i got a response from Indigo, and they will manually add Suddence to their catalogue at some point in the next two weeks. as such, any Canadian orders from Indigo will have extra time to claim the freebies (extra time depending on when the book is added).

sorry that the response to this is to wait 😓 the only other alternative i can think of is to contact your local indie bookstore(s) and see if they can order it for you. i've gotten a few hard-to-find books this way!

Suddence is also reportedly up on a number of online library services, such as Bibliotheca, OverDrive, and Baker & Taylor! Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with online library services. I've checked OverDrive and was told the book was not available despite it technically existing on there.

Dear Dany,

I tried one of the machines at the arcade. I swear they rig these things. They got these huge claw machines set up, and I’ve been watching the kids play. That claw is definitely loose. These kids are getting swindled.

I met up with Aaron and JJ the other day. Hard to believe it’s been two months since everything happened. It feels like it’s been a hundred years, but it also feels like it was just last week. I forgot to mention: Aaron and I had to tell him the made-up version of the truth. I felt so bad about it because we messed up his car and ruined his plans. I felt like we owed him the truth. But I also know the danger of letting the real story slip. Plus, I signed a contract. So that’s that.

Anyway, he forgives us for wrecking his car, and that was before we told him we could pay for it. He’s just relieved we’re okay. Even though we thought we ruined his plans, apparently he still managed to go on that date by convincing his date to come pick him up. Two-hour drive! I think we call that dedication.

That’s what’s going on with us so far. I’m still at my pizza job. Aaron’s doing full-time now. I wish there was a way for me to know what’s going on with you. I noticed you had a TV in your room. I hope they play some good movies on there.

Hello! Hope you’re doing well. Life has been a lot lately. I got a job. Remember when I told you I used to work in a pizza place? Yeah. Back there again. They changed names, but it’s in the same place, so I can still see that arcade I told you about. I still think about it, by the way, you using your ~sparks~ to cheat the games. If you ever end up trying it and it works, please let me know.

So I’ll be busy working for…I don’t know. The foreseeable future. Aaron got a job too, so at least neither of us will be moping around too much. He’s doing part time at the car shop or something. Jealous. I’m working full-time. At least I get to take the leftover pizzas home.

Dear Dany,

Hi. It’s been a while. Sorry. I was busy moving back in with my family. It’s just for now, until I can get my footing again. I’m not sure if I’m going to go back to med school or not. You and I really went on a hell of a road trip, huh?

I can’t really talk to my family about what happened, though, so I have to try really, really hard to pretend I’m not messed up. At least Lilian got us a therapist to talk to. Oh, by “us” I mean me and Aaron. If you’re worried we might be back together, don’t be. We’re not dating again, and probably never will. But we’re friends. Well, “friends.” We’re on friendly terms. But it’s good to be able to talk about what happened to someone, even if he wasn’t there for all of it.

I didn't mean to make this letter a bummer. Here's a picture of Poquito.

Aaron named him. It means “a little bit” in Spanish because Poquito really was so tiny when we got him. He’s a Pomeranian! At least, we’re pretty sure he is.

It’s strange talking to you like this. Since you’re reading this, you must be all better.

Just so you know, I stayed as long as I could. I felt like I had to be there when you woke up so you wouldn’t be scared and confused. But Lilian told me to go home. There was nothing I could do here. But mostly, I think she was worried about Them regrouping and coming after you again. She didn’t want me caught up in the mess. It’s funny. This whole time I thought I was already caught up in the mess.

She said I could send letters, though, so here we are. Hi. How are you. I hope the hospital food isn’t as shitty as they say.

What’s up with me? Well. They paid me a lot of money to keep quiet. Like, a lot of money. I would have kept my mouth shut even without the cash. Shh, don’t tell them that. The money paid for JJ’s busted car. It also paid for mine. Thank god I got to her before the shop smashed her for parts. She has a name, by the way. I don’t think I ever told you that. It’s Shirley.

Doctor Heed puts his hands up. Not a surrender, but to prove he means no harm. I haven’t seen him in two years. That was back when I thought he was nice. He still looks nice, wearing a brown coat over a blue plaid shirt and khaki pants like he’s just somebody’s very kind, very normal uncle.

But I know it’s all a front, and I won’t fall for it again.

“We need to find somewhere to rest,” I say. “Like, really rest.”

Marisa shakes her head, pressing her palms into her eyes. “We have to keep moving.”

“We can’t keep moving if you look like you’re going to pass out.”

“I just need to sit awhile.”

“You need medicine.”

“We can’t get medicine,” she bursts out, slicing with both hands. “We can’t go to a hospital. We can’t go to a shelter. We have to keep going before I get worse and we are wasting time. Get in the car.”

I want to cry. But I say, “You didn’t pump the gas yet.”

She says a bad word under her breath and starts to get out of the car. I watch her wobble, and my heart cramps with frustration.

“I’ll do it,” I say.

She looks like she wants to argue, but then there’s some relief on her face, too. Like she’s glad she doesn’t have to get up.

The rest of the car ride is just the smooth ba-bumps of the road and the radio blasting local commercials. It all makes me want to fall asleep. I don’t want to though, so I wrestle my eyes open and count all the green cars we see instead.

My fingers wander to the bump in my hoodie, where the key hangs around my neck. I try to feel the patterns of the rubber cover, the colourful design and the bright, bubbly number. It had felt so heavy yesterday when I thought I wouldn’t reach Suddence in time.

I clutch it tight through my clothes, relief working slowly through my body.

I haven’t failed. I’m on my way.
