MurMur gives him Yuno’s diary, from which he gathers the final details. From there on, the events carry out similar to Redial, where the last entry in Yukiteru’s diary gets rewritten to “Yuno’s coming to see me.” Yuno then magically appears and it’s happily ever after and blah blah blah…

While I found the prologue and epilogue to be insightful in terms of giving us more details about the ending, I was pretty confused that the novel left out the most crucial aspects of the story. Everything from episode 22 and on from the anime (or the last two volumes of the manga), which includes: Yukiteru killing his friends, Yukiteru finding out that the dead cannot be revived, Happy End, time loop plot twist (which is the pillar the story is built upon btw), the final battle between Yukiteru, Yuno and the 9th… and the list goes on. If someone who hasn’t read the manga or watched the anime read this as a stand-alone piece, they’d be left scratching their heads at the epilogue. 

The novel makes you raise all the questions that would lead to the eventual plot twist, simply to end with said questions unanswered. And if you think this is weird, it’s because it is. The author himself acknowledges this on the author’s notes at the end of the novel. He explains that the light novel was set out to be a two-parter from the very beginning, meaning he couldn’t extend it to fit all aspects from the manga. Which is understandable; however, he deliberately chose to end it with 9th’s death because he "wanted to leave the story at its climax for the epilogue."

Look, I understand this man was working with what he was given, but if he really wanted to blue-ball the audience, he could’ve at least tried to fit the revelation of the time loop before cutting to the epilogue. You know, so the story actually makes some sense? The epilogue casually mentions the second and third world as if it's something that's been brought up before, when this is the first and only time it's mentioned. Anyway, I’m going off on a rant here. I’m very particular about pacing and structure in writing, so seeing something like this really grinds my gears (especially since I wanted to see the events from the final episodes novelized).

With that out of the way, I did translate a little bit of the light novel since there’s no official translation out there, namely the prologue, chapter 1 and the epilogue. I’m not planning on translating the rest of the novel since it’s basically a retelling, but I did find those parts to be interesting enough to translate, given that the prologue and epilogue delve into Yukiteru’s ten thousand years of solitude. 

Now that I have my little rant/ translation projects of the week out of the way, I’ll go back my cave ~

Future Diary "The Live World"

Did you know that back on July 29th, 2012, there was a live concert for almost all Future Diary songs? Well, this little gem in Future Diary history is known as The Live World, a concert held at Shibuya AX to promote the Future Diary anime. It featured not just Yousei Teikoku and Faylan (the artists who made the OPs and EDs for the show), but also the voice actors and singers of the character theme songs.

For those unaware, each Future Diary character has at least one theme song to their name. These songs come from the “Future Diary Inspired Album,” which had two volumes. Yuno and Minene were the only characters to receive two songs each, as well as an extra song with their love interest. You can find the first and second volumes of this album on Youtube thanks to SingerOfW.

All of the character themes were performed at the live event along with the OPs and EDs, except for the 4th’s and 5th’s themes. “The Creator,” a song attached to the pilot of the show, was also not performed at the event. The reason why these three songs were discarded from the concert are unknown; however, I assume it had something to do with time constraints and lower popularity than the rest of the songs. 

The event was recorded and sold as a Blu-Ray with almost three hours of content. The Blu-Ray disks of the performance began sales on November 29th, 2013, along with the sale of the Future Diary Blu-Ray Box. The recording was divided into two disks. It also included two bonus gifts: an eight-page booklet and an additional 9-minute recording of the making of the event. This 9-minute recording has yet to surface online.

There was also a raffle for a free ticket to the event. To enter the raffle you had to get the three volumes of the limited edition Blu-Ray CDs. Volumes 1 and 2 came with application tickets, while volume 3 came with the postcard you were supposed to mail the tickets in.

