“That’s here.
That’s home.
That’s us.
On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.
The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
— Carl Sagan

I was captivated by the book for its gorgeous collage illustration by Billy Renkl and was enamoured with Margaret Renkl’s writing. Billy Renkl’s artwork highlights the objective of each chapter and adds a charming and intricating touch, making The Comfort of Crows feel like a cherished prayer book. Through observations of nature in its repetition, Margaret Renkl wrote a poetic book paying tribute to the beauty of nature. Despite living in a time when the human world is encroaching on nature and the effect of climate change is becoming more apparent, The Comfort of Crows serves as a soothing reminder to slow down, appreciate our surroundings and let nature unfold in front of our eyes. Rather than introducing a new idea, this book stresses the importance of paying attention to the changing landscape and therefore provides a comforting read for times when life seems to be rushing by too fast.