One of the more important aspects of this concert is that Madness Rain and HAPPY END, the OP and ED for Redial, were first unveiled at the event. Future Diary’s “Next Project” (which we now know as Redial) had recently been announced by that time, and the release of these two songs made anticipation for this project grow bigger. This is evidenced by a blog post I found from a girl who attended the concert, who shared her own thoughts of what she speculated this “next project” to be:

It seems like the ‘next project’ isn’t a ‘Paradox’ story, but an original story; however, since I saw Akise-kun on the visuals of the OP, it can’t be about the first world, so I think it might be related to the third world… (Source.) 

Speaking of blog posts, Esuno also made an entry on his blog talking about his time at the event! The entry reads:

Today I went to ‘Future Diary’ The Live World at Shibuya AX. We were not allowed to take pictures inside so I only have a picture of the entrance (insert photo that wasn’t archived by the Wayback Machine T-T). It was a passionate and fun concert. I enjoyed the performances from a seat on the second floor. Both Kawahara-san (12th’s VA) and Shiraishi-san (Kousaka’s VA) made great MCs, the music and the visuals from the anime were wonderful; a very fulfilling three hours. Thank you to all of the performers, and especially the audience who came all the way in this heat! (Source. Side note: Esuno’s blog doesn’t exist anymore, so that’s why the link is on the Wayback Machine).

The Live World also had some of my favorite Future Diary merchandise. Here’s a list of all the merch sold at the event:

There were also two T-shirts sold, unrelated to the event, made by a company called MARS SIXTEEN. This company makes anime-related goods, like these MN inspired T-shirts. Sadly, there are no pictures of the red shirt, though it is said that it had the DEAD END graphic on the front, while the picture of the 12 diary owners was on the back. The Yuno shirt also came in gray instead of purple:

Videos of the event can be found on Youtube, namely of Yousei Teikoku’s performance of Kuusou Mesorogiwi, and also all of Faylan’s performances. However, none of the character theme songs played at the event have surfaced on Youtube. 

… That being said, the contents of both Blu-Ray disks have been uploaded to a site called BiliBili (it’s like a Chinese NicoNicoDouga). Here are the links for disk 1 and disk 2. 

Before I end this post, I have to talk about the 12th’s theme, performed by his voice actor: Kawahara Yoshihisa. When I tell you my jaw dropped to the floor… this man showed up on the stage, fully decked out in 12th’s costume. Mask, belt, tights, everything. Kousaka’s VA, Shiraishi Minoru, also showed up dressed like a middle schooler. Let me tell you, Esuno wasn’t lying when he called them great MCs, they absolutely stole the show. The backstory of why they agreed to dress up for the concert is in the second track of the Radio CDs, which I talked about on my last post, for anyone interested.

Future Diary Radio TL

Here’s the (long time coming) update on the Future Diary Radio CDs! I’m sorry it took so long to finish this project, as always, school has me on a chokehold, but I’m glad to say the translations are finally done! In case you missed the original post, the Future Diary Radio CDs are an obscure piece of media from Future Diary that include commentary from some of the show’s voice actors, regarding their experiences voicing the characters and opinions about the series. You can now find the three tracks with the translated subtitles on my Youtube channel (daisynilla) or on the links down below. Special thanks to @iwanpepsu, @syrpai and @the-chosen-blood-teller for helping me gather the tracks from the radio CDs.

And on a semi-related note, I also wanted to use this post to comment on a couple of things that came up while doing research for this project.

1. In all of the three Radio CDs, the voice actors mention something about a live concert that happened at Shibuya AX on July 29th. I'm not sure how well-known this concert and the music featured in it are among the fandom, but given how much it is talked about in the radio CDs (and how much information I gathered on it incidentally), I figure I should make a separate post dedicated to that. Especially because of… this: 

2. On one of the Radio CDs, there was a mention of the DVD cast commentaries done by the Japanese voice actors. I don't own the DVD, but I was accidentally sent the audio for these Japanese cast commentaries in response to my last post about the Radio CDs. For my sanity’s sake, I’m not translating this, (I feel like the radio CDs are a good enough stand-in for the cast commentaries) but given its mention, I wanted to provide some of the context surrounding it. Like your regular cast commentaries on any DVD’s bonus features, the voice actors share their comments of the show as they watch the episodes. The order of the voice actors featured in each episode goes as follows:

Episodes 1-2: feature commentary from Misuzu Togashi (Yukki’s VA) and Tomosa Murata (Yuno’s VA).

Episodes 3-5: Aizawa Mai (Minene’s VA, ps her voice is so high it caught me off guard), Kawahara Yoshihisa (12th’s VA) and Sendai Eri (Tsubaki’s VA).

Episodes 6-8: Sanada Asami (Reisuke’s VA) and Mizuhara Kaoru (Rea’s VA).

Episodes 9-11: Ishida Akira (Akise’s VA), Matsuoka Yuki (Hinata’s VA) and Hiramatsu Hirokazu (10th’s VA).

Episodes 12-14: Ishii Makoto (Nishijima’s VA) and Tanaka Masahiko (Kurusu’s VA).

Episodes 15-17: Seki Tomokazu (Marco’s VA) and Kuwatani Natsuko (Ai’s VA).

Episodes 18-20: Yukana (Mao’s VA) and Shiraishi Minoru (Kousaka’s VA).

Episodes 21-23: Inada Tetsu (Ryuji’s VA, aka 11th’s secretary) and Konno Hiromi (8th’s VA).

Episodes 24-26: Domon Jin (3rd’s VA) and Honda Manami (MurMur’s VA).

(Also, I'm pretty sure the English version of the DVD includes cast commentaries too, but I don't know if those are the Japanese cast commentaries with translated subtitles or if it's commentary from the American cast… probably the latter, but I guess I’ll have to look a little deeper into that.)

Thank you so much for finding this! I never thought I'd see the day where it'd be available online. It's interesting to see how much Esuno's work has evolved throughout the decades (both art and plot-wise). And as for the translation... I did a little something, hehe.

Sakae Esuno's "Railway Angel" ( 鉄道天使 )

As previously promised, I've finally scanned in all of Sakae Esuno's "Railway Angel" — his first-ever published manga. Esuno submitted this one-shot story to Kadokawa in 2001 as part of an annual contest. He was awarded the "Ace Next Rookie Mangaka Encouragement Award," and the story was subsequently published in the September 2001 issue of Monthly Ace Next (月刊少年エース).

The story herein is both written and drawn by Esuno, who would of course go on to create Mirai Nikki/"Future Diary," Big Order, and more. And as far as I'm aware, this is the first time this story has ever been made available online. (It's only the Japanese original for now; y'all will have to wait for a scanlation somewhere down the line. Apologies.)

You know, as paranoid as Takao was made out to be, the visual novel did show he was willing to amp up his kill count just to get to his final target. He went for all of Kasumi's family, and only backed out of killing the 13th because he learned the hard way that she could overpower him.

I might be overthinking here, but serial killers tend to get cocky after years of not getting caught. This might've been the case for Takao. Nothing in his diary was pointing at defeat, so why not kill two birds with one stone? (literally). Even though the visual novel didn't provide that much information about Takao's background, his actions lead me to theorize that he follows the typical serial killer MO: cocky, impulsive, seeks out vulnerable victims (in his case mostly students), and most importantly: need for control. This last bit explains his paranoia perfectly to me. He's not afraid of having to kill more people than necessary, heck morality is clearly out the window for him, he's afraid of losing control, which is the sole reason why many killers attack to begin with: they want control over anyone and anything. I don't think he's dumb, he clearly is very calculated, but he loses the moment that his impulsivity and need to have control over the situation get to him.

Maybe I watch a little too much true crime, but overanalyzing Takao's MO has always been interesting to me lol.

Okay so in the manga, when Takao's at the rooftop, seeing that Yukiteru isn't there, does he use あいつ to refer to Yukiteru?

If so, then for some reason the official manga translation, the ENG dub, along with whatever I find for ENG sub, always makes him say “Those brats”. Despite what I've read that it seems to be a singular pronoun.

He actually uses あいつら (plural version) both in the anime and manga. So, the translations would be correct, since he knows both Yuno and Yukiteru are at the rooftop

I mean, it's never explicitely said in the manga if he knew about Yuno or not, but it seems likely he did. After all, he saw them both at the elevator, and his diary would probably warn him if Yuno was screwing over his plans.

Future Diary Radio

One piece of Future Diary merch that's always kinda frustrated me are the "Future Diary Radio" CDs. Each of the three CDs came as a gift for pre-ordering the Blu-Ray limited editions of volumes 7, 8 and 9, respectively. The CDs are said to contain a radio segment of the characters featured on the covers talking about the state of the series (as of the respective volume each CD came in) their thoughts, feelings and futures, from their own POV. And that's about as much as we know from the Future Diary Radio...

Unlike the other CDs related to Future Diary, such as the Oyasumi and PSP wallpaper CDs, we don't have access to the contents of the Future Diary Radio online. No matter how much I look for it, nothing really comes up, just the images of the cover art for each CD, which honestly aren't very high quality either (not to mention they somehow managed to mess up the spelling of "diary" on the first cover lmao).

The part that truly frustrates me the most is that I'm unable to buy the CDs at the time, and the thought of them becoming lost media isn't that far-fetched given how long they've been out. I've been meaning to translate them for a while if I ever came across the audio (kinda like I did with the Oyasumi CDs), so if anyone reading this owns a copy of the CDs and is willing to share it online, I would really appreaciate it!

I know that the radio segments may not add much to the story, but my curiosity is winning me over. After all, I'd love to see what sort of conversations Yuno and Yukki have together about the show, and heck, Minene and Yomotsu? Don't even get me started on MurMur and Kousaka fighting. So yeah, I hope that one day we can see the contents of the radio come out. I would hate it if we're left with nothing but the bad quality pictures, like other merch from the past... not to mention the other random merch that we only know of because of promotional booklets, but I better end my rant here before I lose my mind over an MN mp3 player ;-;

Translation for the Side Stories!

This is an update to my pinned post about the translation of the game "Future Diary: the 13th Diary Owner." I’m happy to say that I’ve finished the translations for the side stories, meaning that the game has been translated in its entirety! You can find the document with the side stories in the main folder > menus & bonus material translated. I just wanted to thank everyone who’s kept up with this project since it was announced, despite its ups and downs and the time it took, it's nice to finally see it completed. I still have other translation projects thought out for Future Diary, so hopefully this isn’t my last project on this series 👀

You forgot to mention that some of the dialogue here is only avaible when Yuno is max yandere metre. The part where I've underlined is where the dialogue that is exclusive to Yuno's metre being full ends.

Just wanna say you've missed a scene in your Memory 4 PDF!

So, if in the second character choice menu, you pick Reisuke, chose the smoke bomb, then in the third character choice menu and chose Yuno, you enter a Dead End where all the cult members come back to the roof top to kill you.

However, you did not translate the part where if you have max Yandere Meter Yuno, she kills all the cult members.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I remember translating that part and writing it on the document, so I'm not sure how it ended up missing. I'll have to check if it's on another version of the document or if I accidentally deleted it somehow. Hopefully I won't have to redo it.

Translation for "Future Diary: the 13th Diary Owner"

"Future Diary: the 13th Diary Owner" is a visual novel based on the manga and anime of Future Diary, with two official versions: the original release and a re-release dubbed Re:Write.

The game was never officially translated to English; however, some of us within the community have been working on the fan-translation, and I've decided to post my own work here. The following is a link to a Google Drive folder with all of the translations I've personally worked on so far, in the form of pdf scripts. I want to clarify that this are my personal translations, which I've been working on since 2019. Nothing on the folder is related to the group-work on the game's translation, official game files and coding, since it only includes files that I've created. For that reason, the translations for each game chapter appear as pdf scripts, instead of it being a ROM translation.
